Scholars-in-Residence Program (SiR) & Visiting Professors The Scholar‐in‐Residence program supports scholars and experts in conducting collaborative research with an emphasis on advancing sustainability in one of TISED’s strategic areas; Sustainable Infrastructure and Urban Development; Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency; Sustainable Industrial Processes and Manufacturing or Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience. A TISED SiR spends up to six months in residence at McGill’s Faculty of Engineering to participate in interdisciplinary research with a clear policy impact and teaching. SiR Impact
SiR collaborations resulted in a high impact journal publication. The paper, titled “Technology readiness and overcoming barriers to sustainably implement nanotechnology-enabled plant agriculture”, with Dr. Hofmann as first author, was accepted for publication in the Journal Nature Food in early 2020.




Research Workshop Program


The Research Workshop Program (RWP) facilitates discussions on cutting-edge advances in technology and design as well as policy frameworks and interventions required to advance sustainability. Each RWP includes a specialized research workshop and a public seminar. During the research workshop, focussed discussions support the development of a timely and topical publication and/or a research funding proposal. The public seminar features external and McGill speakers with distinguished research track-records. Three RWPs were organized in the second and third quarter of 2019. “Sustainable Development of Emerging Nanomaterials for Energy Applications” June 2019. Organized by Dr. Joel Pedersen, TISED SiR. Workshop participants: 25 Public seminar attendance +75 participants. Organized in partnership with McGill Sustainability Systems Initiatives (MSSI) “Nanotechnology in Sustainable Plant Agriculture”, July 2019. Organized by Dr. Thilo Hofmann, TISED SiR. Workshop participants: 22 Public seminar attendance: +75 participants. “Fugitive Methane Emissions from the Oil and Gas Sector” September 2019. Co-Organized by Dr. Mary Kang (Civil Engineering) and Dr. Peter Douglas (Earth and Planetary Sciences) a Fellow at the Trottier Institute for Science and Public Policy.
