JANE AUSTEN AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen, Winchester Cathedral is hosting events and activities celebrating the life of one of the world’s most famous authors, who was buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral on 24 July 1817. Visitors are welcome to come and learn more about this much-loved author, whose work has inspired people, generation after generation. The Jane Austen Story is a permanent exhibition, telling the story of Jane’s life in Hampshire and the final few weeks in Winchester before her death. This summer only (to the end of September), an additional exhibition will be added displaying beautiful artefacts from Jane’s life. There will be various performances along the way with a Jane Austen theme. Pride and Prejudice needs no introduction, and will be performed in the Cathedral Close by acclaimed outside theatre company, Illyria. Performances are on 28, 29 and

Editor’s Letter
FESTIVAL FUN I wrote last time about having welcomed a camper van into the family. At that point I hadn’t done much more than a trip to the seaside, but since then I’ve managed one festival. Three of us went to a fantastic festival in Dorset (which raised £76,000 for a children’s cancer charity). Now, this was the end of April which – up to that point – had been very dry, but just not that warm. Unfortunately we weren’t blessed with a dry weekend, and the weather turned colder than ever. I do have heating in the camper, but as I didn’t get back till gone midnight there didn’t seem much point putting it on, especially as I prefer to sleep in a cool room. However I didn’t notice that I hadn’t shut the door properly so
by the next morning I’d curled into a pretzel in an effort to stay warm. And planning is definitely needed, as that first night I found I had so much ‘stuff’ spread around it looked like I’d been burgled. Apart from that, it was great fun. It’s like being a child with a den. Little pots and pans, kettle on a hob, and waking up to a view of fields. On the subject of festivals, we are running a four-page guide to the summer festivals this month. Not all of them are overnight and even if that’s an option, you can choose to come home from most if you want. If you have children though, do stay over - they’ll love it! Our front cover this month is from Camp Bestival which is the most child-friendly Tania Houston event I’ve been to (see Editor page 27). 023 8027 6361

Home Interiors
The art of display If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1. Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home.
2. Good lighting makes all the difference. Carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are ideal, but an adjustable lamp may provide a more informal, cheaper fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture. 3. Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together. 4. Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most visually powerful, of all. There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and 10

doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically.
5. When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group.
6. Every time you display more than one object, you need to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical, considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms. Asymmetry, however, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive. 7. A great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object - but ensure there is plenty of space around it in which it can ‘breathe’. 8. Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you

10. Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. This is your home, not a gallery, and the important thing is that you love what’s around you.

9. If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it.

display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf.

ROMSEY FAIRS AND FESTIVALS Summer’s here and the sun is shining (we hope). Time to make the most of being outdoors and what better way to do this than enjoying the quintessentially British pastime of attending a village summer fete, carnival or festival. Great live music, fun events both to watch and to take part in, and good food and drink. And in the month of July, Romsey is spoilt for choice.
Romsey Festival
1-16 July www.romseyfestival.org This festival is a celebration of the arts brought to you by members of your local community. You can expect
• Music ranging from grand choral concerts to solo performers, from orchestras and organists to folk and jazz. • Painting, photography, textiles and other art. • Gardens, buildings, and the environment. • Workshops, talks, demonstrations, and interactive events. • History, local culture, religious celebrations and food and drink.
Of special note are events such as the annual Schools’ Choir Festival in aid of Jane Scarth House, and concerts from the Romsey Choral Society, the Romsey Singers, Romsey Abbey Choirs and Romsey Male Voice Choir. Folk and popular music performers include Folklights at the Lantern Theatre, Cuckoo Pint at King John’s House, and Home Folk in the Old House At Home. RAODS will be performing their production of “Cider With Rosie” at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Island House, whilst regular performers Chest House Productions stage the story of Florence Nightingale at Romsey Library. Festival Chairman Dick Hewett hopes that the range of events will attract as wide an audience as possible, showcasing the talent and culture of Romsey and the surrounding area to best advantage, as well as raising funds for many good causes. 16
Beggars Fair 8 July www.beggarsfair.org.uk The Beggars Fair is an annual event run entirely by a small team of volunteers. The day has a great atmosphere that keeps bringing people, and performers, back year after year.
Throughout the streets and in venues all around the town, the best of local musicians bring you an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, blues, soul, rock, bluegrass, classical and world music. Together with colourful dance displays and children’s entertainment there is plenty on offer. The fun starts 11am and there are over 80 acts to see and hear across 20 venues and all for free.
romsey Summer Carnival Week 16-23 July www.romseycarnival.co.uk Providing entertainment, activities and interest to the local people of Romsey, and at the same time raising funds for local clubs, groups and charities. People of all ages dress up and take part in go kart, bed and wheelbarrow races and have a fantastic time as the whole town celebrates. There will also be a large procession through the town. Summer Carnival Procession is sponsored by Wheelers Travel.

Life Begins
why it’s smart to face up to change By Alison Runham “Turn and face the strange” sang the late, great David Bowie, warning: “Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older”. Whether you like or not, it’s important to understand that the older “you” is likely to have a very different body shape, skin tone and hair colour than the twentysomething version you remember so well. People with fair skins will find their complexions become more sallow with age, while darker skins may suffer from uneven pigmentation. Hair loses its gloss, turning grey or white, and attempts to dye it back to a youthful shade are often unsuccessful because that colour is no longer compatible with a mature skin tone. Unless you are exceptionally motivated when it comes to diet and exercise, it’s also likely that you will gain weight as you age. At the same time you will experience some height loss: people typically lose almost half an inch (about one centimetre) every ten years after age 40.
Styling for men: how to be a grey fox GQ Magazine advises its mature readers: “Your wardrobe should err far more on the side of style than fashion”, adding that the key to dressing well in your 50s, 60s and 70s is to make sure that clothes fit properly.
Go through your wardrobe and throw away anything that squeezes in the wrong places. Swap trainers for smarter shoes and, where possible, buy longer-lasting, quality clothes instead of cheaper items.
Well-cut jackets worn with crisp, well-ironed shirts will keep you looking good whatever your age. Baggy trousers should be avoided, but if you’ve gained some weight since your younger days, it’s safer to buy straight-cut trousers than squeeze into 20
today’s more tapered styles.
There is plenty of style advice for older men available online. A good place to start is the Grey Fox Blog (www.greyfoxblog.com) or alternatively you can find some inspirational styling ideas on Pinterest (pinterest.com). Styling for women: why it’s wise to accessorise
Despite the fact that we are all living longer, clothes designers still seem to be obsessed with youth fashion. It can be frustrating to try on dresses, shirts and trousers designed for younger bodies, so if the tailoring doesn’t work with your contours, try experimenting with more flowing styles that don’t cling to your body shape.
If you are sensitive about a thickening waistline, less-than-firm upper arms or a wrinkled neckline, simply conceal them with light, flowing clothing or a scarf. Choosing bold accessories as a focus for your outfit is a good way of diverting attention from features you’re less keen to show off. As hair tends to become drier and more brittle with age, consider experimenting with short hairstyles, layered or feathered to frame your face.
Fortunately there are plenty of websites offering great fashion advice for mature women. Try Helen Walmsley-Johnson’s column The Invisible Woman at theguardian.com or visit Alyson Walsh’s blog site That’s Not My Age (thatsnotmyage.com).
Knowledge is power. The key to styling in your later years is to understand the aging process and the way it affects your face and body. Age is something to be celebrated, not denied or ignored, and there’s much to be gained when - rather than ignoring or resisting the physical changes caused by aging - you finally decide to embrace them. Once you’ve developed your own, personal style, the chances are you’ll look as young as you feel.

Does anxiety and worry stop you doing what you want to do? Does lack of confidence, a phobia or something else take over when you least need it? Helping you shine
Hypnotherapy can help you in so many ways
I’m Sue Jeffery, a Cognive Hypnotherapist. I work from home near Romsey and would love to talk to you about how hypnotherapy can help you to live the life you want to live. Take a look at my website www.crescenthypnotherapy.co.uk or contact me on 07890 141 889 or 023 8073 2973
When anxiety strikes What if…….. I change my job? What if…….. I walk through the park? Will dreadful things happen? Anxiety has also been called the ‘what if ’ disease. We’ll all sometimes think ‘what if ’ but some of us will ignore that negative thought. And sometimes it’s sensible to listen to it, because ultimately our mind is aiming to keep us safe. Anxiety becomes a problem when we pay too much attention to that voice. It can stop us doing things that we really want to do – the more we listen to those ‘what ifs’ the less we do, the less we experience in life. Sue Jefferey at Crescent Hypnotherapy has had clients who are consumed by ‘what ifs’ – and with gentle work together, they have been able to reduce the impact of those negative thoughts. If you’re struggling with ‘what ifs’ Sue would be happy to talk to you about making changes.

UK’s Largest History Festival
26 June to 2 July
The Chalke Valley History Festival has been held annually since 2011 and boasts of being the largest history festival in the UK. It began 2011 on a small scale and has now grown to be a week of talks, discussions, debates, as well as extensive and immersive living history and an historic air display. This year it moves to a new site in Broad Chalke (SP5 5DP). “The aim is to excite, enthral and entertain. An understanding of the past is essential,” says Co-Founder James Heneage. “Without that, it is impossible to make sense of the present or prepare for the future.” All proceeds from the festival have, since 2012, been directed to the Chalke Valley History Trust, which promotes the understanding of history to all ages, but especially children. Since 2013, the festival has also incorporated the History Festival for Schools. cvhf.org.uk. 26
The UK Festival scene
(For everyone who thinks they are a bit old for that sort of thing…)
By Tania Houston The music scene is a vibrant and important part of UK culture, and the summer festival season is the exciting showcase for the best of our new and established artists. If you’ve never been to a festival however, you might think that what you’ve seen of Glastonbury epitomises the reason you don’t go: lots of mud and a huge drunk crowd of mostly twenty-somethings.
Let me enlighten you! I am – shall we say - a ‘more mature’ music fan and I promise you that there is something on offer for almost every age, music taste and budget. There are festivals for party animals and for families; for teens and baby boomers; for day trippers and weekenders; in other words, for anyone that likes the idea of having fun with a bit of music involved.
These pages give you some help with where to start and a more information about some of the ones I know a bit about.
Bestival, Stevie Gedge
How do I choose?
There are several things to consider when planning your summer festival diary. Most of the events could be said to be suitable for anyone. Very few don’t accept children. But try to find out who the organisers are really targeting and match yourself with those. 1 You have a tight budget. Aim for the one-day only gigs, and make the most of anything free or very low cost and local. Look at: Beggars Fair, Mela Festival 2 You have young children. Does the website say children are ‘accepted’ or ‘welcomed’ – there’s a world of difference. Look at: Camp Bestival, Victorious
3 You have tweenagers/ teenagers. They need keeping an eye on, but they want to spend the time with their friends, not you. Day events are ideal for this as it gives them a bit of freedom, but stops it getting out of hand. Look at: Curious Arts, Victorious. 4 You are over 40, child-free and want Radio 2/Breeze FM type music. The retro festivals are best for you. Look at: Wickham Festival and Let’s Rock
5 You are an adult with no ties and really into music and/ or fun and dancing. Aim for something meant for grownups and chart watchers. Look at: Common People, Reading Festival. 6 You are an adult with no ties and want a full entertainment program e.g. talks and activity. Plenty on offer and we’d recommend Blissfields (local), Cornbury and Secret Garden Party.

A weekend AwAy On your doorstep is great, but it doesn’t feel like a holiday if you can nip back home at a moment’s notice. What’s needed is bit of distance (but not too much) and definitely a complete change of scene. From June to August, these ones will cram as much into three days as a fortnight in Magaluf. Secret Garden Party 20-23 July, Huntingdon, cambridgeshire
caMP BeStIVaL 27-30 July Lulworth, dorset
Whilst this is very much a music festival, it is equally a huge weekend outdoor party. Some really exciting Credit: Max Miechowski musicians, side shows, talks, fancy dress, fireworks and more, you will have just the best time ever. It has been announced this will be the last time it runs having been around for 13 years so I guess all good things…, but ‘SGP’ fans are determined to make a truly memorable send-off. This is a great example of a ‘don’t think you are too old’ type of event. Yes, there will be more under 40s than over, but the relaxed environment means that anyone, young/old, slim/fat, straight/gay, normal or a bit quirky is equally welcome.
Kids are king at Camp Bestival and a large portion of the site is devoted to children, with stacks of activities, including “The Den” for 13-17 year olds. Be assured though that the music isn’t lacking (plenty for those even without children!) with headliners Holly Johnson (Frankie goes to Hollywood) and Madness, through to Louisa Johnson (X-factor winner) and chart-topping Anne-Marie. Then there’s theatre, comedy and a fireworks show and well serviced/well behaved camping areas. All that and in the grounds of the beautiful Lulworth Castle.

WILderneSS FeStIVaL 3-6 august, cornbury Park, Oxfordshire Into August and school holidays, so a festival that truly offers something for everyone. Not every family is universally into the same music, or indeed into music at all. Wilderness offers a grand buffet of activities, where even the hardest to please will admit they had fun. Music – Grace Jones and Two Door Cinema Club for starters. Talks, poetry, debate, theatre, games, workshops, outdoor activity, wellbeing and dining experiences. Topped off with plenty of entertainment for children (because if they aren’t enjoying it, neither are you). www.wildernessfestival.com

on The doorstep So maybe you like the idea, but just don’t want to commit yourself to spending a lot of time at one or blowing the budget just trying the idea out. FeStIVaLL 29 July, Southampton New on the scene this year is Festivall which is looking like a fantastic day out at Let’S rOck very reasonable prices. Held 8 July, Southampton in Mayflower Park, it will be A retro festival, so if you are of the headlined by Alesha Dixon and right age, you will have grown up also features Conor Maynard, with these acts. There’s just one X-factor finalists Union-J and Radio stage at the front, but the day is as 1’s Scott Mills with a DJ set. But much about the socialising as it is there’s plenty more with other about the music. Picnic blankets, stages, a Comedy Tent, and a chairs and singing along all equally dance tent. For the littl’uns, Tiny prominent! Headliners include Fest is their own area within the main event. www.festiv-all.co.uk. Tony Hadley (ex Spandau Ballet).
VIctOrIOuS 25-27 aug, Southsea Victorious is unique in its truly universal appeal. It has a dedicated entertainment area for children, Rita Ora and Olly Murs for the teens and Madness and Stereophonics for the ‘nonteens’. Being a flat site it’s good for parents with buggies and elderly or disabled. And with bargain price day tickets (adults £30, age 5-15 £8) and a good train service to Southsea, well what’s not to like? victoriousfestival.co.uk
Two big ones There are two big all weekenders in this area which need a budget and some stamina to attend. BLISSFIeLdS 6-8 July, Winchester Several of the Discover team went to this one last year and loved it. Blissfields has become a little gem on the festival circuit and whilst it’s never going to be a Reading, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight sized event, it has pulled loads of established names in the past such as Bastille and Mumford and Sons. An illicit journey to the Hidden Hedge at night is a must to sample the bohemian delights of fire dancers, acrobats and trapeze artists. A wonderful festival experience on a smaller scale. blissfields.co.uk
WIckHaM FeStIVaL 3-6 august, Wickham KT Tunstall (who is a great performer), 10cc, The Levellers and Seth Lakeman are headlining this year. There are no current chart-toppers, but then it’s not that sort of festival. The audience tends to be families (and plenty of children’s entertainment offered) and a slightly older audience. But it means there’s a relaxed atmosphere and good camping/campervan facilities giving a lovely combination of excellent music in a social environment. www.wickhamfestival.co.uk

Gardening
outdoor relaxation When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?
Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening.
A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move
about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke.
Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with freedraining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage.
When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful.
And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink - and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden.

THE BEAUTY OF A FRAME Place a picture on the wall and its look will take you to a good place or memory, whilst instantly lifting your spirit and soul making you content. Your picture is a sentimental companion, one that you can take anywhere, whether it is a children’s photo or artwork, a fantastic painting, a football shirt or even your lucky pair of shoes. An empty wall is like a blank canvas, no connection or identity, no focal points and no character. But in order for your picture to look its best, the frame should be carefully considered. A frame is a protective, decorative case for your treasured item to be displayed either on a wall or a table. The deco and style of your house may change in time but a picture frame will stand any fashion tendency still suiting the artwork perfectly. Before choosing the best framing option, there are two initial points to consider. Firstly, the frame has to be safe and stand the test of time; if it doesn’t, it will let your artwork - and yourself- down. Secondly, it has to be aesthetically pleasant to the eye of the beholder enhancing the general look of the piece of art. The most crucial aspect of the framing process is the application of the correct techniques. For those who are not familiar with Guild Commended Framer (GCF) standards, it is an accreditation that some professionals achieve after successfully passing a specific exam held by the Fine Art Trade Guild. This certificate assures high professional standards and expertise knowledge in framing at all stages with conservation techniques and museum grade. A qualified Guild Commended Framer is synonym of best practice and quality as they understand how to treat artworks of any age, condition and material helping you to achieve the best combination of rim, mount and glass to suit your pieces of art. At the 1st Floor Gallery Picture Framing they are artists themselves who will take part in the Hampshire Open Studios 2017 welcoming everyone to their exhibition this summer. Being so deeply connected to the art world, they truly understand every single aspect of the overall process from the first sketch to the frame.

RIVERWALK RESTORATION Thanks to local young people, Romsey Riverwalk Restoration is continuing to make good progress with riverbank revetment along The Causeway. Sixteen students from Sparsholt College and eight Young Farmers, together with local residents, shifted 22 tons of stones and gravel into the special bags which was then laid in the river. It was hard, exhausting work but done with enthusiasm and goodwill. Both groups said they would be willing to return which makes the project’s aim of completing the revetment by the end of this year possible.
Anyone interested in helping with the project in any way, through bag-filling/laying, fundraising or simply making a donation, please email the project organiser, Amanda Deeming on amanda.deeming@ hotmail.co.uk (putting Romsey Riverwalk Restoration in the subject title).
