January… it’s not all bad.

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

January. Almost universally, the least popular month of the year (except my daughter who was born in January and thinks it’s the very best month of the year!). Cold, dark, frugal, hungry, boring, long-time-till-the-nextbreak – all resonate with some aspect of people’s lives perfectly. In fact “Bah humbug!” is far better suited to now than the month before. OK, that’s enough whingeing, let’s think positive and remember the good stuff. 1. When you switch on the radio, you won’t hear Noddy Holder yelling ‘It’s Chriiiiist-mas’. And it’s at least another 10 months before it assaults your ears again. 2. As much fun as the overeating, underexercising, Christmas decorations, family time was, feeling back in control, back in a routine, and having a tidy house again has a pleasure all of its own. 3. Nobody is saying ‘where has the year gone’. 4. Because it’s cold, we are able to keep our bodies under wraps. Most British bodies definitely look better in their clothes than out. 5. It’s still far too early in the year for the grass to be cut. One less job to do/be nagged about. 6. The shortest day is behind us and every day is just a big longer. 7. It’s the peak month for booking holidays, an exciting thing to look forward to. 8. “This’ll be the year…”. Probably more than any other, January is month when we have great plans to effect improvement in our lives. It might be on the wane by February, but let’s enjoy the optimism while it lasts.

TECHNOLOGY

New Year Revolution Organise your life the electronic way and stick to those resolutions Withings Smart Scales & Garmin Forerunner Smartwatch

In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fully-featured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, Sat-Nav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, 6

though. If your resolution was to lose weight, a set of smart scales - from around £29 for standalone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason standalone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can

use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out nutritional information from them automatically. More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join likeminded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost.

The Life List Sign of the Times These days we are deluged with information and constantly talked down to. Now we apparently need warnings on takeaway coffee cups that CONTENTS MAY BE HOT. Well, duh! What I like to do is take a phrase out of context and imagine where it might be better applied. I see KEEP OFF THE GRASS or REDUCE SPEED NOW and I can’t help thinking they’d both be ideal for a Drug Rehabilitation Clinic. HAND WASH ONLY would look perfect above a sink and USE NO HOOKS is surely the best way to write a terrible thriller.

TEMPORARY LIGHTS could be an advertisement for Christmas decorations, while QUEUES LIKELY could refer to Christmas shopping, the January sales, or any time you’re desperate to use a public convenience. CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG might describe a successful day at the greyhound track. HIDDEN DIP could indicate someone has moved the guacamole, or that there’s an unexpected dance move coming.

DEADLINE?

WORKS EXIT could be a term for a redundancy programme, retirement, or even a staff walkout (if anyone can remember those!). WEAK BRIDGE means it’s time to learn a new card game, or to give up on that yoga class. HARD HAT AREA is a fancy term for a head and MEETING POINT is perfect for a Friday night in a pub. I would love to see THIS DOOR IS ALARMED next to TRAFFIC CALMING. The one that really gets under my skin is GATES IN CONSTANT USE because they never are, and believe me I wait around to check. GARDENING

Growing Fruit Trees by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Who doesn’t enjoy sinking their teeth into a delicious, flavour-packed, superbly juicy apple or pear? Mmm! But if you want the ultimate in gorgeous apples, pears, plums or more, then the fruit needs to be freshly picked and sun-warmed - so grow your own and you can also save yourself a few bob, have fun and make some good looking additions to your garden, even when space is limited. There’s no need to have a massive plot or an orchard to grow fruit trees…

Pear Tree Trained Over Arch

You can grow fruit trees in surprisingly small spaces, especially if you don’t grow them in a classic tree shape, but train them. Training them into espaliers (so that they have several sets of horizontal ‘arms’), cordons (as single main stems grown at an angle) or fans (with branches trained into a fan shape) means that you can grow many varieties of apples and pears up against a suitable vertical surface such as a wall, fence or set of sturdy wires. You could also train fruits like apples as ‘step-overs’ - this just means trained so they make a neat edging for a bed or border, about 45cm or so above ground level. A step-over apple basically goes up to a height of about 30cm and is then trained so that it forms two horizontal ‘arms’. They look great when in flower and will even bear a smallish crop of fruit along the arms. Try stepovers around the edge of your vegetable plot or flower bed. Alternatively, why not make a real feature of fruit and use a tree to create a decorative and, later on, a productive arch? Buy an inexpensive bare-root cordon (straight stem) or a ‘whip’ fruit

14

tree of your favourite variety, pair it with another variety that is a suitable pollinator (check with the nursery) and plant one on each side of the arch, training them in as they grow. It will look great, phenomenally pretty when covered in blossom in spring, and after a few years will bear tasty fruit too. But what if you don’t have any open ground, beds or borders in your backyard style garden? Provided you get the right rootstock (see below) it is quite possible to grow fruit trees in large containers. The container needs to be as big as possible - a half-barrel at least - and must have drainage holes kept clear using a few inches of broken china or ‘crocks’ at its bottom. Good quality loam-based compost such as John Innes No.3 will work well, but help to keep it well aerated and free-draining by adding 25-50% multi-purpose loam-free compost. Whatever the size of your garden, but especially if space is short, when you are choosing fruit trees it is essential to get them on the right ‘rootstock’, as this determines the ultimate size and vigour of the tree. The rootstock

is the type of roots onto which the chosen variety of apple has been grafted. Apples are particularly complicated and a good nursery will advise you, but as a rule, for step-overs, cordons, dwarf bushes and trees in containers try the extremely dwarfing but somewhat tricky M27 - but do beware weak varieties or any tree grown on this rootstock in poor soil or not well pampered may well fail. For bush, cordon, espaliers and halfstandard try the easier to look after dwarfing rootstock M26, while for a cordon, an espalier on poor soil, arches and bush trees

try the semi-dwarfing MM106. You can either buy one year old ‘maidens’ or ‘whips’ which are small, fairly straight stems and train them yourself, or if you want to save time you can often buy trained or part-trained fruit trees. Obviously you’ll pay more for a trained tree, but it can save you several years work! Make sure you choose the varieties you grow so that they are in flower at the same time and thus can pollinate each other - if there is no suitable pollinator in the vicinity you will not get

fruit. Check with your supplier who will be able to tell you which ‘pollination group’ each variety is in. At this time of year you can buy fruit trees which are really good value because they are sold ‘bare root’, this just means lifted from a field and not container grown. These are not only inexpensive, but also establish particularly well. Bare root fruit trees are generally available from about November until early March, depending on the weather - so don’t delay, get ordering or planting today!

Perfect as a gift (or as a treat for you!) make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of at-yourelbow advice and tips, ensuring great results. There’s a stylish gift card available too for this perfect present! It is great value and various pack sizes are available (e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29), plus that weekly advice.

INTERVIEW

Rod Stewart At the age of 70, Rod Stewart is showing no signs of slowing down. After a critically acclaimed 2013 album, he has returned with a new CD for 2015 ‘Another Country’. He caught up with Lucy Ambache from the Evening Breeze, and talked superheroes, haircuts and yoga.

Rod - you’ve still got it. What is it that I’ve got? I don’t know! You’ve had it for a long time. Well I’m not going to give it back, that’s for sure! What is it though? I don’t know, You tell me! You haven’t changed really. Is that what it is? I dunno. Maybe. The album’s really awesome. Oh thank you. I did get a lot of inspiration from the previous album, ‘Time’. The fans had put together a book of all the emails and texts sent to the fan club and I thought “they really did like this one” so it gave me the inspiration to make another one. It’s really dedicated to the fans. You’ve got a bit of reggae on there, along with some ska. Yeah and one of my favourite tracks is dedicated to my four year old son called ‘Batman, Superman, Spiderman’.

business and I love getting up in front of 5, 10, 50 thousand people and seeing a lot of smiling faces singing back! It’s a truly privileged position to be in. I’m just getting into yoga and I read that you did the same… and fell into a fireplace? Yes I did. Thank goodness the fire wasn’t on! I tried to do that one where you stand on one leg and you put one leg behind you and the other arm’s out front. I lost my balance – and that was my last effort at yoga! My friend Anne got into real trouble at school as she cut off her hair, trying to copy your look. Ah bless! Did she say “I’m trying to look like Rod Stewart”? Yes. Which I think got her into more trouble, actually! Well in those days she would have got in more trouble. My image wasn’t quite as pure as it is now. <laughs> Well you said it, not me!

I should know this, but how many albums is this now? I think it’s 29 and I’ve sold over 200 million! Wow. So you’ve got to do 30 now! Oh ok. We’ll see. But you wouldn’t do it if you didn’t love it? No you’re absolutely right. I love absolutely every aspect of the 22

What are the Signs of Dental Problems in Your Rabbit? It’s not necessarily tooth decay that causes dental problems in a rabbit. Teeth that grow at a rate of 2mm per week, combined with the wrong type of diet, are more likely to be at fault. Rabbits’ teeth should be ground down by their food, and if this doesn’t happen they can develop overgrown molars or spurs of enamel that cut into the soft tissue in their mouth. Foods rich in fibre that also wear down the teeth, such as hay and dark green leafy vegetables, will stop incisors becoming too long. 26

To help you spot the telltale signs of trouble, and deal effectively with your rabbit’s dental health, here are some of the signs to look out for. Lack of grooming Rabbits naturally groom themselves, and if yours has stopped grooming it can lead to a range of other problems including fly strike, a potentially fatal disease. Rabbits use their teeth during the grooming process, so

lack of cleanliness on their part could mean that their teeth are sore. Loss of weight It may be painful for them to eat, resulting in a rapid loss of weight. The abrasive nature of hay in particular could be causing them pain. Drooling If your rabbit has started to drool, it might be due to dental problems. Also look out for wetness on their front paws. Your vet should be able to smooth any enamel spurs, and keeping an eye on your rabbit’s general behaviour can also help to pinpoint problems. http://www.rabbitawarenessweek. co.uk/health/dental/ By Ann Haldon

Canine Partners trains pups like Tia to transform the lives of people with disabilities. But she needs a puppy parent to help her through her early months of training and socialisation. The volunteer will teach her the necessary skills which will be developed and enable her to become a canine partner. This requires a lot of time and commitment, but is very rewarding.

TRAVEL

There is so much more to Oz than Harbour, Reef & Rock Visiting Australia for the first time, the must see destinations are Sydney Harbour, The Great Barrier Reef and Uluru and it is easy to see why. However with over 22 thousand miles of coast line and 500 National Parks and 19 World Heritage sites there is so much more to see, here are just a few: Glasshouse Mountains National Park Located about one hour’s drive north of Brisbane and just a little inland from the Sunshine Coast, this park is a truly amazing paradise for nature lovers. There are hiking tracks, ranging in difficulty, leading through the forests to various lookouts, which once you reach them offer panoramic views from craggy volcanic peaks that tower above the surrounding landscape. Litchfield National Park Just south of Darwin this national park is filled with things to see and do ranging from ranger guided tours and activities, swimming in local swimming holes, hikes, camping, 4WD tours, and much more. With stunning waterfalls, gorges, and viewing platforms, this park is truly a treat for the eyes. Broome Located in the North West, Broome is somewhat isolated but well worth making the effort to visit. The dry season is the time to go and there is plenty to see and do from The Horizontal 28

Falls, riding camels or taking a Pearl Tour, to just relaxing on the beautiful Cable Beach, watching the sun go down and witnessing The Staircase to the Moon. Coober Pedy Located pretty much smack bang in the middle of South Australia, Coober Pedy is a desert town famous for producing most of the world’s high quality opal gems. It’s a bit of a quirky town, as most of it is underground! Due to the searing heat, and the abundance of mining equipment, people have built their dwellings underground to keep them cool during the hot summer days. Kangaroo Island Located just south of the capital city Adelaide (South Australia), Kangaroo Island is a perfect escape from city life. With over 509 kms of coastline, you’ll need longer to explore this island than you would first think. Freycinet National Park / Wineglass Bay Down in pristine Tasmania, sticking out into the sea on Tasmania’s mild east coast is the rugged and beautiful Freycinet Peninsula, home to Wineglass Bay. The peninsula includes numerous other bays which provide beautiful secluded swimming, snorkelling and scuba areas, rock pools, and many other attractions.

The Great Ocean Road The Great Ocean Road, located in Victoria, is arguably one of the best scenic drives in the world. Its official length is 243kms, but it will take you a full day to enjoy it due to the narrow and winding traffic lanes. It hugs the coast line with panoramic views of the ocean and cliffs, and winds its way through cool climate rain forests. If you are looking to head down under any time soon and would like to make your time even more enjoyable, it pays to speak with the experts, so give the south coast’s premier Australian expert a call today at Amity World Leisure Travel. 12 Manor Court, Barnes Wallis Road Segensworth East, Fareham PO15 5TH T: 01489 579975 E: holidays@amitytravel.co.uk W: www.amityleisuretravel.co.uk

Why See A Dental Hygienist? Seeing a hygienist really is good for your health. How? you may ask. It has been realised in recent years that soft inflamed gums allow bacteria into your blood stream and has links to heart disease, diabetes amongst other health issues. So by caring for your gums you are not only safeguarding your teeth but also looking after yourself. The first thing a good hygienist will do is get to know YOU, what

your concerns are, any difficulties you may have in cleaning your teeth. She will check around your gums looking for areas that are not pink and healthy. If a problem spot is found, she will show you where and explain how you can improve the area. A treatment plan can be discussed if required. To be thorough takes time and if you are used to a quick professional clean you will be surprised how different a treatment appointment of this kind can be. It is important to book the time you need, and not try and fit you into a short time slot. You will feel the difference. Dr Lizzie Judson (BDS) comments “Dorothy is a huge asset to our team. Due to her vast experience

‘’I am delighted with my implants - they are better looking than my old teeth. Thank you so much for your patience and skill. Your care has been amazing and made me feel so comfortable at the dentist!!”

and expertise patients love seeing her. They realise the better Dorothy Boardman (EDH) they care for their teeth, the less active treatment they need with me and Dr Jonathan Hall our other dentist, everyone is a winner!” At Wickham Dental Practice we offer a free no obligation consultation with Dot Boardman, our hygienist. Call or email us today (01329) 833855 reception@wickhamdental.com and Dot will look forward to helping you reach your goal of healthy gums and a healthier you. Dental Plans, including hygienist start from £11 per month.

Slimming World Success Suzi, who became a Slimming World consultant in 2014 and has welcomed many new members to her classes has said: “The success of my group in Bishops Waltham has been phenomenal and I have been blown away by the response. We have welcomed lots new members to the Bishops Waltham groups which has been absolutely fantastic but the numbers have grown to the extent that we have outgrown the Church Hall and need to relocate.” From Thursday January 7th, her classes will be held at The Jubilee Hall in Bishops Waltham,

and the class times will be exactly the same, at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. “This venue will offer the capacity to cope with membership numbers and also it has the advantage of on-site car parking.” Suzi's own story about her weight loss was featured in the Slimming World Magazine which is the Best Selling Slimming Magazine in the UK. She joined a Slimming World 2013 after feeling unhappy with her body weight and then reached her target weight of 8 stones 11lb in a year. “Since losing weight my confidence soared and I have achieved many things that I would never have dreamed of, such as taking part in the races for Race 4 Life & raising over £500 for Cancer,” she said.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes I knew from Sarah’s desperate phone call that the situation was urgent.

seamstress? It’s ok, I’ll just wear the black one. Thank goodness you never stuck it on eBay.”

“Tom, has it arrived or not?” “Yes, the courier’s just been.”

My grimace gave it away. “... Tom?”

“Right, let’s just hope it fits. We have to be there for seven!”

“If it’s any consolation, my feedback score is excellent.”

The Chairman’s annual dinner dance is the highlight of our social calendar (the other important dates being Christmas and my Mum coming for Sunday tea) so what to wear is a stress known only to the fairer sex. I on the other hand have no such conundrum, needing only to dust down my penguin suit (although sometimes the previous twelve months over-indulgence can result in a fight to the death with the trousers).

“Right well that’s it. I’m not going. I can’t go.”

So my problems were as nothing compared to Sarah’s. Rushing in from work, she ran upstairs to our bedroom, where on the bed lay her nemesis - the ball gown. I was half way up the stairs when an ear piercing scream froze me to the spot. “Tom!” I burst in to see my beloved stuck inside an oversized meringue. “They’ve sent the wrong dress!” Immediately I went into damage limitation mode. “It’s not too bad. Here, can I pin it?” “Since when did you become a 34

“I’ll tell you what, let’s ask our daughter.” I shouted Hannah, our sassy, fifteen year old fashionista. My eyes bored into her as I nodded furiously and said, “Doesn’t that dress look lovely on your Mum?” Hannah, glancing up momentarily from her smartphone, took one look at her Mother and said, “Have you not got anything else? What about that black one?” Dragging the Apple of my Eye out onto the landing I said, “Word of advice, don’t ever apply to be a diplomat, will you?” As Hannah rolled her eyes I heard Sarah call from the bedroom. “Right that’s it. I’m not going, you can go on your own.” Disaster loomed. I had to think quick. “Look, let’s see what Debi says.” Debi was Sarah’s best friend and my last hope. Hurriedly, I took some pictures.

“You could at least smile darling.” “Listen David Bailey, there isn’t time.” With Sarah in the bathroom, I seized my chance as Debi’s messages pinged through. “Sorry hon, that dress is awful!” (delete) “Is there nothing else? What about that gorgeous black -” (delete). Beep! The taxi arrived. Bustling Sarah into the back of the cab, I handed over her phone. “Debi hasn’t replied, but I’m sure she loved it.” Outside the hotel, Sarah made a final adjustment to her dress as she looked me up and down. “Have those trousers shrunk or something?” “Let’s just go in shall we?” Shuffling into the lobby, we were greeted by a glitter ball on legs The Chairman’s Wife. “Mrs Hughes, don’t you look... nice?” “There you go, she loves it”, I whispered through my fixed grin. “You’ve a lot to learn about women”, replied Sarah through gritted teeth. The night wore on. We danced and drank our way through it. Eventually it was late enough to make our excuses and leave so

Sarah poured me into the taxi and we headed home. “Be honest. Do I really look nice?” “You look absolootelee dee-vine dahling (hic!) and I don’t care what Debi said.” “Why, what did she say? You said she didn’t reply. Tom?” Then, our chauffeur, a skinny young man with a pierced nose decided to weigh in with his two penneth. “Take no notice love, my wife has the exact same dress and it looks great on her. Mind you, hers isn’t white, it’s bla-” “Just here thank you!” Testily, I cut him dead. Sipping coffee in the kitchen, I noticed Sarah busy on my phone.

MOTORING

McLaren 650S Spider By James Baggott

Things are moving quickly. Probably a bit too quickly. Like the four fighter pilots dog fighting above our heads, my brain is processing information faster than it should be, and as I watch the Mercedes GT S fall away into the distance behind me with snatched glimpses in the mirror, it’s clear there’s not much that’s going to catch this thing any time soon. At full throttle and with Track mode selected on the McLaren’s prominent dash dials, the 650S and I are moving at internal organ-rearranging speeds across the Welsh moors as it rifles through its ratios. The induction noise is furious, the sucking of the twin turbos gulping down air like a free diver coming up for air. The roof is down and we’re open to the elements; the small, leather and carbon clad cabin is filled with a rush of oxygen and the heady smell of the outdoors. I’m happy. At least I am now, thinking back to that adrenaline rush of speed. In the driver’s seat the 650S demands chess player levels of concentration but my word it is good. McLaren’s supercar offerings have played second fiddle to the drama from Maranello since they arrived – somewhat overlooked by supercar buyers who deemed them ‘too clinical’ and ‘numb’. That’s a shame, because what the British firm has achieved in such a short space of time is to be applauded. 38

The 650S is without doubt a match for any offering from Ferrari, but over four days with the car I can sort of see what they mean about the numbness. It’s hard to criticize a car for being too good, but this 650S really is. The stomach churning acceleration – which will see it hit 124mph in just 8.6 seconds – is incredible, but it’s laid down in such a perfect manner that it feels like a computer game, not a heart tugging machine. That said, it’s an absolute stunning car to look at. This is the MSO version of the 650S Spider, which means it’s even more exclusive than its brothers. The flippy paint, that shimmers beautifully from black to purple, is an £8,632 option, while it’s adorned with carbon fibre extras like mirror arms (£3,505), diffuser (£7,463) and even yellow seatbelts that you will be charged £2,247 for the pleasure of changing the colour of. It’s amazing what customers will pay when presented with an extensive options list, isn’t it? What they’re paying for really, of course, is the exclusivity that MSO offers. And supercar buyers like nothing more than exclusivity. That and how a car makes them feel. Fortunately it ticks both boxes very well indeed. I spent a lot of time in the 650S and although over long distances found it a little uncomfortable – the seats don’t recline enough for my giraffe-like limbs – it was easy

to ignore thanks to its astonishing performance and the glow it gives you every time you climb in through those dramatic doors. The steering has a crispness to it and feedback I’ve not experienced in a very long time, while it’s hard to imagine how anything could ever feel any quicker than this 641bhp supercar. Goodness knows how a P1 could offer an experience any more intense than this – even now I can’t fathom anything being any quicker. But to the ultimate question, one I was asked many times during our test: would I buy one? As much as I love it, as good as it is and as beautiful as it looks, I’m afraid I just couldn’t. It doesn’t float my boat like a Ferrari 488 and I can’t help looking at the figures and thinking you could have the Mercedes, Civic Type R and Mazda from this test and some change for fuel for the same price. The McLaren is good, but not three cars good.

The Knowledge McLaren 650S Spider MSO Price: £215,250 Engine: 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo Power: 641bhp, 678Nm Max speed: 204mph 0-60mph: 3.0s MPG: 24.2 Emissions: 275g/km

Super Mario Kart For Real Iain Betson now knows where they took the inspiration for the video game. Apologies if you’re an Italian reading this; I have no wish to confirm cultural stereotypes. You know the type: Americans are loud, Germans disciplined, we Brits are stuffy. But, sorry Italy, when it comes to you and motorised road transport, the two of you should never have met. I love your food, your weather, your style, but boy am I scared of your driving! This year, our family holiday was spent on the Amalfi coast. The temperature never dipped below 34°C, the lemon trees groaned under the weight of their fruit and the Limoncello tasted divine. But whenever I ventured out of the hotel, I felt I was

taking my life in my hands. Our original plan was to hire a car in Naples, but a quick search strongly advised to the contrary. Confirmation that this was the right decision came within three minutes of being picked up at the airport. Scooters and cars observed no lane discipline, horns were used incessantly and the breaking of speed limits by large margins was commonplace. Every car boasted dents, scuffs and/or missing wing mirrors, I saw a Chevrolet Spark being driven around town even though it had been involved in a major front-end smash, and the buses appeared to have emerged from a war-torn country. Italy: home to Ferrari with its prancing horse, Lamborghini’s bull and Maserati’s Neptune’s trident badge - perhaps these logos are subtle nods that Italy should stick to four-legged road transport or put its faith in the Gods when it comes to moving around safely. Ciao for now!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
