Plus What’s On, Puzzles and Local News

This year’s Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition attracted an impressive 201 entries from 38 butchers, one being your local butcher, Grovers who proudly won Young Sausage Maker 2017. Other categories were Hampshire Sausage, Hot Pie, Traditional Pork Pie, Black Pudding, Meatballs and Faggots, Charcuterie and Speciality Pork Sausage. Frankie Hale age 21 from Grover Butchers says “I entered two years ago and didn’t win but I listened to the judges feedback and that’s helped me win this time. Having the award up in the shop is a great talking point with customers. I love my job, from talking to customers to the skilfully breaking down a carcass into cuts.”

IT’S OFFICIAL! GROVER BUTCHER IS BEST FOR SAUSAGES! The coveted prize, Supreme Champion 2017 went to LJ Smith Butchers located in Riverside, Eastleigh. If you are meatball and faggot fan, take note of first time entrant Pete Williamson of The Hog Shack in Bishopstoke who came top in that category.

Editor’s Letter

A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A REST For the last five years of publishing Discover Meon Valley, Tania has edited this edition. Tania and I manage 12 Discover magazines between us (see page 55 for details) and we thought it was time for a little swap around so you’ve got me now (for the next five years, god willing!). You won’t notice any great changes but one thing I prefer to do is include as much What’s On as I can and this means spreading the net a little wider than the boundaries of the Meon Valley area. We are blessed with a great road network that means we can get from Wickham to Winchester in just half an hour so this edition’s What’s On includes events a little further afield; Stockbridge, Romsey, Totton, Winchester and to make it easy I’ve circled the local ones for you!

We welcome anyone in the community with a piece of news or story to tell to contact us and we’ll do our best to include it in the next issue. Your free copy of Discover is only made possible because of our advertisers and nobody “reads” the Yellow Pages so we do our best to provide a regular, enjoyable read that benefits our advertisers, too. So, next time you need a handyman, a plumber or solicitor have a look at the index at the back and take your pick! Your next Discover is the June/July issue so look out for it in the post! Copy deadline: 10 May

Home Interiors

A HOME WITH CHARACTER There’s more to interior style than eye-catching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from some appealing detailing, the restoration of authenticity or some aids to functionality? Sometimes it is worth considering some more architectural alterations, which don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions. Improve your floors If you have original timber boards in good condition beneath your floor coverings, then sanding them back, staining and/or oiling them is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer; alternatively, employ a professional. Boards in poor condition can be renovated to an extent, or consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home. Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles, generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged they should be repairable, and with the right specialist the results will be dramatic. Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings contribute enormously to the overall look of a home. Research carefully, to ensure they correspond in scale and design to the age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes going to a specialist is necessary and this is not cheap. Ease of alteration depends on your circumstances but 8

You can buy panelling off the peg or, as here, made bespoke to suit your room. Price varies, Titchmarsh & Goodwin: 01473 252158; this is definitely a project to bear in mind when considering renovation work. What about woodwork? In living rooms lacking storage, build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. The same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery. Consider these additions carefully, so that they complement your home in terms of scale and detailing. And, plan to remove and replace completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating when possible. Replacing poor quality or badly designed interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed examples or find well-made reproductions; also, decide whether to paint them or, conversely, strip them. è

Panelling can enhance a room or hallway and comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit. Get the lighting right You can improve inadequate or imbalanced built in lighting or out of character fittings: either discreetly with minimal downlighters in the ceiling, simple wall lights or versatile LED strips - or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers. All in the details Small details like cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets and even the humble pull cord can all make a difference. Cheap plastic light switches can be swapped for upmarket ones which are lovely to look at and pleasant to touch. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of letterbox, bell and numbers.

MONEY SAVING IDEAS TO GET YOU BACK ON TRACK IN 2017 If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank. Discount websites Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount. Couponing You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. 12

Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products. Airbnb Airbnb is a website offering accommodation in privately-owned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget. You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a booking; others offer an ‘Instant Book’ facility. è

Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service. Amazon Prime Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage, and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members. Low cost hotel rooms and car hire

Several websites, including, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor. com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. These same websites offer reduced car rental, but you may be able to save even more money using price comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Carrentals, and TravelSupermarket.

Mr Nick Carter is a Consultant Laparoscopic Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeon practising at Spire Portsmouth Hospital

“Dear Doctor” I have been battling with my weight for many years despite trying numerous diets and exercise, which is having a really negative impact on my lifestyle. I’ve been considering weight loss surgery for a while now – what are my options? I find this to be a recurring problem and one many of my patients have struggled with over the years. They’re able to lose the weight but struggle keeping it off and soon find it creeping back on again. This is what we term ‘yo yo’ dieting, which your body can not continue doing and eventually, you become a burnt out yo yo dieter with any form of dieting working less and less effectively. When you get to this stage, surgery is the only scientifically proven long term safe and effective solution to help you.

Weight loss surgery provides you with a tool to help keep the weight off in the long term. It is a well-established procedure performed under general anaesthetic, using keyhole laparoscopic surgery and requires only one or two nights in hospital. Most patients go home needing only paracetamol to treat the little pain from the tiny keyhole cuts. You will be monitored and undergo careful assessment including regular blood tests for the next two years following your surgery with your consultant, specialist nurses and dietitian. AUSTRALIA, YOUR WAY When it comes to holidays, there are two types of people. The relaxers – who spend their time lying on a sun-lounger, and the wanderers – who pack a travel map ready to go exploring. At Amity Travel we cover both, but we also offer an option for the people somewhere in-between: the DIY-ers. The people who look for the best of both worlds, but most importantly, they decide whether they go exploring the local flora and fauna or find the nearest beach to top up their tan. And the best way to travel as a DIY-er? The road trip of a lifetime. Sure, it sounds daunting having to drive in a different country but the truth is that it offers great value for money and the freedom of the road is priceless. Amity Travel will do all the planning before you leave, giving you an itinerary you can follow as much or as little as you wish, for a very reasonable price. Take Australia for example; if you enjoy thrill-seeking and don’t mind occasionally getting wet, then the East Coast is the ideal place for you. Flying into Sydney gives you a couple of days to explore the incredible landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House or a chance to relax on Bondi Beach before your adventure begins. Head up the coast to Brisbane for a night of sightseeing and delicious food on the River Dinner Cruise, before an opportunity to visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Moving up through Queensland, a trip across to Fraser Island is a must, with the idyllic scenery of

Lake McKenzie and gorgeous untouched beaches. However, your final destination may well be the best of them all - the Great Barrier Reef. There are boat tours galore, along with picturesque walks and of course, scuba diving and snorkelling. If the East Coast is too city-based for your taste, why not fly into Adelaide for a more cultural start to your trip, with plenty of Art Galleries and Museums, as well as beautiful nature trails to explore. Next, journey inland towards the Outback, to witness the infamous natural features of Ayers Rock (Uluru). Heading up through the Northern Territory, Alice Springs offers another side to Australia, with the oldest aboriginal art in the world and a breathtaking lava-like sunset at Anzac Hill. Your final stop across the heart of Australia would be Darwin, rounding off your journey with anything you desire. Put your feet up on a sunlounger or search the flea markets for a bargain, visit an aviation museum or a water park - you will never want to leave. The truth is that it doesn’t have to be Australia. At Amity Travel we will create a holiday anywhere in the world that you will always cherish. From a city break in Europe, to a three-month adventure across several continents, we will build your dream trip, piece by piece. Contact our experts today to start your personalised adventure of a lifetime.

8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and yours). It’s the best detangling brush I’ve found yet and can be used on wet or dry hair. £11.99 from Kids love nail polish. Schools don’t love it quite so much. If (like me) you’re hopeless at remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Not only is it toxin-free and available in several child-friendly shades, but it can be washed off with warm soapy water. Powder-pink glitter is a favourite in my house, although my son prefers Rio Green. £6.95,

Days out

From emergency wees in the park to dropped dummies, children just attract germs. Hand sanitising gels are handy but not always that child-friendly. Aquaint, on the other hand, is 100% natural and 20

formulated without strong chemicals, preservatives or alcohol. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, but is completely safe, so can be used on everything from hands to drinks bottles. £2.49 - £4.99 from Boots, Mothercare and other retailers. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing on name tags, try Tinyme labels. They’re printed with your child’s name and a design of your choice. The Essentials Pack (from £24) comes with more than 200 labels, including iron-on labels for clothes, and different sized stickers for shoes, pencil cases and so on. They’re designed to stay on through washing, tumble drying and general day-to-day use. Tinyme also make personalised bags, books, drinks bottles and a ton of other items, handy if your child is particularly prone to misplacing their possessions.

Play dates

After-school playdates are great at keeping the kids out of your hair, but it’s all too easy to forget to swap car seats with the other parents. The new Mifold can help to make sure you’re never again caught out with three kids and only two booster seats. Unlike traditional booster seats, Mifold adjusts the seatbelt to fit the child, rather than raising the child up to fit the belt. That means it’s far smaller than a car seat; small enough to keep in a glove box or even your child’s school bag. It can be adjusted to fit children aged from around four to 12, and it meets the highest legal standards for child restraint systems. £49.95 from John Lewis.

FLOWER POWER You can inexpensively and easily grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. Just about every perennial flower is available to grow from seed, and once they have reached flowering size they’ll just keep on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, Echinaceae, geranium, perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or use a seed catalogue and start planning; you could save a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed. To start, you need containers to sow the seed into – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells – and some good quality 22

compost and your chosen seeds. It helps if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well). Sieve compost through a compost sieve to remove the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays, make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below. Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, and level it off to make it easier to sow the seeds evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. è

It is easier to look after seedlings if the seed has been sown in straight rows; make the rows using a plastic plant label. Check the packets for the correct depths for the seeds, and if you are sowing seeds in small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber (or a pencil if you don’t have one). RootTrainers are ideal for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Don’t sow too densely or the seedlings will need more thinning out and will be more likely to become drawn, leggy and weak. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the required depth. Next, use a watering can with the rose attached and water thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite

small, it is best to stand the tray in a shallow tray or bowl of water, so the compost absorbs water from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be displaced. Finally, label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. Many perennials need heat for the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist capillary matting. Once the seedlings appear, gradually lower the temperature and then prick each one out into its own pot. Keep them fed and watered as they grow and in just a few weeks or months you will have some great plants ready for the garden.

GET INTO GOLF, GIRLS! Local girls are being encouraged to take up golf as part of a programme run by Hampshire Ladies County Golf Association. Aimed at girls between 6 and 18 years of age, the focus of the weekly sessions is on having fun, and meeting other likeminded girls, while learning to play the game in a sociable environment. East Horton Golf Club in Fair Oak was part of this exciting programme and delivered a 6 week ‘Get into Golf ’ course starting on in March and April. After the initial six week course, delivered by a PGA qualified coach, girls can continue to develop their golf skills at five further monthly sessions held at one of the County Academy Centres. Cabinet Lead for Leisure Cllr Alan Broadhurst said; “This is a great opportunity for local young girls to ‘have a go’ at golf and we may identify a potential ‘Women’s British Open’ champion of the future!” It costs just £20 per person to take part in this programme,

which includes the six week ‘Get into Golf course’ and attendance at the five monthly sessions held throughout the year. Casual dress is encouraged and all equipment will be supplied. To find out when the next courses starts and where visit

ALL ABOARD FOR THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY ON HAMPSHIRE’S BUSES Finding the right change for a bus fare will soon be a thing of the past in Hampshire, as the County Council and bus operators First, Go South Coast and Stagecoach have pledged to bring forward investment in contactless payment technology. Paying by card makes buying a bus fare easier for passengers and quicker for bus drivers, speeding up overall journey times. It is another improvement to buses which already have free WiFi on board and audio / visual next stop announcements which are invaluable both to visitors unfamiliar with the county, as well as people with sensory limitations. Close to 900 buses will soon be fitted with contactless payment technology for people to pay by debit or credit cards, with around half of the buses having this installed before the summer.

And Another ing

“Tom look at the state of the house, it’s a disgrace.” Placing my copy of Vauxhall Insignia Monthly onto the coffee table (after pushing the empty tea mugs to one side) I tossed yesterday’s paper onto the floor and bid my dearly beloved to snuggle down next to me on the sofa. “Now, my Little Chickadee, what seems to be the problem?”

skirting boards. And Tom? Please don’t start rummaging.”

“It’s getting beyond a joke. This place needs a good going over. It needs bottoming!”

My yellowing report slipped from my grasp. “Nothing.”

Blanching slightly, I pressed Sarah to elucidate. “When you say -” “What I mean Tom, is that we need to spring clean the house.” Sensing my rendezvous with Nigel in the Old Paraffin Lamp suddenly under threat I made a gallant attempt to head the cleaning cavalry off at the pass. “No problem, just name the day darling.” “The day Tom, is today, and the time is now. Here.” A pair of bright yellow gloves landed in my lap. And so, it came to pass that my Saturday afternoon, just like my very first car (a red Renault 5), was written off. “Right Tom, first job is the spare room upstairs. It’s like an Aladdin’s cave up there. Start with the skirting boards - yes the 34

My school report from 1983. English - Tom is an inquisitive boy who unfortunately is easily distracted, he -” “Tom what are you doing?”

“Exactly, nothing. You haven’t even made a start on the skirting boards. You’re rummaging.” “Im not rummaging, I’m organising.” “Well it looks like rummaging to me.” Shamefully, I pulled out my tongue at the back of the slammed door. My rummaging - sorry, organising continued. Old concert tickets, football programmes, all manner of nostalgia collected over half a lifetime all snuggled together in plastic bags. The bucket of soapy water sat cooling at my feet. But Sarah was right, this room wouldn’t clean itself, I had to take action - and quick. I Googled cleaning services near our post code. But there was no time for delegation. Taking a deep breath

I dropped to my hands and knees and attacked the woodwork. And do you know something? In scrubbing away, I felt a pride and dignity in honest physical labour I hadn’t experienced since snoozing away the night shift at the Sunblest bakery during my student summers. After an hour of toiling the room was cleaned to within two inches of its life. What next? Of course - our own bedroom. Replenishing my pale with hot water I attacked our bedroom woodwork. It was then I saw it - and life would never be the same again. It was my damascene moment. On Sarah’s bedside cabinet was a copy of Spark Joy, The Art of Tidying by Marie Kondo. Eventually Sarah reappeared with two mugs of tea to find Yours Truly sat cross-legged, Spark Joy in one hand and a rolled up t-shirt in the other. “Tom, what on earth are you doing? And why are all the drawers open?” Folding some pyjamas, I gently enquired of my wife, “Why have you never mentioned this book before? It’s a revelation - look at my sock drawer.” Proudly I pulled the handle to reveal my socks laid out like little fat soldiers.

“Well that’s fine, but that pair is odd and those are mine. And what have you done in my wardrobe?” Sarah’s face told me my attempts at reorganising had not achieved the desired effect. Tutting and muttering, Sarah began the task of undoing all my good work. Opening another draw she closed her eyes and hissed -”Tom, just, just leave everything to me and go and clean the bathroom. You can’t do much damage in there surely!” An hour later I limped gingerly downstairs to find Sarah sipping coffee whilst flicking through Good Housekeeping. “Tom are you ok ? Have you been crying?” “No. By the way, have you ever mistaken Flash disposable bathroom cleaning cloths for Andrex moist toilet tissues?” “No. Why?” “Oh, no reason.” “Well you’ve done very well today. Come and snuggle down next to me.” “If it’s all the same to you dear, I’ll stand.”

I LOVE GIN. AND APPARENTLY, I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE... Fetch the ice and tonic – the gin industry in the UK is indeed booming, with 49 distilleries opening in 2016 alone, and £400 million spent on buying gin bottles. The trend for small batch gin is still on the increase this year with new gin lists popping up in restaurants, pubs and bars all over the county, Winchester leading the way of course! But do you know which gin you actually prefer? And why? The Hampshire Wine School offers an education, in a fun and relaxed way at the Winchester Wessex Hotel, on how gin is created, and how to make THE perfect Gin & Tonic by comparing 5 styles of gin, 3 premium tonics and 5 types of botanicals. A real mouth-watering and eyeopening experience for £32.50pp. Do not miss out on Winchester’s forthcoming House of Gin Festival either, which is returning to Winchester GuildHall on Saturday 27th May, 5pm-10pm, in association with Winchester Distillery and East Imperial tonic and mixers. The Festival will have three Gin bars showcasing a wide selection of small batch and Award Winning Gins. Producers shall also run masterclasses on how their gin is distilled, offer tastings and an opportunity to purchase bottles at a discounted rate. Copperhead Gin, Nordes gin, Marylebone Gin, Liverpool Gin,

Learn about wine, champagne, beer, gin and whisky as well as food & wine pairings in a fun way, with likeminded people, in a relaxed atmosphere 42

Nginiuos Gin, Brennen & Brown Gin, 6 o’clock Gin, Burleighs Gin and Elephant Gin to name a few will be presented on the day. Tickets on sale for £8.03 at My favourite gin of the moment is Pinkster Gin, as it makes a refreshingly different G&T, with a delicate raspberry flavour appealing both to seasoned gin drinkers and recent converts. It even won ‘Overall Best Contemporary Gin’ at The Gin Guide Awards 2017! So, how about this wonderful ‘Je T’Aime’ pink cocktail for the one you love… • 37.5ml Pinkster Gin • 15ml Chambord liqueur (or raspberry equivalent) • 50ml Pineapple juice Shake hard to create the foam layer and double strain in Martini glass. Float raspberries on top. Enjoy!

Short Story

Vinny burst through the door of the community centre. “You’ll never guess what’s on top of the bike shed!”

“I’m no Bill Oddie, but I think I know the difference,” he said. “Come and have a look if you don’t believe me.”

At the mention of the bike shed Eunice’s heart skipped a beat; had Vinny discovered her guilty secret?

Very reluctantly Eunice pulled on her anorak and followed Vinny to the bike shed. A fat brown bantam sat clucking on the flat roof admiring the view.

She’d been stacking chairs, assuming that all the members of her ‘Trimmer You!’ slimming club had departed. It had been a tough session. She’d had to be particularly strict with the group about avoiding the temptation of chocolate over the Bank Holiday weekend. There had been tears. Now Vinny was back, his ‘Trimmer of the Week’ rosette flapping in the breeze. “An actual chicken!” he continued breathlessly. “Sat there bold as brass.” Eunice stared at him, her mind racing. A chicken was not what she was expecting. “Don’t be daft,” she reasoned. “There’s no way a chicken could get up there - they can’t fly.” “Try telling that to this one,” Vinny laughed. “It’s probably just a pigeon,” Eunice said firmly, hoping this would be enough to make Vinny finally go home. 46

“I wonder where it’s come from,” Eunice said, her eyes searching the rest of the roof. “Someone round here must keep chickens.” “Perhaps it’s been living wild,” Vinny said. “A chicken wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.” “Well they had to live in the wild originally,” Vinny answered. “This might be the last of the wild chickens.” “We’ll have to get it down,” Eunice said irritably, reminded, more than ever, how annoying Vinny could be. “We can’t lock up and leave it there. Can you reach up and grab it?” “I’m not sure.” Vinny looked worried. “I’ve never held a bird before.”

Eunice did not find this at all surprising. The bird ruffled her wings and stared at them indignantly. “Just grab her firmly around her sides,” Eunice said. “I’ll go and phone the caretaker to see if he knows who she belongs to.” Eunice went back into the community hall and paced up and down. She needed time to think. Within moments Vinny popped his head around the door. “Mystery solved!” he said cheerfully. “This lady walked into the car park and asked if I’d seen her chicken.” “Who was it?” Eunice hoped her ordeal was finally over. “Someone from the village,” Vinny said. “She said chickens can fly, they’re just not very good at it. Apparently this one’s always trying to escape.” “So it wasn’t a wild chicken then?” Eunice smirked.

“No, but I think it was a magic one. Look...” From behind his back Vinny produced a large Easter egg wrapped in pink foil. “It had rolled down the side of the shed. That chicken must have laid it.” Eunice stared first at Vinny in disbelief, and then at the incriminating confectionary. She had one last trick up her sleeve. “A chocolate egg laying chicken!” she gasped. “I’ve heard of them but I’ve never seen one in real life.” She held out her hand for the egg. “I’d better take care of that.” “What are you going to do with it?” Vinny whispered as though afraid to wake it. “Do you think it will hatch?” “Maybe,” Eunice said, “particularly if I take it home and put it somewhere nice and warm.” Which, in a roundabout way, had been Eunice’s plan for that egg all along.

One hundred years after the Russian Revolution, the Royal Choral Society returns to Winchester Cathedral to perform outstanding works by Russian composers – Prokoviev’s ‘Alexander Nevsky’, a cantata based on the composer’s score for Eisenstein’s 1938 film, and ‘The Bells’, Rachmaninov’s choral masterpiece. The choir will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which will open the concert with Borodin’s ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’. The concert serves as a reminder of the incredible contribution of Russian music to the Western canon. With musicians of the highest calibre performing in the stunning surroundings of this great cathedral, it will be a truly evocative concert.
