Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston My youngest went off to university in September, his sister already being there, leaving me and my husband with a part-time empty nest. I’ve heard some parents talk of devastation at children leaving; and others with delight at the freedom. We’re somewhere in the middle.

We’re quite sad to see them go, and it does seem quiet without the comings and goings each day. But my goodness, life is simpler, more impulsive and considerably cheaper with just two of us to plan for and fund. With this change in mind though, I was able to look at this edition’s forthcoming ‘what’s on’ listings with a blank diary. I didn’t need to check on whether I was expected at a family meal, was being waited on for a lift somewhere or was going to have an uninvited tag-along hinting about what I could buy for them. Our editorial coordinator, Izzy, says this autumn is the season for fayres offering craft, art, gifts, vintage and antiques. As I can barely sew on a button, I’m a buyer at these events rather than a stallholder. But if you are a clever sort, Fareham Borough Council is calling for creative individuals to take part in the gift and craft fayre to be held on the 28th November. Vintage is very in of course, but not for the condition of your house. If you have children, you’ll know as soon as they can walk, your property will start to suffer. So that’s my other autumn plan – get some home improvements underway knowing we have a chance of it staying pristine…till Christmas at least when the chaos will resume. Until next time.

Sean Hughes - Mumbo Jumbo Multi award winning comedian Sean Hughes is back with a new show on 7th November called Mumbo Jumbo. Throughout his life he has been battling to stay on the right side of sanity. This is because in middle age he has realised that the two sides of his brain are in constant conflict. There is common sense against mumbo jumbo and mumbo jumbo seems to have the upper hand. The show consists of stories including being serenaded at the break of dawn by Robert Smith, trekking mountain gorillas in Rwanda and coming to the conclusion that he will never have a proper conversation with his dear mum. There will be a few poems and a 3-minute musical about ageing too.

INTERVIEW

The Maccabees Return to Southampton

Number 1 Album ‘Marks To Prove It’ Out Now

Exclusive:

Izzy Ewen of Discover Magazines interviews guitarist, Felix White

Left to right: Felix White, Sam Doyle, Orlando Weeks, Rupert Jarvis, Hugo White

The Maccabees break their three year silence with their eagerly anticipated self-produced 4th album with the recent explosive single ‘Marks To Prove It’.

What has been the best gig for you over the past ten years since your debut single came out? We’ve had some special ones. In Southampton we had some great early times at Lennons right through to the shows at the Guildhall. What has been your favourite venue or festival to play at and why? Brixton Academy in London holds a lot of meaning to us, having grown up watching bands there, and it still stands up as the best place for a show even having been round the world. Where do you retreat to when song writing? We’ve got a studio in Elephant where we do everything, write, record etc What is your favourite lyric you’ve written and sung to date? Probably not for us to decide Whose music do you listen to most on tour? I’ve got into a habit of listening to the Beta Band a lot. I just got into Dead Can Dance on the last tour too. Who would be your ideal band or artist to tour with? We’ve played or toured with a lot of them. We’ve talked with Foals about doing something together sometime this year which would be fun.

6

If you could have dinner with any singer dead or alive who would it be and why? Too many. But Joe Strummer probably. Any interesting musical collaborations in the pipeline? Just touring the record at the moment .... What are your hopes for next year professionally? I think this album is going to carry us to a few moments, just not sure exactly what they’ll be yet! Hoping there will be some special shows. Tell us what you will be releasing next and what we can look forward to from The Maccabees? The album is just out so we are into the idea of celebrating that at the moment and looking forward to the November Guildhall show. Beautiful place.

“Their best record yet” Q Magazine “A triumph” The Times “A beautifully crafted album” NME

The Maccabees will play at Southampton O2 Guildhall on Tue 24th November 2015

HealthSpace Bringing A Unique Service to Bishops Waltham HealthSpace in Bishops Waltham arose following a change in career for its owner, Claire Symes. Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 15 years, Claire always had a strong interest in physical and mental wellbeing. As a migraine sufferer who has benefited from holistic therapies, she retrained as an Aromatherapist and Reflexologist but after failing to find suitable premises from which to practice she realised that other practitioners must be in a similar situation. Hence the HealthSpace concept was born, offering a variety of disciplines together under one roof. HealthSpace’s design was driven by Claire’s desire to create an inspirational and highly

professional environment for its practitioners and a tranquil and inviting atmosphere for its clients. Whether you want to regain optimal health or simply to be indulged, HealthSpace offers an expert and integrated approach to healing and health. Its highly qualified practitioners specialise in a range of disciplines including Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture and Counselling. It also boasts a luxurious spa room for Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology and a treatment room for manicures and pedicures. A separate studio is ideal for bespoke Pilates and Yoga classes. Maximum class sizes of six ensure plenty of 1-2-1 tuition. The studio may also be

hired out for training, workshops and meetings, as well as private usage. HealthSpace in Bishops Waltham is on the doorstep of the town’s shops and parking facilities. It offers disabled access and has conveniently located ground floor treatment rooms. HealthSpace is proud to bring a unique service to Bishops Waltham unrivalled in the surrounding area. HealthSpace opens on 25th September 2015. To find out more, please come in and say hello. www.healthspace.co.uk 01489 874100

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Last Tuesday morning I drew back our bedroom curtains and watched bleary-eyed as the autumn wind sent plastic bottles, newspapers and Dominos pizza cartons swirling into my neighbour’s gardens. Cursing the litter louts who had blighted The Avenue, I turned to my slumbering beloved and said, “Sarah, what’s with all the rubbish outside? Should I ring the council?” From under the duvet came the muffled reply, “What day is it?” “Tuesday. Why?” My Dearly Beloved suddenly sprang from the matrimonial divan and stood frozen on our 80% wool twist, deep in thought. “Yesterday was a bank holiday... Tom, is Mrs Murphy out the front?” “Yes, why?” The look of horror on Sarah’s face said it all. Clasping our hands to our faces, we both screamed together: “The bins!” Time was of the absolute essence. “Tom, what are you doing?” “I’m er, looking for my other sock.” “Never mind socks, just go down as you are! There isn’t time!” “In my jimjams? Why can’t I get 14

dressed?” “Because... you are a man, you don’t care what people think. Now go! And don’t wake your little nephew.” Heartened that my sartorial insouciance gave me licence to roam the streets half naked, I leapt quietly down the stairs, through the kitchen and out onto the patio where lay the dreaded recycling receptacles. Dropping the waste food bin (eugh) onto the cardboard bin, I stuck the one for plastic bottles under my arm and ran towards the front door. I made it just in time to see the pink recycling lorry meandering away down The Avenue. Oh well, maybe we could just wait until next week? The bang from the window above told me that wasn’t an option.

and out of the open-sided van. Eventually, I caught up with the happy band of council employees at the end of The Avenue. Triumphantly, I dropped my containers at one of the Recycle Operative’s feet. Ignoring me completely, he joined up with his pals as the lorry trundled out of my road. And there I remained, standing in my pyjamas on the corner of The Avenue and Harrington Drive, smelling of stale milk. Undeterred I pressed on, managing to barge my way past the lorry to dump my bins at the feet of a tattooed Hell’s Angel in a hi-viz vest. “Can you empty my bins, please?”

Along the road I limped, hitching the boxes up onto my shoulders as bottles and tins clattered down around me.

Giant Haystack’s surly half-brother gave me a stare and then with his massive paw began lifting up my receptacles. Thank goodness for that, now I could end this nightmare, go home and tweezer the gravel out of my feet. Wrong!

“Mr Hughes? You’ve dropped something!”

The black bin crashed an inch away from my foot, un-emptied.

Mrs Murphy, aggressively sweeping her designated part of the pavement, shook her head as I staggered on, cursing my burden of domestic detritus.

“What’s the matter?”

Up ahead, a swarm of tattooed bin men swung plastic boxes in

“There’s a tin can in your cardboard box bin.” “Did you know that in China, a new coal-fired power station comes online every six months, so I don’t think one tin…”

“Sorry sir, I can’t take your bin now, I’ve put a sticker on it.” I looked down. On the side of the container was now stuck a bright yellow note – “Incorrectly Packed Bin”. Giant Haystacks shrugged his shoulders as he and his lorry rolled down Harrington Drive. The sky darkened, commuters stared. There was nothing left for it. The walk of shame awaited. I carried my still-full bins back home. Mrs Murphy shook her head as Sarah opened the door, took one look at my burden, then turned on her heel and went back inside. We didn’t speak until lunch. Billy, my little nephew, was sat at the kitchen table mashing his eggy soldiers as I shuffled mournfully towards the patio. “Uncle Tom, when I grow up I want to be a bin man.” “Why on earth would you want to be a bin man?” “Well, you get to wear a cool hi-viz jacket, you get a good pension, and you only have to work one day a week....”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Meon Valley area and Justin is finding that his approach is

a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Car Traffic Control Iain Betson thinks if airports were like our car parks, we’d never get on a plane. On my return flight from holiday I spent time, prior to boarding, watching the preceding flights being prepared for take-off. I was struck by the care the ground and air crew took when moving the aircraft from the jet bridge to the taxiway. Each person knew their job and checks were made prior to each manoeuvre. I particularly noted that an aircraft, ready to push back from the gate, was not allowed to start its engines as a second aircraft was taxiing immediately behind it. When it was clear, the tractor carefully pushed the jet backwards onto the taxiway. Only then did the dispatcher give the signal for the pilot to start up. I contrast this with the actions of drivers in multi-

storey car parks. Most have speed limit signs and bumps, and give way markings on the road. Yet the driving attitude of more than a few motorists is just breathtaking: speeding around corners, narrowly missing pedestrians or not checking properly when reversing out of spaces. If a pilot acted in a similar fashion, throwing the jet out of the gate and speeding along the taxiway, we would surely shout about airline safety. Contrasting this with the free-for-all car parks and the same high potential for an accident, there really is no difference. We rightfully expect the airlines to look after us but, when it comes to driving, it’s our responsibility to look after the safety of ourselves and other road users. After all, we’ve parked our cars, the reckless drivers become the at-risk pedestrians.

MOTORING

BMW X1 By James Baggott

What is it? This is the totally revised BMW X1. Gone are the weird looks of the last model and in comes a fresh, chunky design that makes it look like a shrink-wrapped X5, but in a good way. One in 10 BMWs sold was an X1 at the height of its success and it was continually in the top three most popular cars sold by the manufacturer, so this new model has a lot to live up to. Aimed at “young, sporty” buyers, the maker believes this is a lifestyle vehicle that can be used every day.

What’s under the bonnet? There is one petrol engine and three diesel options. The former xDrive20i has 190bhp, 280Nm of torque and can hit 62mph in 7.4 seconds. Diesels come in 18d, 20d and 25d variants. The sDrive18d is front wheel drive only, the latter two four-wheel drive like the petrol. We’d pick the £30,630-priced xDrive20d, though. Why? Well it comes with four-wheel drive, is £6k cheaper than the top-of-the-range model and still performs well.

What’s the spec like? Standard equipment is plentiful. Navigation, DAB radio, 40:20:40 split rear seat (with handy buttons to fold them flat from the boot), alloys and an automatic opening and closing boot that you can 24

operate with a wave of your foot, are all included. As you move up the range, larger alloys, different trims and LED headlights are added, while the M Sport adds a smart styling pack too. On the options list is a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon speakers and a head-up display, plus lots more.

What’s it like to drive? Frankly, quite brilliant. For what is essentially a small SUV it belies its size on the road. Bumps are soaked up beautifully and the ride is plush. The high seating position is excellent and commanding and the diesel engine and automatic gearbox work seamlessly. It’s a very competent package and feels decidedly premium. BMW has worked hard on the chassis for this new X1 and it shows.

Any rivals? Plenty. Direct rivals come in the shape of the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA, although we’d argue not quite as good looking as the Beemer. But then cast your net further afield and you could include the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and recently launched Renault Kadjar in the same bracket. Those latter options lack the cache of the BMW’s premium badge, but offer considerably better value for money.

The verdict We loved the BMW X1. The last one passed us by somewhat – we felt the looks were strange and out of proportion, and it seemed to lack the style we’d come to expect from BMW. This new model is much better, though. The chunky looks make it really stand out on the road – even if it does look like a miniature X5 (but that’s no bad thing) – and the interior is a lovely place to spend time. As you’d expect it feels premium, rides beautifully and has an impressive amount of standard kit. We’d go as far to say that if you’re looking for a premium SUV with diminutive dimensions, this should be at the top of your shopping list.

The Knowledge Model: BMW X1 xDrive20d Price: £30,630 Engine: 2.0-litre diesel Power: 188bhp, 400Nm Max speed: 136mph 0-62mph: 7.4 MPG: 57.6 Emissions: 128g/km

GARDENING

Leaf Litter By Pippa Greenwood

Are you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

At this time of year most of us are feeling as if we are being buried alive by falling leaves. Yes, the vast majority of leaves that are dropping from our own and our neighbours’ trees are pretty enough, and for a while their bright reds, yellows and oranges look stunning both on and off the tree. The problem is that it seems as if there is a virtually endless supply of them and after that initial flurry of pretty colour, the positive feeling soon starts to diminish. Leaves that are allowed to build up in your garden can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in a soggy blanket of leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - and the sooner you get started the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive (provided you don’t rake too deeply and end up ploughing up the stones too!). If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves (or worse still, a big lawn and lots of leaves too) then the

28

easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the hopper or grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you’ll usually end up hand picking, or if time and energy is in short supply you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can, of course, be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too). Great, so you spend a lot of time and effort collecting up all these leaves. Then what? Don’t take them to the tip or make a bonfire: make leaf mould. It is as easy as anything and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…

All major credit cards accepted and then leave them be. If you can chop larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) up first, they’ll rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. It is worth avoiding very spiky leaves (the spines seem to withstand rotting and get you later!), and any that are very leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. If you want to speed the process up you can add a leaf mould

INTERVIEW

Hometown

Hometown burst onto the Irish music scene in 2014, scoring them two consecutive number ones in their homeland. Under the watchful eye of mentor Louis Walsh, they are set to become big on the other side of the Irish Sea. Lucy Ambache caught up with them on The Evening Breeze, and did her best to not come across as a concerned mum!

Brendan, you’re the shy one? Brendan: I can be. Cian, you’re the little cute one Cian: I’ll take that as a compliment Dayl is the pretty boy! Do you get the girls? Dayl: No! Dean. You’re the one that can dance. Dean: I can but I’m not the one you’re looking for. That’s Dayl – he’s really good. Josh. You’re the one who can sing. Josh: No I can’t <laughs> Ryan. You’re the clever one aren’t you. Ryan: You hit the nail on the head there. You redeemed yourself! <laughs>

surreal, meeting up with him and talking about the band – and the future plans. But you get used to it very quickly. What do your mums think? Are they worried about you being young and in showbiz? Dean: My mum’s glad to have me out of the house! Kian: Brendan’s dad called me about an hour ago, making sure he’s alright. Because Brendan broke his glasses and for some reason he feels the need to ring me to look after the situation! So do the girls love you? Dayl: They love Josh! Cian: They actually do Dayl: They love Josh. Dean loves them!

I feel like your mum. How old are you guys? 18, 19,20? What’s going on with the kids these days? Are they wearing tight trousers? Ryan: Yes. I usually wear the skinniest ones. Let’s talk about your debut UK single ‘Where I Belong’. It’s really nice. It’s a love song really. Dean: It was written by Kodaline and Jamie Scott. As soon as we heard it, we immediately fell in love with it and related to it in different ways. You are Louis Walsh’s band – he’s your manager. It must be pretty cool working with him? Six of you! This is a big band! 40

Dean: In the beginning it was
