The well known festivals are miles away, run for two or three days but many smaller festivals run locally, some are child friendly and are more affordable (plus you can come home to your own bed... I’m not fooled by the term “glamping” – there’s nothing glamorous about camping!).

Throughout this issue you’ll find the festivals highlighted within the What’s on pages; plus a full page (page 12) of other kinds of festivals such as the Art at the Heart in Southampton, Eastleigh Film Festival in September and although not until October I’d highly recommend getting tickets to see Austentatious at the Winchester Comedy Festival. I saw them at the Edinburgh Fringe – so funny and very clever - I’ve booked already (It’s cheaper to phone than book online by the way).

Have You Got The Baking Bug?

In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With new cakecraft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bake-offs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug.

Much of the renewed interest in what can be achieved with butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers taking part in progressively harder challenges over a period of ten weeks. The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today.

Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multi-layered framework

(a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake.

The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives.

These days you can buy special tin moulds for cupcakes and it’s possible to experiment with a huge range of recipes. Try them out on family and friends, or if you’re feeling ambitious you can even enter the National Cupcake Championships. You can view the entry guidelines at www. nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk but hurry, as the deadline for entries is 15th August.

7 Although many people enjoy pottering alone in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and finding original ways to decorate their cakes, The Great British Bake Off seems to have inspired a real enthusiasm for communal baking, whether that’s about learning together or indulging in friendly competition.

You can look up cake decorating courses in your local area by going to www. cakedecoratingcourses.co.uk or alternatively visit your local library to find out if they hold a list. If you fancy getting away from it all in order to really focus on your art, then there are a number of cake decorating short breaks and holidays available, with one day courses costing from around £100 (not including accommodation).

If you want a real holiday experience you could sign up for a cake-making course in France, with accommodation and meals included for £649 per person. See www. frenchcakebreaks.com for more details.

For those who simply don’t have the money to spend on courses there are a number of tutorials on YouTube (www.youtube. com) that will teach you everything you need to know, from creating a basic cake mixture to advanced piping techniques.

If you don’t enjoy learning alone, you can always invite a friend around to experiment with you, or get together with neighbours

to create your own version of the Great British Bake Off. One thing’s for certain: there’ll be no lack of volunteers to help when it comes to tasting the results!

Three’s a Crowd

by Jackie Brewster Gordon and Merle set off just after dawn. For two hours they navigated unfamiliar roads on their way to the airport, and the atmosphere became increasingly tense. Gordon refused to stop and ask for directions, and Merle lost confidence in her map reading after mistaking the motorway for a river.

They’d passed the same garage twice when Merle cried out, “I’ve just remembered something!”

“We did lock the front door”, Gordon said.

“Not that”. She opened the glove compartment and took out a black box.

“Mother lent me her sat nav. She said it would come in handy”.

Merle peered at the screen, “it says the destination is already set. How considerate of her”.

Gordon was suspicious; he’d never describe his mother-in-law as considerate.

With authority, a lady’s voice said, “turn around”.

“Better do as she says”. Merle laughed.

The holiday had been a last minute thing. Merle’s cousin had kindly offered them use of her two bedroom villa in Spain.

They’d found some cheap flights, although it meant a long drive to the airport. Gordon had grumbled about the cost of airport parking, but Gordon grumbled about the cost of everything.

They needed a break. For the last few weeks Merle’s mother, Connie, had been staying with them while the sale of her house went through. Gordon tolerated his mother-in-law in small doses.

What she’d promised to be a weekend stay had turned into four excruciatingly long weeks. Connie even had the nerve to hint that their villa was big enough for all three of them, especially as her new home was so close to the airport. Thankfully Gordon prided himself on being the sort of man who didn’t take hints.

For the next hour the sat nav lady took control of the situation. She had a condescending tone that reminded Gordon of Connie. It was uncomfortably like having her in the car with them, and his nerves were becoming increasingly frayed.

“Looks like we’ve hit rush hour”.

Merle worried, “I’d hoped we’d be there by now”.

Gordon sniped, “What does the sat nav say?” Merle checked the screen.

“She says, ‘arriving in five minutes’. There’s a left turn for the airport. Thank goodness”.

“Take the next right”, the sat nav ordered curtly.

“Perhaps she knows a short cut?”

Merle suggested nervously. Gordon frowned, and indicated right.

“That sign said Lockington”, Gordon said. “Isn’t that where Connie’s moved to?”

“Take the first left at the roundabout”. The sat nav continued. With a feeling of dread Gordon did as he was told. They passed a pub called The Brittle Sticks.

“That’s odd”, Merle said. “I’m sure Mother said her new local was called that”.

“Take the next left”, the sat nav ordered. Gordon grudgingly obeyed.

“You have arrived at your destination”, the sat nav declared.

They pulled up outside a bungalow with a ‘Sold’ sign on the drive. It was not the airport.

“Yoo hoo!” Connie waved opening the front door, “you’ve taken your time. Room for a little one?” She opened the car door and climbed inside.

“What a nice surprise”. Gordon said through gritted teeth.

“Don’t panic dear!” Connie laughed, “I’m only coming as far as the airport with you, then bringing your car back. I know how much Gordon hates paying for parking. Your car can have a free holiday on my drive.”

“You’re very considerate”, Gordon said.

“I am aren’t I?” Connie snapped on her seatbelt.

“Now, would you like me to give you directions?”

Brookfield students set to become Big Stars!

Fighting off 8,000 contestants across the UK to get down to the last 23, Amy Marsden and S-Jay from Locks Heath have earned their places in the Grand Final of national singing competition TeenStar.

This exciting talent competition for teens and pre-teens travels the UK in search of the best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists. Not only do these two youngsters share an amazing talent, they are also both year 7 students are Brookfield Community School and are both students of Vocademy Singing School. Also a talented songwriter, Amy Marsden wowed

the judges with her own original song “Enough Now”. S-Jay had to fight hard to win his place in the grand final on a wild card vote by promoting himself with local radio stations, local stores and Facebook. He busked for votes for 3 hours at Whiteley shopping centre where he blew the shoppers away with his amazing vocals.

The Joy of Camping

We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers, “Ecofriendly.” However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is.

First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs.

After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness. Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one.

What could be more relaxing than the peaceful sounds of the

countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farmmade yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies.

Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly.

The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a waterretaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come.

Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s all part of living among the

elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice!

The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and before you’re ready the last day arrives.

The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out. These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home.

Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year? Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?

Have a Healthy Holiday

By Alison Runham You’ve booked the perfect holiday in the ideal destination. In your dreams you’re already there, sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxing with a good book - but it could turn into a nightmare unless you ensure you’ve got your holiday health covered beforehand.

Holidaying in the UK If you’re holidaying in the UK, it’s easier; food, drink, transport and healthcare are all familiar and there’s no language barrier.

You should still arrange travel insurance though, in case an accident or illness means your holiday is cancelled or cut short.

If you’re planning to go way off the beaten track or hill climbing, check the weather forecast first.

Wear appropriate footwear and ensure you take your mobile (fully charged), warm waterproof clothing and a first aid kit.

Take a map too and make sure everyone knows the route (if only one person does, what happens if they’re injured and lose consciousness, or can’t walk?). Plan walks realistically as you’ll be slower over rough terrain.

These things

sound simple but many deaths are caused every year by ignoring these precautions.

Holidaying Abroad Read your guidebook and information from your travel company well in advance and visit http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before departure for specific precautions for your destination. Make sure you’re aware of: • Air travel health and safety Newborn babies and women over 36 weeks pregnant (32 weeks if it’s a multiple pregnancy) can’t travel by air, and it’s also not advised if you’ve had a recent stroke, heart attack, surgery or trauma, or if you have a communicable disease or certain conditions affecting your ears, chest, head or cardiovascular system.

Insurance can become void if you ignore advice about preexisting conditions or conceal them, so check with your doctor.

Inside aeroplanes the air is very dry. Stay well hydrated

and avoid alcohol, as this will dehydrate you and altitude increases its effects. Ask your doctor’s advice if you are concerned about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or if you’ve given birth in the last two months. The risk of DVT can be reduced by walking, stretching, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and keeping well hydrated.

Compression stockings may also help if fitted and worn correctly.

• Local laws and customs Beware different traffic signals and different laws particularly about standards of dress.

• Food and water safety Always wash your hands before and after using the toilet or handling food, and pack sanitizer gel or wipes in case hand-washing facilities are unclean or non-existent.

If you’re not sure the water is safe, don’t drink it or use it for brushing teeth unless it’s boiled or treated with purification tablets – otherwise stick to bottled water. Avoid ice cubes too.

Choose well-cooked, freshly prepared food where you can (especially if buying from street vendors), and avoid salads, shellfish and ice-cream (unless it’s from a large commercial manufacturer). Thoroughly clean or peel fruit and vegetables.

19 • Health precautions Depending on where you’re going, there may be a risk of malaria and it shouldn’t be taken lightly; it can be fatal.

Use repellents on exposed skin and repellents and/or insecticides around your room and on mosquito screens and your clothing, as mosquitoes may bite through it. Wear long trousers or long-sleeved tops, particularly after dark.

Anti-malarial tablets need to be started before you go and must be continued (sometimes for up to 4 weeks) when you return.

Pack a supply of diarrhoea medication so it’s close by if needed.

• Vaccinations Again, requirements depend on destination; check http:// www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk at least 8 weeks before travel to find specific guidelines for

the country you’re visiting as some vaccines are given in several doses, and factor in other countries you may plan to visit on holiday. Carry proof of vaccinations – some countries will require an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio) should all be free, but you’ll have to pay for yellow fever, encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, tuberculosis and hepatitis B (unless it’s given as a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine).

• Rules about prescribed medication Always take a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s

letter too, including your personal details, travel dates and details of medication you’re carrying.

• Your healthcare entitlements If you’re travelling to Switzerland or a country that’s part of the European Economic Area (EEA), apply for an EHIC (European Health Insurance) card which entitles you to healthcare equivalent to that provided for residents. Outside the EEA, medical care is usually dependent upon your insurance.

• Sun Protection Most people still aren’t careful enough about this. In hot sunny climates wear a hat and sunglasses, avoid midday sun, stay hydrated and apply high factor sun lotion regularly.
