Jack Of All Trades

Melanie Tinson & Tania Houston

I started my first local magazine like this one, in Chandlers Ford back in 2004. Like many small businesses starting out, I couldn’t afford staff so I was a Jack-of-all-trades, one-woman industry. I still had small children at home then, so in addition to running the family, I had to quickly become competent in advert design, article writing, selling, accounts and I even carried out the physical door to door distribution myself. And yes sometimes I’d be doing two or three of those things at once e.g. child in a pushchair while I did deliveries. It didn’t take long before I outsourced the things that took me too much time or that I wasn’t very good at. Deliveries door-to-door was first to go and now we do everything either with our wonderful team of helpers, or using RoyalMail for the more rural areas. Advert and magazine design followed shortly afterwards - creativity just isn’t me – and as a result the business flourished. This was a valuable lesson and at home we make an effort to recognise each family member’s strengths and weaknesses, and ensure that responsibility for elements of running the house goes to those best at the job. It still leaves gaps though. There are some jobs we are all rubbish at, or even if capable, none of us want to do it (meaning it doesn’t get done). Then of course there are the jobs for which you don’t have the correct tools. We’ve never cleaned or laid a carpet, tried to fix our own appliances, done anything that involves plumbing or electrical or serviced our own cars. And it’s no coincidence that you can find professionals to do all of these jobs – and more - in this magazine!

Pixie Lott To Star In Truman Capote’s Breakfast At Tiffany’s 25th - 30th April, Mayflower Theatre Box Office: 02380 711811 www.mayflower.org.uk The first UK and Ireland tour of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the classic tale of Holly Golightly written by Truman Capote and brought to life so memorably by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film, will be coming to Mayflower Theatre as part of a UK tour and prior to a West End run. The novella has been adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize-winning Finalist and Tony and Olivier Awardwinning playwright Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out, Three Days of Rain), and contains memorable songs from the era as well as original music by Grant Olding (One Man, Two Guvnors). Pixie Lott will star as Holly Golightly. “The goal of this version is to return to the original setting of the novella, which is the New York of the Second World War, as well as to resume its tone – still stylish and romantic, yes, but rougher-edged and more candid than people generally

remember,” Richard Greenberg explained. “Capote was a great writer and a natural maker of plots and Breakfast at Tiffany’s has a drive that makes it very alluring to dramatise.” Breakfast at Tiffany’s will be directed by Nikolai Foster, the Artistic Director of Curve Leicester, as part of his inaugural season for the company, with production design by Matthew Wright (La Cage Aux Folles). Pixie Lott said, “I am so excited to play Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s on tour and in my first West End play. I absolutely love her style, and free spirit; she has always been an icon to me and I can’t wait to bring my own personality to the role. Alongside music, I’ve always wanted to be in a play, and getting the opportunity to be in one of my all-time favourites and play this fabulous character is a dream come true.”

GARDENING

Vertical Cover With Climbers by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com Blue Clematis

Take a look at the boundaries of your garden; are they rather uninteresting, drab or perhaps even downright boring? It is time to start thinking about doing some vertical gardening - don’t just concentrate on beds, borders and beautiful containers, but think about all those upright surfaces just itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs. If you have several vertical surfaces then so much the better.

A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by taking a look at the surface you have to offer, get a rough idea of the size of the area to be covered, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Check your soil type too – discover whether it is sandy and free-draining, sticky and full of clay or somewhere in between as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and then go from strength to strength as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Don’t forget that most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which you can grow your climbers. If you have a long stretch of wall you can break up its monotony by planting up with several

10

different plants. If you grow a wide range of plants and only allow them to reach the height of the first floor, it will make a tall, narrow building seem somewhat broader. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or self-clinging plants such as ivies are ideal for this situation, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground, as they tend to have sizeable root systems. However, you can grow them in containers if you get really stuck, but make sure that you re-pot regularly and that you have enough space to ultimately use a really good sized container such as a half barrel. You will need to use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit to ensure that the compost continues to drain freely. It is also essential to place a really deep layer of crocks at the base of the container so that the drainage holes are loosely covered and will not become clogged by the compost. I always add some controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, as this will help to ensure that plants get

adequately fed at least for the first few months. If you plant the container up using a triangular or V-shaped trellis panel inserted at the back surface, this will give the plant an initial support and it can then climb up this before moving on to your wall or fence. You will, of course, need to tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. Once you have decided where to plant the climber, dig a really good sized planting hole, making sure that it is at least 18 inches (45 cm) away from the wall or fence. This may sound like a long way, but it ensures that the plant receives adequate moisture and does not suffer any adverse effects from the proximity of the nearby wall. Incorporate plenty of planting compost, well rotted manure or garden compost,

and then once you have soaked the root ball of the plant you can place it in the hole. Ideally you should position it at a 45 degree angle, so that it is already leaning towards the wall. Once you have checked that the levels are right you can spread the root system out and plant in the normal way. If your climber is already attached to some sort of support system, such as bamboo canes, it helps if you gently untie the stems from any central stake and then choose the best looking shoots and train these towards your new support system. You can use the existing bamboo canes to help it on its way. It is essential to keep climbers really well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants available, but here are some suggestions for

INTERVIEW

Duran Duran Duran Duran returned to the music scene in 2015, with the single ‘Pressure Off’ and the album ‘Paper Gods’. The Evening Breeze’s Lucy Ambache caught up with bassist John Taylor and talked collaborations, mature touring and Glastonbury. I hear you’re a fan of The Breeze? I have found myself listening a lot and you guys are almost always playing something I like listening to. Well this interview is going to go very well! <laughs> We have been loving playing ‘Pressure Off’. I watched the behind the scenes video and it’s great to see the musical brilliance of Duran Duran, Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers working together. It really is quite something! Yeah. We worked a lot with Nile in the eighties and it wasn’t until working with him on this song that we really appreciated what he brings to the room – and as a bass player, you just don’t get to play with musicians like him that often. And Mark’s a very different kind of guy – he’s like watching all the time. It was a great experience and nice to have something on the album that married the old eighties sounding Duran with the 14

contemporary Duran. It’s sort of been updated into 2015 on the album. That’s the job. You can’t just throw the baby out. You’ve got to hold onto the classic aspects but you’ve got to let in enough new energy so it sounds fresh and interesting. Otherwise you’ll just be preaching to the converted. With every album you do, you’ve got the opportunity to open things out a little bit. What ended up defining this album was the amount of featured artists we’ve got on it. And that’s not usual for you? Not at all. We like to think of ourselves as a closed shop – that’s what bands do - “we’re a gang, we’re all inclusive”. You look at the culture and what’s going on in music over the last few years and it’s all about features. You’ve got EDM and hip hop and they’re all about features. By the end of this album, we’d have anybody on it! Anybody. Come! Come! Play on our record! So you’re taking this album out on the road. Are you still up for this? Are you ready to tour? After spending two years in the studio, we’re like “get us on tour!”. You’ve got these two different experiences that make up doing what we do. There’s the introspective studio work where it’s like a ‘man cave’ and the touring balances it out. I wouldn’t want to only be a

touring musician but I wouldn’t just want to be a studio musician either. Is it going to be a bit more different for you guys? A bit more civilised? We’re very civilised! I know what you’re getting at though. You just don’t have the energy to party like you used to. Now the energy just goes into making the show as great as it can be. We’re very relaxed professionals and when you’re married and you’ve got families, it’s not like it was when you were in your twenties. But I would hope so too! I wouldn’t want to be me now doing what I was doing then – it would be pretty sad. We’ll see you at Glastonbury 2016, right? It’s got to be, right? On the main stage! That would be good wouldn’t it? Why has this not happened? I don’t know. I’ve never had the opportunity to do the ‘hard sell’ but I’m sure one day we’ll get there. I’d better get down there and do the shmooze!

“Our shops have become a very successful income stream for us” said Oakhaven’s Head of Fundraising & Communications Mike Denny. “They are all well-presented and run by an enthusiastic team of Managers and Volunteers and we continue to be very grateful to our local community for not just shopping with us but for the many wonderful donations of clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac we receive daily. We simply couldn’t do it without them”

The new shop will bring Oakhaven’s total of shops up to six. Mrs Newton went on to say: “donations of good quality used furniture will be welcome and in addition we will now be able to offer a house clearance service too now we have our new shop opening. Enquires about either furniture donations or house clearances can be made direct to me on the above number”

“Our existing furniture shop in Highcliffe has really carved a niche for itself” said Oakhaven’s Retail Manager Ann Newton. “And we expect our new furniture shop to do the same on the other side of our catchment area. It is nicely positioned with plenty of easy, free parking right outside the door. We are currently looking for local volunteers to help in the shop and anyone interested should contact either myself or our Volunteer Services Co-ordinator Clare Celea on 01590 646447 or me on 646442”

BEAUTY

Gifts for Mother’s Day By Kate Duggan Treat mum this Mother’s Day, with a luxurious beauty gift that she’d probably never dream of buying for herself. Clarins’ makeup palettes are some of the best on the market in my opinion, and their latest offering is no exception. The Natural Glow Eye Shadow Palette, £33, features five very wearable shades, from light beige to warm brown, all housed in an attractive rose-gold coloured compact. They’re easy to apply, and the palette is perfect for keeping in a handbag to transform a natural day time look into night time glam. Get it quick though; it’s a limited edition, and if previous incarnations are anything to go by, it’s likely to sell out pretty fast. If you’re looking to earn some serious brownie points, perfume is the way to go. Connock London‘s Kukui is brimming with floral notes, including gardenia, Moroccan rose, white 24

jasmine and calla lily, but it’s given a grown-up, oriental twist with notes of sandalwood, vetiver, white amber and warm vanilla. The result is a truly gorgeous fragrance, and the bottle looks rather lovely sat out on display as well. There’s a very good chance this could become her new favourite scent. At £75 for 100ml, it’s not cheap, but consider it part-payment for all that teenage angst she had to deal with. Buying a treat for a mum-to-be? Neal’s Yard Remedies Mothers range has been specially formulated to nurture women during pregnancy. The range includes a balm, massage oil and bath oil. The balm and massage oil can help to prevent stretch marks, while the bath oil aids relaxation and a restful night’s sleep, as well as softening skin. (It also smells rather lovely too.) Prices start from £15, so the range is great value, as a little goes a long way and each bottle is packed with high quality, natural ingredients, such as lavender oil, neroli and mandarin essential oils.

The Eco Chic Body Lotion and Shower Gel gift set by Green Energy Organics is ideal if you’re on a budget this Mother’s Day. Priced at £14.95, this is luxury on a shoestring. Not only are the shower gel and lotion packed with skin friendly oils, such as avocado and jojoba, but they smell divine, with notes of blackcurrant, rose, myrrh, jasmine, tonka bean, vanilla, and white musk. They’re also very gentle, as they don’t contain any dyes, sodium lauryl sulphate or parabens. Available from millabaci.com Dashing out last minute to buy a gift? Head to Marks and Spencer and check out their Pure Relaxing range. Team the body wash, body lotion and hand & nail cream with either the candle or diffuser to create an at-home spa experience. Products are scented with lavender, geranium and other oils to help mum relax, unwind and de-stress. Throw in a glass of prosecco and some music, and there’s little doubt you’ll be seen as the favourite child. Prices start from £6.

Fostering, Making The Right Choice For You You’ve decided to discover more about the rewards of fostering, so here are few guidelines to help you. FOSTERING AGENCIES There are different types of fostering providers, including private companies, charities and local authorities. All will appear similar so look closely at each offering. APPLICATION PROCESS Your initial enquiry should be responded to swiftly and an appointment arranged to visit you at your home. During the visit they should explain in detail about the challenges and rewards of fostering, the application and assessment process, and answer all your questions. You’re going to be looking after vulnerable children so it’s important that all the necessary checks are completed. This is a detailed process and usually takes about 6-8 months, however some agencies take less time. Consider the values and ethics of the provider and the culture they promote. TRAINING YOU Every agency will provide basic training in fostering, but consider those that go further 26

by encouraging and helping you develop a career path in fostering. Ensure that all the training offered is fully funded by them, that you receive independently accredited qualifications and they have the professional expertise to ensure you acquire the skills, confidence and understanding to make a difference to the lives of the children you foster. SUPPORTING YOU The support you receive is crucial to a successful outcome for both you and the children you foster. Your social worker should know and understand you, and have time for you and your foster child so they are able to deal with any concerns you may have. Social workers in some providers look after only 10

families while others have case loads of up to 30. Lower case numbers ensures more time and personal support is available to devote to you and your foster child. A CAREER FOR YOU Fostering is a professional career and you should be encouraged to improve your skill levels, as the better qualified you are the better rewarded you will be, both emotionally and financially. Consider those agencies that value their carers and go that step further; paying a little more, providing fully funded in house training, having more time to support their carers and providing the additional resources to ensure you have a rewarding career.

RECIPE

Chicken In Red Wine Serves 4

This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one! Ingredients:

1.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon.

2.

Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf.

3.

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender.

4.

Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 225g button mushrooms • 200g shallots, peeled • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 300ml red wine • 200ml chicken or vegetable stock • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 1 bay leaf • 2tbsp cornflour • Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish • Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve

Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Justin Friel feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Waterside & New Forest areas and Justin is finding that his approach

is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Justin a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Top Tyre Care Tips Iain Betson goes tyre kicking Having just forked out £450 for three tyres on the car - no it’s not a Reliant Robin; fate being what it is I fully expect the fourth one to go pop in the near future - right now I am in a zone of “tyre care awareness”. Sad I know, but if it saves me having to replace tyres on a regular basis then so be it. So here are some nuggets of tyre wisdom I’ve learnt and pass to you: 1. Use the correct pressures, and change them depending upon your load (increase for heavy use, reduce for everyday journeys). Doing this will improve stability, save fuel and prolong the tyre’s life. 2. Tread wear: check the tread wear indicators – raised areas at the base of the grooves of the tread. If the tread is level with

At DixeyClean we specialise in cleaning home exteriors to restore and protect. We professionally clean, treat and then seal roofs and driveways ensuring they remain looking their best for years to come.

the indicator you have only 1.6mm of tread left. Under that and it’s a fine and three points per illegal tyre. 3. Putting nitrogen instead of air in the tyre increases its life and saves fuel as it lessens the rolling resistance by dispersing heat more effectively. 4. Avoid those kerbs: hitting them will damage the tyre side wall, with a cut or bulge raising the risk of a blowout. 5. Potholes: do your best to avoid them safely. Hitting these will damage the tyre and, quite possibly, the wheel too, especially if you have “run-flat” tyres as they have very little give in the sidewall, meaning the wheel takes more punishment. A replacement wheel is a lot more expensive than a tyre. 6. If your car has traction control, changing just one tyre can make the system behave oddly as it receives conflicting information from the different tread depths, and thus grip, on the tyres. In some cases it will even inhibit the car’s performance as it attempts to keep the car safe from what it perceives is a dangerous condition.

MOTORING

Best Small Cars by Rebecca Chaplin

VW Polo

If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites.

Ford Fiesta - Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a well-laid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification.

VW Polo - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-to-last materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s wellrespected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment.

Honda Jazz - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out.

Dacia Sandero - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.

Vauxhall Corsa - Price: From £8,995 The Corsa is soon to be replaced by an all-new model which means there are bargains to be had on the current model. A firm favourite with new drivers and pensioners alike, the Corsa might play second fiddle to Ford’s Fiesta in the sales charts, but it’s still worth a look. It’s stylish, has an impressive array of engines to pick from and is packed with plenty of features too. 36
