I read a book while I was on holiday this summer called The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. Tania Houston The author acknowledged that she was far from unhappy, but felt she wasn’t appreciating her life and there was more she could do. As I came towards the end of the book I realised that a lot of what made the author happy was being in control and organised. When she remembered friend’s birthdays , or stopped eating junk food, or bit her tongue rather than criticising, it felt good. Decluttering was another big plus on the happiness scale and I can definitely relate to that. I would love to be naturally tidy; I’d love to be a concert pianist too, but I’m neither nor will I ever be. However I really don’t like mess so it’s a constant work in progress. I did clear my office during the summer (both Melanie and I work from our respective homes) and have since tried to be disciplined about ensuring my desk is clear at the end of each working day. It feels good to walk DO YOU USE A SMART PHONE? in to a tidy room each To save our contact details morning. direct to your smart phone, use

The dripping tap, the tree that’s grown too big, the scuff on the car and the boiler that needs servicing to name but a few. And somehow once you’ve fixed the little jobs it inspires you to plan bigger things – it sort of clears your mind.
During this process I was reminded by one of our advertisers how busy they get in the run up to Christmas. If you want work done before the 25th December, you need to book it now!

Clues You’re Not Really Over Your Ex Health
Life LIst Neil Sedaka was right about the difficulties of breaking up, but sometimes that’s only the beginning...
You rush out of a department store, in floods of tears, because someone is wearing a similar shirt, skirt, scent, pair of shoes or face (and, by similar, it’s the same ratio of eyes, nose and mouth) to your ex. You keep their old messages on your mobile, including those that say, “never call me again or it’ll be a police matter” – these you refer to privately as ‘the treasures’.
You still write to their relatives, friends, and neighbours, hoping someone will invite you round to visit, once the restraining order has expired. You’ve bought the same pet and given it the same name. That way you’re covered when

Aston Martin Rapide S What is it?
Meet Aston Martin’s slightly awkward-looking four-door saloon, but now with added adrenaline. Not that the standard car really needed an additional dose of go-go juice, but that’s never stopped the Gaydon massive from administering aid before. As part of a mid-life refresh the S has more power and even more refinement, and is the only model in the maker’s range that comes with two rear seats. What’s under the bonnet? An almighty lump, that’s what. The ageing 6.0-litre V12 is still in situ – a last hurrah before AMG work their black magic under the hoods of Britain’s finest – but for now it has even more grunt. Power is up 80bhp to 550bhp and this helps the 60mph dash time tumble under that all-important five second barrier, but only by a tenth of a second. Top speed is a heady 190mph and with those sorts of figures fuel economy and emissions suffer. The former is a rather woeful 19.9mpg and CO2 is puffed out at a rate of 332g/km.
What’s the spec like?
In a word: glorious. The leather is soft, the carpets thick and the wood burnished. Several
cows were sacrificed to coat most surfaces inside and the instruments are as beautiful as one of the finest Swiss watches. Standard kit includes Bluetooth, sat nav, front and rear parking sensors (you need them, this thing is Ark Royal long), tracking device and a stunning 1000W Bang & Olufsen stereo. Some of the controls are a little small and fiddly, particularly the buttons in the centre console. Those rear seats have the option of TV screens (£2,495) and you can go mad on the other options too. Even the paint of our test car was an additional £3,495, but it’s worth it for the name alone: Skyfall Silver.
the butterflies in the exhaust containing the cacophony of noise open, releasing a guttural V12 groan. The rear seats are comfy too, even for adults, but that said, headroom can be a little cramped.
Price: £165,580 (as tested) Engine: 6.0-litre, V12, petrol Power: 550bhp 620NM Max speed: 190mph 0-62mph: 4.9 seconds MPG: 19.9mpg (combined) Emissions: 332g/km CO2
A few. The biggest is the Porsche Panamera. An ugly car from some angles, stunning from others, it’s a super-sized sports car that’s superb to drive, especially in GTS form. The new Mercedes S-Class will be a potent rival too as will Audi’s luxurious A8. Even BMW’s 7 Series will have a sniff in this category, where price matters far less than the badge that’s on the bonnet.
What’s it like to drive?
It’s not the most dynamic of Aston Martin’s range, that’s for sure, but this is a GT car to transport you and the family with ease. It’s relaxed and sedate when you want it to be, but can still pick up its skirt and go when you put your foot down. As the revs rise
The Aston Martin Rapide S is a stunning way to travel. It’s luxurious, looks sharp and is caked in cool. You can’t drive an Aston anywhere without gaining nods of appreciation and that very rarely happens in ostentatious equivalents from the likes of Ferrari or Lamborghini. There’s a certain respect for Aston Martin, and I like that. The Rapide S is a big car – and it feels it on the road – and that engine really is starting to feel dated in terms of economy, but the power is impressive and if you need those extra rear seats it’s worth considering… if you have the cash, of course. How To Make An Extra £100 A Week From Home Stuck at home and need to make some extra cash? There are lots of ways you can do it. Here are just a few of them. Be a Virtual Assistant A Virtual Assistant (VA) is someone who works as a secretary outside the office from their computer at home. It can involve a wide range of tasks, from simply answering phones and sending emails to bookkeeping, business planning, desktop publishing and even event management. The more specialised your skills are, the more you’ll be able to charge. To be a successful VA, you’ll definitely need to be computersavvy and have experience of admin work already. It’s also helpful to join the Society of Virtual Assistants (http://www. societyofvirtualassistants.co.uk/) which runs courses and offers support to VAs of all levels. You can make good money as a VA. Agencies like VA4U.com charge up to £150 per client per day, but typically you would charge between £15 – £25 per 12
hour for routine admin work done by phone or email.
Giving your opinions Make £50-100 a time in cash for giving your opinions in focus groups. Companies like Sarosresearch.com need people of all ages and in various parts of the country to join a focus group every now and then to give opinions on anything from shampoo to high-end cars. There’s free food and drink too. If you have the time and don’t mind answering questions you could do online surveys. The work is fairly sporadic but it requires minimal effort and you have nothing to lose, not to mention the fact that it’s all done from the comfort of your own home. You can earn up to £50 a month if you are willing to put in the hours. Websites such as www. opinionoutpost.co.uk, www. uk.mysurvey.co.uk and www. valuedopinions.co.uk offer free paid surveys (N.B. you should never be asked to pay to join up or hand over your credit card details).
A good tip would be to set up a separate email account just for this type of job so your personal one doesn’t become flooded with spam. Then there are online competitions. For example, Freepostcodelottery.com is free to enter and gives away £20 every day at noon to one of the postcodes on their list. There’s no catch, but you will have to check each day to see if your number has come up. Check our competitions page on Moneymagpie.com for the latest competitions online.
Set up an online buying and selling business Do you collect dolls or electronic gadgets or some other low-priced collectible? If you’re a little knowledgeable about a particular niche area you could make money by buying and selling items online. Pick a narrow product area (such as Cindy dolls or NatWest piggy banks or Beano comics) that you are knowledgeable about and then scour car boot sales, charity shops and jumble sales for cheap
items that you could sell for a profit. Then set up a seller’s account on eBay or eBid and start selling. Make sure you keep a squeakyclean rating as buyers are much more likely to buy from you if you have 100% approval. Always send items on time and package them up nicely to make it look professional. Of course you can make money online purely by selling your junk on a regular basis. It can become second-nature and an easy way to bring some cash in each week. In fact, once you are used to that you can sell on behalf of other people. Take in their items and sell them online taking a 30% cut of the profit (once you have taken out your advertising, postage and packing costs).
Propagate seedlings If you have green fingers and a decent-sized greenhouse (or somewhere else to place plant pots) you could make around £600 a week between February and October by propagating seedlings. Grow plants that you then sell at car boot sales and at local garages and shops or to friends and neighbours. To make a profit you need to choose carefully the type of plants you are going to grow. Some seeds cost £2.99 for six and some cost £2.99 for
1,500. You do the maths. Also, if you’re going to grow a lot of plants you will need a lot of pots. Try to do a deal with your local garden centre to buy the pots that they would usually throw away for a discounted price. Also go online and bulkbuy compost to cut your costs there.
FUN FACT: More than two thirds of people in the UK have sold something secondhand. The average amount raised per person in the last 12 months is £106.15. CDs and DVDs are the most popular second-hand item, followed by books and clothes. By Jasmine Birtles, Moneymagpie.com

Your Legal Options For Divorce Q: Last year, my husband left
me and our three children. We have now begun divorce proceedings, but I have not worked in several years, will have primary care of the children (the eldest is 14 years old) and am very worried about my financial situation. What are my rights? Susan, Eastleigh
Susan, the first thing I want to make clear to try and calm your anxieties and fears is that the purpose of any process of divorce is to try to make adequate provision for all parties involved, particularly children and, wherever possible, maintain the standard of living a family enjoyed when they were all together. However there are now two households, not one. Firstly, you need to consult a specialist Family Solicitor. The
main job of your Solicitor will be to assess and value (if possible), all the assets that you and your husband have available to you. This will include your home, cars and any valuable furniture, financial assets such as pensions, shares and investments and other items such as any holiday homes, additional properties or equity in a business. The income from all sources will be taken into account, including recent increases in salary and the likelihood of promotion or increments in the future. The availability of appropriate State Benefits such as Child and Working Tax Credits and possibly Housing Benefit will also be considered. Of course any debt, including mortgages, personal or business loans, overdrafts and credit cards will be considered. Your respective outgoings for new and possible new properties will be considered, so that you can both see how much you will need to live on in the future. If you have not worked for the majority of your married life due to your family commitments, your Solicitor will ensure that any resolution is based on a realistic expectation of your future earning potential. Your husband has an obligation to maintain both you and the children, so far as he is reasonably able. If he fails to meet his commitments, then there are remedies available to
you through the Court. If your husband intends to maintain his relationship with and share care of the children, his future accommodation needs will also be considered, but if you are to be the primary carer of the children, the need to provide a home for you and the children will be a priority and assets will be distributed to ensure that the children have a home, so far as is possible. There are many factors that the Courts consider when reaching a decision on the division of capital and income. Specialist legal advice is always appropriate, but the system presently requires that you attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, to ensure that you consider all options of settlement (including Mediation, a private and confidential dispute resolution process in which an independent neutral person, the Mediator, is appointed to support both parties in reaching an amicable settlement before Court proceedings are commenced, which can be very expensive and time consuming. During the Mediation process, my advice is that you continue to consult a Solicitor who can help and guide you through the difficult process, to ensure that you do not reach agreements that are either impractical or inappropriate. by Catherine Maxfield

November’s Big Bang Fireworks Night This year’s Bonfire Night will see Britain’s population stocking up on pyrotechnics and hoping for a starry night into which they will launch their rockets and colourful array of exploding projectiles. Indeed, the popularity of fireworks never seems to wane, and despite the ubiquitous nature of this form of entertainment, it’s an occasion that never fails to impress. And Guy Fawkes’ commemoration by no means holds a monopoly on the format. An increasing number of dates outside the 5th of November fill Britain’s calendar with spectacular displays at many events: New Year’s Eve, Cowes Week, pop festivals, Halloween, Midsummer, and Blackheath Fireworks to name just a few. People from all backgrounds, old and young, come together to marvel at the displays and join in the chorus of ooohs and aaahs. It’s an age-old, simple pleasure that makes no distinction between culture, politics, or language. Quite simply, fireworks are just fun to watch.
Britain’s Pyrotechnic History As an English Catholic, Guy Fawkes’ gunpowder plot of 1605 was born of a desire to rid Parliament of Protestant King 24
James I and replace him with third in line, Princess Elizabeth. Gunpowder was placed in a room (an ‘undercroft’) beneath the House of Lords as part of an audacious plan hatched by Fawkes and his fellow Catholic conspirators. News of the plan, however, was leaked to King James who ordered a search of the underground cellars where Fawkes was seen leaving and promptly arrested. After some unsavoury interrogation and torture, it appears that Fawkes confessed to the crime and was banished to be hung, drawn and quartered. Not keen on facing the gallows, he leapt from the supporting scaffolding and met his end by way of a broken neck. Thus, the tale of conspiracy from 1605 became folklore in Britain and spawned generations who collected wood for bonfires and roamed from house-to-house seeking ‘a penny for the guy’, after which the effigy was placed on the blaze to meet its doom. Some of these traditions remain, but the modern commemoration is a more commercial operation with safety and litigation as primary concerns, alongside enjoyment of the events. Some consider this
the ‘nanny state’ at work, but the accident rate suggests otherwise, with hundreds of injuries reported every year despite government warnings and media campaigns. Notwithstanding this gloomy state of affairs, surfing the Internet reveals some fascinating information on the subject of fireworks as well as the do’s and don’ts of safety. The website Bonfire Night Safety, for example, states that in a recent year there were 990 injuries caused by fireworks in October and November, and alarmingly, that 285 of them were eye injuries. There are also some interesting snippets on the site; prior to 1959, it was illegal not to celebrate bonfire night in the UK and apparently, some fireworks can travel up to speeds of 150 mph. So, if that empty bottle in which you hope to plant your biggest rocket happens to topple over, that’s the speed it will be racing towards your neighbour’s fence, or worse, towards those standing nearby. Despite the hazards of pyrotechnics, a few precautions will see you enjoying the action in safety. There is plenty of information online and from
local authorities to make for a safe and enjoyable night, so be sure to seek it out before lighting the touch paper or joining an organised event.
The Business of Pyrotechnics The history of fireworks dates back to China in the 7th century where displays accompanied festivities, a trend that spread to many other cultures around the world. The popularity of these displays created a firework manufacturing industry and the much-respected profession of the pyrotechnician. It seems, however, that the mainstay of the industry is harking back to its Chinese roots. The business in Britain is now modest, only numbering around 40 companies, which employ a few hundred people fulltime, although this number rises
to around 4,000 during busy periods. Britain’s manufacturing side, however, is suffering since the majority of fireworks are now made in China and imported. The squeeze on materials and labour costs, plus fierce competition in the business, has caused the UK’s industry to downsize and concentrate on specialist markets and displays, rather than manufacture. There are also concerns that the standard of products coming into the country from China and the Far East might be dropping, and will have an adverse bearing on safety. Despite these concerns, our love affair with the spectacle continues. And for Britain, Guy Fawkes Night provides enough history and national enthusiasm to step out into the cold November air to indulge just one more time. By James Smith

Christmas is an occasion of joy where we celebrate the birth of a baby to a young girl and her partner. A baby that, despite humble beginnings, would have an immense impact on the world. We seem to be taken over by the American tradition of wishing ‘Happy Holidays’. We have a holiday, whether a few days off or week(s) because of the festival of Christmas. Let’s not ignore that fact. Let’s remember the impact of that baby on the world and how it continues to do so. God sent Jesus as a sign of his love. If nothing else, let us remember to love this Christmas, whether we belong to a religion, have a faith or not. Let us pray for love and peace in the world and that there will be people who are able to bring love and peace to places and people where there is none. There are a number of services across Chandler’s Ford that will provide something for everyone; visit the Churches Together website for details; www. ctcf.org.uk. Join us as we celebrate the birth of the Christ-child and the immense impact he has had and continues to have. The Churches of Chandler’s Ford wish you a blessed, peaceful and Happy Christmas. 32

Fighting the Flu and Combating Colds Your throat is sore, you can’t breathe through your nose and the only thing you want to do is watch TV all day under a duvet. But is it a cold or the flu? It can be difficult to tell them apart. Both can cause runny or blocked noses, sore throats and coughs. But there are some differences. A cold: • Symptoms come on gradually • You feel worse on days 1-2, and usually better in a week • It doesn’t often cause a temperature; if it does, it will usually be brief and mild (not above 38°C) • Your nose tends to be painful, irritated and red • You will feel unwell, but not overwhelmingly tired or incapable of doing anything • Sometimes you may also suffer from eye irritation, ear pressure or earache, mild headache and mild muscle pain.
The flu: • Symptoms come on very rapidly • You usually feel worse 2 or 3 days in, rather than at the start, but improve after 5 or 6 days • You may have a high temperature - 38°C or above which comes on suddenly and 36
By Alison Runham
can make you sweat, or give you ‘the chills’ • Your cough tends to be dry and chesty, and can be severe • Headaches are very common; muscles and joints may ache badly • You may develop diarrhoea • You may have difficulty sleeping, although you feel very tired and only want to lie down. Whichever is the culprit, both are highly contagious infections caused by viruses and there are only two ways to combat them: 1) avoid contact with them 2) boost your immune system to fight them off and reduce symptoms.
Avoiding Contact Think how many surfaces you touch; door handles, stair rails, taps, keypads when we enter our PIN. Now consider how many people have touched them before you. • Clean high-contact surfaces regularly and thoroughly; don’t forget telephones and door handles • Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly, especially after touching your nose or mouth • Don’t share cutlery or cups • Cold and flu sufferers need their own hand towel or disposable paper towels • Make sure they have tissues close by too. Coughing or
sneezing into a tissue (and throwing it away immediately) prevents virus-laden droplets escaping into the air.
Boosting your immune system If you have a medical condition which can make flu more serious, or are over 65, pregnant or a carer, you should be offered the flu vaccine every autumn. Whilst it won’t guarantee that you won’t develop flu (new strains often appear), the chances are greatly reduced. There are also many foods and supplements that claim to help. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): There is no evidence that it prevents colds; but a regular daily dose may reduce how long your infection lasts and the severity of your symptoms. Zinc: Zinc appears to lessen symptoms and speed up recovery, if taken from the start; it’s not clear how as yet, but it may prevent formation of proteins that allow cold viruses to reproduce. Sources: wheat germ, eggs, seafood. Garlic: Ingesting garlic regularly seems to boost your immune system, but only one study has shown it prevents a cold or flu; once you’re infected, there’s no proof garlic helps. Leave for 20 minutes after peeling and chopping to activate its immune boosting enzymes.
Echinacea: A variety of preparations have been trialled with differing results. Some trials show that Echinacea takers are 30% less likely to develop a cold but there’s little evidence it helps once you’re ill. Glutathione and bioflavonoid: These help to maintain a healthy immune system, although there’s no cold or flu fighting evidence yet. Glutathione sources: watermelon, broccoli, cabbage. Bioflavonoid sources: cherries, green peppers, red onions. Selenium: Low levels of selenium have been linked to developing more severe flu, so maintain healthy levels. Sources: fish, nuts, mushrooms. Saline (salt water): Saline drops and sprays can reduce congestion and remove virus and bacteria particles. Chicken Soup: Chicken has anti-inflammatory properties, so
it really can help, and you can add other immunity-boosting ingredients too. Hot Toddy: Hot drinks with honey, lemon and a small measure of whisky can ease congestion, soothe the throat and help you sleep. Remember however that too much alcohol affects immunity.
Cold and Flu Myths • The flu jab gives you flu False. Inactive viruses are used in the vaccine, but you may have a temperature and ache for a short time afterwards. • Being cold or wet gives you a cold/flu False. But if you’re already carrying a virus, it might allow it to develop.
Do I need to see my GP? Usually, over the counter painkillers and decongestants plus plenty of rest and fluids will be all you need, and steam inhalation can ease congestion. But do see your GP if: • Your symptoms last more than a week, or become much worse: very high temperature, severe headache, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or chest pain • You develop symptoms not typical of flu, such as a rash • You have a medical condition that is making your flu worse.
• Antibiotics cure colds and flu False. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses.

Clues You’re Not Really Over Your Ex Neil Sedaka was right about the difficulties of breaking up, but sometimes that’s only the beginning... That way you’re covered when theirs mysteriously disappears. You have a recent photo of them that you’ve blown up and stapled to a pillow. Through the forehead. You’ve taken out a subscription to Expert Stalker magazine, which is why you know their route to work and all the best accidental meeting points. You haven’t told your family or friends that you’ve split up – you figure you’ll do that on the two-year anniversary. You keep a jar containing their hair, hermetically sealed, on your bedside table. You do a weekly search for them on the Internet and you’ve tried to join their Facebook friends under a fake identity at least twice.

It is owned and run by Roy and Lynne Hampson conducting sight tests and supplying glasses and contact lenses. Roy has spent his working life with glasses and contact lenses. He joined Clement Clarke Ltd at their London practice in Wigmore Street W1. He was soon working with Dr Josef Dallos fitting glass contact lenses before moving on to manage a practice in Berkhamsted Hertfordshire. Roy left Clement Clarke to join Contactalens as their UK sales manager importing the first soft contact lenses into the UK from Canada. He then set up a group of four practices in and around London before going on to work for Alcon Laboratories in Watford as their UK marketing manager. A spell with Sangers as
their London area director controlling 23 London practices was followed by a move to Southampton to work for CooperVision as their UK marketing manager. In 1985 Roy set up the Southampton based Optique. The first practice was in Bedford Place followed by Bitterne Precinct. Optique was a progressive optician which became well known for its friendly staff and efficient service. More practices followed at Totton, Hedge End and Shirley High Street, the latest one being in Hythe. Roy always insists on the highest standards of service, full instrumentation and highly trained friendly and efficient staff.

The Amazing Mister Mittens Toby Daniels thought it was extremely unfair that he had to go next door and feed Mrs Withershaw’s cat. His neighbour would be in hospital for a whole week having a hip replacement. The boring chore would make him late home from school, and that meant ten minutes less computer game playing while his Mother made dinner. It simply was asking too much. He’d never paid much attention to Mrs Withershaw’s pet before. It had always seemed like the usual sort of cat, but by the third day of caring for it Toby wasn’t so sure. Yesterday he had left a dirty bowl next to the sink and today when he let himself in, the bowl had been washed and placed on the draining board. He watched as Mister Mittens hungrily ate his dinner. When he was sure the cat had finished Toby gently picked him up and placed him on the counter. “Show me how you turned on the tap, Mister Mittens,” Toby whispered in the cat’s ear. Mister Mittens began licking his paws enigmatically, clearly in no mood for performing. This was not the first time something unusual had happened. On the first day, 48
in his rush to get home, Toby had knocked over a pile of newspapers, causing them to cascade across the kitchen floor. When he returned the next day Mister Mitten had piled the newspapers up neatly again. In fact as Toby walked in, the cat was curled up asleep on top of them. Toby wondered if all cats were as amazing as Mister Mittens, or whether this was a very special cat. He decided to ask his Mother. Mrs Daniels seemed genuinely surprised about how clever Mister Mittens was. “What a very considerate cat,” she agreed. Over the following days Mister Mittens, while being left home alone, somehow put the empty tins of cat food into the recycling, swept up scattered cat litter and mopped up a puddle of milk next to the fridge. Toby knew that the milk had been mopped, not licked up, because the mop and bucket had moved, and the mop was damp. It began to rain the day before Mrs Withershaw was due to come home from hospital, and the rain continued into the evening. Mrs Daniels noticed that Toby kept glancing nervously out of the living room window. “Something wrong Toby dear?” she asked finally.
“I’m worried about next door,” Toby said. “I noticed a leak in Mrs Withershaw’s back porch, and if this rain carries on she’s going to have a big puddle there when she gets home. She could slip over and ruin that brand new hip.” “Oh dear.” Mrs Daniels pretended to read her magazine while watching her son out of the corner of her eye. “What is there to be done about it?” It amazed and amused her that Toby still hadn’t realised that she had been going round to Mrs Withershaw’s every morning to tidy up the mess he’d made. She was seeing another side to Toby emerging as he cared for that old cat, so she was more than happy for Mister Mittens to take all the credit. Toby made up his mind and went into the hall for his coat. “I’m going back there now to put a bucket under it,” he said decisively. “That’s very thoughtful of you,” Mrs Daniels said, delighted that her son was finally learning to be considerate. Then, unable to resist, she added, “But won’t Mister Mittens do it?” “Honestly Mum!” Toby sighed, zipping up his coat. “You can’t expect a cat to think of everything.”

Winter Care for your Cat As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, our cats often need a little extra care and TLC to keep them warm and happy over winter. • Ensure your cat’s able to come into the warmth when they want to and not left out in the cold for prolonged periods of time • Supply extra toys and scratch posts to keep your cat happy indoors • Be cautious about the use of antifreeze – it can be deadly poisonous to cats and has a rather nice sweet taste to it. • Be particularly vigilant when starting your car – cats like to curl up against anything warm – including your car’s engine • If you use indoor heaters, have them checked for carbon monoxide leakage- cats are just as susceptible to poisoning as we are. Tips brought to you by Cats @ Seadown.

What kind of Christmas Shopper are you? By Kate McLellan
It’s that time of year again: the month when you start making lists of the Christmas presents you need to buy for your nearest and dearest. We all approach Christmas shopping in a different way but some of us display a more creative edge than others when shopping for that perfect gift. See if you can spot the shopping technique that most resembles yours in the list below: 1. The Very, Very Early Bird You are the shopper who can be found cramming your basket full of cut-price wrapping paper, Christmas cards and toiletry gift sets in the January sales. No matter that those beautifully boxed hot toddy mixing kits failed to interest shoppers in the pre-Christmas rush. Now they’re reduced to half price you can think of at least three relatives who would just LOVE to receive them next Christmas. Well done, Very Early Bird. You might save yourself a good deal of money, but will you remember where you’ve hidden all those 54
cut-price goodies by next December? 2. The Last Minute Man You are the antithesis of the Very Early Bird: someone who just can’t find the motivation to buy presents until three hours before the shops are due to close on Christmas Eve. Then you dash round the streets with a look of sheer panic on your face, desperately hoping that the items on your list are not out of stock. If you shop online, then it’s likely that you delay your search until the day when the free delivery option is no longer available and end up spending as much on postage as you do on the presents themselves. Come on, Last Minute Shopper – you know you can do better, but deep inside you crave the adrenaline rush that comes from holding back till the very last moment. 3.The Smugly Organised Shopper It’s mid September and not only have you already compiled your gift list, you’ve probably placed your first online order, for that ‘must-have’ new gadget that will
be all the rage this Christmas. By the 1st December all your presents will be immaculately wrapped, labelled and stored in boxes under the bed. Similarly your Christmas food shopping will be a breeze, as you already have most of the things you will need, stored away in your cupboard or freezer. Organised Shopper, you are the envy of all your chaotically disorganised peers. But watch out - are you ready to face the bitter resentment of friends who shopped too late to get that ‘must-have’ gadget? 4. The Wishlister Do you remember the “Good Old Days” when Christmas presents were a surprise? Of course, some of them might not have been such a good surprise (especially Auntie Beryl’s knitted tank tops) but the mystery surrounding Christmas gifts led to a wellintentioned, communal impulse to pretend everything was lovely on the day: “Oooh, a hot water bottle cover - just what I needed!” Nowadays the element of surprise is completely missing, and all
recipients seem to do is mentally tick off gifts that, three months earlier, they entered on their Amazon wishlist. This habit leads to lazy present buying: there’s no need to spend time thinking about what your nearest and dearest would like when all you need to do is follow an on-screen link and click a button. Dear Wishlister, while we understand your desire to buy something your friend or relative really wants, we’d like to see you use a little more imagination and effort this Christmas. 5. The Crafty Maker You’ve been watching too many Kirstie Allsopp shows on TV and you now believe that the way to show real love at Christmas is to give friends and family a gift that you have made yourself.
You’ve already made your own Christmas bunting and tree decorations. You’ve knitted a festive cushion for the cat’s basket and hung a wreath made out of recycled yoghourt pots on the front door. Now you are preparing to stay up until midnight each night, stitching felt animals and painting small items of second hand furniture with Farrow and Ball tester pots. I know, Crafty Maker: you can’t wait for the look of surprise on your family’s faces when they open their presents to find something that you have carefully crafted out of papier mache and driftwood, but please don’t be disappointed if their wan smiles of appreciation
suggest that they would have preferred the latest video game. Do you recognise yourself in any of these descriptions? If so, don’t panic. It would be a very dull world if we all shopped and celebrated in the same way. Christmas a unique time of the year when the effort we make for family and friends is allimportant. However you approach your Christmas shopping, it’s always the thought that counts.

Making dream homes come true one man’s vision comes good. Oozing with vision, flair, quality craftsmanship and materials, Inspired Interiors & Property Maintenance is a turnkey Interior Design, Refurbishment and Decoration company with a passion for helping people create their dream home.
This brand new enterprise is the result of entrepreneur businessman Lee Unwin’s reaction to the first class refurbishment of a project close to his heart – his own home – a 1st-floor apartment in Bishopstoke Manor. Set in over five acres of landscaped grounds in the conservation area of Old Bishopstoke, this Grade II listed, early 19th-century converted manor house is subject to English Heritage policies on conservation, registration and protection of our nation’s historic environment.
refurbishment Undaunted by the demands of this project, Lee handpicked an Interior Designer and a team of professional tradesmen with over 300 years’ experience between them in residential interior design and installation. He was bowled over by their work and they were fired by his vision and drive. Together they joined forces to create Inspired Interiors & Property Maintenance Limited: “Attention to detail is the trademark of true craftsmanship – work that bears scrutiny, and you only get this from qualified, time-served professionals who take deep pride in their craft,” comments Lee. “My apartment was totally refurbished, taken back to its shell and transformed into chic contemporary living within classic Georgian style. New sash windows were installed together with skirtings, doors and architraves. A wall was removed, oak floors, carpets and tiles laid, walls 586
plastered, painted and papered. New electrics, boiler and radiators were incorporated, and a new kitchen and bathroom were fitted. You name it and it was done – to an exceptional standard and to English Heritage guidelines, too. It made sense to take this impressive talent and use it to create dream homes for people with an eye for quality who know exactly how they want to live.” With several bespoke projects and delighted customers to its credit, Inspired Interiors is already living up to its promise of ‘You picture it and it’s done!’ – as fellow resident and Director of Bishopstoke Manor Management Company, Pam Lawton, confirms: “The apartment is immaculate and a credit to Lee Unwin’s company, Inspired Interiors & Property Maintenance – the business it generated. The whole team was discreetly efficient and considerate of the other residents – the hallmark of a true professional.” Inspired Interiors has every trade at its highly skilled fingertips – from structural work through to decorating and carpentry, and all the behind-thescene essentials such as plumbing and electrics. Every project receives consummate attention to detail whatever its size – from decorating a single to room to the renovation of an entire building. You name it, Inspired Interiors & Property Maintenance can do it – to perfection!

News from Chandlers Ford & Winchester MP Steve Brine Chandlers Ford Station 10th birthday celebrations
They tell me time quickens the pace as you get older and I have to admit, they were right. I cannot believe I am writing my November column and soon enough we will be enjoying once again the wonders of Christmas. Before we get there however, there is much to do and many rivers to cross or put another way for hundreds of my constituents, many trains to catch. I am a regular commuter myself of course and, no matter how good the service, there are generally never any shortage of issues for rail passengers to discuss. That is why I have arranged for South West Trains boss, Tim Shoveller, to answer our questions about the service from Winchester, Shawford or Chandler’s Ford at a special open evening on Thursday 14th November 2013. It will take place in a central Winchester location and is free but you must register in advance so we can safely manage the event via www.stevebrine.com/ askswt Secondly, and staying on-track (sorry about that), I have done lots of things since becoming an MP but I’ve never attended 64
a birthday party for a railway station before! All that changed last month as Chandler’s Ford Station marked 10 years. The weather wasn’t kind to us but it was actually rather fun, certainly my little Emily enjoyed the pirate themed face-painting and making a smoothie with Dr Bike. Our successful station is testament to the vision shown by a great many people ten years ago and it is now so much part of the fabric you can’t imagine it not being there. I know many of my constituents in Chandler’s Ford value it greatly and on their behalf, pay tribute to Three Rivers and Sustrans - as well as the County Councillor Colin Davidovitz of course - who made this happen. There’s been a lot else going on in Chandler’s Ford as usual for me. Opening the new Ageas HQ on the Hampshire Corporate Park off Templars Way was a great pleasure, and I wish them well, as was cutting the ribbon for the stunning new school building at Sherborne House School. I have also been down on Hiltingbury Road (around the junction with Kingsway) lately
with local Borough and Parish Councillors to see the problems being reported to me around road safety and dangerously parked cars. We’re working together to see what change can come. Finally, in the House Commons it’s also full steam ahead and, for me, that’s involved renewed work on the future of legal aid (with some tough questions for Ministers), raising the issue of Summer-born children and school entry, hosting the breast cancer annual reception, challenging the Lord Chancellor over future investment at Winchester Prison and tackling the menace of nuisance calls. Not to mention also, supporting our Bill to finally deliver that referendum on Britain membership of the EU. Details on all of these subjects via www.stevebrine.com/ westminster You can catch-up on more of my work – locally and in Westminster – online www.stevebrine. com or by calling my office on 01962 791110. 40 Years of Christmas Charity Forty years ago, six charities joined forces to form the Chandlers Ford Joint Charities Christmas Market. The Market was opened by the then Mayor, Councillor Norris, and the total takings for the day were £297. Over the years the number of participating charities has increased to twelve. Of these Muscular Dystrophy has been represented every year and RNLI was at the Market for the first few years and has now rejoined. Proceeds raised have increased too; last year it was £2823. As well as Christmas items for sale, there has always been a cake/produce stall and a raffle. In the early years each charity supplied a raffle prize but the market now receives fantastic support from local businesses – last year there were 50 raffle prizes donated, as well as contributions towards the event’s running costs. This year’s market will be held on Saturday 9th November, from 9.30am – midday at Chandlers Ford Methodist Church Hall. It will be opened officially at 9.45 by Bodger and Badger.

6th December 2013 This year’s Late Night Shopping Evening in Romsey will once again start with a magical Lantern Parade through the town centre. At 5.30pm, up to 350 lanterns lit by LED torches and featuring a range of striking seasonal designs, all made by local groups and residents, will be paraded from The Archway in Romsey, up Bell Street, through the Bus Station to The Hundred and on to the Market Square. The Test Valley Band will lead the Parade with Romsey Community Choir adding their voices to what promises to be a stunning visual and moving event. Last year’s Parade was described as “the best thing in Romsey this year” – so don’t miss your chance to be part of this immensely popular spectacle. Join the Parade at its Finale in the North Garth of Romsey Abbey where the Band and the Community Choir will lead a short session of carol-singing. You can then go on in the Christmas spirit to explore all that is on offer with Late Night Shopping .

Ground Cover Planting Carpet of foliage
Ground cover plantings are a wonderful way to create gorgeous carpets of colour in your garden, whatever its size and wherever it’s located. But what’s so special about ground cover growing, when is it most useful and when should you start? Slopes are a common feature in gardens, and they can be hard to manage, but with ground cover planting, once it’s established you’ll not have to do acrobatics to keep it looking good. The initial few months will take some effort, but once growing well, most ground cover planting needs little if any maintenance except perhaps a very occasional trim, and some food and water in drier weather.
As ground cover plantings will cover the soil surface they will have a superbly smothering effect on the weeds, killing weedlings and deterring further weeds from appearing. The denser the planting, the better the effect. Autumn is a great time for planting. Trees, shrubs, climbers and herbaceous plants that go in to the ground at this time of year often establish extremely well as they have the luxury of enjoying the relatively warm and yet moist soil, a perfect place for new roots to grow out and establish rapidly. For the best results it’s worth investing a bit of time and effort in to the preparation. Clear the area of weeds, digging out all tough weeds completely if you can. Fork the soil over, removing debris such as large stones or buried rubbish and then fork in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost, and perhaps a little slow-release feed too. If you’re planting up a slope, it’s worth trying to secure the soil a little too, as all that preparation and weed clearing will have
loosened the surface and made it prone to erosion. Once growing well, the roots of the plants will help to secure the slope brilliantly, but in the meantime, use landscape fabric pinned down onto the surface of the slope. Simply cut an ‘X’ shape in the fabric at each planting position, and plant through the hole. An added advantage is that the landscape fabric will also prevent weeds growing up from the soil. Cover the surface of the fabric with chipped bark or a bit of soil to camouflage it if you wish. Although you are after a carpet of foliage and maybe also flower, don’t be tempted to cram the plants in too closely. Given time they will form the desired effect if planted at the correct spacing. But if you fall in to the trap of planting them elbow to elbow, then they are more likely to become stressed and miserable, more prone to disease and will need thinning out. Ground cover plantings need the same sort of maintenance that you’d give if the plants were used individually or in small numbers in a garden border or bed. Make sure they are kept
just moist at the roots until they’re well established and feed occasionally. By choosing varieties of plants which are recommended for use as ground cover you’ll be unlikely to have to do much if any pruning. So what should you choose to grow? Foliage that is attractive and interesting is ideal and if you wish you can add a few more flamboyant flowering plants to the mixture too. Used as ‘dot plants’, the flowering additions will have more impact and look great set against a backdrop of pretty foliage. By using plants with interestingly shaped leaves or variegated leaves your planting will look even better. You may want your ground cover planting to look stunning at a particular time of year, but if you’re after a reasonable effect all year around, then select at
least some of the plants you use from the evergreens.
Shrubby Ground Cover Heaths and Heathers, Cotoneaster horizontalis and Cotoneaster microphyllus, Stephandra incise ‘Crispa’, ground cover roses eg the ‘Flower Carpet’ roses.
Shade-Tolerant Ground Cover Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis, Mahonia repens, Gaultheria procumbens, Hypericum calycinum, many hebes including Hebe pinguifolia, Euonymus fortune cultivars such as ‘Emerald n’Gold’, ‘Emerald Gaiety’
Herbaceous Cover in Shadier Spots Sweet violets, pulmonaria (lungworts) eg the white-flowered ‘Sissinghurst’, Bugle (the ajugas
