THE ROTARY CLUB OF BISHOP’S WALTHAM Bishop’s Waltham

PRESENTS

Carnival and Village Show Saturday June 7th 2014

Procession and Motorcade - 12 noon Show - 1.00pm to 5.00pm at Hoe Road Recreation Ground This year’s theme

Bishop’s Waltham Rotary is celebrating its 25th birthday (Silver Anniversary) this year, which coincides with our 20th year of organising and running the Bishop’s Waltham annual Carnival and Show. In its first year the event was much smaller however but has grown into the big local occasion that it is today. Until a few years ago the main event was at Bishop’s Waltham Palace but it was moved to Hoe Road Recreation Ground so that the show could be dramatically increased in size. This enabled us to have more stalls from local organisations, more commercial stands, more entertainment particularly for children, increased arena activities, the introduction of a classic car procession through Bishop’s Waltham and a display at the show ground. This year we are aiming to increase the numbers taking part in the procession after a bit of a decline in the last few years. Clearly this is a great day out for families in The Meon Valley. But importantly this is the biggest fund raising event for Bishop’s Waltham Rotary and it also enables many of our local organisations and clubs to raise their own funds The funds we raise from the Carnival and Show together with our Christmas collection with ‘Roger the Railway Engine’ and other activities are used to provide support and assistance to many good causes. To understand how vital these funds are to our community, look through the programme and you will find the stories behind the local charities that have received donations from our fund during the last 12 months. Bishop’s Waltham Rotary doesn’t fundraise in isolation however being part of the World Wide Rotary organisation. In conjunction with the World Wide Rotary members, we support a number of national and international charities and disaster relief efforts around the world. The Rotary has also been at the forefront of the effort to eradicate Polio through an immunisation programme of children, particularly in the Developing World. We are almost there but there are still a small number of countries where Polio continues to be a major threat. The effort continues with your help and £1 donated will enable 3 children to be immunised. Another date for your diary is the “Stroke Awareness (Know Your Blood Pressure)” event and “Thanks for Life (Polio immunisation support)”. This takes place on Saturday 12th July at the Kings Centre in the High St, Bishop’s Waltham between 9 am – 1 pm. We like to think that, as a result of running this event for a number of years, we have helped to save the lives of a number of people who were advised to consult their doctor for further investigation after having their blood pressure checked. Without the advertisers in this programme and the residents’ attendance on the big day, many local charities would lose out, so your support is much appreciated. All the effort put in by so many volunteers is worthwhile when you see so many of you following the procession, and later at the show having a really good time. We’d love to see you at our stand on the day! Colin Carter President 2013/14

his event combines a more serious 5 mile Road Race which provides experienced athletes with an ideal warm up for the Great South Run and a 2 mile Fun Run. The latter is generally dominated by youngsters and gives local groups the opportunity to raise money for their own funds by way of sponsorship. This year's race is on the Sunday 20th July and will be run in conjunction with Fareham Crusaders Running Club and Bishop's Waltham Junior School PTA. The event is kindly sponsored and supported by local estate agent Bishops and by Budgens supermarket. Both races start in Hoe Rd, near to Bishop's Waltham School, which will be the race HQ. Numbers will be issued from check-in desks at the school which will close 30 minutes before the start of each race. Parking is at Hoe Recreation ground or in one of the village car parks.

ach year the Carnival and Show gets bigger and better. Not to be outdone by our predecessors, we've put more than ever into the 2014 plans. With a record turnout of over 4500 visitors last year, and over 100 stands, we need your support to ensure that we achieve our goal. Of course the Show is a great day out for all who come along, but more than that, it delivers benefits to the community throughout the whole year. With the support of the Show visitors, the stallholders, and the advertisers in this guide, there is an aim to raise ÂŁ10,000 for the Rotary Charity Fund, which supports many local voluntary and charitable groups who otherwise would have to curtail their activities. We hope for sunshine of course (and are usually lucky) but whatever the weather, please do join us on the 7th June.

rom 12 noon through Bishop's Waltham High Street, come and see the beautiful classic cars and motorbikes driving through, and applaud and marvel at the float parade on the Heroes and Villains theme.

otary members often give their time to support other local charities by managing parking, marshalling sponsored walks erecting marquees etc. In this picture five Rotarians are supervising parking for the annual Bauble Hunt in Bishop's Waltham which raises money for Naomi House. otarians man their Human Fruit Machine, by popular demand, at the combined Community Day and Italian Market. Not everyone was lucky enough to win as £124 was raised for our Charity Account.

ome Start Meon Valley is a worthwhile local charity which the Rotary Club supports. On this occasion past President Peter Clarke presents a cheque to help them carry on their good work in the local community. 6

Advantage Business Centre Advantage Business Centre has been in Bishops Waltham for nearly 5 years now and was created to help small to medium size businesses across the Solent region get started, keep going and, with time, succeed. Centre Manager Nigel Prior says: “We aim to support small companies and sole traders with a multitude of outsourcing services including virtual office address and telephone answering, along with social media marketing, accounts, printing, and much more all for small fixed monthly fees. We are literally your ‘staff’ so you can get on with building your business and using your skills to help your clients. We also run a very good network club called Business Builders which Malcolm Archibald and I have had great fun with and have lots of small businesses attending every fortnight. With great speakers and friendly breakfast meeting, we’re we all help each other to that next level. Anyone is welcome and you can come and go as often as you

18

like no annual fees. Our club has proved to be highly successful and we regularly have 40-50 people at each meeting with over 330 members around the Solent area.” Nigel also wanted to add his own note of support to the Rotary Club and the Carnival. “I did chair the Titchfield Bonfire Boy's Society back in 2007-2009 which was my first ever volunteering role and gave me an insight into what’s involved being a volunteer. The Rotary Club do support fantastic causes and the annual carnival helps those charities and really brings the community together.”

aving Lives in our Community. This is the purpose of our annual 'Stroke Awareness' day which this year will be on Saturday 12th July Rotarian Bob Glibbery enourages two young in the High Street ladies to give 50p outside the Kings towards 'thanks for life' Church. Rotarian Ian Treveil, currently a major in the Army Medical Corps, will be on hand with his highly trained medical team to check the blood pressure of any willing shopper. We have done this for many years and have probably saved many lives by informing those with high readings to see their GP urgently. In tandem, we are promoting the Rotary 'End Polio Now' initiative and asking passers by to donate 50p to save three lives by inoculating children who are at risk. The picture shows that these two children were happy to donate their pocket money to this world wide initiative. request for help replacing some old and unsafe chairs at the Meon Valley Day Care Centre did not Rotary Club cheque presentation go unheeded. to Meon Valley Day Care Centre President Colin Carter with Past President Peter Clarke presented a cheque to The Centre Manager Denise Griffiths and Director of Age Concern Hampshire Rick Smith. Add A Little Certainty To Your Future The harsh fact is, we are very likely to be close to someone who gets a serious illness. Taking out a critical illness policy can offer some financial reassurance. These policies pay out a lump sum on diagnosis of a specified condition, eg, cancer, stroke or heart attack. Critical illness cover is complex and consumers often fail to understand what is and isn’t covered, so it pays to get expert help. It’s not just younger people that need to consider all eventualities. You will have seen whole of life assurance (WOL) for older people advertised on television to cover funeral costs. However, WOL policies do more than simply cover this. They could help against a potential inheritance tax (IHT) bill. IHT is currently paid on the excess of an estate worth more than £325,000 or £650,000 if you are married or have a civil

IPlatesPCs

partner. A common way to prepare for IHT is to take out a WOL policy in trust*, which provides a lump sum that can be used to pay the IHT bill after death. Proceeds do not form part of your estate, provided it is in trust. So if your estate is expected to be liable for IHT, of say £30,000, you take out a policy for that sum to cover it. Many people think of financial planning as creating wealth. It is, but it is also about protecting what you already have. With some expert guidance, you can add some certainty to your financial future. During the past few weeks many of you may have heard of the crisis appeal launched by The Rainbow Centre. We provide essential support to children and adults with cerebral palsy and adults with Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and those recovering from a stroke or head injury. We are making an urgent appeal for funds to prevent being forced to close our doors. Our service has operated for 24 years and we need to raise £150,000 urgently. Around 77 children and adults presently attend the Centre and if it is closed there is no equivalent service. Despite operating an energised approach to generating income, the recession has proved too much, leaving us with no cash reserves. Closure could be devastating for many, as the Centre is accessed by people from Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight. Since launching the appeal we have received donations of £118,000, but we still need to reach our conservative target of £150,000. The Rainbow Centre originally began working with children with cerebral palsy and their families, teaching Conductive Education, which helps develop new neural pathways to undamaged parts of the brain. In 2007 the service was extended to include adults. Andrew and Jo Syvret’s daughter, Jemima, attends the centre: The Rainbow Centre has been an enormous source of help over the years to our daughter and family. It offered us hope and a tangible way to help our little daughter when she was first diagnosed with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. The Centre has helped Jemima enormously physically - the staff at the St.Louis Children's Hospital (in the US, where she has just had neurosurgery) have commented positively on Jemima's posture and ability - both of which are a result of constant physio and the work at The Rainbow Centre.

Jo Syvret with Jemima stand ing and one of ou r cond Derbak helping uctors, Zita Jemima

The staff at the Centre are tireless in their efforts to help children achieve their potential - it also provides parents with a network to make lifelong friends and share knowledge and support. The Rainbow Centre offers a critical lifeline to individuals and families in the South of the UK and beyond. We have been humbled by the level of response to our appeal, but need to raise more awareness. Please be a part of our story and help The Rainbow Centre to be around for another 25 years continuing to deliver its outstanding and life-changing service.

TO DONATE: Tel: 01329 289500 or TEXT RBOW21 and the donation amount to 70070 Visit www.rainbowcentre.org Visit our Crisis Appeal page. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In and help to spread the news of our appeal. The Bradbury Building, Palmerston Drive, Fareham, Hampshire, PO14 1BJ Charity No 1096603

Following the success of this year’s Swanmore Fete, the Meon Valley Lions Club wishes to thank the members of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club as Valued Helpers for supporting and helping MVLC in raising approximately £3000 from this event and also helping 15 other charitable organisations to raise funds via their stalls on the Fete ground.

I am writing on behalf of Swanmore Care Group and Lunch Club, to thank the Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club for the very generous donation of £100 to our Lunch Club. This will support our Christmas lunch and help us to ensure our members enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal and a friendly social situation. At a time when regular financial support is being withdrawn from the Group, such a donation is indeed extremely welcome. Once again, thank you to the members of the Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club.

Judith Moss Secretary, Swanmore Care Group & Lunch Club

Thank you for the cheque for £100 which I received today. The members of the Tuesday Lunch Club thank you, most sincerely, for your contribution to their Christmas lunch. The helpers will make sure that they enjoy the occasion. Thank you, once again

A belated ‘Thank You’ for your very generous gift to Upham Bandits Youth Club. After much debate we have invested in a secondhand interactive Wii game for the teenage room and also a freestanding basketball net for outside. The new equipment is already being well used and enjoyed. Many thanks again to Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club. Debbie Prince, Upham Bandits

Bishop’s Waltham Butchers Your Local Butcher Bishop’s Waltham Butchers has been established for ten years this year, and we have seen many changes. Peter, who now manages the shop, has brought in some new and great ideas with freshly made stir fries, Beef Wellington and Duck Breast in hoi sin sauce, to name but a few. We have over ten different sausage varieties, all made in the shop from prime ingredients. We also make all our own burgers; the all-time favourite beef burger as well as tomato and olive and hot and spicy. All our meat is specially selected from local suppliers to ensure we can deliver the best quality to all

our customers at competitive prices. We are always looking to move forward with quality and service, we are never satisfied with “good enough” but as we all know perfection takes time. As the weather promises to improve we have made great investments in equipment and staff and we can now offer outside barbecues and hog roasts; why not ask how we can make your special event even more memorable, Don’t forget that we can offer all our varieties, quality and service at our shop in the Locks Heath Shopping Centre.

Last year, Bishop’s Waltham Rotarians, Bob and Malcolm asked us if the Discover Magazine team would co-ordinate the 2014 Carnival Programme giving them more time to focus on the Carnival itself. So, using our experience of publishing your local community magazine, Discover, we have happily given our time to making it happen; from booking advertisers, compiling editorial, designing artwork, arranging the print and Royal Mail who delivered all 7,300 copies. As you can see, it’s packed with adverts from local businesses who would love to hear from you so please keep your Programme for future reference. And, if you do contact an advertiser remember to say where you found them. Then hopefully, next year, they’ll all want to advertise again! A special word of thanks to Debbie our super efficient co-ordinator and Heather, our design angel for all their hard work, too. Let’s hope the sun shines on 7th June and everyone has a wonderful day.
