Welcome to the 2013 Bishop’s Waltham Carnival and Village Show It seems incredible that the Rotary Club has been organising the carnival for 21 years, having taken over from the old Bishop’s Waltham Carnival Committee in 1992. I was looking at an old 1988 Carnival magazine and noticed that several of the businesses advertising then are still here in the village today. Not really that surprising as Bishop’s Waltham thrives and retains as well as attracting more businesses to the town. Even in the present uncertain economic climate, Bishop’s Waltham appears to buck the trend and continues to prosper. The Carnival and Show has now firmly established itself at the Hoe Road Sports Ground with enough space to accommodate up to 100 stall holders. This year we have the popular Batala Band leading the procession so expect plenty of noise along the way! The theme for this year is ‘Kids, Clowns and Cartoons’, so plenty of scope for groups to enter a float or walking tableaux. In the showground, there will be arena events and also children’s entertainment and fairground rides. We also hope to have up to 100 classic cars on display (depending on the weather)! The carnival generally raises in excess of £10,000 for the Rotary Charity Fund and it is our practise to distribute these funds to local worthy causes. In the past year, the club has donated to the following: Swanmore Young Carers; BW Guides; Lively lady project; Gateway Club; Monday and Thursday Lunch Clubs; Friends in Retirement; Waltham Wolves; Canine Partners; Meon Valley Carers; Rainbow Centre; Orchid Cancer Charity; St John’s Eye Hospital. Internationally, we support: Friends of Teso; Water Aid; Philippines Flood Relief Appeal and Shelter Boxes. We thank Malcolm Wearn and his team for organising the carnival but also the residents and businesses of Bishop’s Waltham for their continued support and generosity, without whom, we at the club would not be able to positively contribute to the local causes. Enjoy the Carnival Parade and Show, tell your friends and family and have a great, safe day out.

Pete Clarke President of the Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club 2

What is Rotary? Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business and professional persons that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.3 million Rotarians belong to more than 33,000 Rotary Clubs located in 194 countries and regions. The world’s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non political, non religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Waltham is just one cog in the larger wheel of Rotary International.

Welcome to Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club We are a small, dynamic, dual gender group of like minded professional people of all ages and backgrounds, who meet once a week to not only give something back to the community in which we live and work, but to organise charity events, socialise, network and have a meal! • THINK ROTARY IS NOT FOR YOU? • WONDERING HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE? • WANT TO KNOW MORE? We are currently looking for new members so if you would like to find out more about who we are and what we do, please get in touch via our website or contact Peter Clarke on 01489 893711 (Mobile 07799 702656) for an informal chat! Some of us work full time; some part time and some are retired so we meet in the evenings at East Horton Golf Club. We’d love you to come along and join us, have a bite to eat and meet us. Just let us know in advance (if you can) so we can ensure there is plenty of food to go round! We have sandwiches on 1st & 3rd Thursdays of every month at 6.30pm and we have meals on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of every month at 7pm for 7.30pm. During the past year, the Club has made donations to the following organisations:Age Concern (Hampshire)

Carnival and Show on Saturday 1st June 2013 to the theme - ‘kids, clowns & cartoons’ Please Support the Bishop’s Waltham Carnival & Village Show Bigger and Better 2012 was a great year for the Carnival, but we are planning for a more spectacular event this year. THE CARNIVAL & MOTORCADE

Last year, by way of innovation, a motorcade of classic cars and motorcycles was introduced – a great success, which will be repeated this year. Plans are in place to expand the procession in 2013 with even more floats – and new for this year - prizes will be awarded for the best floats and walking tableaux.

THE SHOW - supporting local clubs and organisations We aim to maintain our target of 100 stands, with fairground rides, displays of classic cars and bikes, music bands, dog displays, children’s games etc. A wide variety of refreshments will be available to include a BBQ, ice creams, beer tent, soft drinks and much more. Last year around 4,000 people attended – we hope for even more this year. The aim is to stage a truly local show, backed by major local sponsors and supported by the community to raise funds for local charities. The Carnival generally raises in excess of £10,000 for the Rotary Charity Fund and a similar sum is also raised by charitable and local groups running their own stands. It is our practice to distribute significant funds raised on Carnival Day back to local worthy causes.

Bishop’s Waltham Road Race and Fun Run This year the events will be held on Sunday 21st July. It will be run in conjunction with Fareham Crusaders Running Club and Bishop’s Waltham Junior School PTA. The event is sponsored and supported by the local estate agent Bishops, Budgens and Viking Garages. Both races will start in Hoe Road, near to Bishop’s Waltham Junior School, which will be the Event HQ. Race numbers will be issued from check-in desks at the school. Please note the desks will close 30 minutes before the start of each race, so make sure you allow sufficient time for parking at either Hoe Road Recreation ground or in one of the village car parks. • Road Race

Start - 10.30am

• Fun Run

Start - 11.30am

The Road Race provides experienced athletes with an ideal warm up for the Great South Run. The 2 mile Fun Run is generally dominated by youngsters and gives local groups the opportunity to raise money for their own funds by sponsorship. For entry forms apply on line to All funds raised in the Road Race will go equally to Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club and Fareham Crusaders nominated charities.

This Year’s Race Day is Sunday 21st July For further information see:

Window Dressing Competition On the morning of the Show the Annual Window Dressing Competition will be judged from 9.00 a.m. Entry is open to any shop or office with a ground floor window visible from the pavement in the town centre. Certificates will be awarded to the best entries. This competition is organised by John Edwards – 01489 860873 Call him to enter!
