Handover of hospital equipment from Friends of Tipperary University Hospital

Members of the Friends of Tipperary University Hospital with Hospital Management and Staff on the handover of new equipment purchased for Patient Care and Services.

In 1980 Mr. John Savage established the Friends of St Joseph’s Hospital to raise funds for equipment required for patient care which at the time was not covered by the HSE budget.

The current group continues this excellent work in support of Tipperary University Hospital and has successfully raised thousands through fundraising events which have benefitted patients of all ages accessing the hospital services.

In 2000 Mr. John Savage along with Ms. Ann Kavanagh and friends from the Hospital Management, Staff and the Local community sought a radio licence and were successfully awarded a 10 year licence, which is updated every 10 years since.

Through sponsored shows and volunteer presenters we continue this work . Mr. John Savage retired last year and Mr. Frank O’Dwyer took over the role as station manager and co-director of the Charity with Mr. Seamus Healy and Mr. Fredrick Kavanagh. The Friends of Tipperary University Hospital has Charity status.

On 16/12/24 Friends of Tipperary University Hospital presented TippUH hospital staff with 3 valuable pieces of equipment.

These included 1 hydraulic couch for the OPD area and 2 Arjo Sara Stedy devices.

Arjo Sara Stedy is a mobile active lift used to transfer patients from one seated position to

another seated position e.g. bed, chair, toilet, commode. These are used by physiotherapists, Nursing staff & healthcare assistants daily on the wards to facilitate patient’s treatment & rehabilitation.

TippUH management & staff are very grateful to Friends of Tipperary University Hospital for purchasing these 3 devices which are extremely valuable to service users in TippUH. MARLFIELD HURLING CLUB -

A small club with a long and proud tradition going back to 1946 HURLING

Marlfield GAA Club, located in the village of Marlfield on the outskirts of Clonmel, has a long and proud tradition.

In 1945, Michael O’Keeffe was approached and asked to help in the formation of the Club. After lengthy discussions, he agreed, and the club was officially formed in 1946. The first official committee members

were: Michael O’Keeffe (President), Frank Halley (Secretary) and Wally Lynch (Treasurer).

Paddy Hogan, Paddy Quinlivan, Paddy Williams, Mickey Ryan, and Tommy Carey were also involved at these early stages also.

Since then, the club proudly boasts four South Senior hurling titles with wins coming in 1960, 1962, 1964 and 1970.

In recent years fixture disrup-

tion and uncertainty, due to the covid19 pandemic, and a lack of a proper championship structure, the clubs numbers were falling and failed to field teams on a few occasions. However, pride in the club was not something that was missing from the committee. They set about trying to build a team for the 2024 season. After a long winter of, hard work, numerous phone

calls and chats they were able to gather the guts of a team for the coming season. Paddy O’Donoghue was appointed as manager along with selectors Declan Fahey and Joe O’Donoghue. A meeting was had in mid February with the management and the players who had committed to playing for the year.

The South Junior B championship was given a much better structure than in previous years.

The 2024 championship would see 12 teams entered. There were two groups of 6, with the top four in each group qualifying for the Junior B quarter finals, and the bottom two in each would contest in the newly formed Junior C championship.

This new structure guaranteed five championship league games plus at least one knockout game to each club. This was exactly what the players wanted, games and a clear structure.

Training began on Wednesday nights and the commitment was clear to see. The nights slogging it out under lights on soft ground, in freezing temperatures and most often rain was really starting to build a bond amongst the players. The main thing was the players were enjoying it. Word was spreading and more were joining. Something was building again. Challenge matches were played and the panel were looking forward

to the beginning of championship hurling.

The first round of the championship was played in Goatenbridge against Skeheenarinky.

tually playing their first adult championship games, and others had not played in quite a few years. Once the initial nerves went and the team settled the came from seven points down to

run out convincing winners on a scoreline of 5-9 to 1-13. A first championship win in 4 years for the club.

Next up was Killenaule in Clerihan. Bouyed by the win in the first round they went at it from the start and again ran out good winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-10. This win along with a walkover from Carrick Swan would see them qualify for the quarter final of the Junior B championship with two games to spare.

The third game was against Kilsheelan played in Clonmel Og. In all honesty, the players would admit it was their poorest performance. Too many wides and missed chances was the order of the day as Kilsheelan ran out winners 1-14 to 0-11.

The last game in the group was against unbeaten Carrick Davins. Marlfield were missing a few players through injury and holidays. Also management decided to use this game to give everyone a run and try a few positional changes. The lads put in an excellent battling performance under the circumstances but Davins ran out winners on a scoreline of 4-10 to 1-9.

The draw for the quarter-final saw Marlfield up against one of the pre championship favourites in Clerihan. Having been well supported all year, a very big crowd turned up to a windy morning in Cahir for the game. Playing against the breeze Marlfield found themselves five points down halfway through the first half. However two goals in the first half saw the sides go in level at the break. The game looked there for the taking at half time. Clerihan however used all their experience against the breeze dropping players back into their own half not allowing the Marlfield forwards any room.

With the game in the melting pot with 10 minutes to go Clerihan got a goal against the run of play. With the gap stretched to five points Marlfield required goals to rescue it. Despite the

best efforts of all unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

Clerihan ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-13 to 2-4. 11 of Clerihans points game from placed balls. The disappointment in the dressing room was clear to see.

However on reflection, a team that were in their first year together getting to a quarter final and running one of the favourites so close was a fantastic achievement. All of the players committed to return next year and continue on the great progress they made in the first year.

In all throughout the year 30 players saw game time. A few injuries to players at certain times didn’t help but that is sport.

The club would like to give a mention to Mullinahone and Tipperary legend John Leahy who took a couple of training sessions early in the year. He also gave some good advice and guidance to the management team on how to get the best out of the year.

winning team took a number of excellent training sessions.

To have that kind of knowledge and experience to call on was a massive help to the management team and really drove the players on. He also brought the Munster and All Irelands Cups out with him which created a great buzz around the club on the night.

Rounders is a bat and ball game, played by men, women and children (9 players in total).

Teams can be gender specific or mixed. It is a game suitable for all ages and all skill levels. A fun and friendly game played in a social setting providing an opportunity to meet socially while working as a team. It is a striking and fielding team game that involves hitting a ball with a wooden or metal bat. The players score by running around the four bases on the field.

A Rounders Open Day was held at the club in June 2024 which was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by both parents and children alike.

Training sessions are currently held every Wednesday at 7 pm up until end of September after

FARMING

Lurching, illegal hunting and trespass a scourge – IFA deputy president IFA Deputy President Alice Doyle has described the current level of illegal activities such as lurching, illegal hunting and trespass as outrageous. Reports coming in from all over the country have indicated a rise in these activities. Farmers and landowners are deeply concerned and worried about their personal safety as a result of threats and assaults.

The Deputy President said that despite arrests and court appearances in some parts of the country, the number of groups and individuals going onto farms and lands has increase. She welcomed the joint approach by the Gardaí and National Parks and Wildlife Services in carrying out operations, but she stressed that this needs to be done on a structured and ongoing basis.

IFA and other farming bodies are united in their approach in calling for a clamp down on these unlawful practices and for realistic fines and sentences for the crimes committed.

“We are calling for a dedicated campaign by relevant state bodies such as An Garda Siochána and the National Parks and Wildlife Service to tackle the gangs who act with apparent impunity, and for collaboration between various Rural Community Groups such as the members of the National Rural Safety Forum to come out to support the state agencies.”

IFA has called for the establishment of a dedicated Garda Section/ Unit such as a Rural Safety Unit to co-ordinate patrols, monitor burglaries and share intelligence with other police forces.

Northern Ireland, Scotland England and Wales have dedicated Rural Crime Leads to tackle the issue. Alice Doyle said that Ireland has been targeted on three successive occasions in 2024 by these gangs with criminal damage to fences, buildings and vehicles leading to huge costs in repairs, replacements and insurance payouts.

In the lead up to the festive season and beyond, there has to be a high visibility approach by Gardai and strong deterrents to curb these gangs and individuals from trespass, illegal hunting and intimidating and threatening people.

Pig Market Update There was no change to Irish pig price on Friday, 13th December with producers reporting quotes ranging from €2.08 – €2.13 available from processors in the Republic of Ireland.

The EU average price for week 49 for grade E carcass was €1.92/ kg excluding vat. This represents a drop of -.5% over the past month and is -9% behind last year’s EU average price for the same week.

There has been little change to EU pigmeat prices over the last six weeks, indicating an active demand for pigs in Ireland where processors were actively looking for available pigs.

The weekly throughput for week ending December 15th was 72,367, practically identical to last week, of which 1,966 were sows.

On the feed market, in wheat, markets are focusing on crop conditions, especially in Russia, where the winter temperatures have arrived without a thick snow cover. A full crop assessment will be needed at the end of winter, but the season is off to a poor start, as was noted by the Argus crop tour a few weeks ago.

Saudi Arabia has recently contracted nearly 800,000 tons of wheat. The pace of global exports will be important to watch, with Russia’s export quota of 11 million tons set to start in mid-February.

Export flows from Russia are slowing at the end of this year due to the volatility in export taxes and weather conditions.

IFA Accounts to March 31, 2024 approved by National Council In a bulletin released just before Christmas the Irish Farmers’ Association recorded an operational deficit of €895,213 (before tax) to the year end March 31st, 2024. The Annual Accounts were approved at a meeting of the National Council on Tuesday, 17th December.

with lower commodity prices which impacted our levy income, this meant it was a challenging financial year for the Association.

An increase in membership subscriptions was agreed in December 2023 and implemented from March 1st, 2024. This increase should ensure that the organisation will have an operating surplus to the year end March

2025.

IFA does not rely on Government funding for their activities.

To represent farmers effectively, we have to be well-resourced by our own means. We also need strong reserves. The IFA is an organisation for farmers, run by farmers. We need to ensure it remains strong and that we can operate without fear or favour.

SHEEP UPDATE IFA Sheep Chairman Adrian Gallagher said lamb prices continue upwards as factories struggle to secure suitable numbers of lambs. He said demand for sheep meat is intensifying each week against a backdrop of tight supplies. Throughput for spring lamb is back over 190,000 head from the same period last year and in expected to tighten further in the coming weeks as supplies continue to drop off. Factories have increased prices by 30c/kg this week and are offering deals from €8.50kg to €8.80kg on weights to 24kg with higher deals for groups and larger lots.

This demand is also reflected in our key markets with UK sheep meat prices rising by a further 5c/kg to 10c/kg this week.

Cull ewe prices have also increased by up to 20c/kg to 30c/kg with prices ranging from €4.30kg to €4.50kg available to sellers.

Adrian Gallagher said demand for all types of sheep are very strong in marts and is a viable alternative for sellers unable to secure the higher factory prices.

Adrian Gallagher continued by saying that factories are very anxious for lambs and farmers should sell hard while moving lambs as they become fit.

The German chef who put Cashel on the world’s food map Chez Hans, opened fifty W years ago this week hile Cashel is best known for the imposing Rock of Cashel that has stood overlooking the town for nigh on a millennium and a half at this stage, there are several buildings which might be considered hidden gems dotted around the town that also catch the eye and the interest. One of those, literally sits in the shadow of the imposing Rock, and among the gourmet food lovers of the world, is just as well known. That of course is Chez Hans, a classic restaurant in a classic building, which has been spoken of in almost reverent tones since it opened almost six decades ago.

December 10 1968, a young German chef and his wife Derry made the audacious step to open a restaurant that would dispense the finest of foods. Ireland at the time was hardly renowned for classic dining, but as the old adage goes, if the product is good, it will sell itself. And in the sixty years since, there has never been an issue with the service at the famous eatery. The young couple chose an interesting location for their dining room. The imposing Synod Hall on Moor Lane in Cashel was built in the mid 19th century, and is a freestanding Gothic Revival-style Church of Ireland church, with three-bay nave and lower single-bay chancel, a gable-fronted porch and square-plan two-stage tower to northwest corner and single-storey flat-roof addition to southwest end. In was used for religious services by the Church of Ireland diocese up until the 1950’s, before falling into disuse and disrepair.

The refurbished dining room at Chez Hans, is a wonderful combination of the grand and the intimate, the braggadocio and the subtle. The food is, well, perfect. And has been since the day it opened. One of the first reviews of the new restaurant outlined this is 1969 when it wrote that “there were only a few outstanding restaurants in Ireland,

but Chez Hans fits that description. This small restaurant is situated at the foot of the Rock itself, surely the most unexpected little place in all of the British Isles. It occupies a deserted, unoccupied, unconsecrated Victorian non-conformist chapel.

The Irish light, luminous on the greyest day, streams through the curtainless Gothic windows, and the whole effect it totally and unexpectedly chic”. And that was before the reviewer of Gourmet Magazine has placed a morsel in his mouth!

And that was what really brought the clientele from all over the world, first to Chez Hans, but afterwards kept bringing them back, over and over. The food itself. Hans was a perfectionist, as all good chefs are. He put every ounce of imagination and effort into every plate that went onto a table. It was often spoken of in awe, how the Matthia’s were one of the first people in the town to have a greenhouse in their back garden. For Han’s didn’t need to trust the quality of the herbs he needed for his dishes, when he was growing them himself. For the meats, he would buy in farms as close to Cashel as he could, so that he once again had faith in the providence of the animals that made it to the table. Long before it became a marketing slogan, Hans Matthia know the value of the term from farm to fork, and his customers understood the benefit in each meal.

He also served fish dishes, and then too he would seek out the finest and freshest, often buying from local fishermen who would have their catches barely out of the river or sea, a few hours by the time they were in the kitchen on Moor Lane.

Another of his specialities were his desserts.

Wines from the finest vineyards across both the Old and New World were served to wash down the meals. Though as good as they were, and they were very good, the chef probably laughed at the Irish palate when they would tell him that their favourite drink at the restaurant, was the pint of Guinness served at the front bar, while guests both waited to be seated, and sat afterwards to let the fine food settle. The hidden pub in the town, was regarded as one of the finest pints in Ireland, with the short pour and the convivial surroundings. You paused and waited for your pint to settle, and you did the same with your meal, as there was never a rush in or out of Hans. The very opposite of fast food one might say.

Finally, but most importantly, what made and still makes Chez Hans a fine dining experience, is its staff. Many stayed with Hans for decades, and often came themselves from the old Cashel community around the houses of Dominic Street or Moor Lane. They were proud of their home place, and proud of the fact that a small restaurant on their doorstep was known the world over.

And much of that was down to the staff themselves. Like the best of dining staff, they were always there but never there. Never overbearing, but happy to offer some advice on the menu, to recommend a wine or a dessert. But also a tourist attraction. A pub further down the town where the guest may enjoy their trip to Cashel a few hours longer. A tip to the staff was returned tenfold by the tips back to the diners. Hans and Derry were proud of their staff, treated them well

and looked after them, and that also came out in everything they served.

And with such a fine restaurant, the awards came also. Michelin Guides would annually recommend the food, along with the prestigious Egon Ronay Awards. Failte Ireland and Bord Failte often features the Cashel eatery in its literature and guides the custom in. The zenith however for Hans and his staff, came in 1983, when Chez Hans was recognised by the gold standard of dining awards, and he picked up a famous Michelin Star. At the time Ireland had barely a handful of places that could boast such a recognition, but it was well deserved by the German Irish chef.

In time Hans and Derry had children of their own, three sons, Jason, Stefan and Hansie, and they too walked in the steps of the father, no doubt influenced by seeing how much time and love he put into his kitchen. When Hans retired in 1998, he handed his beloved chapel and utensils over to his son Jason, who now runs the restaurant with his wife Louise, and they still wow their customers with an authentic classic dining experience.

Alas however, Hans and Derry are no longer with us. Derry passed in October 2021 after a short illness, and Hans Peter followed her to his eternal rest in early 2023. But their memory and influence in the town, will long live on. When chef Hans Peter Matthiae and his wife Derry bought Cashel’s Synod Hall, and opened Chez Hans, they began a near 30-year journey that lasted until son Jason and his wife Louise took over.

And they put Cashel on the countries fine dining map. Where it proudly remains to this day.

Cashel student tops the class in whole country with Engineering Award Cashel Community School underscored its excellence in learning once again last week, when one of its 6th year pupils picked up a prestigious engineering award, that put him top of the pile in the country in his Leaving Certificate results last year. The award for Shane Buckley, was the culmination of almost a decade of work by the school. At that time, newly appointed principal Mr John Gallagher came into Cashel Community School and had a vision of driving Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) within the culture of the school.

Along with teachers in the Engineering department, Kian Quinn, Eoin Fitzpatrick and Trevor Galvin, he introduced modules in STEM and Robotics to complement the Engineering subjects already on offer.

This was well received, and students also availed of new

machinery that was bought to drive the innovative subjects, such as new lathes, drills, forming tools, 3D printers and Laser Cutters which allowed greater scope in designing and creating models. Mr Gallagher’s vision came to fruition this year when Shane Buckley from Knockavilla, was awarded the top leaving cert marks in the country for Leaving Certificate Engineering. This is a wonderful achievement for Shane and his Engineering teacher, Mr Fitzpatrick, and an acknowledgement of the constant progress being made to achieve excellence in CCS. Shane will now hope to continue his career in Engineering through college, and will be able to look back on the foresight of a principal who opened the gate for students like him, to succeed. And we look forward to seeing what feats Shane may achieve in the future.

Alanna sang for her county and wowed the nation

Popular Council supervisor retires to concentrate on business persuits Popular local council supervisor John Ryan, hung up his council boots one last time a week ago, when he stood down from his job with Tipperary County Council after just over two decades. John had risen over that time to being the well-known and well-respected general services supervisor, and was often the first port of call when someone needed to contact the council at all hours of the day and night, and in all weathers, Summer and Winter. Despite covering a huge area of West Tipperary, he always ensured that the public got the best possible service and he will be widely missed

for that.

Of course he hasn’t retired for good, rather he will be spending even more time in his other businesses, being the owner of Stove and Fireplace Fitters, the popular home heating business based on the Cahir Road. John recently opened a second store in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, and the expansion of the business was likely another reason that he stepped down from his council role. He has big plans for the future, both in the home heating business and other ventures, and we wish him and his team all the best for the future.

Cashel songstress Alanna Manton was back in front of a national audience last Friday night, when she performed in front of the highest television audience of the year at the Late Late Toy Show. No stranger to the national airwaves, Alanna first came to attention when she performed in the TG4 competition, Junior Eurovision. And the accolades kept coming, when she recently finished at stint in one of the main lead roles at Cashel Community Schools annual musical “Here We Go Again”, featuring the music of ABBA, in the part of Sophie.

But all of those roles paled into comparison with the one last weekend. The Toy Show is more than just a television show.

It is a national institution. A national treasure. And each year, the eyes of the nation turn as over one million people tune in to see what will be the must have gifts for Irish girls and boys this year. And while the toys are the main event, many also tune in to see the wonderful array of singing and dancing talent from all over the country that also makes up a huge part of the production. This is where Alanna came in, when she was part of the ensemble singing the popular GAA ditty “When I Play for the County”. This was entirely appropriate as it was written by the well known Tipperary comedians, The Two Johnny’s, and Alanna was able to proudly fly the Tipperary Blue and Gold throughout the performance.

There’s no doubt but this is unlikely to be the last time we see Alanna on the small, or maybe even, the big screen.

Carrick-on-Suir Road Runners Annual Goal Mile

he annual Goal Mile took place once again this year on Christmas Day with the runners and walkers taking up their starting positions at 11 am.

This year the main sponsors of the goal mile A.I.B. were offering the participants an opportunity to win €1,000 for their local GAA club. Once the runner was registered they could fill out the competition form on the website and you were entered.

The charity GOAL are currently providing humanitarian aid to 13 different countries at the moment and sadly, due to the current global issues their intervention in these countries is needed now more than ever.

The organisers of the event, who were completing their 18th year are deservedly proud of their efforts to date where they had amassed an incredible €94,436.27 prior to this year’s Christmas Day event.

‘Mayo’s finest export’ - we’re blessed to have Marion Landers Memories or Christmas Past on the streets of the town here in Carrick On the Friday before Christmas, one of the finest volunteers that the town of Carrick is lucky to have residing here was once again busy setting up her Christmas Fayre. Marion Landers has spent years highlighting and raising much needed funds for good causes, going so far as building classrooms in Cape Town with the Neill Mellon trust.

A vast array of baked goods, Christmas wreaths and several other festive crafts were on sale to the public from the pop up shop, once again kindly donated by Mr. Pat Power of Bridgwater House. The beneficiaries of this sale of work were once again the local Meals Assistance Service and another charity that is close to Marion’s heart namely The Samaritans.

Over the years Marion and her great bunch of helpers have raised thousands upon thousands for these two charities. In 2023 for the same event a total of over €5,000 was split between both groups.

Marion doesn’t just step up to the mark for the meals assistance group at Christmas time. Every Friday, the groups clients are lucky enough to be given a wonderful taste of Marion’s baking skills as she donates her time, funds and prowess to supplying them with a variety of tasty treats.

Marion is referred to in the kitchen of the meals assistance as Mayo’s finest export and this may well be the case as the group and the town as a whole is so lucky to have her living here.

Many Carrick-on-Suir residents will remember the not too distant past in the run-up to Christmas on the streets of town.

The butcher’s shops with turkeys, plucked and eviscerated, hanging on hooks with dead eyes staring blankly awaiting collection from scarved housewives who had been paying in a “few bob” every week to secure their festive dinner centrepiece. The annual tables outside the now disappeared fruit and veg shops laden down with spuds, sprouts, and an array of root vegetables as well as the seasonal luxuries seldom afforded like pineapples, kiwi fruit and grapes.

Indeed the west end of the town as one approached the narrowing West Gate epitomised this scene where the Keogh/Hogan family traded for three generations proudly displayed their renowned fresh meat products and next door one could fill up on all of the trimmings thanks to a fruit and veg shop run by Ita Crowley.

The men of the town were of course not forgotten on this little corner of the town as there was at least five public places in the vicinity where they

could whet their whistle while waiting for their spouse to do the important work.

Going further back however many may not be aware of the employment bonanza that occurred just down from the West Gate at the end of Lough Street. Every year Mr Patrick Kirby gave seasonal gainful employment to around three hundred men and women, providing a much needed income to many struggling families.

The number of fowl that passed through the streets of our town at that time were truly amazing. On 11th December, 1911 alone for example 1,000 chickens were exported across the Irish sea.

In that year in terms of turkey exports, 100 tons of slaughtered turkeys left the area of Carrick thanks to Patrick Kirby’s business. Local reports confirm extra railway porters having to be employed to cater for the vast numbers.

It’s hard to comprehend the vastness of the numbers that once left the town’s streets over a hundred years ago but it is certain that the employment created by the seasonal bonus was a much welcomed influx of finance for many families.

Once again the event was a great success and the organisers express their thanks to everyone who assisted in any way.

Over €7 million paid out in Power Up Scheme to Tipp SME’s Fine Gael TD Michael Murphy has announced that €7,216,000 has been paid out in County Tipperary as part of the Power Up Scheme. The Power Up Scheme was announced as part of Budget 2025, and during the month of December, €153 million has been paid out nationwide, with many based in Tipperary benefitting.

Deputy Murphy said, “I was delighted to learn from my colleague Minister Peter Burke that almost €400 million has been paid this year to SMEs right across the country under the Power Up Grant and the Increased Cost of Business Scheme. In December alone, just 8 weeks after the Power Up scheme was announced, €7,216,000 has been paid to 1804 local businesses in County Tipperary.

“I know from dealing with local businesses that these grants have been of great support to SMEs, many of which are facing rising costs due to increases in electricity and other inflationary pressures. 38,000 businesses in the hospitality, retail and beauty sectors received the Power Up grant, including 1804 businesses in County Tipperary. Each eligible business received a €4,000 grant during the month of December, paid directly into their bank account and assisting with the pre-Christmas trading period.

and Employment Peter Burke said “The Increased Cost of Business Scheme and the Power Up Grant have been hugely successful this year. We have paid out €400 million this year alone to businesses across the country. This is a significant amount of money that has been directly targeted at

our small, family-run businesses, that have a rates bill of under €30,000. These businesses are the backbone of our local economies and our communities.

“When Taoiseach Simon Harris took office in April this year, he prioritised support for our small businesses. I announced the SME package in June, with the Power Up Scheme established as part of Budget 2025.

This scheme, which closed for applications on November 22nd, has now paid out €153 million to small businesses in December alone.

Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail Emer Higgins said, “The €400 million paid out to our SMEs this year highlights that Fine Gael in Government is listening to businesses and is very aware of the challenges being faced by business owners. That is why my Department has focused on getting the Power Up Grant payments out to businesses as quickly as possible this year; within 8 weeks of the scheme being announced, with payments commencing 10 days after the scheme was closed to applications.

Minister Burke concluded, “As government negotiations progress, we are fighting to ensure our small business are supported and that any agreement on a programme for government contains further concrete measures to assist our SMEs”.

There has been a noticeable trend over the last year whereby those children engaging with Childline are at extremely high risk of harm. Sadly, such stark revelations come as no surprise to the dedicated team of staff and volunteers at ISPCC. Speaking on St Stephen’s Day, Elizabeth Donlon Fox, National Childline Listening Co-ordinator said: “Our data reveals that 26th, December,

will be one of the busiest days of the year for our team of staff and volunteers at Childline, and we expect that over 250 children and young people will reach out to us today because of something that has happened to

them over Christmas.”

John Church, CEO, ISPCC said: “For too many children and young people, Christmas simply doesn’t happen. They turn to Childline for support, and our amazing staff and volunteers are there for them 24/7 over Christmas, as they are throughout the year. We depend on donations for up to 90% of the funding which keeps us listening 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

“Without this help, we would not be able to be here for every child who needs us.”

Additional statistics from Ireland’s only 24/7 listening service for children and young people revealed: Fifty children a year are in the process of trying to take their own life while on the phone to the Childline team.

Over 200 actively suicidal children have contacted Childline during the last year The Childline team has had 1,300 suicide-related contacts over the past 12 months Too many children and young people don’t have the Christmas that they dream of and deserve. Cahir Tidy Towns Our Can collection went ahead last Saturday morning to get rid of the Christmas clutter. Thank you to all those who brought cans for recycling in our Cans for Trees Project in collaboration with ABP Food Group.

The group would like to thank everyone who supported them in the run up to Christmas in Santas Grotto and also at the parade.

There was lot of storm damage along the Swiss Walk in recent weeks but thankfully some have donated and planted Chestnut trees to replace the broken and old, decaying ones.

Please note that many Christmas Lights were also damaged beyond repair and will need a significant boost in funding next year so there is still time to donate. We hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and hope to see you out there walking off the turkey on our lovely walks.

The Cahir Development Christmas Retail support programme in conjunction with Tipperary County Council started on December 2 and continued until Friday December 13. During those 2 weeks 3 x €50 vouchers were given out every day to people who shop in Cahir (from Monday December 9 to Friday December 13, 2024) and many till receipts arrived into the Business & Training Centre up to the closing date. This programme enabled Cahir Development to give back €1,500 to the traders of the town as a thank you for their ongoing support while also giving vouchers for local shops to those who shopped local and supported Cahir Traders too.

St Stephen’s Day Wren in aid of for Church defibrillator Cahir Some people got together before Christmas and decided to do the ‘Wran’ to raise funds for a defibrillator that is needed for St. Marys Church in Cahir.

With a cardiac incident taking place in the Church recently and the subsequent use of a defibrillator borrowed from Cahir Park AFC closeby, it was decided that the Church really needs to have one on site. This fundraiser was initially the initiative of the Cailini le Cheile, but Cahir Women’s shed, Daughters of Dún Iascaigh, Cahir to Sing and many others from the audience on the day, as well as some parishioners joined them to take part in this annual tradition in aid of a great cause. Great fun had by all on St. Stephens Day in the Castle Car Park with €915.00 raised so far and money still coming in. All Monies raised will go towards the purchase of a Defibrillator for St. Mary’s Church. Well done to all involved.

There was no winner of the Community Lotto Draw that took place last week on Wednesday December 11, 2024. The Draw was witnessed by Leo Coffey. The numbers drawn were 7, 8, 14 & 18. Cahir Bears Childcare Centre get a visit from Santa

All the children had a great morning on the Monday before Christmas when Santa came to visit on his sleigh. A massive thank you goes to Santa and his driver Peter for visiting Cahir Bears on Monday, all the children enjoyed the festivities upon Santa’s arrival with the help of his four elves.

A big thank you also goes to a parent of the service who donated the beautiful Christmas balloon arch too which was displayed at the service on the day. Cahir Bears Childcare facility would like to extend their thanks to everyone involved in the magical visit.

Live Crib at St Mary’s Church, Cahir On Saturday, December 21 from 4 to 8pm there was a live crib set up outside St. Marys Church in Cahir. With Christmas only days away and despite strong winds and rain the Servant sisters of the home of the Mother organised this special event. There was an array of farm animals on site much to the visiting families delight and all under cover from the elements.

Children had great fun petting the donkey,

calves and sheep and Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate were served in Parish Rooms during that time making it a wonderful event that showed what Christmas is all about.

Lots of people came along and also went into the church to light a candle, say a prayer and there was some lovely carol singing too. The Nativity Scene in the Church was much admired and a very special evening was had by all.

Enjoying Ukrainian Christmas at Cahir Day Care Centre were Andra, Nik and Natalia

Cahir Development Association and South Tipperary Development Company united to begin a new Christmas Tradition in Cahir when on Sunday, December 15, Cahir Development Association and South Tipperary Development Company hosted their very first Irish Ukrainian Christmas Celebration which was held in the Day Care Centre from 2pm – 5.30pm. The Day Care Centre was bustling with activity on the day as Ukrainian families and Irish families came together to share their Christmas Traditions and a most wonderful day was enjoyed by all.

This project was made possible by the incredible collaboration between Cahir Development Association and South Tipperary Development Company, and this festive gathering was a true display of community, unity, and culture. Our sincere and heartfelt thank you to all our amazing vol-

unteers who made it possible and to everyone who contributed to making this celebration so special: Olena and Anastasiya for the wonderful craft workshops, Mykola for the delicious Ukrainian food, Roman from Sunshine Balloons for beautifully decorating Santa’s house, Ukrainian musicians & Rockwell Music Academy, Tipperary County Council and South Tipperary Development Company. Everyone came together to create a wonderful and newly established joyful event on the Christmas social calendar in Cahir.

Cahir Development Association was delighted to be part of such a unique event and look forward to working and celebrating with our Ukrainian friends in 2025. This was only the beginning, so let’s continue to celebrate unity, diversity, and the power of coming together.

Cahir Park AFC Juniors and Youths join up for training - It was a great experience for our Youths on Monday, December 23 to train against our Junior players in the last training session of the year as it will help them progress to the next step into junior soccer.

Thanks to Keith and his management team and the youth players for giving up their time off on their holidays to train on the morning at 10 am.

Cahir First Team had a mixture of First and B Team players on the morning and it was good to see everyone work together for the future of the club. The Management team got an insight to our Youths first hand and can see the improvements in the panel from preseason to date, with great work carried out from all involved in our youth teams. All the lads had soup and sandwiches after training and a great morning was had by all.

We saw the same mixture of the First Team and Youths train on the evening of December 28 too and on the all weather to brush off the Christmas excess and a great training session was had by all.

Referee Beginners Course - FAI South Tipperary will run a Tipperary Referee Beginners Course on February 15, 2025 in Cahir Park AFC. Times are 10am to 4pm. Euan Murray is ‘Munster Minor Hurler of the Year’ Congratulations to Dúrlas Óg and Thurles Sarsfields player Euan Murray who was named Munster Minor Hurler of the Year at the recent Munster GAA Awards.

Euan, son of Pat and Colette Murray, Knockeen, Thurles played a pivotal role in Tipperary winning the Munster and All-Ireland minor hurling titles following a series of wonderful performances in attack and midfield. His score-getting ability was a crucial aspect of Tipperary’s stunning victory over Kilkenny in the final in UPMC Nowlan Park, despite being down to 13 men

for more than half the game, and having to endure extra time also.

Tipperary had many heroes on that night, but Euan’s performance was noteworthy for the maturity and calmness he displayed in the red heat of battle.

Thurles CBS enjoy pre-Christmas exchange and training camp at St Mary’s CBS, Belfast St Mary’s CBS in Belfast was delighted to host their fellow ERST school Thurles CBS for an exchange prior to the Christmas break.

Following their progression to the Harty Cup quarter-finals, coach Niall Cahill reached out with the proposal of a training camp for their senior squad of 52 players and five support staff at the Glen Road campus.

Beginning in the afternoon with some words of encouragement in pursuit of their Harty Cup dream, former Antrim hurling captain Neil McManus urged the boys to “have no ceiling” and noted the importance of establishing a culture of excellence, accountability and ambition.

The Tipperary lads played a game against St Mary’s Foresters Cup squad and had a training session on the school pitches. The Thurles men were impressed with the floodlit ball wall, 4G, S&C suite and Swimming pool making full use of all St Mary’s had to offer.

Following dinner, the boys were given an insight into the wider work of the Edmund Rice network and promoting Edmund Rice values in the field of social justice, particularly around home-

lessness. A session with Cormac MacAirt of the Westcourt Centre placed some stark and sobering statistics around the issue.

The CBS Thurles hurling squad had hosted a “bake sale” in their school and presented Cormac with a hugely generous contribution of £1000 to the outreach work with the homeless in Belfast.

To that end the full squad and staff had a ‘sleep-out’ in solidarity with the message.

Day two began with an early morning run around the St Mary’s

site and breakfast, thereafter a visit to the original school site in Barrack St, followed by a peace wall and mural tour focussing on the conflict and history of the Falls and West Belfast area.

Great emphasis was placed on the determination of the Christian Brothers and Gaels of Belfast to promote Gaelic games in a period of oppression and danger.

The lads returned to their St Mary’s base and were addressed by Principal McComb.

An exchange of gifts, shirts and memorabilia cemented the burgeoning relationship.

A reciprocal visit to Tipperary is the exciting promise to the St Mary’s hurlers.

This whirlwind visit emphasizes all that is positive in Edmund Rice centred education.

The late Alice Hogan was a star of the Thurles stage and Thurles Golf Club

T

HURLES bade a fond farewell to one of its leading ladies recently with the passing of ninety-year-old Alice Hogan - a star of the stage, the tennis court, the golf course and the bridge table, amongst many others.

Alice, of Parnell Street, Thurles grew up in Fianna Road where life was happy, full of activities and mischief, and evolved around sport. She was a member of the highly esteemed and well-known Curran family and she did much in her own life to carry on the great regard locally for that family.

Alice was a very accomplished tennis player and her exploits on the court were well recognised as she grew into adulthood and amassed trophies and awards with ease. She would continue to play tennis until well into her later years and the style and grace she showed on the court matched perfectly her style and elegance off the court.

Indeed, Alice carried this style onto the golf course too where she became one of the finest golfers in Thurles Golf Club after her tennis days ended. She had a hugely competitive streak and this ensured that she strived for perfection in all her disciplines, pushing herself hard to be as good as she could be.

Alice was blessed with a marvellous voice and her contribution to the Thurles Cathedral Choir and Thurles Musical Society was enormous. She performed with the choir for over seventy years with the Tuesday evening rehearsal being a staple of her life for all of that time. She rarely missed

Of course with such style, elegance and a wonderful voice, Alice was much sought after on the stage and her many roles with Thurles Musical Society offered plenty of evidence as to her enormous talents. She had a huge stage

presence and playing leading roles from the mid sixties to the early eighties, she became one of the best well known performers in the country. Key roles included; Nelly Forbush in South Pacific; Cera Angelique in The Belle of New York; Valencienne in The Merry Widow; Gretchen in The Student Prince; Winnie Tate in Annie Get Your Gun; Julie Jordan in Carousel; Laurie in Oklahoma; Polly

Of course, Alice featured in the chorus for many years too and when her stage days came to an end she became centrally involved in front of house and in any other facet where she was required. She was always one of the main organisers of the Society golf classic; she would seek advertising and patronage for the annual show; and she was a great lady to sell raffle tickets and seek prizes whenever asked.

All of this was undertaken with a style and ease which endeared Alice to the multitudes. She was conferred Honorary Life Membership of TMS and Vice President in 2009 and she worked on committee for many years as she sought to advance the fortunes of the Cathedral Town institution which has entertained so many since its foundation in 1950.

Alice took to the game of bridge in more recent times and she also joined the Horse and Jockey Singers where her talents were once again very welcome. The common theme though in all her pursuits was engaging with people. Alice was a real people person. She kept her friends close; remained connected to them throughout her life; and was able to make new friends across all generations with no trouble at all.

She was also a wonderful neighbour to all those in Parnell Street and when the time came for her to require assistance, her neighbours were not found wanting - she loved dining in Noel Ryan’s across the road from her home and was

Home Instead carers also provided wonderful assistance to Alice when she required it most.

Speaking of family, Alice was a kind, dedicated and committed mother who kept her children close to her heart at all times. She was a doting grandmother too and passed on many of her own characteristics to them. She knew the pain of loss only too well, but always maintained a stoic outlook and continued to move forward as befitting a person of her standing in the community where she was held in such high regard and esteem. Testimony to that esteem was the large attendance which turned out to pay their final respects and say farewell to a lady of substance.

It was fitting that the Cathedral Choir, together with members of Thurles Musical Society, performed at Alice’s funeral Mass in the Cathedral of the Assumption.

Guards of Honour from Thurles Golf Club, the Cathedral Choir and Thurles Musical Society were formed before and after the celebration of her long and busy life before Alice was conveyed to St Patrick’s Cemetery where she was laid to rest ‘neath her native soil.

Alice Hogan will be greatly missed in Thurles. But, her five children JJ, John, Margaret, Paul and Aileen will miss her most of all as will her sons and daughters-in law; sisters and brothers-in-law; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; grand nieces; grand nephews; cousins; great neighbours and a wide circle of friends, including the excellent staff of Noel Ryan’s Pub. In Carousel, Alice sang You’ll Never Walk Alone -in life she never did, with her friends by her side. Now, she is reunited with her many friends who have gone before her. May the fairways and footlights of Heaven greet her as a star is reborn to eternal life.

Rehearsals for TMS’s Hot Mikado start 7th January Rehearsals for the March production of Hot Mikado begin on 7th January, 2025 and all are welcome to come along. Musical Director Mary Rose McNally alongside Dance Captain, Siobhan King will be on hand to kick start the fun with Director Oliver Hurley set to recommence his work with role players having already undertaken a number of sessions before Christmas.

Hot Mikado is a brilliantly up-lifting, up-tempo and funny musical which is certain to bring great joy to participants and to the audience as well. There will be great fun in rehearsal and with the show set to open in the Premier Hall on Tuesday, 25th March running until Saturday March 29th it will be a very busy time, but well worth it.

Rehearsals begin at 8 pm- venue to be advised.

Una Crowley and Pat Donnelly from Thurles Lions club visited the Presentation Secondary School this week to collect six fantastic hampers that helped brighten six families’ Christmas time with their children and loved ones.

A big thank you to all the students for their thoughtful response to the needs of others at Christmas. Well done to the three 6th year Student Council representatives Juliette Purcell, Aine Devitt and a special mention to Emma Spillane who put the wheels in motion for this worthy cause.

Damien Ruth Tournament another huge success The Damien Ruth Memorial Soccer Tournament was another huge success this year with players from all over the county involved yet again.

The tournament, which commenced in 2014 is in memory of Damien Ruth, a young Clonmelman who sadly died suddenly from a condition known as SADS – Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

Every year the tournament raises much needed funds for the charity CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young. The CRY Centre, based in Tallaght, Dublin, raises awareness of the condition known as SADS, provides free counselling and support for families and friends affected by sudden death and also provides free heart screening for families and individuals.

Organisers Gerry Cunningham, Ronan Walsh and the Ruth family thanked everyone who has played in the tournament since its inception.

This year will be the last tournament and after 10 hugely successful years, Amy Ruth

said her family were so grateful to everyone who made the tournament an annual tradition that many players and spectators enjoy. “There is always a fantastic sense of community on the day and there is always a generous amount raised, which is gratefully received by the charity,” she said.

“We would like to thank every player who has played in the tournament from the younger players to those who are now too old to play. Everyone who helped with making food, Clonmel Town Football Club have been fantastic to us, providing their facilities and never taking money, Ronan Walsh who has sponsored the tournament from the start, it has been amazing having Ronan on board, and of course Gerry Cunningham who has organised the tournament every year.

“Everyone who has lost someone close to them will know how difficult it is at Christmas time. This tournament has given my family something to focus on and it has really helped us,” said Amy.

“States must live up to their obligations under International Humanitarian Law regarding the protection of civilians and provision of aid” was the call from Dónal Gorman, Communications and Advocacy Manager with Médecins Sans Frontières - Doctors Without Borders (MSF), when he addressed the Tipperary Peace Convention ‘Reflections for Christmas’ event at the Tipperary Excel in Tipperary Town on Monday, 9th December.

A wide range of speakers contributed to the event including Dónal Gorman from MSF, Hon. Secretary of Tipperary Peace Convention, Martin Quinn, former Minister for State, Dr. Martin Mansergh, Mr. Guy Jones of the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation and the Ambassador of Palestine, Dr. Jilan Abdalmajid. Music and song was provided by the St. Ailbe’s School Choir from Tipperary Town and the Rockwell Music Academy. The event was supported by TASK Community Care (Main Sponsor) and by Tipperary County Council (Programme).

A number of presentation were made

to mark 40 years of the Tipperary International Peace Award (1984 - 2024).

Making the presentations Martin Quinn said that peace is not just the absence of war; “peace is in the heart, in the home, in the community, it is institutions and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies and it is freedom from war and conflict. It is also about creating peace through enduring relationships and through communities living free from civil disturbance. The presentations today reflect the sense of peace that comes from music and song, dialogue, sporting activity and community spaces. Those that we are honour today are contributors to the theme and state of peace through the various aspects of their lives. It is a statement that peace can be found wherever people come together in respect, serenity, cordiality and mutual understanding”.

Dr. Martin Mansergh, Tipperary - For Promoting Peace through dialogue 5. Rockwell Music Academy, Rockwell - For Promoting Peace through Music and Song In his address to the ceremony, Dónal Gorman said that this event celebrates and promotes peace but that in many of the locations where MSF provides surgery, healthcare and humanitarian assistance, peace remains a remote concept for the people their teams treat. “The ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Syria, Democratic Republic of Congo, to name but a few, are displacing record numbers of people, as war injuries, disease and chronic health conditions take a deadly toll on communities and tests the ability of health systems to be able to cope. Across the board, the humanitarian responses we are involved with are facing

significant challenges in trying to meet the level of need that exists. Not only do logistical and security challenges impede people’s ability to seek medical care, but humanitarian aid is often weaponised and sometimes strategically blocked from reaching the people who need it most to survive”.

“In many locations where we work, civilians are killed and injured, including medical staff. Ambulances and hospitals along with civilian infrastructure are repeatedly hit. In some locations the ‘rules of war’ intended to protect civilians, medical staff and humanitarians, seem to be non-existent. In these challenging contexts, our ability to provide healthcare to communities relies not only on having fully equipped and well-skilled medical teams on the ground, but also on the acceptance of our work by warring parties.

We rely on this acceptance by state and non-state actors for us to carry out our mandate to provide neutral, independent, impartial medical care to whoever needs it, regardless of race, religion, ideology or

allegiances. More than ever we need states to live up to their obligations under International Humanitarian Law regarding the protection of civilians and provision of aid. This demand should not be seen as an aspirational slogan, but needs to be a reality, whereby humanitarians can operate safely to provide vital medical care in conflicts”.

In concluding Mr. Gorman said that “as we gather here to reflect on peace, we urge those with power or influence who see the benefits of peace to continue its promotion and to persuade others who don’t.

And if peace is not possible. Then we demand that humanity is upheld during times of conflict. Warring parties must meet their obligations pertaining to the protection of civilians and the unimpeded provision of humanitarian assistance.

Furthermore, we demand that civilians, medical workers and humanitarians are not a target. Where peace is not possible.

We must then work to mitigate the impact that conflict has. For MSF this is the provision of vital medical care”.

Saint George’s, Mitchelstown an €800,000 church investment making sweet music and more

A

new lease of life has been given to a former Church of Ireland parish church in Mitchelstown, which is attracting audiences from Tipperary as well as Cork, Limerick and as far afield as Dublin, Athlone and Galway. Established in 2019, Saint George’s Arts and Heritage Centre organises two performance events every month, as well as hosting exhibitions during the summer months and ceremonies such as civic weddings and events including history conferences.

In the past five years, since purchasing the building, the four-member board of directors, who are all volunteers, have saved the building which was put up for sale by the Church of Ireland at the end of 2018.

Not only is it situated in the centre of Mitchelstown, but the town is in the centre of Munster and less than an hour’s drive from Cork, Clonmel and Limerick. The centre’s patron’s include the Dublin-Tipperary based actor, Patrick Bergin.

It was in a very poor state when the group bought the building in April 2019.

Previously, the small aging group of parishioners have been unable to do much with the building in over 30 years. By 2019, it had thirty leaks in the roof, plaster was falling off the walls and an air of damp and cold dominated the atmosphere inside.

But all that changed through the investment of over €800,000 in the building, which has led to it becoming the premier venue of its kind in North Cork.

Through grant aid and generous donations, €250,000 has been spent on a new roof, and the most recent

grant from the Department of Rural Development has led to the installation of a €95,000 state-of-the-art heating system. This has given the centre a level of comfort that seemed unimaginable five years ago.

Other major works have included making the building disability accessible, which was one of the priority projects from the very beginning. Other works have included restoring all original seating and providing them with comfortable cushioning, as well as restoring all external doors and several windows.

‘We got involved in this project because we wanted to save the building,’ explains its chairman, Bill Power. ‘Three of the directors are heritage enthusiasts, which means we have worked closely with all relevant agencies to ensure that conservation works are done to the highest possible standard and with taste.

Becuause of our approach, we have been able to work very closely with several agencies, including Cork County Council, which has been incredibly supportive of the project’.

Over the past five years, the venue has hosted events from such talented performers as Rebecca Storm, Jon Kenny, Frances Black, Red Hurley, Liam O Maoinlaoi, David MacSavage and Seán Keane. Between now and April, it’s going to have nine shows with performers such as Emma Langford (25th January), Declan Sinnott (7th March) and Paddy Cullivan (12th April). There will also be concerts with local entertainers and lots of other shows have already been booked for the rest of the year. Tickets can be

booked via Eventbrite. The centre is also on Facebook and Instagram.

Their most recent concert was when over 70 singers from thirty countries sung in 14 languages during a show organised in association with the Fermoy International Choir. Other choirs to have performed there have included the Lismore Choir and the Bel Canto Choir, as well as classical musicians, local bands such as The Fogues and Before the Ghost.

Among its biggest annual events is the Mitchelstown Christmas Market which attracts craftspeople and shoppers from all over mid-Munster. This year, it hosted the ‘Robinson Homecoming,’ which involves over 100 Canadian families coming to Ireland to mark the bi-centenary of the ‘Robinson Expedition’ when over 2,000 people from North Cork, South Limerick and South Tipperary emigrated to Canada.

Saint George’s is also a beautiful venue for civic weddings, and is enjoying an increasing demand from couples seeking a combination of character, history and a sense of ‘forever’. It has also been designated as the visitor centre for the ‘Georgian Quarter,’ which is part of Cork County Council’s plans to revitalise Mitchelstown’s town centre as part of a plan to develop tourism in North Cork through heritage developments at Mallow Castle, Annesgrove Gardens and Doneraile House and Park.

Looking to the year ahead, the chairman said that although the centre has borrowings of €125,000, it is on a sound financial footing. The four-member Board of Directors are also looking to expand the number of volunteers with a view to hosting other activities in the centre.

New Community Bus service launched in Tipperary Town A new Community Bus service was launched in Tipperary Town recently. The initiative is being led

by An Garda Síochána in collaboration with Tipperary Town Revitalisation and Knockanrawley Resource Centre.

The 17-seater bus will be driven

by Gardaí from Tipp Town Station and made available to community and special interest groups on a book-ahead basis. The service will focus primarily on disadvantaged groups and is expected to be of huge benefit to many local organisations, as well as playing an important role in Community Policing.

The project partners were granted €55,000 towards the purchase of the vehicle by Tipperary County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Community Recognition Fund, with the balance of the cost of the vehicle raised through philanthropy.

Speaking at the recent launch event Superintendent Eddie Golden welcomed the initiative. “I am delighted that An Garda Síochána were included at the beginning of this initiative and this bus will be a vital asset in providing a service to the local communities in Tipperary Town and the Community Engagement area of Tipperary Central for the years to come. Providing this service will give us a great opportunity to enhance our existing links with the community and provide a service to those most in need. I wish to thank all those agencies who were involved in bringing this project to life” said the Superintendent.

Parish Church Lotto Draw Results

Fethard Annual Carol Service was overflowing with festive cheer Holy Trinity Church of Ireland was overflowing with festive cheer and good fellowship at the annual Carol Service on Sunday, December 22. A packed congregation of over 230 people mostly made up of people from the local community came along to sing Christmas carols, listen to music, hear the readings, and enjoy hospitality laid on by the parishioners. The church was adorned with candles, cones and seasonal greenery which befitted the ambience of the Medieval Church.

The service was due to be taken

by Heidi Good from Kilkenny but unfortunately, she proved positive in a Covid test that afternoon, so we greatly appreciated that her father stepped in at the last moment to lead the service.

The congregation were delighted that the Strappe family of traditional musicians, came along to perform a combination of Christmas carols and songs which had some of the congregation singing along. Fethard Choral Society with musical director Ann Barry were also present, and sang beautiful renditions of the Little Drummer Boy, God’s Gift at Christmas and O Holy Night,

There was no jackpot winner in this week’s Parish Lotto on Thursday, December 19, 2024. The numbers drawn were 8, 14, 15, and 19.

The death has occurred on Tuesday, 24th December, 2024, of Antra Kistochkina, Coolmore, Fethard, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family and friends, in the excellent care of the staff of St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, after a long and courageous battle with illness.

Beloved wife of Sergiy Kistochkin, devoted mother to Adriana and Daniel, cherished daughter of Dzintra and Arnis, daughter-in-law of Tamara and Victor, much loved sister of Ingus, and sister-in-law of Yuriy and Vitaly. She was a loving aunt to her nephew Markus and nieces Toma and Sofia.

Antra will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her

heartbroken husband, children, parents, brother, godsons, extended family, neighbours and friends. Funeral Mass took place at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard, on Sunday, 29th December, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Friends of Tipperary Football hosts hugely successful draw night - A Fox pulled a heifer out of the hat headed to Laois A delightful evening was held at the Annacarty Community Centre as the Friends of Tipperary Football hosted a successful draw night on Wednesday, 18th December 18 featuring a heifer and calf kindly sponsored by Con Quinn.

The event, masterfully led by MC Anthony Shelley, welcomed guests and marked the occasion with a speech from Martin Dwyer, the newly elected chairman of the Friends of Tipperary Football. Martin expressed heartfelt

gratitude to all attendees, as well as those who sold and purchased tickets to support the initiative. Sandra English, the Public Relations Officer, took a moment to reflect on the history of the Friends of Tipperary Football, praising the dedicated committee members for their relentless efforts.

In a touching acknowledgement, she quoted, “Behind every great man is a great woman,” paying tribute to the unwavering support of Con Quinn’s wife, Trish. The evening featured an

engaging discussion between Anthony Shelley and Philly Ryan, the newly appointed Senior Tipperary football manager. Ryan reminisced about the evolution of the sport since his playing days and shared his excitement about working with the fresh squad he has put together.

The draw itself was an exciting affair, with Con Quinn spinning the draw drum while Brian Fox pulled the winning tickets. Special thanks were extended to C-Saw for providing the ga-

zebo throughout the months and to St. Michael’s for the drum.

In closing, Anthony Shelley expressed his gratitude to everyone involved and offered a strong endorsement of Con Quinn’s generosity. He emphasized the significant positive impact that the proceeds from the event would have on underage football in Tipperary.

Results: A 9-hole Christmas Scramble was held on Wednesday, 18th December. The competition was won by our Lady Captain, Elaine Winston, Marion O’Neill, Vice-Captain and Antoinette Dougan (36pts c/b). Second place went to Bobbi Holohan, Ann Boyle and Deirdre Hannigan (36pts) and in third place, Sinead Corbett, Helena Wade and Anita Hegarty (37pts). Congratulations to all who participated.

LADIES GOLF: Outgoing Lady captain Mary O’Donnell and incoming Lady Captain Marie Graves made a presentation of €700 to The South Tipperary Hospice Movement recently. This money was collected by the Tuesday morning ladies group organised by Pauline Tracey and is an annual affair originally started by Dor Hannigan.

Our Tuesday morning ladies celebrated the Christmas festivities last Tuesday with a scramble on the back nine and then into the club house for some mulled wine and soup. There was plenty of lucky dips for everyone. The winning team was Hanora Cahill Connery, Elizabeth Hayes, Anette Hunt and Niamh Dwan.

Keith blows ‘full time’ after 35 years of refereeing Sunday, December 14 may have brought the curtain down on the Tipperary GAA Club Calendar for 2024, it also saw popular GAA official Keith Delahunty (Moyle Rovers) blow full-time on his refereeing career after an impressive 35 years of dedicated service to the Association.

Having taken charge of the FBD Insurance County Under 21 ‘B’ Football Final at Fethard Town Park on the day, between eventual winners Boherlahan/Du-

alla and Eire Og/Sean Treacy’s, Keith has decided, at 58 years of age, that it is time to give the well-worn whistle a fully-deserved rest.

First introduced to refereeing by fellow Moyle Rovers clubman Jimmy McCarthy during the 1980’s, Keith has served the Gaelic Athletic Association, and also the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, with much distinction over the decades. On Sunday last members of his immediate family, and friends, were in attendance to make sure he got all the big calls right and to relax and enjoy the occasion when the final game was safely put to bed.

football final, Keith said he was “very happy to have given those years to refereeing both hurling and football, but also happy now to be moving on from it. I was going to finish up this time last year, but decided to give one last year to it and I am glad I did that. I enjoyed it, but a time comes for everything and everyone...”, he said.

Sporting sages often remark that a good referee is someone who goes unnoticed on the playing pitch, doing his job properly, without ever drawing attention to himself. And in a strictly professional way as a referee, the well-liked Keith Delahunty has certainly done that, time and time again.

Quickly reflecting on his career as a referee after Sunday’s game, two of the highlights that came immediately to mind for him were refereeing the County Tipperary Senior Hurling Final in 2010 when Thurles Sarsfields lifted the Dan Breen Cup after defeating Clonoulty/Rossmore in the final at Semple Stadium. Another highlight was officiating at the 2010 All-Ireland Ladies Gaelic Football senior final in which Dublin defeated Tyrone at Croke Park.

All associated with GAA in the county, and far beyond, join in thanking Keith for his 35 years of service and wish him all the best for the future.

Golden/Kilfeacle bridged a 28-year gap to claim the Shane Hennessy Ltd Agri & Business Consultancy West Senior Football Championship title for 2024 when defeating Galtee Rovers in an exciting contest under lights at Annacarty on Friday evening, 20th December. This was a tough physical battle as neither side was willing to give an inch with both teams’ intent on claiming the O’Carroll Cup. Aaron Colohan’s goal in injury time sealed the win for Golden/Kilfeacle a direct opposite to their County semi-final meeting a few months previous which saw Darren McGarth goal deep in injury time to break Golden/ Kilfeacle hearts and send Galtee Rovers through to the County Intermediate final.

The opening quarter was a far cry from how the final result would pan out with goals from Evan Kennedy and Darren McGrath giving Galtee Rovers a seven point lead by the quarter mark and looking on course for victory. A Sam Hall penalty seven minutes before the break somewhat resurrected Golden/ Kilfeacle’s chances and from there to the break the teams traded points with Darren McGrath and Sam Hall to the fore to leave just three between the

sides at the interval. The second half was a niggly affair as Galtee Rovers continue to hold the edge. Golden/Kilfeacle were reduced to fourteen heading into the final quarter. When Darren McGrath had pointed Galtee Rovers back two ahead with three on clock it looked as if they may hold on with the numerical advantage. However, Golden/ Kilfeacle would stage a late smash and grab with two goals in three minutes from Niall Heffernan and Aaron Colohan to go four ahead. Darren McGrath did pull one back however the Golden/Kilfeacle defence held tough to see out the game.

It was the eight minute before the games first score arrived.

Golden/Kilfeacle had two efforts wide at the car park end up to this point but it was at the far end that the games first score arrived. Robbie Byron’s effort for a point was half blocked but fell into the path of the on running Evan Kennedy who got a touch to deflect the ball away from the goalkeeper and into the net.

Darren McGrath who had been a threat from the start added a point. Just before the break Darren McGrath won the ball out in the corner at the dressing room end before taking on his man and kicking a powerful effort to the Jack Currivan’s right for Galtee Rovers second goal.

and looked in control. It took Golden/Kilfeacle a while to find their feet and it was the twentieth minute before Sam Hall registered their first point from a free. Three minutes later Sam Hall converted a penalty when Jack Leamy had been brought down. It was a crucial score to the eventual winners back in the game. The concession of the goal looked to be slightly offset when Adam McGrath and Darren McGrath kicked a point each however a now more confident Golden/Kilfeacle finished with points from Sam Hall (free) and Gavin Dalton ensured just a goal between the sides at the break, 2-3 to 1-3.

The second half was niggly and free ridden. Darren McGrath extended Galtee Rovers effort with a point in the opening minute on the resumption however corner back Daithi Bargary not unaccustomed to making runs up the field responded

Niall Hefferan reacted quickest to send the ball low past Robbie McGrath. Following a Galtee Rovers attack, Golden/Kilfeacle turned over possession which resulted in Sam Hall putting Aaron Colohan in on goal and he made no mistake to effectively seal the win. Golden/Kilfeacle had Cian Ryan dismissed late on and while Darren McGrath reduced the deficit to three, the Golden/Kilfeacle defence held tough to take the title.

Golden/Kilfeacle continued to look more threatening and Robbie McGrath came to Galtee Rovers rescue with a fine save. In the eleventh minute Jack Leamy went low for goal from a free but his effort was blocked. Sam Hall and Jack Leamy had the deficit at the minimum heading into the final quarter. They could have been ahead when Shane Stapleton just on the field found himself one on one with Robbie McGrath but the latter came to the rescue of his side. Golden/ Kilfeacle played most of the final quarter with 14 following the dismissal of Jack Dalton. Scorers were still hard to come by and it was the twenty seventh minute before Darren McGrath extended Galtee Rovers advantage to two. by JOHN O’SHEA at Dillon Quirke GAA Ground Clonoulty Aherlow Gaels are the McGrath Oil West Under 21B Football champions for the third time, following their seven point victory over the Eire Og / Sean Treacys combination at a cold and damp Dillon Quirke GAA Ground Clonoulty on Saturday night, 21st December.

Played before a small but enthusiastic crowd, the winners were far more clinical in attack, with Liam Carew putting in a huge shift. Two goals inside the opening quarter was the foundation for this victory, while goalkeeper Joe Howard denied the combination with two top class saves during the opening half. They were solid down the spine, with captain Diarmuid Looby pivotal in the centre of their defence. Cillian Barlow and Darragh O’Brien worked the middle third to good effect while in attack Sean Bourke and Gary Quirke combined well with man of the match Liam Carew.

Eire Og / Sean Treacys were always chasing the game and their inability to put away a few goal chances, two in particular during

the opening 30 minutes, didn’t help their cause. They battled well with Larry Collins and James Butler always posing a threat in attack.

Aherlow Gaels won the toss and attacked the near end for the opening half. It took them just two minutes to open their account when Darragh O’Brien and Liam Carew combined to set up Max Reardon for a point. Both sides found the harsh conditions troublesome but good work by Sean Bourke in attack, when after showing well for a long ball from midfield he planted a cross in front of the in-running Liam Carew who blasted a low shot to the corner of Brian Hammersley’s net, for the opening goal after eight minutes.

Eire Og Treacys were off target from a couple of placed balls before Larry Collins opened their account three minutes later following a jinking run down the centre. The second major for Aherlow came when Sean Bourke capitalised on hesitancy in the combo defence to overturn a defender before blasting to the roof of the net. This gave them a six point advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Liam Carew found the target from a placed ball before Gary Quirke fisted over from close-in to put eight between the sides.

The ten minutes before the break was probably Eire Og Treacys best period. Tom O’Dwyer done great work to set up James Butler with the combo’s opening goal chance but Joe Howard turned the goalbound shot over for a minor. Sixty second later Howard again came to the rescue when he save brilliantly from Colm Kennedy, who had been put through by James Butler.

Aherlow Gaels were quickly into action after the restart with Liam Carew at his very best. He kicked three points inside the opening four minutes, two from open play, to go seven to the good.

Both sides found the worsening conditions hard to cope with as the scores dried up. Eire Og Treacys pulled two back coming up to the end of the third quarter, one from a Darragh Kelly free and one from play from the always threatening Larry Collins. Diarmuid Looby had the last say when he closed out the scoring before Paddy Russell blew the long whistle.
