Redevelopment of Kickham Barracks takes a big step forward Cllr Siobhán Ambrose has received confirmation that the €94 million Preliminarily Business case for Kickham Barracks has now been submitted to Solas who will review it and then send it to the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science of Ireland for their approval.

Cllr Ambrose who is a member of the Tipperary Education and Training Board raised this issue again at this months meeting of the Board. The plan being proposed is being led by the Tipperary Education and Training Board but is for a joint project between the Tipperary Education and Training Board and Tus (Technological University of the Shannon) who are also one of the anchor tenants on the Kickham Barracks site. The proposal is for a shared or a connected campus between the Tipperary Education and Training Board (T.E.T.B.) and the University of the Shannon (TUS). The estimated cost for this proposal is €94 million and will entail the conversion of over 9,000m2 which includes both the conversion of existing buildings on this site and also new builds.

According to Cllr Ambrose “ This

is great news for Clonmel and a huge step in the right direction.

Clonmel is the capital town in the County and Kickham Barracks is a key site within the town centre. The funding being sought is €94 million which reflects the enormity of the project. If we are approved for this funding it will mean that up to 900 Further Education and Training students and over 400 Higher Education students could be studying on this site. This would obviously be a great boost for the education

sector in Clonmel and in turn will see the re-development of large sections of this site but the potential footfall of up to 1,300 students using this site would also bring a much a welcomed economic boost to the town. Cllr Ambrose thanked the staff in the Tipperary Education and Training Board and Tus for the amount of work that has to date gone into this application and she hoped that there would positive news as regards this application over the coming weeks.”

Tipperary’s Polly Student Accommodation Leases Must Match Murphy wins IRFU Academic Year Spirit Of Rugby Volunteer Awards Congratulations to Polly Murphy on her well-deserved recognition at the recent Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) Spirit of Rugby Volunteer Awards ceremony.

In the 2023/24 season, 45 rugby volunteers were honoured for their invaluable contributions to the sport, with one volunteer from each province selected for special recognition by their branch at an official ceremony at the Aviva Stadium.

Alongside Polly Murphy from Munster, Jim Moore from Con-

nacht was recognised during the pre-match lunch of Saturday’s game between Ireland and Italy at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, February 11th. Additionally, Conor Ryan from Leinster and John Waide from Ulster will receive their awards at the Ireland Versus Wales game on February 24th, standing out as shining examples of dedication and commitment.

Polly, nominated by Rockwell College Principal Audrey O’Byrne, “has played an instrumental

role in shaping the rugby landscape at our school. As the coach of the girls’ rugby team, Polly has dedicated countless hours to fostering talent and promoting the sport among our students.” Her influential role in promoting girls’ rugby within the school community has been pivotal, nurturing the talents of current Munster Rugby players such as Kate Flannery and Beth Buttimer, among others. Polly’s recognition is a testament to her tireless efforts and the positive impact she has made.

We are less than six months away from the annual search for accommodation by students attending universities and Colleges across the country.

With rental accommodation of all types extremely difficult to find, purpose-built student accommodation is the preferred choice of many students, particularly those who are just starting out on their Third Level journey.

The average duration of the academic year at Third Level is 41 weeks. However, some providers of student accommodation, particularly in Dublin and Cork, are now stating that they will only offer 51-week leases to students, despite the academic year being ten weeks less than this duration.

With an average weekly rent requirement of up to €300 for such accommodation, this would result in students and/or their family being forced to pay up to €3,000 to cover the 10 weeks when the accommodation is not required.

‘Developers who have provided Student Accommodation were given generous incentives to do so because of the increasing need for such purpose-built units’ says Deputy Lowry. ‘In the case of most such purposebuilt buildings, their Planning Permission dictates they are for letting for the duration of the Academic Year only.

‘In addition to the tax benefits they received, they are also exempted from the Residential Tenancies Act because they are providing

Student Accommodation for the established 41-week Academic year. Should they decide to extend tenancies by charging rent for 51 weeks they would no longer be entitled to such an exemption.

Also, in such cases, if students so wished, could enforce their Tenant Rights and extend their tenancy by up to 5.5 years. This would prove catastrophic for future students.

‘The bottom line is that incentives were provided to developers to ensure that students have an available safe place to live near their place of learning for the college year. This is what they agreed to do and the terms of this agreement must be upheld to ensure that fairness prevails’ concludes Deputy Lowry.

Irish Water criticised for continuing water outages Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne and Sinn Féin Representative for Clonmel Dean McGrath have criticised Irish Water for the continuing interruption to water supplies in Clonmel, and the lack of proper communications with the public on the outages.

The representatives were speaking as households and businesses deal with ongoing interruptions to supply without any proper updates being available.

Teachta Browne said: “We’ve been receiving numerous reports of supply interruptions and low water pressure to the Cherrymount, Old Toberaheena

and other areas on the Cahir Road in Clonmel.

“Despite reporting this matter to Irish Water, last week and over the back holiday weekend, there we are still aware of a number of homes are still being impacted by this problem.

“We have been told that the problem stem from issues with valves on the Western Road.

However, if the source of the problem has been identified, Irish Water must answer to why this issue has not been addressed in the course of the prolonged problem that has been affecting households and businesses, and why proper updates have not been posted on to the Irish Water

website.

Mr McGrath said: “For some residences and businesses, these issues have been going on for over a month, yet the problem persists and the level of communication from Irish Water to the public falls far short of acceptable.

“The ongoing problem is causing real problems for particular households who have children or other vulnerable family members to look after. This is unacceptable. Irish Water must account for the problem publicly, and engage locally on the matter, which has been persisting for much too long, and we have made this known to them.”

when the visitors were penalised for a high tackle, and made to pay with the conversion of the subsequent penalty. Scores were hard to come by as both defences were on top, and a number of decisions went against Cashel particularly in the scrum. But Cashel plugged away, and on sixty two minutes, were awarded a penalty on half way, which Ben Twomey stroked over. Shortly after they had a let off when Bohs missed a very kickable penalty, and with ten minutes remaining came the best score of the day.

Richard Kingston picked up a loose ball on half way. He worked hard to beat a number of players and carried twenty metres before off-loading to Paudie Leamy who passed to Kevin O’Connor. Jack Evenden tracked them all the way and was on hand to take the last pass and score a wonderful try, which Twomey converted.

The UL/Bohs heads did not go down and they continued to press for a score which would give them a losing bonus point.

It came as the clock went red.

They went through numerous phases and eventually got over for a converted try. There were now only three points between the teams. Cashel kicked deep into the opposition half and kept them there until the final whistle blew, five minutes into injury time, after maintaining their narrow advantage.

Energia AIL Division 2A UL Bohemians 13 – 17 Cashel The pressure was on Cashel on Saturday last when they travelled to Annacotty to take on UL/ Bohemians, after going the last two games without a win, and needing to keep pace at the top end of the table. The visitors have had their fair share of injuries, but never use that as an excuse, and the players who came in were outstanding in contributing to an excellent win. Conditions were good with a slight breeze helping the home team in the first half. This allowed them to totally dominate the first quarter of an hour, but unable to make that dominance count as Cashel put in a huge and successful defence performance. It took Cashel seventeen minutes to get into the Limerick sides half, but when they got there, they made full use of the visit. They won a scrum penalty kicked to touch on the opposition twenty two. After winning the lineout, Ryan O’Sullivan, jinked around the defence before feeding Kevin O’Connor who weaved his way over for a fine try. Ben Twomey converted to push Cashel seven up. Five minutes later a high tackle gave Boh’s a penalty and three points, but Cashel continued their scrum dominance, and took their lead to the break.

Cashel Memory Cáfe Launched in Cashel Library The new Memory Cáfe was successfully launched this last Tuesday morning at Cashel Library. The library was delighted to be part of this significant milestone in providing valuable information to carers, families, and individuals affected by dementia. The event was attended by numerous professionals dedicated to the field of dementia care. We had the privilege of hosting guest speakers, including Catherine Bartell (Service Manager, Le Cairde Day Care Centre, Clonmel), Gemma O’Donnell (South Tipperary Dementia Adviser), Paddy Fitzpatrick (South Tipperary Development Officer), Catherine Power (Support Co-ordinator at ALONE), Declan Burgess (Cathaoirleach, Tipperary CahirCashel) and the remarkable Marguerite Keating, a member

of the European Working Group of People with Dementia and a passionate advocate for those with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.

Also present were Mary Ryan and Emma O’Brien from the Memory Technology Library in Clonmel. We would also like to express our appreciation to all those who supported the launch from other Memory Cafes in Thurles, Knockanrawley Resource Centre, and Glengoole.

A special thanks was also given to Ned Lonergan, whose well known tunes provided a little entertainment throughout the event. For those interested, the next Memory Cafe in Cashel is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12th at 11 am. We invite you to join us for a cup of tea and a friendly chat. Prize giving at the culmination of successful Winter Tennis League at Larkspur Park Last week saw the culmination of another very successful Winter Tennis league at Larkspur Park in Cashel, with the newly installed floodlights proving to be a great success for both players and spectators alike who enjoyed months of evening tennis at the club. In all the league were supported by over 100 members of the club, playing across all of the various grades. The teams played through all weathers to fight for a place in the coveted finals, and while there is always supposed to be a fun element in every aspect of the club, there was plenty of good spirited competition also on display. The 2023 Winter League was very kindly sponsored by Affinity Credit Union Cashel and the club was delighted to welcome Ian Shelly from Affinity to present the prizes. And, with one seasons events just finished, the next one has started, with the Spring League Mixed Doubles now open for entries.

Sarah’s Cycle to go through Cashel Call out to volunteer groups this Sunday morning to attend Halla na Feile AGM next week Halla na Feile hosts its annual general meeting next Monday night at the hall from 7:30pm, and the current committee are hoping for a large turnout from the many volunteer organisations in the turn and local area.

The Hall has always been a focal point of Cashel, and has hosted so many events since it opened, both big and small, that they could not be counted. In recent years, the committee of the Hall have put in sterling work to upgrade many of the facilities, and erect a fantastic new modern

façade, and they have big plans to continue this work into the future. What they really need however, is more help and support from the many volunteer groups who use the facilities, so that they can get as many ideas about what the Hall could provide and make it even more relevant to the people of the town into the future. In that vein, they would like to invite as many of these groups to attend the AGM on Monday night, kicking off at 7:30pm. Please go and have your say, and make our Hall even better

Larkspur Park annual table quiz Larkspur Park tennis club will host their annual table quiz fundraiser at the rugby club in Spafield next Saturday night. The club has put a huge amount of investment into the facility at the park and have big plans for future improvements, especially the proposed Nissen

Hut development. So, if you’d like a fun evening, with a small bit of competition, and the chance for bragging rights for the next twelve months, why not get a team together and join in. Or, just come along in the night and someone will find a team for you.

The annual main fundraiser for Down’s Syndrome Tipperary, Sarah’s Cycle bike run, will go through the town of Cashel on Sunday morning next, with hundreds of cyclists from all over expected to make the journey to take part. Sarah Dillon unfortunately passed away when she was just 9 years of age, and since then her parents and everyone at Downs Syndrome Tipperary have kept her memory alive with the cycle run, and in the process have raised hundreds of thousands of euro, which helps to-

wards the magnificent Meitheal 21 facility in Thurles, a purpose built dedicated facility to deliver services that at much needed by the Downs Community. But not only do Downs Syndrome Tipperary want people to come out and help raise money, they’d love to see people come out and support the cyclists, to get on the street and cheer them on, and thank them for raising awareness of the needs of people in the Downs Community while celebrating the memory of a very special young girl

Cashel Girl’s part of Munster camogie glory for Tipperary There were huge celebrations at the weekend in town, and especially among the whole of the Cashel camogie club, when Tipperary emerged victorious in this year’s Munster minor A camogie final. The girls travelled to take on Waterford on their home patch, but didn’t let that

phase them when they won out on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-9 pts in the end. The club had three players on the panel, Hannah Butler, Emer Dwan and Anna O Brien, and all the players made a contribution not only to the win on Sunday, but to getting to the final and especially the win over

old rivals Cork in the semi’s.

Apart from being club mates, there’s also a common thread between Hannah and Emer, being first cousins, and coming from a long and proud line of not only camogie but hurling family from Cashel. The whole panel will celebrate this win, but

will also see it as a stepping stone for greater things to come in the year ahead, with their eyes firmly on All Ireland glory to come. The town and camogie community all around Tipperary, will be firmly behind them in their quests.

Great turnout for Cahir Tidy Towns annual table quiz The annual Cahir Tidy Towns table quiz took place last Saturday evening and once again a huge crowd attended to hear some very varied questions read out by our local celebrity quizmaster, Johnny B. Thanks to Hughie, Margaret and staff in the Shamrock Lounge for the first prize, the lovely food on the night and the great hospitality.

We must also thank the sponsors of some great raffle prizes, Cahir Camogie, John Quirke’s Jewellers, Declan Costello, Andy O’Donnell and Super Valu. The group would like to thank everyone for their continued support of this annual event. Well done to the winning team of Gerry & Alison Duffy, Kevin McGuinness and Maria Taylor.

On the domestic scene, we are busy

preparing for the St. Patrick’s Day parade and having won the best Float three years in a row, there will be a new winner of the cup this year but we will still be participating.

We planted a lot of trees in the past week from the proceeds of our can collection. We will continue collecting cans on the first Saturday of the month and next collection is on Saturday March 2 from 1011am in the car park or by usual arrangements.

Daffodils are starting to open around the town and the spring feeling is in the air. Another new business opened this week and there will be extra footfall, so we are getting our rota back in place to maintain the town. We do need help from our businesses to keep an eye near their premises as we can’t keep an eye on it all the time.

Meitheal 21 Former Mountjoy Fundraiser by Governor visits Daughters of Coláiste Dún Iascaigh Dún Iascaigh Senior Cycle students in Coláiste Dún Iascaigh were recently visited by Mr John Lonergan, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison. John was Governor of Mountjoy for over twenty years until his retirement in 2010 and also spent four years as Governor of the high security prison in Portlaoise. John has developed a deep understanding both of human nature and of Irish society from his years in the Irish prison service. Topics discussed by John included, explaining how the Irish prison service works, the importance of looking after our wellbeing and the link between crime and social deprivation. He also spoke to the students about

the danger of drugs. John also gave examples about how one bad decision can ruin a person’s life; students were afforded plenty of opportunities to engage with John on all the topics discussed during the presentation. Mr Lonergan concluded the talk by encouraging the students to surround themselves with people who make them feel good about themselves and highlighted how important physical activity is for everybody’s mental health. A presentation was made to John by sixth year students Jesse Kiely and Sadhbh Coffey to thank him for visiting the school. The Students were energised and inspired by Mr Lonergan’s presentation.

Well done to all involved, it is no easy feat to make pancakes for so many pupils in one morning but they did.

Pancake Day in Bunscoil Na Cathrach Teachers, staff members and the Parents Council at Bunscoil Na Cathrach organised pancakes for everyone in the Assembly Hall on Pancake Day last Tuesday.

The whole school could smell the pancakes cooking and the children waited patiently when it came to their classes turn to visit the hall. Once they had their pancake they were treated

The Society’s third 2024 lecture will feature a topic of considerable local and national interest. In 2015 the Irish Government gave a posthumous pardon to Harry Gleeson. Just over seventy years before, Harry Gleeson had been wrongfully executed in Mountjoy Prison for the murder of ‘Moll’ McCarthy. In early January it was announced that excavations were due to commence in the grounds

of Mountjoy in order to exhume the body of Harry Gleeson.

To mark this development, our Society has invited Kieran Fagan, the author of ‘The Framing of Harry Gleeson’, to tell the story of this double tragedy at 8pm on tomorrow, Thursday, February 22 in Cahir House Hotel. Admission is €3 for Members, €5 for Guests and Free Admission for Students.

Clonmel Honours Special Olympians with Grand Mayoral Reception In a heartfelt ceremony held at the historic Clonmel Town Hall, Mayor Molloy, along with Deputy Mayor Cllr Michael Murphy, extended a warm welcome to a distinguished gathering of Special Olympics champions. The event, which took place last November, aimed to recognise and celebrate the exceptional achievements of individuals who clinched victory in the 2023 Special Olympics, with a special mention given to Christopher Hogg for securing his second gold medal in Ten Pin Bowling.

Mayor Molloy set the tone for the event by expressing his admiration for the outstanding Olympians present, be they Gold, Silver, or Bronze winners. “To attain such honours requires immense dedication and effort, and we want to congratulate each and every one of you for the remarkable feats you’ve accomplished,” he proclaimed.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Michael Murphy, echoing Mayor Molloy’s sentiments, welcomed the attendees to the historic chamber, dating back to 1881, emphasising the honour of witnessing this well deserved Mayoral reception.

“This is a celebration of participation in the Special Olympics, and I extend my gratitude to Mayor Molloy for hosting this event”, he said, acknowledging the Mayor’s exceptional year in service.

Praising the Special Olympians as true heroes, Cllr Murphy high-

lighted the significance of the event in terms of learning new skills, forming lifelong friendships, and boosting confidence.

He particularly lauded Christopher Hogg, sitting at the top table, for his remarkable achievement in securing another medal. “You are our heroes, and the people of Clonmel are immensely proud of each and every one of you,” he declared.

Cllr Murphy also took a moment to express gratitude to the unsung heroes behind the scenes, including volunteers like George Hogg, Martin Moore and many others, as well as parents and fundraisers. “The positive forces behind this participation are invaluable, and on behalf of the community, I extend heartfelt thanks to each of you,” he concluded.

In closing, the Deputy Mayor wished continued success to the Special Olympians in their future endeavors, leaving the audience with a resonating message of pride and gratitude for the remarkable athletes who have brought honour to Clonmel.

In a heartwarming display of community appreciation, the Mayor recently called upon the dedicated efforts of George Hogg, a prominent figure known for his relentless volunteer work throughout the year. Recognising Hogg’s exceptional contributions, the Mayor said a Mayoral reception to honour his commitment to fundraising for various events

and community initiatives would be fitting.

Expressing gratitude to everyone in attendance, George Hogg took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on a group of lads from Clonmel known as the “Heavy Gang.” Easily identifiable by their distinctive heavy gang caps, this close knit group comprised Michael, Ger, Niall, John, the towering Philip and the outstanding Liam. Notably, Liam’s story unfolded as a testament to his resilience; despite winning a medal in the Special Olympics, he forfeited it because he surpassed his own time in the final an incredible feat that left attendees in awe.

The gathering also welcomed a special guest from Dublin, Nicholas, a former bowler for Leinster. George Hogg humorously expressed the ambition to recruit Nicholas into the Heavy Gang, showcasing the camaraderie and shared passion for sports within the community. Christopher, a notable representative of Munster in the 2018 National Games, demonstrated his bowling prowess by securing 4th place in singles and 5th place in doubles alongside his partner from Cork.

His journey included winning gold medals in 2019 and November 2023.

Acknowledging the instrumental role of Nicholas and Áine, two outstanding bowlers from the Waterford club, George Hogg attributed Christopher’s remark-

able progress to their guidance.

He highlighted Christopher’s consistent improvement, attributing it to his dedication to weekly sessions in Waterford.

Amidst the celebration, George Hogg made a special mention of Kelly from Carrick-on-Suir, a Special Olympian with three silver medals in the World Olympics. George marveled at Kelly’s gymnastic skills, describing her abilities as truly unbelievable.

Having traveled the world as a representative of Ireland in the Special Olympics, Kelly’s achievements added an extra layer of inspiration to the community gathering.

In a heartfelt conclusion, George Hogg extended his gratitude to everyone present and reserved a special acknowledgment for Christopher, describing him as his “best buddy.” The event not only celebrated the achievements of these outstanding individuals but also highlighted the unity and support that thrive within the community, making it a day to remember.

Martin Moore, a dedicated supporter of the Special Olympics, seized the opportunity to address the audience, expressing gratitude to the Mayor and reminiscing about an event five years prior. On that occasion, the Mayor hosted a Mayoral reception for the team and group volunteers bound for Abu Dhabi for the Special Olympics, a day that Moore

deemed an absolute honour to attend.

Sharing a heartfelt message from Mary Shields of Nenagh, who couldn’t make it to the event, Moore revealed his extensive volunteering journey with the Special Olympics, commencing in 2003 in Dublin. Over the years, he participated in five World Games, encouraging those less involved to consider forming a group to send representatives to the Special Olympics World Games in the future, with talks circulating about potential locations such as Australia or Indonesia.

Reflecting on the essence of the Special Olympics, Moore emphasized that everyone in the room was a winner, with no losers in this extraordinary event. He traced the origins of the Special Olympics back to Eunice Kennedy, sister of President Kennedy, who initiated the Games inspired by her special needs son. Moore highlighted the massive global volunteering effort that characterises the Special Olympics and underscored the enduring impact of the contributions made by

those actively involved.

Expressing his deep honour for the invitation, Moore extended gratitude to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Georgie, concluding with a heartfelt blessing. Mattie McGrath echoed this sentiment, affirming continued support for the Special Olympians and recognizing them as ambassadors for both county and country, as well as for their families. He expressed gratitude to the Mayor for hosting the Mayoral reception.

In a poignant moment, the Mayor proceeded to make a presentation to Christopher Hogg, the Gold winner, acknowledging his outstanding achievement on behalf of the people of Clonmel and the surrounding areas. This gesture served as a tangible recognition of the hard work and dedication exhibited by the Special Olympians, solidifying their status as true achievers in their own right. The event thus concluded with a powerful affirmation of the positive impact of the Special Olympics on individuals, communities, and the world at large.

Rockwell College Honoured Social Democrats with Membership Frame welcome news on Solar from IRFU Charitable Trust Panels for Schools Alan Moynihan, the Social Democrats local election candidate for Cahir, has welcomed the news that all eligible schools will have the opportunity to apply for the Department of Education’s solar panel scheme this year. This was confirmed by the Minister for Education in a recent response to a parliamentary question from the Social Democrats.

The Schools PV Programme will provide eligible schools with 6 kilowatts of roof-mounted solar PV, which equates to approximately 16 solar panels and includes connection to the grid and a monitoring system and display screen.

The scheme will assist schools in reducing their energy costs and their carbon footprint as part of the response to meeting the 2030 and 2050 Climate Action Plan

targets for the schools sector.

Alan Moynihan said “I am urging schools in Tipperary to be prepared for the opening of applications to more counties in quarter two of 2024. At this stage, it is still not clear which counties will be included in that phase and which will be included in the final phase in quarter four.

If Tipperary is included in quarter two phase, this could result in a tight timeline to respond.”

He added: “Along with making a positive environmental impact,

solar panels will assist in reducing the cost of running schools.”

Rockwell College recently had the privilege of receiving a distinguished membership frame featuring the Rockwell College crest from the IRFU Charitable Trust.

The presentation occurred at UL Sports Centre, where Bertie Smith, a member of the Munster Committee, presented the frame to our Gamesmaster, John Ryan, ahead of our School’s Senior Cup game against Crescent College Comprehensive on Thursday 8th February 2024.

Mind Matters A Blueprint for Practical Wellbeing

By Fiona O’Neill Psychologist and advocate of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Fiona delves into the intersection of psychology and wellbeing, exploring the connection between mental and physical health to unlock potential

“Soft Living” The Secret of Longevity -Wellness Trends Shaping 2024 Today, against the backdrop of the global mental health crises, there’s something of a cult surrounding the pursuit of wellness, which can be baffling for many people. Let’s consider what wellness actually means in practical terms. For me, wellness is self-preservation. It’s a bid to preserve yourself in such a way that you live your best life for the longest time. The notion of wellness or self-preservation is not new. I was living in the Far East over 20 years ago when I first came across wellness rituals like drinking warm water with lemon first thing in the morning, doing gentle tai-chi movements in the park before work (surrounded literally by hundreds of other people) and learning to eat mindfully until my stomach was 80% full. You’ll notice a theme running through 2024 wellness trends in that many of the ideas originated in the Far East based on the 4 pillars of nutrition, movement, social activity and spirituality.

There’s an old saying that if you don’t make time for your wellness, your body will make time for your illness. People are more focused on prevention in the 2020s and are more willing to invest time in wellness now for the longer term benefits to physical and mental health. I’ve always been interested in staying mentally and physically healthy but my focus changed when I lived in Asia. Looking at wellness with healthy longevity in mind means focusing on putting the right foods in your body (in the manner of oil for an engine), gently moving throughout the day, prioritising your friends and social relationships and not forgetting the all important element of spirituality (in the form of mediation, or practising gratefulness or your faith).

In the main, current wellness trends reflect a profound shift towards prioritizing mental health alongside physical health, the two go hand in hand. Gone are the days of pre-pandemic hustle culture; instead, we’re embracing the concept of “soft living” - reevaluating what really matters to us and nurturing ourselves mind, body, and soul. If you’re wondering what soft living means, it looks a lot like having a good work life balance, slowing down, making mental wellbeing a top priority throughout your day, not just at work but at home and even whilst exercising and travelling. What’s new in wellness is that “soft living” informs every activity in your day no matter where you are or what you’re doing.

Here are some things that people are trying in a bid to stay well in 2024.

Wellness through Nutrition and Movement I’ve spoken about the Blue Zone Diet in this column before – blue zones are geographic regions that are home to some of the world’s oldest people. There’s evidence that people in the blue zones (Okinawa in Japan, Ikaria in Greece, Loma Linda in California, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and the Ogliastra Region of Sardinia) live longer than average due to their lifestyle and the foods that they eat. It is thought that adopting the way of living from these zones prevents disease. A diet made up of foods like seaweed, kimchi, beans, yams, nuts and seeds and nonplanned physical activity known as NEAT (referring to activity that is not sleeping, eating or sport), all contribute to a longer, healthier life.

NEAT exercise includes walking up and down the stairs, cleaning

the house, walking to the car! In certain parts of the world in which people eat on the floor or at low tables close to the floor, the action of manoeuvring themselves to the floor and standing up again numerous times throughout the day has been proven to have hugely positive effects on the body. It’s like a workout at the gym several times a day!

Another major area of growth this year is precision nutrition, accomplished with the help of AI. This aims to replicate in a controlled manner what a blue zone lifestyle accomplishes more naturally. With the help of AI, it is possible to look at our blood biomarkers to help us choose the best foods, supplements and dietary pattern for our unique biology.

Reiki, Acupuncture and Chakra Balancing Massages: Wellness through Inner Harmony Treatments that are rooted in ancient Eastern healing traditions, have hugely gained in popularity for their ability to harmonize the body’s energy centres and promote physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. Customized sessions in Chakra balancing massage and Reiki and Acupuncture, often referred to as spiritual hygiene sessions, help individuals achieve a sense of inner harmony and vitality.

After these sessions, clients report feeling not just mental health benefits but physical benefits in relation to the gut, menstruation problems, anxiety and more. One client described a session like getting his spiritual oil changed.

Therapeutic Travel: Wellness through Relaxation and SelfReflction As the pendulum swings from the pre-Pandemic, over-scheduled hustle culture to an emphasis on

work life balance, interest has grown in therapeutic travel to destinations such as Beppu on the island of Kyushu in Japan. Here the hot springs experience is designed to rejuvenate the body, mind, and spirit. From natural hot springs to forest bathing and traditional Japanese healing practices, these destinations provide a sanctuary for relaxation, self-reflection, and inner peace.

Holistic Fitness: Integrating Gratitude and Mindfulness into Workouts Many gyms are now offering “holistic fitness” programmes which bridge the gap between traditional exercise and mental wellness practice. In the UK, gyms like Gymbox and Psycle are offering mind classes focusing on relaxation and stress relief, designed to cultivate a sense of mental clarity and wellbeing using stress-relief therapy.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Unlocking the Key to Wellbeing There has been a huge swell of interest in the vagus nerve from the wellness community in recent times and this is likely to further increase in 2024. I first wrote about the vagus nerve in 2021 and I firmly believe in the positive impact on the body of simple stimulation of this nerve. Understanding its role in regulating stress, anxiety, and overall wellbeing has led to the adoption of practices such as cold showers, cold water swimming, deep breathing, humming and laughing all of which stimulate the vagus nerve and promote relaxation and emotional balance.

Reformer Pilates: Redefining Fitness with Mind-Body Connection Reformer Pilates (the reformer machine adds resistance to

pilates exercises via springs that are part of the machine) has gained momentum as a holistic fitness approach that emphasizes alignment, core strength, and flexibility. Pilates has been around since the 1920s but recently it’s seen a resurgence in popularity not least because Harry Styles is a fan.

By integrating mindful movement with breathwork, reformer Pilates not only sculpts the body but fosters a deeper mind-body connection.

Sound Baths and Immersive Auditory and Sensory Experiences Sound baths involving crystal bowls, gongs, and other immersive auditory experiences have become popular as powerful tools for relaxation and stress relief in 2024.

By harnessing the therapeutic power of sound and vibration (e.g. watching an immersive video of someone whispering into a microphone which produces relaxing, tingly sensations in the body), these sessions induce deep relaxation, promote emotional healing, and enhance overall wellbeing.

Soft Living is not about Hopping on New Trends These latest trends reflect a growing need to invest time in one’s health but soft living is not just about new trends; it’s also about what is tried and true. Focus on building healthy habits that support your mental wellbeing. Simple things like drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, moving your body regularly throughout the day.

Prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, or spending time outdoors.

Consistency is key, so aim to incorporate these habits into your daily routine for long-term mental

wellness. Finally, I would like to touch on a tried and true wellness measure that has seen a massive increase in uptake in recent times.

Therapy: Wellness through Talking and Doing Traditional therapy continues to play an important role in wellness. We all face challenges in our lives – the loss of a loved one, the challenges of parenting, the trials of life after divorce, the routines of married life, the indignities of aging, the fear of war, the overwhelm at work - therapy provides a mental framework that can help you to come to realisations that would otherwise take many years to uncover. Therapy can help you to rewire your way of thinking and have a new lens on the world.

We often don’t realise that the way that we think is holding us back. Shifting that veil a little and examining other ways to interpret our world can make life tolerable again.

Therapy is a commitment. It’s not that you talk to someone and your problems go away, it takes a sustained personal effort to reroute well trodden neural pathways.

The process can be uncomfortable and the client must be prepared to embark on the journey if therapy is to work its magic.

In Conclusion The wellness landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, with individuals embracing soft living and purposeful pleasure that brings joy into all parts of the daily routine. If in doubt focus on the basics of selfpreservation: food, water, sleep, movement, chatting regularly to friends, acknowledging mistakes but limiting how much you focus on them. Learning to be kind to yourself is soft living.

It is that time of the year again & the Annual Charity Gig is back!

Friday 8th March promises to be a night of fantastic music by some of the South East’s best live bands around, where they will join together live on stage for one night only!

The fantastic ‘Wahey’s’, ‘Supersoul Machine’ and ‘The Pearly Whites’ promise to have the dance floor full for the night as all three bands promise to play as many crowd pleasers as possible.

In aid of local charities, Suicide Awareness Charity C-Saw & South Tipperary Autism Group both organisations will benefit enormously from all monies raised.

Over the last number of years this renowned annual event has raised in excess of €40k, which has made a massive difference to all recipient charities.

HSE in discussions to purchase land at Palmers Hill Tipperary Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne has been informed that the HSE is looking to purchase land in the Palmers Hill area of Cashel, where it is considering locating the long-awaited Community Nursing Unit.

Teachta Browne said: “In response to my requests for information regarding the progress made in assessing the suitability of sites in Cashel for the development of the long-awaited Community Nursing Unit, I have been told that the HSE is now in discussions around the purchase of additional land in the Palmers Hill area.

“Last year, Minister Butler confirmed to me that a site at Palmers Hill was being considered as an alternative site for the CNU. “However, concerns were expressed about accessibility to the site.

“The use of land at St Patrick’s was suggested to them, but they continue to consider that land insufficient for the planned 60bed facility.

“I have now been told that further to a review of the Palmers Hill site, HSE Capital and Estates are in discussions around the purchase of an additional property in the Palmers Hill area, which they

added, would allow greater access for the Community Nursing Unit.

“This would, it appears, be in addition to the land they already own.

“However, they did not identify the particular parcel of land they are considering for purchase, which is something I have now asked for further detail on.

“Further to this, the HSE have said that a decision on this matter is expected to be made in Q1 2024.

“I am now asking the HSE for more engagement on their plans, as I believe there should be more public input to the eventual, preferred option.”

Lap the Lake fundraising charity cycle event launched The Lough Derg RNLI Fundraising committee is excited to announce the continuation of the Lap the Lake RNLI charity cycle for the upcoming year. Following the successful events in 2022 and 2023, they are once again inviting participants to join in on Saturday, May 11. This special year marks the bicentenary of the RNLI, as well as the 20th anniversary of lifeboat service on Lough Derg. Cyclists may choose between a 120km route or a shorter 65km one, with both routes offering scenic and enjoyable experiences.

The longer 120km route will take cyclists on a full circuit of Lough

Derg, while the shorter 65km route will lead participants to Twomilegate lakeside amenity park before returning to Dromineer. Throughout the cycle, there will be support in the form of first aid providers, out-riders, marshals, and bike maintenance stops, along with comfort and refreshments stations.

Sinn Féin sets out plan for scoliosis waiting list Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne has called on the Government to address the scandal of growing waiting lists for children with scoliosis and spina bifida by engaging with, listening to, and acting on the concerns of parents, advocates, and clinicians.

Teachta Browne was commenting at the launch of Sinn Féin’s plan for scoliosis and spina bifida waiting lists, which was developed with parents of these children and their advocates.

The party has tabled the motion for debate in the Dáil next Tuesday.

The TD for Tipperary said that children deserve better, but that Government had failed to meet the promise made by Minister Simon Harris in 2017 that no child will be left waiting longer than 4 months for surgery.

Waiting lists for scoliosis-related surgery are now worse than they were when Minister Harris gave that commitment.

Teachta Browne said: “On Tuesday the Dáil will debate a motion which sets out a plan to tackle surgical waiting lists for children with scoliosis and spina bifida. We have engaged with parents of children with scoliosis and spina bifida and their advocates to develop this plan over the last few weeks. The motion we are proposing contains the very reasonable asks of these parents and advocates.

“The scandal of long waiting lists for children with scoliosis and spina bifida is a long-running tragedy. These children deserve better. Seven years ago, Minister Simon Harris promised that no child would be waiting longer than 4 months for surgery.

“The fact is there are more children on scoliosis-related waiting lists now than when Minister Harris gave that commitment. Three quarters of children are waiting longer than 4 months for orthopaedic surgeries.

“Parents and advocates want a comprehensive, transparent, structured programme of work to be carried out by an independent taskforce which includes them, and clinicians, in its reporting process. That is the main ask of our motion on Tuesday.

“The taskforce must be transparent, independent of CHI management, and must implement a plan that includes the full suite of care from pre-op to post-op, transitional care, specialist rehabilitation, and full and appropriate access to community services.

“There is also an obligation on the Government, both moral and under Sláintecare, to ensure that children with complex medical needs are seen and treated on the basis of clinical need, and not the ability to pay. Government must deliver an equitable service that is in line with international best practice.

“The motion also calls on the Government to resource and expand the paediatric orthopaedic elective care centre at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Cappagh, and to deliver a centre for elective paediatric urology services.

“The new Children’s Hospital will be essential for tackling these waiting lists, when it is eventually open. That is part of why the Children’s Hospital saga is so frustrating. There is still major uncertainty about the timeframe for the hospital being open, and that by the time it is, many of the children it was intended for will have aged out of paediatrics.

“Promises have been made and broken time and again. Children need the Government to increase domestic capacity, such as at Cappagh, and make full use of international options. Children with spina bifida need an elective paediatric urology centre. The new Children’s Hospital will not be a silver bullet, and children cannot wait for the new hospital. There is an urgency to this, and all options must be on the table.

“Our motion for Tuesday sets out exactly how Sinn Féin, in cooperation with parents, advocates, and clinicians, would implement change.

We would work tirelessly to improve health and social care services for children in need of urgent intervention.”

Gardening for Wildlife Trees & Woodpigeons - By Albert Nolan When I was planning my garden around 25 years ago there were a number of tall trees growing around the site. The general opinion was that these should be cut down as one they were too large to be moved or they would create shade.

In the end I kept the trees as it would have taken a minimum of 30 years for newly planted trees to reach the same height.

The biggest challenge was a large ash, and this was done with a digger and planted into the ground. It immediately leaned to a very sharp angle but after a few unsteady seasons straightened up. Over the years it has been host to several nest boxes and raised at least two families of great tits each summer. Sadly now it is slowly succumbing to Ash dieback and will cut down this year for safety reasons.

I will leave a stump of around two meters, and this will become a habitat for wood boring beetles and their larva. Some of the logs will also be stacked in a pile so even as the tree decays it will support many species of insects.

I also planted Alder trees, and these were grown from seeds that I gathered from the Gearagh in Cork. The trees travelled around with me in every increasing bigger pots till they found their permanent home.

Alder is a brilliant tree for wildlife and its cones attract

hungry flocks of siskins and redpolls during the winter.

The alders were planted by a small stream that runs at the back of the house and apparently the stream was used as a bath by the originally inhabitants of the house. A blacksmith and his family lived here over a hundred years ago and this was hot, dusty and dirty work. There was also a need for access to water to operate the forge.

I retained some conifer trees that were planted in the 1950s by a man emigrating to America. He is long dead, but his legacy is still standing. There roots are growing on pure rock, but they have weathered many storms by will eventually have to come down in the next few years.

Now as I look out my kitchen window at a mature woodland edge, I am delighted that I kept of the trees.

The trees are not the only distractions when I am meant to be working in the garden.

The brightening mornings come with a mini dawn chorus. Of course there is the robin, but song thrush and woodpigeons.

Woodpigeons are not a winter visitor to my garden but form large flocks roaming the lowland fields in search of food and especially ivy berries.

They perch on the electrical wires at the front and back of my house and their gentle cooing calls can be heard at dusk and dawn. Their normally quiet singing is often punctuated with displays involving lots of loud wing flapping. The birds often fight with their wings, but it is only a brief affair.

A pair have nested in the same location of my garden for several years. The small grove of trees at the back corner make an ideal place to build their nest. You could hardly call it a nest as it is just a few sticks thrown together. The female will lay two white eggs and the young grow quickly on a rich diet of pigeon milk produced by the female.

Pigeons eat variety of greens both natural like dandelion leaves and any unguarded cabbages or vegetables. Slugs often get the blame but if whole plants have been eaten then it is more likely pigeons. This is easily avoidable by covering with netting.

“Woodpigeon” Countryside and wildlife matters with Rupert Butler Most of you will be very familiar with these most common of birds but it is their adaptability that I find most intriguing. As far as I can tell they are our only bird species that have been recorded to breed during every month of the year, even though the majority will stick to the rulebook and breed during regulation months. It is not uncommon for them to have three broods during the course of a season, although this is tempered by the fact that only two eggs are laid on each occasion. The nest consists of a small raft of twigs sitting haphazardly in the fork of a tree or similar. If one were to inspect this rather lazy

construction you would be forgiven for thinking it to be precarious in the extreme. How both eggs and chick’s don’t fall from this flat structure is a wonder in itself. Because of the openness of the structure I would imagine that predation of both eggs and chicks is quite high. The fact that their eggs are white in colour doesn’t help matters also.

When food is at a premium woodpigeon are voracious feeders which will never endear them to the farming community. Large battalions will descend on cereal and rapeseed crops to inflict catastrophic damages in many cases. It is not uncommon to

see flocks of hundreds if not thousands of birds descend in some instances. During our winter months it’s not unusual to spy several of these plump little birds feeding on ivy berries along our roadside hedgerows.

Resident bird numbers are swelled by large influxes of migratory birds during autumnal months.

From September onwards huge battalions will roost in nearby coniferous woodland where shelter is at a premium.

I am convinced that their success is down to their adaptability and perseverance in an ever changing environment.

OPINION: GAA scores own goal in final fiasco

O’Loughlin Gaels selector Nigel Skehan got it right when he described the situation where his club was deprived of a good goal as ‘diabolical’.

He said his piece when interviewed on KCLR radio.

I would lean even stronger on the button of criticism by calling the nonsensical farce where the sliotar was carried over the St Thomas’s goal line for a ‘certain score’ as diabolical.

For an organization that may view its set-up as professional in all aspects of the game of hurling except in paying talented and heroic hurlers for their wonderful entertainment skills, the GAA mess bordered on shoddy admin shamateurism which should be bullet-proof.

On a turbulent day of biting cold, lashing rain and wild wind, the GAA let itself down in the worst possible way.

It failed to show respect to those who are the artisans and hod carriers of the hurling game of the future while perhaps concentrating too much on ensuring that not even a mouse could sneak in without paying digitally.

In other words the homework was done to ensure that administration generally, like having the pitch in pristine condition and that volunteers were at their posts thereby ensuring that the coffers would get the boost that was vital, deserved too.

But not being capable of deciphering when a ‘goal’ was not a ‘goal’ smacked of the kind of preparation by a conscientious soldier who brushed his or her uniform, polished his or her boots and then failed to tie his or her laces.

It is as simple as that.

Granted, Hawkeye was in good form when a possible point that oozed uncertainty amongst umpires was decided by a confident ‘níl’ or ‘tá’ decision.

But when it came to a possible match-changing decision, deciding whether or not a ‘goal’ was a ‘goal’ or was not, there was organized chaos and regardless of who likes it or not, it must be said; it also ended in a brutal injustice.

The world and its mother could see that a defender had fallen over the line, dragging the

sliotar with him.

What ensued resembled a scene from the Keystone Kops or Laurel and Hardy.

Yes it was funny in a crazy way too but certainly not for O’Loughlin Gaels players, mentors and hordes of devoted club supporters.

Hawkeye had paid deserved attention to possible points that caused uncertainty but the only goal of the afternoon, a legitimate score, proved to be the elephant in the room.

What happened?

Umpires were alert but human error meant that they missed out on what really happened.

In fairness, they should not shoulder the blame as they are not asked to be judge and jury on whether a point is a score or a wide.

Hawkeye is your only man or woman in the latter department.

The referee seemed to place his trust in the umpires and without any real fuss the goal was not given.

Ultimately, it is those on the ladder of power in the GAA, an organization that we must acknowledge, does brilliant

work for Gaelic Games, should be answering the awkward questions.

Was it a case of fail to prepare; prepare to fail?

O’Loughlin Gaels GAA Club was not the only loser. The GAA certainly had egg on its face.

No one spotted the fly in the ointment and so a game that was exciting entertainment

despite the fuss that Storm Isha kicked up was thrown into utter confusion.

On an occasion that was shrouded in a no goal controversy that should have been handled like a storm in a tea cup is now a festering sore that someone must come up with a cure for.

supporters, the pain is a bellyacher and may take years to cure.

In the meantime perhaps it would be wise to brace Hawkeye for any possible goal line controversies.

Granted, the horse has bolted, but the stable door is still ajar.

Hopefully someone will have the balls to slam it closed.

Hilarious take on the classic horror story goes down a treat at the Tipperary Excel Mel Brooks’ madcap comedy collides with Mary Shelley’s classic monster tale in Young Frankenstein which was the 2024 offering from Tipperary Musical Society, performed to packed houses in the Excel Theatre last week. The story revolves around Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist of legend, who has died and left everything to his grandson, Frederick. The grandson, who is himself Dean of anatomy at at American school of medicine, wants nothing to do with the family’s notorious legacy, but to settle his inheritance he travels to his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania, meeting the grandson of Victor’s loyal henchman, Igor; the beautiful lab assistant, Inga; and the mysterious Frau Blücher.

Before long, Frederick is sucked into his grandfather’s experiments and succeeds in creating human life. By the time they realise that the

Monster’s been accidentally given an abnormal brain, the Monster has already escaped, seemingly set to terrorize the countryside like the Frankensteinian monsters before him.

Will Frederick repeat the mistakes of his grandfather or will he succeed where the others hadn’t and turn his Monster into a dapper, intelligent man about town?

I was booked for the Thursday night performance and never having seen this performed on stage I wasn’t sure what to expect.

You always hope things are going to work out okay not just for the audience but also for the production team and performers, who put their heart and soul into the production.

I needn’t have worried as the show was a hilarious take on the classic horror story, combining madcap antics, a witty script, the most fabulous dancing and choreography, wonderful

singing and high energy comedic performances for one unforgettable, hilarious adventure in Transylvania.

Whilst the sets used at the Excel were minimal there was enough onstage pops and the use of wonderful projections which added so much depth and interest to the production. The use of projections is something that has to be cleverly done but in this case it was used to wonderful effect with Scene Five - A Country Road, in particular, being a major highlight. I almost felt that I was on the hay cart myself for this scene! What came across was the joy that this excellent cast seemed to be having on stage. Paul Norton did a masterful job as Director of Young Frankenstein and really got the very best professionally from this amateur cast. As to be expected from a Mel Brooks book, the show was slick, smutty and totally daft. Kevin Reade as Doctor

Frederick Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen btw) was perfect in the role, whether singing the praises of the cerebellum or losing himself in the ample charms of Inga, he was the anchor in the production.

His partner in crime the unbelievably stupid Igor (or is that Egor?) was played with great flexible physicality and comedic style by Emmet Donlan.

They complimented each other brilliantly throughout the show. This production however owes much to Emmet Donlan as Igor.

Donlan was hilarious, can sing and dance brilliantly and succeeded as well in the role as Marty Feldman did in the film. The slightly dim and bright-eyed saucy sex bomb playing of Inga

by Emma Sunderland was a joy to watch while Deirdre Ryan as Frau Blucher (cue horse whinnies) brought her own class and classy style of comedy to the

role and it worked a treat.

Her performance of ‘He Vas My Boyfriend’ was a standout moment in the show. Adam Skeffington was brilliant as the poor Frankenstein created monster. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for him as he was hunted and cajoled by the villagers. His entrance into the auditorium just before the interval was cleverly done and added to the high pitched excitement generated by the singing and dancing of the cast performance of ‘Welcome to Transylvania’ and ‘Transylvania Mania’. To say that this was brilliant would be to underestimate it, as it was absolutely superb. The dancing and choreography, under the direction of Stephanie Browne, was at a level that would put ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in the shade and this was showcased again in Scene Five - Act II with an outstanding performance of

jazz and tap in ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’. The show also featured a comedic powerhouse performance from Rachel Breen as the mad doctor’s fiancé, Elizabeth Benning.

Her rendition of ‘Deep Love’, which was sung with gusto to The Monster in Act II, was also one of the strongest numbers in the show. Both Derek Ryan as Inspector Hans Kemp and James O’Donovan as The Hermit, thoroughly delivered in their roles with both actors bringing their wonderful stage presence and brilliantly delivered comic presence to the fore. The talents of Cole Flanagan as Dr. Victor von Frankenstein/Dracula and Eimhin O’Meara as Ziggy were also clearly evident in this production and both contributed majorly to the success of the production.

The production team and those responsible for construction and design deserve special praise for costuming, lighting, sets

and design and praise also for the whole ensemble who certainly put their hearts and voices into this super production of Young Frankenstein. They were complimented by a superb Orchestra under the baton of Mary Rose McNally, who was also Musical Director & Chorus Mistress. Though small in number the principal cast was mighty and their talents shone through with gorgeous choral moments, standout choreography and wonderful comedy.

It was a hugely enjoyable production, though unfortunately I did miss some of the dialogue, which could be due to where I was seated on the night.

Nevertheless that doesn’t take from what was a great success for Tipperary Musical Society and a wonderful event for those that attended, as the nightly standing ovations was testament to.

Kilfeacle & District RFC dedicate their club grounds to the late Moss Morrissey Kilfeacle and District RFC has dedicated their club grounds to the late Moss Morrissey, from Kilfeacle, who died unexpectedly on Tuesday January 17th, 2023.

The dedication ceremony took place just prior to the 1st XV game v Clonakilty on Sunday February 4th. A memorial plaque in honour of Moss was unveiled by his brothers Seanie and Philly, and then blessed by Fr Pat Coffey PP. Patsy Coman on behalf of Kilfeacle RFC welcomed everyone to Morrissey Park and explained briefly about Moss’s connection with Kilfeacle RFC. “Since our beginnings in Kilfeacle, Moss has been a huge part of what went on here, from the training field to the pitch that

you are now standing on. It is only right that a plaque should be here in memory of him on what was his own land and has provided an incredible service to hundreds of children and adults that have played and trained here. Moss was a lovely personable man and I can say that I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He had an eye for a horse and an eye for a bullock and he was always on the go. We all have so many fond memories of the man.

Moss was a gentleman with a huge interest in the club and its people, and he was always so fair in his dealings with us. We miss him greatly and we are proud that Morrissey Park is now named in Moss’s honour” concluded Patsy.

An interesting footnote to this story is Moss’s affinity with the robin. On the day of his funeral, the song ‘When the robins come Home’ was sung at his Funeral Mass.

At the burial afterwards at Kilfeacle cemetery a robin appeared at the graveside as Fr. Coffey was saying the concluding prayers and remained there on the green carpet for a lengthy period and then to everyone’s surprise at the pitch dedication on Sunday a robin could be clearly seeing flying around upstairs in the clubhouse. A message from Moss perhaps that he was watching over proceedings as Conor Riordan sang a verse of that song ‘When the robins come Home’. Rest in peace Moss.

Tipp town Councillors start petition to retain Post Office and its services in town centre Cllr Tony Black and Cllr Annemarie Ryan have started a petition to ensure our post office service remains in the centre of Tipperary Town. Both Councillors say that in the event of Tipperary town Post Office transferring from the control of An Post to a contractor or postmaster, that the current level of front desk services must be retained. In addition, they are requesting that in the event that services are relocated from the post office’s current location, that all services must be located in the centre of Tipperary town. “The Grant Thornton Report on the Post Office

Network stated that the withdrawal of a post office from an area has a significant impact on the remaining businesses due to the impact on local footfall. In light of the fact that a taskforce has been assigned to Tipperary town to assist it in developing employment and educational opportunities, developing its infrastructure, tackling dereliction, and putting unused buildings to use, any efforts to take the post office out of the town centre would be in stark contrast to what Tipperary town needs. Tipperary town also has demographics that mean more people depend on services like those

currently provided by An Post, and therefore need easily accessible services.

Anything but a town centre location cannot be accepted, and the people of Tipperary town need assurances that its post office will remain in the town centre” say

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Jack Leonard and his family rebuild some of what was lost in a fire that destroyed his garage and workshop on Friday January 19th. Jack has worked on TV Aerial and Satellite Dishes most of his life. After working with RTV Rentals in Tipperary town, he decided to set up his own business, Jack Leonard Aerial & TV Services. Jack will be well known also from his involvement with Tipperary Vintage Rally, who have to

date raised over €270,000 for charity and particularly for the South Tipperary Hospice Movement. Jack and his wife Anne along with their daughter Carol are the backbone of Tipperary Vintage Rally. He has always been there to help everyone in the community and now the community has a chance to show support for Jack when he needs it most. Jack lost his work van, vintage vehicles, bikes, all his tools, treasured family items and much more memorabilia

that can never be replaced.

Many items of sentimental importance and value were destroyed in the fire and the Leonard family wish to expresses their gratitude to Tipperary Town Firefighters, An Garda Síochána Tipperary Town, their neighbours and everyone who turned up to lend their

Richard retires as popular Executive Menswear to close Executive Menswear, a well known and very highly regarded drapery boutique in the heart of Liberty Square, Thurles is closing its doors with news of the retirement of proprietor Richard Dinan.

The shop has been a constant in Thurles town and helped to dress generations of young boys, teenagers and men in the highest quality clothing with Richards eye for fashion and always well stocked business attracting people from far and wide. Indeed, it was not just Thurles town which benefited from his extensive stock - they came from all over Tipperary and the reputation of the store was matched only by the regard customers had for Richard himself and the many staff members he employed down through the years.

Always with very attractive window displays which were the eyes into the soul of the boutique, Richard was constantly dressing the windows and ensuring that the casual passer-by had much to see and admire, before being drawn into the shop for a browse or to spend some cash. The shop underwent many refurbishments through the years, but while the premises may have changed, the

brilliant service and genial approach of the proprietor and his staff did not.

Business has changed considerably since Richard first opened the doors of the store which was formerly a supermarket, and so too has fashion. In fact, fashion changes so quickly - even men’s fashion - and Richard was always a man who kept up to date with all the trends thereby ensuring that anyone being dressed in his store was decked out in all the modern gear.

Many wedding parties were kitted out for the big day by Executive Menswear and the expert knowledge of Richard and his staff ensured that this element of the big day was something the groom and his party did not have to worry about. Executive Menswear has been represented at many many weddings down through the years.

Executive Menswear was also a great supporter of local clubs, charities and groups in terms of donating spot prizes and gift vouchers, and this was very much appreciated by all those groups who were grateful to Richard for his generosity and kindness down through the years.

Thurles in mourning following death of fifteen year old Leah There is widespread sadness in Thurles this week following the tragic death of Leah O’Meara, who was tragically killed in a road crash on Thursday night.

Leah was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision, after the car she was a passenger in crashed into another car.

The collision occurred on the R503 at Rearcross, near Nenagh, at approximately 6.45pm on Thursday, February 15.

When the tragic news broke out, tributes poured in for the 15-year-old who was a student in Colaiste Mhuire Co Ed in Thurles.

Leah had lived in Thurles for some time but had recently moved to close-by Holycross. She was very warmly remembered by friends in her school and in her neighbourhood.

She was described as “an intelligent, funny and

pretty young lady” said one post on social media wish added that she would be “terribly missed.”

The Principal, staff, students, Board of Management and parents of Coláiste Mhuire CoEd expressed shock and sadness at the passing of one of their students.

“Leah was a third year student, had just completed her mocks, had a winning smile, she was involved in all aspects of school life and was so friendly and popular among her peers. She will be will be greatly missed by all who knew her,” school Principal Denis Quinn said in a statement He added that the priority was the wellbeing and welfare of the students, parents and staff.

The Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed Critical Incident team met to coordinate a response and to enact the Critical Incident Plan.

Tipperary ETB and Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) have been supporting and advising the school in their efforts and students were supported in their return to school following the midterm break.

“We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to all those affected, especially Leah’s family, friends and the wider school community at this sad time,” the statement said.

Leah reposed at her home on Monday evening before removal on Tuesday morning to Bothar Na Naomh Church, Thurles for Requiem Mass at 10 am. Interment followed afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Thurles.

Prayers had been offered in Thurles and Holycross parishes over the course

of the weekend while there was a huge outpouring of sympathy and support for the bereaved since news of the tragidy became known.

Gardaí in Nenagh are still appealing for witnesses following the fatal collision which claimed a 25th life on the roads of the country.

Local activist Tommy Barrett has said that he is delighted to have been elected as Chairperson of Moyne Road/ Bellevue Residents Association at the weekend for the eleventh year.

The AGM was described as being very productive and commenced with Mass which was celebrated by Rev Fr Joe Walsh. The chairman thanked everyone for the continued support to the hard working committee which undertakes such great work in the community.

Our latest Bingo night was another fantastic success. We are so thankful to the community for supporting this fundraiser with so much enthusiasm. Last Friday saw our largest attendance to date with the community centre hall packed to capacity.

There were eight goals and lots of excitement in this ding dong battle of a cup tie on Sunday afternoon.

The game was moved from Galbally, and the sticky ground made good football difficult, but lessened in no more of a spectacle and the two sides fought for every ball. They may have given up home advantage, but Galbally struck first when they opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute, when after some good play down the right wing, a ball was crossed onto the head of Ciaran Sheehan and he made no mistake from six yards out. But the lead lasted just

The hosts finally started to get going and began pressing forward, but all their good work was undone in the twenty first minute when a speculative shot from distance, deceived the home keeper to put the visitors in front. But just five minutes later, Pike were awarded a penalty of their own, and Shane Franklin made no mistake from twelve yards out. This left Cashel throwing everything bar the kitchen sink at their opponents to try to get back on level terms a second time, but the Limerick side defended superbly and took the spot available in the semifinals at the end.

This lead to the First Division side throwing everything at their Premier League opponents, but two minutes from time they left themselves open to a classic counter attack, and Ciaran Purcell made sure of the victory when he added a fifth for Borris.

Clonmel Town continued their good run of form of late when they progressed to the next round of the Tipperary Cup with a comfortable five goals to one win against Second Division side Suirside in Grange at the weekend. The home side started well and held the Premier League side for the first quarter of the tie, but with the pressure

intensifying Town opened the scoring in the twenty fourth minute, when Keith Cashman finished off a good flowing movement and gave the home keeper no chance from ten yards out. They quickly got a second when loose play in the middle of the field saw a ball turned over and Town flashed a pass into Jake French who saw his shot deflected to the net. Cashman made it three quick goals in the twenty ninth minute with a shot that flashed to the top of the next, to effectively end the game as a contest. The home

team battled hard however, but in doing so left gaps at the back, and three minutes before the break the visitors added a fourth when Ben Browne scored from just outside the box. Suirside continued to acquit themselves well and finally pulled a goal back twenty minutes from time, when Paul Kennedy set up David Recontre to score from the edge of the area. But the final goal of the day went to the away side, who re-established their four goal lead when Browne got his second in the final minutes of the game.

Borris were crowned Div 2 Youths champions on Saturday after a cracking game at home to Mullinahone, that produced four goals and finished in a draw. This was a fast moving and free flowing game from the start, with both sides having plenty of early chances. But it was the hosts that struck first in the twenty fifth minute, after great work from Conor Ryan saw him play in Cian Dwyer who made no mistake firing across the goalkeeper to the net. The visitors didn’t let this deter them, and went on the hunt for an equaliser which they got ten minutes later, with a quick counter catching the hosts cold. It looked as though the teams were going to go in level at

half time but again, Conor Ryan broke free down the right and squared an inch perfect ball to the oncoming Dwyer, who buried his effort past the Mullinahone keeper to put Borris ahead at the break. The second half started again at a frantic pace with multiple gilt-edged chances missed by both sides. With twenty minutes to go Borris were made to rue their squandered chances when the visitors charged forward, and tore through the home defensive line to get a second equaliser.

Both sides went looking for a winner in the final minutes but there were no more goals and the point gained was enough to land Borris the league title.

Tipperary are Munster Minor A champions for 2024 after seeing off a tough challenge from Waterford in Walsh Park on Sunday. John Ryan’s team overcame a slow start which saw them trailing 4 points to no score after 12 minutes to run out deserving winners on a final scoreline of 1-13 to 0-09.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind Waterford looked really threatening early on with Emma Fitzgerald and Maggie Gostl putting them into an early lead.

This was Waterford’s real purple patch and they will regret not having scored more as they hit a number of wides which proved very costly in the end.

It was 13 minutes before Tipp registered their first score thanks to a Lucy Heffernan point from play. By now the Tipp management team had made a number of positional switches and these really began to work as Coaimhe Stakelum and Danielle Ryan both began to exert their presence on the game. And by the 20th minute Tipperary were 3 points clear. Caoimhe Stakelum gathered possession and was baring down on goal before forcing Katelyn Gardner to pull off an excellent save. The rebound fell to Caoimhe and she connected on it beautifully to pull on the ball to the back of the net to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Caoimhe then hit 2 more points in succession from a free and play before Danielle Ryan pointed to extend Tipp’s lead. Waterford finished the half well with 2 points to leave the half time score 1-07 to 6 points. With the wind advantage to come Tipperary were in a commanding position going into the second half. However they didn’t get it all their own way as Waterford continued to battle hard feeding plenty of ball into their danger woman Maggie Gostl. Gostl used all her pace and skill to win key possession in the second half but Paula Quirke did a superb job marking her tightly and making sure she didn’t get in for a goal. The Tipperary defensive unit as a whole was brilliant with Sarah Corcoran leading from

centre back while Danielle Butler was very assured and steady in the goals. Maggie Gostl and Caoimhe Stakelum exchanged frees early in the second half while Lucy Purcell and Ciara Shelly who worked hard throughout both got on the scoresheet. After the game captain Sarah Corcoran accepted the winning trophy from Munster chairperson Christine Ryan while player of the match award was awarded to Caoimhe Stakelum.
