Cllr. Siobhán Ambrose has welcomed the announcement by specialist electrical contractor H & MV Engineering that they will create over 400 jobs this year across their three plants. One of these plants is their recently acquired Skanstec Group Company which is located at Questum in Clonmel.

Skanstec delivers infrastructure projects across Europe. According to Cllr. Ambrose this expansion announcement is very positive in terms of future investment

in both Clonmel and indeed County Tipperary. She hoped that this announcement will encourage other engineering or manufacturing companies to look at Clonmel as a potential base for either their new or their expanding company. She said that this job announcement is a very positive start to the year for Clonmel and she wished the company well as they begin rolling out these 400 jobs across their three plants.

Jim O’Keeffe: A Tribute to a Faithful Sentinel Republican Last Sunday, a somber commemoration unfolded in honour of Jim O’Keeffe, a 25-yearold farm manager hailing from Two Mile Bridge, Clonmel. Jim, a dedicated volunteer of the 5th battalion of the Tipperary IRA, was remembered by a large crowd.

The commemoration, led by Sean Nugent, began with a heartfelt recitation of a decade of the rosary as Gaeilge.

Nugent then embarked on an educational journey, enlightening those present about the historical significance of the Moangarriff area. He eloquently recounted the chilling events that unfolded on the 5th and 6th of February 1921, emphasising the region’s role as a hotbed of Republican activity during the War of Independence and the subsequent Civil War. Numerous ambushes marked the landscape, from Ballypatrick and Kilcash to the mountains and along the routes of Ballyknocken, Kilsheelan, Powerstown, Clonmel, and surrounding areas. The community’s overwhelming support for the Republican cause and independence echoed through the years.

Reflecting on his own childhood, Nugent recalled the families residing in the vicinity, painting a vivid picture of the historical backdrop. The Molloy household stood just across the road, while a small cottage nearby housed a blacksmith named Pat Collins.

The Best family, of English descent, occupied the area where Bulmers is now situated, having acquired the land for their service to the crown.

Nugent pointed out the Turnpike House at the corner, suggesting its historical connection to a toll bridge. Further along, he reminisced about the Womsely residence, a sprawling house near the ambush site, where two English ladies staunchly supported the Republican cause. Surprisingly, the Womsley’ house, which housed a secret room, remained untouched by raids, attesting to the family’s sympathetic stance towards the members of the 5th battalion. In the historical account of the incident that unfolded on the fateful night of February 5, 1921, the setting was around the Clonmel area, a region steeped in the memories of the past for the narrator’s family, particularly their mother. Recollections often revolved around two ladies, and it became apparent that the Devonshire Regiment, the infamous Black and Tans, played a pivotal role in the events of that night.

The Devonshire Regiment, stationed in Clonmel, had garnered a notorious reputation.

However, their involvement in this specific incident was seemingly accidental. A trenching

party was actively engaged in digging a trench around the site of an old humpback bridge, part of the region’s landscape before road realignments took place.

The purpose of this trench was to impede troop transportation to Waterford and Kilkenny, thereby slowing down their activities.

On the night in question, the Devonshire Regiment received intel that arms were stored in a nearby house, situated near the roundabout close to Ferryhouse.

Around 11:30pm, approximately twenty well armed soldiers descended upon the location, with some entering the house for a thorough search, while others maintained a vigilant watch outside.

The ambiance that night was marked by a strong easterly wind, and those outside the house, equipped with rubber soled footwear, overheard the sounds of shovels and picks. Sensing an imminent disturbance, they swiftly proceeded down the road. Jim O’Keeffe, tasked with sentry duty and unarmed, found himself unexpectedly captured.

Interrogated by the soldiers, he remained steadfast, refusing to disclose any information.

The soldiers, undeterred, placed two of their own in charge of Jim and proceeded toward the area where his comrades were diligently digging the trench. In a turn of events, Jim, a formidable figure at 6 feet 3 inches, managed to overpower his captors. With a torch in hand, he alerted his comrades to the approaching danger. The soldiers hastily retreated, leaving Jim to grapple with his captors. Tragically, he was shot and died of his injuries on the road that night.

Sean extends to the surroundings, noting the transformation of the landscape over time. Six small houses, including Walsh’s shop, once stood nearby. The soldiers, upon completing their grim task, sought Walsh’s assistance. They instructed the family to prepare their donkey and cart to transport Jim O’Keeffe’s lifeless body into Clonmel.

Additionally, one soldier, wounded in the shoulder during the encounter, was also brought into town.

As the soldiers departed, it remained uncertain whether the trenching party had been armed. A shot was fired, injuring a soldier, and in the aftermath, the soldiers hastily abandoned their shovels and picks. A surreal moment unfolded as one member of the party, initially unaware of the gravity of the situation, ventured into the fields, believing the incident to be a joke. Upon returning, he discovered the devastating aftermath, with the Black and Tans having sprayed the area with machine gun fire.

In reflecting on this tragic episode, Sean highlights the unpredictability of historical events and the lasting impact on the landscape and lives of those involved. The inquiry that followed his demise was, regrettably, marred by what many deemed as sham proceedings.

As the curtain fell on this questionable investigation, a general narrative emerged, one that unfolded with Jim’s untimely death while attempting to evade capture.

The gravity of the situation deepened when Jim O’Keeffe’s father and sister were summoned to the Barracks to identify his lifeless form. The Devonshire Regiment, seemingly unwilling to let matters rest, ventured into the O’Keeffe residence, ransacking it under the pretext of uncovering hidden arms or contraband. Their intrusive actions, occurring just a day after the tragic incident, left the family grappling with the indignity of invasion during a time of mourning.

Yet, amid the shadows of despair, there emerged a beacon of bravery. Jim O’Keeffe, remembered as “The Faithful Republican Sentinel,” played a pivotal role in averting potential carnage. It is recounted that, on that fateful night, his timely use of a torch prevented what could have been a massacre on the road where his comrades were digging. His sacrifice in the line of duty, a selfless act of heroism, left an indelible mark on the community.

50th years after Jim’s death, a solemn gathering assembled at the spot where he sacrificed his life. A banner, stretching across the road, bore the poignant inscription: “There’s no greater love than for a man to lay down his life for his friends.”

This commemorative event underscored the enduring respect and gratitude for Jim’s courage.

In an attempt to perpetuate his memory, there was a proposal to rename the new bridge on the Clonmel-Waterford road as the “O’Keeffe Memorial Bridge.”

This proposition emanated from the surviving members of the 6th Battalion of the Tipperary 3rd Brigade, a poignant tribute to a fallen comrade.

As progress unfolded with the construction of the new road, a twist of fate threatened to consign Jim O’Keeffe’s legacy to oblivion.

His commemorative plaque, initially situated on the old Clonmel road, faced the prospect of being lost forever. The saga took an unexpected turn when Sean Nugent, undeterred by initial setbacks in his inquiries, and with the help of the late Carrie Acheson and Molloy

The commemoration ceremony, led by members of the O’Keeffe family, included a poignant rendition of the ballad dedicated to Jim by Sean Nugent. The solemnity of the occasion concluded with the resonant strains of the national anthem, “Amhrán na bhFiann,” echoing across the landscape, a fitting

tribute to a man who laid down his life for the ideals he held dear. Jim O’Keeffe’s legacy lives on, etched into the fabric of the community, ensuring that his sacrifice is not forgotten but celebrated with reverence and remembrance for generations to come ensuring that the legacy of The Faithful Sentinel Republican lives on. Browne makes hospital plea

Lord Brian Cotter’s passing ends Carrickon-Suir’s House of Lords connection Carrick, Clonmel and Waterford cousins mourned the death of former Liberal Democrat MP, Lord Brian Cotter, whose funeral took place in Weston-superMare on Tuesday, 12 December.

Brian’s mother was Mary Nugent from Carrick House, Carrick on Suir. She married a medical student named Mick Cotter. They had two sons, Niall and Brian.

Brian was elected as a Liberal Democrat MP for two terms.

He was then appointed to the House of Lords, where he served until shortly before his death. He was appointed on the recommendation of Charles Kennedy, the then Liberal Democrat leader.

Before being elected to

Parliament, Brian met with Irish political parties. They gave advice on electioneering and items such as setting up clinics.

His meetings with the Irish political parties paid off when he was elected to Parliament.

Brian and his late brother and Niall were regular visitors to Carrick and Ardmore, County Waterford. In Carrick, they stayed with Dympna Burke nee Nugent, their mother’s younger sister and her husband Ray Burke owner of the drapery in the Main St. the oldest in Ireland, established in 1806.

Brian was survived by his wife Eileen, who many years ago, painted a beautiful water colour of the Old Rectory, Carrick-onSuir. He was also survived by

his children, Nicholas, Dominic and Isabel and grandchildren and nephews and nieces.

His Carrick cousins Sister Barbara Burke of the Ursulines, Patrick, Lonan and Raymond Burke, together with their sisters Ronagh Baumann and Cathy O’Rourke mourned his passing, as did his Clonmel cousins Paul Morris, David Morris and Sheena Ryan (Brisbane Australia).

He was also mourned by his cousins Aidan Nugent formerly of Cliff House Hotel Ardmore and Paul Nugent son of Matt Nugent, a brother of the late Brian’s mother Mary.

Brian was especially missed

by members of the Iranian and Chinese communities in England. Indeed, Brian and his wife Eileen visited the Great Wall of China, not so many years ago.

Appropriately enough, the celebrant of his funeral Mass was a Canon Tom Gunning of Corpus Christi Church Westonsuper-Mare.

He was a native of Sligo who went to live in Bath when he was a young boy. He is a nephew of Louis Gunning, former racecourse commentator.

Brian, Rest in Peace.

Tipperary Sinn Fein TD Martin Browne has requested that the option of attending Cashel Minor Injuries unit is added to the list of alternatives to Emergency Department presentations at Tipperary University Hospital at times of significant pressure.

Teachta Browne said it is his belief that minor injury units can play a considerable role in taking some of the pressure off Emergency Departments.

“However, while there is some advertising of the minor injuries unit in Cashel, it is left out of the list of alternatives contained within media statements issued by Tipperary University Hospital when its Emergency Department is experiencing high numbers of presentations.

“While I understand that the hospital provides a minor injury service, I believe that the Cashel unit still has a potentially important role to play here.

“More prominence of this medical facility which exists within the Cashel community, would, in my view, make more people aware and increase the number of people who might consider it as an option ahead of the Emergency Department.

“That being said, it is important to note that the Minor Injuries Unit is only suitable for certain medical issues, and does not treat children under the age of 5.

“The role of community care in taking pressure off our acute hospitals is significant. Given the pressure hospitals are currently experiencing, to know the services in your locality may be more convenient for people, and may have the knock-on effect of assisting acute hospitals.

“I have raised brought this to the attention of TUH, and have been told that in future statements the Minor Injuries in Cashel will be included as an option for those that require the service.”

Tom Brett was the real deal

By Jimmy Rhatigan Photographer Tom Brett was top class in his chosen profession.

For a lifetime he was a highly respected maestro of the Fourth Estate and a passionate member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

It was my privilege to work with Tom on the staff of the Kilkenny People Newspaper. He was dedicated, conscientious, hardworking and was a truly loyal and supportive colleague.

Along with our friend and colleague Seán Hurley, a brilliant editor, he was an ideal mentor, always available for advice, generous with his time.

Tom knew the profession inside out and with a heart and a half, he shared his wealth of knowledge.

As young journalists we could always rely on the trade union support of senior men Tom and Seán who encouraged NUJ principles and ideals.

Tom was a proud man when his eldest son Thomas followed his footsteps into professional photography.

Tom was genuine, the real deal and when necessary he defended his corner gallantly.

He spoke from the heart and always worked towards getting an assurance that his professional work was not used, without his permission, by a source other that the local newspaper to which he was so loyal.

He provided photographic coverage of news and sport. He particularly enjoyed taking action shots at hurling clashes and,

understandably, as an aficionado he was at home when covering golf. He was a dedicated PRO at Kilkenny Golf Club for some years. He also had a great sense of recognizing potential news stories.

In lay man’s language I would say that Tom was a dab hand at golf and loved his outings with fellow members of the press.

He was a son of Fatima Place in our city and, interestingly, he was to be one of several locals whose families lived in Fatima and who, over the years worked for the ‘People.

The latter included journalist Kerry McCarthy who went on to work for Independent Newspapers and journalist John Knox who progressed to sports editor.

I was to spend 38 years on the staff of a paper that was then owned by the Keane family from Bishop’s Hill, excellent employers.

Other Fatima stalwarts on the staff were Pat Griffin and John McKee both of whom were talented members of the printing department in High Street and

later in Purcellsinch.

Tom never minced his words. One quickly learned how he felt about a particular situation. He didn’t court popularity and perhaps that was the key to the respect that the greater Kilkenny community had for Tom and his photography.

Perhaps the best tribute of all was paid to him when his collection of local photography, The Brett Collection, was acquired by Kilkenny County Council and will forever and a day be remembered as a wonderful legacy to his beloved Kilkenny from Tom, his family and his camera.

Tom is survived by his wife Grace, daughter Gráinne; sons Thomas and Alan; brothers Billy, Paddy, Hugh and David; grandchildren Conor, Cathal, Seán, Caoimhe, Isaac and Maria; daughter-in-law Carmel; son-in-law Ken and Kate; nephews and nieces, extended family especially Claire.

He was predeceased by his brother Seán and sister Mary. Tom was aged 84 years.

Gardening for Wildlife The Song Thrush - By Albert Nolan Spring has officially arrived, but I am resisting the temptation to go mad and start sowing lots of seeds.

While they will germinate the ground outside is still very cold and the plants will be miserable in those conditions. I have been reusing old compost bags by placing them over the soil and the black colour helps trap the heat from the sun and warms up the soil.

This is a great time to do a little seed swoping and I have been doing this with friends and family. I always have to many seeds and in return I get some unusual flowers and vegetables from equally exotic friends.

Each seed packet has an expiry date and after this the germination rate start to decline. This is the perceived wisdom but sometimes this can get knocked on its head. A man in a group I work with brought in some cabbage seed that was 15 years out of date.

It was a good variety called greyhound and he had kept the packed well sealed and in a dry location.

We decided to sow them and after a few weeks they germinated and when they were big enough planted in a bed. They turned into the most delicious cabbages,

and it was a real lesson in the longevity of seeds.

As the evenings stretch, we have been preparing the community Polytunnel for spring. The hard labour of carrying in bags of well-rotted manure for the potatoes and beds will be well rewarded with tasty vegetables in the coming months.

I also sowed a few trays of onion seeds, and they are slow to germinate, around a couple of weeks. They will be planted outside in a well-prepared bed and onions grown from seed store better over the winter. Spring onions can also be started, and both of these vegetables are quite hardy but if severe frost is expected cover with a fleece or even newspaper.

The tunnel is not all about work and we have a few chairs where we can sit down and relax in nature. We have been listening to a song thrush whose territory is located around the tunnel. He has been in full song for the last few weeks, and he is a powerful singer, and we can hear him well before we reach the tunnel.

Song thrushes often repeat the same phrase up to three times and it was traditionally thought that they had a bad memory. Mature birds have a warm brown back and a very speckled breast.

There alarm call sounds like an old football rattle and we sometimes see him searching for worms on the lawns of the housing estate.

Slugs and snails’ are part and parcel of gardening life but the song thrushes eat a lot of these and are the gardeners’ friends.

I avoid using slug pellets as overtime this can build up in the systems of birds and poison them. This is also true for hedgehogs and having a few nibbled plants is compensated by having thrushes and hedgehogs.

“Starling” Countryside and wildlife matters with Rupert Butler For many the humble starling is a nuisance they can do without, especially during the breeding season when they are both noisy and messy. They can be particularly irritable in farm settings where several breeding pairs may occupy the same farm out building, forming a loose colony of sorts. Although frowned upon in humanoid society it is however quite acceptable for male Starlings to frequent the abodes of more than one female, sometimes several.

Right, now for the good points. Starlings are by nature incredible mimics, not only of other birds but also of daily nuisances such as sirens and

alarms. Many moons ago whilst I was out for a wee wander beside some water meadows I could hear the haunting voice of a lone Curlew somewhere nearby, but for the life of me couldn’t trace his whereabouts.

Low and behold wasn’t it none other than a cheeky Starling sitting in a nearby tree mimicking one of these long billed waders, at my expense no doubt. Although resident throughout the year we do get massive influxes of migratory birds from continental Europe during the colder months.

When Starlings flock together at this time of the year than perform one of the greatest shows in the natural world.

Just as the light begins to fade thousands of Starlings take to the air to perform acrobatics that are nothing short of mesmerising. Known as murmurations these short flights are a joy to behold and are spectacular in the extreme.

In ancient Rome these murmurations were closely observed for they were thought to hold messages from the gods, whether they were favourable or unfavourable ones. .

So there you have it, Starlings can be both annoying and electric in equal measures, but never boring. Rightly or wrongly they will always demand your attention.

The cat is out of the bag

ournalism and democracy were given a badly needed boost recently when Tipp FM local radio in Tipperary interviewed a high profile GP about Covid and its controversial peripherals.

Tipp FM presenter Fran Curry did an excellent job in a lively half an hour exchange with the outspoken Oulart, Wexford GP Dr Billy Ralph, a highly respected medic who pulled no punches when he slammed so-called pandemic lockdowns and masks and lashed out at a situation where an old lady was jailed for not wearing a face mask.

The interview was significant on many fronts but most especially because the very civilized and interesting presentation of questions and answers broke a censorship mold that disgraced the profession of journalism and all its ethics and in my view leaves the Fourth Estate in a mess from which it may never recover.

By opening its newsroom to open debate, Tipp FM will have heartened the likes of Dr Gerry Waters, Dr Peter McCullagh, Dr

Robert Malone, journalists John Waters and Aisling O’Loughlin, podcaster Gerry O’Neill, Thomastown accountant Patrick E. Walsh and the Irish Enquirer who battled to inform the public that there are two sides to the story that has been ignored by mainstream media. All spoke about the possible dangers of vaccine but were not reported on by national or local media.

The interview marks a brave and perhaps timely breakthrough as a war of words rages about the value or otherwise of vaccines in which some medics describe vaccines as life savers while others criticize those who administer the socalled jab that they believe may be responsible for countless deaths of young and old worldwide.

Like the Skibbereen Eagle at another time, a Cork local newspaper that warned the then Tsar of Russia that it was watching him closely, Tipp FM may be remembered by generations as a news organ that saw the light of democracy and fair play as others favoured shut eyes.

It just may be dubbed the local

broadcaster that fired the first shots that may help to retrieve even a smidgen of respectability for a profession that has failed miserably to give any coverage to ‘extra deaths’ in Kilkenny, Kiltimagh and Kansas City and throughout the so-called civilized world.

The belief among those who may not favour the jab is that it is Big Pharma and big Pharma alone that gains billions of dollars, euros or whatever currency by flogging what is being described as an untried vaccine.

Meanwhile as ‘extra deaths’ continue to leave hundreds of thousands of families shattered, a war that we thought we would never experience continues to hot up between one time colleagues in medicine; politicians are going around with their eyes and minds closed and the press, newspapers radio stations and television stations are being branded as traitors for failing to report on what many will say is the biggest news story for generations.

In Kilkenny there has been no coverage of ‘extra deaths’ in the

Kilkenny Observer or Kilkenny People.

Not a peep has come from the commercial radio KCLR while community radio coverage has been limited to a single interview.

Sadly, our city that for generations was regarded as one of the great homes of journalism and writing generally is now discredited as scribes have let down themselves, their profession and most disappointing of all they have turned their backs on the general public by depriving people from the truth in the news at a time when fear still haunts so many who don’t know what professionals to trust and they are left with a cursed puzzle: to jab or not to jab?

The conclusion has to be that those who would want our country’s journalists muzzled for

their greedy wants and ambitions are winning a war that will soon have us on a par with places like Russia and North Korea where news people are silenced or murdered as the world of dirty deeds thrives.

Now that Tipp FM has done the decent thing by agreeing to give coverage to both sides of a Covid Conundrum that has divided families, one wonders if any others will have the courrage to bear their souls by finally respecting

the ethics of journalism which, bluntly, they have been giving the two fingers to.

As a journalist and newspaper editor for nigh 54 years I feel sad, disappointed and angry. The noble art of journalism has served us better than that.

By agreeing to censorship, I believe journalists, with notable exceptions, have peed on the powder.

God forgive them. That is their only hope.

Cahir and District William Rochfort Lecture Lions Club The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank the town of Cahir and surrounding areas for the continued support throughout last year. With this generous support at Christmas the Cahir and District Lions Club were able to distribute Christmas food hampers in aid of local food appeals and other needs.

Gourmet Christmas hampers containing homemade cake, Christmas pudding, mince pies, chocolate logs, ginger cake, wines, whiskey and much much more were distributed.

Prints of Cahir framed by Laurie Williamson were gifted too.

Cahir Day Care Centre gave a big thank you to Patsy McGurk and Maurice Quinlan of Cahir and District Lions Club for gifting them with fabulous hampers for St. Bridget’s day where everyone had something lovely to take home with them on the day. There were 50 hampers distributed over

the course of last week.

The Club have successfully fundraised for 2 more Defibrillators that are accessible for people to use in Cahir, with one on the Square on the library wall and the one Daybreak (Texaco) on the Mitchelstown Road.

The bookshop in Commercial House on the Square is still going strong with all proceeds towards Lions Club appeals.

Over the past year all of the Lions Clubs across District 133 have been raising funds for Childhood Cancer Ireland including Cahir and District Lions Club. Thank you to all who supported this vital fundraiser.

The Lions Club bookshop is open every week from Tuesday onwards, times are 11am - 4pm.

Cahir Social and Historical Society will hold its second lecture of 2024 in Cahir House Hotel on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The lecture will be given

by Margaret O’Sullivan who will talk on ‘William Rochfort: Cahir’s Last Land Agent’.

Rochfort’s life story is well worth telling and will make for a very interesting talk. Rochfort lived in Cahir Abbey House for many years and ran the Shanbally Estate for the O’Callaghan family. Our guest lecturer, Margaret, has done Trojan research on this subject. She also has strong personal connections to Cahir through her grandfather, the late Timmy Looney (of Pearse Street, Cahir) a well-

known local historian. Cahir House Hotel is an appropriate venue for this event given that William resided in Cahir House for a number of years during the late 19 century. While he served as Land Agent for the Cahir Estate, the focus of Margaret’s lecture will be on William Rochfort’s work in this role for the Shanbally Estate given the extensive records which were saved from Shanbally Castle before its controversial destruction in 1960by Margaret’s grandfather, the late Timmy Looney.

The Lecture will start at 8pm and admission is €3 for Members, €5 for Guests and Students are free.

Plenty of personal bests for Cahir Meet & Train Group We have a great crowd joining in for our Couch to 5k which takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. We meet at 7.25pm in Duneske start at 7.30pm sharp.

All newcomers have settled in well and getting on great and we do 5km every night even if it’s walking by the end.

Well done to our more established members that took part in the Annual John Treacy 10 Mile in Dungarvan last weekend. This is a big race on the running calendar and there were a total of 2827 finishers on the day. Well done to the organisers.

There were a lot of personal bests for members on the day and everyone was delighted; it just shows what can be achieved when you have been training with the Cahir Meet & Train Group.

Daughters of Dun Iascaigh Cahir Tidy Towns Can collection still going strong new fundraiser The Daughters of Dún Iascaighs ‘Person from History’ fundraiser Meitheal 21 will take place on March 3 in Cahir House Hotel and will include lunch and entertainment. Tickets are €50 and can be purchased in Cahir House now with all monies raised going to the Meitheal 21 Centre, Down Syndrome Ireland – Tipperary Branch.

The Centre is located in Thurles and is where children, teenagers and adults from all around Tipperary – including Cahir and

surrounding areas – have access to speech, play, occupational and dance therapies. Paul Butler of Cahir and representative from Meitheal 21 described the centre as “vital for our children, teenagers and adults to meet their friends, have fun and feel safe and to enjoy the freedoms others have”.

With the new cans rebate beginning last week, it was thought that this year would be a challenging for the Cahir Tidy Towns can collection. However the Group were back last Saturday morning in the castle car park from 10 -11.15am for the February collection and were pleasantly surprised to collect more cans than ever on the morning!

The Group have agreed with partners ABP to continue with can collections for 2024 and it seems like this was a good idea, as the majority of those who bring cans for recycling have said that they will continue to do so. So keep collecting those drinks can and bring them to the castle car park on the first Saturday of every month. The funds raised will be used to

plant more trees around the town.

The Group now focuses on preparations for their Annual Cahir Tidy Towns Quiz. The Quiz Night is set for Saturday, February 17 and will take place in The Shamrock Lounge, Cahir.

Table of 4 (max) is €20. This is always a great night on the social calendar and the Group hope to see everyone there.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade theme There has been a dark cloud over the town over the last week with the recent and sad passing of some well known stalwarts at such young ages. St. Patrick’s Day would never go ahead without them watching on, driving a machine, taking pictures or having an involvement in their organisation or the colourful outfits.

Unfortunately the year passes quickly and before you know it’s time to start organising this year’s parade once again. For all those who enjoyed the annual outing and have passed on we have named this year’s theme ‘Lights, Cameras, Action’ and hope everyone pumps it up.

This theme is intended to bear in mind those that have passed in recent times and also those who have passed on since last year.

We would encourage all groups in the town to get involved this year and the theme covers all angles so let’s make it colourful and whether it’s a mad outfit or

a vintage tractor we want to see you at 12 noon on Sunday March 17 from Cahir Business Park.

We encourage all local groups and organisations to pull out all the stops to commemorate their memory.

Mind Matters A Blueprint for Practical Wellbeing

Motivation – How to Ignite Your Inner Spark and Boost Productivity I’ve said it before now. Why is it that we’re so good at knowing what to do and rubbish at actually doing it? Have you got the procrastination bug? Do you make to-do lists you ignore or set goals you never expect to achieve?

Are you seriously demotivated right now? Don’t panic. There are things you can do today to reignite your inner spark.

What is Motivation?

All of us have different things that motivate us. Some people get fired up by a motivational speech, others from running 10k every day. For some people competition drives them to be better versions of themselves whilst for others comparison demotivates them.

Not everyone has the same motivation drivers, and this impacts how we push ourselves.

So what exactly is this thing called motivation? Motivation is like a force, an inner spark, that helps us direct our behaviours towards achieving goals. Motivation is a key aspect of human behaviour, driving us towards personal and professional fulfillment and that is why so much time has been dedicated to understanding it.

Not Feeling It? 4 Ways to Overcome Lack of Motivation 1.

Surround yourself with the right people. If you’re entrpreneurial, spend time with other entrepreneurs, join a business group, buy a course to meet others who think like you. As all parents of teens will know, the people you hang out with generally dictate the type of person you become. If you’re surrounded by people with the

same goals and aims as you, it makes it far easier to do what you need to do. Research shows that we develop the habits of those we spend most time with.

2.

Reward yourself for getting things done. This is a no-brainer. If you set a task for yourself in a given day, make sure to reward yourself once you check it off your list. A jog, a glass of wine, a bath – have some rewards in place.

3.

Work on staying positive. Recent research suggests that staying motivated may be all about mood management.

Negative emotions, like fear or anxiety, can get in the way of motivation (although fear can be a driver of success too). In a study of university students, the ones who procrastinated most suffered lower moods and spent time they could have spent studying, trying to cheer themselves up with distractions. Being optimistic and improving how you feel about yourself will impact your motivation levels for the better. It explains why military recruits are taught ways to stay optimistic.

Find yourself an accountability partner with shared interests. Agree that you’ll hold each other accountable for getting things done. It’s easier if someone outside of yourself is keeping an eye out and motivating you.

Motivation at Work Everyone has their own distinct internal and external motivation drivers in attaining goals. Internal (intrinsic) motivation at work refers to being motivated by internal sources. It could mean you do something because it’s

pleasurable, the pleasure of doing something you love, or it might be value-driven, like doing charity work because it aligns with your personal values. At work people are motivated intrinsically by having a personal interest in the job, having autonomy and control and a sense of purpose. Other intrinsic motivation drivers might be working for an inspiring leader.

External (extrinsic) motivation at work is motivation that comes from outside us. The obvious examples are when people do things for a wage, or a bonus or medical care is a huge extrinsic motivator in the US system. This system is less motivational for people who are self-motivated and passionate about what they do. Such people might want more than job security and a wage but are seeking fulfilment, control, autonomy, and a sense of purpose in life.

Human Motivation Theory McClelland’s Human Motivation Theory states that each of us has one of three main driving motivators: the need for power, achievement or affiliation. People who are motivated by power like to control others and be in charge.

Achievers likes to solve problems and achieve goals. Affiliators don’t like to stand out or take risks and value relationships above anything else. Understanding motivators is important because it helps us to know how to encourage others effectively (at work with colleagues, at home with children or partners) and invite them to do things in a way that inspires them to do it well.

Techniques to Bring Motivation to Work If your motivation style isn’t being activated what do you do?

Consider firstly what motivates you to do something you really like? Now how do you bring that enthusiasm into the workplace?

1.

Understand your own motivation drivers in order to achieve higher performance. It’s difficult for managers to know your motivators if you don’t know them yourself so think carefully about what motivates you in your work and your life. If you need positive feedback to stay motivated at work or coming up with exciting new ideas about the business is your thing, let people around you know. Being self-aware maximises your career potential, keeps you energised and pushes you in the right direction.

2.

Motivation is not a given every day. You will have days when you’re less motivated.

If you know your drivers, you can try to ensure that your motivation factors are being met.

3.

Manage your expectations. Work is work and hobbies are hobbies. Work may not tick all the boxes in the same way as a game of golf, but it serves an important function in other ways. Accept that your hobby may excite you more than work but you’re unlikely to make the kind of money you want from playing golf. Try to unplug fully from work in your downtime so you feel re-energised on your return to work.

The Motivational Funnel – A

Process to Get Things Done A key part of progress is getting things done but little time is spent at school or at work to teach us how to get things done.

The process of making a to-do list and then navigating through it rationally until the tasks are complete is what I call the motivational funnel. Knowing this process can help us to stay motivated and on track to achieve our goals.

First off write down everything that you need to get done, then do the following: • Check that everything on the list needs to be there – delete it if it doesn’t. Some things on the list will diminish in importance over time with the result that quite often you can remove things from the list that are no longer key to achieving your goals.

• Scan the list that’s left, are you trying to tackle too many disparate goals at once?

Be realistic about what you can get done. Remove from the list goals that can best be left to when you’ve mastered the first one. Stick them on a secondary list that you will tackle later.

• With the list that’s left, get some quick wins to motivate yourself. It’s encouraging to tick things off your list so do a few easy tasks first. Make a quick telephone call, sign up to a free writing course. Done. Constantly review the tasks you’re doing to ensure that they are moving you towards achieving your ultimate goal.

• With the list that’s left, tackle each item to the best of your ability. Don’t aim for perfection

because it’s a sure way to prevent you from tackling anything..

• Don’t panic if some things remain on your list for weeks. Eventually they will either get done as a matter of some urgency or they will fall off the list as no longer pertinent to your goals.

• With experience your to-do list will become shorter.

Many successful entrepreneurs have up to three things on their list every day.

• I write my to-do list the night before. That way I can do my easy-wins very quickly when I wake up then get started on my main task for the day.

• Forget multi-tasking. I say this a lot! Multi-tasking makes us less productive. Focus on one thing, do it to the best of your ability then tick it off the list.

• Check your social media at set times throughout your weekdays. It’s too easy to get trapped in a never-ending spiral of replying, deleting, watching videos and then wonder where the time has gone.

In Conclusion People often say that motivation doesn’t last but neither does muscle tone, so it’s important to exercise daily. Stay on top of motivation by being with people who make you better than you are, having rewards in place for when you get a win and working on feeling positive. But motivation is still not a given, we all have off days. You can’t count on motivation alone to get things done. Be disciplined. You can count on discipline. Utimately this will help you to achieve your goals which will re-ignite your inner spark all over again.

Tipperariana Book of the Year The Fethard Historical Society hosted the presentation of the Tipperariana Book of the Year Award for 2023, on Thursday last, February 2, 2024. The recipient was Dr. Willie Nolan, for his twovolume history: Vol 1 ‘Remember ‘48: Young Ireland and the Rising’ and Vol 2 ‘‘Remember ‘48: Young Irelanders Beyond The Rising.’

Dr Nolan is a well-known Tipperary historian, hailing originally from Coalbrook, Ballingarry, a former Associate Professor of Geography at University College Dublin, and the founder of Geography Publications. Local history buffs will be pleased to learn that Dr. Willie Nolan will be present at the upcoming Tipperariana Book Fair in the Ballroom, Fethard, from 12 noon until 4.30pm next Sunday,

February 11, 2024. There will be ample opportunity to meet the author, peruse the volumes and purchase a wonderful addition to one’s collection of Tipperary books.

Michael Mallon, Chairperson, Fethard Historical Society, began by welcoming those present. “On this very special occasion of the awarding of the Tipperariana Book of the Year 2023, it gives me great pleasure to welcome Dr. Willie Nolan, and his wife Theresa. It is an honour to be graced by such an accomplished author, publisher, historian and academic”.

Present also among Dr. Willie Nolan’s friends and supporters were Mary Guinan Darmody and Mary McCormack, Tipperary Studies, Tipperary County

Library; senior historian Paddy O’Connell, Ballingarry ‘48 Commemorative Committee; Dr. Tom McGrath, Ballingarry; and Dr. Proinsias Ó Drisceoil, NUIM, Kilkenny.

Terry Cunningham then took the floor to explain how the Tipperariana Book of the Year Award came about. “Our committee had been exploring the possibility of acknowledging the calibre of books produced each year in County Tipperary and the publication of the three-volume Moyne-Templetuohy Parish History was the spur we needed to found the Award in 2002. Willie Nolan’s comprehensive study of the 1848 Rising, is in fact the twenty second publication to receive this award”. Congratulating Dr. Nolan on the superb production of such

a scholarly history of the 1848 Rising, Terry commended him for the breadth of knowledge and the range of detail therein.

The Tipperariana Book of the Year Award takes a different form each year. When the committee has made their selection the Society commissions local ceramicist Dóirín Saurus to create a customised piece that pays tribute to the chosen book. As always, Dóirín rose to this year’s challenge with her own unique flair and creativity. The inscribed ceramic piece was surmounted with a miniature replica of the Widow McCormack’s cottage.

It was then the author’s turn to talk, and he charted his own personal journey from youth in Slieveardagh, working in Dublin and Birmingham, studying in Dublin before forging a career in academia. He held fast, throughout, to his love of history and his fascination with the story of 1848, a story he felt was much overlooked and long neglected.

It is fair to say that his book ‘Remember 48: Young Ireland and the Rising’ successfully redresses that omission, giving a comprehensive account of the

Rising, those involved and the aftermath. It is a valuable addition to the local, county and, indeed, national historical archive.

In her concluding remarks, Mary Hanrahan, P.R.O., Fethard Historical Society, thanked Dr. Willie Nolan for his most illuminating talk. She also thanked Olga Chernabrodskaya, Manager, the Fethard Horse Country Experience, for facilitating the event, stating that the historic former Town Hall is a wonderful venue for such occasions.

The evening closed with light refreshments and the opportunity to engage with the author.

Patient Overflow from Fine Gael Selects Eleanor UHL to Nenagh Hospital Maher as Candidate for Nenagh Electoral Area Resulting in Increasing Day Surgery Cancellations - Lowry While University Hospital Limerick continues to rank as one of the busiest hospitals in the country, the huge volume of patients requiring medical care at the hospital is having a growing knock-on effect on patient treatment at Nenagh Hospital.

‘This is a direct result of the continued transfer of medical patients from Limerick Hospital to Nenagh, and the need to accommodate these patients in beds in the Surgical Day Ward. When these beds are in use by the transferred patients, it results in the cancellation of planned Day Surgery in Nenagh Hospital, causing chaos with planned procedures and waiting lists’ says Deputy Michael Lowry.

‘This is not acceptable and I have contacted Senior Management at the HSE requesting and immediate review of this short-

sighted policy’ he says.

‘Nenagh Hospital provides a wide range of Day Surgeries, including cataract treatment, orthopaedic surgery, gynaecological procedures, urology and vascular procedures and many other planned elective surgeries. Patients are advised well in advance of their procedures and have made the necessary arrangements for their time in hospital and their aftercare.

‘There are reports of patients receiving a call a short time before their admission to the Day Ward to tell them that their planned and necessary procedure is cancelled. This is causing anguish and upset to patients and their families. .

So far in this year alone, between 8th -14th January both Theatres at Nenagh Hospital were closed and there were no

patients admitted to the Day Ward. Up to and including Monday, January 26th, the full list of surgical procedures went ahead only on January 15th and 16th.

‘The cancellation and deferment of Day Surgeries for patients is totally unacceptable’ says Deputy Lowry. ‘Many patients, including elderly men and women, worry that delayed medical intervention will compromise their health.

Such neglect of patients is shortterm thinking that, along with causing major inconvenience and stress to patients, also causes disruption and frustration to Specialist Surgical staff who find themselves redeployed to other areas of the Hospital.

‘Ultimately, the continued cancellation of planned procedures will have a negative knock-on effect on the Day Care Unit in Nenagh’ he concludes.

Fine Gael has chosen Eleanor Maher as its candidate for the Nenagh Electoral Area in the upcoming 2024 local elections set for June. The selection convention, led by Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell, was held at the Ardcroney Community Centre, with the presence of Sen Garret Ahearn and councillors Phyll Bugler, Ger Darcy, and Noel Coonan.

Originally from Carney, Puckane’s parish, Eleanor Maher has been actively involved in various community initiatives, serving as the manager of the Ardcroney, Carrigahorig, and Milford Group Water Schemes. Additionally, she is a committee member of the Carney Village Community Group, the Rural Water Monitoring Programme, and the Tipperary Federation of Group Water Schemes, overseeing the delivery of quality water to 360 homes and businesses.

Maher has spearheaded numerous successful projects, including the replacement of the water supply source in Ardcroney and critical mains replacement near

Carrigahorig. Her efforts have been instrumental in securing

for families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities,

grant funding through the local authority from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHGLH), significantly enhancing water quality and leak control in the communities.

Expressing her ambition to represent her hometown, Maher stated, “My ambition now is to bring the experience I have gained on a local level, to represent the people and the area that I grew up in.” She emphasised her commitment to ensuring a high quality of life for Nenagh and its surrounding areas, particularly

Clonoulty National School take music show to Cashel The boys and girls of the national school in Clonoulty come into Cashel this week to put on their fabulous school production of “Any Dream Will Do”at Brú Ború on Thursday and Friday night. The production is based on the music of Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice’s world famous musical, “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and the children and staff of the school have spent months preparing for what will no doubt

be an excellent performance as they always give. They are delighted to be bringing the show to the famous stage at Brú Ború, which will give them huge scope to show off their talents in wonderful surroundings.

The curtain goes up on the two nights at 7:30pm and is not to be missed. Tickets are still available from the school on 089-2541671 and 0504-42029. Snap them up and enjoy what will be a magical night of music and song.

Young local author scoops international contract with first book becoming a best seller It’s a story that could almost be a book in itself, but nine-year-old local school boy Oliver Browne saw a young dream fulfilled when his first book not only was published but sold out within twenty four hours of going on sale this week. The story began even earlier as he wrote the majority of the book, “A Cat has Eight Kittens” when he was just seven years of age. The genesis of the tale began when Oliver would sit with his father, also named Oliver at their home in Golden, while Oliver Snr was writing assignments for a college course in Health and Safety.

The younger Browne began to pile up the sheets of written paper, and when his mother Carmel read what was being written, she asked her husband to cast his eye over the story. Impressed with the tales, he sent the book to an Irish publisher, who told him that while they did not print children’s books, they felt it was good enough to be looked at by one of their international partners and the manuscript landed on the desk of Austen Mc Cauley publishers. Given the massive competition that exists in children’s publishing, that might have been the end of the matter, so the family was more than surprised, shocked even when they received correspondence

Family affair as Larkspur Pitch and Putt Winter League comes to climax There were celebrations in the Mc Grath household last week when two brothers, Michael and Paddy, along with Micheal’s son Darren picked up the trophy at the end of this years hotly contested Pitch and Pitch Winter league played in Larkspur Park. This was the second year in a row that Darren, one of the top pitch and putt players in the county, got his hands onthe cup, but it was made all the more special this time around when he could share it with his family. did, amazingly beating a fourth Mc Grath, his brother Joey on the fifteenth hole to clinch the win.

Joey was crestfallen, watching his sibling and nephew receive the cup from club captain Derek Skelly but told them he’d be back next year, maybe after snaffling Darren who’ll be going for the three in a row. Overall great sport was had and it added a fine bookend to a great season of pitch and putt and the Cashel venue, which turns this year to preparing for the All Ireland Championships which will be played at the club later in the year

back for Mc Cauley’s along with a contract to sign, so that the book could go to print.

And so, it did, along with beautiful illustrations and an advertising push by the publishers across a host of online selling platforms, most notably Amazon. Not only that, but the book was printed in thirteen different languages and heavily promoted, to the point where the first edition of the book sold out within twenty-four hours and has now gone to a second edition print. Speaking this week on the popular local radio program Tipp Today on Tipp FM, Oliver and his parents said that they were blown away by first of all the writing ability shown in the book, but also by the response and the sales. They were delighted that locals got behind their son and hope that the success will continue into the future, with hopes that it might even be turned into a film or animated series. There is already another in the series planned, with the family of cats having a Christmas adventure that will hit the shelves later on this year. For the time being, young Oliver is taking his success in his stride, along with his younger brother Gerard in the small West Tipperary village. His love of writing has only been enhanced

and he says he has lots more ideas for upcoming plots and twists in the stories, which should make for interesting reading in the future.

There was a huge scramble last week to apply for council housing in Cashel, when the council announced that eight newly constructed houses were being made available in Aenghus Court,at the top of Boherclough Street, via the councils Choice Based Letting scheme. The date of the announcement was highly anticipated, and within twenty-four hours, hundreds of applications had been made, with many others seeking information on the eligibility criteria for getting on the list.

There is an acute housing crisis in the town, with the most recent figures suggesting over 200 people are on the council list, havingrequested Cashel as the

area they wish to be housed in.

Over the past decade or so, very little council housing has come on stream in the town, with it more than fifteen years since the last significant local community housing developments being completed at Castlegreen and in Windmill. Rents for private accommodation in the town have also soared in recent times, so the need for suitable affordable housing has become especially acute, as it has done nationwide.

This is what leads to the surge in the applications last week, with many of those who applied also very angry over the lack of transparency in how the council allocated housing in the past, and with how they may choose

to allocate these houses in the future. While anyone eligible for the housing must be on a local authority housing list, housing does not get allocated on a “next in line”basis, meaning some people have been waiting for over a decade and are still not any way closer to knowing when they will be housed, if ever. This has been a cause of frustration for years, and while everyone wishes the eight new families the best of wishes when they are allocated the houses involved, there will be hundreds of others who will be back to square one in their search.

Everyone hopes that the powers that be can get a handle on this and change the situation in the near future.

TALK OF THE TOWN IN

There’s nothing better in sport, than when the outsider, the little guy, the one who upsets the odds, comes good and produces a big win. And that was what happened at Clonmel Racing track last Saturday night, when Cashel man David Hickey put his dog Tailteann Syd into the traps in the Elite Canine Transport Stake Trophy. And Syd delivered in spades.

Running a fantastic race from trap to tape in a time of 29.04, he scorched the field and had the Cashel mans connections whopping for joy. David trains a number of dogs, and like all trainers puts a huge amount of work and detail in getting an owner’sdog to the starting gate in the finest of fettle to give them the best chance

of victory. And he’s always looking for, the diamond in the rough that will turn out to be a champion.

Last weekend he delivered that,

but the search will continue like it always does. For now, David deserves the congratulations and the best of wishes for the future.

Local business expands with second store opening Friday was a momentous day for local business owner John Ryan, when he opened a second store to add to his expanding stove and fireplace business in Newbridge. Based in Cashel, John originally began fitting heating products, before he took the plunge and opened a small workshop on the Dualla Road in 2012, with a staff of six people.

From the beginning, it was a tight knit family run business, but as it expanded, it needed a bigger premises and showroom, and he opened his current store in Cashel on the old Cahir Road in 2018, and thankfully business has been thriving since then.

Cashel Stove and Fireplace fitters currently employ a staff of fifteen

people, and hopefully will add to that number working out of the Cashel store in the near future.

But that success created more opportunities and the business took them when they made the decision to open a second store in Kildare in the middle of last year. That plan came to fruition last week when the doors of the new business opened in Newbridge. While some of the Cashel staff have moved to smooth the opening of the new store, it is hoped that within a number of years, the number of staff overall will have doubled and more employment will be created. But it is not all business with John, and he and his business have been very

conscious of being rooted in the local community and supporting that community. The business has been proud supporters of many local clubs, including Cashel Camogie club, Tipperary Hockey and sponsoring kit and equipment for both primary and secondary schools in the area.

They were also very involved in charity work, notably around the Covid period, when they made their company vans available to local organisations like the Meals on Wheels groups, as well as other charitable causes.

Overall, the business has been a fantastic local success story, providing employment and service, and we wish it all the best into the future.

Huge anger in Cashel over water outages last week There was huge anger all over Cashel and in many of the surrounding areas last week, because of frequent water outages, and long periods of low pressure in the water system. Many businesses were forced to close or turn customers away, and households suffered significant inconvenience.

The nub of the problem seemed to be the laying of new pipework’s in the town

by Irish Water, but poor communication before and during the works, was blamed for the majority of the anger that people felt from the

middle of the week right through to the weekend.

Local community activist Liam Browne said that he had fielded numerous calls from members of the public, trying to find out the reason behind the outages and how long they were likely to last, and that when he tried to get this information from Irish Water or the local council, it was almost impossible to get answers. Liam said that “it was simply unacceptable for Irish Water to put a notice that they were turning the water off on their website, and not use more widespread media

to communicate. They cannot expect people to be checking the company’s website on a constant basis, which means that the first many people knew of the outages, was when they turned on their taps and nothing came out.

Had proper notice been given in the traditional and social media, the public and business community at least could have made plans to mitigate the problems they faced”.

Liam went on to say that “any upgrading works done on the water system, is a good thing. Having a more modern system is crucial to

the town, especially as it is expanding. But turning off the water without notice, just is not acceptable”. He also said that in areas outside Cashel, such as the Racecourse Cross, Boytownrath and Killastafford, have had ongoing problems now for months that were being ignored, and really need to be sorted out. Long term, there is going to have to be a proper discussion over who controls the distribution of water in Tipperary, either Irish Water or the county council. Because now no one seems to be taking responsibility for it.”

New Business Park in Tipperary Town

Plans to develop a new business park in Tipperary Town took a major step forward recently with the proposed development being granted full planning permission by Tipperary County Council.

The development which consists of the demolition of an existing vacant restaurant and the construction of seven new light industrial units, will be located on the Bansha Road, and will bring approximately 19,000 square feet of new enterprise space to the market. It is hoped that the development will act as a catalyst for new business, investment, and job creation

in the town.

The project is being led

by Cork based developer Fitzgerald Partnership, who have significant business interests throughout the country. The lack of available industrial space has long been an issue in the town, and the planning application was supported by submissions to that effect from several local bodies including Jobs4Tipp, Tipperary Chamber of Commerce, Tipperary Town Revitalisation and the Local Enterprise Office Tipperary.

Construction is expected to commence in the coming months with the new units to be ready for market in 2025.

Large crowd at Tipperary Town Community Energy Fair A crowd of over fifty people attended the recent Community Energy Fair in Tipperary Town to

hear about the Tipperary Town Community Energy Plan, and the supports and grants available to

homeowners, businesses, and community groups to implement climate adaptation projects. The event was held in the Tipperary Excel Centre on Thursday January 18th and was organised by Tipperary Town Revitalisation and Tipperary Tidy Towns, who jointly commissioned the Town Energy Plan under the SEAI funded Sustainable E n e r g y Communities ( S E C ) Programme.

ORS Consultants, took attendees through the Plan which found that the town had an estimated annual energy spend in excess of €30m, and that there are over 2,000 homes in and around the town that would be suitable for deep retrofitting. This would keep a significant sum of money in the local economy, while contributing to climate mitigation and addressing fuel poverty issues.

Programme Manager, who gave details of the various grants available from SEAI, from Marie O’Donnell, Tipp County Council Climate Action Office, who took attendees through the €700k Community Climate Action Fund, which is currently open to community groups until February 27th, and from Ita Horan, Local Enterprise Office Tipperary, who spoke about the broad range of supports available through the Local Enterprise

Office, which include the Green for Business Programme aimed at driving sustainability and costs savings within the business sector. Katie Lonergan from Tipperary Education and Training Board, also highlighted the range of courses provided by the ETB locally in the Construction Skills Training Centre on the Bansha Road which includes Drylining, Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB), Insulation, Plastering, Tiling and

others. Paul O’Callaghan, Chairperson of Tipperary Tidy Towns, felt that the event was a huge success “It is great to see such a huge turnout and it demonstrates how people are becoming more climate conscious. We all have a responsibility to move towards a more sustainable way of living and this Energy Plan sets out a roadmap for the town for the coming months and years which we will be working hard to progress” said Paul.

Tipperary Town Revitalisation calls for town centre location for new Post Office Tipperary Town Revitalisation has called on An Post to ensure that the postal service currently provided by An Post in Tipperary Town Post Office remains in the town centre going forward. An Post recently let staff at the Tipperary Town branch know that they intend to advertise for a retail partner or contractor to run the service in the future, and that this will likely be at a new location in the town.

The company states that this will not result in a loss of service, and that staff currently employed by An Post at the Post Office will have the option to be redeployed or could take up employment with the new postmaster once they are

appointed.

A statement provided by Tipperary Town Revitalisation on their social media account addresses the issue. “We are disappointed with this news over the past week and send our thoughts and best wishes to the management and staff who will be affected. We have discussed the matter with An Post and have asked them to stipulate town centre location as one of the criteria in the upcoming tender as they seek a retail partner to deliver the service in the future. Tipperary has a very low rate of car ownership comparative to other towns, with the Census 2022 showing that nearly 30% of households in the town have no access

to a car. The figure across the rest of the county is 11%. The town also has very high comparative rates of disability and disadvantage, meaning more people depend on services like those currently provided by An Post to be available and accessible on foot and in the town centre than in most other towns. It would be a devastating blow to these people and to the town if the service is not retained in the middle of town where people need it. We will continue to advocate alongside other stakeholders on the issue and will make every effort to ensure that a suitable alternative location is found in Tipperary town centre” concluded the statement.

Daniel Ryan selected to sing as member of World Youth Choir We are delighted to hear that Daniel Ryan from Tipperary town has been selected to sing as a member of the World Youth Choir.

The international jury has chosen 93 singers from 45 countries and Daniel Ryan has been chosen to represent Ireland. He will tour Europe and sing with the World Youth Choir in Concerts in Germany, The Netherlands, Italy and Austria from August 18th until September 8th, 2024.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel is a son of Michael John and Siobhán Ryan from the Danny Ryan Music Shop in Tipperary Town. Daniel auditioned and was selected from applicants from all over the world. The international

jury used a process of selecting candidates regarding their voice range, sight reading abilities, vocal technical skills, ability to prepare a piece and voice performance. Daniel will now begin rehearsals in Weikersheim (Germany) to prepare for this once in a lifetime honour. His father, Michael John Ryan, said that they are ‘over the moon’ and that congratulations are coming in from all over the world, not to mention from family and friends in Tipperary. Daniel has been studying music and especially voice for many years and now is in first year studying for a Bachelor of Music Degree at The Cork School of Music (M.T.U).

The late Bridget Murphy, 1 Iona Avenue, Thurles Thurles locals and in particular those living in and around Iona Avenue were deeply saddened by the passing of well known and popular Bridget Murphy who was laid to rest in St Patrick’s Cemetery this week, alongside her husband, the late Tipperary All-Ireland winning senior hurling captain Michael Murphy.

Bridget, nee Ely, was very highly regarded in the community and was the kind of person who would go out of her way to help others. She had the reputation for being a kind and caring neighbour and was never one to shy away from hard work when it was necessary. Indeed, she often went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to helping neighbours and friends and the Murphy household in 1 Iona Avenue was a place where the door was always open – she operated a very successful hairdressing business for

many too and was regarded as a very professional and skilled hairdresser who was never afraid to try out new styles and trends for customers.

Bridget and the late Michael reared their family – sons Paul, Aidan and Michael, and daughter Fiona and Ciara – in a very loving and caring environment in the family home. But, they were determined to allow each of the family members to find their own independence too and as they made their way in life, they were there to support, assist and advise them whenever necessary.

Bridget and Michael delighted in their grandchildren and loved watching them grow and develop into young adults as they kept up to date with all of the various sports, projects and activities in which they were involved.

Following Michael’s passing in January 2018, Bridget maintained that great interest in her

Should Clare or Waterford find themselves in the Munster senior hurling final this year, the final will be hosted in Thurles by FBD Semple Stadium following a decision of the Munster Council this week.

The decision made with regard to venues for future Finals in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship sees a rota being put in place for finals involving Clare and / or Waterford with the stipulation that these games must be played at a neutral venue. The only possibility of a final featuring Tipperary being played in Semple Stadium would be Tipp vs Limerick.

For many years Mick and Bridget were regular visitors to near-by Bowe’s and Dunnes public houses and they loved nothing more than meeting up with family, neighbours and friends and enjoying great chats, sing-songs and craic as they chewed over the fat of the week. With Micks interest in, and involvement with, Thurles Sarsfields, there was always plenty to talk about – he was also a founding member of Dúrlas Óg juvenile GAA club – and his involvement in the club long after his playing days ended, could only have been possible with the support of Bridget at home.

She kept the welcoming and warm home in order and ensured that all of the necessities were in place for the family.

Bridget Murphy will be

missed in Iona Avenue and in Thurles.

Her passing is most deeply regretted by her loving sons Paul, Aidan and Michael, daughters Fiona and Ciara, grandchildren, s o n s - i n law Thomas and Mark, daug hters-inlaw Valerie, Tracy and Breda, brother Billy, sisters Nell and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

Indeed, her popularity was reflected in the attendance at Kennedy’s Funeral Home, Dubin Road, Thurles as she lay in repose before her funeral cortege made its way to Bohernanave Church for Requiem Mass. There

again, a large attendance witnessed a celebration of the life of Bridget Murphy before she was conveyed to St Patrick’s Cemetery where she was laid to rest.

In the company of her husband Mick, may she now enjoy the peace of Heaven she strived for throughout her life.

Minister to tackle The late Martin Doherty, An Post over Liberty Hillview Drive, Thurles Square building The Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan has pledged to raise the issue of the vacant former Post Office on Liberty Square with An Post as a matter of urgency.

Speaking in Dáil Éireann week after he had been questioned by Tipperary’s Fianna Fáil TD, Deputy Jackie Cahill, Minister Ryan said: “I will happily take this matter to the Minister and also to An Post in relation to this issue. We do not want State buildings lying vacant and I will raise the matter with the company myself.”

Deputy Cahill told Minister Ryan:” It is completely unacceptable

that a semi-Stare body like An Post would leave a pivotal building in the centre of Thurles town idle. This government has invested significantly in the redevelopment of Liberty Square through the urban regeneration fund and I would urge the Minster to put pressure on An Post to get a commercial outlet for this premises as soon as possible as it is dampening the commercial prospects of the centre of town. After the huge investment we have had in Liberty Square it is really downgrading the Square to have significant building idle.”

Despite huge public protest at the time, An Post vacated

Deputy Jackie Cahill the town centre building a number of years ago and opened a new office offering enhanced services in Thurles Shopping Centre. The Liberty Square building has been idle since much to the chagrin of all businesses in the town centre.

‘Cut VAT and PRSI Rates for Struggling SMEs by Easter’ says Lowry When Deputy Michael Lowry addressed the Dáil last month concerning the dramatic level of closures across the Hospitality and SME sectors, he said that some Government decisions had ‘unintended consequences’ and, if not revisited, the shutters would fall on many more cafes, restaurants, shops and vital community hubs in the month ahead.

He referred at that time to his previous representations to Government concerning the dramatic level of closures across the Hospitality and SME Sector, reiterating that it is absolutely crucial and essential that the Government brings forward changes for this sector.

Now Deputy Lowry, along with his colleagues in The Regional Group of TDs, are calling for the reduction of the current VAT rate of 13.5% to 9% for food businesses in the hospitality sector before Easter.

In a Private Member Motion before the Dáil this week, they also say that adjusting the 8.8% employer’s PRSI threshold to a ceiling wage of €495.30 per week will be a lifeline for many businesses.

Collectively, the members

of The Regional Group of TDs support Small and Medium Enterprises, that are struggling to keep their doors open due to recent Government charges and in recognition of the vital role that these businesses play in our local economy and communities.

The Regional Group’s motion calls on the Government to immediately establish a Task Force that is representative of small businesses and includes Government Departments and Agencies. Such a Task Force should be personally Chaired by the Cabinet Minister, and aim to review the application of all Government controlled costs and to reduce Government charges and costs of doing business.

The Regional Group of TDs notes that providing quarterly updates to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise will ensure that this will be a Task Force for action and not talk.

‘SMEs’ are a critical pillar of the Irish economy. The people who create and lead SMEs throughout the country are incredibly diverse and come from family-owned businesses,

rural-owner managers, and traditional to high-growth and technology start-ups.

‘There are more than 1.2 million people employed

by SMEs in Ireland representing 99.8% of active enterprise. Most of these enterprises are micro-sized enterprises, employing less than 10 people.

‘Government policy decisions have increased the cost of doing business significantly, particularly in the SME sector. Many SMEs, including rural and Regional businesses, are facing significant cost challenges.

These increasing input costs due to increases in energy, inflation, insurance, cost of labour, national minimum wage increases, higher PRSI, plans for pension autoenrolment, extended sickpay entitlements on top of VAT increases, along with many other input factors are making it very difficult for small businesses to continue trading.

‘Regional Group members call on the Government to address these business issues now before additional closures occur in the hospitality, retail, travel, food, drink, tourism, and entertainment sectors’.

The late Martin Doherty, Hillview Drive, Thurles who passed away last week was a well known and much respected man in Thurles town and its surrounds – he passed away in the care of staff and management of Ardeen Nursing Home and news of his demise occasioned great sadness in his home town.

Martin worked in Thurles Sugar Factory where he was regarded as a valued colleague. He had a great sense of humour but was serious about his job and loved the camaraderie associated with his post which brought him into contact with so many people. A personable and friendly individual, Martin always had a smile on his face and he would go out of his way to help people if he could at all.

A long time member of the Cathedral Choir in Thurles, Martin also featured on stage with Thurles Musical Society and was a valued member of the chorus where his sweet tenor voice was a real addition in The Student Prince in 1972, Showboat in 1982 and the Desert Song in 1983. He loved the shows

and was a regular attender in the Premier Hall having completed his own stint on stage.

Fittingly, having performed in the gallery on so many occasions, the Cathedral Choir were there to perform at Martin’s funeral Mass and they greatly enhanced the liturgy celebrated by his nephew Fr Connie Doherty, with their singing and playing – he would have been justifiably proud of all of their efforts on his behalf.

In his younger days he hurled on successful Thurles Sarsfields county championship winning sides and was very proud of his successes. He followed the exploits of the Blues from a distance and retained his interest in gaelic games to the very end.

85 years old, Martin was an inoffensive, kind and popular man and the attendance at his funeral reflected this. People came to offer their support and extend sympathy to his wife Josie, who is a native of Toomevara, and to the extended family. Martin was the last surviving member of the highly respected Doherty family and was predeceased

The late Eddie O’Brien who died on Saturday, February 3, 2024 The death has occurred on Saturday, February 3, 2024, of Eddie O’Brien, The Square, Fethard, who passed away peacefully, after a short illness, at Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel. Pre-deceased by his father Edward and mother Annie. Sadly, missed by his brother Patrick, his wife Marilyn, his sister Cathy, his nephew Edward and wife Sarah, and their children Max and Madison, aunts Agnes Evans and Frances Linehan, cousins, extended family and friends.

May He Rest in Peace. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.

Vee Rovers F.C. The Juniors were at home to Peake Villa B in a league game at Scart 0n Sunday. Played in blustery conditions this was a game of two completely different halves. Peake had the advantage of the wind in the first half and pinned the home side into their own for long periods. The

Rovers defence held out for 34 minutes before conceding a goal in scrappy circumstanceses and so got to the interval only one goal behind.

The home side dominated the second half while still being conscious of the danger of the Thurles side on the break.

chances without ever getting back on level terms. Constant pressure on the Peake defence failed to yield a goal despite a concession of ten corners between the 70th and 88th minute. At last another corner in the 90th minute proved fruitful when Kieran Macken headed to the net to give Rovers a share

of the spoils, a result which was accepted as fair by all. Fr David McGuinness R.I.P. The death has occurred recently of Fr David McGuiness after a long illness bravely borne.

He is survived by his sisters Ita, Kathleen, Sr Marie, Olive, brother Denis, his nieces and Nephews, and all his extended

Mental Health Matters

Mental health is complex - what works for one person may not work for the other

I would be extremely reluctant to write an article narrowing down mental health advice to a ‘Top Ten Tips’ list or ‘How to look after your mental health — step by step’, because mental health is much more complex than that.

I think it is impossible for any person to google search on how they can look after their mental health as each individual’s mental health is very different and what works for one, may not work for another.

However, there are some similarities in how we feel emotionally and there is both scientific research as well as personal stories we can draw from, and perhaps it may improve our health or possibly reduce the healing process based on what has worked for other people.

I must stress how difficult it must be for someone to hear “Well that worked for this person, so it should also work for you”. For example, in relation to exercise, running may improve one person’s mental health while it may lead to the deterioration of another’s. Again, how one person may view exercise may be with ease, however how another

individual views exercise may lead to an increase in feelings of stress, guilt and anxiety.

There are two factors we need to be careful with here.

First, individually, we need to work out what works best for ourselves and secondly, we must not impose advice on another person and tell them “That is good for your mental health” as it may not be the case and may even be counter-productive.

Mental health is much more complex than physical health in that regard.

While we know a high sugar diet can lead to obesity, I don’t believe we can say, regardless of science, that exercise in totality, is good for our mental health. Yes, while on the whole, it may lead to a decrease in stress and anxiety and while the release of endorphins may alleviate depression, I still believe mental health is too complex to compartmentalise as each individual case is different.

This brings me to the diagnosis and medicating of people suffering mental health issues.

Let’s take depression as an example. This is where we need to be careful with science and giving

advice. An individual presents to their doctor with low mood. “I am feeling low, I’m down, I think I’m depressed”. The doctor asks, because of scientific evidence, “Are you getting any exercise” The patient, with guilt, answers “No”.

The doctor prescribes, in this example, more sleep and exercise to see if it works for the individual at hand.

Meanwhile, the patient does not have the energy, because of low mood (fatigue is a symptom of depression) to exercise and may experience increased feelings of guilt due to an inability to do so.

As a result, the depression increases. In this case, the patient is then prescribed an anti-depressant medication to combat the low mood element.

However, this patient is reluctant to take medication due to the stigma around taking an antidepressant.

The story goes on. My point is, what may work for one person, as much as proven cases are welcome, may not for another.

Therefore, we need to be careful using Dr Google for advice, careful with who we take advice from and be mindful of what

‘advice’ we give out.

Therefore, I would, if I could ‘advise’ — find out what works for you. For some, it is sitting in quietness with no noise, which isn’t always easy when you have children, however you need to make that time for yourself too.

For others, it may be listening to music and taking it out on the boxing bag in the garage. Again, it is what works for you, nobody is to say otherwise, all that matters is that it works for you.

With regards mental health diagnosis, some people are against psychiatric diagnosis and believe it is only a label, whilst others actively seek a diagnosis and will learn every minute detail about it. It is not for anyone to say which course of action is better. Some are against medications, others take their medication religiously. It is down to each individual to decide and we should not impose judgement.

If I could give my two cents on the topic of mental health diagnosis. I believe that, similar to my above points regarding exercise to combat depression, it has its place.

Mental health disorders may be genetic or develop as a response to, for example, trauma such as bullying or work-related stress.

Diagnosis, I believe, exists as a means of identifying present and future issues that may exist with the patient. I would be of the belief that, most of the time, a diagnosis can help the person gain an element of control of their condition. Why? Because certain behaviours and patterns have been observed by clinicians over the years.

A diagnosis is to help both the professional and patient. It helps the professional because, without boxing you in or labelling you, they can identify certain patterns where humans respond to stress, anxiety, trauma or depression in similar ways.

It helps the patient as it allows the person to gain ownership of their condition. Whilst no two people are the same, patterns can be identified that may reduce the healing or recovery time because of what has worked with other people in the past.

This is different to the point I made earlier about mental health advice. I am referring

to psychiatry and the medical model diagnosis here, whilst earlier I was referring to mental health advice that we see every day.

However, I do believe, like advice, diagnosis is not the same for one person as for another, even though two cases may display similarities. It would be unfair to say one case is the same as another, no matter how similar they are.

In conclusion, the nature of mental health is extremely complex. No one case is the same and should be treated accordingly by both individuals and clinicians. Advice, even though it may be scientifically proven in a large sample experiment, may not necessarily work for the individual and may be counter-productive, even detrimental to a person’s mental health.

While recovery time can be reduced by using the medical model of diagnosis to identify and implement an adequate recovery plan, medications remain a trial and error process which is a testament to how complex each case is.

Cashel continue winning streak TSDL Youth League Div 1 Clonmel Town Cashel Town

Cashel Town kept up their recent excellent run of form by taking another three points on the road against Clonmel Town, to keep them right in the hunt for the title in the top division of Youths football in Tipperary this season.

It was a closely fought affair, with the away side dominating for most of the game, but finding it hard to break down a very stubborn Town side. In the end it looked like the game would finish in a draw, until the visitors were awarded a penalty kick with four minutes

left to play, and up stepped Blake Doyle Carroll to smash the ball to the net to the delight of the travelling supporters. After that it

was simplt a case of keep ball for the away side and they were happy to go home with three extra points in their pockets. .

Borris travelled to Clare on Saturday to take on a strong Bridge United side in the fifth round of this year’s FAI Youths Cup, hoping to join fellow TSDL side Cashel Town in the last eight. Alas they faltered in the end, but gave a great account of themselves a long way from home. The home side had the better of the opening twenty minutes but the Borris defence

was resolute and their keeper was in fine form. Eventually the Tipperary side started to get into the game, but just as they seemed to be getting to grips, Bridge made the breakthrough with a lovely through ball ten minutes from the half time break, that was clinically finished to the net. The TSDL side regrouped at half time and played some nice football but frustratingly could not find the net. For the last twenty minutes both teams had chances to score and the

game was still on a knife edge, when the Clare side delivered the sucker punch when adding a second goal in the final twelve minutes from time to go two up.

Borris threw everything they had at the hosts for the remainder of the game and thought Louis Coughlan had scored to pull a goal back, but the score was somehow disallowed. Darragh O Dwyer and John Lacy also came close but it wasn’t to be, and the visitors dropped out of the competition.

Borris’ seconds entertained Clonmel Town’s second side on Saturday in Newhill to fight for a place in the Division Two Cup final, and both teams played out a very enjoyable tie in front of their respective supporters.

The two teams started well with a few chances each, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock after great work from Aaron and Lorcan in midfield

Cian was slipped through and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the far corner to put Borris in front. It was nip and tuck up to halftime with Clonmel applying strong pressure and playing some good football but Borris remained strong and went in ahead at the break.

Borris started the 2nd half at a blistering pace and doubled their lead inside 5 minutes when Conor Ryan cut inside and buried past the Clonmel keeper giving him no chance.

These two teams have met numerous times in different competitions in the last few years and some of these games have been titanic battles, but Suirside got a well deserved win here on Sunday on a relatively comfortable scoreline. The home side started the brighter and had an early opportunity to open the scoring in the fourth minute, but John O Darmody’s effort went narrowly wide. Gavin Sheehan had another good chance in the ninth minute,

but again his volley went he wrong side of the post. It seemed inevitable that they would score however, and six minutes before the break they got the opening goal when Jason Coffey found an onrushing Gavin Sheehan, whose strike was parried by the Dualla keeper into the path of veteran striker Paul Kennedy and he made no mistake from just yards out. This was enough to give Suirside a half time lead, and they doubled their lead in the second minute of the second period when a Jason Coffey corner was met by the head of Kennedy to give him and his side a comfortable cushion. The Kilsheelan Youths produced a heroic performance here to come from behind, and with a man down to snatch a win late in extra-time and secure their place in this year’s Division Two Youths Cup final. The opening of half of this game was a tight and cagey affair, with very little separating the sides. Although both had half chances neither were able to

apply that killer touch and they went into the break scoreless.

The game continued in the same vein in the second period, until it looked like it had reached a turning point when the home side had a player dismissed just after the hour mark. Minutes later Cullen fired to the net and things looked ominous for the hosts.

But they dug deep, and with ten minutes remaining Gus Nolan’s in-swinging corner kick found its way directly into the back of the net to give us the equaliser

and send the game to extra-time.

It continued tight throughout this period and looked destined for penalty kicks. But with just four minutes remaining Preston Vickers popped up with a stunning first-time effort, off his weaker foot, from the edge of the penalty area that found the bottom left-corner of the Cullen net, much to the delight of the home fans. This was enough to settle the game and the home side will be looking forward to a final in the weeks ahead.

TSDL Division 2 Youths League It was a nervy last 30 minutes with Clonmel looking for a lifeline back into the game and only for some great defending would have pulled one back.

Borris held out well for the remainder of the game to take the tie. We now look forward to a Cup Final in a couple of weeks time which is sure to be an entertaining affair. A great achievement for this very young Borris side. Well done to players and management and best of luck in the final.

The away side were always on top here against a depleted Galbally side, and once they opened the scoring ten minutes before the break through a Dylan Meagher strike, it looked like there was

hosts in control, but eighteen minutes from time Dualla almost pulled a goal back when a brilliant through ball put a visiting striker one on one with the home keeper, but Mark Kelly in the goal got down to make a very brave save. This shook the Ardfinnan side back into action, and they added a third goal to make sure there would be no comeback ten minutes from time, courtesy of a mistake in the visiting defence. A looping back pass was spilled by the Dualla keeper and Oisin Ryan was in hand to get the third to put his side in the hat for the next round.

Peake Villa travelled to Dublin on Saturday to play out a rematch of a game that had to be called off due to bad weather in Thurles a fortnight ago, and they came away with a good win against a very strong Crumlin United side. The game was played on un unfamiliar astro turf surface and the Dublin side started better, but it didn’t take for Villa to settle into the game and their first real chance led to the opening goal. Good play by Keith Cahill down the left saw him put in a great cross that fell to Liam McCormack at the back post, and

The hosts were stunned but they weren’t going to go quietly, and created a few half chances during the half, but they found Shane McGuire in the Villa goal having an inspired performance. In the end the Tipperary side saw out the half and went in at the half-time break a goal ahead. The start to the second half was hectic, and just two minutes in, Crumlin were awarded a penalty for a foul in the box. Alan McGreal stepped up to take it, but it was excellently saved by Mc Guire who dived full length to his right to keep the ball out. The Dublin side were rocked by this and Villa went on the attack and doubled

their lead a minute later when a shot from Dale Loughnane was parried by the keeper and Ronan Maguire was on hand to tap in.

Two nil up now, the visiting side were happy to cede possession of the ball to the hosts while looking for chances to add to their tally on the break. But Crumlin finally got a breakthrough ten minutes from the end when Dean Sutcliffe made it two goals to one. The closing minutes of the game were tense, with the hosts pushing to get an equaliser, but they found veterans Alan Leahy and Evan McCormack in fine form at the back for Villa, marshalling their defence, and they saw it out to join St Michael’s and Clonmel Celtic in the final 16 of the competition.

ride of place this week has to go to the Nenagh CBS Dr Harty Cup winners history makers and men who will go down in legend, not just for the achievement, but for the manner of it too.

A pulsating contest which had a grandstand finish, Nenagh CBS succeeded in putting back-toback Tipperary winners of the Dr Harty Cup for the first time since 1950 and 1951 when Thurles CBS achieved the feat. It had been done only on two other occasions - 1938 and 1939 - again Thurles CBS; and in 1930 and 1931 with Rockwell College.

But, the Nenagh victory represents the first time that Tipperary schools have achieved back-to-back titles with two

different schools involved. And, the fact that Cashel Community School and Nenagh CBS were both winning for the first time only adds to the sense of excitement and the enormity of their achievements.

Underage hurling is well and truly alive and well in Tipperary and considering the number of players showcased in the Dr Harty Cup between all of the Premier County schools, one would have to expect that the minor and u20 teams ought to be well up there when it comes to being competitive in the coming season. The raw material would most certainly appear to be there - now the trick is to harness it.

Nenagh CBS, like their Cashel counterparts last year, deserve

enormous credit for the sterling work undertaken year after year - the same effort goes into a side which doesn’t achieve as goes into a winning side. In fact, that credit has to go across all the second level schools of the county and across all the grades. Remember, teachers give of their time and their expertise free of charge - it all happens outside of classroom hours and happens without any financial reward. But, it is only when success accrues that the real rewards are reaped.

So, all those teachers ploughing the furrow in second level hurling, football, camogie and ladies football deserve to take a well deserved bow and should be recognised for their dedication to the cause.

The same can be said of primary school teachers. At the formative end of the scale, they play an equally important role in the development of young players and do so willingly and generously.

To the Leagues Liam Cahill’s men made light of the trip to Parness Park for the opening round of the Allianz National Hurling League on Saturday last, but will have a sterner test of their credentials next weekend in FBD Semple Stadium when Galway come to town.

The Tipp boys showed some great touches en-route to a comfortable enough win - granted Dublin had the lead cut to four points at

MOYNE ATHLETIC CLUB NIA Live Juv. Nenagh This weekend saw a great group of Juvenile athletes back in action, many getting their indoor season underway. The Track and Field Live event in Nenagh was hugely popular with athletes travelling from all over the country. As part of this brilliant event, Aoibheann Doyle started the day off with a speedy 10.27s PB in the 60m.

She was quickly followed in the u12 event by Meadhbh Hall (9.93s), Annie Ely (10.22s PB) and Darragh Joyce (9.90s PB).

Last on the track for the sprint races was Saoirse Joyce in the u14 category with a great time of 9.73s.

The athletes then took on a middle distance event, where

many more PBs were earned.

Aoibheann was again first to line out and ran an impressive 1.25.72 PB over 400m. The u12 event was ran over 600m, with Darragh (1.55.21) and Annie (2.07.24) both running impressive personal bests to finish third in their heats.

Meadhbh continued her good form with a time of 2.15.44 in her heat. In the girls u14 800m, Saoirse Joyce and Caoimhe Slevin competed in the first heat with excellent times of 2.57.89 and 2.55.76 respectively.

This was a great opportunity for these athletes to compete at such a high level and we are proud of all of them for their performances this weekend.

one stage in the second half, but Tipperary never really looked in any great danger of losing the initiative. They were just slicker and more potent with the scores coming at the right time and from a selection of players. Jake Morris picked up the Man of the Match Award but he could have company for that honour on a day which will have pleased the Tipperary management. It was the ideal outcome really - a good win with plenty of room for improvement.

We’ll need to see more of that improvement next Sunday if the points are to be secured in the Galway clash.

Footballers secure a fine win On their travels this week to Longford, Tipperary’s footballers

secured a fine two point victory to keep themselves very much in the hunt for promotion from division 4 of the league. Another reverse in this game having lost to Carlow in the first round, would have spelled disaster, but the Tipp lads pulled off the victory and set themselves up nicely now for a trip to London. There won’t be much time for sight seeing though and Paul Kelly’s men must come away with the points from this tie as well. London might be a long way from Tipperary, but lose and the journey will be considerably longer on the way home. The team is coming together nicely and the new players are beginning to find their feet. Let’s keep it going now.

DUNDRUM ATHLETIC CLUB John Treacy Dungarvan 10 Mile.

Sharon Cantwell and Patrick Bowe made their way to Dungarvan on Sunday morning to take part in the John Tracey Dungarvan 10 Mile road race.

Patrick finished in 305th position in a great time of 01:06:33 and Sharon finished in 381st position in another great time of 01:08:34. Two great races from Sharon and Patrick as over 2800 athletes completed the 10-mile circuit.

JOHN TREADY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE The very popular 32nd Annual JOHN TREACY DUNGARVAN 10 MILE was held on Sunday 4th February in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

This race sells out very fast with runners coming from all over Ireland and there was a huge total of 2739 take to the line.

It was a nice dry breezy morning in Dungarvan, the wind was welcome, keeping Athletes cool while they made their way around the 10 Mile route.

We had 11 from the club travel to Dungarvan to take on the 10 Mile distance.

First home for the club was Tom O Connell, 59.26, followed

IMRA MUNSTER BANSHA WOODS TRAIL RACE The IMRA MUNSTER BANSHA WOODS TRAIL RACE was held in Bansha Woods on Sunday 4th February. There was a long course of 8.5k and a 4k shorter course.

We had 4 Senior Athletes from the club run the long course and 7 Juveniles in the 4k short course.

First home for the club on the 8.5k trail race was Barry Hartnett in a time of 32.47, and was 2nd Male, followed on by Catherine Fogarty 40.12, and was 3rd Female, next was Ritchie Bresnan, 41.20 and Liam Butler 49.03.

Our Juveniles who ran the 4k course were Bella Curling, Isobel Hartnett, Grace Butler, Farren Ryan, Julie Morrissey, Claire Morrissey and Emma Morrissey.

By Big John Jefferson “Soapy” Smith was a con-man who operated in the Wild West in the late 1800’s.

He swindled innocents out of their hard earned cash by running three-card monte and crooked poker games. Among Smith’s accomplices were “Big Ed” Burns, a Chicago-based gangster who headed West to avoid answering for numerous crimes and Texas Jack Vermillion, whose odd combination of occupations included outlaw and Methodist preacher.

Smith earned the nickname “Soapy” from his most famous con. Himself and his accomplices would ride from frontier town to frontier town with a suitcase stuffed with bars of soap. The con began with Smith setting up a stand on a busy street corner.

In the suitcase would be piles of ordinary soap wrapped in plain paper. Smooth-talking Smith would gather a crowd to watch him re-wrap the bars of soap, inserting money, sometimes a dollar bill, sometimes a one hundred dollar note. He would

then make a big show of mixing the bars of soap containing cash with the rest in his suitcase.

“Who wants to take a chance on winning $100 for a one dollar bar of soap?” One the early sales would go to either Big Ed or Texas Jack and they would rip off the wrapping to reveal the money inside. Needless to say sales would be brisk after that.

As the contents of the suitcase grew low, Smith would announce that the bar of soap with the $100 inside, had still not been won and that he would now auction off the remaining bars. When the bar with the $100 inside came up for auction, Big Ed or Texas Jack would outbid everyone and win the big prize. With their money made, Soapy Smith and his buddies would catch the train to the next town to rope in a whole new bunch of suckers.

If Soapy Smith, Big Ed and Taxas Jack were around today, they would be on the GAA management circuit.

Regular readers of this column will know that I am very much

against the concept of paying outside managers/coaches. It is estimated that it costs around €4,000 to run an inter-county training session these days and quite often the only people at that training session who are not getting paid are the players. You don’t have to be Eddie Hobbs to know that unless someone shouts stop soon, the situation will become unsustainable.

In 2009, Páraic Duffy, the Director General of the GAA, published a paper on the issue of unregulated payments to management teams. By “unregulated” Duffy was referring to payments over and above vouched expenses genuinely incurred in the preparation of teams. Duffy’s report argued that the extent to “which the Association turns a blind eye was not acceptable” as it “undermined our volunteer spirit and tarnished the reputation of the Association.” The report concluded that “doing nothing about the issue did not constitute a viable policy; it simply avoided the issue.” And yet, nothing is

exactly what the GAA did.

In 2002, a committee under former president Peter Quinn’s chairmanship was established to try to uncover the reality around “under the table” payments to managers. At the end of the process Quinn said that his committee couldn’t even find the tables, never mind the payments that were allegedly being made under them!

For many years, Joe Brolly has campaigned for a rule that only a club man could manage his club and only a county man his county. It was a simple rule that meant eligibility for management was the same as for playing.

Needless to say his proposal was ignored which is a pity because it was a rule that would have protected the core amateur ideal of the GAA, the very ideal that has been the cornerstone of its success since Michael Cusack and friends first met in Lizzie Hayes’ Hotel in Thurles in 1884.

The “outside” manager phenomenon has now hit the club scene. Outside coaches

are demanding up to €150 a training session. As one such manager recently said to me, “if I looked for anything less they’d think I was unless”. The recent JP McManus donation won’t have helped matters. These coaches will know the clubs have an extra few thousand in the kitty and many will want a slice of it.

Of course when it comes to the AGM at the end of the year, many of the payments to managers will remain untraceable. Annual accounts may contain a line called “team preparation expenses” but few if any will break down what costs are included in that category.

Indeed, it’s likely that many of these payments are completely “off balance sheet”.

When David Power stepped down as manager of the Tipperary Senior Football team, I suggested in this column that the job should be offered to a Tipperary man. Many, and if I’m honest, probably most football people in the county disagreed with me. It’s shows how much

the culture of “the outside man” has taken root so many people felt only an “outsider” could do the job.

When you appoint outside managers you are looking for short term gain. The long term development of the players is not considered. The outsider will say all the right things while they are in situ before they move onto the next club or county and say all the right things there as well. Just look at Mickey Harte’s move from Louth to Derry. Mickey didn’t go to Louth in the first place because he loved the county. He went because he was offered a good package but as soon as a better package came along he dropped the wee county like a hot snot.

I have no doubt that many outside managers are capable people. But I also have no doubt that a local man (club or county) could do the same job at a fraction of the cost. Hopefully common sense will eventually prevail and clubs and counties will realise that it is the players that make a coach and not the other way around.

Meagher and Quinlisk to the fore in Tipp victory Clare 0-12 Tipperary 2-07 Referee: Karol Collins Player of the match: Lorna Ryan Tipperary travelled to Meelick GAA in Clare on Saturday for round 2 of the VERY Division 2b league. In a repeat of last year’s Junior All-Ireland final Tipperary were out for revenge and two second half goals from Sinead Meagher and Amy Quinlisk proved crucial as the visitors clinched a 1 point victory.

Both sides traded early points to leave the score 4 points to 3 to the homeside after 10 minutes.

Tipperary had to line out without centre back Gemma Fox who was sick so Orla O’Brien started in

midfield and Lily Fahie started at number 6. With Jennifer Daly in fine form, Clare finished the half strong to take a 3 point lead at the break 8 points to 5.

Sinead Meagher was excellent for Bill Mullaney’s side winning lots of possession and giving a masterclass in high catching.

Clare were struggling to mark her and on the 42nd minute she struck a wonder goal to give Tipperary the lead 1-06 to 8 points. Aoife O’Brien was her usual reliable self in the Tipperary goals and impressed keeping a clean sheet. She was ably assisted

by Maria Connolly at full back while Clonoulty Rossmore’s Lorna Ryan was excellent at wing back. Ciara Brennan was switched to midfield during

the game and this also worked well as she broke up the Clare dominance and fed plenty of ball into her forwards where Amy Quinlisk, Jill-Anne Quirke and substitute Jenny Grace all got on the scoreboard. Tipp held Clare to just 4 second half points, 3 Caoimhe Cahill frees and a point from play from Jennifer Daly. A second Tipp goal this time from Kilruane MacDonagh’s Amy Quinlisk ensured a one point win for Tipperary and their first points in the league after their defeat in round 1 to Cork. Next up is an away trip to Wexford on the 17th February.
