Mayoral Reception recognises outstanding contributions and achievements of David Anchell

On Tuesday evening, Mayor Cllr Richie Molloy extended a warm welcome to David Anchell of Camida at the Town Hall, honouring him and his team for their remarkable recognition and contribution to the local community. The Mayor, in his opening remarks, greeted everyone and offered a special welcome to David Anchell and his business partner Maurice Healey. He emphasised that this reception represents the highest honour bestowed by the Mayor to individuals who significantly contribute to the community.

Mayor Molloy explained that numerous people had recommended David for this prestigious recognition due to his outstanding contributions.

He highlighted how David and the Camida team have supported a multitude of community groups in the town, showcasing an extensive and commendable list of contributions. The Mayor expressed his belief that David truly deserves this honour, acknowledging the extraordinary lengths to which he and his team have gone to support local community groups.

Former Mayors Patricia

O’Sullivan and Hubert Burke, as well as High Court Judge Mr Donald Binchey, were present at the event, along with members of the business community and public representatives. They collectively expressed gratitude to David for his impactful contributions to the town of Clonmel. Apologies were received from those who couldn’t attend the event.

Cllr John Fitzgerald, a long time acquaintance of David, praised him as friendly, supportive, non judgmental, and always willing to lend a helping hand in business.

Cllr Fitzgerald commended David’s willingness to support those new to business by providing advice and opportunities.

Cllr Fitzgerald also emphasised the pivotal role of risk taking entrepreneurs in generating tax revenue by creating jobs. “Your track record speaks to this, as you’ve not only taken bold risks but also contributed to improving lives through your ventures.

Tonight, I extend my sincere salute for your distinct approach, diverging from the status quo and making a positive impact.” He wished David the very best in all his future endeavors in the town.

Cllr Pat English said on behalf of the Clonmel community, we express our heartfelt gratitude for the transformative impact you’ve had on our town over the past number of decades. “Since your humble beginnings some years ago, Clonmel has thrived under your dedicated efforts, resulting in nearly flawless conditions.

Your presence in Clonmel is a significant asset, providing invaluable support to our residents on a daily basis. Much of your commendable work often goes unseen, yet its positive effects are deeply felt. We extend our thanks not only for your community support but also for the substantial employment opportunities you’ve created over the years.

“Your commitment to business excellence is evident in the continuous growth and success of your endeavors. We appreciate the tireless effort you’ve invested in enhancing the beauty of the business establishments, notably on the Quays and the ongoing project on Anglesea Street. These developments are undeniably significant additions to our town’s landscape and will undoubtedly be celebrated for years to come.

“Your restoration of three buildings, breathing new life into them, deserves special acknowledgment.

This feat contributes significantly to the preservation of our town’s history and charm. We are grateful for your dedication and vision.

Without their support, aiding 147 struggling families during Christmas, dealing with issues like unemployment, sudden bereavement, terminal illness, or domestic violence, wouldn’t be possible. The impact Camida has made is immeasurable, and I’m forever grateful. I wish continuous success to David and appreciate the positive growth of the company. It’s heartening to witness success shared with the

High Court Judge, Donald Binchy, expressed his delight at being asked to speak and congratulated the organisers for hosting a reception in honour of David. He endorsed the sentiments shared by councillors, acknowledging their accurate portrayal of David’s essence. Mr Binchy recalled his early days as a solicitor when David, along with Orla and another colleague, worked in the loft above The Buttermarket.

He praised David’s journey from the Quay to Tanner House and eventually to their current premises, noting how it epitomizes David Anchell’s broad mindedness, generosity, style, and courage in undertaking unconventional projects. Mr Binchy highlighted the collaboration between David and fellow shareholder Maurice Healey, emphasising their shared vision. He commended David’s impact on Tipperary since the 1980s, mentioning his Irish citizenship application and the genuine sense of being a Tipperary person. He also acknowledged David’s contributions to employment and community development, echoing the positive sentiments of other councillors.

Maurice Healey, David’s esteemed business partner, shared heartfelt reflections on the occasion of David’s upcoming 70th birthday on May 31st. Amidst the anticipation of friends joining to celebrate this significant milestone, Maurice delved into the intriguing realm of astrology,

highlighting David’s Gemini personality a blend of playfulness, intellectual curiosity, and a penchant for juggling various missions, passions, hobbies, careers, and friendships.

The narrative then shifted to the origins of Maurice and David’s enduring friendship, spanning over 40 years. A pivotal moment in 1997 was vividly recalled when, amidst the revelry of a rugby match in Maurice’s Dublin home, David, pint in hand, extended a transformative proposition, an invitation to become a shareholder in his company. This marked the inception of a journey that has seamlessly traversed 27 years, weaving the two men together in a business partnership that has stood the test of time.

During this journey, Maurice found himself not only entwined with Camida but also becoming a part of Tipperary, embracing its charm as a Corkman. He emphasised the significant role David played in shaping his professional and personal life, becoming an integral part of the community fabric.

Acknowledging the presence of Orla, another shareholder, and the incredible Camida team, Maurice extolled David’s exceptional understanding of people. He underscored David’s distinctive leadership style, characterised by a remarkable willingness to share the fruits of success with the team first. This, in turn, has fostered a workplace culture that stands out, with minimal attrition and a strong sense of camaraderie.

He acknowledged longstanding relationships with business associates, the importance of loyalty and mutual benefit. He dispelled the notion of sacrifice, asserting that his giving was not selfless but rather a reciprocal arrangement that benefited both parties.

As he shared anecdotes about moving to Clonmel with his wife in 1977, Anchell marveled at the interconnectedness of life. He recounted a recent charitable donation to C-saw Joe Leahy, only to discover that the funds would be used to purchase a property at 24 William Street, the very house he and his wife had moved into years ago.

Closing his speech with optimism for Clonmel’s potential, Anchell expressed his belief that the town could regain its former glory.

He extended an invitation to all present to join him for a drink at Moran’s pub, a gesture reflecting his commitment to community and celebration.

In conclusion, David Anchell’s speech encapsulated a life philosophy centered around joy, shared success, and a deep connection to the community, painting a portrait of a businessman who not only values personal achievement but also the positive impact his actions can have on those around him.

The Mayor extended heartfelt appreciation to David Anchell, lauding him as an extraordinary

Reflecting on a common practice in Ireland to reserve praise until after someone has passed, the Mayor shared a poignant insight when a priest once conveyed the sentiment that flowers on a grave hold little value compared to expressing gratitude and admiration while an individual is still alive and active.

In a departure from the conventional posthumous tributes, the Mayor emphasised the importance of seizing the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate achievements in the present moment. This philosophy resonated with the gathering, underscoring the significance of recognising contributions and expressing gratitude in real time.

Gardening for Wildlife Encouraging Bats - By Albert Nolan I have been fascinated by bats for years and their nocturnal habits and have been very privileged to lead many bat walks, carry out bat surveys and do workshops in schools as part of the Heritage in Schools Scheme.

We have done these talks all over Munster and explored buildings that the owner’s thought were empty but had hidden guests in the shape of bats. A lot of people are terrified of bats, and this is based on long held superstitions and beliefs.

Bats are not flying rats but are mammals like us and give birth to live young and the mother suckles her pup on milk. They have a low rate of reproduction with females not reaching breeding age till at least two years and they usually only give birth every second year.

We have nine species of bat in Ireland with another two recorded as one of vagrants. Bats will hibernate in cool damp places like caves, old buildings and walls during the winter but if the weather is mild enough, they will wake up to feed and go to the bathroom.

Females need a warm dry space for their maternity roosts and our modern insulated attics make the

ideal environment to raise their pups. Bats are tiny creatures and can squeeze in through any “expansion gap” left by the builders.

With spring just around the corner bats will be slowly starting to wake up and will be very hungry after their long sleep.

There are lots of plants you can grow that will encourage bats. Bats eat up to 3500 insects each night. The smaller pipistrelle bats feed on tiny flies like mosquitoes while the bigger leisers on beetles and moths.

If you have any type of hedge this can be improved for bats by training climbers like jasmine, honeysuckle, clematis, ivy and bramble up through the hedge and allowing them to scramble through the hedge. These will provide lots of pollen and nectar and evening scent that will entice in moths and other flying insects.

Leaving a wildflower edge at the base of your hedge or in a sunny location in your community or school will also provide lots of insects for bats to feed on.

Also planting small native trees and shrubs like blackthorn, hawthorn and elderberry and leaving ivy on trees as bats often roost in this native climber.

Strong lights are one of the big deterrents for bats and lights could be set via a timer to switch of at night and this would also save electricity and money.

Bats will also use bat boxes, and these are very easy to make or would be an ideal project for a men’s shed or transition year group. Bat boxes need to be placed around three/four meters of the ground with no branches blocking the flight path into the box.

Check your location at night before you put up the box to ensure there are no strong lights shining your box. The inside of the box should not be treated as bats are very sensitive to pollution.

“Woodcock” Countryside and wildlife matters with Rupert Butler For those of you who are not familiar Woodcock are not unlike a large Snipe with a slightly bigger beak, one which is used to probe for earthworms and other invertebrates. Although they are present throughout the year Woodcock are far more abundant during the winter months, their numbers swelled by large influxes of migratory birds from northern climes. Many of these birds travel under the November moon, their passage reliant to a large extent on the prevailing winds. If conditions are not favourable Woodcock end up perishing in the North Sea, exhausted and not able to complete their epic journey.

Those that do survive can

be found concentrated in woodland settings or marginal areas closeby.

During spring and early summer our resident birds perform a breeding ritual known as roding. This is where the male birds fly in a circular fashion high above the surrounding woodland in a bid to attract the attention of the females within. Whilst doing so they make a funny croaking noise, another ploy to endear themselves to the female population.

In folklore a Woodcocks bill was thought to be a large stick which was supposedly used by the bird in question to save itself from drowning during migratory flights. It was said to rest on this stick as it floated

before resuming its journey once again.

If you are out and about just as darkness begins to shroud the surrounds you may spy some of these birds as they fly from their daytime logings to favourite pastures.

Here they will feed under the cover of darkness before returning once again as dawn approaches. Ofen they may be found on the fringes of floodwater where the soft ground is much to their liking. They are by and large a secretive little bird, sometimes referred to as the ‘ghosts of the forest’.

So if your out at this time of the day keep you eyes peeled for these little delights as they whisper past.

CAHIR GAA NOTES DRAW THE JOKER - the Joker Draw Jackpot of €5,400 had a winner and was won last Sunday night by Sinead Cusack. SYMPATHY- the Club wish to express sincere sympathies to the family of John C O’Meara.

John had a significant role in the history of the club during the 1950’s. He was a member of the u15 football and hurling teams that won South Championship in 1950. He captained the first Cahir minor football to win a County Championship. That campaign was famous for the fact that it took four games to decide the South final against Commercials.

He captained the Tipp minor footballers in 1954. John was also Treasurer of the club at the age of 17. He also won a County Junior title with Cahir in 1955.

John also had a distinguished career as an inter-county player

with Tipperary footballers. He was also an accomplished hurler with the Wild Rovers. John submitted a lovely article to our Club history book (which won the McNamee Award for the best history in 2009). May he rest in peace.

William Rochfort Lecture Cahir Social and Historical Society will hold its second lecture of 2024 in Cahir House Hotel on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The lecture will be given by Margaret O’Sullivan who will talk on ‘William Rochfort: Cahir’s Last Land Agent’.

Rochfort’s life story is well worth telling. He lived in Cahir Abbey House for many years and ran

the Shanbally Estate for the O’Callaghan family. Our guest lecturer, Margaret, has done Trojan research on this subject.

She also has strong personal connections to Cahir through her grand-father, the late Timmy Looney, a well-known local historian.

The Lecture will start at 8pm and admission is €3 for Members, €5 for Guests and Students are free.

This week sees the start of the long awaited RRDF works for Cahir Town. Works on the ground are due to commence on tomorrow, Thursday February 1 and these works should have no impact on traffic in the town. This phase will enable council to go to tender for surfacing and this is as a result of being able to use the matched funding by Tipperary County Council.

The contracts for the new car park demolition and enabling works were signed last Thursday February 25 with civil engineering contractors Tony Kirwan, Kilmacthomas, and Representatives of Tipperary County Council after the recent tendering process.

The new car park will accommodate over 80 cars, 5 bus

bays as well as disability and EV charging facilities. This will be a huge benefit to not only the post office but the town square too, as it will increase footfall and make the town more accessible.

Retailers should benefit from it also as within less than a minute of parking your car you will be able to walk to the town centre.

Cllr Andy Moloney has welcomed the car park commencement as a vital piece of infrastructure in the plan to improve Cahir as a district town and the circulation of visitors to the area. Moloney said “we need to continuously improve our facilities and with these works and the state of the art library due, we are making steady progress”.

It is hoped that the car park can be ready for the summer trade.

The Club wish to announce that we are retiring after 45 years and we wish to thank all those who have helped us during that time. Our thanks are extended to past committees who did such a good job of keeping the Club activities going and of course the Management & Staff of Cahir House Hotel for their assistance with meetings, demonstrations and Gala Nights. We also want to thank Dolans Supervalu and Dairygold Co Op who facilitated us for our Daffodil Day collections. Bunscoil Na Cathrach Rang VA win Horticulture Competition Last September, Rang VA took part in a horticulture competition with SETU (South East Technological University, previously WIT). The theme was ‘A Growing Journey’ and with a submission date of September 17, the class and their teacher, Fidelma Nugent hit the soil running to get the project completed in time.

The project brief was to create a 3-minute video that showcased the children’s personal experience of horticulture. Children were to explain their passion for horticulture and their excitement for their chosen area.

They submitted a number of group videos, e.g. ‘Different Growing

Environments’, ‘The Rocket Race’, ‘Bougie Bouquet’, ‘How to Sow Seeds (with a little twist)’, ‘Inspiring Facts about Roses’, ‘Compelling Carota Sativa’. Some of these videos were taken over the course of two weeks where children observed daily progress on their seeds in different growing environments.

The whole learning process was really enjoyable and each group was a winner in the long term in their commitment to research, observation and newly-developed attitudes to growing.

Recently teacher Fidelma Nugent and Rang VA discovered that three of the groups were successful in the competition, a phenomenal number

from one class! The following are the prizes and winners.

First Prize in the Primary Team category for the video titled “Different Growing Environments”

by Lucy and Amy who won a €300 voucher from Connecting to Nature.

Fourth Prize in the Primary Team category for the video titled “How to Sow Seeds (with a little twist)”

The language that is used when we speak about mental health is something that is often left forgotten. This is due to a misunderstanding and lack of knowledge and awareness around what language it is that we do actually use when broaching such a complex issue.

In a perfect world, we would have the words to use to communicate how we feel or how we speak to another about what someone else might be feeling. However, given the intricate nature of mental health, our words can often lead to confusion, misunderstanding and even sometimes a premature catastrophizing of an individuals experience.

So, how do we use the right language when speaking about mental health? It is is a huge question that has been heavily researched and debated across academia within the profession of psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy. It would depend on the context of language to start with.

For example when someone says they have depression. In order to evaluate if it is indeed depression, the sufferer must be experiencing a range of eight or so symptoms

for at least two weeks before there is an intervention such as medication as prescribed by a doctor.

There lies the issue of the belief that someone is having a bad week or is actually suffering from a mental health illness.

We can be quick to jump to conclusions around something like depression and it can be of benefit to distinguish between a mental health issue or a mental health illness.

A mental health issue may be experiencing symptoms of depression such as low motivation or lack of interest. An illness on the other hand is a more serious and possibly a longer term experience of such symptoms. It is important that we distinguish between the two. In situations where this is not determined may lead to an individual believing that they do indeed have depression which could lead to prescribing medication where it is not needed. If a professional does not determine whether it is depression, for example, it can obviously lead to terrible consequences for a person.

However we must place trust in our medical professionals.

An individual must be experiencing anxiety on the other hand for at least six months before there is a diagnosis of anxiety. This used to be six weeks but it has had a dramatic change in criteria. So medical language is important and vital that we don’t self-diagnose through our own lens by searching through Google, something that has been a challenge for everyone as it can lead to worry and often times, misinformation.

But what about the language we use with each other every day which is just as if not more important. It is something I would like to approach delicately. If someone is not feeling themselves, so to speak, I think any attempt at communicating this should be welcomed with compassion.

What makes it complex is that it may not be articulated in a ‘direct’ way leading to the grey area of how it is received by another.

An sense of empathetic curiosity for the people we encounter on a daily basis would be a great starting point. Often, people are not looking for advice but want and need someone to listen attentively.

However, as a family member or

friend we often feel the need to fix a situation leading what is not in the best interest of the person.

Wording is also important. A simple word not meant to insult and hurt can often lead to a person feeling triggered making a situation worse, even though we have our best intentions at heart.

This is why mental health conversations are so complex and often misunderstood. Keeping an open mind is an important aspect of mental health language.

It is important to remember that indeed we have come a long long way with speaking about mental health which was the elephant in the room for so long.

However, we still have a long way to go in continuing to try our best in understanding language and what it really means from a personal and medical point of view. Any conversation around mental health is to be treated with sensitivity and warranted caution but it is something we can’t be afraid to talk about either.

There is no definition or guidebook on mental health language or conversation in general however leading with empathy, curiosity and compassion is a great starting point.

Mind Matters A Blueprint for Practical Wellbeing

Emotional Intelligence – Your Key to a Better Home and Work Life “I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.”

--Oscar Wilde In the animated film “Inside Out” young Riley, having moved to San Francisco leaving her old life behind, is lost and overwhelmed. Her Emotions are actual characters in the film.

Unsurprisingly, they’re called Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness and they’re conflicted and disagree about how best to navigate a new school in a new city. In one scene, Riley’s dad loses his temper with her over dinner. He gives in to the impulse to lash out when Riley starts to misbehave, in a way that is totally out of character for her. He allows his anger in the moment to control his decisions.

The emotionally intelligent thing for him to do would have been to find out why she was acting out of charcter. The film is clever, aimed at both adults and children, and showcases the importance of managing emotions, shaking off bad moods and controlling impulses which, in short, is Emotional Intelligence (EI).

Why Is EI Important?

If you think back to the last time you were stressed, was it easy to think rationally or make good decisions? Probably not.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to understand and manage your emotions effectively while also being attuned to the emotions of others. In order for you to engage your EI, you have to be able to use and control your emotions in such a way that you act thoughtfully and appropriately.

Crucially, emotional intelligence can be learned.

How Emotionally Intelligent Are You?

Some key signs of EI include the following: • You regulate your own emotions and don’t dump bad moods/worry on others around you • You can say no without compromising your relationships • You can bounce back from mistakes and not lose motivation or energy from one miscalculated judgement • You can manage your stress in difficult situations, you don’t explode at someone because you’ve had bad news or feel unhappy • You accept that change is inevitable and embrace it • You show empathy / concern for other people’s feelings • You take responsibility for your mistakes • You’re sensitive to others but don’t fear conflict • You’re immensely curious about people and what makes them tick EI – The Psychology of Managing Your Emotions The ability to manage core feelings like sadness, fear, anger, even happiness, can often be traced back to your early life experiences and how well your parents or guardians understood your emotions. Depending on early experiences we either distance ourselves from our emotions because we’re frightened of losing control or we give in to our emotions and rant or cry. If you can reconnect to your emotions, to physically feel where you’re experiencing the sensations - in your stomach? your throat? your chest? - this is a first step towards positive change.

In order to build EI we have to connect to our core emotions, accept them and become

comfortable with them through mindfulness and other exercises, listed below. If you’re very stressed, learn how to manage that first so you connect to and sit with strong or unpleasant emotions.

Observe the stress in your body.

Do you feel it as a tightness in your chest or discomfort in your tummy? Where is it? Sit with it.

Ask yourself: what am I feeling? Is it stress from anger or from fear or something else? Most importantly ask: why am I feeling it? If you start to recognise the pattern, and become less afraid of the feeling, you have an increased chance of changing how you respond to it in the moment.

Skills of Emotional Intelligence EI involves having self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills.

1.

Self-Awareness: Are you always aware of what you’re feeling and do you allow yourself to feel the emotion physically?

2.

Self-Regulation: Can you manage your emotions when under pressure? Can you control your impulses, shake off bad moods? Can you step back and think before you speak when you find yourself in really stressful situations?

3.

Empathy: Can you communicate sensitively with people across situations/cultures and recognise they’re suffering even if you don’t understand the emotion yourself?

4.

Motivation: Are you motivated towards positive outcomes? By your passion or by power? Do you seek new challenges?

5.

Social Skills: Can you build and maintain healthy relationships and argue your viewpoint without alienating anyone? Do you see conflict as

normal and healthy?

You’re unlikely to have uniformly high (or low) scores on all these skills. In the corporate world, I saw many instances of very brilliant people scoring highly on some skills (like self-awareness) with low scores on others (selfregulation, impulse management).

You might be aware that you get stressed but be unable to think clearly and assess your emotions when stress overwhelms you. So, in that moment, your decisions and actions are compromised even if you’re self-aware with good social skills and high motivation.

How Emotional Intelligence is Measured In the corporate world, verbal and non-verbal communication and conflict resolution are seen as core competencies for business success. These 3 competencies are necessary in order to work well with others and as they are rooted in self awareness and an ability to understand what others are experiencing, a lot of emphasis is placed on EI. In industry a number of different assessment tools are used to guage levels of emotional intelligence.

These tests, as in other types of psychometric tests, fall into one of two types: self-report and ability tests. Self-report tests are where you respond to statements or questions about yourself by rating your behaviour. Ability tests require people to demonstrate their abilities which are then rated by a third party. Two such tests that might be used are: The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso EI Test (MSCEIT), an ability-based test and The ESCI or Emotional and Social Competence Inventory which involves having people who know the individual offer ratings

of that person’s abilities in several different emotional competencies.

What you can do to strengthen your Emotional Intelligence 1.

Avoid Judgement: One of the pillars of EI is the capacity to withhold judgement and foster a more open-minded and inclusive approach to interpersonal relationships.

2.

Don’t view conflict (in a romantic, workplace or family setting) as necessarily negative.

Disagreements between people are inevitable. Resolving conflict in a manner that is healthy strengthens trust between people.

3.

Develop Resilience around Mistakes: Crucially, emotionally intelligent people are not ashamed of their mistakes but see them as opportunities for growth.

4.

Set boundaries: At home, at work. A crucial aspect of EI is the ability to define personal boundaries. Learn how to say no when necessary without compromising your relationships.

It’s equally important to master saying no to a child, a partner and a boss.

5.

Empathise: Observe your friends, family, colleagues.

Try to step in their shoes. This will foster a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and enhance your interpersonal connections.

6.

Be Mindful: Incorporating mindfulness techniques into your daily routines will enhance self-awareness and emotional regulation.

7.

Actively listen: Cultivating the skill of truly listening to others, demonstrating empathy and understanding, helps you step into others shoes and stay open.

8.

Be open to continuous learning: Actively seek knowledge

about emotions, communication, and human behavior to foster personal growth.

9.

Conflict Resolution Training: Change your lens; learn to see conflict as opportunity.

Disagreement between people is inevitable. If the behaviour used to resolve an issue is non threatening it can actually lead to a stronger connection between 2 people who now know that they can always resolve differences. How do you use nonverbal communication?

Think about the muscles around your eyes, nose, mouth, forehead.

What are they doing when you’re in conflict. Manage expressions.

Developing skills to navigate conflicts constructively, will turn challenges into opportunities for understanding and collaboration.

10.

Use exercise, humour, and play to relieve stress. Exercise reduces stress, sharpens the mind and puts things into perspective.

Laughter calms us down, and brings the nervous system into balance.

Summary EI is simply a series of skills and behaviours. Whilst some people will be naturally more emotionally intelligent than others, the skills can be learned and behaviours enhanced. If you’re new to the concept of EI; watch “Inside Out”. It demonstrates, better than any article, the world of beauty inside every human. It also provides a real opportunity to talk with children, your partner or team about the importance of emotions, and that we have a choice to manage them rather than repress them or act out on them. We can act on emotions or not; it’s a choice. Mastering that choice is the key to better relationships and improved mental wellbeing.

Junior Certificate Results 2023 Written By Manmeet Singh

On the 11th of September 2023, it was announced that on the 18th of October the previous Third Years would be receiving their Junior Certificate results. After an extremely busy and stressful summer we had mixed emotions.

Some of us felt relieved that the pressure would finally be lifted, others felt nervous that they wouldn’t get their desired results.

At 1:15pm on the day, we were all called up to the asembly area and sorted into lines based on our previous base class. After we were all lined up we moved into the PE hall and took our seats. Mr. Murray, Mr. Gallagher and our previous year head Mr. Galvin spoke to us congratulating us and stating that this year there were an exceptional amount of distinctions. This excited us even more than before! After this we were all called up individually and given our certificates in an envelope by various teachers that we had in the past

Work Experience

After we all received our envelopes we all opened and read our results together! A lot of people instantly began celebrating. We spent some time getting up and showing each other our results. Afterwards, we moved back to the assembly area. We showed our teachers our results and were given refreshments in the form of sausages, popcorn chicken and much more. The whole day was very exciting and a once in a lifetime experience! I would highly recommend current Third Year students to push themselves and try to do the best they can because it is worth it!

TY Work Experience

For my work experience I went to O’ Dwyers pharmacy in Tesco, Cashel. My hours were 10am to 3:30pm which was actually really good. I mainly just tagged and priced stock, stocked shelves, packaged some online orders that had come in and helped customers on the floor as you have to do a course to work at tills. I got the chance to go behind the dispensary to see what happens behind there and did a lot of paperwork!! I also got the opportunity to learn how to use the printing system and got to make a mug and cushion. I got to work with the best people and overall enjoyed the experience.

I did my TY work experience in Supervalu Cashel with my friend Eimear Ryan Preston.

For my work experience I went to Supervalu in Cashel. My hours were 10am to 2pm and I had a half hour break.

Most of the time I was stocking and facing off the shelves, price checking, organising the bakery and cleaning things like the coffee area and machine. I also packed some of the online orders which involved going around the shop and getting all the products that people ordered and putting them into a trolley. Overall I really enjoyed working in Supervalu and all the staff were very welcoming.

By Avril O Dwyer For my work experience I went to the Horse and Jockey shop- JJ O' Keeffe's. On Monday the 20th of November I started my work experience. My work experience started at 9:30am. Every day there was a new task to do such as stacking shelves and working on the till. I enjoyed working there because I learned a lot of new skills and how to work with others. Each day I got free lunch and a break.

All of the staff there were very friendly and I would love to go back and work there someday. I finished work every day at 2:00pm.

Each day we were given new tasks such as price checking, cleaning, stocking and facing off the shelves. I also did many online shopping orders. The staff were very friendly and very helpful.

I did my TY work experience in the “French Quarter Cafe” in the Excel Theater in Tipp Town.

I was working as a waitress. My jobs were to wash the dishes, serve tables, and make coffees and teas. I enjoyed making coffees such as americanos and cappuccinos, especially cappuccinos because making the designs on top was really fun.

Work Experience

The staff gave me lunch everyday and were super nice to me throughout the whole week.

For my first week of work experience I worked at Room 4 Café. I did a variety of different tasks there like learning how to make different types of coffee, milkshakes and smoothies. I also worked at the till and served customers. On the last day I had to stock up on different items for the shop. The staff there were really nice to work with and very helpful. I also really enjoyed getting to meet lots of interesting people. Overall I loved working here for work experience and have learned a lot from it.

I really enjoyed working there and I can't wait for the next week of work experience in February.

Around the schools Cashel Community School Work Experience– Veterinary Clinic

For my work experience I went to a veterinary practice based in Carlow. I stayed with my cousin as she works in the clinic as a veterinary nurse. I enjoyed this experience as it was a different location and routine to what I am used to in school. It was hard to help my employer as I was not informed in that area of work but it was always important to offer. I worked five days from 8am until 5pm, but on Thursday I worked from 11am until 6:30pm.

My jobs were: help open at 9am, hoover and mop the floors, put dirty towels and blankets that were used in the washing machine and dryer or put them away, feed the ‘in -patients’ (sick animals staying overnight), restock needles, injections and drugs.

After all of these tasks were carried out I would stand inside the surgery room and watch the vets and veterinary nurses at work. For a few of the days I went to farms attending sick cows and giving them TB injections. I enjoyed the farm visits the most.

I think that work experience is a very important part of TY as it gives us the opportunity to grow and learn. I really enjoyed this week and I’m looking forward to my other work experience next year.

Young Scientists Exhibition 2024 Written By Manmeet Singh

Our Trip To The Young Scientist Exhibition The BT Young Scientists Exhibition is an annual event that takes place in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS). Various students compete by making their own science projects in groups or individually. Their entries are evaluated by judges. The judges then select winners from various categories. This year is the 60th year of the Young Scientist in Ireland.

On the 11th of January all TY students went to Dublin to attend the exhibition. The buses departed at 8:30am. We made it to the RDS at around 11am. The first thing we did was attend a live show from a famous scientist named ‘Mark the Science Guy’. He provided us with an interesting performance about global warming and tornadoes. It was very interactive and many students in the audience got to participate in challenges on the stage for prizes. At around 12:30 pm the performance ended and we were given time to wander around the RDS and observe the projects from various schools all over Ireland as well as universities and businesses from Ireland and all over the world such as UCC and Meta. We also looked at entries from schools as well as our own schools entry.

TY Christmas Dinner

The YSI group organised a TY Christmas Dinner in Orchid Garden this year. On the 18th of December three members of the YSI team went down early to set up the restaurant. We put christmas crackers on the tables and set up a raffle. The staff at Orchid Garden prepared a menu for us and were very accommodating. We got gifts for Ms Neavyn, Mr Gallagher and Mr Nolan who came with us and helped make this event possible. All the TYs enjoyed their time there. A portion of the money was donated to the Samaritans local Tipperary/Limerick branch.

Green Schools As you may or may not know, our school has a Green Schools Committee.

We are a small group of students working towards making our school more sustainable and environmentally friendly by trying to come up with solutions for the litter and waste problems that exist within the school.

This committee started out last year as Neat Streets, and while the name is now different our goals are still the same. This year we are hoping to reduce, if not eliminate, the use of plastic bottles as they are one of the biggest contributors to litter around the school as well as being the least environmentally friendly ( a single plastic bottle takes 1,000 years to decompose ). As well as that we hope to increase awareness about the misuse of the bins around the schools which is effectively making it impossible to recycle most of the materials being thrown away as they end up in the wrong bins. As a committee we have implemented new bin labels to remind students what items go into which bins but it is up to you to do your part.

At 2:45 pm we were told to gather at our meeting point and enter our buses to begin our journey back home. On the way we stopped at ‘Junction 14’ which is a motorway service with several fast food chains such as Subway, Supermacs and much more. We were given 20 minutes to purchase any food we desired to eat before we continued on our way home. We made it back home on time at around 5:30pm. We were all quite tired but found the day very enjoyable.

Hurry Up and Leaf Cashel Community School also took part in The Young Scientist competition this year. This is the fourth year that we have taken part in this competition. The students had high expectations as all of our previous entries have won some sort of category. A group consisting of fifth year students: Maeve Carroll, Tori Kirwan and Lilian Quinn managed to qualify for the competition with the aid of Mr. Quinn.

Their project was entitled ‘Hurry Up and Leaf’ and was under the ‘Biological and Ecological’ category. Their project studied the science of leaf decomposition which is a huge issue for lawn owners and other methods such as raking which isn't good for the soil quality.

The students experimented with various additives and fertilizers to find one that can speed up leaf decomposition without damaging the soil quality.

The students had to spend several days in Dublin presenting their project in the RDS to the judges and others attending the event.

The students' work was rewarded as their project received second place in the senior category in ‘Biology and Ecology’. This is a huge achievement as receiving second place among the hundreds of other groups that participated is not an easy feat.

Praise for Tipperary County Council as Minister opens €10m developments Tipperary County Council is leading the way when it comes to house building, according to Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, who was in north Tipperary on Monday to officially open a number

of developments. All-in-all, Minister O’Brien opened an estimated €10m investment in upwards of 50 separate housing units at Woodview Close, Nenagh; Mulkear View in Newport and Portroe.

“Tipperary County Council

needs to be commended for the work they are doing,” he said. “They will exceed their target again this year. Last year saw a reduction of 14% on the social housing waiting lists.”

The Minister praised Tipperary County Council

Chief Executive Joe MacGrath and his team, saying they were making a “real step up in housing delivery”. And he also praised the quality of the housing being delivered in small developments of around 12 units.

Deputy O’Brien also pointed to the commencement of around 500 private housing units in Tipperary last year, an increase of 21% on 2022.

“They are one of the leading local authorities in the country with their housing mix and

track record,” he said.

Minister O’Brien said the Council had also bought 80 houses under the Tenant in Situ Scheme and had brought 470 voids back into use, as well as using the Croí Cónaithe scheme.

Medals Presentation Night Saturday evening we held our Juvenile Club medal presentation night. Sincere thanks to our excellent MC on the night, Juvenile club secretary John Kennedy.

Thanks also to Kevin Coonan who was our Juvenile Club special guest on the night who presented the boys with their medals from the 2023 season where our U15s won a county feile title and our U13s won a North Tipp title. 25 years ago last year Kevin captained Tipperary junior footballers to an All Ireland title and it was very fitting that Kevin was on hand to distribute our football

medals this evening. Thank you to everyone who came together and rowed in from all aspects of the club to make this evening the resounding success it was, well done to everyone in the Nenagh GAA underage family, Éire Óg Abú!

Kevin Coonan presentation Congratulations from the Nenagh Éire Óg Juvenile club to Kevin Coonan from Nenagh Éire Óg, who 25 years ago last year captained Tipperary to All Ireland Junior football title success.

To mark this anniversary Kevin was presented with a plaque by Juvenile Club Secretary John Kennedy as

part of Saturday evenings medals presentation night.

Congratulations to Kevin and his team mates on their magnificent achievement, hopefully this will inspire the children to dream big and recognise that great achievements are possible in football at Nenagh Éire Óg.

Tipperary Well done to Jake Morris and Barry Heffernan who were part of the Tipperary Senior squad who beat Limerick in the Dillon Quirke foundation challenge game.

Town Cashel

Despite reservations from some at the time, when plans to move the fire station in Cashel were announced, the relocation to a new permanent home at Wallers Lot, looks like being a huge success, as the 3.2 million euro facility was officially opened last week. The new station includes the most modern equipment for tackling fires, and other duties that the volunteers who provide such a wonderful service require.

That along with training and meeting rooms, which make up a big part of the expanded work of firefighters in the modern era.

The work done by the men and women who suit up is always a

paradox to people. You never want to see them, but when you need to, they are the first to be there, and always tackle every situation with the highest level of professionalism. The move from Ladyswell Street no doubt brought back a lot of memories, no more than the move from Friar Street to Ladyswell before that did. But no matter where the trucks were stationed, it was the hard work, the quick reactions, the selfless bravery in the face of great danger, that made the service, no matter where the station was. That will no doubt carry on, and we wish them all the best in their new home.

Cashel survive late drama to pick up draw on the road in Navan Navan 13 – 13 Cashel Cashel needed some luck and bad shooting from their opponents at the death, to secure a point in this game, but it didn’t stop their supporters from justifiably thinking they were about to be on the end of a great injustice before the final whistle blew in this rip roaring contest. Playing against the wind, time up, and already three ghost minutes of extra time played, before the referee gave the home side another hard to explain penalty, made the Cashel crowd wonder if more than the fates of rugby were against them.

Especially when the penalty count was already against them two to one. And the home side, desperately needing a win. The Navan penalty was awarded on the twenty two, slightly left of the goal posts and the kicker had converted three far more difficult kicks during the game. You can do no more than look and hope. The kick was hit well but in trying to steer the ball, it drifted left of the post and wide. There was total silence except for the few loyal Cashel supporters who travelled.

There were some comments after the game. Some that couldn’t be repeated in polite company. To some of Cashel’s rugby fraternity, it confirmed that there is a God, but the overriding feeling was that justice had been done and the game ended in a draw.

Every game in the league is important.

Cashel needed a win to stay competitive in second place. The Navan need was greater as they were rooted at the bottom of the table for some mysterious reason for such a fine team. From the kick off they came out of the blocks like a bat out of hell and tore into the visitors. They had pace to burn out wide, and within three minutes they had been awarded four penalties. A harbinger of things to come. But this Cashel team are made of stern stuff and weathered the storm. Within ten minutes, it was the visitors causing the problems, and they opened the scor-

ing when Ben Twomey slotted over a penalty to register the first score of the game. The game flowed ended to end after this, but the next significant action was a blow for Cashel as centre Jamie Ryan had to leave the field with an injury. But they answered that adversity by increasing their lead, thanks to Twomey’s trusty left boot. The visitors looked to be in control, but refereeing decisions continued to baffle, and the man in the centre seemed to miss not one, but two knock ons in a phase of play four minutes before the break, that lead to the home side registering the first try of the game, and with the conversion under the posts, they added the extra points. Still shocked by this, the visitors conceded another penalty late in the half, and went to the break, ten points to six behind.

The pace of the game increased in the second half but eight minutes in, with the wind behind them, another Navan penalty pushed them seven points ahead. Lesser teams might have cracked at this point, but Cashel just rolled up their sleeves. The try of the game came after fifty five minutes.

Jack Evenden made a break for Cashel on half way. James Ryan and Brendan Ryan made ground and offloaded to Kevin O’Connor who weaved his way over in the corner. The conversion would grace any rugby field. Out on the left wing with the wind blowing into his face Ben Twomey slotted the kick to level the game. Cashel had a period of total dominance during which the brought play constantly to the hosts end line, but always seemed to lose out to an odd call by the whistler. Until the late drama. In the end, both sides got something from the game. Navan moved off the bottom but still have work to do. Cashel are still in second place but are being chased down by Barnhall who visit town in two weeks. There’s still plenty to play for this year.

Nellie with night of fun and friendship in Halla na Féile The name Nellie Ryan will always be synonymous with Halla na Féile, after she spent so much of her life making sure that the grand old Hall would be there to be used by the people of Cashel and beyond. And Nellie never loved the Hall more than when it rang to the sounds of music, tapping feet and the laughter of the people who came there to enjoy the social dancing. And for a long time, in Ireland, the social interactions and benefits of the dance, had almost disappeared, and maybe would

have done, except for the grit and determination of people like Nellie to make sure it didn’t. That was the abiding topic of conversation amongst the large crowd that turned out at the Hall last Friday night, to celebrate Nellies life and life’s work, in making sure that she left a legacy to pass on.

It was proper on the night that the music was provided by one of her favourite musicians, her nephew, the well-known and much loved Fran Curry, who has had great success on the music circuit as part of his duo

with Muriel O’Connor. The night was a special tribute to a special person, a community person, who throughout her life gave to her beloved Cashel.

She was the face of Social Dancing in Halla Na Feile and built it up to the success it is currently enjoying. No doubt she was smiling down on those who swayed round the Hall on Friday, or who sat chatting with friends over a cup of tea, and she’d have made sure to let them all know, not to be strangers and to come back again soon.

Cashel Library Notes The Cashel Craft Circle meets every Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm. This group brings together individuals who share a passion for various crafts, ranging from card making to knitting. While the group does not offer formal instruction, they do however, exchange ideas and provide guidance on knitting and crochet. Of course, no meeting would be complete without a much-needed tea break and lively conversations!

Cashel girls shine at All Ireland Lyrical Dance championships There was great success for a number of Cashel and Clonmel girls at the weekend in Bundoran, Co. Donegal, when members of the “On Your Toes” dance academy won a range of top prizes at the All-Ireland Lyrical and Jazz Dance Championship.

The Academy was founded in 1989 by twin sisters Gillian Fitzgerald and Majella Forte and has been steadily growing in both size and reputation since. It runs classes in Clonmel at the “On Your Toes” dedicated studio, and in Cashel at the Lawrence Academy of Dance on Main Street. The sisters also run satellite classes in Clerihan, Tipperary Town and New Inn, where dozens of dancers from junior, juvenile to senior show off their talents every week. The other string to the sisters bow, are their gymnastic classes, with the sport making somewhat of a resurgent comeback in recent years and now gathering quite a following in Tipperary and nationwide.

But it’s also important to note, that first and foremost, the dancing and gymnastics are about fun. They are about nurturing the talents and skills

of all the dancers at their own different levels, and there is no pressure to advance to competition, but it is there if they want to do it. For those that do, they get to train in a coaching environment and travel local, nationally and internationally to compete.

And that was what lead them to the other end of the country last weekend, to Bundoran, to compete in the national championships which were being run under the watchful eye of the global body, the World Lyrical Dance Federation.

The trip North was long and arduous, but the girls were straight into competition on Saturday, and showed no signs of travel sickness as they got right into the groove. The costumes were colourful and the routines complicated, but each dancer put the weeks and months of work and preparation to good use, and showed as they always do, that the Tipperary competitive spirit was not just there to take part, but to take titles. Two of the dancers finished the day as All Ireland champions, with Cashel’s Clodagh O’Meara Ryan winning out in the senior

All Ireland Lyrical, and Ruby Buckley taking honours in the Lyrical and Jazz categories.

There were other dancers who picked up seconds and third place podium finishes on the day also.

On the second day of competition on Sunday, the Academy added another host of national wins, with Caoimhe Condon from Clerihan picking up a win in her category in the Lyrical section, followed by Daisy Mai Weymouth winning in both the Lyrical and Jazz championships. Daisy Mai then joined Ailbhe McGarry to take top of the podium in the Lyrical Duo section. The two winners of the Duo’s then joined with Ruby Buckley and Naomi Maber Brown to pick off the All-Ireland juvenile quad section, with the icing on the cake of the weekend being finished when Clodagh O’Meara Ryan and Caoimhe Condon were joined by four of the juvenile quad team, to win the All-Ireland senior Lyrical championship. Overall the final tally for the weekend was seven All-Ireland wins and a lot of very happy dancers. They were also joined by many very happy parents and supporters who made the journey to support them, and saw all their sacrifices getting the reward that they deserved.

The journey for these girls and for Gillian and Majella is far from over. As well as the girls competing in Donegal at the weekend, another troupe were at the opposite end of the country in Cork, at the Cork City Slow Dance Championships. And that emphasised the spread of ages

All-Ireland champions. and numbers of members, where the dancers not only get to do something they love, but do it with their friends, while making lots more friends all over the country on the way.

Gillian and Majella will tell you that it’s hard to believe that they are now offering their advice and mentorship for thirty five years this year.

But they hope there are plenty more miles in the tank and lots of new faces to come through their doors yet. They are always welcoming of new members and urge parents to let their children give it a try as there’s so much to be said, for just doing something you love. They can be contacted via their social media pages, or just dropping into a studio.

Closure of Prime 74 Restaurant is yet another blow to Tipp town Hot on the heels of the news of the closure of Flanagan’s Lane Restaurant last week came the news of the immediate closure of Prime 74 Restaurant in Tipperary Town. In a post on social media the proprietor Martin Lovell said that it breaks our hearts to have to share this news with you all. “Prime 74 will be closing its doors after 8 years in business, with immediate effect. Along with the countless other similar cases in hospitality, we too could not sustain operations due to the never ending challenges in the sector, from rising costs to staff shortages. We did our

best to bring something different to Tipperary Town, offering somewhere to go for a unique dining experience championing locally sourced foods & ingredients. We have some fantastic memories while open in Tipperary, as we hope you have too whilst dining here. It would not have been possible without our amazing local suppliers, customers and all the wonderful staff who have been with us throughout the years. We know it was a special place for so many to gather with friends and family. Please continue to support local businesses

in the town during these challenging times, hoping for brighter days ahead” concluded Martin.

Flanagan’s Lane Restaurant which was due to close on Friday January 26th did not open as planned on Monday January 22nd. A further notice on social media read that “due to unforeseen circumstances we will not be open this Tuesday to Friday. A huge thank you to all the amazing messages we received, it has been so heartwarming during this difficult time. Any gift vouchers can be used at our sister restaurant Flanagan’s on the Lake”.

Trailblazing Nun remembered Tipperary Musical Society prepare for their 42nd production Tipperary Musical Society are heading into the final stages of rehearsals for their upcoming production of “Young Frankenstein”.

This production of “Young Frankenstein” is a musical comedy, with a book by the legendary Mel Brooks in partnership with Thomas Meehan, and music and lyrics by Brooks. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Gene Wilder and Brooks, who also directed, and who described it as his best film.

It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and its 1935 and 1939 sequels, “Bride of Frankenstein” and “Son of Frankenstein”. “Young Frankenstein” will be directed by Paul Norton, alongside Stephanie Browne as Choreographer. Mary Rose McNally also returns as Musical Director for this hugely anticipated horror comedy. The production will run from the 12th to

17th of February, 2024 in the Tipperary Excel Centre. The cast will feature Kilkenny man, Kevin Reade, in the title role of Frederick Frankenstein.

Kevin made his debut with TMS last year, where he played Saint Aphrodisius in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. Emmet Donlan returns to the TMS stage after giving an intense performance in last years production, playing the role of Quasimodo. This year Emmet plays Igor, Frankenstein’s loyal yet clumsy assistant. AIMS award winner and TMS stalwart, Deirdre Ryan, will play the mysterious, but hilarious, Frau Blucher.

Emma Sunderland returns to TMS to play Inga, the yodeling lab assistant.

Emma’s last performance with Tipperary Musical Society was in “Fiddler on the Roof ” in 2022 where she played Hodel, for which she received a nomination for the AIMS Best Female Singer Award. Joining the

stellar front line in this hilarious musical are Adam Skeffington as The Monster, Rachel Breen as Elizabeth Benning, Derek Ryan as Inspector Kemp, James O’Donovan as The Hermit, Cole Flanagan as Victor Frankenstein and Eimhín O’Meara as Ziggy, the village idiot. Young Frankenstein will be Tipperary Musical Society’s, 42nd annual musical, with the society having celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2021.

Tickets will go on sale on January 29th from the “Young Frankenstein” ticket desk in the Tipperary Excel Centre from 11am. Ticket prices are between €18 and €25 (plus booking fee, if booking online), with group discounts available for the Monday and Tuesday performances. A Mercy Nun that I would describe as a ‘trailblazer’ was laid to rest on Monday January 15th in St. Michael’s cemetery, Tipperary Town. A native of Co. Offaly, Sr. Mairead Ryan, was known particularly for her former role as Regional Development Officer with the Cashel & Emly Youth Service (now Youth Work Ireland Tipperary), which began its formative years in the late 1970’s/early 1980’s. I well recall the beginnings when Sr. Mairead secured funding for the Cashel and Emly Youth Service as part of the National Youth Federation.

As a young guy in Bansha I contacted my local priest to enquire about setting up a youth club in Bansha and he pointed me in the direction of Sr. Mairead Ryan. It was the beginning of a great adventure in youth work and of a great friendship with Sr. Mairead. Not alone was she a great mentor to the many club leaders who came through the service but she became a friend also, a friendship that would last throughout the years. Sr. Mairead created a professional youth work services team and worked with them, as a team, to grow a youth service throughout the region. Sr. Mairead was

the manager and leader and totally committed to quality and innovation. She enabled young people to grow and develop, and provided them with the tools to actively contribute to their parishes and clubs. Her contribution to youth and community work was immense and was not confined to the region but extended throughout the country. Sr. Mairead’s impact was not alone felt with young people throughout the region but also extended to Templemore where many recall her generous commitment to the Social Services, in which she pioneered a new apostolate with energy and vitality, and in Drangan also where she founded the Ladies Club. Up until her health deteriorated Sr. Mairead resided at the Sisters of Mercy house at Knockanrawley, Tipperary town. While living there she immersed herself into the local community through involvement in some of the groups attached to the nearby Knockanrawley Resource Centre and was also a founder member of the Tipperary Town Active Retirement Association. Whether it was a local field day, a sponsored walk or a St. Patrick’s Day

Parade, you would find Sr. Mairead in the middle of it! She had a great sense of humour and liked nothing better than to participate in any event or to dress up if required. Sr. Mairead was a very spiritual person and involved herself in different groups that promoted prayer and the environment. She also did wonderful work for the less privileged in our society and she did so without any fuss and in a nice quiet and discreet manner.

Sr Mairead will always be remembered for her kindness, her commitment to people and her lovely sense of fun.

She has left a huge legacy for all those who have followed in her footsteps. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

The esteem in which she was held was evidenced by the large attendance at her reposal in the Convent Church and at her Funeral Mass and Burial in St. Michael’s cemetery.

Deepest sympathy to her sister Joan (USA), her mercy communities in Tipperary and South Central Province, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. God rest her gentle soul.

O’Heney lays down a major statement of intent On Friday night last the 26th of January, the Campaign Launch Night for CashelTipperary LEA Independent Candidate John O’Heney, took place in Ballykisteen Hotel. Anyone who was under the assumption that this first time candidate might have been content to make up the numbers in the Cashel-Tipperary Local Elections this year, were given their answer as hundreds of people packed into the function room of Ballykisteen Hotel, in what has to been seen as a major show of support for the new candidate. There were three main speakers on the night; Sister Bernadette O’Grady, Mr David O’Heney and Mr William Kinnane, who spoke on the topics of Local Business, Rural Affairs & Agriculture, and Social Issues. Several local people also spoke from the floor about some of the projects

John has been involved in, and the difference that these projects have made locally.

MJ Buckley, owner of the Junction Gastrobar and Al Mooney of the Sight-saver Bus project were amongst the contributors. There was a very interesting Youth Panel Discussion, which featured Sean Landers, Liam Carew (BT Young Scientist Winner 2023) and Donna Breen. Local lady Orla Landers, had a stand where people could Register to Vote, and the evening was brilliantly MC’d by Breifne O’Brien. Paudie Coen (of the Rebel Hearts) and his daughters Neasa and Saoirse provided some wonderful musical pieces that made it a very enjoyable evening for all in attendance. In his keynote speech John O’Heney referred to his focus on some of the key issues in the campaign and to his large scale community

involvement over many years, and he outlined his concern over the lack of political representation in large parts of West Tipperary. He passionately told the audience “You have the choice as the voters. We have an opportunity to make a change, let’s not waste it. If you want change, you need to believe that we can do it together, thereby you need to vote John O’Heney No 1 on the 7th of June” said O’Heney. The independent candidate sees this as a community based campaign, that has the needs of the people of West Tipperary at heart. It was a great start to the campaign for O’Heney with a major statement of intent laid down by him on the night. The gloves are most definitely off for this campaign and we look forward to hearing from all the candidates in the run up to the local elections.

An Post is planning major changes for the Post Office in Tipperary Town Tipperary Town can not be a punching bag for savings says Councillor An Post is announcing plans to change the Tipperary Town Post Office into a contractor run Post Office. If the move goes ahead as planned, Tipperary will join the majority of national post offices, of which more than 95% of the country’s 900 plus offices, are run by contractors. Fewer than 40 post offices nationally are run directly by An Post.

In a briefing note issued to TD’s on Friday last, An Post state that staff formerly employed at the Tipperary Post office will take up a number of possible options, including taking up employment for the new Postmaster or being redeployed within the An Post network. “It is likely that a new location for the post office will be sought by the new Postmaster, which is a significant business opportunity for the newly appointed Postmaster.

Changing the business model of a Post Office does not impact on the level or variety of services which

are available to customers.

Continuation of service is of key importance to An Post. All services available before the change will remain available after the change” says the notice.

The change may impact 6 staff at Tipperary Post Office who provide counter services. The company says there are no plans for now to change the mail distribution service that also operates from the facility on Davis Street. The Post Office opened at its current location at Davis Street in July 1980, having previously been located on Main Street. An Post says that the location of the new service will probably be in a different premises and that the timescale for the change will be over the coming months.

Meanwhile Tipp town Sinn Féin Councillors, Tony Black and Annemarie Ryan and Deputy Martin Browne, say that they are keen to impress upon An Post that Tipperary Town should not continue to

be a punching bag when it comes to savings and expenses. “The town has suffered long enough.

We need a break and we need An Post to cut us that break. There are a lot of guarantees needed to placate the justified worries of local people. Will there be a town centre location, are the staff going to be worse off in the aftermath of this, will An Post step back in if a postmaster can’t continue to provide the service to the town? We will be interested to hear the answers to these questions.

As far as we are concerned, An Post can pick another town to enforce this change upon. Tipperary Town needs to be safeguarded.

Enough is enough” says a statement issued by Cllr.

Tony Black. Deputy Martin Browne says that he will seek clarification from An Post about the security of services in Tipperary town in the longer term and says the announcement creates uncertainty for Tipperary town. “It is

vital that An Post services must remain in the town centre to support the local economy and broader social wellbeing.

We believe that An Post should not be targeting Tipperary Town at all. The town has

a Government sponsored Task Force precisely because it is deprived.

This decision only brings further uncertainty into the equation. We are very clear that whatever is the outcome, An Post services must remain

in the town centre. We are all aware that the town has lost a number of businesses recently. We cannot afford to ignore any potential threat to the Post Office” concluded Deputy Browne, who has received assurances from

An Post that all 6 Counter positions are secure and that staff will have the option of taking up employment with the new Postmaster, or redeploying elsewhere within the An Post network if that if their preference.

Three of our Junior Chorus members featured in the show – Rory Fyler, Catherine Tunstall and Eve Dundon – and we congratulate them on their fine performances.

TMS is delighted to support all of the secondary school shows in the area with Coláiste Mhuire, the Ursuline Secondary School and the Presentation Secondary

School all staging top class musicals since last Autumn.

The reaction amongst the general public to these shows was magnificent and it is wonderful to see so many young adults getting the opportunity to shine on stage.

At present we are seeking patronage, sponsors and advertisers for our show which will be a very costly affair. If you can help out in any way or would like to be associated with the Irish premiere of Big Fish, we would be delighted to hear from you.

The late Donal Sammon’s photographic selection for the Source To mark the 100th anniversary of his birth, the Sammon family in Thurles in association with The Source Library is presenting an exhibition of photographs taken by the late Donal Sammon, Liberty Square, Thurles.

The exhibition launch will take place Tuesday 6th February at 7pm and the exhibition will continue fo r the month of February where up to 150 photographs taken by Donal will be displayed during normal library opening hours.

Donal was born on St Valentine’s Day, 1924 in Rusheen, Shinrone, Co. Offaly. His parents were William Sammon, a farmer from Rusheen and Bridget Sammon (nee Corcoran), a well renowned midwife.

Having started school in Behamore, Donal at the age of 8 moved to live with his aunt Ellie Corcoran in Mathew Avenue in Thurles and continued his education in Thurles CBS. He was a distinguished hurler in his younger days and was selected on the Tipperary Minor Hurling Team in 1940, 1941 and 1942. He played at varying levels with Thurles Sarsfields and all through his life he remained an ardent supporter of the club.

On finishing his Leaving Certificate he began his pharmaceutical apprenticeship in PJ Hickeys in Liberty Square and then went to Trinity

College where he studied and qualified in Pharmacy.

He worked in Dublin initially but returned to Thurles and worked in Hickey’s Pharmacy and Tobin’s Pharmacy in Liberty Square.

At this stage both his parents were deceased but he continued to live with his Aunt Ellie in Matthew Avenue. In the mid 1950s he met and fell in love with Jenny Power who worked in Bank Of Ireland in Liberty Square and who was originally from Kilfinane Co. Limerick. They married on 10th September 1957 and subsequently had 5 children -Gerard, Breda, Donal, Therese and Carmel.

After they married they continued to live in Matthew Avenue until 1962 when Donal purchased Devlin’s Medical Hall in Liberty Square for the princely sum of £7,000 including stock. His first day takings were £45.

The pharmacy contained a treasure of old artifacts including cameras and Donal developed a keen interest in photography. A very accomplished golfer, Donal held the position of Honorary Treasurer for many years he was Captain of Thurles Golf Club in 1973.

He continued to run the pharmacy until 2004 when he handed the reins over to his daughter Carmel, who continues the tradition to this day.

Donal Sammon passed away on July 3rd, 2010 and the Sammon family thought that a great way to mark what would have been his 100th birthday would be to exhibit his photos and make them available for all the public to enjoy.

This personal archive gathers images of Liberty Square, Friar Street, Slievenamon Road, Ladyswell, Thurles Golf Club and Semple Stadium.

Also on display are unique items relating to Donal’s pharmacy located in the landmark building, Devlin’s Medical Hall on Liberty Square.

Kieran steps down after 19 Grease takes years as Thurles Gaels Secretary Thurles by storm After nineteen years of loyal and dedicated service to Thurles Gaels GAA club, Kieran O’Dwyer stepped down as Secretary at the recent AGM and was lauded for his fine work for the club.

Kieran was a Thurles Fennelly’s man until Thurles Gaels came into being and he continued to give great service to the amalgamated club, running its affairs and ensuring that progress was made on and off the field

– the magnificent facilities now evident in Kickham Park are testimony to the vision of Kieran and others who went about putting the facilities at the disposal of the club members with the astro turf and hurling wall being the more recent additions.

Kieran is one of the longest standing committee members around since the Fennellys days and his job has not always been a straight forward one- -

there have been tough days and there have been great days but Kieran was always a constant for everyone at the club.

Thurles Gaels members paid tribute to Kieran for his tremendous service and looked forward to his continuous involvement in various capacities over the next era. The club also has a new Chairman with Bobby Wade coming on board – exciting times ahead for Thurles Gaels no doubt.

Congratulations to Thurles Sarsfields stars Karen Kennedy and Ronan Maher who were the recipients of the Tipperary Annerville Awards on Saturday night in Clonmel for Camogie and Hurler of the year 2023.

Karen had an outstanding season in the Tipperary and Sarsfields colours as the Premier County won the Munster senior crown. And, Ronan was the driving force behind the Blues journey to the county senior hurling final and replay, as well as being one of Tipperary’s standout players in 2023.

The Thurles duo were the popular winners of the prestigious Annerville Awards and were delighted to attend with family and friends and to receive their presentations on the night.

Congratulations to the Colaiste Mhuire U16 basketball team and their mentors after they were crowned All-Ireland champions last week – a magnificent achievement for the school considering the stiff opposition they faced in the National Basketball Arena.

It was standing ovations all round as Thurles CBS Secondary School enthralled a packed Premier Hall for five performances of the hit musical Grease last week.

With hit after hit all familiar to the more than 2,500 patrons who attended the three nights and two matinee performances, there was a wonderful atmosphere in the Premier Hall as the show directed by Mary Lloyd with Musical Director Deirdre Ryan Preston went down a real treat.

There were stunning performances all round with the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies working brilliantly with the cast and the chorus which amounted to 110 young men and women – the girls were drawn from the Presentation and Ursuline Secondary Schools and added considerably to the show.

Work on this show had been underway since before Christmas and it all paid off when the curtain rose for the first time last Thursday.

From then, the show just took on a life of its own and the crescendo which greeted the final notes on Saturday

evening practically lifted the roof off of the Premier Hall – a venue which has staged many a memorable show down through the years.

Varying criteria can be used to critique shows, but ultimately when one hundred and ten teenagers take to the stage, together with scores of others working backstage, front of house, in the box office, on props, costumes, hair, make-up, set construction, scenery painting, and in so many other areas, it has to be considered a success.

That they were allowed to explore outside the normal educational box, delve into their creative forces and bring a show to the stage which thrills the audience is a super bonus. And, that’s exactly what they did – they wowed the attendances and as Principal Tiernan O’Donnell described as he paid tribute to all involved afterwards, they nailed it.

What a wonderful way to see out the last week of January with a warm glow covering all who made the trip to the Premier.

Take a bow one and all on a magnificent spectacle.

Pres Thurles continue soccer dominance Heartiest congratulations to the Presentation Secondary School in Thurles who were once again crowned Munster Senior A champions for the eighth time in eleven years – an incredible achievement.

The school has become the dominant soccer nursery in the province and with this competition regarded as being like the Dr Harty Cup in senior second level hurling, it gives an indication of the kind of strength that exists in the code in Presentation, Thurles.

The fact that a number of different teams have won the competition for Presentation Thurles points to the magnificent coaching and tutelage the girls are receiving. And, Presentation Thurles with 550 pupils is one of the schools with the smallest pick in the province, thereby enhancing their

achievement further still.

The girls returned home to the school with the silverware for the eighth time in eleven years to a

Presentation Thurles soccer team were once again crowned Munster champions.

Fethard Players sell out performance Congratulations to Fethard Players on their sell-out production of this year’s comedy ‘The Maiden Night’. The show opened on Monday night last, January 29, at the Abymill Theatre to a capacity crowd who really

showed their appreciation with a standing ovation for the cast members at the final curtain.

Ticket sales have also been phenomenal with only a dozen tickets available for the remaining five performances up to Saturday

night.

Well done to producer, Marian Gilpin, for her second recordbreaking sales production for the Fethard Players since their return to the stage in January 2023, after a three-year absence.

Social dancing in Fethard Ballroom Social dancing continues at Fethard Ballroom’s on Sunday, February 4, to the music of the ‘Unity’. All are welcome to come along and enjoy a great night’s entertainment and social dancing from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. Admission is €10, which includes tea and cakes.

The late Noreen Evans who died on Frisay, January 26, 2024 The death has occurred on Friday, January 26, 2024, of Noreen Evans, No 6 Congress Terrace, Fethard, peacefully, in the care of the staff of Croí Óir, Cashel. Predeceased by her parents Nora and Daniel Evans, her sisters Maura and Annie and her brother Sean.

She will be sadly missed by her sisters Frances and Agnes, her nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. May her gentle soul rest in peace. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.

The death has occurred on Sunday, January 28, 2024, of Tina Looby, Carrigataha, Cahir, and formerly Kerry Street, Fethard.

Tina passed peacefully after an illness borne with courage and dignity. Predeceased by her parents Bill and Rita. She will be forever missed by her loving partner Johnny, brother Jimmy, sisters Joan and Pat, sister-in-law Catherine, nephew Bill, nieces Elaine, Miriam, Colette and Kate, extended family, neighbours and her many great friends.

Tina’s Funeral Mass takes place on Wednesday, January 31, at 11.30am in St. Nicholas’ Church, Grange, followed by cremation at Shannon Crematorium, Co. Clare.

John passed away peacefully in the tender care of the staff of St Anthony’s Unit, Clonmel, in the presence of his loving family. Recently pre-deceased by his wife Jean, he will be sadly missed by his daughters Nora, Mary, Barbara and Sinéad, son Peter, grandchildren D.J. and Jean, brothers Joe, Connie and Peter, sisters Mary and Margaret, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. He enjoyed all sports and had the honour of wearing a county jersey for Tipperary for a number of years and afterwards serving his club at administrative level. A keen golfer also, he made friends on the course and at the 19th hole.

May he rest in peace. Eamon Keating R.I.P. There was deep sadness with the news that Eamon Keating Hillcrest Mount Anglesby Clogheen had passed to his eternal reward after a short illness. Eamon was a noted star of the GAA , both locally and county level. Eamon along with his wife Margaret ran a very successful grocery and public house in Clogheen. Keatings was one of the first music pub in rural Ireland and a regular band at the time was Jerry Hayes and the Hillbillies. Eamon is survived by his wife Margaret, son John, daughters Orla and Audrey and his grandchildren and all his extended family. May he rest in peace. Eamon was buried in Shanrahan cemetery following requiem mass officiated by Fr John Nally, Fr James Ayuba and

Fr Jack Meade.

Fr Sheey’s GAA We lost one of our club and county greats Eamon Keating last Tuesday morning aged 89.

Eamon was a star midfielder on the famous Burncourt/Clogheen team that won the County Junior Football title in 1960.

Eamon played for the Tipperary minor footballers and also the Tipperary senior team from 1955-1960. Eamon went on to become our club chairman and ran a successful pub business in Clogheen for many years. After he retired he kept in touch with his many friends in Fr. Sheehy’s and was a great source of local historical knowledge. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

CBS Mitchelstown have reached the Munster B u19 football final beating Kerry’s Rathmore on Saturday . Well done to Fr Sheehy’s representatives John English, Cathal English and Daire English and best of luck in the final next weekend.

Saints came from behind to take the points at the Complex on Sunday in a dour uncompromising encounter, in which the strong wind hindered the game as a spectacle with passes overhit and the ball out of play a lot. The away side were favoured going into the game and had the bulk of the early chances with Paul Breen, Shane Ryan and Rhys O’Regan on his return to Clonmel going close in the first twenty minutes. But they were rocked at the end of the first quarter when they coughed up possession in the middle of the park, and Ian Cleary did well to

make space and fire a right foot shot beyond Adrian Walsh to give first blood to Town. O’Regan was just wide of goal shortly after from a Jimmy Carr pass, as they tried to get back level, but they were almost caught out again on the half hour, when Adrian Walsh was forced to make a good reflex save to tap over a half volley from Jack O’Donnell from the edge of the area. Seven minutes before the break came a significant turning point in the game when Town were reduced to ten men after a quick fire double yellow card, and although they kept their slender lead to the break, it always looked like the second half was going to feel a lot longer than usual for them. And so it proved, as within three minutes of the restart the game was level again

after a Russell Quirke free kicked was parried into the path of Sean Guerins who forced the ball home for Saints. The visitors looked to push home the extra man advantage and Town’s only out ball was French Davis in attack who showed pace down the right, but constantly came up against the solid Saints backline. This tie turned out to be the veritable game of two halves, with a strong win dominating the play for the duration of the game. In the end it was Celtic that came from behind to record the win, which leaves the home side in relegation trouble at the bottom end of the table. The wind favoured Borris in the first half and they had the better of the early play, opening the scoring in the fifteenth minute when Loran O Toole headed home a corner kick fired in by Jamie Lee. League leaders Cashel Town continued their relentless push to get back to the top table of TSDL football by maintaining their seasons 100% record and recording their ninth win from nine on the road at Galbally. But the home side did make it hard

for them, producing a really good defensive display that almost managed to snag them a point. It might even have had been more if Jamie Morrissey had converted when going close for the hosts in the twentieth minute. In reality though it was the visitors who always seemed to be likeliest to score and Eoin Byrnes really should have done better with a

couple of chances before the sides went to the break scoreless. The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with Cashel dominating the game. They still had to wait until five minutes from time to make that pressure count when centre half Jack Fitzpatrick finished well after a corner wasn’t cleared, and the defender smashed home from close in.

Cahir Park continued to stay in touch at the top end of the Premier League table with a good win away to Tipperary Town on Sunday last. Both teams started well and some good football was played with chances at both ends.

Vinny Godfrey came closest to opening the score for the hosts,

before the visitors struck in the fifteenth minute, when Willie Dunne reacted quickest after the ball bounced around the six yard box, to poke home. They doubled their lead ten minutes later with Dunne again on target with a great header from close range after the home side had squandered a couple of good chances, leaving the Park two goals to the good at the break.

Saints got a late consolation goal four minutes from time when Danny O Brien was fouled in the penalty area and the veteran striker got up to smash the penalty to the net, but it was never enough to make any difference to the final destination of the points.

The news broke like a sledgehammer on Friday last. No inkling that anything was up. No rumour mill. No disquiet in the camp. In fact everyone seemed happy, smiles abounded. It seemed as though this was a revamped setup. A winning team at the top of the tree. Plenty to play for and a boundless energy about the place. But then, a push notification popped up on our screens mid-morning.

Not straight away you understand, rather at the end of the season. In four months’ time, Liverpool will play their final home game of the season at Anfield, against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the Kop will bid farewell to a German manager who has repositioned the club back to where its fans believe is its rightful place; at the top of world football.

What made this news so jaw dropping was its suddenness and the fact that no one saw it coming.

He had looked happy in recent months, and people assumed that his mirth was a reflection of how well the team were playing. But it now appears that his happiness could well be because he can see the finishing line.

Sport rarely does this anymore.

Managers are under such a microscope that their departure or sacking is usually well flagged.

Top tier managers rarely get the chance to exit on their own terms. Rather they dwell too long. Or else results dictate their fate, players down tools or in football parlance, ‘they throw the manager under the bus’. But this is different. Not only did no one see his departure coming, more impressively, those that knew kept shtum. Klopp had informed the top brass at Liverpool in November that he would be leaving. The players would have had to have been told well before the world’s media. Even the lads who cut the grass in Anfield probably knew well before Friday, and still no one said a word. In a world where everyone whips out their phone at the slightest whiff of a rumour, gets on the blower to a journalist, posts on social media; no one breathed a word.

A tribute to the esteem in which Klopp is held. He got to break the news on his own terms. In his own way. He wasn’t confronted at a press conference with the story.

He controlled the narrative from the start.

Mightily impressive.

No doubt the top brass at Liverpool are already putting out feelers in European football circles for a replacement. There wouldn’t be any point in leaving the recruitment drive until the

summer. And with such activity would come leaks. The news had to come out around now or else word would have gotten out and Klopp would have been blindsided at his next news conference and would have been on the back foot.

But the news breaking now is inevitably going to have an effect in the dressing room. That will be the curious thing to watch. Some have suggested that it may further galvanise the team and the players will want to win something for their outgoing boss. A strange analysis that. It suggests that the players have more to give. That the efforts thus far this season have been sub-optimal, and there is more in the tank, and that it took Klopp’s departure for them to find that little bit extra.

Back in the 2000-2001 season, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson announced that he would be leaving at the end of the season. It had an immediate effect on the team and performances nose-dived.

For all you see and hear from professional footballers, the badge kissing, the supposed love for the club and the fans, most, if not all, professional footballers are selfish at heart. I suppose they have to be. Clubs view them as commodities, that can be bought and sold at will. Liverpool lost their captain during the summer.

Jordan Henderson was on around £300,000 a week at Liverpool but transferred to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq, for around £700,000 a week. Making a very rich man even richer. Some much for badge kissing now. Playing in front of the world’s football watchers was not enough and off he popped to a footballing backwater.

So, back in 2000 when Ferguson announced he was leaving, his team felt a bit betrayed and rudderless. They all began worrying about themselves and their own futures. No one worried about the collective.

Performances suffered. A slide had begun. A slide that was halted only when Ferguson announced that he had had a change of heart and that he would remain on.

Players felt reassured again, stopped fretting about their own futures and began to focus once more on the collective. Guess who won the premier league in the 2000-2001 season?

Ferguson incidentally stayed on for a further 11 years after this U-turn, winning plenty more trophies.

I was discussing Klopp’s departure on Friday night in a Clonmel saloon with a friend, a

Manchester United loving friend.

He opined that Klopp was a good manager but not a great manager. He had only won one Premier League, one Champions League during his time at Liverpool. His record didn’t stand comparison with that of Ferguson. But when asked, if he would like to see Klopp manage Manchester United at some stage in the future, the answer was an emphatic ‘yes’. Even the most ardent of anti-Liverpool supporters acknowledge that right now, there are not too many Jürgen Klopps out there and that for all his bear hugging and chest beating, he does come across as one of the good guys.

A recent clip of him with Monaghan born Daire Gorman gives an insight into the man.

Players and managers are often asked to meet with supporters who are in hard luck and they turn up, smile for the cameras and give maybe five minutes of their time. But when Klopp met Daire, you could see that he had ear marked a great deal of his day to spend it with the 12 year old boy. This wasn’t some sort of public relations coup. He was genuinely interested in Daire and his story and his affection for the club.

Klopp wheeled him down to his office, past players, all of whom Klopp introduced Daire to. When he announced his departure last week, he even mentioned Daire and the fact that he was going to have to explain his decision to him personally. In short, Klopp is a man who is hard to dislike.

When Bill Shankly stepped down as Liverpool manager in 1974, he had spent 15 years laying foundations and his ready-made successor, Bob Paisley, went about building the place. There is no ready-made successor to Klopp. When Shankly arrived in 1959, Liverpool had been in second division for 5 years and had just lost to non-league Worcester City in the FA Cup. Anfield was in a state of disrepair and they had no means of even watering the pitch. Shankly had a vision for the club. ‘My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until everyone would have to submit to get in’.

Klopp took over a club in disarray. He reimagined the playing style and made good players better. Even at his time managing Borussia Dortmund, players always improve under his management. And when those players move on and play elsewhere, they are never as good again as they were under Klopp; Mario Götze, Philippe Coutinho,

Sadio Mané to name but three.

Liverpool supporters will have some sleepless nights in months to come. Most especially when they think Manchester about United after Ferguson. Or Manchester United after Matt Busby. Two larger than life managers who dominated their club with a Colossus like influence.

And whose successors could never emerge from the long shadow cast. Whose successors were always vulnerable by comparison to the great man who went before. Lean times came to Manchester when Busby left. Lean times again in Manchester w h e n Ferguson l e f t .

who were moved upstairs when they retired as manager and sat on the club’s board. TV cameras would turn to t h e m in the Directors box when t h e i r

successor was having a tough day. A tough job becomes an impossible job when your predecessor is watching from the stands.

There are only four months left in the life of the Jürgen Klopp era at Anfield Road. Every interview and press conference from now on will be pockmarked with questions about his departure. His players will have to also tolerate such questions repeatedly. It will inevitably intrude into the dressing room and will inevitably intrude on performances. Players who were signed by Klopp only last summer had a reasonable expectation, when they joined the club, that the manager would not be going anywhere, anytime soon. In fact, some of them possibly only chose to join Liverpool because of the manager. An opportunity to work under Klopp might well have been the factor that allowed Liverpool to sign players who may well have earned more money elsewhere. Those players may now be wondering what their future looks like and where their future might be.

Liverpool’s season could finish with a wonderful trophy laded flourish, or it could hit a wall.

It could be joyous or desolate.

Either way it will make for compulsive viewing. Sit back and enjoy the show. Any chance Jürgen, you might be interested in the Ireland job?

Impressive Tipp come up short VERY National Division 2B League Tipperary 0-09 Cork 1-10 A much-changed Tipperary Junior team from the one that lost to Clare in the All-Ireland final last August took to the field on Saturday to take on Cork in the opening round of the VERY National division 2b league. Playing with the aid of a strong wind Cork raced into an early lead with the opening 5 points of the game to put them 5 points clear after 15 minutes.

Cliona Dooley got the first score after 2 minutes followed by a Lauren Homan free before the influential Hannah O’Leary hit 3 in a row from open play.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic as Tipperary also had plenty of possession with Ciara Brennan and Gemma Fox in particularl starting brightly. Having wasted some scoring chances Tipp eventually got off the mark with a well taken point from Eire Og Annacarty’s Eva O’Dwyer on the 21st minute. Jenny Grace and Niamh O’Regan swapped points before Homan converted a free to leave Cork 0-7 to 0-2 in front at the break.

The crucial score of the game came just 32 seconds after the restart. A lack of concentration on Tipp’s behalf allowed Laura Doyle to make a surging run from her half backline and off load to Lauren Homan who finished to the net. It was a disastrous start to the second half for the homeside but they responded brilliantly to the setback showing great character and workrate to work themselves right back into the game. Jenny Grace hit the

next four points in succession from frees and play to reduce Cork’s lead to 1-07 to 6 after 40 minutes.

With the wind in their favour and the home crowd behind them Tipperary impressed throughout the second half.

Sinead Meagher cancelled out a Cliona Dooley point before Lauren Homan and Ciara Brennan traded scores. By now the bench was really beginning to make an impact with Jill Ann Quirke, Anna Fahie and Lorna Ryan adding great energy to Bill Mullaney’s side. With 60 minutes played only a single score separated the sides as Tipperary went in search of a goal to level proceedings.

Sinead Meagher came close with a bullet of a shot but Molly Lynch pulled off an excellent save to deny the Kiladangan player. Lauren Homan who captained the Cork side and was probably the difference between the 2 teams finished with a pointed free to seal a 1-10 to 9 point victory for the visitors.

Next up for Tipperary is a trip to Clare this Saturday.

IMRA MUNSTER BALLYHOURA MIDNIGHT 28k CHALLENGE & 13K DASH The IMRA MUNSTER BALLYHOURA MIDNIGHT 28K CHALLENGE & 13K DASH was held in Kilfinane, Co. Limerick on Friday 26th January.

Conditions were perfect with a nice dry night. It was a beautiful night in the mountains with a lovely full moon lighting the way.

Athletes had plenty of hills and some muddy terrain in places.

We had one Athlete compete in the 13k dash, and a fantastic performance from Barry Hartnett to finish 1st overall, in a time of 51.53, WINNING the race. This coming just 5 days after IIMRA Corrin Hill Trail Race where Barry placed 3rd male.

NEWCASTLE 5K ROAD RACE The NEWCASTLE 5K ROAD

RACE was held in Newcastle, Co Tipperary on Sunday 28th January. This is an annual 5k road race in aid of the local school.

The committee had a lovely tribute of memory ribbons for Athletes to wear to remember their friend

Colm Ryan who was a regular at this popular race. Val Farrell took on the challenging hilly course and battled against strong winds to finish in a time of 20.26.

he Allianz leagues are underway with the Tipperary footballers having had their first outing of the season on Saturday evening last in FBD Semple Stadium - unfortunately the result was of similar hue to last season with a defeat at the hands of Carlow.

However, if the result was less than satisfactory, the performance showed much improvement in what was a decent game of football - the decisive score of the game coming from that Carlow breakaway goal in the second half with Tipperary doing much of the pressing - depressing indeed it was, and Tipperary were unable to get back on terms again despite pressing very hard.

Could they have had a penalty at the very death? Perhaps. But, the harsh reality is that chances had come Tipperary’s way earlier on and were not taken - rectifying this will be a big challenge for Paul Kelly and his management team.

Tipperary are away to Longford next weekend in round 2 and that won’t be an easy place to go. But, The Premier lads should be buoyed by the performance with quite a few debutants getting game-time and acquitting themselves rather well in the process. They will only improve with further minutes on the pitch. But, if Tipperary wish to get out of Division 4 - and that is surely a priority - then they will need to win games on their travels, starting with Longford next weekend. Losing a second

Tipperary will travel to Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon next for the first round of the hurling league against Dublin for what will be a tricky and difficult tie.

Of course, all the games in the hurling league are potentially tricky, especially if coaches are trialling players to see what they are made of. But, Parnell Park has been particularly challenging for Tipperary and has always been a difficult place to get out of with

points intact - a Croker trip would have been far more attractive from a Premier perspective.

The run-out against Limerick last weekend for the Dillon Quirke challenge was useful in one sense with quite a few fringe players getting a run out. Some impressed, others didn’t particularly, and the match will not be referenced as any kind of turning point for either team.

However, there were some noteworthy points to be taken from it nonetheless. John McGrath’s return to form is very welcome indeed from a Tipperary perspective - the Loughmore Castleiney man will be required firing on all cylinders if any success is to accrue in 2024. The forwards created a lot of chances

in the game and while they didn’t execute a lot of those chances, one would have to be reminded that it is still only January and there is plenty of time for sharpening up.

Adam English didn’t miss much for Limerick though - he was as sharp as a tack as was Donncha O’Dalaigh and both men gave the Tipperary rearguard plenty to think about. John Kiely might have been shy a lot of his standout stars, but he has plenty of others in the making judging by Sunday’s clash.

There was a fine attendance for the game and it was an ideal day for families to come along to the stadium and see the Tipperary men in action again. Keeping Dillon Quirke’s name alive amongst the GAA public is very

long jump, with a best jump of 3.75m. In the shot putt, Gerard improved over his three throws, finishing with a third throw of 7.25m. Gerards penultimate event is a strength for him, and he jumped 1.37m on the day, just 3cm short of the jump that earned him a national silver medal last year. Finally, he competed in the 800m with a time of 3.14.42 and a total points of 995 in 12th place.

Well done Gerard.

AI Games, Abbottstown Katie Bergin made a quick return to competition after her super performance of a week previous at National U/23 Championships. Drawn in Heat Two of the six heats and again out in lane six Katie gave what is now becoming her trademark fast start opened a

three to four metre gap and maintained it to the finish from Lauren McCourt Bandon AC, in a new indoor PB of 24.46s., this was the fastest time of all six heats and twenty nine competitors, another win under her belt.

Next up for Katie are the Universities Indoor Championships in Abbotstown on Saturday, 10th.

February and National Senior Championships the following weekend 17th./18th. February.

MOYNE ATHLETIC CLUB National Combined Events Championships.

The club had two u14 athletes travel to the national indoor arena in Abbotstown to participate in the National Combined Events Championship, where the Munster medals would also be decided. This is a challenging competition, where athletes must run, throw and jump in five different events and the club were delighted to be represented by Helen Renehan and Gerard Delaney.

The first event for both athletes was the 60m hurdles where Helen ran a time of 12.35s. She followed this up with a solid shot putt of 6.21m and an excellent clearance at 1.33m PB in the high jump. In the long jump event, she recorded a best of 3.52m. PB. The final

event was the 800m, where Helen toed the line in the first heat, finishing in a time of 3.04.68. This left Helen with a total of 1587 points in 19th place at the end of the competition, and two new PB’s in both the long jump and the high jump. Congratulations Helen on your first pentathlon and I’m sure we’ll see more from this super young athlete in the coming months.

Gerard Delaney, has some experience with this type of event having competed in the 2022 outdoor Munster combined event championships, where he scored 728 points. He also started his day with the 60m hurdles where he clocked a time of 12.19s.

Juvenile Training Session Nenagh Indoor Track Over forty juvenile athletes travelled to Nenagh Indoor Track on Sunday morning last to take part in a training session, sprints middle distance, shot, long jump and relays. it was a great opportunity for athletes and coaches to prepare for upcoming County and Munster Championships. Thanks to Nenagh Olympic for the use of the track and all the parents who had an early start.
