Controversy Engulfs Clonmel as Residents Prepare to Debate N24 Project

Residents of Clonmel and the surrounding areas find themselves embroiled in a heated debate over a proposed project that has sparked both support and opposition. Dubbed by some as an “abomination,” the plan involves widening the inner relief road, commonly known as the bypass, into a multi-lane road that would encircle the entire town.

Opinions on the project are sharply divided. Advocates argue that Clonmel has languished over the past two decades due to a lack of infrastructure, and this presents a golden opportunity to rejuvenate the town. They emphasise the potential long-term benefits, despite acknowledging that some residents will face inconveniences.

One resident boldly states, “You need to support this project and push for it to happen sooner rather than later.”

However, dissenting voices express concern about the impact on the community. The proposed motorway would result in the demolition of numerous homes along its path, The prospect of living next to what essentially amounts to a motorway raises fears of increased noise and pollution.

Fury builds ahead of public meetings Continued from front page Residents have taken their concerns to social media, with one lamenting the potential loss of sports pitches, businesses, and the walk & cycle path along the bypass. The situation has escalated to the point where a meeting at the Talbot Hotel has been scheduled for next Wednesday 24th from 2 to 8 pm, providing an opportunity for the community to learn more about the project and seek clarity.

One resident questions the specifics of the N24 Road project between Waterford and Cahir, raising critical points about safety, road types, and the potential impact on existing infrastructure. There is a call for transparency, with queries about the project manager, road type, local roads used for construction, and potential diversions. Concerns are also raised about the fate of homeowners along the Clonmel Inner Relief Road and the need for clarity on eviction prospects.

As the community gears up for the meeting, the lingering questions underscore the need for more information. Residents seek assurance on safety guidelines, consultation processes, and the overall impact on daily life. With a laundry list of queries ranging from road fatalities and construction details to potential eviction notices, the residents are poised to engage in a crucial dialogue about the future of Clonmel. The meeting at the Talbot Hotel becomes a pivotal moment for residents to voice their concerns, gain insights, and collectively shape the destiny of their town.

The N24 Waterford to Cahir Project is a collaboration between Kilkenny County Council, Tipperary County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), and the Department of Transport (DoT). As part of the National Development Plan 20212030, this initiative focuses on the strategic corridor connecting Limerick and Waterford. The corridor spans through the counties of Limerick, Tipperary, and Kilkenny, covering approximately 116km.

Concept and Feasibility - Phase 1 Overview: - Completion Date: February 2021.

Purpose of Phase 1: - Identify transport problems.

- Establish the need for the project.

- Approach: - Influence from Government Policy and planning policies.

- Define existing problems using quantifiable performance indicators.

- Employ evidence-based analysis of

transport issues.

Phase 2, Options Selection, aims to identify project development constraints and evaluate viable alternatives for the preferred transport solution. This phase started in Q2 2021 and is set to conclude in Q3 2023. During the process, two non-statutory public consultations occurred: one on ‘Constraints’ from May 4 to June 1, 2021, and another on ‘Alternatives and Options’ from May 3 to May 20, 2022. All proposed solutions are undergoing a two-stage comparative assessment based on potential impacts and success in meeting project objectives. The preferred solution is expected to be showcased in Q2 2023.

In phase 3, they aim to refine the chosen Preferred Option from Phase 2 by: 1. Defining land requirements.

2. Assessing environmental impacts and finding solutions to mitigate them.

3.

Creating necessary documentation for the statutory process in Phase 4.

It’s important to note that work on this phase has not started.

Phase 4 begins once Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) approves it. This phase focuses on navigating through the Statutory Processes to make sure the project follows planning, environmental, and other laws.

The current task is to advance the project to complete Phase 4, which focuses on Statutory Processes according to the TII Project Management Guidelines. Notably, Phase 5 (Enabling and Procurement) and Phase 6 (Construction and Implementation) are not part of the current assignment. Progression to Phase 5 is contingent upon approval from An Bord Pleanála (ABP) and subsequent approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Additionally, TII’s approval is necessary before moving on to Phase 6.

Challenges and Concerns: The existing N24 faces challenges such as limited walking and cycling facilities, varying average speeds, traffic volume disparities, and safety issues. Notably, there have been recorded injury collisions, and the road quality is inconsistent, affecting overtaking opportunities.

Public Transport and Accessibility: Public transport, including bus and rail services, faces challenges such as longer journey times compared to cars. Options for improvement include enhancing active travel modes (walking, cycling) and

public transport alternatives.

Options for Improvements: 1. Active Travel (Walking & Cycling): - Enhance cycling networks in towns.

- Improve cyclist and pedestrian facilities.

- Build additional river crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

2. Public Transport: - Increase inter-urban and local bus frequencies.

- Enhance rail services between Limerick and Waterford.

3. Road-Based Options: - Develop road options considering existing infrastructure.

- Explore switches to connect various option corridors.

4. Traffic Management in Towns: - Enhance walking and cycling infrastructure.

- Improve local bus services.

- Rationalize parking.

- Upgrade and install traffic signals prioritizing vulnerable road users.

Do-Nothing and Do-Minimum Options: The Do-Nothing option assumes no additional investment, but it is not considered due to committed schemes. The Do-Minimum option involves maintaining existing infrastructure, including committed schemes.

Public Consultation and Next Phases: Public consultation is vital to gather feedback on potential solutions. The next phases include detailed design and environmental evaluation, aiming to create a road network that is safer, more efficient, and aligns with the needs of the communities

it serves.

Language Simplification: Their teaming up to improve the N24 road from Waterford to Cahir.

This plan, part of a big national development initiative, wants to make the 116km road better for everyone. Their looking for your thoughts on how to do it, focusing on issues like slow traffic, not enough walking/cycling paths, and safety problems.

Right now, their in the phase of choosing the best plan (Options Selection), and they need your input. The next steps involve designing the chosen plan in detail and checking its impact on the environment.

They know there are challenges with the current road, like not enough paths for walking and cycling, speed differences, and safety concerns. They want to fix these issues.

Public transport, like buses and trains, also needs improvement.

Their considering ideas like making it easier to walk or cycle and improving public transport options.

There are different options on the table – making paths for walking and cycling better, improving public transport, or changing the road. Their even looking at ways to manage traffic better in towns.

There are some options like doing nothing (which isn’t really an option because they’ve already committed to some changes) and doing the minimum, which is just keeping things as they are.

Clonmel Lions Club Gear Up to Raise Funds for Barnardos

“Gala Lunch and Concert” Featuring the Clonmel Concert Band Sunday 11th February 2024 Commencing with Drinks Reception at 1.00 pm (Sharp) Venue: The Talbot Hotel, Clonmel Clonmel Lions Club has announced an upcoming fundraising event to support South Tipperary Barnardos. The Club will be hosting a lunch in the Talbot Hotel on February 11th followed by a performance from The Clonmel Concert Band and a raffle on the day. All funds raised will go towards Barnardos, Clonmel.

Joanne O’Gorman Project Leader with Barnardos said ‘ We are so grateful to be the local beneficiaries of such a wonderful event from Clonmel Lions. Last year, we worked with over 250 families and children in South Tipperary. Funds raised by the Lions will go towards creating our sensory garden, furnishings for our new therapeutic building and will help buy resources for the children using the therapeutic space. It also means we will have more space to welcome additional children to the service because childhood

lasts a lifetime.’

“Teal” Countryside and wildlife matters with Rupert Butler Of all the migratory duck that visit during the colder months Teal are probably the most common. They are our smallest duck, but what they lack in size they more that make up for in speed. Although only about half the size of our resident Mallard when disturbed they have the ability to rocket almost vertically for the heavens.

Throughout the winter months these little bundles of energy can be found on most waterways throughout the land, from the smallest of streams to vast estuarine locations. Marlfield lake in Clonmel is home to a couple of hundred during the latter part of the year, many of which can be

seen at the Cahir end of the lake where the perfusion of reeds and rushes is far more to their liking.

As with most of our duck species, and Teal are no different, the male is a riot of colour whereas the female is rather drab by comparison. The male has a fabulous chocolate head with a green band stretching back from the eyeline. Before I get myself into trouble here there is a reason that many of the females in the duck world are rather neutral in appearance. Duck are ground nesters in the main and the females more neutral colouring blends in better with the surrounding foliage, making them far less visible to any

marauding predators.

Although Teal are primarily a migratory species we do have residents that breed locally, albeit in small numbers. Sometimes while out for a ramble in August you will come across a family group on one of our larger watercourses. These are birds which have remained here because normally our first migratory birds will start to appear towards the middle or end of September, depending on the severity of weather patterns on the continent.

They might be small in stature but they these delightful little birds punch far above their weight.

Gardening for Wildlife It’s the time of the year when I start to think about potatoes, and this is one of the most anticipated crops in my household. There is nothing like the taste of a freshly grown home spuds and they are delicious boiled, fried or made into home made chips.

It was with great excitement that the seed potatoes arrived in the post. The variety was an old favourite “British queens. These are the first early potatoes and I have been growing these successfully for many years.

The spuds are spread out in a box in a cool and bright place to sprout or chit. This means that they will grow a small shoot. We have all experienced this at home when we forgot about a potato in the bag or press and it grew long white shoots.

By the end of January the potatoes are ready to be planted and I am lucky that I can use the community polytunnel. This was erected in the community green space around five years ago and is also used for growing flowers for planting out around the village.

As space is precious my potatoes go into very large plastic bins and i place these in the centre of the tunnel. This means that the beds are available for other plants. I made large holes in the bottom of the bins for drainage and fill up a third with wellrotted manure and soil.

I place around five potatoes in each bin and cover with around 10 cm of soil. As the stalks grow, I keep on adding more soil till they reach the top. This means I get lots of smaller potatoes, but they have an excellent flavour.

When the potatoes are ready to harvest, I just empty the bin outside. Early potatoes have many benefits including been harvested before the main blight season occurs.

It is important to keep an eye on the weather as frost can hit the new stalks hard. While they can recover it can set harvesting back by at least a month. When all risk of frost has passed, I lift the bins full of potatoes outside so that they can get the benefit of any showers of rain.

We also sow in big old compost or fertiliser bags, and these produce a nice crop of spuds but avoid clear bags as this will only the sunlight to turn the potatoes green.

I sowed winter potatoes last October in a tunnel with a group I work with. I forget to cover with fleece, and they got a right knock. However nature is resilient and last week we got a small but tasty looking crop. I can’t wait to meet the group next week to see how they got on cooking them.

The over winter onions are far hardier and are growing very well. The tops can be eaten as a winter green and give a freshness to any winter salad. The same with the tops of the garlic and also mustard leaves that give a hit of heat.

Broad beans were also sown, only one to a small pot. From past experience if I sow more one in a pot, the roots tend to twist together making it impossible to separate. These will be planted out in their permanent bed in around a month.

We are sowed a few pots of micro broccoli greens and also scattered some seeds on wet tissue in a plastic container. These are eaten when the plants are only a few inches high, and thankfully gardening is a life long hobby of new learning and tasting.

Great news for Cahir Tidy Towns There was great news last week that we have reached out target of 4 tonnes of drinks cans collected for 2023. This target seemed ambitious but thanks to everyone that gathered cans during the year from near and far. This was a huge effort. This year will be challenging with the new cans rebate but there is still a lot of old cans out there and there will still be street disposals too, so we have agreed with our partners ABP to give it another go in 2024 and so we will be back in the car park on the first Saturday of February 2024.

Apart from those collecting cans or storing and supplying us, we would like to thanks ABP and the team for their support in facilitating recycling and the 4.10 tonne gathers equates to about 280,000 cans by our reckoning. The ‘Drinks Cans

for Trees’ scheme has seen huge improvements in Cahir and 2024 should see a lot more. We are planting for our future and that of the next generation. Well done to all involved.

Now that the Christmas season has passed all the fairy lights on trees or in planters around the town have been stored safely for the next time. With the severe cold and icy weather last week we paused our activities but still the bulbs of daffodils and others flowers are starting to show already and they will be a great sight once they open in the spring.

We focus now on our Annual Cahir Tidy Towns Quiz Night that is set For February 17 in The Shamrock Lounge. This is always a great night and we hope to see everyone there. More details next week.

Tipperary Road Roundabout Daughters of Dun Iascaigh new fundraiser footpath works There has been speculation this week of works at the Tipperary road roundabout and Cllr Andy Moloney has informed us of the good news that as a result of representations to the council, the TII have agreed to extend a pedestrian path around the bend to link up with the bypass.

Moloney said that the loop around the Tipp road and onto the bypass and back via Lisava is very popular route with walkers and runners alike and having to share

The Daughters of Dún Iascaigh latest fundraiser was launched in Cahir House Hotel recently with the ‘Person from History’ fundraiser for Meitheal 21.

The ‘Person from History’ fundraiser will take place on March 3 in Cahir House Hotel and will include lunch and entertainment in Cahir House Hotel. Tickets are €50 (and can be purchased in Cahir House) with all monies raised going to Meitheal 21, Down Syndrome Ireland – Tipperary Branch.

The Meitheal 21 Centre is located in Thurles, where children, teenagers and adults from all around Tipperary – including Cahir and surrounding areas – have access to speech,

play, occupational and dance therapies. Paul Butler, Cahir, and representative from Meitheal 21 described the centre as “vital for our children, teenagers and adults to meet their friends, have fun and feel safe – to enjoy the freedoms others have”.

In a kind gesture the Cahir River Search and Rescue group made a donation to Cahir Christmas Lights last week through Cahir Tidy Towns. The generous donation was presented by Cahir River Search and Rescue members Eileen McLoughlin and David

The first lecture of the 2024 lecture season for Cahir Social and Historical Society was delivered

by Pat Holland and the subject was ‘Castles and Constables: Controlling Tipperary’.

The lecture was very well received by a very interested and interactive audience, who braved the cold on last Thursday night.

the existing carriageway with motorists is very dangerous and an accident waiting to happen.

Cllr Moloney said he would like to thank the Council and the TII for taking this safety matter on board and the pedestrian pathway will make a huge difference to the many that use the loop for exercise and fresh air. Funding for the project was provided by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and this will be a huge asset to all once complete.

Bunscoil Na Cathrach pupils Christmas Market raises funds for Hospice

Bunscoil raises funds for South Tipp Hospice

All the fifth class pupils along with their teachers, Sylvia Sheehan and Yvonne Fahy and Principal Brendan Horan gathered in the Assembly Hall to welcome Breda to the school to accept the proceeds.

Principal Brendan Horan welcomed Breda and thanked the pupils, their teachers, parents and anyone else who donated to the Christmas Market. He commented that it was a hugely enjoyable day for everyone and he hopes the funds raised will go a long way towards making life a better for patients that use South Tipp Hospice.

Breda Ryan said South Tipp Hospice started with one nurse and thanks to the fundraising done by so many people on their behalf including Bunscoil Na Cathrach, they now have 7 nurses caring for patients. Breda said we all know someone who has needed to use South Tipp Hospice at some stage and any funds raised help them immensely. Breda congratulated all the children and teachers and Principal Bredan Horan for their amazing efforts.

Cahir Garda Districts Annual Senior Citizens Party is huge success Cahir Community Gardai were delighted with the support shown for their Annual Senior Citizens Party in Cahir House Hotel last Friday evening. Organising members would like to thank all who attended the social event and say they will do it all again next year.

Cahir Men’s Shed started the entertainment off on the evening while tasty refreshments were served up to all. Many of the party goers took to the dance floor and

then the fantastic Irish dancers from the McGrath School of Dancing followed which everyone enjoyed. Transition Year Students from Coláiste Dun Iascaigh who are members of Cahir Comhaltas performed traditional Irish music afterwards and finally Superintendent Edmund Golden entertained all with popular songs that were enjoyed by all. There was a raffle on the evening and huge amounts of prizes and hampers were won by Senior Citizens and

there were special presentations to the oldest Gentleman and oldest lady at the event too.

Newly arrived to Cahir Garda District was Inspector Noel Barry who was introduced by Garda Philip O’Sullivan on the night.

Inspector Barry then opened the event by welcoming and thanking everyone involved in the Party in any way and wished everyone a lovely evening.

beforehand especially Cahir Garda District members, Coláiste Dún Iascaigh Transition Year Students, members of the Seventh Tipperary Scout Group, Cahir Fire Service, Clonmel Civil Defence & of course the staff of Cahir House Hotel.

This is a big event for Senior Citizens from Cahir and surrounding areas. There is always the best of entertainment and lots of fun to be had on the night and everyone really enjoyed it. Well done to all involved.

Unveiling the Priestly Journey: Understanding Holiness and Celibacy In the realm of priesthood, the question often arises: Do you have to be exceptionally holy to be a priest? Let’s break it down.

“Holy” essentially means set apart, emphasizing a single minded connection with God. In practical terms, this involves nurturing the relationship through prayer and allowing it to influence life decisions. Importantly, everyone is called to be holy; it’s not about priests being holier than others, but about their role in serving and assisting people in their relationship with God. A crucial aspect of this journey is recognizing that relationships, including the one with God, aren’t static they either deepen or fade away. Considering the priesthood?

Well, having the beginnings of a mature relationship with God is key. Just as any relationship requires quality time together, prayer is the essential ingredient in nourishing our connection with the divine. While prayer might pose a challenge, especially in our busy lives, the effort is undoubtedly worthwhile.

In the dialogue of prayer, listening is as crucial as talking. God communicates with us, primarily through Scriptures, speaking to our individual circumstances, not just relaying messages from two thousand years ago. Prayer isn’t confined to understanding; it engages our hearts, motivating us, drawing us closer, and prompting commitments. It’s a way of praying that brings the teachings of the Gospel into our daily experiences.

Now, let’s unravel the mystery behind priests not getting married.

It’s about celibacy a choice not to marry, allowing priests to be free for a distinct commitment to the people they serve. Far from being a lonely path, celibacy is a positive decision, emphasizing the priest’s

connection to the community.

Loneliness is a universal experience, not exclusive to priests, and it’s crucial to differentiate it from being alone.

Priests, like everyone else, come from families, and an integral part of their ministry involves celebrating marriage.

This celebration is central to their ability to minister to young couples and families. Celibacy, far from a mere absence of marriage, carries a sign value it’s a reminder that our ultimate fulfillment extends beyond the confines of this world.

In essence, the priestly journey is a profound exploration of holiness, prayer, and commitment to a different kind of relationship. It’s a story of service, not isolation, and a reminder that, in relinquishing something highly valued, priests exemplify a higher fulfillment that transcends the earthly realm.

Father Michael Toomey’s shares his views on Priesthood and the Divine Journey In the heart of Clonmel, where the whispers of tradition blend with the winds of change, Father Michael Toomey, a parish priest, unveils the profound reflections on priesthood and the calling to serve in a rapidly evolving world.

Father Toomey begins by drawing us into the Gospel narrative of Peter, Andrew, James, and John ordinary fishermen summoned by the Lord to leave everything behind and follow Him. Despite their common origins, these men became instruments of divine wonders, a testament to the transformative power of answering the call.

The journey of discipleship, as highlighted by Father Toomey, was no easy feat. The apostles struggled to grasp the Lord’s teachings, wrestling with

misunderstandings, internal conflicts, and moments of fear.

Yet, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they transformed their lives, spreading the joy of serving Christ to others. This serves as a backdrop to Father Toomey’s contemplation on the vocation to priesthood and religious life.

Father Toomey opens up about his own experiences, expressing a deep sense of fulfillment in his role as a priest. Despite acknowledging the demanding nature of priesthood in today’s bustling world, he reveals the immeasurable joy derived from being called to bring sacraments to those in need, offering solace in moments of grief, and participating in the sacred rites of baptism, Holy Communion, and marriage.

Amidst the joys, Father Toomey acknowledges the challenges within and outside the Church. He reflects on the internal and external bickering, disrespect, and attempts to challenge the faith. Notably, he addresses a past attack by a reporter on the priesthood as a celibate male ‘profession,’ emphasizing the joys and dedication that often go unnoticed.

Father Toomey dives into ongoing debates about women priests and the possibility of priests marrying.

He acknowledges the importance of these discussions during the current Synod but underscores that immediate resolutions may not address the pressing issues faced by priests today. He shares his multifaceted role as Parish Priest and Administrator across three parishes, covering seven churches.

In the middle of calls for radical changes within the Church, Father Toomey recognizes those who prefer to stay in the current model.

He reflects on the perceived negativity surrounding priesthood in the face of modern challenges, emphasizing the importance of support and encouragement over needless bickering.

Father Toomey reveals one of his primary motivations for becoming a priest celebrating Mass. He considers it a profound honor to act in the person of Christ, recreating the offering of His Son at the Last Supper and on the Cross. Despite the challenges and past failures within the Church, Father Toomey remains steadfast in his commitment to serving God’s people.

Acknowledging that priests may err and face challenges, Father Toomey requests understanding and forgiveness. He shares his commitment to working with young people, emphasizing building on the faith and future of the Church. Despite the declining numbers of priests and increased workload, Father Toomey expresses gratitude for the resilience, dedication, and generosity of his fellow priests.

In a heartfelt plea, Father Toomey asks for a simple yet powerful support daily prayers. He appeals for prayers for the physical, spiritual, and mental strength of priests to continue serving and to navigate the changes needed for the Church’s future.

He acknowledges the strains on priests due to declining numbers and increased pastoral challenges.

Father Toomey calls for a special prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. In this pivotal year focusing on those willing to take the ‘Risk for Christ,’ he prays for more young men and women to receive, listen to, and follow the call, allowing the Spirit to work through them.

We Are Still Here Sean Ross Abbey Group Ireland has confirmed that all scans of a portion of land at Sean Ross Abbey have been completed, and the report has been received.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Teresa Collins said: “The group is pleased to note that following the conclusion of ground scans that took place at the beginning of October, the report has now been received from the company who carried out the scans (Precision Utility Management) and its results are being considered.

“According to the Commission of Investigation, the total number of infant deaths having

occurred at Sean Ross Abbey was 1078. Taking this into account, it was not feasible to believe that all burials occurred in the relatively confined space of the Angels’ Plot.

“An area of land adjacent to the Angels’ Plot could be considered a natural extension to that burial site. However, as it was under separate ownership to the Angels’ Plot at the time of the Commission’s investigation, it was excluded from examination at the time.

“That has changed since then, however. So, due to the location of the site, and with the assistance of some local

knowledge, it was deemed an area of interest by people with a knowledge of it.

“After securing permission to examine the site from the owner of Sean Ross Abbey Tony Donlan, and after Deputy Martin Browne approached Minister O’Gorman on a number of occasions about the need for further investigations, we engaged in a process with the Department’s Memorialisation and Historic Burials Unit to secure funding.

“Tipperary County Council convened a working group to assist us in this, and their assistance has been invaluable.

“Approval was eventually given to us, and in October scans finally took place and we can confirm that we have now received the results which show a number of anomalies in separate locations in the site.

“While these are interesting results, the exact nature of these anomalies has yet to be determined and could be due to a number of factors. Because of this, we have submitted the results to the Department for their consideration.

“After the department has had time to consider the results, we will engage with them further to discuss our next course of action.”

Toomey expresses a desire for the resolution of divisions and challenges within the Church with mutual respect and fraternity. He invokes the intercession of Mary, the mother of God and Queen of Ireland, to pray for all priests navigating an ever changing world.

Father Toomey reassures the community of his ongoing commitment to preserving the dignity and sanctity of the Holy Mass and the sacraments. On behalf of all priests, he extends gratitude for the prayers and

support of the faithful.

Managing Workplace Stress: A Win Win for You and Your Boss This week, inspired by my latest book purchase “The 5 Resets – Rewire your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience”, I’d like to share with you some thoughts about workplace stress and how to navigate it. Over the last three decades, the prevalence of work-related stress has surged.

The relentless pursuit of success, coupled with technological advancements like email and Zoom that blur the lines between work and personal life, has contributed to an alarming increase in stress levels.

The challenge for all of us lies not only in identifying these sources of stress but also in knowing how to step back from it when it looks like it will spiral out of control.

A number of recent studies have found that work is the number one cause of stress and it remains one of the highest reasons for workplace absenteeism. The truth is the job you are in has a significant impact, positive and negative, on your mental and physical wellness. And work stress is further complicated by broader sources of stress from relationships, finances, health, and parenting.

Stress Recognising that there’s a problem is the first problem. Not long ago Jacinda Ardern, ex Prime Minister of New Zealand, resigned from the role, announcing that she had “nothing left in the tank”. It was refreshing to hear a public figure speak candidly about overwhelm, and to openly admit that she could no longer offer her best in the role. Anyone can have stress.

Whether you’re a student, a CEO, a supermarket worker, a firefighter or a prime minister, it can happen to you. And importantly, workplace stress is not just about your inability

to cope with stress, it’s often rooted in the structures and expectations of the organisations in which you work.

A little bit of pressure is good for us. It creates forward momentum, productivity, even excitement. On the flipside of the coin, continuous, excessive stress with no letup, leaves us anxious, depleted, disconnected and unable to function normally. Sometimes a job itself can cause stress, sometimes it’s caused by the work environment, or from your reaction to events based on your personality type, history, and coping skills. Sometimes it’s a mix of all the above. Symptoms of stress include feeling out of control, emotional exhaustion, irritability, decreased productivity. You may have issues falling asleep or you fall asleep quickly but wake a few hours later, with very high cortisol levels, and find you’re unable to get back to sleep. By recognizing these stressors, individuals can take proactive steps to manage and mitigate their impact on wellbeing.

As I say, recognising that there’s a problem is the first problem.

Burnout Burnout is different to feeling stressed. Burnout is the result of chronic stress that doesn’t go away, rather than periods of stress associated with pressured times at work. We can tolerate bouts and periods of stress but burnout happens when stress is consistent over a long period.

You may suffer from persistent fatigue, become detached, lose motivation, lose interest in work and withdraw from people around you completely. Burnout happens slowly and this is important. What happens is it can become the norm for you, making it difficult

to recognise that there’s a problem that you should do something about. Today it’s classified as an illness, sharing features with and linked to depression, coronary heart disease, anxiety, increased substance abuse. If you feel you’re suffering burnout, it’s important firstly to seek help from your GP. Can you talk to someone at work?

Does your company have a wellness programme? Check if they offer resources for stress management.

Examining the consequences of chronic stress on physical and mental health prompts an urgent call for attention and action. An analysis of the most searched Google topics about stress in 2023 reveals a growing concern for post-traumatic stress. Employers need to be attuned to these mental health challenges and implement strategies to support their workforce effectively.

In her book “The 5 Resets” Dr Nerurkar, talks about the steps she took to address her own burnout whilst working 80 hour weeks as a doctor. She describes some of her patients’ journeys to better mental health and introduces us to her 5 easy steps/resets. My big takeaway from “The 5 Resets” was the StopBreathe-Be technique. If you start to panic, if your inner critic is shouting harsh things in your head, reset your stress levels like this. Say the word stop out loud. Then pause, and when you’re aware of your stillness, take a deep breath in and say the word Be, out loud on the out-breath. Beeeeeeeeee!

What Organisations Can Do About Work Stress By acknowledging the impact of stress and implementing practical solutions, organisations can collectively work towards a

healthier and more balanced work environment. Leaders play a key role in setting realistic expectations, openly recognising contributions from employees and creating an environment that prioritises mental wellbeing.

I worked in industry for a long time and to be fair to managers, it’s a tough line to walk balancing emotional intelligence with managing staff performance. Leaders have to learn soft yet motivational skills to spot symptoms of stress, deal with stressed and sometimes chronically overwhelmed employees and create an environment that is productive.

No small task. But research from countless studies show that prioritising mental health enhances job satisfaction which in turn boosts productivity and long-term success. A win-win all in.

By implementing the following practical solutions, companies can expect a healthier, more balanced work environment: • Recognise the problem.

• Implement wellness programmes within the organisation.

• Provide management training to help managers spot signs of stress and deal with staff who are in overwhelm.

• Invite speakers to talk to your staff about physical and mental health, managing stress, finding motivation, recognising stress symptoms, balancing home and work life, building resilience.

• Provide resources for staff such as stress management workshops, wellness talks, mental health awareness campaigns and counseling services.

• Foster a culture of openness around stress.

Acknowledge the pervasive issue of

workplace stress.

• If it’s possible, offer flexible working arrangements.

What Individuals Can Do About Work Stress Whilst employers play a pivotal role in creating a workplace that promotes wellbeing, employees must play their part in actively tackling stress.

• Recognise the problem.

Write down your symptoms.

Consider if it’s stress from the normal peaks and troughs associated with working life e.g. end of year exams (teachers) or end of tax year (accountants), or if it’s burnout, associated with chronic, continuous stress that doesn’t go away.

• In the case of burnout, consult your GP, speak to the relevant people within your organisation and seek help from a therapist.

• Examine areas of your work you may not have thought about previously and make notes. What could make your job better? Time management, self care, boundaries, goal setting.

Consider opportunities, work setup, management style, workload, pay, colleagues. What are the organisational needs? Write down reasons for staying and, in worst case scenarios, for leaving. Don’t make rash decisions.

• Speak to someone at work.

• Speak to a career coach to identify work possibilities and explore options vis a vis your personality traits, skills, interests, abilities.

• Find effective time

management tools to help you contain your workload (download the free version of Brendon Bouchard’s High Performance Planner online).

• Rewire your brain!

Remember that what’s good for your body is good for your brain.

Do micro things if you’re stuck for time. Get outside for a 10 minute walk, box breathe in the car before kids come out from school, take 1 minute breaks from your screen throughout the day, calm your inner critic using gratitude. Write down 2 things you’re grateful for every day e.g. I’m grateful I found a parking space. Dr Nerurkar suggests that you aim to make 2 small changes at a time if you want a new routine to stick.

• If you’re desperate, Dr Nerukar suggests that when stressed, ask yourself what could you do for 5 minutes that will make you feel better today?

• Finally Stop:Breathe:Be. It’s easy to get bogged down in what you’re doing and forget the big picture. The air, the sky, the grass, family and friends.

Conclusion A job can give you a sense of purpose and meaning in your life which should never be underestimated. But it’s important for individuals and organisations to be conscious of the stressful side of work that can damage health, and to have resources at the ready to manage stress that may get out of hand. For the majority of people work is a trade off and a lifestyle choice. You may not love it but it’s a means to an end. Make the best of it. You owe it to yourself to actively and assertively engage in managing your work so you live your best life.

Your employer will thank you for it.

Clonmel Concert for Gaza Clonmel Friends of Palestine are presenting a fundraising concert on Sunday the 28th of January at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel, in aid of the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) Having met at various rallies in solidarity with Gaza under the Main Guard in Clonmel over recent months, the group including councillors, local event organisers and members of the Palestinian community set about planning a gig for Gaza in an effort to raise much needed funds for the ongoing medical and humanitarian crises in Gaza.

The event will take place on Sunday the 28th of January from 2pm-7pm. While the background and cause behind the fundraiser is indeed a grave one, the event itself will be a heartfelt family friendly afternoon filled with some of the best of our local musicians and artists. Popcorn, face painting, candyfloss and games will keep children delighted while the adults and audience cheer on the musicians taking to the stage. Food will be available for a small donation and

a raffle on the day will have some lucky people leaving with their hands full of prizes!

The concert starts at 3pm sharp.

Local artists are coming together to put on a gig like no other, with a variety of genres taking to the stage making for a real festival atmosphere. Opening the stage is Cadhla, the music of local man Decky Kiely who’s song New York Taxi has received over 20k streams on Spotify to date.

The concert will flow between singer songwriters including Eve Whelan, electronic music from producer/songwriter Vale, leading into full band sets.

Tipperary Ramblers will add Irish flare to the concert with their mix of folk and trad music while The Benedictine Quartet will keep things ‘unashamedly country’ as they say in their own words. The Wood of O will be performing their original unique style of folk music and will generously be donating all CD sales on the day to The PCRF. Headliners Crow Black Chicken who play one charity event every year have incredibly given this fundraiser

their priority. It will be an event like no other in the ballroom of the Talbot Hotel Clonmel.

Organisers are urging people to attend. All funds raised will go to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. The PCRF provides free medical care to thousands of injured and ill children yearly who lack access to care within the

local health care system, and this would be in a normal year, pre October 7th. The recent attacks have escalated the demand for the

PCRF’s aid to catastrophic levels.

As people’s attention starts to turn away once again from the people of Gaza, Clonmel

Friends of Palestine are urging all of Clonmel’s community to come out in a strong showing of solidarity on January 28th.

Happy New Year to all members of our school community and best wishes for 2024.

2024 has certainly started with a bang with our senior footballers who qualified for the Munster Final after a great win over Ardscoil Na Mara Tramore.

December proved to be a very busy month for our school community.

6th Year SVP Well done to 6C, who ran a very successful Bingo Loco for our 3rd Years last term. They have raised over 450 euro for SVP. Christmas Market Our students also took part in the very successful Clonmel Christmas Market in December.

Well done to all those involved in this initiative.

School Lotto Winners Thanks to everyone who has supported our school Lotto in our drive to fundrase for a new Astro Turf.

Senior Basketball Our senior basketball team travelled to Mallow today to take on Davis College in a qualifier for the All-Ireland quarter final. It was

a case of déjà vu as we made the slower start against a well drilled team who were on their club team’s home court. Mallow took a 7-0 lead before Aedín McCormack got us on the scoreboard. Trailing 12-4, Tanya O’Sullivan, Aedín McCormack and Hazel Brennan brought the score back to 12-10 in a wonderful spell of quality ball from both teams. Mallow started the second quarter leading by 4 points. A great 3 pointer from Lily Browne edged it closer and only a single point separated the teams. Two very different styles of play were evident with Mallow patiently building up plays while we moved the ball a lot faster with some beautiful passing between Sinéad O’Carroll, the lightningquick Hazel Brennan and Aedín McCormack. The third quarter was a really close affair with end to end action. Aedín and Hazel scored two baskets each, but Mallow scored two fabulous 3 pointers to lead by 33-30 entering the final quarter. We narrowed the gap again thanks to Lily Browne to make it 33-32, but another

great Mallow 3 pointer put them 4 points up. The next score would be crucial. We piled on the pressure with Tanya O’Sullivan and Éabha Murphy causing problems for the opposition. Unfortunately, despite good opportunities under the basket, the ball wouldn’t go in and Mallow scored. Aedín kept us in the game at 40-34, but the clock was running down and Davis College had the experience to close out the game 44-34. A few tears were shed as some of our gallant warriors realised that they had played their final basketball game in a Pres singlet. They can be very proud of not only this championship run, but 6 years of wonderful performances. We wish Davis College all the best in the All-Ireland quarterfinals. They are a fine sporting team and deserve to go all the way to the final.

Carol Singing A group of our music students were delighted to perform at Boston Scientific as well as the AIB to spread some Christmas cheer.Thanks to Ms.Keating for organizing both events.

Ty German Christmas Baking Our TY German class recently enjoyed an afternoon baking Christmas cookies while listening to the most popular German Christmas carols. The cookies were delicious. The entire class was conducted in German, so well done to all the students. Fabulous work!

Senior Camogie Huge congratulations to our Senior Camogie team who had a great win against Carrigtwohill CC this month. The girls will now progress to the Munster Semi Final in the New Year.

First Year Camogie Well done to our First years who braved the elements and travelled to Cashel and played a very physical and competitive match.

The girls had a great win in tough conditions.

Advent Prayer Service A beautiful Advent Service was ran by the RE and Music Departments. The theme this year was based on Blessings in our lives.

Students reflected on this in class and brought this into the service

through music, prayer, Gospel readings and their own reflections.

Gymnastics The Ursuline Thurles hosted a competition for Gymnastics this term. Layla Crotty and Alyssa Morrissey won gold and silver in the beginners’ section. Aoife Stafford and Niamh Clarke took bronze and silver in the Intermediate while Emer Brennan took the bronze medal in the advanced section. All the girls performed their routines really well and a great day was had by all involved.

Dreamspace Our Dreamspace Ambassadors Chloe, Michelle and Anjali visited our 2nd Year Coding class today to find out who is on the nice list and who is on the naughty list. The students got to code an intricate program designed by Ambassador Emily which showed them how useful functions are in coding. Congratulations to Cayla and Veronika who were top of the nice list. Hard luck for Orla, who took it well that she ended up on the naughty list. TD Alan Kelly Calls for Social System Overhaul Following Widower’s Supreme Court Victory Tipperary TD Alan Kelly expressed his strong support for widower Johnny O’Meara’s recent Supreme Court victory, stating that this should act as a catalyst for significant change in the social protection system. In light of the court ruling, which granted O’Meara a widower’s pension following the passing of his long-time partner, Kelly emphasized the need to rectify the existing disparities within the system. Kelly highlighted the injustice faced by individuals in cohabiting relationships, pointing out that the current system fails to provide essential support for grieving partners in such situations. He stressed the urgency of evolving the law to acknowledge and provide for the diverse

ways in which families are formed and sustained, calling for immediate action to address this social inequality.

Emphasizing the need for equality and fairness, Kelly underscored that the definition of family has evolved, necessitating a corresponding evolution in laws and regulations. In speaking out for O’Meara and his family, the TD pointed out that the lack of welfare supports for unmarried couples represents a significant societal issue, one that requires prompt and decisive action to ensure equality for all families. Hockey girls record good win over Cork opponents The girls at Tipperary Hockey club had a big win last weekend at Rockwell College when they overcame Cork opponents Belvedere Hockey club on a two goals to one scoreline. They were in great form right from the start and took the lead early in the first half when Grace Hayes set up Eibhleann Flanagan to roll the ball to the Belvedere net. But the Cork side were never going

to go easy and levelled the game early in the second period. This set the game up for an exciting finish, and in the end it was the Cashel girls that struck the decisive goal when Eimear Ryan found the net. From then on it was a disciplined defensive effort to make sure of the win, which was celebrated wildly at the final whistle. Well done to all involved.

Wonderful afternoon of music and laughter at Lions Club senior citizen’s party There was a wonderful afternoon of music, fun and laughter last weekend at the annual Cashel Lions Club Senior Citizens Party.

Banishing the post-Christmas blues, close to 200 senior citizens from all around the town and the surrounding areas, had a fantastic day meeting friends, eating, drinking, singing, dancing, chatting and laughing.

The catering for the party was provided by M.J. Buckley of MJB Catering, and everyone was more than satisfied with the variety and the delicious nature of the food. And then the party goers got a chance to work off the fare, by taking to the dancefloor, where they were entertained by Eddie Golden who made sure the feet were kept tapping right to the end of the day. The other big shout out for making sure the party was possible, was to

the large numbers of volunteers, especially the younger ones, who were on hand all day to make sure the party ran smoothly. They showed that young people can more than rise to the occasion with spirit and ingenuity, and the Lion’s Club were heartfelt in their thanks for them at the end.

The Senior Citizens party, is only one of the many days and outings that the Lions Club provide throughout the year. It is highly anticipated and looked forward to, and is a place where many old friends get to meet up, and maybe see each other for the first time in a long time. Long may the tradition and party continue, and the Lions Club would like to thank those who give generously throughout the year at its various fundraisers. Without donations it could not put on events like this, and they are so badly needed.

Cashel 19 – 13 Old Crescent RFC Round 11 of the All Ireland League brought Old Crescent to Cashel on Saturday, with both clubs were coming off the back of good wins the previous week. The hosts had beaten league leaders Nenagh, and Crescent had a bonus point win over UL/Bohemians. The pitch was solid under foot but the strong wind blowing across the field and the driving rain made it very difficult for the players and very unpleasant for the hardy supporters who turned up.

After early Old Crescent pressure, the home side finally settled and recorded their first score on eleven minutes when Ben Twomey put them ahead with a penalty. It was clear at this stage that whatever team won this contest would have to earn it. Two penalties brought the visitors inside the home twenty two, and they kicked the second to level the game. Cashel were strong in the scrum but were not getting the reward for their efforts and the penalty count was going against them. From a lineout maul midway through the first period they were over the line and were confident that the ball was touched down but the score was not given. Another lineout minutes after saw a maul edge to the line, and despite moving the ball wide at pace, Crescent were able to clear their lines. On thirty four minutes the away side got possession from broken play just inside the Cashel half, and launched a high kick towards the Cashel goal. They ball swirled in the wind and was not secured by the defenders, who saw Jed O’Dwyer pounce and touch down under the posts for a seven pointer which put Crescent ahead. Just before the break, the hosts forced another pen-

alty which Ben Twomey converted to leave the half time score at ten points to six to the visiting team.

As the second half commenced the rain got heavier but it did not impact on the quality of the play. Two minutes in Cashel got an opportunity when Crescent knocked on inside their twenty two. From the scrum Cashel went through the phases, and after setting up a maul from a lineout Cathal Ryan touched down to put Cashel a point ahead. As the game progressed ball handling became more difficult, but Ben Twomey’s kicking was constantly putting the home side on the front foot. They robbed a lineout ten minutes from time and after being awarded another penalty, the trust boot of Twomey put them three more points to the good, with the score now standing at fourteen points to ten. The game was still in the balance and mistakes were also increasing as the difficult conditions made handling very difficult. With five minutes remaining James Ryan broke from a ruck and fed Ed Kelly who made ground and passed to Tom Tobin on the wing. Tobin had work to do but he broke the tackle and scored in the corner. This put Cashel nine points ahead. However Old Crescent had the last word when they were awarded a penalty in a scrum just inside the Cashel half.

With a wonderful kick the ball sailed over the bar and earned them a losing bonus point which they richly deserved, with the game finishing nineteen points to thirteen in favour of the hosts. This was a very hard-fought win for Cashel. Both teams deserve great credit for providing such wonderful entertainment in such poor conditions.

Breda wins Lions Club Person of the Year award for service to local community It was no surprise last Sunday week when Rosegreen native Breda Culleton was announced as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Cashel Lion’s Club, Person of the Year award. The award was presented to Breda at the Lions Club Annual Senior Citizens Party in Halla na Feile, which was attended by a huge turnout of people from all across the Cashel community and beyond. Breda was nominated in recognition of her work in the Rosegreen community and with the St Vincent De Paul. She is a mainstay in her local community, volunteering for decades in the local church of St Thomas the Apostle. She also helps out whenever there is an event of any kind in the local

community hall, where she’s served in many different positions and functions. Breda is now the 38th person to be recognised by Cashel Lions club, and she joins a long and distinguished list. Her contributions to the Rosegreen Players, the Development Association, The Women’s Group, the Church, parents’ association and school boards of management, and the annual field day, are just some of the ways that she has had a positive effect on her local community. Humble as she always is, Breda was delighted to pick up the award, but it won’t be the end of her helping out, as we’re sure she’ll continue working just as hard in any future endeavour that she takes part in.

Huge celebrations at medal ceremony for Cashel’s King Cormac’s young heroes Last Saturday evening, at St John The Baptist Primary School, Cashel King Cormac’s recognised the accomplishments of its underage hurlers and footballers in 2023 before a packed hall of young people, parents, guardians, coaches, volunteers and supporters. The outgoing Juvenile Chairperson Sean O Donoghue opened proceeding by welcoming all everyone in attendance. The gathering began on a solemn moment, with a minute silence was held for those loved ones we sadly lost throughout the year, impressing upon everyone there the importance of remembering all who have contributed to the club in the past.

Seanie then covered many of the standout moments from 2023 whilst also highlighting the important roles played by our club coaches all volunteers giving freely of their time, week in week out. Also, the fantastic support of all the parents during a busy season. It has been a good year for the club, winning many underage tournaments, West finals in hurling and football, competing in county finals, with of course the cherry on the top of the season, the victory last September in the county u13 final, bringing the club its first county honours at the grade for over forty years.

The MC on the night the very capable Stephen Gleeson of Tipp FM Sport, who weaved his vocal magic in taking the crowd through the journeys of the

various age groups highlighting their development and achievements, from the Under 7’s, all the way through to the Under 17s. Stephen was assisted by a coach from each of the age groups who also addressed the packed hall highlighting some of the key moments during the season whilst eagerly looking forward to the year ahead.

But the young players were also introduced to some older players, when Stephen welcomed Eoghan Connolly, Cathal Quinn, Ronan Connolly and Oisin O Donoghue, who are now current members of Tipperary inter county panels, and they offered words of encouragement to all the boys, and each gave some sound advice.

We wish the boys every success in the season ahead in the blue and gold at Senior and Under 20 level.

And then the club provided a special treat to the entire room, with the surprise arrival to the podium of Davy Fitzgerald. While every Tipp man has reason to be wary of Davy, after some of the heartbreak he caused in the past to the “Blue and Gold”, old animosities were put aside to give him a warm and rapturous welcome. The current Waterford Senior hurling manager and star of “Ireland’s Fittest Family” Davy, was full of praise for the players and offered his own words of support before presenting medals to the victorious Under 13 panel, that brought home a county ‘A’ hurling title.

The club also made some presentations

to prominent club members who have given long contributions to the running of the club over the years. Tommy O Meara, our club caretaker, ever present in Leahy Park for many seasons now was recognised, as was Eileen Moloney, for her countless hours of dedication for many years organising Cúl Camps and many other events within the juvenile club. Eoghan Dunne and Brian Manton winners of All Ireland

medals at Under 15 level in 2022 with Tipperary, along with Briain O’Donoghue and Joe Mc Grath who were honoured for their success with the Tipperary Under 17 hurlers in 2023.

One of the highlights of the night came when a poem written Eamon Browne was recited, covering the journey of the Cashel King Cormac’s Under 13’s.

The verses brilliantly captured the essence of that famous

morning in Dundrum, when the boy’s defeated the mighty Kilruane Mc Donaghs in an epic encounter. Former chairperson Aodhan Wrenn also addressed the attendance with some lovely words wishing all teams every success in 2024.

Finally, the club marked the trojan work during a ten-year term as Juvenile Chairperson by Seanie O Donoghue with a lovely presentation, thanking him for

his sterling service during that time and wishing him well as he has now steps into a new role as Chairperson of the senior GAA club. A special mention also to outgoing Runaí Stephen Walsh, for the mighty work he too delivered in his term as secretary and we wish him well as he takes up a position with West Bord Na nÓg. Best wishes also to incoming Juvenile Secretary Aodhan Wrenn and chairperson Brendan Bonnar.

With all the formalities done and dusted there was food and refreshments aplenty with photos and chat to round off a most enjoyable and memorable evening for our Club, as we look forward to many more in the years ahead.

There was a special thanks given to those that helped in any way in organising the medal ceremony.

Also, to those that decorated the hall in the school it looked fantastic, it was much appreciated.

Lastly to Stephen Gleeson, the MC on the night for smoothly guiding the evening along interacting among the players and coaches, with Stephen doing a great job as always. There is no doubt that the local club is on the up and up in recent years. Loic L’Herrou & Annemarie Ryan are hanging up their aprons at The French Quarter Café After nearly 18 years of trading, the French Quarter Café owners, Loic L’Herrou & Annemarie Ryan are hanging up their aprons.

However, the good news is that the café will continue to trade as the French Quarter Café, under the management of the Tipperary Excel Heritage Centre. The muchloved café staff will still be there to meet, greet and serve customers, so it will be business as usual. In a post on social media the couple announced their departure from the business. “After nearly 18 years it is time for me to take some time off and to plan for the next stage in my life. Moving to Tipperary and running the café has been a very big accomplishment. I am very proud of my family, my staff and of what we have

contributed to Tipperary town” said Loic L’Herrou.

His business partner and wife Annmarie Ryan, who is also a Tipperary County Councillor, said that she will be very sad to leave the café.

“It is a huge part of our lives and we have loved every minute of running this family business. However, neither of us has the same energy that we had 18 years ago. I also have other work commitments and it has become increasingly hard to juggle my growing workload” said Annemarie.

Since opening in 2007, The French Quarter Café has become an integral part of the Tipperary Excel Centre.

It is well known and loved for its home baking, good quality affordable food and of course, it’s wonderful hardworking staff. Indeed,

staff member Liz, has been with the café from day one and is the fabulous baker of all the good stuff, such as pavlovas, lemon meringues,cheesecakes, homemade scones and more.

Staff members Magda, Dee and Laura, between them, have over 30 years of service in the FQ Café, and are an integral part of the business and are fully trained and equipped to carry on the high standards of food preparation and delivery for which the French Quarter Cafe is renowned. Claire, Katie & Danielle will also continue to provide the warm and professional service that customers have come to expect. There is an air of shock in Tipperary Town with news of the impending closure of Flanagan’s Lane in the town.

In a post on social media on Thursday January 18th, the proprietors announced the closure of their business. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our business here in Tipperary Town. Hospitality has taken a tremendous hit over the past few months with costs spiralling out of control. Unfortunately we are no different than any other business and we cannot sustain profitability in such an environment.

The immeasurable effort put in by our staff cannot be understated, and for this reason the closure is all the more hurtful. We were not just a cafe and restaurant,

we were a community hub for Tipperary Town, and we want to thank our regular customers who turned up time and time and time again, to support a small local business. Our last day will be Friday 26th January.

Any gift vouchers can be used up until Friday or can be redeemed in our sister restaurant Flanagans on the Lake, Killaloe” said the post. There has been a huge outpouring of sympathy on social with people expressing their sadness at the closure of the business. Cllr. Declan Burgess, Cathaoirleach of the Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District expressed his sorrow at the closure. “I am so sorry to hear this. It’s one of my favourite places to go for lunch when I’m around Tipp Town. Wishing

you all the best in the future” said the Councillor. Similar sentiments were expressed from the proprietors of The French Quarter Café who have announced their retirement from business.

“We are very sorry to hear this, we know how hard this kind of work is, and the blood, sweat, and tears that you have put into it”. There was a real sense of sadness expressed by everyone who commented on the loss of the business to the town and a final comment which summed up many of those feelings, “Great food and great staff, you will be very sadly missed”. We join with everyone in expressing our sadness at the impending closure and wish Niamh and Gary (proprietors), the very best of luck in the future.

Athlete and Aherlow LGFA club member, Stuart Moloney, has completed the ‘100k in a day’ challenge.

Aherlow LGFA and the Irish Wheelchair Association, Tipperary had partnered for this unique fundraising event which entailed Stuart running 4 km every hour for 24 hours (6 km for hour 1 and hour 24 to make up 100 km). A competitive runner since retiring from Gaelic Football in 2010, this was a gruelling challenge by Stuart. The event took place on Saturday January 20th/ Sunday January 21st at the Canon Hayes Sports Complex running track. Speaking immediately after her

completed the challenge Stuart said that he was feeling good but very tired.

He said that he wanted to thank everyone for their support and St. Michael’s AFC who gave him the use of the dressing rooms throughout the night. “I had someone running with me every hour throughout the night and we even went and ran around Tipp town during the night, just to break things up as the track was very messy in places. It was very bad weatherwise in the afternoon/evening but overnight was okay as the winds dropped and it was even mild. I just want to thank everyone for their support” concluded Stuart.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced funding of over €4.5 million to tackle dereliction and vacancy in Rural Ireland. The investment, under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, will see 24 old and derelict buildings repurposed for 21st century community use. Among the projects that will be revamped under the initiative include a former pub, Liz’s bar in Tipperary Town. Under the initiative, funding has been allocated to the local authority to purchase and re-develop the building.

Announcing the details the Minister Humphreys said that she was delighted to announce the welcome an investment of €4.5 million under her Department’s Town and Village Renewal Scheme. “This initiative is all about giving our local communities the tools to address the challenges of vacancy and dereliction in their towns and villages.

Through this funding, we are taking those run-down buildings and turning them into facilities that will benefit

communities for generations to come” said the Minister.

Tipperary town Councillor Annmarie Ryan has been very involved in the project.

“I have a keen interest in vacancy and dereliction and as part of my work with Tipp Town Revitalisation and the CTCHC (Collaborative Town Centre Health Check), I’ve been recording vacant / derelict properties in Tipperary town and surrounds.

One such property is the former Liz’s Bar on Main Street. It’s a beautiful building with huge potential, right in the heart of Tipp town but sadly has fallen into dereliction (except for the section know as Kebab Zone). I set about tracking down the owner of the property as the folio was with a receiver. Anyone who has dealt with receivers know that this is not an easy task, but after a few months and many phone calls/ emails, and a determination not to give up, I found a contact within the finance company who was willing to sell the property. Tipp Town Revitalisation and Tipperary County Council applied for funding under

the Building Acquisition Measure (through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme) and the application was successful, enabling us to purchase the property.

The funding has specific conditions as to the building’s use; it must have a community purpose and it cannot be used for accommodation. There are many ideas that need further exploration. We need more office space (as the Digital Hub is full), we don’t have any bakery in town (perhaps it could it be run as a social enterprise?), Creative Places Tipperary Town needs a home, as do many of the crafters in our midst. The use must be long term and sustainable. Right now we are applying for funding to carry out works to restore the front facade of the building, which contains many beautiful features that need attention. Michael Begley, Tipp Town Revitalisation Project Manager, has worked tirelessly to get this project over the line. The timeline was very tight and it was not an easy building to buy. I’m very grateful to him for his trojan work, and

Thurles Medical Centre expands services with MRI equipment Thurles TD, Deputy Michael Lowry, has welcomed the addition of an MRI machine to the new Primary Care Centre in Mitchel Street, Thurles which he says is now one of the best in the country.

The state-of-the-art facility which has been staffed with a full complement of specialist services delivered by trained, qualified, professionals was described by Deputy Lowry as being a facility, but with one big disadvantage.

“Since the Centre opened, it was obvious that there was one vital piece of modern equipment that was not installed. I am delighted to confirm that the omission has now been rectified and the Centre in Thurles has received an MRI scanning machine. It is installed and currently being commissioned. The MRI equipment will be available to the GPs of the area and also to qualified physiotherapists.

GPs can refer patients with spinal, orthopedic, brain, neurological and sports injuries,” Deputy Lowry said.

Alliance Medical has a lease and service agreement in place and as part of that

agreement, they provide a core team of radiologists who read the scan and report back to the GP’s. Tipperary University Hospital already has a new scanner installed and that will continue to provide the same level of service.

“The Thurles scanner is an expansion and an additional service that will meet local needs and take pressure off Clonmel. The Thurles Medical Centre now has a complete service offering that matches the best in the country,” Deputy Lowry said.

94 new Thurles homes awaiting planning decision The plans which were lodged with Tipperary County Council to build 94 residences on the outskirts of Thurles can have a major impact on the domestic housing market, should the project get the go ahead.

Deanscastle Developments Ltd lodged an application with Tipperary County Council on December 1 for planning permission to build a residential development of 94 dwellings for the Bohernamona Road – a number of other proposals have been submitted in recent years, but the most recent one would appear to have the best chance of succeeding and getting formal approval from the planning section of

the local authority..

The 94 dwellings will consist of seven semi-detached four-bedroom House type A, eleven semi-detached four-bedroom two-storey House Type A1, 21 twostorey semi-detached threebedroom House Type B, and twelve two-storey semidetached three-bedroom House Type B1.

The plans entail twelve twostorey semi-detached threebedroom House Type C, and eight two-storey semidetached three-bedroom House Type C1.

The twelve two-storey three-bedroom House Type D will consist of eight semidetached and four terraced units, while the three twostorey three-bedroom

House Type F will comprise of two semi-detached and one terraced units. Eight one-bedroom own door duplex units will make up House Type DU1, four on the ground floor and four on the first floor.

The site plans for the project which has been broadly welcomed, involves the development of a new cycleway and pedestrian walkway alongside Bohernamona Road, connecting to the recently redeveloped Loughtagalla Park which has been given a real new lease of life thanks to the work of a local committee.

The proposal also provides for the creation of a creche of 475 sqm for

approximately 57 childcare spaces, and there is also an amenity public open space to serve the development, together with the provision of internal access roads and footpaths, car parking spaces and bicycle parking spaces, site lighting, tree planting and earthworks, and connection to the mains foul drainage systems.

This proposed development is a first phase of an overall plan for these lands and the deadline for submissions in relation to the application was last week.

Should the project get the go ahead it was transform the landscape in and around Bohernamona Road, Thurles and while there has been great excitement

at the prospects, there is also a degree of reticence in some quarters as to the impact the development will have on the immediate neighbourhood. However, ninety four new, modern additional houses in the market will certainly help to ease some pressure on the residential market.

Thurles Musical Society is seeking the assistance of patrons for their up-coming show Big Fish which is set to be the most expensive show ever staged by the amateur group.

The show will run in the Premier Hall, Thurles from Tuesday March 19-Saturday March 23rd and rehearsals are in full swing at the present time.

However, already the committee has established

that, due to continuing rising costs, the show will be a most expensive one to produce, especially with more than seventy members taking to the stage this year.

In total there will be more than 120 people involved in total and the Society is determined to bring their usual high standard to the stage for what will be an Irish premiere.

But with high standard, comes cost and with

that in mind the Society is throwing open the invitation to anyone who wishes to become a patron by making a contribution to the coffers. Subscriptions can be given to any member of the committee or handed in to Hickey’s Pharmacy, Liberty Square and marked Thurles Musical Society.

Of course one of the best ways to support the Society is to book tickets and come along to the show.

Booking this year will be online through GR8 Events and the booking office in Bookworm, Liberty Square will also be opened for a time – details of this at a later date.

Seán Keane’s musical voice is unique and his songs encompass a mixture of traditional Irish folk music, blues and country and he is coming to The Source Theatre on Thursday January 25th at 8:00pm.

Seán Keane was born in a small village called Caherlistrane near Tuam, Co. Galway. He grew up in a family of singers and musicians and learned the Sean-nós style of singing from his mother and his aunts.

While his roots are in old Ireland with the Keane family

tradition of Sean-nós singing, his unique voice lends itself beautifully to many different genres and his skill on the flute, whistles and pipes with which he punctuates songs, make his work unforgettable.

Seán’s songs such as ‘Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears’, ‘Galway to Graceland’ and ‘Home Away From Home’ are enduringly popular as is his more recent material like ‘Paint Me A Picture Of Ireland’, ‘Natures Little Symphony’, and ‘One More Hour’. Sean Keane and Ficino Ensemble to play The Source Mill Road footpath – progress expected by year end At a meeting of the Templemore Thurles Municipal District Council this week, Councillor Jim Ryan (Independent) again called for the installation of a new footpath and street lights out the Mill Road and beyond the entrance to Thurles Gaels GAA grounds.

This is a particularly busy road and, as well as

being used extensively by pedestrians out exercising, it is also the direct route to Kickham Park where many juveniles and adults report for training on a number of occasions during every week, thereby adding to the danger element.

Councillor Ryan has raised this issue on numerous occasions in the past but

was happy with the reply he received on this latest occasion.

“I was informed by the roads engineer that they are hoping to make progress on it later this year by submitting a Part 8 application for it. I was delighted with this response as it is a death trap walking along this road,” he said.

Acclaimed chamber group Ficino Ensemble presents a musical odyssey On Thursday February 1st, the acclaimed chamber group Ficino Ensemble presents a musical odyssey, performing rarely heard music by Mozart, McKay and Penderecki. Mozart’s noble and epic Divertimento for String Trio and Irish composer Deirdre McKay’s atmospheric Between will set the stage for the dynamic and evocative Sextet by the late Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki for which the ensemble will be

joined by pianist Finghin Collins.

Formed in 2013, the Ficino Ensemble has been committed to exploring the vast chamber music repertoire and presenting thoughtfully programmed concerts.

The group regularly perform as a string quartet, and the addition of winds and percussion gives the possibility of playing largescale chamber works. The members share a dedicated

approach to contemporary music and have premiered many works. In 2018 they performed a concert with Olwen Fouéré as part of MusicTown in Dublin, which included a performance of Thomas Ades’ Four Quarters and Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 132.

The group have recorded two acclaimed albums, Winter and Folk Songs which are regularly broadcast on WNYC, BBC3, Radio

France and RTE LyricFm. The individual members of Ficino Ensemble are curious and fearless performers, and are at the forefront of the contemporary music scene and members of the National Symphony Orchestra and RTE Concert Orchestra. Fethard Men’s Shed receive welcome boost Fethard Mens Shed would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Mark Tynan, MMT Builders & Son, Fethard, for their generous donation towards Fethard Men’s Shed development plans at Fethard Town Park. The donation is very much appreciated and will make a huge difference in securing a new club house for our members. The committee thank you Mark for your support and your offer of help going forward.

All support and help with this project is gladly welcomed, as this men’s shed is a huge benefit to all our community, that will continue for many years to come.

BALLYMACARBRY: Eamon Wall Ballymacarbry Community Centre Ballymac Bingo – another great night Our third Ballymac Bingo night took place last Friday Jan 19th at the centre. It was a packed hall yet again and everyone really enjoyed the event. Many thanks to our bingo caller Thomas Crotty who did a professional job as always.

All funds being raised by our bingo night are going towards the development of the new playground in Ballymacarbry. Our next Bingo night will be a Valentines special taking place on Friday February 16th so make sure to mark it in you calendars.

Ballymacarbry Playground We are currently working with a number of approved public playground providers to finalize our playground design and of course to secure the best value we can. Once our design is finalized will we place an order at which point a deposit will be sought. For this reason we encourage locals to continue the fantastic donations that have been made to date. Every household in our community should have received our letter with directions on how to donate, but if someone was missed for some reason, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 086 032 8467. We’d like to sincerely thank all those have donated to date. This playground will be a wonderful amenity in the heart of our village for years to come!

born in 1958 and began writing detective/adventure stories in 1970 for his own amusement. In 1977 he made his acting debut in a production of ‘Drama At Inish’ at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

Jimmy wrote his first three-act play, ‘The Maiden Aunt’, in 2000, which premiered in Killala, Co. Mayo. Since then, he has written over 23 three-act comedies, which have been staged all over Ireland, including several plays also staged in the United States.

Fethard GAA Sports Lotto draw results for Tuesday, January 16, 2024, are as follows: the numbers drawn were: 6, 7, 17 and 20. We had no Jackpot winner and two Match 3 winners received €75 each: Paul Fitzgerald and Mary O’Dwyer. One lucky dip winner received €100: Carmel English. DUNDRUM AC NOTES THE NATIONAL MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP This was held in Athlone on Saturday 13th January. John Moore finished 5th in the 3k Over 65 category in a time of 13.26.

TOM WALSH MEMORIAL 10K RUN & 5K WALK This was held in Caherconlish

on Sunday 14th January. It was a lovely day, and ideal running conditions for it. We had 4 from the club take part in this popular race. First home for the club was Dymphna Ryan, and was 2nd Lady in a time of 35.34.

Next was Tommy Byrnes 43.17, Emily Leahy 45.51 and Denise Compton 46.44 and Denise was 2nd woman in the Over 50 category.

IRMA CORRIN HILL TRAIL RACE. This was held in Corrin Hill, Fermoy Co. Cork on Sunday 14th January. The weather was

ideal, a nice dry bright day and good underfoot conditions. It was an extremely challenging course where athletes had to run up to Corrin Hill three times in various directions. We had senior athletes take part in the 9.2km trail and three juveniles take part in the kid’s race. First home from the club was Barry Hartnett. He had a superb performance to finish 3rd Male overall in a time of 44.34. Next we had Jimmy Halley 56.30, Michael Ryan 1.03, Karen Coughlan 1.03, & Liam Butler 1.15. In the Juvenile race Micheal Ryan, Shona Ryan &

Isobel Hartnett ran in the 5k while Isla Ryan ran in the 1k race.

Katie Bergin’s three in row 60m, and Double Champion The National Junior & U/23 Indoor Track & Field championships were held in Athlone on Saturday last. Those championships showcase the best of underage athletes from the four corners of Ireland, on a weekend when four National Records were set. Moyne’s Katie Bergin was setting about defending the 60m and 200m titles won in 2023 and aiming to complete the three in a row National Indoor 60m victories first won in 2022. It was an early start for all concerned as the first 60m heat was timed for 10am. Lined up in lane 6 Katie led from gun to finish to record the fastest time 7.67s of both heats, the final was timed for 12.55. Competing in finals is now a regular occurrance, but still the nerves are part and parcel of competing in finals. Again in lane 6 Katie powered out of

the blocks established an early advantage during the drive phase and secured her three in a row 60m National Titles in a new PB of 7.62seconds, with Aisling Kelly UCD AC second and Hannah Aspell of Celbridge AC third.

Attention now turned to the 200m, with the first heat timed for just over an hour, again drawn in heat one of the three heats, with only the winner of each heat to qualify for the final. Katie set out her stall early on and crossed the line in first place to take one of the automatic qualifying places.

Two and a half hour break to the final at 5pm is all about managing the time to be in prime shape for the final, again out in lane six Katie stormed out of the blocks, set out her stall down the back straight to gain a slight advantage over Emma Guion Lagan Valley AC Belfast and Caoimhe Cronin

Kildare. Coming off the last bend Katie extended her lead to win by .43second from the afore mentioned Emma and Caoimhe.

The double double completed its a remarkable achievement for this young Galmoy lady, she is now the proud holder of six U/23 National Titles and one National Senior 200m title. Its a quick turn around as next weekend Katie heads to The AI Games in Abbottstown where the best of Ireland and many UK athletes will take part.

Combined Events; On Sunday next Jan. 28th Helen Renehan and Gerard Delaney will represent the club at the National Juvenile Combined Events in Abbotstown, Dublin. Another two of our dedicated young athletes taking on some of Ireland’s emerging talent. Best of luck to Helen and Gerard.

Tipperary Social Democrats statement on recent protests

60m Final - Katie Bergin, Moyne AC crosses the line to win the 60m U/23 National Title for the third year in a row.

People should not direct their frustrations with government policy failures at asylum seekers, according to the Tipperary Social Democrats.

Alan Moynihan, the Social Democrats Local Elections candidate in Cahir, said: “Roscrea does need increased services and infrastructure but vulnerable people seeking asylum are not to blame for that. The government must be held accountable for those deficiencies.

“Helping those fleeing the war in Ukraine, and international protection applicants, is a

good thing and we should be immensely proud of the assistance our communities provide.

“If we were ever in a similar situation, we would hope that other countries would do the same for us and provide protection in a dignified and respectful manner.”

“I was very disturbed by some of the recent protests, particularly where young children were exposed to threatening scenes and I would hope they would not be repeated.”

Brian Hurley, a North Tipperary member of the branch, challenged some of the local representatives

to provide data to support statements being made at these protests.

He said: “Many of the fears being stoked at these protests have no evidence to back them. It is purely an attempt to elicit an emotive reaction.

“People need to ask themselves what they’re really frustrated with?

“Is it people coming into the country or is it the failure of the system to absorb a relatively small increase in population?

“If it’s the latter, then that frustration should be pointed towards Government not vulnerable adults and children.”

A very impressive performance from Clonmel Celtic saw them take their place in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup following a two-goal win against Malahide Utd on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. With a strong wind at their backs Celtic started the game on the front foot and came close on six minutes after a fine move involving Philly Drohan and Peter O’Dowd culminated with Graham Kelly flashing a shot inches wide from the edge of the box. Kelly was very prominent in the early stages and he came close again a minute later with an almost identical effort. This time a Peter O’Dowd centre fell invitingly at his feet but he shot flew inches past the opposite post. Having

Saints booked their place in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup with a comprehensive win at Dublin Port Stadium against Hardwick FC, where a strong last quarter paved the way for the victory.

The Dublin side started well and were ahead in the seventh minute when Adam Hanney found space at the edge of the area and his left foot shot nestled in the corner of the net. But they were only ahead for six minutes as the TSDL side came roaring back and levelled matters when Russell Quirke freed Jimmy Carr who was deemed to have been fouled by a defender, before coolly slotting

The Clonmel side had put in a huge effort at this stage and the heavy conditions saw them tire as Malahide began to have more of the ball as they tried to find a way back into the tie. Murtagh tried his luck from a free just after the hour mark but Fabian Kerton gathered his effort comfortably.

Munster Youth Cup Cashel Town Midleton

Cashel advanced to the last eight of the Munster Youth Cup with a well-deserved win over the reigning champions Midleton of Cork in very difficult conditions at Dixie Currivan Park in Cashel on Saturday afternoon. The home side began the match playing into the strong wind and started really, being on top from the early exchanges and finally hitting the front in the seventeenth minute when a ball was fired across the edge of the area and in an attempt to clear it, was hooked

into his own net by a Midleton defender. They doubled the lead ten minutes later when the visitors failed to clear a corner and after several ricochets ended up at the feet of Pawel Zakowicz who finished confidently to the corner of the net. After this the home side dominated proceedings in the middle of the pitch, but were unable to add to their tally before the half time break. The Cork side came out firing in the second period, but were rocked back shortly before the hour mark when their defence was caught out by a fantastic pass from Sami Laaksonen who put Callum Butler away. These two teams played out a thrilling four all draw on Saturday afternoon in testing conditions at the Ormond Stores pitch in Kilsheelan. The home side started well and found themselves in front after eighteen minutes when Daniel Condon netted after picking up possession deep inside the opposition penalty area and neatly finishing past the keeper.

They extended that lead to two just after the half hour mark when a long kick out from the keeper was

misjudged by a Borris defender, and deflected over his own keeper into an empty net. And they found a third six minutes into the second-half when Darren Kirwan found Brandon Landers with an inch perfect through-ball, and Landers made no mistake with the finish finding the bottom-right corner. The game looked up at this point for the visitors but they fired two quick goals in the next five minutes to put the tie back into the melting pot. Fifteen minutes from time the turnaround was complete when they added a third thanks to a long distance effort into the top corner of the goal,

and to make matters worse, the hosts were reduced to ten men for the remainder of the game.

Eight minutes from time, all the early good work was undone for the home side when Borris took the lead for the first time in the game, thanks to a penalty the was fired to the opposite side of the home keeper and into the net. But the home side kept battling and deservedly found an equaliser in the final minute when Anthony Boyle fired home after a goal mouth scramble from a Gus Nolan free-kick, to put the gloss on what was an excellent game for the watching supporters.

Ursuline claim back to back senior titles Ursuline Thurles 1-11 Presentation Thurles 0-11 Ursuline Thurles are back to back Munster Senior A champions after a 3 point win over neighbouring school Presentation Thurles in Littleton on Saturday. Ursuline started the sharper of the two teams with three points in quick succession from Caoimhe Stakelum and the impressive Sarah Corcoran (2). It meant Presentation were always chasing the game and when Caoimhe Stakelum got the crucial only goal of the game in the 46th minute it proved to be the difference between the two sides despite some great battling quality from the opposition. Presentation got into the game with scores from Kate Ralph and Lucy O’Brien before Thurles Sarsfield’s Lucy Purcell pointed to keep Ursuline’s lead intact. The first half was a great tussle between two sides who were so familiar with each other as club teammates and opponents and the large crowd were treated to some great entertainment. Ursuline’s Caoimhe Stakelum added a point from play while not deterred Lucy O’Brien scored the next point for Presentation. Some fine link up play from the Ursuline players saw Lucy Purcell and Ava Bevans

score a point each. Presentation was awarded a free which Rachel Ralph put over the bar. Seconds later the ref brought the first half to a finish with a scoreline of Presentation 0-05, Ursuline 0-07.

After the restart Rachel Ralph and Caoimhe Stakelum exchanged points before Kate Ferncombe won possession after a lovely pass from Stakelum to slot the ball over for her first score of the game bar. Moycarkey Borris and Presentation keeper Molly O’Dwyer played her part in the second half, following up a pointed free with a great save and clearance from Lucy Purcell. The game was in the melting pot when a long ball from midfield landed sweetly into the hands of Caoimhe Stakelum who had lifted off the ground at the perfect moment to catch the ball and with lightning speed Caoimhe charged towards the goal. She was going for nothing else and was justly rewarded when the ball shook the back of the net giving Molly O’Dwyer no chance.

Presentation can take a lot of pride in their performance especially without key player Eva Ralph who was suspended. Best for them was Molly O’Dwyer, Caitlin Shelly, Kate Ralph and Lucy O’Brien. Ursuline were fully deserving off their victory and will now face Presentation Athenry in the All-Ireland semi-final at home on Saturday the 27th. Paula Quirke was excellent throughout in defence while Sarah Corcoran stood out in midfield. Up front the Sarsfield’s duo of Caoimhe Stakelum and Lucy Purcell finished with 1-05 between them and were a constant threat.

FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB County Tipperary Cross Country Championships.

The last event of the Tipperary County XC Championships took place on Sunday 21st January, we are grateful to landowners Fintan, Louis and the extended Rice family for the use of their land for this event. An open invitation to the clubs to try out this cross country course a few weeks beforehand exemplifies the goodwill, respect and commitment from Fethard AC members, and committee to our extended running community and running friends. Fintan and Louis were delighted to pay it back for all the support and encouragement Fethard AC has received from various clubs and The Tipperary County Board since the club has revived and rejuvenated. I have not seen a more scenic xc course before with a mixture of everything, great credit must also go to our chairman John Hurley for the trojan work that went on behind the scenes. Louis Rice was our race director for the event and he did sterling work which made this a truly club-community event with

all hands on deck from, mapping out the course to the preparations for the day. Our club members and volunteers were not lacking in providing refreshments for after the event. Great to see so many of our younger and newer members who came along to support, volunteer and have the chat, which really made for a terrific atmosphere. With storm Isha looming the cup of tea and various treats afterwards went down very well and this was very much appreciated by the competitors, supporters and volunteers of the Tipperary County Board.

We had 21 athletes go to the line for Fethard A.C. They braved storm Isha’s winds and with an excellently contested race of over 90 athletes, athletics was the winner. Our U/23 Women’s team of Alison Connolly, Carrie Davey and Isobel Maher all making their club debuts did not disappoint us, they brought an infectious energy to the field enough to wipe out any storm. These 3 athletes won their 1st county team medals on their club debuts making it a very proud day for their families.

Our Master Women’s O/45 Team of Aine Doocey, Siobhan Maher & Mary Hurley ran fantastically and finished in the bronze medal positions, making more club history. Siobhan Maher not to be outdone by her daughter Isobel in the medal stakes placed 2nd O/55 securing her 1st individual and team county medals. This is remarkable as Siobhan has been nursing an injury for a few months, showing real determination to get going again. We are delighted for Siobhan. James Maher was our 1st man home in 7th place, Fintan Rice 9th , John Hurley 32nd, Liam O’Sullivan 33rd, M.J.Croke 35th, Kevin O’Meara 37th, Billy Prout 38th & Victor Direen in 40th place.

Our Team Standings: 0/35 men James Maher, Liam O’ Sullivan, M.J .Croke & Kevin O’Meara combined to win bronze medals.

0/50 men Fintan Rice, John Hurley & Billy Prout combined to secure silver medals. Individual Medals were won by James Maher who powered home to take 3rd in the over 0/40 and Fintan Rice had a fantastic bronze Medal in a highly competitive over 55 race.

A huge thanks to our coach’s John, Lorraine, & Fintan for truly making it a team effort , it has been a super day for the club and here’s to many more wonderful days in 2024. To all our club members who represented us today thank you, you made us very proud.

We are always grateful to our First Responders and Tipperary Water for the donation of water for the athletes.

In the O/65 4k men’s race we had three from the club compete. I’m 5th place was Liam Butler, 6th place John Moore and Pj Holmes was 7th place.

IMRA GLENGARRA WOODS RACE The IMRA Glengarra Woods Race was held in Glengarra on Sunday 21st January. It was a very windy day and a race of two halves. The first half was all uphill with climbs of 194mt, then a mixture of fire roads and soft single marsh trail near the finish. We had one senior athlete and one Juvenile from the club compete.

Darren Grayson placed 8th in the 7.3km distance while his daughter Ella was 3rd in the short course of 3k.

DUNDRUM ATHLETIC CLUB COUNTY MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP The County Masters Cross Country Championship was held in Fethard on Sunday 22nd January. We would like to thank the Rice Family and Fethard A/C for hosting and providing a New Cross country course and for the fantastic hospitality they provided.

It was a wet and very windy day with a lot of headwinds, these were very tough running conditions for athletes as it was muddy underfoot also.

We had 18 athletes compete. In the women’s 4k race we had 8 women.

First home for the club and overall winner of the race was Dymphna Ryan (1st O/40). She was followed

by Linda Grogan (2nd O/40) and finishing on the podium in 2nd place. Next was Catherine Fogarty

in 5th place and 1st in O/45. 11th Karen Coughlan 7th O/40.15th Mary Keane and 2nd place in O/35. 18th Emily Leahy, 11 O/40.

19th Mairead Julian and 3rd in the O/45 and 25th Denise Compton, who was 1st in the O/55 category.

Dymphna, Linda & Karen secured Gold in the O/35 category, while in the 0/45 team Catherine, Mairead & Denise won Silver.

In the Men’s 7k race we had 8 compete. First home for the club and making a well-deserved debut on the podium was Barry Hartnett, 1s O/40.he was followed

Tipperary Darts hoping to repeat the brilliant form of 2023 Prior to the 2023 County Season Tipperary Men’s appointed a New manager Mick O Connell . Trials were arranged at short notice so its a credit to Mick and his selectors that funds were raised and a team was organised to represent Tipperary at the All-Irelands in Trim County Meath.

In February at the Inter Counties Tipperary had Offaly and Cavan in the group and nerves got the better of some of the new players and it didn’t go well. On Sunday the atmosphere among the team was excellent and Tipp Men’s played in the Inter Countys Shield.

We drew the previous years All Ireland Champions, Mayo, who ended up in the Shield after a Poor defence of their crown so we knew we needed something special.

A 7-2 win gave us a fantastic boost and momentum grew. A great game with Sligo went to the wire and Danny O’Brien held his nerve to take the last game for a 7-6 win.

A semi-final with Louth awaited us and a superb team display saw us win 7-3 and after a poor Saturday this was turning into something special just 24 hours later.

We played local Munster Rivals Clare in the final and the momentum that started against Mayo drove us to a fantastic 7-2 win against Clare to secure a fantastic Inter Counties Shield victory .

This drew the attention of local business man John Bourke who owns the Cycologist Cycling Business in Clonmel and he very generously offered to sponsor a full set of shirts for all County Teams Men’s Ladies and Youths for the 2024 Season. We are extremely grateful to John for this fantastic sponsorship .

Preparations for the 2024 season began a lot earlier and trials took place from June which gave us far better time to get teams ready for the upcoming events.

In October we went to Longcourt Hotel for the annual Limerick Invitational. Once again we started slow in our Group and ended up in the Shield . And lightning did strike twice as we were successful in taking the victory .

Once again it was Clare who stood in our way and we were emphatic in our performance with

a dominant 7-1 victory .

Our Ladies also had a fantastic Day and claimed victory in the Main Competition with victory over the Mayo Ladies 4-3 which made it a glorious day for Tipperary darts.

Just last weekend our Youth teams went to Longcourt Hotel Limerick for the 2024 Munster Youths Championships and had two teams. Our B team finished 2nd and had a play off to reach the semi finals . They won and played Limerick in the semi finals.

Unfortunately the run was ended

by Limerick.

The A team captained by Irish International Aidan O’Hara and one of the favourites topped the group and drew the other favourite in Cork A. Tipp A got off to a flying start with Aidan defeating Corks top player Callum Coade in the best game of the event . Clonmel player Jack Prendergast made it 2-0 and Jack Lenihan sealed Tipp’s place in the final . Tipp were red hot favourites now and they made no mistake by clinching the Munster Youths Championship for the 3rd

time, a fantastic achievement for manager Mike Smith and all his management team .

On the youths scene in 2023 it was a terrific year for two Clonmel Youths who Represented Ireland at the Europe Cup in Austria .

Aidan O’Hara brought back Bronze in the Boys Pairs and Ina Byrne brought back Bronze in the Girls Pairs. Both players were inspired by Clonmel’s Keanen Norris who represented Ireland brilliantly in Hungary the previous year.

Ina also represented Ireland in Denmark in September and brought back Bronze in the girls Pairs and a Silver Medal for overall Team performance which is a fantastic achievement.

Also, in a couple of weeks, Tipperary Ladies County Player Ingrid Houben will represent Ireland in the Islands International Tournament in the Isle of Man and all at Tipperary Darts want to wish her the best of luck on a great achievement.

Things look good for the 2024 season with the achievements from the Tipp men’s ladies and youths

in 2023/2024 hopefully inspiring the teams to more success so let’s wish Mick O’Connell, Martina

Maher and Mike Smith and all the teams the very best of luck for the upcoming season.
