THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU”

LIFELINES

“We are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the ‘culture of death’ and the ‘culture of life’. We find ourselves not only ‘faced with’ but necessarily ‘in the midst of’ this conflict: we are all involved and we all share in it, with the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life” (The Gospel of Life 28).

Deacon’s NOTE

The blind man not only receives his sight, but the courage to acknowledge what Jesus has done for him. “I am.” When the Pharisees argue with him about how Jesus is a sinner breaking the law by healing on the Sabbath, he fearlessly replied, “He is a prophet”. Finally when he is driven out of the temple and Jesus goes looking for him, we hear him say, “I do believe, Lord.” He now sees with the eyes of faith as well.

Do I ever consider in what ways I am blind? ‘Lord that I may see’. Have I ever been ‘driven out’ for what I believe?

God Bless. Deacon Ron Maida

2024 REGULATIONS FOR LENT

All faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are reminded of Diocesan Statute No. 41 which addresses the penitential aspect of Lent: “The season of Lent is penitential in nature and during Lent penance should be not only internal & individual, but also external & social Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 5, 109). Pastors are obliged to avoid scheduling activities in the parishes which in any way could possibly detract from the external and social penance required by Lent.”

During Lent the following fast and abstinence regulations are observed:

• Good Friday, March 29th, is a day of fast and abstinence.

• Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.

• All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Good Friday and on all Fridays during Lent.

• All Catholics over 18 years of age to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal and two smaller meals unless dispensed or excused.

LENTEN REMINDERS

Lent is a time for sacrifice and for spiritual renewal as we reflect upon our baptism and the call given to each of us to walk as disciples of the Lord. We are provided with three personal challenges associated with our individual observance of Lent:

• Almsgiving – generously giving to those in need

• Fasting – practicing self-discipline and self-denial

• Prayer – reading, hearing and reflecting on the Word of God

?

• By “giving up” things you hunger after, such as sweets or alcohol; or activities you desire, such as vacations, concerts or movies.

• By “doing” things to help others, such as offering an extra donation to the poor or helping those in need by providing food or clothing.

• By “adding” to our normal routine, such as going to daily Mass, praying the Stations of the Cross and going to confession.

Lent continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 28th.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

INCREASING DISASTERS, INCREASING RESILIENCE

—Located in Southeast Asia between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Indonesia has beautiful beaches, diverse cultures and the world’s fourth largest population. Many of the country’s more than 17,000 islands are in the Ring of Fire, where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common. Climate-related disasters such as cyclones are also becoming more frequent and destructive. Find out how with the support of Catholic Relief Services and generous communities like yours Evita and her disaster preparedness group are working to keep their community safe. Visit crsricebowl.org to read this week’s Story of Hope.

The Rice Bowl Collection is the second collection on Holy Thursday. You can place your envelopes in the collection any time during Lent.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

It has never been easy to be a Christian in the Holy Land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, Christians are experiencing unique hardships. We have an opportunity to help them through the Pontifical Good Friday Collection. Christians in the Holy Land face special challenges – many of which we hear about in the daily news. The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The war left deep wounds that will take time to heal. Many Christians (for example, 90% in Bethlehem) depend on the pilgrimage industry to live. They could not work during the pandemic, and the war stopped again pilgrims from coming. Supporting the Collection offers hope to the Holy Land Christians.

Our collection on Good Friday will be the Pontifical Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. You can also place your envelopes in the collection at any time during Lent.

ANNUAL CHRISM MASS

All the faithful of the Diocese are invited to attend the annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, 315 Wyoming Ave. Scranton, on Tuesday, March 26th, at 4:00PM. At this Mass, priests from throughout the Diocese will renew their priestly promises before the Bishop, and the oils to be used for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Holy Orders will be blessed. Participation in the Chrism Mass is a beautiful way to pray for & support our priests and to express our unity as the Diocese of Scranton. For reserved seating, please contact the Office for Parish Life at 570-207-2213 or email oplgeneral@dioceseofscranton.org.
