Candor Historical Society Participates in Fall Festival
Painting of the lower dam by Kay Stash by Carol A. Henry Due to the renovations at the Candor History Center, there will be no open house this year during Candor’s Fall Festival. However there are two events that are scheduled to take place that you won’t want to miss. The first is the raffle drawing for the landscape painting of the lower dam, by Kay Stash, and the other is the annual Cemetery Walk with Phil Jordan. Candor Historical Society will hold their drawing for the Landscape painting by Local artist Kay Stash, on Saturday, October 8, at noon during the Woodcarver’s Show at the Candor Fire hall. Tickets are available now by calling or texting Patti Reichert at 607-760-7551. Local artist Kay Stash has generously donated a new landscape mat finished painting (18 x 24 inches) of Candor’s Lower Dam that many will remember as the ‘ole swimming hole’ in the 1950s and 1960s. The site was the scene of many crowds picnicking and swimming, especially on hot summer days. This particular painting was given to the Can-

dor Historical Society in memory of Rosie Kenish Olmstead, a local mom who shared her dedication to children in securing the local swimming hole as a safe and comfortable place for children to swim. Each summer she would go door-to-door and collect quarters to buy sand for the beach and necessary repairs to the wooden dam. Her earnest and steadfast desire was to make sure all children could swim. On Sunday, October 9, at 1:00 p.m., Phil Jordan will once again be on hand to present his ever popular walk through Maple Grove Cemetery. This is a narrated, guided tour that is always an upbeat event you won’t want to miss. Phil will highlight many of his memories of various locals that are now interned there. Meet at the Flag Pole and make sure you have on your walking shoes. Attendance at these events are free and open to the public. For more information on this and other Candor Historical Society events, contact President Nancy Riggs at 607-759-4001 and visit www.candorhistoricalsociety.weebly.com

18th Season for Newark Valley “MAiZE”
This year’s corn maze at Stoughton Farm in Newark Valley challenges the senses with its vast 8+ acres of pathways, turning points and dead ends. This year, Stoughton’s designer has pillaged and plundered to create a pirate design to challenge the adventurous with twists and turns for all to enjoy. The Stoughton family, in partnership with maze designer Brett Herbst – the world’s leading designer of 3000+ corn mazes -- hope to give even more people a chance to experience the unique source of good farmin’ fun in their newly-designed maze. While the correct pathways can be walked in under 30 minutes, most directionally-challenged visitors – adults and children alike -will require about one to two hours to travel through. The popular Newark Valley maze drew thousands of visitors last fall. Part of an increasingly popular “agritainment” trend, it will be joined this year by more than 265 “MAiZE” sites in U.S., Canada, Poland, and the UK. The maze opened in September and continues through Monday, Oc-
tober 31. The maze will be closed on Mondays in October, with the exception of Columbus Day and Halloween. Hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday-Thursday, 9:00 am to 10:00 pm on Friday and Saturday for a nighttime flashlight maze (last admission 9:00 pm), and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. The last admission is 1 hour before closing. Group reservations are available at any time and school field trips are available during regular school hours by reservation. The MAiZE is located at 10898 State Route 38 in Newark Valley. Cost is $11.00 for ages 10 and up, $7.00 for ages 4-9, and free for kids 3 and under. Maze admission discounts are available for groups and field trips of fifteen or more people. Stoughton Farm offers combination passes, which give maze goers unlimited fun with not only the maze, but the Cow Train, Hay Ride, and Jumping Pillow.
