Owego Little League has won a bid to host the New York State 10U Little League Championship for the next three years. The premier tournament for players 10 years of age and under will bring top Little League teams and talent from around the state to the Village of Owego. Owego Little League submitted a competitive package to its parent state organization for consideration. The winning proposal includes 15 championship games that will be played this year in Owego from July 20 through July 27. The overall winner of the tournament will advance to the East Regional Invitational Tournament facing other high caliber baseball teams from other states. Founded in 1952, Owego Little League has provided baseball and now softball to area youth free of cost for 67 continuous years. Located at Hyde Park on George Street in the “Flats Community” of the Village of Owego, improvements to the league site continue which allowed Owego the opportunity to host

the 10U Championship. Hyde Park now consists of five fully enclosed fields plus the Teener field on the Owego Free Academy grounds, new dugouts, field house, two storage buildings, batting cage, tee cage, a pitching complex, and two pavilions, and is the envy of all who visit here. The strong community support over the years has given Owego Little League an outstanding program for the youth of the community.

NO JOB TOO SMALL A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 17 at the Baker Fireman’s Fountain in the Court House Square in Owego. Members of the Owego Hose Team, local officials, and supporters were on hand as site work for the fountain restoration resumes. Hose team members also received a $5,000 contribution for the project from the Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. “I’ve been very impressed with the hose team for taking this important project on and bringing it to conclusion,” said Eric Nichols, an Allstate agent who submitted the grant request for consideration. “Allstate is very proud to be part of this historic undertaking.” Other Allstate agents supporting the funding re-

quest were Charles Hammond, Aaron Lounsbury, Benedict Diaz, Ernest Landers, Gary Stoneberg, and Jon Taylor. Work on the Baker Fireman’s Fountain site in the Courthouse Square has resumed. The hose team anticipates the project’s completion in early summer barring any unforeseen issues. Fundraising for the project continues with the Owego Hose Team Memorial Golf Tournament set for June 1, 2019, at Tioga Golf Club. Registration and sponsorships are available at www.OwegoHoseTeams.com. Memorial bricks continue to be sold and can be purchased on the hose team website as well.

948 State Route 17c, Owego, NY • 607- 687- 3663 A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on April 26 at Owego’s Parkview Inn and Dugan House Restaurant & Pub. Located in the heart of historic downtown Owego, the property is the oldest continually operated business in the village since 1867. Owners Beth and Mark Johnson have been renovating the hotel since 2011 when the property was purchased. They were able to expedite the renovation with the NYS Downtown Historic Anchor Grant. “It has been a dream come true to renovate this great landmark property,” said

Beth Johnson. The 1900’s-themed hotel features nine hotel rooms and five studios. Each room showcases its own finely detailed flair, and visitors will find that the character of the era has been meticulously duplicated featuring glimpses of exposed brick, elegant furnishings and restored and repurposed wood from the original hotel. The property is fully handicapped accessible with an elevator to all levels. The Parkview Inn is a historic treasure and the entire property is also listed on the Haunted History Trail.

The Home Textile Tool Museum, a jewel of a museum in a beautiful rural setting, offers much to learn and experience for all ages. Have you ever wanted to learn about spinning, weaving or all the stages of processing fibers into cloth? Have you ever seen a sheep being sheared? Would you like to make soap? Cheese? Or make baskets from pine needles? All of these and more basic and advanced homesteading skills will be demonstrated and taught this summer at the Home Textile Tool Museum (HTTM) in Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Opening on Saturday, May 18, the Home Textile Tool Museum is located in the idyllic village of Orwell, PA, and celebrates the many aspects of at-home fiber processing and cloth production in our region in the early 1800’s. The museum is open every Saturday during the summer from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and hosts a variety of activities, demonstrations and workshops. Opening day demonstrations on May 18 include spinning, weaving, natural dyeing and Merle Eiffert demonstrating blacksmithing. Kathy Halton and Sue Quick will also be talking about linen. May 25 will be Sheep Shearing Day with a series of “Wool Stations” set up to show washing, carding and spinning of wool after it has been detached (sheared) from the sheep. On Saturday June 1, Dan Rhodes will demonstrate making plant fibers into Cordage. Michelle Kaleta and friends will be at the site to demonstrate Spinning Natural Fibers and there will be a talk about the History of Hemp. Fleece to Shawl Day will take place on June 8 with the Bee-ewe-tiful Fiber Friends group showing the steps to take a sheep’s wool fleece through the processes of carding it into roving, spinning it into yarn and ultimately weaving it into a shawl – all in one day. Saturday June 15 will be Embellishments Day. Bobbin Lace, buttons and embroidery will be showcased. This coincides with a 2-day Bobbin Lace and Tatting Workshop on Friday and Saturday (6/14-15). June 22 will host a Charkha Spinning Workshop with Tammi Fazzi and Suzanne Schwartz. A charkha is a simple portable spinning wheel invented by Mahatma Gandhi. Regular museum tours will also be available that day. June 29 is Guild Day. This is a day when several regional weaving, spinning and fiber related guilds will be coming to meet and greet each other, sell and

swap ideas and goods and share tips and information on all things home textile. July 6, 13 and 20, the museum and grounds will be open for tours. The 13th will also be the second day of a Felting workshop with Denise Tarbox and on the 20th, Dick Warner, a woodwright and a timber frame barn expert, will talk about wood joinery at 1:00 pm. On Saturday July 27, Joy McCracken will present “Cranks and Treadles: Early Sewing Machines.” Also Louise Neu showing her antique circular sock knitting machine and Donna Batterson with a collection from the Potter County Historical Society. August starts off with Homesteading Day on August 3. Activities include rug making and small looms will be demonstrated. Regular tours will be held, as they will be on August 10. August 17 will have regular tours, Special lectures with subjects and times to be announced. The final HTTM Saturday program will be August 24 featuring the Black Sheep Hand Spinners Guild from Ithaca for the Annual Wool Waulking Day. Waulking is the process of finishing wool cloth that has been woven on a loom. The process historically involved soaking (sometimes in urine), pounding, pulling and stretching the cloth to soften the fibers. It is a group activity practiced in various ways around the world (sometimes also referred to as “milling,” “fulling” or “tucking.”). At HTTM, visitors and staff will help finish a tweed fabric woven at the museum in the old way and there may be some singing of traditional Gaelic songs to accompany the task. In addition to regular Saturdays, a series of special in-depth workshops are scheduled on select dates from late June to the end of August. Topics featured in these longer workshops include: Pine Needle Basket Making, Beginning Great Wheel Spinning and Survey of Wool Types workshops, Soap Making and Colby Cheese Making, Felting, Tablet Weaving, Bobbin Lace and Tatting, The museum welcomes everyone and has ramps for all buildings. The Home Textile Tool Museum is at 1819 Orwell Hill Road on State Rte. 1036 and is open Saturdays through August 25. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under 12. See HTTM’s website (www.httm.org) and Facebook page. Activities are funded in part by the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency and the United Way of Bradford County.

The thundering of galloping hooves won’t be the only sound drawing in crowds at Tioga Downs this summer. The racetrack and casino announced the exciting lineup for its summer 2019 concert series sponsored by Mirabito Energy Products and Pepsi. Beginning June 7, Tioga Downs will host musical artists from various genres and generations, from country to 1960s-era rock and roll. The inaugural concert of the series on June 7 will feature legendary performer Chubby Checker, known primarily for his iconic 1960 hit cover of “The Twist,” which Billboard recognized in 2008 as the biggest chart hit of all time. Checker will take the stage with Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, a doo-wop vocal group formed in the early 1950s. Tickets will be available at 9 am on May 1 at three price points: $25, $35 and $45. Anyone nostalgic for 1980s radio hits is sure to enjoy George Thorogood, who will perform at Tioga Downs on July 26 with his band The Destroyers. Sponsored by Tioga State Bank, Thorogood and the Destroyers are set to rock the

racetrack with hits like “Bad to the Bone” and “I Drink Alone.” Tickets will be available for $40, $50 or $60. The summer calendar wouldn’t be complete without one for the country fans. On August 8, Lee Greenwood will perform with pop/country artist Crystal Gayle. In a fitting tribute to Greenwood’s biggest hit, “God Bless the U.S.A.,” all of the proceeds from the $20 ticket price will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group. To wrap up the series, 90s rock sensation Smash Mouth will perform from their catalog of hits like “All Star,” and “I’m a Believer.” Tickets will be available at $30, $40 and $50 tiers. Tickets for the summer concert series are available for purchase on Ticketmaster.com and at the Tioga Downs gift shop. All tickets will be on sale on Monday, May 13 except Chubby Checker and Charlie Thomas’ Drifters, which will go on sale May 1 at 9:00 am. To find out more, visit www.tiogadowns.com.

Join the Newark Valley Historical Society (NVHS) at the Farmstead on Saturday, May 18, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, for a delicious tea with sweet and savory treats and a presentation by Rhonda Bickford on ladies’ Regency fashions. Find out about the underpinnings, gowns and colorful accessories which were de rigueur in 1810. Rhonda will dress from chemise to bonnet and gloves while discussing each item of apparel. She finds inspiration for her work from period portraits, fashion plates, and orig-

inal garments. The Regency is her favorite fashion time period because the accessories were especially beautiful, cleverly designed, and embellished with lavish embroidery, ribbons, ruffles and artificial flowers. For adults and youth ages 12+. Seating is limited, and tickets are $10 (or $8 for NVHS members). Send check by 5/11/19 to: NV Historical Soc., PO Box 222, Newark Valley, NY 13811. Call Ellen (607) 748-6828 for reservations.
