DOT Vehicles Join Funeral Procession On March 27, more than 70 New York State Department of Transportation vehicles were part of the funeral procession for fallen co-worker Dennis “Matt” Howe who was killed in an accident on March 18, 2019, while working on Route 17 near Nichols. In the photo (left), the procession is crossing the Court Street Bridge into Owego. The flag is held aloft by ladder trucks from the Owego and Campville Fire Departments. Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Tioga County Designated Official Purple Heart County On Friday, March 29, National Vietnam Veterans Day, Tioga County Veterans’ Service Agency hosted its Second Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day to honor and welcome all Vietnam Era veterans home. The day began with a wreathlaying ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the Tioga County Courthouse Square. The wreath was laid at the memorial by the brother and sister (pictured) of Vietnam veteran U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Wayne Louis Carlson, who was 19 years old when he died in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam, on August 26, 1969. Carlson was a graduate of Owego Free Academy, Class of 1968.
The wreath-laying was followed by a ceremony at the Owego VFW Post 1371 honoring all Vietnam era veterans and families. The Veterans’ Service Agency and the Tioga County Legislature announced the designation of Tioga County as a Purple Heart County and held an unveiling ceremony of the Purple Heart. The remaining signs will be installed in eleven locations across the county when the weather is appropriate. The event was sponsored by the Tioga County Legislature, Tioga County Veterans’ Service Agency, Owego VFW Post 1371 & Auxiliary, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 480, Dept. of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration, and Leadership of Military Order of Purple Heart.
