Strawberry Festival - June 17 & 18, 2022

After a two-year pandemic related hiatus, Owego’s iconic Strawberry Festival will return for two days in June to the streets of Historic Downtown Owego. The dates set for this event, dubbed “Strawberry Jubilee,” are Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18, 2022. There will be a block party on Friday evening, June 17, from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, capped off by a fireworks display. On Saturday, June 18, there will be a parade at 10:00 am, followed by entertainment, vendors, food, and even a return of the dinosaurs. The initial permits have been granted for the festival, and the committee, chaired by Pat Hansen and Wendy Post, is moving forward with the planning stages. Vendor applications are now available, and are limited to food, crafts, and activities for children. Nonprofits are welcome; participation must include one of the accept-

ed categories listed on the Vendor Application, which can be found at www.owego.org. Just click on the Strawberry and go to Vendors. You can also contact Katie Chandler at katierchandler21@ gmail.com. The festival is also seeking sponsors, as they are the ones that keep the festival alive. Funding from sponsors is used to provide security for the event, staging and tents, and free entertainment for the community and beyond. If you would like to sponsor any portion of the Strawberry Festival or for media advertising, send and email to owegomerchants@gmail.com and they will forward your email to the appropriate committee chair. As a sponsor, your name will be included on the parade banner, and in all advertising. For entertainment inquiries, email owegomerchants@gmail.com and they will forward your email to the appropriate committee chair.

“3 Wise Woodsmen” at Waterman Center - March 12 Waterman Center in Apalachin presents “3 Wise Woodsmen” on Saturday, March 12, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the center’s auditorium. Ever wonder why two trees of the same age grow differently? Why one of the trees does well and another does not? When you are walking in the woods do you sometimes find an unusual piece that sparks your curiosity? When woodworking, do you see some piece that has some unusual texture or character that makes you stop and ponder? How do you pay honor or preserve the memory of a tree that was special in your life? Have you noticed large stands of trees dying or diseased or what invasives are lurking in your woods? Jerry Michael, Master Forest Owner with Cornell Cooperative Extension will present a brief history of our northeastern forests and the threats to their future. Ed Nizalowski, Naturalist, will share a collection of items that often have interesting and/or personal stories behind them.
