Angels Over Afghanistan's Yard Sale a Success

Have a Safe & Happy 4th of July Enjoy Your Summer When it’s too hot to cook Let us do the cooking for you, Breakfast, lunch & dinner! 625-3830 Angels over Afghanistan brought in a record-breaking $10,739 at their yard sale last month. The money earned from the sale will go towards purchasing and shipping packages to deployed troops in harm's way. To date, the Angels have sent more than ten tons to our fighting soldiers. The Angels recognize the effort of those who helped with the sale: local

merchants, who provided tents, food, tables, and merchandise; customers who attended the sale; and the many friends who helped unpack and sort items before the sale. The Angels give thanks to all who had a part in making the sale a success. For information about the Angels, go to www.angelsoveriraq.org

The Women in Business Event was scheduled to be held last November and almost cancelled because of the devastat-

ing flood. Fortunately the event was rescheduled for March. It was an extremely successful event and organizers decided because so many were impacted by the flood, $1,000 from ticket sales should go to flood relief. The presentation was held at Tioga Opportunities, 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego.

Apalachin Lions Club Awards Scholarships

“A business without a sign,

is a sign of no business”

Next to word of mouth advertising, signs are the most cost efficient, economical means to communicate YOUR MESSAGE to your customers

This year’s three winners are David Dempski from Owego Free Academy, Martin Donovan from LEAH Home School, and David Benyo from Vestal Senior High.

Local Author Launches New Novel - July 15 Local author R. W. White of Owego invites everyone to the launch of his latest novel, The Secret of Abetifi, on Sunday, July 15, 2:00 to 5:00 pm at The Bundy Museum, 129 Main Street, in Binghamton. The Secret of Abetifi, White's fifth book and third novel, is set in West Africa, and follows the adventures of newlyweds, Francesca and Ben Hamilton, who accept the offer of an expense-paid honeymoon and the opportunity to put their recently-obtained university credentials into practice. While studying a group of centenarians in the mountaintop village of Abetifi, they stumble upon a secret for long life, bringing them into conflict with a multi-national, pharmaceutical giant determined to produce and market a ‘Fountain of Youth’ drug. What was to have been a risk-free honeymoon becomes a terrifying experience of life-

threatening twists and turns, hurtling their adventure into a tense and exciting conclusion. White's previous novel was Hotbed in Tranquility, the first such book on gas drilling and hydrofracking in the Marcellus Shale. All of his books will be available for purchase on July 15, with profits going to The Bundy Museum. Exhibits, refreshments and conversation will be in the Carriage House, in the rear of the museum. Personal tours of the largest collection of African Art and Artifacts outside of New York City will be offered on the halfhour, for which a free-will donation would be appreciated. Parking may be on-street, in the lot behind the Main Street Baptist Church, or behind 127-129 Main Street. For more information, call the museum at (607) 772-9179 or on the internet go to www.booksbybobwhite.com.

Anyone driving through or walking in the Village of Nichols couldn’t help but notice the balloons, flags, and prominent display of red, white, and blue at the Cady Library. The Community Care Network of Nichols (CCNN) sponsored the annual Flag Day celebration at the Cady Library on June 14.

Nichols’ Mayor, LeeAnn Tinney welcomed guests to the event. Pastor John Austin offered the invocation. Special guest speaker was Jim Raftis from the VFW post 1371. Members of the VFW 1371 performed the flag folding ceremony, explaining to the audience the significance of the 13 folds. Special music was provided by Taylor Timchack, “The National Anthem”; Beth Bailey, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”; Ted Dydynski, “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. The Nichols/Tioga Center Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts assisted with the Pledge of Allegiance. The Nichols/Tioga Center Girl Scouts served refreshments. Community Care Network of Nichols’ board chairperson Barb Crannell was the MC for the event and was assisted by Uncle Sam, Max Dydynski, in presenting the certificates to the student contest winners. Several students participated in the Flag Day contest, from coloring a photo of our flag in the younger elementary grades, to writing an inspiring essay of what the flag means to them. Each entry, whether chosen as a “winner” or not, was honored with a free ice cream sandwich from Dad’s Ice Cream. Those entries, which stood out as unique and original, were able to display or read their winning entries to the audience. Each received a $5.00 gift certificate for Dad’s Ice Cream. All in all, it was a wonderfully attended celebration of our American Flag. CCNN would like to thank all who participated and helped make the evening an inspiring and patriotic event.

Scholarship Race at Tioga Downs

Famous For Chicken, Ribs & Pulled Pork Last month at Tioga Downs, five local area high school students got the opportunity of a lifetime in the third annual Tioga Downs’ Scholarship Race. The students representing five local area high schools were: Kayla Pepper of Johnson City High School, Whitney Seabrooks of Binghamton High School, Gabriella Martinichio of Chenango Forks, Adrian Roma of Maine-Endwell, and Karina Liberati of Chenango Valley. The five students had participated in training sessions with some of the Tioga Downs’ horsemen over a three week period in preparation for Sunday’s race. Helping assist the girls, and also riding in the double seated jog carts with them for the race were Jason MacDougal, Tim Lanpher, Corey Braden, Fern Paquet Jr., and Tyler Freese. The students raced once around the racetrack in between the second and third race on Sunday afternoon and it was a photo finish at the wire. Karina Liberati of Chenango Valley and driver

Tyler Freese edged out Kayla Pepper and Jason MacDougal to take home the $3,000 scholarship for first place. Kayla Pepper received $2,000 for second, Whitney Seabrooks finished third good for $1,200, Adriana Roma received $800 for fourth, and Gabriella Martinichio picked up $500 for fifth. “This is one of our best events we have at Tioga throughout the year. It gets some of our local area kids involved in harness racing and gives them a great opportunity to help pay for their continued education after high school” said Jason M. Settlemoir, VP of Racing and Simulcast. The sponsors helping support the third annual Scholarship race are the Harness Horse Breeder’s of New York State, Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association, New York Sire Stakes, and Tioga Downs.
