Apalachin Highway Clean Up Would you like to help? The Apalachin Lions club is looking for help with clean up of Rt. 434 on Saturday April 27, at 9:00 am. The clean up crew will meet at BEAM Electronics on Rt. 434. The amount of time normally spent is approximately 2 hours to pick up trash on a three-mile stretch of Rt. 434 in Apalachin. The Apalachin Lions Club held their 58th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 24, behind the TLC-BOCES School on Penna. Ave. in Apalachin. The children hunted for eggs marked with certain numbers. Children who found the specially marked eggs received prizes. Children who did not win a prize were able to redeem their eggs for a chocolate bunny. The Apalachin Lions Club also held an Eye Screening.

"The Miracle Worker" Brought to Life on Ti-Ahwaga

Photo by John Dudak The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players will present William Gibson's play "The Miracle Worker" on April 5, 6, 7, April 12, 13, 14, and April 19, 20, 21 at the TiAhwaga Performing Arts Center, 42 Delphine Street in Owego. "The Miracle Worker" is an emotionally charged classic drama based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, "The Story of My Life," that tells the story of the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher, Annie Sullivan, and her charge, the blind and mute Helen Keller who is trapped in a secret and silent world. Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence in this heartwarming story. The play is directed by Linda Fenescey and the cast includes Courtney Bennett as Annie Sullivan, Laura Jackson as Helen Keller, Todd Smith as Capt. Keller, Nichole Langton as Kate Keller, Austin Brocious as James Keller,

Benefit for Firefighter's Children - April 7 A Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Sunday, April 7, from Noon to 5:00 pm, to benefit the children of the late Matthew Porcari, a member of the Owego Fire Department who died in January while responding to a structure fire. The benefit will be held at the Moose Lodge, Rt 17C in Owego, and includes a 50/50 Raffle and a Cake Wheel. There
will be a DJ providing music. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. All proceeds of the event will go for college and future expenses of Matthew Porcari's children, John and Tierney Porcari. Y. 13827 607-687-3210 This photo, taken in 1967, shows the monument "In Memory of Apalachin Fireman" being installed on the grounds of Apalachin Fire Department Station #1 on Pennsylvania Avenue in Apalachin. This year, the Apalachin Fire Department celebrates its 100th anniversary. In 1913, a group of firefighters (the number was estimated at 13) gathered at the local drug store and formed a Chemical Company. This was a bucket brigade which covered an area of one mile in radius from the four corners. In 1922, the first motor truck was purchased which carried two forty gallon soda/acid water tanks. The current Apalachin Fire Department has 10 vehicles and 80 members. The first fire station was obtained in 1930, and in 1936 the first water district was formed. In 1940, a Fire Station 1 was built on the site where the current Station 1 stands. In the early 1950s, that station was deemed too small and the current station was built in its place. The construction of Station 2 on Route 434 was begun in 1956. Station 3 on Pennsylvania Avenue was completed in the mid 1970’s. The Emergency Squad started in
1948 with an ambulance donated by Coleman & Daniels. This ambulance was a hearse that was converted to serve as an ambulance. Their first call was in May of 1949. In 1960, the first Fire Department Field days was held to raise money for uniforms and equipment. This event was held annually until damage from the flood of 2011 prevented the running of the Field Days in 2012. Now, with the return of the Fire Departments Field Days, June 5 to June 8, we anticipate several events to revolve around the Department’s 100th Anniversary. Watch for announcements of these events as we near the Field Days. The fire department is also gathering pictures, stories, and articles that are of historical significance to the Apalachin Fire Department. Head Start "Get to Know Us" Night Head Start of Tioga Opportunities, Inc. will host a “Get to Know Us” Night for all prospective families and children on Wednesday, April 17, at the Candor, Waverly, Owego, and Newark Valley sites. Families from the Village of Spencer are welcome to attend at the Waverly Center and Tioga Center families are welcome to attend at the Owego or Waverly Centers. Head Start is a preschool program for children ages 3-5, children with special needs, and children from families that meet eligibility requirements and is offered at no-cost. This is an opportunity for families to visit the Head Start classrooms, meet the staff, and play with the materials and equipment. Staff will be available to answer questions, assist with
filling out applications, and help children enjoy their visit. 2013 Lions Club Broom Sale It’s time again for the Apalachin Lions Club’s Annual Broom Sale. This is their Community Service Fund Raiser, and the money raised is returned to those in need in our community. Each year the Lions Club typically contributes over $25,000 to help local residents. But, over 2011-12 the Lions distributed an additional $10,000 or more for disaster relief alone. Some of their other projects are scholarships to high school seniors, Special Olympics, highway cleanup, pre-school eye screening, Christmas Baskets, Santa Phones, Easter Egg Hunt, eye exams and glasses,
emergency expense assistance, and backto-school gift certificates. The Apalachin Lions Club is only able to serve the community because the community supports them. Please be generous in your support of their Annual Broom Sale. They will be selling door-to -door in our area over May 6, 7, 8, and 9. Strawberry Festival 5K Run/Walk Sanctioned by USATF The 2nd Annual Owego Strawberry Festival's 5K Run/Walk will kick off this year's festival and will be held Friday, June 14, beginning at 7:00 pm. This year, the event has been sanctioned by the USA Track & Field Association. A USATF Sanction is an official designation issued by USATF, through the Niagara Association, which approves and licenses the holding of a competitive track & field, long distance running or race walking event in the United States. The Sanction is also a contract, which evidences the event's commitment to follow national and international rules and regulations of the sport and to provide a safe environment for the participants and spectators. A sanction tells athletes that this event is being run according to applicable
competition rules and provides some insurance coverage for runners and volunteers. Registrations are now being accepted to participate in this year's "Strawberry Shake" 5K Run/Walk. The entry fee is $20 for the 5K and $10 for the Kids' One Mile Race. All proceeds will benefit the Owego Strawberry Festival, the O-A Athletic Boosters Club, and future event activities in the Village of Owego. USDA to Survey Maple Producers The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be conducting a Maple Syrup survey during April and May. Representatives from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will be surveying producers in ten of the nation’s largest maple producing states, including New York. This survey will gather information on number of taps, yield, production, price, and value of production in New York. Results from last year’s survey established New York’s rank as 2nd in the nation for production of maple syrup behind Vermont. As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential by law. “NASS safeguards the privacy of all responses, ensuring that no
individual operation or producer can be identified,” said King Whetstone, Director of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Northeastern Region. The National Agricultural Statistics Service is even exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, so producers can be guaranteed that their individual data will not be released to any person or any other agency. Survey results will be published in NASS’s Crop Production Report to be released on June 12, 2013. This and all NASS reports are available on the agency’s web site: www.nass.usda.gov. On March 15, staff from Camp Pioneer, a year-round Christian camp and Conference Center located near Lake Erie in Western New York, visited students at Owego's Zion Lutheran School. Leah Sallach, Camp Pioneer Program Director, and Kellye Coyne, Camp Pioneer intern, treated the students to games, songs and worship during school. Families were welcomed back in the evening for the same line-up of fun. The children enjoyed working togeth-
er on a variety of challenges that focused on teamwork and cooperation, such as moving a golf ball down a set of tubes, making room on a blanket for everyone as it gets smaller, and “walking” across the gym as a team on a pair of skis. Tioga County 4-H student Jax Maxian traveled to Albany to participate in 4-H's 78th Capitol Days. She joined other students from the Southern Tier to tour the Capitol and attend the annual legislative breakfast where they learned about State government by meeting face -to-face with their representatives.

TAG president Robin Benesh presents a check for $500 to Larry Day, Clearinghouse Coordinator for the Bridge. The Tioga Acting Guild (TAG) wrapped up another dinner theater event at the former Nichols Elementary School March 15 through 17. In keeping with TAG’s slogan, “The Act that gives back”, TAG presented a check for $500 to The Bridge of the Penn-York Valley Churches. It is the mission of TAG to choose a local charitable organization to be the recipient of a portion of their proceeds from each show. TAG has thus far donated to the Open Door Mission, the local chapter of The Salvation Army, and The Bridge. In keeping with the second part of their mission TAG is committed to keeping its dinner theater costs to a nominal fee to make it affordable for
their audiences. Coming up over Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-12, TAG will be performing “Lend Me A Wig”, a comedy by Robin Benesh. That event will also be a dinner theater and a portion of the proceeds will be designated for the “TAG Community Service Scholarship”. TAG created a scholarship, which will be offered to graduating seniors at the Tioga Central High School who demonstrate and plan on continuing in community service activities. Tioga County Contradance Celebrates 10 Years
Zion Students Celebrate Easter Students at Owego's Zion Lutheran School celebrated Easter on March 27. In their weekly Chapel time, the children sang songs in remembrance of each part of Jesus’ death and resurrection starting from Palm Sunday through Easter. Their final song, Listen, God is Calling, was about witnessing to others. Families were invited to a ham luncheon. The parents shared a dish to pass, with the school providing the ham. After lunch, the children enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt. Zion is blessed by the many volunteers who helped serve at the luncheon as well as hide eggs, and the students love having family members involved. Zion holds family meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas as well, which are always a favorite of the children.

In 2003, Kevin Millar, now mayor of Owego, approached George Swaney, proprietor of Tioga Trails Café, 50 Lake Street, and said, “You ought to have contradancing here.” In April, the first dance was held with Hilton Baxter calling to the music of Kitchen Chair, and the Tioga County Contradance was born. Contradancing, like square dancing, is a called dance done to a walking step and is easy to learn. No experience is necessary since all dances are taught and prompted. Partners are not required. Come to Tioga Trails Café on Sunday, April 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, for a piece of anniversary cake and join the dancing or just listen. Hilton Baxter, who called the first dance, will be teaching and calling dances to the music of Escape (pictured above), who spontaneously fuses material from many traditions into a colorful sound that is wholly unique, best thought of as Quebecois – Irish Swedish – French-Techno – New England original contradance music. Escape consists of Tim Ball, Jodi Austin, and Peter Blue. Tim Ball is known for his fluid, rhythmic fiddle style that lifts dancer’s feet and captures listener’s ears. Jodi Austin plays keyboards and loves the rhythms of techno and electronic music. Peter Blue has fallen in love with Quebecois and
Swedish music, and adds nyckelharpa, diatonic accordions, bones, bodhran, hand drums, and foot percussion to the band. General admission is $7; students and seniors (55+), $5; family maximum, $15. Vestal Student Plays at Carnegie Hall Suhanya Pathman, an eighth-grader at Vestal Middle School, was one of 15 students chosen by the Northeast Pennsylvania Music Teacher’s Association to play for the 10th Annual Carnegie Hall Recital on March 30 in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Suhanya was one of 300 students who auditioned for this event. A student of

Susquenango member and astronomer Don Rumrill, along with the planetarium staff, will present this spectacular program showing the seasonal stars and constellations and relating these views to celestial navigation. Using the planetarium’s new digital star projector, they will demonstrate the movement of the earth relative to the night sky and show how mariners have used the stars and planets
to determine their location for centuries. This will be an exciting educational program for boaters, as well as stargazers. Historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, located at 117 Main Street in Owego, recently completed an accessibility project including a new elevator. The church has now embarked on another ambitious project. The Delaware Pipe organ, first installed in 1963 under the direction of the late David Gay, is undergoing a complete renovation, restoration and upgrade to prepare the instrument for its next 50 years and beyond. In the flood of 2011 with five feet of water in the basement, the blower to the organ was rendered unusable. Parsons Pipe Organ Company built a new blower for the instrument and by Christmas services the organ was once again making beautiful music. Parsons Pipe Organ Company was selected to do the renovation work on this 39 rank instrument. For three days in January 2013, the crew worked tirelessly to remove 2,379 pipes to take to the shop for repairs and revoicing. Before removing the pipes, the voicing expert, Duane Prill, and his assistant listened to each and every pipe, noting the tone and pitch plus any other inadequacies in the sound that would need to be addressed at the shop. The entire Parsons crew - a human “dis”assembly line - wrapped pipes, packed little ones in boxes or gently laid larger pipes row by row on the tops of the pews, preparing them for their journey to Canandaigua, where Parsons shop is located. This writer had never seen such huge bales of bubble wrap! Matt Parsons, the Project Manager, with another crew member took the organ console apart and packed it one section at a time for the trip to the shop in Canandaigua. It will receive all new draw knobs and a Peterson Integrated Pipe Control System. This digital system will allow for many different organists to program their own settings for the music they play. The keyboards will be refurbished and the depth of the keys adjusted to make for smooth playing. The console is to be moved out into the Chancel of the church, where the organist will be able to better hear the balance and tone of the instrument and also be able to see the entire church, which is very important for all of the various services that involve processions.
A new wind system known as a Wedge Bellows is to be installed. The instrument has always had a wind reservoir system. The reservoirs did not control wind pressure and thus there were inconsistencies in the wind pressure, affecting the overall tone of the organ. In February, all of the wind reservoirs were removed and the pipe room was made ready for the new wind system and the return of the pipes. The Wedge Bellows will provide for ‘even’ winding… making the instrument sound “happier.” New for this instrument will be the addition of the 40th rank. An oboe will be installed as its first new “solo” voice in 50 years. A very generous musician donated it to St. Paul’s Organ Project. In the future, it is hoped that several more voices will be added to the instrument to augment its beautiful sound. To that end, St. Paul’s has an established Organ Fund, which accepts donations towards the addition of new ranks of voices for the instrument. A rank is a group of 61 pipes, corresponding to the number of notes on the keyboard. There have been many organists at St. Paul’s since David Gay brought the vision of this instrument to life. At present the organist is Jean Radice, Adjunct Professor of Organ and Harpsichord at Ithaca College. Fr. Geoff Doolittle is the Priest at St. Paul’s, Owego. A musical celebration will take place upon completion of the total project. (more photos on Page 15)
New Services for Kinship Caregivers Kinship caregivers - relative and family friends who are raising children are a natural ally of state child's welfare services and actually care for many more children than are in foster care. Children often come to live with kinship families for reasons that could cause children to enter foster care. Yet, the number of children in private kinship care far exceeds those in foster care. In New York State, there are less than 15,000 children in foster care, compared to more than 153,000 children living with kin outside of foster care. Of these, an estimated 3,280 kinship children are in Broome County and 893 in Tioga County. In these counties, the Family Enrichment Network (FEN) and the NYS Kinship Navigator provide services for kinship families. FEN is a local provider offering counseling services, a help line, parenting groups, support groups, and teen programs The Kinship Navigator is a statewide resource providing info, referrals, advocacy, and legal information via its toll free number and its website. Recently, the Navigator received one of eight national grants from the federal Children's Bureau to enhance services in
five targeted counties: Broome, Tioga, Orange, Ulster and Dutchess counties. The project's purpose is to keep children out of foster care by reaching all kinship caregivers and implementing enhanced services, including collaboration with the local social services departments, establishment of a pro bono legal assistance program, a leadership training for caregivers, access to FEN, and other services. Critical to the grant is the evaluation component that will identify kinship needs and outcomes for children and caregivers. One of the principal services of both FEN and the Navigator is to help caregivers obtain financial assistance that is available thru a special public assistance grant. As part of the project, the Navigator is partnering with FEN to expand outreach across Broome and Tioga counties. The project's goal is to connect with all caregivers in the counties, and help them obtain financial assistance as well as other services. The Navigator will provide its services and direct access to FEN's services, available by calling Kinship Navigator at 877-454-6463 (MF, 9-4) or go to www.nysnavigator.org.

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier dedicated a new truck for its nationally recognized Mobile Food Pantry Program on March 27 at a reception that acknowledged the donors who made the truck possible. Thanked for their gifts were the family of the late Donna Casano Benedict of Ithaca, Tioga Downs Casino Racing and Entertainment, the Triad Foundation, and the Hilliard Foundation. The new truck is the largest of the three trucks that deliver food to Mobile Food Pantry distribution sites across the Food Bank’s six-county service area: Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins Counties. It is also the Food Bank’s first Mobile Food Pantry truck with a refrigerated bay. The addition of the new truck will enable the Food Bank to distribute 500,000 more pounds of food to highneed, rural communities and urban areas where access to food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency food agencies is limited. The gift from the Benedict family also established a fund that will support the expansion of the Mobile Food Pantry
over the next five years. The tribute to Mrs. Casano reads, “In loving memory of Donna Casano Benedict, who knew hunger and spent her life ensuring those around her were well fed. Mangia! Mangia!” A plaque honoring Mrs. Benedict will be installed in the Food Bank. The new truck was purchased with a challenge gift of $59,113 from the John P. Hussman Foundation of Maryland and was matched with gifts from the donors honored at the March 27th event. A condition of the Hussman Foundation grant was that the challenge gift be matched dollar for dollar by other donors. The Food Bank was the one of the first two food banks nationally that completed the challenge successfully. More than $200,000 in matching gifts were ultimately raised by the Food Bank. The Hussman Foundation Challenge was made available to food banks across the country by Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network. The names of all the donors, including the Hussman Foundation, are on the back of the truck.
