The Fab Five Back in 1964, a group of friends skipped school to see the Beatles in concert. While en route, the friends pulled up alongside the Beatles on the Van Wyck Expressway in New York. After a brief exchange, Ringo Starr took a photo of the friends. Nobody believed them.

It wasn’t until Starr published the photo in a book 49 years later that the friends had proof of their encounter.

When the media tracked down the driver, Bob Toth of New Jersey, it only made sense to reunite the friends for an updated photo. They were later invited to meet Starr backstage at a show in Vegas, which surely made it worth the three-day suspension from school.

Hutch’s Pie Shop still a hometown favorite after 85 years

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent If you ask David Hutchens the secret to folks loving his family’s famous fried pies for so many years, he’ll give you a simple answer.

“Because they’re good,” he said with a smile.

“My dad (a then 22-year-old R.F. Hutchens) and his friend (Frank Grimes) who started the company together, they worked on a recipe until they found what worked. It was during a time of depression and they had

to find a way to make a living and eat.”

And, as David added, “It took off, which is surprising, because no one was eating out back then. If they were buying them during that time, you know they were good.”

And they are still great today, just ask any of the many customers who have consumed one – or a hundred – over the years since 1935. David, now 75, bought the business from his dad in 1977, and eight years later opened a storefront that remains open to this day selling a variety of sandwiches – and the pies, of course.

“Back when high school students could eat off campus, they’d line up out the door. Of course, they all wanted ham-and-cheese rolls,” he said.

Breakfast pies have also become extremely popular. They can include a variety of fillings, including scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, cheese, ham, and chorizo.

“Breakfast makes up 50 percent of our business,” David said, adding with a laugh “Folks like cold cut sandwiches also, even though they can make those at home, but we must be doing something special.”

Indeed they are, said Charles Pearcy, a regular customer since the restaurant opened.

“I knew Mr. Hutchens (R.F.) and his daughter when they made pies in the garage,” he said. “I love the friendly atmosphere. The ambiance is great.

I love their pineapple pies – and they have the best coffee in Weatherford.”

In addition to his regular visits, Pearcy and his Army veteran buddies gather once a month at Hutch’s.

David said apple and apricot are the most popular pies, followed by

cherry and peach, of course, this being Parker County.

“Everybody likes apple pie, baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet, isn’t that what they say?” he said, chuckling.

R.F. used to take pride delivering all pies he made the same day. Today, the only change in them, David said, is a change from corn starch to modern food starch, along with use of preservative to give the pies a longer lasting time.

David discontinued the wholesale distribution in 2017, but said it has since started up again recently with a distributor who lives in Abilene.

“He works his way back, stopping along the way, and he’s doing really well,” David said. “They do really well in mom-and-pop stores, like ones in Minerals Wells and Lipan.”

David said what separates Hutch’s pies from others is the crust.

“I just had one from a company in Ranger, and the filling was good, but I think the crust has to be good for it to be a great pie,” he said.

David has now turned over management of the restaurant to his son Brandon, 52, who said they are always on the lookout for new pie flavors.

“I’m always open to them. Right now (with COVID) might not be the best time to start something new, but I am always open to suggestions,” Brandon said. “But also, our base is loyal, and they love their regulars, so we have to keep them around.”

David said they tried coconut fried pies for a while, but they weren’t all that popular. He also made pecan pies, but the price of pecans made that difficult to continue. At Christmas and Thanksgiving they make mincemeat pies.

“Some people say they don’t like mincemeat, but they’ve never tried ours,” he said. “Also, our daughter loves blueberries, and on her birthday we would make her a blueberry pie.

“Anything you can make, just about, can be put in a fried pie.”

Case in point, sloppy joe pies. A friend of Brandon’s orders some special every now and then, David said.

While COVID-19 has slowed down business some, as it has pretty much everywhere, Hutch’s continues to have loyal customers. David said he is confident the restaurant will survive, however, just as it has survived the opening of numerous sandwich restaurants throughout town.

“We’ve held our own, which tells me the food’s good,” he said.

And it will continue to be a family business for as long as it’s open, which looks to be many more years.

“Over the years, practically everyone who’s kin to me has worked here,” David said. “I’m just thankful for all of our loyal customers. We’ve had generations of families that have eaten here for a long time.”

To which Brandon added, “To be able to survive as long as we have says something in itself, especially now.”

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is about Esther and her experience with such a time in her life. She had been appointed queen, by the king of Persia (modern day Iran and enemy of Israel) even though she was of Jewish descent.

She was an orphan and raised by her cousin, Mordecai, a Jew who was exiled from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. He raised Esther as his own,

At this time there was a Persian law, punishable by death, that forbade access to the king, and the law applied even to the queen. Esther decides that she must take a risk and go before the king to plead for the Jews. She goes for it and is well received revealing to the king that Haman has plotted to kill her and her people.

Ironically, Haman ends up getting hanged on the gallows he built for Mordecai.

Esther was a brave woman. She was terrified but she knew that God had a

job for her, and He would prepare her and take care of her.

Sometimes we must wait and wander in the wilderness of preparation – for a long, uneventful time. God is refining us and getting us ready to be used for His glory.

We Need God We need God’s favor and help. When we live a life that is pleasing to God, He will find favor with us and give us favor with other people.

A Hot Breakfast For One in Minutes

Larry Ingle likes bugs. So, it was no surprise to anyone at Hilltop Park Assisted Living Courtyard when he valiantly came to a grasshopper’s aid.

We’ll let him tell the story: “I witnessed it slamming into the water and start ‘swimming,’ using its legs, to the nearest side of the pond.

It used its longish legs to propel itself slowly toward the side. I saw that it could possibly make it to the side, now about two feet away, but it stopped abruptly as if it was tired and/or it was waiting for me to do something.

“By this time, if I hadn’t been watching the grasshopper, it could have been fish food. But, I was there and I performed a relatively easy water rescue. I gently but decidedly scooped up the grasshopper with my right hand and immediately transferred it to my left hand, thinking I might get some photos of it. Sure enough, and for about 10-12 minutes or more the grasshopper stayed on my blackgloved left hand while I observed it doing what any human would do.

I was so amazed I just stared at the little guy. He (she) first used its front left leg (as seen in the photo) to wipe away the water, then it used its front right leg to do the same on its right side, just as a human could lift their left and right hands to use a dry towel on their wet face and head.

time God is great. Truly awe-inspiring it was and I was so glad that I did not hesitate to rescue the potentially drowning grasshopper. I talked to it constantly during the 10-12 minutes it was on my hand. At about the 13th minute, the grasshopper flew away quickly and I remembered (with imagination) what I said to it.

“I said, ‘Hey, when you filed your flight plan near and over the pond outside of Assisted Living with Hilltop’s FAA insect rep, you, Mr. or Ms. Grasshopper (‘Gary’ or ‘Gari’) should have remembered that it was possible for you to lose altitude over this little body of water due to some relatively strong wind shift turbulence in the air nearby.’

“The grasshopper appeared to nod in agreement with that. After a bit more fatherly advice from me, the grasshopper flicked its wings a couple of times to see if they were dry enough to resume its flight. They were and it quickly vanished into a tree near the pond. Perhaps it will live to tell its offspring about the rescue. Hopefully so.

I just love bugs!”

One-of-a-kind, designed by Mother

by Pat Mehaffey Hoopla Correspondent Blessed late in life with her only daughter, my mother longed to dress me in pretty, frilly, little-girl clothes, but what we earned was spent on essentials, not frivolities. With characteristic resourcefulness, she found a solution at a time when American families suffered under the grinding power of the Great Depression.

Cash was as scarce as a softhearted banker, but Mother brought in money selling eggs, butter, milk and cream.

She used some of these proceeds to purchase nutritious feed guaranteed to help the hens produce bigger and better eggs. To Mother’s delight, this chicken feed was packaged in 100% cotton cloth sacks of various designs.

By always choosing the bag with the same pattern as the one before, she soon had enough

matching fabric for a useful garment.

On my sixth birthday, with my first day of school approaching, Mother said, “You must have something special to wear!”

At night, after finishing all farming chores, she stitched a three-piece outfit complete with dress, slip and underpants on her mother’s old Singer treadle sewing machine. She used patterns cut from brown paper bags.

Mother selected bright yellow feed sacks with tiny white flowers scattered all over, and she used yellow bias tape and white rickrack for decoration. When the school bus stopped at out mailbox that first-day-ofschool morning, I marched up the steps clutching my lunch box and feeling like a princess in my special “designer” clothes. I felt cherished and content wearing my sunbright ensemble, but one unexpected gift remained.

In a little pocket sewn on the front of the skirt, Mother had placed a buffalo nickel.

The dress of sunshine and flowers proved to be a good omen of things to come.

Since I was the smallest child on the school bus, the older riders looked after me. Others, larger and stronger, helped me up and down the steps, saying, “Don’t forget your book.” “Here’s your lunch box.” On the long ride home at the end of the day, one rider shared a leftover apple. Another gave me a stick of Juicy

Feed and flour were once delivered in fabric bags. Families often relied on the fabric to clothe their children.

Fruit chewing gum. I wished we had school every day.

Soon followed a red dress with a full skirt that spun out around me as I twirled. Mother used white embroidery thread to decorate the yoke with flowers and leaves.

As winter approached, Mother had enough brown floral feed sacks to make me a long-sleeved dress trimmed with orange. I wore it over my beige long stockings. They were ugly but felt good on the walks to and from the bus stop. I took them off when I got to school and stuffed them in my book bag. Then my brown and orange dress looked pretty.

As the years passed, we prospered, and I no longer wore feed sack dresses. But no garment I ever owned gave me more pride and satisfaction than those “One-of-a kind, designed by Mother” dresses.

Yvonne De Carlo ‘Lily’ From Munsters It’s hard to imagine that The Munsters aired for only two seasons since it has entertained us for nearly 60 years. And some may be surprised to know that actress Yvonne De Carlo (Lily) was once called “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.”

It’s true that underneath that green makeup and goth attire, De Carlo was a head-turner, but it was a movie producer that gave her the De Carlo as Lily Munster title.

“It was a straight publicity thing but it ballooned,” she told the The Ottawa Citizen in 1979. “Of course, I never could wear blue jeans to the market after that. I had a reputation to uphold.”

Another surprising fact? Yvonne was a year older than Al Lewis, who played her father (Grandpa) on the show.

De Carlo suffered a minor stroke in 1998.

She later became a resident of the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, in Woodland Hills, California, a charity started by Charlie Chaplin to care for entertainers who fell on hard times. She died there from heart failure on January 8, 2007.

Contribute to their education. If you want to help your grandchildren pay for college, you have a variety of options, including 529 plans. You could also simply set aside some money in an investment account earmarked for education.

But you don’t just have to stick to helping out financially – you might also want to do some research to see what scholarships are available.

Consider a UGMA/UTMA account. The Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) and Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) are custodial accounts that provide a relatively easy way for you to give money to your young grandchildren. A financial advisor can help determine if such a plan is right for you. However, once you put money into the UGMA or UTMA, you no longer have any legal access or authority over the funds unless you are the custodian managing the account.

After children reach the age of majority – typically 18 or 21 – or the age of termination if the state where they live allows for the assets to be held until a later age, they will control the assets, and they may not want to use the money as you had envisioned, such as for college.

(Also, tax issues for custodial accounts can be complicated, so, before opening an UGMA or UTMA, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor.)

Consider gifts to older grandchildren. If you have older grandchildren, you might want to help them out if they’re saving for a down payment on a home, or are between jobs, or perhaps are even having children of their own. You can give $15,000 per year, per individual, with-

tions, such as requiring your grandchildren to turn a specific age before they can receive their inheritance. You could also codify the same requirements through the use of a living trust. Contact your legal advisor to determine if such a trust is appropriate for your situation.

Update beneficiary designations. If you want your grandchildren to receive proceeds from various accounts, such as your 401(k), IRA and life insurance, you may need to update the beneficiary designations, which can even supersede the instructions on your will. Keep in mind that if you have grandchildren with special needs, you may want to designate a supplemental needs trust for your grandchild as the beneficiary instead of naming your grandchild directly. Again, contact your legal advisor for more information.

These aren’t the only steps you can take to help your grandchildren, but they should give you some options to consider. The world is an expensive place, and any assistance you can provide to your beloved grandkids can make a big difference in their lives.

My wife is always shoving articles in front of me from myriad publications she subscribes to

I will save you the trouble. The answer is probably NO. The last issue of Consumer Reports (CR) was politely placed in front of my face with this cover headline: “How to Eat less Plastic.” The actual article inside is titled: “Think You Don’t Eat Plastic?”, which is a sentence fraught with both dietary and grammatical issues.

I have to admit, the subject intrigued me. For years, I’ve been trying to cut back on digesting plastic, limiting my intake of Saran Wrap, 6-inch rulers and soda straws. It’s not easy; temptation is everywhere.

But seriously, CR has done a great deal of research on this, and apparently the average person eats the equivalent of a credit card a week. You can imagine how deadly it would be to swallow an entire Mastercard. You certainly would not want to expire before the card does.

I hate it when scientists try to simplify statistics by putting them in terms they think the everyday person can relate to: * If pet owners could somehow collect all the pet hair they accidentally consume in a year, they could knit a sweater. * Over a lifetime, you generate wax buildup in your ears that would make enough candles to top a six-year-old’s birthday cake. * If you don’t wash your hair at least once a month, the oil secreted from your scalp could lubricate a bike chain.

“Look at this,” Mary Ellen said, pointing to the article in CR. “All these micro-plastic particles are in the air – billions of them. This makes breathing very dangerous, Dick. You have to be really careful when you inhale.”

This put a lot of pressure on me, because inhaling is like half of what my breathing has been all about for most of my life. Mary Ellen said not to worry about the exhaling. So we split the difference. Compromise! Isn’t that what marriage is all about?

A few new rules have been laid down in my home: * I am no longer allowed to reheat food in a plastic container, or microwave anything on a paper plate. * I can’t use the plastic bags provided in the supermarket. I have to bring my own cloth bags, which I had already been doing but I always forget and leave them in the trunk when I go in the store. Every time.

Before I go in our house, I transfer everything to the cloth bags. But now I am hiding 300 plastic bags in my underwear drawer.

I read in that magazine that to control the amount of plastic you ingest, you should be sure to dust and vacuum every day.

I underlined that part and showed it to my wife who generally handles those parts of the housework.

She read it, placed the magazine down and said: “Don’t believe everything you read.”

Plant fall color soon Fall is a time to enjoy your landscape and garden. Whether it’s an estate or a patio, that retreat to the beauty of nature seems doubly good when temperatures start to become more hospitable.

PLANT: • Nursery stock. Your local retailer has restocked for the fall planting season. Sit down and visit with their landscape designer, and make some magic happen at your place.

• If you have daffodils, species tulips or other spring-flowering bulbs that have become crowded over the years, dig and divide them immediately. If you plan to plant more this fall, buy types that will establish and rebloom year after year.

• Wildflower seeds for spring blooms are planted in early fall. After all, that’s the way nature does it. The seeds germinate with fall rains and establish deep roots over the winter, so they’ll be able to pop forth with blooms as warm weather returns in the spring. Sow the seeds in lightly cultivated soil where the plants won’t have to compete with turfgrass. Keep them watered until they’re up and growing. Generally, that will be 3 to 4 weeks.

PRUNE: • Seed stalks and browned foliage from perennials to tidy up the look of the garden.

• Continue mowing at the recommended height for the type of turfgrass you’re growing. If you allow the grass to grow tall it will become thin and weeds will have an easier time crowding in.

• Dead and damaged branches from shade trees.

FERTILIZE: • Lawn with all-nitrogen, highquality lawn food. As much as half of the nitrogen can be in slow-release form. Turf experts tell us this

• Patio pots and hanging baskets with complete-and-balanced plant food to promote a new flush of growth in fall’s better weather.

• Iron to correct chlorosis in acidloving plants such as gardenias, azaleas, wisterias, dogwoods and waxleaf ligustrums. Include sulfur to help lower soil’s pH and keep iron in soluble form. Keep iron products off masonry and painted surfaces.

ON THE LOOKOUT: • Apply pre-emergent weedkiller granules (Dimension, Halts or Balan) by September 10 to prevent germination of annual bluegrass, rescuegrass and ryegrass. You do not get a second chance!

• Chinch bugs are still rampant in St. Augustine turf. They’ll always be in the hottest, sunniest parts of your lawn. Grass will appear dry but won’t respond to irrigation. The black BB-sized insects are visible if you get on your hands and knees and part the grass at the interface of healthy and browning grass. There are several good insecticides labeled for their control.

• If you have houseplants that have been outdoors for the summer, begin to watch them for mealybugs, spider mites and other pests. Treat at once if you find them.

• Cabbage loopers may show up on cabbage, broccoli and related plants. Looping caterpillars that eat holes in the plants’ leaves. Apply Bacillus thuringiensis (“B.t.”) to control them.

A Monarch visits a beautiful Mexican mint marigold plant

n Mexican Mint Marigold One of the first times I saw Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida), it was being offered for sale at a North Texas nursery. The nursery wasn’t very busy, but that little cluster of Mexican mint marigold plants certainly was. The Monarch butterflies had found it, and they were stuck on it like iron filings on a magnet.

There are many things to like about this plant. Let me share just a few.

• It’s perennial, growing to 15 to 25 inches tall and wide.

• It blooms in the fall, so plant it

accordingly. It’s handsome with fall asters or Mexican bush salvias – nice contrasts of color.

• It’s a great pollinator flower.

• It thrives in full sun, and it’s tolerant of occasional drought.

• It may be a marigold, but it looks completely unlike the annuals we know so well.

• Unlike African and French marigolds, it isn’t attacked by spider mites.

• Its foliage is highly fragrant, used in cooking as it goes by its other common name of Mexican tarragon.
