The other night, I jotted down every single detail that caught Mary Ellen’s eye.

“Oh, look!” she said as we walked out the door, “the Robinsons are screening in their porch. We should do that so we can sit outside and not be bothered by mosquitoes.” ($4,200) As we circled the block she noticed that the Medcalfs had a fully enclosed glass sunroom. “That’s even better, Dick. We could even sit out there in the winter.” ($6,700) A couple of blocks later…

They have an automatic sprinkler system.” ($3,400) We were almost back to our house when she noticed that the Jamesons were putting in a rock garden with a fountain. “I’ve always wanted a fountain.” ($1,200 plus high maintenance costs.)

By the time we got home, I was feeling broke. We went out on the deck to enjoy a glass of wine, but Mary Ellen was still in home im-

provement mode. She eyed our gas grill, which is about 20 years old. “We are probably going to have to buy a new one next spring ($350), and we better have this deck stained pretty soon. ($1,100) She also noticed two large dead trees that need to be cut down. ($3,000) She was silent for a few minutes, so I thought the spending spree was over. Yes, things were looking up. But then she looked up: “I’d love to have a ceiling fan out here on the back porch.” ($179 plus installation) We’re not going to buy most of those things. Mary Ellen is actually quite frugal but enjoys dreaming.

Next June is our 40th wedding anniversary and I suggested we go to Spain and Portugal in the spring, to celebrate.

“Can we afford it?” she asked.

“Yes! It’s cheaper than going for a walk.”

‘The heart of Weatherford’

THE PORTAL TO TEXAS HISTORY

Longtime residents recall vibrant square of their youth The Parker County Courthouse square was extremely different back in the day.

Little did I realize just how different until I began interviewing a few lifetime residents. These folks, having been born in the 1930s, remember lives centered around the town square.

On Saturdays, local residents gathered, some evenings until 9 p.m.

The lay of the sidewalks and streets allowed for a large lawn around the courthouse.

“Lots of people worked in the downtown area, so several of the businesses were service businesses for those people and their families,” shared Leonard Peters.

by Debbie Arwood stores, four grocery stores and five drug stores positioned around the square. One in particular, named Corcanges, had a soda fountain. It was located next to J. C. Penney Company.

Everyone I spoke with commented on the unique payment system at the Penney’s store.

Bookkeeping was tended to in the upstairs mezzanine. All payments were sent up in a small canister attached to a line and announced by the ringing of a bell. The next bell would be your change/re-

ceipt returning in the same manner. This building, known as the Kuteman-Hopkins Building, housed Corcanges, J. C. Penney Company and three additional businesses. All businesses were destroyed by fire in 1951.

Believe it or not, at one time there were three theaters on the town square. On the east side was the Plaza. Some will remember this as being the same location as the Weatherford Downtown Theater in later years. You may also remember Roberta’s Hallmark.

Well, Roberta Jones began her business training selling popcorn in her dad’s theater. Having done a fine job, she was later promoted to ticket sales.

The other two theaters were

side-by-side in the northwest quadrant. The Palace Theater ran the latest and newest films and offered concessions in the entry.

“Sure wish I had some of Mr. Browder’s Spanish roasted peanuts today,” Leonard commented.

“I will never forget seeing Gone with the Wind for the first time in that theater.”

“My first date was to the Palace Theater,” shared Corky Hyatt. “I was 17 and Momma had to sneak me out of the house ‘cause Daddy would not let me date.”

Something very unusual about the Palace – it was also home to Dorothy Watts’ Jewelry Store.

“That’s right,” Leonard said.

space in one front corner.”

Theater number three – welcome to the Princess Theater. If you loved “shoot-em-up-ride-em-up” reruns, this was the place for you.

Mary Nell McConathy commented, “Saturdays, Daddy would shop and run all his errands on the square after he dropped us kiddos off at the picture show, and we would watch Gene Autry – again!”

All the interviewees remembered nickel hamburgers at Peters’ Hamburgers. Leonard Peters just happens to be the late owner’s nephew.

Leonard’s mother worked there also. On Saturday mornings, he would walk nearly two miles from home to the Courthouse Square.

“It was just a fun place to be,” he said. At about nine years of age, Leonard was free to run – and he would.

“I liked Carter Ivy Hardware just around the corner on North Main,” he said. “Oh, and every Saturday I would visit Duke & Ayers to see the new toys. They were always getting in new ones.”

Duke & Ayers Store must have been the hot spot to work. Nearly everyone knew someone who worked there. Wages averaged 2527 cents per hour.

Leonard also remembers having to add the LY prefix to reach the operator – probably due to increases in telephone calls. Downstairs housed Texas Power and Light Electric Company.

“It was not until the late 40s or early 50s that the City of Weatherford took over the electric service in our area,” commented Leonard.

The only corner, seemingly without change, is in the northeast section of the square.

Davis City Pharmacy provided compounding necessary for medicines, as well as over the counter medicines. Sounds like there has also always been some sort of food establishment under roof also.

set on a beautiful white terrazzo floor.” She is niece to the late owner and recalls Charlie Simmons shining shoes in her uncle’s barber shop.

Mary Jo also commented on Halloween around the square, “There were no carnivals or fall festivals back then, so we all would gather on the lawn ‘round the square.

Businesses would portion out candy. I remember losing a favorite yellow sweater because someone put lipstick all over it one Halloween.”

A bandstand once stood on

the Southwest corner. On Friday nights, the Weatherford High School Band would play for families who had gathered after work and school. This ended in the early 40s.

I suggest you take a stroll one evening soon. As you recall your own time around the square, listen carefully. You may well hear the echo of the WHS Band as the theme song carries lightly on the wind just for you – “There’s a school down in Texas….”

If you have had any level of curiosity about how human beings work, and paid attention to your own life and need, you would probably agree that everyone wants to be heard. The loud table in the restaurant testifies to this as everyone is talking over each other. The basic rule of raising your hand in the classroom gives witness to this fact. Everyone wants to be heard.

Reverse the statement, however, and it means everyone wants to speak. The problem seems to be that there are few who really want to listen. In scripture, I love the Letter of James for the clear conversation about living a holy life, but his words can be a hard pill to swallow. He is best known for James 2:18-19 when James speaks about faith without deeds. In essence, he is saying that what we believe should affect the way we live. Immediately following his conversation in ch.2 is a section on taming the tongue. James says that the tongue is powerful. It’s like a bit in mouth of horse which controls the great animal, or the small rudder of a ship that can steer something so massive, or a simple spark that can create huge forest fire. James is clarifying his statement in 1:19 - “be quick to listen and slow to speak.” Too often we lose our ability to bless people by speaking too much and neglecting the simple but profound ministry of listening.

Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly times when everyone just needs to talk things out. I would venture to say, however, that most of us do a lot more talking than listening. I have noticed in my own life that, when I am a better listener, I tend to have greater capacity to care for and love others. I think it is because listening to a person is an act of putting their needs ahead of ours for the moment. And when we can do that we begin to see how much bigger the world is outside of us. The great news is that listening doesn’t require agreement, it just requires a heart to serve someone and love them enough to hear what they are saying. I wonder what our world would be like if we were able to listen more than we speak.

Gengler, quilters prepare for upcoming quilt auction

by Kay Burleson Quilter’s Guild of Parker County Nancy Gengler is a traditional quilter with a modern twist. Mixing colors and designs, she creates quilts to delight the eye.

She began sewing years ago but focused on quilting with encouragement from her mother and friends. After moving to Weatherford almost two years ago, Nancy joined the Quilters Guild of Parker County. As one of the chairs of the upcoming quilt auction on Sept. 21, Nancy is busy with preparations.

She likes being a member of the “Nu-Bees” and “Bluebonnet Bee” groups, where the quilters share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other. Nancy says the personal relationships and camaraderie of the groups is her favorite part.

Turquoise and greens are go-to colors and often found in her quilts.

The art of longarm quilting is Nancy’s true love and where she devotes the most time. When asked how she chooses designs for the quilting, Nancy relates “…by what the quilt says to me.” That is true quilt whisperer talent.

Nancy and her husband were drawn to the historic area near downtown, where they found a lovely old home to purchase. Now retired, Nancy spends a lot of enjoyable time gardening. Nancy also volunteers with her church in a program to give food and clothing to underprivileged children.

‘Old Ephraim’ November 27, 1867 Eleven miles northwest of Weatherford, Texas Sixteen-year-old Yancey Travers’ hands were shaking as he raised his rifle.

With only this one shot Yancey had to make his kill, for if he missed, it was all over for the Travers family.

Yancey had to beat Old Ephraim in getting off the first shot, for Ephraim was known all over Park-

er County, Texas as a man who never missed.

Ephraim had lost his only son in the Battle of Vicksburg, and his wife had died shortly thereafter from cancer.

No one could ever doubt Ephraim’s love for his wife. He had tended to her every need for months on end until the cancer finally took her away to heaven.

Some said the loss of Ephraim’s beloved wife had driven him insane and Yancey had to admit it might be true, but he figured the old man was just lonely . . . until now.

His eyes remained fixed on Ephraim as his adversary rammed home his patch and musket ball.

Yancey’s moment of truth was at hand, and he pushed the stock of his .44 caliber Henry rifle firmly into his shoulder.

He took a deep breath and said

something to his target that Old Ephraim couldn’t quite make out.

Taking another deep breath, Yancey quickly aimed and pulled the trigger.

A hundred feet away from behind a log the old tom turkey’s head exploded and he was flopping all over the place.

Letting out a whoop of victory, Yancey ran to claim his prize. As he ran, he was constantly looking back to keep an eye on Ephraim.

Yancey took hold of the turkey’s feet and proudly carried his prize to where his beloved Christine waited.

Old Ephraim walked up, slammed his hat down on the ground and demanded; “Boy, how did you know that turkey was going to raise his head up just as you pulled the trigger?”

“Oh, I just lied to that old turkey an’ told’im I had a bunch of good

looking hen turkeys. Wal, that ol’ turkey just naturally had to raise up his head an’ see if I was telling the truth.”

Laying my turkey in the bed of the buckboard, I climbed up and sat down beside Christine.

I took up the reins and looked at the saddened old man with the downcast eyes.

“Mister Ephraim, I reckon me an’ Christine, along with the rest of my family would be much obliged if you would come over tomorrow and spend Thanksgiving Day with us.

I watched as a beautiful smile lit up a lonely old man’s face.

Fall gardening tips for Parker County We have three of the finest months for North Texas Gardening staring us right in the eyes. I’m going to spend a little time outlining things you’ll want to plan to get done.

Plant: n Landscape plants. This is the best time of the year to plant trees and shrubs (except those types known to be tender to winter cold in our area). Planting now gives them the longest possible time to establish before next summer’s hot weather. Nurseries also have good supplies of large, well-rooted plants. n Spring wildflowers. Nature sows them now.

You should, too.

Plant them into beds or vacant areas where they won’t have to compete with turfgrass. Scuff the soil lightly, and keep them moist until they establish and start growing. n Dig and divide spring-flowering perennials in mid-fall. Buy spring-flowering bulbs as they become available in nurseries, but buy the best bulbs of types that will establish and come back year after year. Do your homework ahead of time.

Prune: n Dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs while you can easily tell which need to be removed. n Oaks can be pruned safely from now through mid-February.

Seal all cuts with pruning paint

anytime you trim oaks. n Tidy up perennial beds by removing seedheads and dried flowers and foliage.

Fertilize: n Turf, including St. Augustine, bermuda and zoysia with all-nitrogen food with upwards of half that nitrogen in slow-release form.

Avoid high-phosphorus foods, as most Texas soils already contain excessive, even harmful amounts of it. n Patio pots and hanging baskets with water-soluble, completeand-balanced fertilizer each time that you water them to keep them healthy and vigorous. n Last call for applying iron to correct chlorosis (yellowed

Timely Tips

On the Lookout: n Stinging caterpillars started showing up early this year and they’re still likely to be in fallen leaves, on hollies and oaks. Don’t touch any caterpillar. Become familiar with the larval forms of asps, Io moths, Hagg moths and others and avoid them or treat them with Bacillus thuringiensis. n Cabbage loopers feed on cabbage, broccoli, kale and other members of the cole family voraciously. Apply B.t. to stop them.

n Plant of the Month: Oxblood Lilies Also called “schoolhouse lily” because of its flowering time near the old Labor Day start-up of school in the fall. (Remember those days?) It seems to pop out of nowhere with its foot-tall clusters of cherry-red blooms that resemble small amaryllis atop slender stalks. The leaves emerge after the blooms and persist all winter and into mid-spring.

I have a couple of hundred oxblood lilies in my landscape, many of which I’ve been growing 35 years or longer. They’ve established into big clumps, and when they bloom each fall it tells me that the seasons are about to make a dramatic change. In recent years my bulbs have put up two and even three rounds of flowers in rapid succession over a 5-week period.

better nurseries and through online mailorder sources. They’re somewhat expensive, however. If you have a friend who’s willing to share, that’s a better way to go when you can. May through early August is the best time to dig and transplant.

n Frequently Asked Question “Why am I losing post oaks suddenly? It’s been three of my biggest trees.”

Post oaks (Quercus stellata) are highly intolerant of human invasion. When we move in and start building, moving soil, cutting utility lines, watering and feeding, we can count on losing trees. They are very temperamental to any disturbance, which is why you never see them sold in nurseries. The loss usu-

ally shows up a 1-5 years after the changes are in place and there’s not much to do to turn them around.

If you’re planning new construction, have a certified arborist working alongside you. If you’ve already lost post oaks, consider replacing them with bur oaks. They have a similar look. They’re relatively quick growing, and they’re very durable.
