Dale and Pam Fry are founding members of Parker County Cruisers, which formed almost 30 years ago. They have been instrumental to the organization and have planned events and promoted the club for years.

Parker County Cruisers plan annual show benefitting charities Parker County Cruisers’ Fall Fling is more than an opportunity for classic car enthusiasts to show off their wheels. They also show their big hearts.

You could say helping area nonprofits has been the project’s driving force.

Six years ago, club members Jackie Collins and Bob Glenn sought a venue to raise money for local charities. Through the hard work of PCC members, such as the late Morris Stewart, the show has become a great success.

“It actually began as a spring event,” said club member Beth Collins, wife of former PCC president Jackie Collins, “but after getting rained out two years in a row, it was

changed to September. The results have been amazing!”

Beth says as many as 250 vehicles attend and typically raise over $10,000 for local charities. Previous beneficiaries include Center of Hope, Manna, Grace House, Community Caring Center and Freedom House. They couldn’t do it without community support, Beth said, including local business owners, who step up to provide sponsorships.

“The city has done a magnificent job of improving the park,” said Beth. “New rest rooms, wide sidewalks, food truck area, landscaping, and pavement combine to make a pleasant experience.”

If you’re interested in joining classic show owners from all over the state, you can register your own vehicle for only $20 from 9 a.m. to noon on the day of the show. The award presentation will take place around 2:30 p.m.

Members of the Parker County Cruisers aren’t eligible to win prizes at the Fall Fling, but their restored

cars will be on display.

Best in Show wins $200. There’s also a Car Club Participation Award of $500. Other categories include Best Paint, Best Engine and Best Interior, all of which offer a $100 prize. T-shirts, trophies and plaques will also be awarded.

Parker County Cruisers is a non-profit organization that meets the third Tuesday of each month.

Owning a classic car or hot rod is not required.

“It’s not having old cars to show that makes the club,” added longtime member Pam Fry. “It’s the friendship you develop with the group as well as the people you

meet.”

Club members go out to dinner frequently and sometimes meet up with other car clubs in the area.

Local office gives older workers new skills, opportunities

Patricia Buschman is 65 years old. Like many Americans, she’s discovered there is no magical retirement age - or in some cases, no retirement age at all. Riding off into the sunset of life has turned into driving to work another day.

Buschman is not unique. She, like many elderly Americans, does not have a choice. Challenges such as hikes in the Social Security retirement age, a diving savings rate, mounting personal debt, and the move away from pensions once provided by employers have made retirement much different and much more difficult than it was 40 and 50 years ago.

But Patricia, who lives between Weatherford and Springtown, isn’t complaining. In fact, she’s thankful for the opportunity provided to her and other senior citizens by MET, Inc. (Motivational Education and Training), a national nonprofit organization with offices in Weatherford.

MET has taken over the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP, operated under the Title V of the Older Americans Act. They hire participants age 55 and older at federal minimum wage ($7.25 per hour) and pay for their workman’s compensation insurance while placing them at companies and agencies. In exchange for the free labor, the company/agency agrees to train participants for the job.

All participants work a minimum of 20 hours per week with a maximum of 29.

“Being out of the workforce for eight years, where I did administrative/clerical work, no one wanted to hire me. Plus my age, while they won’t tell you that, was a deterrent,” Patricia said. “I started out at Workforce Solutions in Weatherford in March, then moved here to the local MET office. I have learned to do payroll input, enrollment paperwork which includes computing income to see if the prospective participant is qualified, along with a whole host of other officerelated duties that include learning new technology.

“It’s been a real positive experience and I am happy for this opportunity, not only to learn, but to help other seniors have a better chance at getting new skills and jobs.”

In fact, most seniors who are re-entering or staying in the workforce are good at what they do.

They just need the chance to show it, and there are plenty of ways senior citizens can still be a viable part of the working community, said Tiffany Marcum, SCSEP program specialist in Weatherford.

“I have found that administrative, clerical and customer service jobs seem to be the most prevalent for seniors locally,” Tiffany said.

Tiffany said most senior citizens work for a variety of reasons, not the least being needing the income. However, the list of reasons also includes

being bored at home, social interaction, keeping skills/learning new skills.

Sharon Thompson, 61, previously worked in the stocking department of a retail store. She retired at age 57 - or so she thought. However, returning to the workforce was a little unnerving after four years, she said. Now, she also works in the local MET office.

“This gave me an opportunity to learn skills I didn’t have before. I knew nothing about computers previously,” she said. “Also, living by myself, the confidence I’m getting here helps so much. It can be scary on your own as a senior.”

Joyce Crain, 85, works at the local library in Winters, which operates through the same MET regional offices as Parker County. She entered the program in January of 2015 after a long absence from the workforce. She simply did not have enough money to make ends meet otherwise.

“First, I was at a loss, not working out in the public and being connected to the outside world.

Second, I needed the income to just exist, and the 20 hours each week at minimum wage has helped me tremendously to remain independent,” Joyce said.

Joyce is also good at her job as the public relations representative. She is the liaison between the library and the media with weekly articles for the newspaper, has developed a monthly program

for the library, set up a coffee bar, created a children’s summer reading program, helps with fundraising, and even grant requests.

The greatest benefits for seniors and the community that come from working seniors, Marcum said, include poverty reduction, health care cost reduction, loss of wage/time reduction due to family/friends having to care for the elderly, more availability to other demographics of social services due to less poverty, more income being spent locally, and keeping the community healthier.

National statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that more than one in five seniors age 65 or older are either still in or re-entering the workforce. For ages 55-64 that number increases to over 60 percent.

Also, percentage-wise, seniors who are working longer are seeing their incomes rise more rapidly than younger workers. The Census Bureau reported that workers over age 65 have seen their monthly incomes increase over 80 percent between 1994-2015 when adjusted for inflation, compared to just 32 percent for those ages 35-54. Every penny is needed, as most expenses have increased greatly from what they were back then, many even tripling or more.

Jeanie Phillips, 63, of Weatherford, was forced to return to work even though she had worked in the Odessa School District maintenance department for 18 years and built up a retirement fund. That, along with her Social Security, she thought, would be enough to give her a nice retirement.

She was wrong. Fortunately, Marcum saw her strengths and put her to work.

“Sadly, by the time Social Security applies what they call a windfall act and an offset act, it reduced my check by over $500 a month,” she said. “But how do you get back in? I just had to wade back in the water and get back to work.”

However, while more and more seniors are working nationwide, there is still a problem that has to be conquered, Marcum said.

“Age. Simply age,” she said. “Most employers will not consider many applicants simply based on their age, regardless of education, experience, or skill level.”

The problem is being mastered, she believes, albeit not as quickly as she and many others would like. Nonetheless, she does say progress is being made.

“I believe they are slowly becoming more cooperative. However, I believe a program such as the one I work for, SCSEP, opens a multitude of doors and opportunities,” she said.

Some employers, including the federal government, now have phased retirement programs to allow employees to work part-time at the end of their careers.

Advocacy groups are also working to convince employers that older employees are worth keeping around, battling perceptions that they cannot keep up with new technology or younger co-workers.

They are also advising older employees to get more training, such as that offered through SCSEP. “My success story is not about a particular participant or a particular county. My story is about the level of success achieved by all participants throughout my counties,” Patricia Robison of MET/SCSEP said. “They have reached higher levels of self-esteem, self-confidence, and more than that they have become more aware of their community and how they can better serve it and themselves using the skills and training they have received.”

Marcum called Katy Woodruff, of Comanche, a heroine. She was experiencing some extremely tough times in her life and she needed a distraction (or coping mechanism) when she entered the SCSEP system. She had also been diagnosed with cancer.

“At times it was a struggle for her just to get out of bed and report to her host agency, but she was determined.

Seeing this, her supervisors were willing to be flexible with doctor appointments and her scheduled examining hours,” Marcum said. “There were times when a leave of absence had to be taken for recovery from certain health-involved situations. It was at those times she made it through with determination and perseverance.”

Katy always managed to come back fighting, setting an example for others and boosting her own self-confidence.

“Katy is now a cancer survivor and she is dearly missed by her host agency supervisors, and those she helped along the way,” Marcum said. “Her hard work is greatly appreciated and admired. This is truly a success story worthy to be told.”

Not only do seniors need to work longer or return to work in this age, statistics show the economy needs them to do such. To put it simply, they are contributing to the nation’s finances instead of withdrawing.

Another plus to hiring senior citizens is they are less likely to move from job to job, as statistics show Millennials are prone to do.

“This has shown the capabilities of the seniors to the workforce,” Marcum said. “And by word of mouth the news is starting to spread of just how beneficial these seniors and this program can be.”

Watch for gorgeous autumn colors soon August is a turning point toward the fall. Fall flowers and vegetables.

Fall hues just appearing. Shorter evenings and (we hope!) cooling temperatures making for better gardening now or soon in the future.

Plant: n Marigolds, zinnias, celosias mid-August from 4-inch pots. Select plants that do not yet have open flowers for best results. n Cole crops mid- to late in month, including broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower, from started transplants. n Leafy and root vegetables late in month. n New turfgrass by end of month if at all possible. Water once or twice daily to get it established. n Wildflower seeds into lightly tilled soil late in month. Don’t plant where they’ll compete with turfgrass, and do not plant in highly improved garden soil. Full sun is best.

Prune: n Remove dead and damaged branches from shrubs and trees.

Last winter and this summer have taken their tolls on our plants. n Tidy up perennial and annual beds by deadheading old flower stalks and seedheads. n Trim Salvia greggii and bush roses by one-third to stimulate fall regrowth and bloom. Remove roses infected with fatal rose rosette virus that has plagued the Metroplex for the past 6-7 years. See www.neilsperry.com if you are unfamiliar with this disease.

Fertilize: n Apply all-nitrogen food to bermuda turf to keep it vigorous and green. Wait to feed St. Augustine until early September, however, to lessen the chance of gray leaf spot outbreak.

n Time is running out for this season to apply iron along with a sulfur soil-acidifier to correct iron chlorosis. Likely candidates: azaleas, gardenias, dogwoods, fringeflowers, wisterias and ligustrums. n High-nitrogen, water-soluble food to patio pots and hanging baskets to keep them active rest of season. Repeat weekly.

On the Lookout: n Chinch bugs have been horrible in St. Augustine this summer. Watch for dry areas that do not respond to irrigation, always in the hottest, sunniest parts of your yard. You will have to get on all fours when it’s really hot to find them. Part the grass in a declining area (not in dead grass) and look for BB-sized black insects with irregular white diamonds to be flitting around like fleas. Your nurseryman or hardware dealer will have labeled products for their control. n Pecans falling prematurely are infected with pecan scab. There is nothing you can do about it at this point. Next year, begin your spray program in late spring, and include a labeled fungicide. Pecans falling this early will be of no value. n Yellowed leaves and browned leaf margins on trees and shrubs point to moisture stress. It can be brought on by many things such as just letting the plants get too dry, but also including mechanical injury, too much fertilizer, too much sunlight, reflective sun and heat, root damage due to transplanting and trunk damage due to sunscald.

n Sperry’s Plant of the Month: Fall Crocus I’m a sucker for yellow flowers with a perky green hue to them, and this little beauty of autumn is just such a jewel. You rarely see it in stores, and it’s uncommon in landscapes (except in older neighborhoods), but it’s really worth the hunt. n Grows to 5 to 6 inches tall. n Leaves are short, glossy and dark green. Emerge in fall and into the winter.

n Flowers pop out of nowhere to appear in early fall. n Bright yellow in masses, lasting for up to two weeks. n Perfect in the front of a perennial border. n Do well in part shade. Plant where they can remain undisturbed for many years. n May be in local independent nurseries, but more common from online bulb specialty dealers.

n Readers Ask “I bought a nice red oak tree three years ago, and now its trunk has lost its bark and is full of holes. Can I save the tree?”

Your tree apparently wasn’t protected from the south or west sun by paper tree wrap after it was planted. What you’re seeing is the aftermath of sunscald brought on by the intense heat of the summer sun shining down on the exposed bark. Before coming into your yard, the tree had been grown in nurs-

ery settings where adjacent trees shaded its trunk. Bark on Shumard red oaks, chinquapin oaks and even Chinese pistachios is so thin that this happens when they’re exposed to the sun during their first couple of years. The bark splits and borers suddenly have easy access to the wood of the trunk. If they planted and guaranteed the tree for you, your nursery should have done that for you. It’s inexpensive, and it makes a huge difference.

Harper recognized by WAA Jill Harper has loved doing crafts and “doodling” all her life, but it wasn’t until she retired in 2015 that she began taking art classes.

“I began to search for things to fill my time,” said Harper. “One day while wandering around downtown Weatherford, I entered the Weatherford Firehouse Art Gallery, where I met Rosalie Kobetich.”

The chance meeting convinced Harper to go from doodling to studying graphite drawing. After two years under Kobetich’s direction, she picked up a watercolor class taught by Kathy Cunning.

“I’ve only been doing watercolor for about 10 months and this is my fourth finished painting,” she said, while admitting some ended up in the recycle bin.

“Around the time I began watercolor, I joined the Weatherford Art Association,” she said. “This organization is filled with so much inspiration and so many mentors,

Harper was recently chosen as the artist for the month by Weatherford Art Association for piece titled “Thoughtful.” It was based on a photograph taken at the zoo by Harper’s friend Kerry Newhart.

The painting became even more meaningful after Koko, the famous Solution to Sudoku: ape who mastered sign language in California, passed away in June.

Sharpes Grocery was located in the southwest quadrant of the Weatherford square in the 1950s and 1960s. Note the Pythian Knight who still stands guard at the location, now home to Bennett’s Office Supply. The building was constructed around the turn of the century by the Knights of Pythias, a fraternal order established during the Civil War, which met on the top floor and rented the bottom floor to various merchants. The organization, of course, went on to build the Texas Pythian Home on Bankhead Highway in 1909. There are former Pythian meeting lodges all over the nation, but most have either been renovated or have fallen into serious disrepair. The Bennett Family in Mineral Wells has proudly owned the building for many years. Although the second floor is no longer available to tour, we are told that precious artifacts remain, including an old safe, ledger and photos.

Ruthenberg chairs ‘Quilts in Bloom’ show Sept. 21-22

by Paula Hunt Parker County Quilter's Guild September will be a busy month for Anita Ruthenberg. As chairperson of the Quilt Show committee she will be gearing up for the big event on September 21 and 22.

Anita has held many positions in the guild since joining in 2001, but this is her first experience to share to quilt show.

Anita’s first exposure to quilting was watching her mother quilt during the long, cold Illinois winters of her childhood. Her mother used cardboard templates drawn out on cereal boxes and cut out the fabric pieces with scissors. Hand piecing was the technique favored by her mother. Watching all the hard work she put into the quilts convinced Anita that quilting was too much work and not for her.

It wasn’t until years later, watching an Eleanor Burns “Quilt In a Day” program while recovering from surgery, that she decided the modern way of quilting looked like much less work. Her first quilt was a Sunshine and Shadow pattern following Burn’s instructions. After joining the Quilter’s Quilt of Parker

County in 2001, quilting became an ongoing part of her life.

Today, many of her quilts are of her own design and use bright, vivid colors, such as purple, blue, red, and pink. However, she will tell you that her favorite color is scrappy. In fact, she has presented her program “My Favorite Color is Scrappy” to area guilds.

After retiring from her position as a revenue accountant with Conoco Phillips in 2013, she had much more time to devote to quilting. Anita purchased a house with room for a quilting studio. Her plan was to be able to invite her quilting friends to sew with her. Currently there are three quilting bees that meet and sew in her studio -- Material Girls, Mod Squad and Green Beans. Green Beans? It makes more sense who you know that this is a group of ladies who are “green” as in new to quilting. Anita has a love of teaching new quilters and this group was formed as she met people in the bee, or even in Walmart, and learned that they needed a little help along the path of their quilting journey. She generously shares her time, knowledge and even her fabric stash with her

Anita is a member of four bees in addition to the three that meet at her home. “Bees are the backbone of the guild,” said Anita. “It is the means to meet and make friends with other quilters, and to learn our craft. Great things can be accomplished by small groups of committed people. The bees are the strength and force of our guild.”

In addition to devoting time to quilting, Anita spends time tending to her large plant collection. She

has a collection of beautiful orchids, as well as a patio filled with a variety of plants.

One of the joys of Anita’s life is a little dog named Henry, which she rescued from the animal shelter while working there as a volunteer.

Henry is also a member of the bees that meet at her home. He is the official greeter.

You will see several of Anita’s quilts at the show on Sept. 21-22 at North Side Baptist Church. If you spot her, take time to say hello.

They even asked for a phone number “so we can talk.”

Of course, she told them she was not interested.

A friend of hers got such a call.

Within minutes, he told her a sad story about his son in jail and asked if she could send him $250.

If you enjoy multi-player games on your phone, don’t play with strangers or give out any personal data to new friends. Just hang up.

Medicare Insurance Joyce Risenhoover turns 90 Solutions

Joyce Risenhoover with her family at her 90th birthday celebration

Joyce Risenhoover of Weatherford celebrated her 90th birthday on Aug. 12.

A party was hosted by her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. David and Brenda George of Weatherford, where Joyce was surprised to see many old friends.

Joyce was born in Clarksville to Tom and Lois Golden in 1928 but attended school mostly in Oklahoma. She met her husband, Lee Roy Kight, in the first grade. She says she knew immediately that she liked him.

They got married in 1946 on the Parker County courthouse steps right after Lee Roy got out of the service. The couple went on to have three daughters, Brenda, Kathy and Debra.

“We had so many good times,” she said. “My kids were really good kids. We had lots of fun.”

After Lee Roy passed away, Joyce married Jim Risenhoover in 1968.

At that time, she retired from her job as a church secretary.

She was a dental assistant in her younger years, but she also worked in bookkeeping and was a beauty consultant for Eckerd and CVS

She was 83 when she retired for the last time. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time playing golf and traveling. She’s been to Israel, Turkey, Italy, Germany and Cabo San Lucas with her family.

“I like going to different towns and trying things I’ve never done before,” she said.

One hobby she still enjoys daily is reading. She has a bookcase full of Louis L’Amour books, and she also recommends the book she’s currently reading titled, “Women’s Diaries of the Westward Journey”

Joyce shared her keys to a long life: “Eat good, get your rest, make lots of friends and read good books.”

The Case of the Missing Statue There are few indisputable facts to present in the Case of the Missing Statue, but it’s safe to say the well-meaning resident of Neverland stood proudly in Cherry Park for at least a decade.

Rhonda Bigham Penner recalls the day the statue was installed back in the 1960s. That was the day she was named Miss Peter Pan and won a year’s supply of peanut butter. But, like most other residents, Penner can only guess what happened to the fiberglass statue in the years that followed.

The history and possible location of the sculpture is frequently debated on Facebook. There are speculations aplenty. Many remember seeing it in the park as late as the 1980s -- often in an undignified state.

It is said the statue’s outstretched hand often held an empty beer can and possibly a firecracker on occasion, which would explain the damaged fingers.

Despite the alleged abuse, many claim to have treasured the statue -- until she simply vanished.

Was she stolen by a rival football team and thrown into Lake Weatherford, only to be recovered and then abducted again? Was she weather beaten and removed for

The Peter Pan statue that once stood in Cherry Park safety reasons? Did she simply return to Neverland? There seem to be no irrefutable answers.

One thing’s for certain — Mary Martin was not a fan of the statue. In fact, Weatherford resident Sherry O. Watters says Martin asked the city to remove it from the park. Martin was once quoted in the newspaper as saying she felt the statue “did not represent her portrayal of Peter Pan.” Apparently, the gift from Peter Pan Peanut Butter Company, like many gifts, fell short of expectations.
