Keeping busy The holidays are fast approaching and it’s safe to say Weatherford resident Glenna Wooten has already taken care of most of the family and friends on her Christmas list.

“I did 52 animal paintings last year, and I gave them away to family members and friends.”

In addition to visual art, Mrs. Wooten has spent the last few months learning to play the piano. Her practice sessions can be heard by several nearby residents at Hilltop Park Rehabilitation and Care Center.

Neighbor Ruby Peacock said, while the piano key strokes are a “work in progress,” the music is not loud and she can’t wait until Glenna learns Amazing Grace.

Larry Ingle publishes a monthly newsletter at a local assisted living facility.

Though Larry spent most of his career in advertising and marketing (24 years) at two daily newspapers in Texas, the desire to be artistically and entertainingly creative always filled his heart. This, along with a secret dream of becoming a violin/fiddle player and hard rock/metal music singer, Larry joked.

Fresh out of college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Larry got an opportunity to work for The Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel in 1974.

“I learned a lot about the daily newspaper business from selling ad space to operating the very large newspaper-size camera to being able to use my art talent and skill to draw original spec ads and other advertisements,” he said. “It was a time in my life of providing for my growing family

of a daughter and three sons.”

Of course, his children are all grown now, and he is the proud grandparent of four.

After leaving Nacogdoches, Larry spent the next 21 years at the Lufkin Daily News, where he expanded his skills by reviewing Christian-authored books and Christian concerts.

Now, Larry is getting to do what he always wanted, put out his own publication, one that focuses on his friends and neighbors, one that he hopes enlightens someone’s day when they get a copy.

“I want the ‘Letter’ to be informative and interesting. Especially in this COVID-19 era of uncertainty I want the ‘Letter’ to be a beacon of positive ideas which will help people cope a little better or laugh a little,” he said.

Pioneer Heritage Fest scheduled for Oct. 3 The annual Pioneer Heritage Festival at Doss Heritage and Culture Center has been split into a two-part event to allow for more people while still following social distancing guidelines.

Barbara Stagner Parker County Women’s and Newcomers’ Club Hoopla: The Parker County Women’s and Newcomers’ Club has more than 200 members who, until recently, were unable to get together in person due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As the club’s Sunshine and Shadows coordinator during that time, you shared both good and bad news with club members via email. While many would have found it difficult to remain positive during these times, you’ve managed to uplift members.

Where do you draw your strength from during these troubled times?

Barbara: The ladies in the Parker County Women’s and Newcomers’ Club are like sisters to me. I wanted all of us to stay in touch, especially for those who were ill, had surgery or a death in their family and needed our prayers. We have several members who live alone and some with no family, and it was important to me that they know someone cares for them – their “sisters” in the club. If they needed help, we were here for them. My strength comes from family. I know they are willing and able to help me if I need them. I wanted my sisters to have that same feeling.

Hoopla: We hear you shared a recipe or two with members. Which got the most feedback and will you share it with our readers?

Barbara: I love sharing my recipes, and we were all doing more cooking

at home as it was not safe to eat out in restaurants. I love a recipe that is fast and easy to make. I received the best feedback from the Impossible Coconut Pie, which makes its own crust.

IMPOSSIBLE COCONUT PIE 4 eggs 2 cups milk 1 cup coconut 1/2 stick butter 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup Bisquick 1 tsp. vanilla Mix ingredients with blender or mixer. Pour in a buttered pie pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

Hoopla: After retiring as director of human resources at Palo Pinto General Hospital after 29 years, you volunteered as a court-appointed special advocate for seven years -and even received the first Judge Ray CASA Advocates Award in 2012. Tell us a little bit about that organization and the importance of volunteering within your community.

Barbara: Volunteering for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. As a CASA, you act as an advocate for an abused and/or neglected child who is going through the court system and has been removed from his or her abusive

Barbara Stagner home and placed in foster care. They need a voice to speak up for them in court so they can have a safe and stable forever home. Right now we have 305 children in Parker County who are in the foster system and each one could use a CASA’s care. I feel it’s important to volunteer in the community, as it’s an opportunity for people to help meet local needs. It’s amazing what we can all accomplish together if we’re each willing to give a little bit

of our time.

Hoopla: When all safety restrictions are lifted and it’s deemed safe to resume life as we once knew it, what’s the first thing you will do?

Barbara: Hug my children, grandchildren and siblings, and have a family get together with lots of food. And, I can’t forget, hugging my “sisters” in the PCWNC. A runner up is eating at my favorite place, Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican food.

Accessing unlockable content for the kingdom of God Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:31 I recently learned a new term from my kids – “unlockable content.” It is a video game term, but it caught my attention. It refers to content that is not accessible unless something is performed by the player to gain access. It makes them faster, stronger, better, or gives them tools that make them gain more points. As Christians, God has given us unlockable content so we can access the great things He has for us.

Sometimes we play it safe and do not unlock this content because it would require extremely brave faith.

What is it that keeps us from accessing our unlockable content? The biggest thing that holds us back is fear.

Moving forward can bring peace, even with not knowing what lies ahead.

Weak faith, doubting, or unbelief will stagnate us and take our peace.

We want to be in control, but trust and faith means we let God be in control. Calling, vision, and purpose go hand in hand and require action for them to be engaged. Even when God lays it in our lap, we have to take the initiative and move forward for them to be activated.

The unlockable content is there for us and the key is faith. Blessings and fulfillment abound when we step out in faith and unlock all the potential God has placed in our lives.

Happy birthday!

Hoopla covergirl Charlene Ball is 90 years old and fabulous! A “come and go” birthday celebration was held for Charlene outside the Weatherford College Doss Center on August 22. Friends and family stopped by to wish Charlene a happy birthday and enjoyed visiting with those they hadn’t seen since the beginning of the pandemic.

Fall in love with these easy dips S’mores Dip

12 ounce bag chocolate chips 10 ounce bag large marshmallows Graham crackers Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread chocolate chips in the bottom of a baking dish or cast iron pan. Top with marshmallows. Bake until chocolate softens and marshmallows are golden brown. Allow dip to cool about 5 minutes before serving with graham crackers.

Cream Cheese Dip

8 ounces cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla Sliced apples Mix first four ingredients in a bowl.

Serve with sliced apples.

Pumpkin Fluff

Tarzan Boy: From loincloth to legend

Some successful actors shy away from discussing their early roles. Sixty-nine-yearold Kurt Russell, who played Tarzan Boy on Gilligan’s Island in the 1965 is not one of them.

In the late 1960s, he signed a 10-year contract with The Walt Disney Company where, according to film historian Robert Osborne, he became the stuGAGE SKIDMORE dio’s top star of Kurt Russell, 2016 the 1970s. As a child, Russell also had small roles in Gunsmoke, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Dennis the Menace, Daniel Boone, and The Virginian.

“When you’re 13 years old and do Gilligan’s Island in a loincloth,” Russell said, “you got to go back to your public school afterwards. I’ll tell you what, you learn how to handle yourself pretty quickly.”

By the time Russell attended a high school class reunion, the loincloth days were all but forgotten by classmates, who were watching him on the big screen. He has starred in blockbuster films, such as Overboard, Silkwood, Forrest Gump and Backdraft.

Google eyes Mary Ellen has me on very short leash due to the virus. I am not allowed to go into grocery stores, play pickleball or even sit indoors with friends to toss back a beer. When I kiss my wife, I have to stand 6 feet away, which is wreaking havoc with my neck.

One way we are remaining socially engaged is every Saturday at 4 p.m. we Facetime with our friends Jane and John Murphy. We start the hour off by asking each other what we all did the past few days — which is usually nothing. Then we discuss which movie to stream for a discussion the following week. Any movie is okay as long as John doesn’t have to pay for it.

I am not very good at following movies and have trouble participating in some of the conversations. John has a PhD in statistics and he told me that 51.7 percent of the time, I have missed the entire point of the flick.

But I did much better than that a few Saturdays back.

Jane: I liked the movie: the characters’ personalities were multi-faceted.

John: The plot was very suspenseful. Lots of surprises. I liked it.

Mary Ellen: Yes, I loved the cinematography, especially the director’s use of tight shots.

Dick: I felt the movie was surprisingly thin on plot, angry at times and disjointed, often wobbling between high-minded outrage and tabloid sensationalism.

Later that evening, Mary Ellen was on my case. “Where did that analysis come from? You are never that insightful. When we watched ‘Titanic,’ you asked me why the captain permitted guests to swim alongside the ship.”

She had a theory. “Do you know

what I think? You looked up the film online and then quoted some egghead from The New Yorker so you could look smart to all of us.”

I told her that was craziest thing I ever heard, which, as you know, is not exactly a denial.

This past Friday night, Mary Ellen walked into my office. I slammed my laptop shut, afraid of being exposed

“What are Humorist you doing?” she screamed. “I sure hope that was porn, and not the Rotten Tomatoes movie review site!”

The next night we watched a classic, “Notorious,” by Alfred Hitchcock.

Our group was pretty high on the movie, but then it was my turn to talk.

“The inclusion of real-life footage and YouTube clips was an interesting idea, but the shooting style was awkward and the movie disgraced its subject, when it should have celebrated this music star.”

“Dick, you Googled the wrong film.

That sounds like the 2009 movie, also called ‘Notorious.’ It’s about a rapper -- not the classic Hitchcock film.”

Mary Ellen was mad at me for continuing to cheat, so I promised to stop.

While we were eating the meal she prepared, she asked how I was enjoying it.

“Your dinner tonight, Mary Ellen, was the best! The entrée was skillfully presented, not upstaged by the appetizers, pastas and vegetables. The dryaged sirloin was impressively tender, living up to the standard set by the smashed fingerling potatoes wearing golden jackets of crisp baked Parmigiano-Reggiano.”

“See?” asked my wife, “Don’t you feel better when what you say comes from your heart?”

Relishing fall Step outside. Take a deep breath of that refreshing air and enjoy gardening to the fullest. This is why we endure summers here in Texas!

Plant: • Daffodil, narcissus, jonquil and grape hyacinth bulbs as soon as you buy them. Tulip and Dutch hyacinth bulbs will need to be pre-chilled in the refrigerator for a minimum of 45 days at 45 degrees.

• Landscape trees and shrubs planted now will have a big head start on getting established before next summer. Watch for closeout sales at nurseries as they get ready for Christmas tree sales.

• Pansies, violas, pinks, snapdragons and other cool season flowering and foliar color plants.

Buy 4-inch potted nursery transplants and set them into well-prepared garden soils.

• Dig and divide iris, daylilies and other spring- and summer-flowering perennials.

• Ryegrass seed for temporary green cover over the winter and early spring.

Fertilize: • Apply a high-quality, all-nitrogen lawn fertilizer to your turfgrass early in the month. Upwards of half of its nitrogen should be in slowrelease form.

• Apply high-nitrogen, water-soluble fertilizer to pansies and other winter color plants soon after planting to get them off to a good start. Repeat each time that you water them.

• Start withholding plant food from pots and hanging baskets you intend to bring indoors over the winter.

Prune: • Dead or damaged tree branches from shade trees before they start losing their leaves. It is much easier to spot those that need to be taken down.

• Keep the lawn and landscape tidy by picking up fallen leaves, twigs and branches. You will lessen the chance of turf diseases developing by keeping leaves off the lawn’s surface.

• Continue mowing the lawn at the recommended height all the way up to the first frost. Some have the mistaken idea that allowing the lawn to grow tall improves its winter hardiness. That is not the case.

On the Lookout: • Scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies and other pests on your patio container plants that you may want to bring indoors for the winter. Treat while they’re still outside. Don’t expose your house plants to them.

• If your bermuda turf suddenly turns brown, and if you have seen birds feeding actively in the lawn, you probably are being visited by army worms. If they are still active, you can spray them with almost any general-purpose organic or inorganic insecticide.

• Fall webworms in pecans, persimmons and other shade trees are unsightly and slightly damaging.

Use a long-handled pole pruner to remove them. Sprays are not especially effective.

n Focus on Houseplants: Crotons These have been some of my favorite houseplants and patio color plants since I was a teenager. They come in all leaf shapes, sizes and colors.

We use them in the fall because traditional fall colors predominate.

We grow them for their striking foliage in combination with mums, pumpkins, Indian corn, and other symbols of autumn.

What you’ll need to know…

• Croton (Codiaeum variegatum var. pictum).

• Native home: Southern India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia.

• Tropical, hardy only to freezing, and not especially happy with temperatures below 40 degrees.

• Height: 5-10 ft.

• Part sun to most sun (protection from intense afternoon sun). Grow by bright window indoors.

• Scale insects and mealybugs are only common pest problems.

• Feed with high-nitrogen, watersoluble fertilizer each time that you water during growing season, monthly in winter.
