Candlelight Tour of Homes set for Dec. 14 The Parker County Heritage Society presents its 38th Home Tour, Saturday, December 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets will be available beginning Nov. 11 at the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, located in the old Santa Fe railroad depot (401 Fort Worth Highway); at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center, 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford; as well as online at www.parkercountyheritagesociety.com.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under and adults over 65. Tickets purchased online can be picked up at the Doss Center on tour day.

“We have such a wide variety of homes on this year’s tour. We also have a historic church, the Parker County Courthouse, Pythian Home, a beautiful garden oasis in

You’ve no doubt admired it from afar, but this year’s Candlelight Tour offers visitors a chance to tour the four-story, 10,000-square feet Queen Anne-style mansion on Palo Pinto Street.

Now known as the Angel’s Nest, the 10-bedroom home was built by C.D. Hartnett in 1896. He lived there for more than two decades. Candice will say all she did was make it available for many people to come and enjoy, to experience the history and legends themselves, and leave with stories to tell their friends.

The columns on the front porch have been replaced with the original round style Hartnett had in place. Candice added quite a few bathrooms, now the place has 10 – one for each bedroom.

This location boasts original stained glass windows, and in one of the rooms is a bed that’s almost 200 years old with handcarved framing.

Transoms throughout help keep the hot air out on the first floor, making it perhaps the coolest place in town – both literally and metaphorically.

“They used to refer to this home as Denver because it was always so cool,” Candice said. “Up here on this hill you always get a nice breeze.”

Four fireplaces warm the house in the winter, one in the parlor, where many folks have gathered over the years for conversation, coffee, or perhaps a warm glass of brandy. The mantels are believed to have been made in Italy. Four sets of 10-foot-tall pocket doors serve as room dividers downstairs. Upstairs, a host of balconies offer beautiful views from the highest point in Parker County.

Room No. 10, the “penthouse,” features several large windows that offer a gorgeous view of downtown, the courthouse, and many more miles.

“If you’re in here and a lightning storm comes through, we don’t charge any extra for the show,” Candice said with a laugh.

And while homes today aren’t accustomed to cellars, the house was built in a time when they were still appreciated. A stairway off the pantry leads to the wine and root cellar.

The many historical photos throughout the home show many have created memories there. Some, it seems, decided to stay to this day, but then Candice understands why.

“We love it here, and we’re glad others love it. We’re a lot more than just a place to stay the night.”

Anxiously, I watched as my father turned off the old dirt county road in his ‘39 Ford pickup onto the lane leading to the old ramshackle ranchhouse where we lived. There in the front yard, my 4-year-old self stood eagerly waiting to see what Poppa had brought me from town.

Usually Poppa would bring me a small sack of Double Bubble gum, Tootsie Rolls, or some other such kind of penny candy. Today, however, he brought something even better -- he brought me a month old pig!

Lil Tommy and I became fast friends, every time I took a step the pig was right behind me. My mom would bring me lunch an’ Lil Tommy and I would relish every morsel of her homemade delicacies.

Down the road a couple of miles from the ranch was Authon, a small town of about 30 people which served the ranchers and farmers of the area. It was one of those blinkyour-eyes-an’-you’ve-missed-it sort of towns consisting only of a cotton gin, a gas station, a blacksmith shop, a general store and a few houses.

The general store was owned and operated by an old gentleman named Arthur Ponds and his wife.

Mr. Ponds was not only my buddy, he was my hero. Every time we went to his store, he would give my sister and me a couple of cookies from a giant glass jar that he kept sitting on the counter beside the register.

Lil Tommy grew until he was getting too big for the screened-in back porch where he and I had been sleeping. With me crying my eyes out, Poppa put my buddy in a rundown hog pen.

Early one morning my Mom was

building a fire under her cast iron wash pot when my little sister came running all excited. “The pig’s out, Mama! He tore up the hog pen and he’s nowhere around.”

My Mom found him munching away on some overripe, slightly sunburned watermelons in the garden.

Mom had me call Lil Tommy to me, but he wasn’t about to budge from all those delicious watermelons. Since that didn’t work, Mom tried to rope him, but that didn’t pan out either. My mom being the pioneer woman she was decided to just grab hold of him and carry him back to the hog pen. She was wore plumb out from chasing that pig.

As she passed the front porch, she climbed up the steps with that pig in her arms and sat down in her

It was at that moment that we heard Arthur Pond’s old Model ‘A’ flatbed truck turn off the road onto our lane. He was on his monthly trip to Weatherford to buy supplies from C.D. Hartnett and Company.

He crossed the creek and came to a stop a few yards from the front of the ranch house. He asked if Mom needed anything while keeping his eyes glued to that pig. Mr. Ponds then gave my sister and me a sack of pink, yellow and white coconut bonbons and went on his way.

When my Poppa got home that night from working in his automotive repair shop, he climbed out of his pickup, looked at Mom an’ started laughing. Mom asked him what was so funny. Grinning, he said, “Arthur Ponds stopped by my garage today an’ said, ‘Clyde, you need to find your woman something do. She ain’t got a dadblamed thing to do out there on that ranch except sit on the front porch an’ rock a pig!’”

The Singing Websters

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Having grown up in a musical family, no one was surprised when John Webster saved up to buy a piano at the age of 13. It wasn’t long before he had taught himself how to play, and by the age of 16 was playing the piano and singing lead in a quartet.

Meanwhile, younger brother Don was serving in local churches as music and youth minister, as well as pastoring.

The brothers traveled extensively through the years, sharing the gospel with their voices, Don largely throughout the United States, while John even made it to Europe, Canada and Cuba.

Then, in 2005, the pair decided to combine their talents, and The Singing Websters was born.

The decision to join forces, like their original decision to enter into the field of gospel music, was a calling, Don said.

“We feel responsible to provide encouragement through our music.

It’s very fulfilling to know that what we do pleases both God and those

who hear us,” he said. “We have had many opportunities to sing at special events, church services and funerals. We feel thankful and humbled by those we minister to in any given circumstance.”

And there have been many circumstances. The Webster Brothers, the first in their family to have their own public ministry (though their parents and siblings also sang), sing in churches, community events and senior communities as well.

You’ve probably seen them perform, but if you haven’t, you’re in luck. They have their own television program called “The Websters Gospel Music Show,” which airs on Saturday mornings at 9:30 on the UA Network. It airs on digital channel 28.2 or can be viewed online at www. uanetwork.tv.

The group sometimes includes members who are “like family” – Elle Gray (baritone/lead) and Kelly Russell (bass). Elle also plays guitar, which the brothers have lauded.

“We are currently in the studio recording our second album, and we will be featured in Branson, this Christmas on the Barbara Fairchild Show,” John said with excitement.

And yes, they do write some of their own music.

“We write at least 30 percent of what we present,” John said.

The group performs locally every chance they get. They most recently

performed at the Ms. Senior Parker County Pageant.

“It’s always a special treat when we can all reunite,” he said. “Watch Facebook and our website for times.”

John and Don have sang separately, and with other individuals and groups, but there’s something special about family harmony.

“We tend to know exactly what the other’s thinking when we sing together,” Don said. “Its definitely special and a unique blessing.”

Are you a gap person? Do you often find yourself caught in the middle of two sides, both sides looking to you for advice or just a person to

vent to? God sometimes uses gap people to build a bridge between two opposing people or sides. It is His desire for us to live in peace and show love and forgiveness to one another, and sometimes He uses others along the way to help us see things more clearly. Maybe you have two friends and they are at odds with each other and both want to talk to you about it. Maybe you are a buffer between one per-

son and the rest of the world. It is an honor to be the person everyone trusts and wants to talk to, but it is a weighty honor for sure.

A gap person is a mediator of sorts at times, and sometimes just a listening ear. When people come to you for advice, they are putting their trust in you and asking for your opinion and to hold in confidence what they say. We should

make it a part of our daily prayers to ask God to give us wisdom and the right words to say whenever we need them - because you never know when you are going to need them. When people do come, we should take it seriously and think about our answers, filtering everything through God’s word. If God has called you to be a gap person, He will equip you. He provides strength to bear up under the load, He provides wisdom and words to say, and opens hearts and ears to hear His word. He longs for us to lean into Him, trust Him and leave it in His hands.

Bridging the gap can sometimes be hard, especially when you are emotionally attached to both sides.

It is easy to be torn in two by two people you love that are blinded by sin, resentment, bitterness and even hate, to the point that it seems irreconcilable. As a gap person, it is not your job to fix relationships, or

solve any problems. God is the only one who can knit souls together and mend broken hearts.

You cannot force anyone to see what they don’t want to see or forgive what they refuse to forgive.

When we try to step into this role, we will be the ones that go down. It will deplete you physically, emotionally, and spiritually to try to do the work only the Lord is meant to

do. Thankfully we don’t have to!

Our God goes before us, under and around us and has our back too.

He lays the groundwork, which we may be a part of as a gap person, but He does the work.

We all need someone to span the chasm and bridge the gap between us and God. Jesus is the gap person for the whole world. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He provided

the direct link for us to our Heavenly Father and bridges all gaps between sinful mankind and our Holy God. Without that sacrifice it wouldn’t be possible for us to have a relationship with God, through which we learn to love others. Jesus is our mediator and the way to the grace and love of our Heavenly Father, which enables us to then love others in grace.

“This (new building) is actually in the center of Parker County. That’s by coincidence, but I think it’s pretty cool, considering we help the county.”

The mystery of twin bridges solved

We confirmed last month that Tin Top Bridge and Hightower Bridge were one and the same.

Mitchell & Pig contracted to build the bridge in 1905 and completed it in 1906.

The famous cotton gin, Tin Top’s namesake, was not built until 1909. Most likely the contractors, along with TXDOT, referred to the bridge as Hightower Bridge because of its proximity to Hightower Valley.

Weatherford Public Library maintains a photo dated 1906 in its catalogue under Brazos River Parker County History of the Hightower Bridge while still under construction. Parker County History and an internet search both confirm the date of 1909 for the cotton gin, with the shiny roof, being built. This concluded, however, still leaves the location of the “twin mystery bridge” unanswered.

What Can Investors Learn from Veterans?

Each year, Veterans Day allows us to show our respect for the sacrifices that military veterans have made for our country. But have you ever stopped to think about what lessons our veterans can teach us about how we conduct various aspects of our lives?

For example, consider the following traits and how they might apply to your actions as an investor: Perseverance – Even veterans who have not served in armed combat have had to persevere in challenging situations. The military life is not an easy one, as it often involves frequent moves, living in foreign countries, time away from loved ones, and so on. As an investor, in what ways do you need to show perseverance? For one thing, you’ll need to stick it out even in the face of volatile markets and short-term losses. And you’ll need the discipline to make investing a top priority throughout your life, even with all the other financial demands you face.

Willingness to learn and adapt – During the course of their service, military veterans frequently need to learn new skills for their deployments. Furthermore, living as they often do in foreign countries, they must adapt to new cultures and customs.

When you invest, you’re learning new things, not only about changes in the economic environment and new investment opportunities, but also about yourself – your risk tolerance, your investment preferences, and your views about your ideal retirement lifestyle. Your ability to learn new investment behaviors and to adapt to changing circumstances can help determine your long-term success.

Awareness of the “big picture” – All members of the military know that their individual duties, while perhaps highly specific, are nonetheless part of a much bigger picture – the security of their country.

Plant trees, shrubs during autumn I guess we could say it about almost any year, but 2019 has really been an unusual one for Parker County gardeners. Let’s pick up the pieces and see where we go next.

Plant: • Winter annuals, including pansies, pinks and ornamental cabbage and kale.

• Daffodils, grape hyacinths and summer snowflakes from bulbs. Keep tulips and Dutch hyacinths in refrigerator until second half of December to give them and artificial winter.

• Finish digging and dividing iris, daylilies and other spring-flowering perennials immediately.

Prune: • Browned foliage and flower stalks from perennials.

• Keep mowing at recommended height until cold weather stops grasses from growing. Mowing also serves to pick up fallen tree leaves.

• Dead or damaged tree limbs before they lose all their leaves – while you can still distinguish them.

n Plant of the Month: Summer Snowflake I’m giving a shout-out this time to a plant that’s completely out of season. It’s a spring-flowering bulb that you’d have to plant now to enjoy come spring. This one is such an understated joy that you really need to have it in your garden.

When you first see its foliage, summer snowflake looks like a daffodil sprouting up in the spring. It’s quite hard to tell them apart. But then when it starts blooming part way into the spring you realize that you’ve planted a wonderful little border flower that you’ll love for springtimes to come.

It bears clusters of small, bellshaped creamy white blooms that hang downward gracefully.

You’ll commonly see the more robust selection Gravetye Giant sold in the nursery trade. It, like other summer snowflake selections, performs best in beds with highly organic, consistently moist planting soil. They do best where I give them morning sun and shade from the hot afternoon sun.
