Bennetts share passion for history while serving three communities

by Rose Jordan Hoopla Correspondent “Preserve your memories, keep them well, what you forget you can never retell.” –Louisa May Alcott Though Brian and Annette Bennett are most known as the owners of Bennett’s Office Supply in Mineral Wells, Weatherford and Stephenville, preserving local history is something their family has been doing for three generations.

“Preserving the history of Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County has been a passion for Brian and his family since they arrived in Mineral Wells.

After marrying into the family, I have grown to love the history and beauty of our area,” Annette shared.

Brian is a part of Historic Mineral Wells, a group dedicated to preserving and sharing local history. Over the years, they’ve raised funds for and completed several projects throughout the city. Currently they are working to establish a museum for the community.

“I was born in Abilene, but we’ve

been in Mineral Wells since I was 4 years old. I was raised here. I consider this my hometown. She is from Iowa,” Brian said.

“I was three.,” Annette explained.

“My dad came for flight school at Fort Wolters.”

The two didn’t meet until high school, however. “I was a junior and she was a freshman, and we met in band,” Brian said. “I started on the trombone and then went to the tuba.”

Annette played the trumpet.

“We dated off and on (during high school). I picked her up every morning for school,” Brian recalled.

“Whether we were dating or not, every morning,” Annette confirmed.

“After I graduated from school, I got back in contact with her the fall of ‘76. We went to see Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The couple married in 1981. They have two daughters, both married and one with a son.

Annette went to work at Bennett’s sometime after they married. “I started out doing deliveries for the Weatherford location,” she said.

SEWING WORLD

It may not surprise you to know that Brian grew up in the business.

“I’ve never worked anywhere else,” he shared.

While they make some renovations to the Mineral Wells location, Brian works from his father’s old office.

“Initially, dad just had a printing shop. Then he had a miniature golf course, then he had office supply.

Then he had a little trophy company,” Brian recounted. “Then he sold the first print shop and kept the office supply. We expanded that.”

“This one (MW location) was first.

Then we had one down in Granbury,” he continued.

“Now we have two locations – Mineral Wells and Weatherford. We still service Stephenville by delivery. We don’t have a storefront there anymore. And we’re currently looking for a new location in Weatherford.”

They hope to find a location that will allow them to better serve their loyal Parker County customers.

“We’ve always enjoyed being on the square so not too far from the downtown area,” Annette said. “It would be

great to have a back or side entrance for receiving shipments and loading out deliveries. And we want to have good parking that makes it easier for our customers,” she continued.

“We know there is a perfect location for us,” she said. “We just need to find it.”

Their commitment to serve doesn’t end with their business.

“The band program has always been important to Brian and me,” Annette shared. “We were both in band, we met in band, and our daughters were in band. We’ve been working with the band program for over 20 years now. Music is something you can take with you anywhere you go throughout your life.”

Azle couple spent decades teaching children overseas

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Reading, it is said, can open up a world of imagination. Robert Perry traveled to another part of the world for many years to make this happen.

Perry, his wife Peggy, and their family were missionaries for the Nazarene Church in South Africa. In all, they spent nearly three decades there before retiring in 2000.

“It’s very challenging for them to get an education,” Perry said of young people in that part of the world. “Children have a special place in my heart.

To help them find something better was great.”

Perry, 88, is now a resident at Legacy Oaks of Azle, a senior community nestled between the towns of Lake Worth and Springtown, just 25 minutes from downtown Fort Worth.

Among Perry’s duties as a missionary was teaching students of a variety of ages, including high school students and at the church’s theological college.

He’s an ordained minister.

Perry was originally assigned to go to Nicaragua. Then, he received a phone call asking if he’d be interested in changing destinations. Another missionary wanted to go where he could speak Spanish. After some thought, Perry made the decision to switch.

The Perrys’ work began in Mozambique, where they worked for a few years before being forced to leave.

“While I was there the Russians took over, so we were chased out and went to Swaziland, which is Eswatini now,” he said. “There were a lot of people who got killed.”

During the Perry’s time in South Africa, Nelson Mandela was released from prison after 27 years to lead a revolution against apartheid and was elected the country’s first black head of state. Though he never met Mandela, Perry considers him a legend and was in the nation when apartheid came to an end.

“He brought a peaceful end to it.

Retired coach thrives after leg amputation

Kindal Rector, former cross country coach at Weatherford High School, lost part of her right leg because of a blood clot. Still, she’s getting the most out of life.

As a coach, Kindal Rector knows a lot about facing and conquering challenges. Not too long ago she bested the biggest challenge of her life - one that could have cost her life.

The 58-year-old former Weatherford High School track and cross country coach had her right leg amputated in 2018. For someone whose life was centered around running, it was quite a shock to the system.

But, as she had done herself numerous times and taught her athletes to do, she met the situation head-on.

Now, she spends much of her time as a volunteer, helping others also facing challenging moments in life.

“I noticed a red streak running up the back of my leg, from my Achilles’ tendon to the bend of my knee. I was having pain in my calf,” Rector recalled. “A colleague of mine insisted I have it seen. I went to two doctors.

Both said it was not a big deal.”

Then, on Jan. 1, 2018 she was transported to the hospital via ambulance.

She was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Many procedures were done to get rid of the clot.

But, unfortunately, 18 days later a lifeor-death decision to amputate was made.

“It is all in the attitude. I almost died!” Rector said. “I found out later that the doctors were preparing my family for the worst. I am grateful to have only lost my leg and not my life.

“I spent 28 days in the hospital and another 10 days in rehab. I have a great prosthetist and physical therapist that has worked with me. I have a great support system of family and friends. I have slowed down, but I have not quit.”

Rector said she has relied on her

strong faith in the Lord.

“He has promised to be with me through difficult times and has not let me down,” she said.

Rector volunteers with a group called REACT (Responding to Every Accident & Crisis Team) of Parker County. They aid law enforcement when they need assistance with victims of crime or accidents, etc. She also works as a volunteer at Freedom House, which serves domestic crime and sexual assault victims.

“The rewards for being involved in these programs are knowing you are helping people who are in immediate crisis. They need someone immediately,” she said.

And she helps with an amputee support group called Atribe, which also helps herself.

“Our Atribe helps each other out.

It is helpful to talk to people who are going through the same experience as you are. We all have lost a limb through some traumatic situation, it is hard but we encourage each other,” she said.

Rector came to Weatherford in 1990 after coaching basketball and track at Boyd High School from 1987-89.

She coached volleyball, basketball and track at Hall Middle School for six years. Then, coach Steve Goben saw the need to start a high school cross country program and asked if she would be interested.

“Of course I said yes. I ran track in junior high and high school, and cross country and track four years in college,” she said.

She started coaching high school track and cross country in Weatherford in 1996. She did not completely leave the middle school track program, however.

“We quickly realized we needed

cross country at the junior high level, so we implemented them in 1997,” she said.

She coached at WHS until 2000, then took some time off to be with her children. She returned to coach at the middle school level from 200812. From there she continued to teach until 2018, retiring in February of that year. Her 1998 girls team was state runner-up, while the girls and boys won both district and regionals. That following track season Weatherford also won district.

Rector has made a point to stay in touch with many of her former athletes. In fact, one even honored her by naming his child after his former coach.

“Yes. Ricky Howell named his daughter Kindal Marie. It is the most precious honor I have ever received,” Rector said. “I was tough on Ricky as an athlete. He did not like me at first.

When he realized I was doing it because I cared about him, his attitude changed.

“Baby Kindal is precious!”

Howell has himself become a volunteer, assisting youths with special needs through his program Ausome Allen, named after his son Allen, who has autism. He credits Rector for turning his life around.

“Kindal Rector saved my life. I was a young know-it-all teenager. I did not have a good relationship with my parents back then and she treated me like her son,” Howell said. “She believed in me and pushed me to be my very best and never let me settle for anything less. Twenty-three years later she still loves me like a son, unconditionally.

She is my hero and my greatest inspiration in life. It was a true honor to name my daughter after her. I love her like she’s my mom and always will.”

Rector said she and several former athletes follow each other on Facebook, make lunch dates, and have even traveled to Colorado for a visit

together. She has also attended several weddings.

“Several visited me while I was in the hospital. Several were involved in fundraisers to help pay for hospital bills. They organized a retirement party for me, some came and walked with me for my first Cowtown 5K,” she said. “They are very special to me and I love them.”

Rector loves camping, hiking, ski biking, anything outdoors.

“Keep a positive attitude. Help others when you can. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. It is a daily renewal and it takes a lot of work,” she said.

And her advice to others in similar situations? Always be grateful, no matter what, and try to be there when others need you.

“There is always someone else who has it worse,” she said. “Helping others makes you feel like you still have a purpose to live.”

Meringue Nests with Vanilla Bean Whipped Cream and Strawberries 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 6 large eggs 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons cornstarch Garnish: 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 pint fresh strawberries, sliced To make meringue nests: Preheat oven to 200 F. On parchment paperlined baking sheet, spread sugar evenly and bake 5-7 minutes to slightly heat.

Remove sugar from oven then increase oven temperature to 225 F. Carefully separate egg whites from yolks completely. In bowl of hand or stand mixer fitted with whip attachment, whisk egg whites on medium-low speed until foamy about 1 minute.

Slowly add sugar 2-3 tablespoons at a time and mix on medium speed 2 minutes between each addition.

Sugar needs completely mixed into egg whites to ensure success. Continue mixing on medium until mixed through and meringue does not feel gritty.

CULINARY.NET

Add cream of tartar, vanilla extract and cornstarch. Increase to high speed and beat until stiff peaks form.

On two parchment paper-lined baking sheets, pipe or spread meringue with spoon into six 4-inch circular “nests.”

Bake 1 hour, 15 minutes then turn off oven and let meringues cool without opening oven for at least 4 hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, in clean mixing bowl fitted with whip attachment, whip heavy whipping cream on medium speed. Slowly add sugar and vanilla. Continue mixing on high speed 2-3 minutes until stiff peaks form. Dollop whipped cream on meringue nests and top with sliced strawberries.

Studying and memorizing scripture will help us remember and be ready to give an answer if we are questioned about what we believe.

We no longer have to carry a book to have it with us at all times, although there is nothing like holding and thumbing through the pages of a book or the Bible. We can also listen to the Bible while it is read aloud to us as we drive in the car or clean house. We can watch almost any church anywhere online these days and there are so many Bible studi-

Azle’s Vikki Linderman says Weatherford art demos worth the drive Vikki Linderman retired this past year and, like most, she couldn’t wait to spend more time doing the things she loved.

For Linderman, who is 67, that meant more time drawing and painting.

“I had been drawing most of my life but started painting about five years ago,” she shared.

At first, she painted on wood with acrylics. Now she mostly paints on canvas, and she’s won a few awards as you can see (at right).

“I recently joined Weatherford Art AsCOURTESY sociation as a way to Vikki Linderman and her beautiful art. get my art out to the public,” she said.

Although Linderman lives in Azle, she says the meetings are well worth the drive.

“The people are so friendly and have encouraged me so much. I am learning new techniques from the demonstrations at the monthly meetings. There is so much talent here!”

You may not have much experience in drawing or painting, but local art groups, like WAA, are a great way to meet like-minded individuals and COURTESY learn from those who have been creating works of art for years.

The membership cost for most local art groups is reasonable, although workshops and entry fees are generally extra.

Linderman says joining a group is a great way to bring more attention to your work since there are monthly contests. Winning artwork in WAA is displayed in businesses around town.

“With so much going on in the world these days, art is like a breath of fresh air,” said Linderman.

Humorist Don Newbury surpasses 1,000 columns

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Syndicated columnist Don Newbury writes “The Idle American” for hundreds of newspapers, but he’s anything but idle. In fact, he recently published his 1,000th weekly column.

There are many layers to Don, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, a Ph.D in journalism from the University of North Texas, and a master’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin.

He did post-doctoral study at Notre Dame.

He served as president of two colleges during his 40 years in education.

He was at Western Texas College from 1980-85 before he was offered the job as president of Howard Payne, where he served in that capacity from 1986-

97, and he is still a chancellor in an honorary role.

“I went to college at Howard Payne COURTESY because I The Newburys thought it was the only place I could go,” Don said. “Turned out to be one of the greatest decisions I could ever make, because I fell in love with it when I was young, and it was such a beautiful feeling to come back as president.”

Students refer to Don as the “Popcorn President.” He has popped and given away more than 24 tons of popcorn, a tradition that began on his back porch in Brownwood.

They knew that “when the porch light was on, Dr. Newbury was handing out popcorn,” he said.

Don said the tradition started when his daughters were young and the family had a snowcone machine. A major donor at Howard Payne asked him why he didn’t give away popcorn.

“I said, ‘I don’t have a machine.’ She said, ‘I’ll send you one.’ That was three machines ago,” he said.

It was not uncommon for Don’s students to look down on him while at Howard Payne. It certainly wasn’t for lack of respect, but simply because they were often literally above him.

Don often operated a boat while students parasailed from a height of 600 feet above Lake Brownwood.

“That’s what I miss most. It’s exhilarating,” he said. “We had this one kid, he was up in the air, waving at us, and

I waved back because I thought he was having a great time,” Don recalled.

“Then, when we landed, I learned he was waving because he was vomiting all over the lake.”

Once he retired from Howard Payne, Don resumed writing. His weekly column is in its 19th year of publication and appears in over 200 newspapers.

He doesn’t charge them to run it.

“Most of them are broke. I feel better doing it this way,” he said.

Don has also had around 6,000 public speaking appearances and is still going strong. While he loves staying busy, Don takes each day with a sense of relative ease.

He and Brenda moved to Burleson to be near family, but Don is going to find inspiration wherever he is.

“Just look around, there’s so many stories to tell,” he said.

The historical hexagonal house

The Hexagon House, located in Mineral Wells in the 700 block of N. Oak Street, opened in 1897. The hotel was built by D.G. Galbraith, who held a patent for a paper clip. The house was designed in the shape of a honeycomb for ventilation purposes. It took two years to build and had 35 rooms at a cost of $50,000. Ann Galbraith Meriweather, the builder’s daughter, offered the property for sale in 1958 and announced that should she not get her asking price she would tear it down. It was demolished shortly thereafter.

The Medicare program is primarily funded through a combination of payroll taxes, general revenues and premiums paid by beneficiaries. Other sources of revenues include taxes on Social Security benefits, payments from states and interest on payments and investments.

The disparate parts of Medicare are funded in different ways.

Medicare Part A, which covers hospital and inpatient care, receives most of its funding, 89%, from payroll taxes.

Medicare Part B, which covers outpatient services, obtains most of its funding, 74%, from general revenue. General revenue is money taken in by the federal government from taxes and nontax sources to fund government programs. Medicare Part D, an optional benefit that covers prescription drug costs, also receives most of its funding, 73%, from general revenue.

Medicare Part C — also known as Medicare Advantage — is funded by Medicare Parts A, B and D as well as monthly premiums enrollees pay for their plan. A Medicare Advantage plan is an alternative to Original Medicare that enables the beneficiary to receive a bundle of Medicare coverage through a private health insurance plan. Coach Jackie Harvey was recently honored for 50 years of teaching at Mineral Wells High School.

In 1972, Harvey earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Sul Ross State University, where he was a track and football standout and a member of the Lone Star Conference Championship Track team in 1971.

Upon graduating, Harvey took a position coaching cross country and track and field at Mineral Wells High School and has regularly produced track champions.

Harvey’s best team finish came in 1994,

“You appreciate people being behind you,” Harvey said at the recent event honoring him.

“It’s a great honor for the people to commemorate me like this. This is why I have been here 50 years – the people in the community.”

Harvey was inducted into the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Hall of Fame in 2017.

In 2002, the school renamed their track complex in his honor.
