Women's and Newcomers' Club celebrates a year of fun, friendship The Parker County Women's and Newcomers' Club had their annual Celebration of Women Week in March, which was capped off with the group's annual tea.

Ruth McCandless, who currently serves as club president, was honored with the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award.

Linda Bagwell, Bonnie Fitch and Sherry Swanson tied for the Marjorie Roach Award.

The club boasts over 200 members and grows each meeting. Finishing Touches Myrlan Coleman's office is filled with art from her 48 years in the Visual Arts Department at Weatherford College.

After 48 years at the college, Myrlan Coleman still isn't ready to clean her brushes

"Everything in our life is affected by art. The homes we live in, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive."

This is Myrlan Coleman's world, one anchored by art.

The more people there are to create great art, the more opportunities there are for it to be enjoyed and experienced to its fullest.

For this reason, she not only creates art every chance she gets, she has been a part of the visual arts program at Weatherford College for 48 years, currently as the program's director.

"Take the color red in a stop sign. They use that color because it instinctively tells us there is a danger if we don't stop," she said. "That's an example of the power of art. Art is important to the everyday person, not just those going into the field."

Myrlan works in a variety of mediums. She can paint, sculpt, draw. Don't ask which is her favorite because she said she truly has none.

"There's just so much about all forms of art that I love."

paintings, a bit of sculpting, and above her desk is a modern art painting in which she mixed a variety of colors, dominated by blue. There's also a piece of copper art on an adjacent wall.

But one of the things for which she is most proud is a collage hanging over her desk. Framed are several of the Christmas cards she creates for Weatherford College, a tradition that began in 1993 in a collaboration between herself and then WC President Jim Boyd.

"Jim Boyd, when he was president, did everything he could to promote me. He was a good friend and a great president," she said. "The first one I did was the bell. The next year I did the coyote, and then we started building the plaza. One time I did the old college and the Jim Wright Library the year it was built.

"It's really special the way it has become an annual tradition. I look forward to it each year."

Myrlan was introduced to art at a young age.

"My mother would show some art. Primarily she did it for cultural enrichment, but she was great. She loved oil," Myrlan said. "She also loved to sculpt. I have a bust

of my dad she did -- it's almost like looking at him."

Inspired by her mother, Myrlan attended the University of Texas in Austin and studied art. Most of her college classes had more students in them than her entire graduating class at tiny Morton High School.

"We didn't have an art program in high school at Morton, so in college I was competing against people from Highland Park and other big schools," Myrlan said. "I showed up early and stayed late. I hung out in the hallway when I didn't have a class. I did everything I could to learn everything I could.

"My dad was instrumental in me never quitting. He always said, 'You never reach the pinnacle. It's not possible.'"

This uplifting style has served Myrlan well in life, said WC Interim President Brent Baker, who has known for her many years. He said it also serves those who are fortunate enough to know her.

"What impresses me most about Myrlan is her positive attitude. You can count on her to have a smile and a nice thing to say," he said. "That's inspiring to me, and I'm sure it is for her students as well."

Her good friend of more than three decades, Judy White, an owner of Texas Butane in Weatherford, called Myrlan the most talented, gracious, kind-hearted person she's ever met.

"She would give the shirt off her back to help anyone, and she has done so much for those kids and the college.

Two of my grandchildren had her as a teacher, and their lives are better for it."

Myrlan thought about going into the world of advertising after college, but after moving to Weatherford, her options for such were limited in those days. So, she presented a one-person show in Fort Worth to promote herself. Dr. Francis Law saw her work and offered her a job at the college.

on her master's degree she did advertising for the college and produced audio-visual projects.

"It was just a blessing that I wound up here at Weatherford College. It has been more than a place I've taught. It's been a home," she said.

Myrlan's art has hung in the homes and offices of some prestigious people, including former Speaker of the House Jim Wright in Washington, D.C. It was a landscape painting entitled "Texas Revisited."

"That was really cool. Being from Weatherford, he wanted a Weatherford artist," she said. "I was very flattered."

Her work is also included in the permanent collection of the University of Texas in Austin and has been displayed in the Wennas Ski Resort in Sweden. Another painting, "After the Storm," was awarded the Invitational Purchase Prize and purchased by Texas Woman's University to hang in the Texas Governor's Mansion, where it hung until the mansion burned down.

Her work can also be found in the collections of former Texas Speaker Reuben Senterfitt, former Senator Bob Glaskow, and former University of Texas football coach David McWilliams.

She also created a logo for Weatherford College that stood for many years shortly after her arrival on campus.

Judy said one of Myrlan's pieces of art, given to her during this past Christmas season, affected the lives of several people.

Twenty five years ago Myrlan Coleman created the annual Weatherford College Christmas Card that has become one of the school's traditions.

"I had a pic of my (late) dad and I had tried to have it blown up, but it was too blurry," Judy recalled. "Unbeknownst to me, my husband got with her, and Judy presented me with a sketch that was perfect. My mother is 91, and she has it on her wall. [The photo] was taken when he was 5 or 6 years old in overalls. But it's not just me she does that for. She does that for a lot of people."

Q&A with Linda Lentz

Hoopla’s Gardener of the Month

Linda, tell us about your career and what activities you enjoy in retirement.

I grew up in Brock and attended Weatherford College, then earned a bachelor's and master's degrees at TCU. I taught elementary and special education, was a counselor and a diagnostician. I retired in 2004, but I continued testing and consulting for UT Tyler.

I'm a Master Gardener and belong to Parker County Garden Club, Parker County Women’s and Newcomers' Club, Book Club, Sewing Club, Lunch Group, Breakfast Group, and attend First Baptist Church.

What changes have you made in your garden for 2018?

I planted 400 tulip and daffodils this spring! A storm took out big a portion of the large live oak in my yard, so I will also be planning more sun flower beds instead of shade.

What's your favorite thing to grow?

My favorite is flowers -- perennials, annuals. My mom and grandmother were flower growers. Dad was vegetable grower.

What's the best gardening advice you ever received?

Make a plan and stick to it! If you don’t, you will have a helter skelter landscape. Being a flower person is hard. You see a pretty flower you want it.

Time to get tomatoes, peppers in the ground As Parker County turns its attention to the prime time of spring, here are some tidbits I hope you’ll enjoy.

PLANT: • Warm-season vegetables early in month: tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn, melons. Mid-month okra, southern peas, eggplant, sweet potatoes (sandy soil).

• Trees, shrubs and groundcovers while nurseries have best selection.

• Summer annual color to replace pansies. Best types include pentas, angelonias, coleus, copper plants, moss rose, trailing lantanas, purple fountaingrass, wax begonias and, late in month, caladiums.

• Sod for new plantings of turf.

Wait until May to plant bermuda grass seed.

FERTILIZE: • Use an all-nitrogen fertilizer with half or more of N in slow-release form on shrubs, trees, groundcovers, annuals, perennials and vegetable gardens unless soil tests advise otherwise.

PRUNE: • Erratic new growth from evergreen shrubs.

• Spring-flowering shrubs and vines

ON THE LOOKOUT: • Aphids on tender new growth.

Use hard stream of water to wash them away or apply labeled pest control product.

• Snails, slugs and pillbugs. Use Sevin dust or bait, or put dry dog food in a pie tin. Sink the tin flush with soil surface, then fill with water. The Blue Iris pests will be attracted to the fermenting smell and will drown in the water.

PLANT OF THE MONTH – BEARDED IRIS This popular perennial flower

grows well in all parts of Texas.

• Longtime favorite with Texas gardeners. You’ll find old plantings where homes once stood.

• Grows best in full or nearly full sun.

• Prefers highly organic, constantly moist soils. Fertilize in spring with high-N food.

• Colors include purple, blue, burgundy, orange, yellow, pink and white.

• Grow from large, fleshy roots called “rhizomes.”

• Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart so they will NEIL SPERRY not be crowded. Dig and divide as clumps begin to become crowded. This is best done in October.

• Best of the new types are available from avid hobbyists. Look for them at Iris Society shows in the area.

n Neil Sperry Answers: 'What are the secrets to a thick, healthy lawn?'

I’m asked this question just about wherever I go. Here are my guidelines.

1. Be certain you have enough sunlight. For St. Augustine that means 6 hours. For bermuda, 8 hours.

2. Mow frequently (5- or 6-day intervals during summer) to keep grass

low, spreading.

3. Mow at recommended height for type of grass. Common bermuda: 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch. St. Augustine 2 to 2-1/2 inches. Zoysias vary with type.

4. Water deeply, then let top inch of soil dry somewhat before you water

again. That encourages deeper root growth.

5. Apply all-nitrogen fertilizer with half or more of that N in slow-release form. Feed St. Augustine mid-April, mid-June and early September. Bermuda every two months mid-April

through mid-October.

6. Watch for common pests: Bermuda mites, cottony blight and white grubs. For St. Augustine take all root rot, gray leaf spot, chinch bugs, brown patch and white grub worms, all in chronological order through the year.

FINALLY a way to fix the PAIN of a BULGING DISC Are you suffering from back pain, arm or leg pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs?

How can you leave the legacy you desire?

Now is a good time to think about the type of legacy you’d like to leave.

Of course, “legacy” can mean many things. In the broadest sense, your legacy is how you will be remembered by your loved ones, friends and the communities to which you belong. On a practical level, establishing your legacy means providing your family and the charitable organizations you support with the resources you’d like them to have.

And that means you may need to take the following actions: create your plans, communicate your wishes and review and update your documents.

Let’s take a quick look at all these steps: • Create your plans. You will want to work with your legal professional, and possibly your tax and financial professionals, too, to draft the plans needed to fulfill your legacy wishes.

These plans may include drafting a will, living trust, health care directive, power of attorney and other documents.

Ideally, you want these plans to do more than just convey where you want your money to go – you want to impart, to the next generation, a sense of the effort that went into building the wealth they receive. Without such an appreciation, your heirs may be less than rigorous in retaining the tangible legacies you’ve left them.

• Communicate your wishes. It’s important to communicate your legacyrelated wishes to your family members as early as possible. featured in numerous publications, both spotlighted and as a contributor. But the opinion she values most is right here at home.

Myrlan, 71, has been married to Jim Coleman for 53 years. They own the City Pharmacy in downtown Weatherford. He is her biggest fan -- and critic.

"Jim has an incredible eye, I guess because he's been around art for so long," Myrlan said. Jim is himself a major success in his field. He was honored by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy for over 50 years of serving the community.

She and Jim have two children, daughter Jill and son Will. They have seven grandchildren.

During her nearly five decades at Weatherford College, Myrlan has seen many changes. She remembers being excited at having an electric typewriter when she first started.

"When we first got computers, we were so in awe."

Technology, Myrlan said, is easily the biggest change she's seen in her time at WC. While overall she sees it as a positive, it does have its challenges.

"In this new world, cell phones are a problem. Students will have headphones on under their hoodies. They think you don't know," she said with a chuckle. "But what would we do without cell phones?

"The students, though, are the most rewarding part of teaching. Often, there are those who never intended to do great things with art, and to see that world opened up to them is wonderful."

There have been opportunities to leave, she said. She was never seriously tempted.

"I have friends who have long retired and friends who are new on this campus,' Myrlan said. "I've had opportunities to leave, but I've always been happy here.

"I get a letter from Social Security every time I turn around, asking when I'm going to retire. The last time I filled one out, I told them 2048. I don't think I'll make it that long, but it would be nice to reach 50 years before I retire. That's a nice, round number."

Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel honored by Texas Historical Commission Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel was recently honored by the Texas Historical Commission for serving the area for 123 years at the intersection of North Elm and East First streets.

The building and land were sold by Couts Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church in 1953 to John and Robert Galbreaith and Lambert Pickard, who opened a multi-level funeral home. The busi-

ness was known for its air-conditioned chapel and vehicles.

A year after the grand opening in early 1954, James Valentine “J.V.” Plowman began driving the company’s funeral coach and ambulance. He and his wife Norma lived in the second story of the building for seven years, while J.V. earned his funeral director’s and embalmer’s licenses.

When Lambert Pickard left the business in 1966, and J.V. was named vice-president of the company. The Plowmans purchased the business and land from the sole surviving owner, Robert Galbreaith, in 1975.

The couple kept the name Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel to build upon the company’s wellestablished reputation and worked side-by-side by 32 years, until Mr. Plowman passed in 2007.

Norma Plowman still runs the business with the help of her family. Son James R. Plowman now serves as president. Son Bill Plowman serves on the board of directors. Granddaughters Misty Plowman-Engel and Angie Plowman Hernandez work in the office as well. The company employs an average of 15 people. Together, they continue the tradition of providing support and compassion to those seeking funeral direction and cremation.

In 2016, Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel opened a second location in Willow Park.

As a high school drop-out, I never thought I’d ever amount to much—and in a way I’ve not.

After an honorable discharge from the Navy, I was fearful of enrolling in college with only a GED. My junior college teachers were outstanding and inspired me to hold my head high and not give up. I went on to college, off and on from 1955 until 1975, and earned four college degrees—my last was a doctor’s in degree from Texas A and M, Commerce.

Later, as a community college professor, I would spend an hour at the start of each semester sharing the struggles I'd had as a young man. I wanted to remind my students that they should always perform above their own expectations.
