I love baseball and the season is in full swing now. This page gives me a new appreciation for major league batters as they swing at those 100 mile-per-hour fastballs. Wow! Seeds are sprouting throughout this issue, so it’s time to get outside and jump into summer fun.

8 According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service there are seven kinds of sea turtles: hawksbill, green, loggerhead, flatback, Kemp’s ridley, olive ridley and leatherback.

Sea or marine turtles have outlived almost all of the prehistoric animals.

Marine turtles were around during the time of the dinosaurs and are still present in the world’s oceans today. On today’s Kid Scoop News page, meet these incredible creatures!

One way to tell one type of sea turtle from another is to look at the pattern of scutes, or plates, on their shells.

NOTE: Unlike other species of sea turtle, the leatherback does not have scales. Instead, it is covered with firm, rubbery skin with several long ridges or “keels.”

Migrating leatherback turtles have been known to dive down 4,600 feet (1,400 meters) to avoid sharks and other predators.

They must surface every hour to breathe.

Draw lines to connect the turtles whose shells are alike.

Sea turtles and land turtles are reptiles and they both have shells. One way they are different is that a sea turtle cannot retract its limbs or its head like a land turtle can. Find the differences between these two turtles.

Sea turtles are long-distance travelers. Some species travel hundreds, even thousands of miles, from their feeding grounds to their nesting grounds. The adult females return faithfully to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched.

Help this turtle avoid the hazards and find her way to the island.

The breeding grounds for the Pacific population of loggerhead turtles are limited to a few beaches in southern Japan, but adults are known to migrate incredible distances in order to feed. One turtle tagged in Japan was found feeding off the coast of Baja, Mexico, a distance of over 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers). Loggerheads have been sighted from Chile all the way north to Alaska.

When I picked up today’s Kid Scoop News page, I saw a way to find out how to solve the crime.

The fingerprint was my clue! No two fingerprints are alike. If I matched the chocolate fingerprint to one of my suspects – case solved!

Most people’s fingerprints look like a whorl, loop or arch. What does your index look like? Place your fingerprint in the space.

1. With a pencil, scribble on a piece of paper until you have a nice big black mark.

2. Then rub your index finger in the mark for several seconds.

3. Next, get some transparent tape.

Put a piece of it over your finger, press down, and pull it off.

4. Then put the tape on a piece of paper. Now you can see your fingerprint.

Major league pitchers throw a baseball nearly 100 miles per hour, giving a batter a fraction of a second to swing at the pitch.

But pitchers use the science of aerodynamics to make the ball even harder to hit.

Can you hit a home run? It’s easy! Just find the item in each base and on home plate in your newspaper. Complete all four and it’s a home run!

Distance from pitcher’s mound to home plate: 60 feet, 6 inches

During the last 15 feet of the ball’s journey, it begins to curve downward or sometimes to the left or right, depending on the type of pitch. The batter must begin swinging before the ball begins to curve. It’s not easy to be a big league hitter!

Gravity is always pulling a baseball downward once it’s thrown. Pitchers grip the ball in different ways to create spin. Air traveling above the ball is forced downward by the spin, and the air below it creates lift.

File a notch on one end of your stick.

The notch will help hold the stick in place on the rim of the can.

hat is an idiophone? Idio means self and phone means sound. Idiophones are instruments of solid materials that vibrate when hit, shaken, plucked, scraped, rubbed, stamped or crashed together. But who’s to say what’s an instrument?

On the other end of the stick, have an adult drill a small hole. Feed the string through and tie to secure.

Stomping your foot on the floor turns the floor into an idiophone. Tapping a pencil on your desk uses the desk as an idiophone. Think of other things that could be idiophones.

Turn the coffee can upside down. Have an adult punch a small hole in the bottom of the can. Feed the string through and tie a pencil or dowel on the end of it. Set the notch end of the stick on the rim of the can.

Hold the gutbucket as shown here pulling the string taut. Then, start plucking!

Partially fill empty plastic yogurt containers with different things: sand, seeds, marbles, uncooked beans, rice or pasta.

Cap and shake.

Notice the different sounds each makes.

15 During the 1700s, playing music on glasses was a popular pastime.

The glasses were partially filled with water and the person playing the glasses would slightly wet a finger and rub it around the top of the glass.

The more water you put in the glass, the deeper the note it will play. Fill some glasses with different amounts of water, and see what kinds of sounds you can create. Try tapping the rim of each glass with a pencil or spoon for another kind of sound.

6 Lay down some plastic and make a batch of newspaper clay. Make some cool things out of the clay.

Make Some Newspaper Clay!

1. Flatten five pieces of clay into palm leaf shapes.

2. Roll out a small piece of clay for a trunk.

Push in one end of a pencil to indent.

Mold and make hard as rock pulptures with clay made from newspaper pulp.

1. First make some newspaper pulp. Fill a large bowl with little squares of newspaper.

Make the pieces about 2 inches square.

2. Cover with warm water.

Let soak overnight. Drain away excess water in the morning.

3. Attach leaves to trunk.

Let dry. Paint and glue on pencil top.

3. To make the clay, squeeze the pulp to remove excess water. Add 2 tablespoons of dry wallpaper paste to one cup of damp pulp. Add a couple drops of clove oil to make your clay smell good. Mix well with your hands until it is pliable.
