Senior musicians pickin’ for more than two decades

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent The Silver Strings senior community band has been together for more than two decades, and while the band’s members may change, one thing remains constant: they love to play and folks love to hear them.

“It’s hard to pick just one best part of our group,” said James Estes, who, along with wife Ruth, leads the band now.

“We have a very unique group of people. They’re caring, funny, and we’re a family of sorts.

We laugh, cut up and have a good time just being with each other.”

The band currently has 15 members, James said. It has expanded from being strictly ukuleles in the beginning to now having a banjo, a guitar, a bass guitar, a drum, a dobro, two mandolins, a ukulele banjo - and, of course, ukuleles. They practice each Monday morning at Azle Senior Activities Center.

New members are welcome.

James plays a banjo, while Ruth plays a ukulele. In fact, she learned to play for the purpose of being in the band.

“I never played a string instrument before we joined this group,” she said.

As to how the band came by its name, no one seems to know.

But they do all remember how

much fun they’ve had.

“We enjoy the fellowship,” said Kay Prine, who joined the band when it was strictly ukuleles.

They play regularly at nearby assisted living facilities. Their song list includes a variety of old time country, gospel, “Any we think the seniors would like to sing along with us,” James said. They have several songs they use to get the audience going, including “You Are My Sunshine,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” “This World Is Not My Home,” “Jambalaya,” Billy Billy Bayou,” “Roly Poly” and “God On the Mountain.”

“We’ve noticed the audience likes upbeat and slow songs,” Ruth said.

“Since we play mostly older songs, the residents often sing along with us,” Prine said.

“Many thank us for coming. We enjoy bringing them joy and happiness.”

Senior musicians gather every Monday to practice.

Over the years, the stories have mounted. And even though James and Ruth only joined the band about five years ago, they have one or two of their own.

“We have one little man, he’s a sweetheart, but he forgets his music book or music stand,” she said, adding with a chuckle.

“We’ve had trouble with people not turning their mics on or off.

We’ve been very lucky. We have a guy who thinks he’s a comedian, and he is a character.”

James also handles the sound system.

As with many things, COVID-19 shut down their performing and practicing for a while.

But they got through and are doing their gigs again.

“Some of us practiced at

home, then after most had their COVID shots we gathered in different places,” James said.

“We had one lady offer a building out of town and we practiced there. It was very nice of them to do that.”

Perhaps the biggest reason the band has been together all these years is the simple fact that, while they love playing music, they also love being friends. It’s not uncommon for them to go out to eat together after performing, for example.

“Ruth Ann tells me why we keep doing this is because it’s fun and we get out of the house,” James said. “We love bringing joy to people who are confined in the rest home. They bring us joy, too. What’s better than that?”

Huttons preparing for Parker County Peach Festival

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent It just wouldn’t be a Parker County Peach Festival without peaches from the Hutton Farm.

Ever since the Hutton family purchased their farm in Parker County from J.K. Johnson in 1980 they have been connected to the Peach Festival. It was a four-way partnership between the parents and sons. Charles and LaFreita Hutton had raised their two boys in West Fort Worth before making the move.

The grandparents lived in Perrin and Jacksboro, so the family traveled to see them many weekends, stopping at Johnson’s peach farm during the summers. The Huttons had always wanted a place in the country and had been looking.

Then, one day, when visiting with Johnson, they mentioned that if he was ever interested in selling they would be interested.

“He said, ‘Let’s talk,’ and the rest is history,” said Gary Hutton, who now runs the farm with his family. “It made sense to have the connection (to the Peach Festival).”

The Huttons contribute thousands of peaches to the festival each year. It’s a highlight of peach season, which usually runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Early July is peak season, and Gary said it is the reason the festival is always the second Saturday of July.

His wife, Peggy, is also the director of development for the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the Parker County Peach Festival.

She said while it is an enjoyable time, it is also a very hectic time – but that’s a part of making

thousands of people happy on an annual basis.

“Peach season is always busy. There is always work to be done,” Peggy said.

“During peach season the days go by so quickly because there is constant demand for more peaches,” Gary said.

Ironically, Peggy spent a lot of time picking peaches on her grandparents’ farm. When it came to her running a peach farm with Gary, however, it wasn’t such a peachy idea to her.

“My dad thought my siblings and I should be the ones to pick the peaches and sit in the Farmer’s Market parking lot and sell them out of the back of the pickup,” she recalled. “I did that many a summer growing up.”

She admits telling Gary she had done enough of that growing up. So while she would marry him, she told him her peach picking days were over – but she did give him another idea for the future of the business.

“When Gary and I decided to marry his family had only owned the peach farm for a few years. I told him I grew up picking and selling peaches and wasn’t interested in doing so anymore, but that if we had children to feel free to incorporate them into the business,” she said.

And he did just that.

Their son Jay started in middle school and then their daughter soon after. Jay has picked, graded, delivered and occasionally works the shed to sell. Daughter Maegan has also worked in the shed to sell peaches.

Peggy has never worked for the Hutton Peach Farm, though she is a great spokesperson. She spreads the word about them in her job at the chamber, and she arranges tours of the farm.

“I know how much effort goes into a good peach crop and I’m very supportive of my family,” she said.

And there are so many stories from the years of working with the festival, she and Gary both said. They agree the best part is all the people who come and enjoy their peaches – people from literally everywhere.

“There are numerous things that have happened over the years but the one thing that stands out is meeting people from all types of backgrounds.

We have had visitors from all over the United States, as well as other countries,” Gary said.

“We have some very faithful customers that are like dear friends because we have gotten to know their families and they know us.

“For instance, Maegan worked at the farm for many summers. People were accustomed to her and have missed her since she’s gone. They still ask about her.”

Along with the challenge of meeting the annual demand for peaches are the challenges of the always unpredictable Texas weather, he said.

“Weather is always an issue.

It is unpredictable and uncontrollable. Every variety (of peach) has to have a certain number of chilling hours, so cold weather is needed during the winter, but then comes a point in time that the peaches have budded and that colder weather isn’t wanted,” he said.

Yet, the Huttons always deliver, and not just to the Peach Festival. Peaches are sold not only at the Peach Farm on Greenwood Cutoff Road, but at the Farmer’s Market in Weatherford as well as in Fort Worth.

They also sell their peaches to several smaller fruit stands around the Metroplex.

And they have no plans to slow down.

“New trees have been planted and will continue to be planted. There is so much more to having an orchard than just throwing seeds in the ground to produce a tree,” Hutton said.

“It takes a huge amount of work to produce good peaches, and the Hutton family will continue to plan ahead to keep meeting the need.”

Chocolate and Strawberry Greek Yogurt Bark Recipe courtesy of Jenn Fillenworth, MS, RDN, of “Jenny With the Good Eats” on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 5 minutes Servings: 12 3 cups plain non-fat Greek yogurt 1/3 cup honey, plus additional for drizzling, divided (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup melted dark chocolate 1/2 cup strawberries 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips In medium bowl, combine Greek yogurt, honey and vanilla.

On parchment-lined baking sheet, spread Greek yogurt mixture to 1/4-inch thickness.

Drop spoonfuls of melted chocolate onto yogurt and use toothpick to drag in circles. Press strawberries and chocolate chips into yogurt.

Freeze at least 3 hours.

Remove from freezer and break into pieces.

Weekly Zoom activity sessions keep homebound seniors socially active According to Texas Health Resources, research shows seniors who are not connected to friends or family have a 29% higher chance of having heart disease, a 32% higher chance of having a stroke and a 50% higher chance of having dementia.

In response, Dementia Friendly Fort Worth and Texas Health Resources (THR) collaborated to launch a program, Let’s Get Together: A Social Club for Seniors, designed to engage older adults who are socially isolated and may be showing signs of boredom, anxiety, loneliness and depression. Often, many of these seniors live alone, lack the transportation to meet in person with friends, encounter challenges with health issues, or have lost friends who have passed away.

include a guest presenter, who will guide participants through fun and engaging activities. Participants join with other seniors who find themselves in similar life situations.

Fort Worth personal trainer surprised by watercolor skills Pam Johnston of Fort Worth retired in 2016, but that doesn’t stop her from working five days a week. The personal trainer now spends most of her time focusing on her art and helping others.

“I didn’t know anything about watercolor until I took a class at Hobby Lobby,” said the 70-year-old Fort Worth native.

It was roughly six years ago when a friend encouraged her to give art a try.

COURTESY She had Pam Johnston discovered her recently retired talent for watercolor at age 64. and felt it was time for a new hobby, so she decided to try it.

“I loved it from the get go,” she said. “Thattalent was there and I didn’t know it.”

Some of her work has been featured on donor cards printed by the North Texas Humane COURTESY Society, where she helps out two days a week.

Johnston encourages seniors to stay active after retirement for better physical and emotional health. She also spends one day each week helping out at an area food bank.

If you’re interested in trying watercolor for yourself, you can join her and other eager students at the Benbrook Senior Citizens Center, where they gather to paint at 2 p.m. each Tuesday. Come join the fun. Like Pam, you may have a hidden talent.

Pam says she also enjoys card games at the center, which is located at 1010 Mercedes Street in Benbrook and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rediscover Mineral Wells Baker Hotel and unique downtown makes for a remarkable daytrip

by Rose Jordan Hoopla Correspondent In the moments before the electricity was turned off at the Baker Hotel before closing its doors in 1972, Eileen Stringer and her husband were moving their personal belongings out of the room they’d lived in for the last four years. Their final load, photo albums, were carried down the six flights of stairs to the lobby with only the light of a flashlight.

Eileen was the last one to lock up the Baker Hotel when it closed for business.

She’s held onto her memories and the key to Room 612 all these years. In 2019, she gave the key to the Baker Development Team for the museum that will display the stories and artifacts they’ve uncovered during the restoration.

Mark Rawlings, general contractor, and partner on the Baker Team, recently shared the story on their YouTube channel. “She was the last one that locked the door and

walked away. And she was so sweet, she gave me the guest room key to her room.”

The team located the original door from her room, #612, and restored the lockset. At the New Year’s Eve Gala in 2019, they presented the door and key, and Mrs. Stringer unlocked the very door she’d locked more than 45 years ago.

When the hotel reopens, the guest room door from Room 612 will have a place of honor in the hotel’s museum, along with the key, a photo of the couple, and their story.

Eileen’s is one of many stories that highlight the people that built the hotel, stayed or worked there, and celebrated special moments there. From Mineral Wells natives to the rich and famous, the hotel has captured the hearts of thousands, even millions of people -- according to the hotel’s TikTok account.

“The Baker Hotel is one of the most followed historic hotels in the country amongst all social media platforms. And of the top followed historic hotels, the Baker is the only one that isn’t operable at the

moment,” said Remy Fairchild. Remy is the daughter of Laird Fairchild, lead developer of the hotel, and manages the Baker Hotel’s social media. She and Mark document the progress of the renovation for the hotel’s many fans around the globe.

And there’s a lot to document. Since the big announcement in June 2019 that the hotel had been purchased and begin renovation, the team has been hard at work. Even through the pandemic, supply shortages, and crew shortages, work has continued.

With general demolition complete, temporary utilities and construction elevator installed, the team has been able to restore all 997 windows, complete the tile roof, remove the old plumbing pipe, and prepare the electrical. “The building is fully prepped to undergo full blown construction,” Remy told us.

Restoring the 14-story Spanish Colonial Revival hotel is a painstaking process because it is indeed a restoration rather than simply a renovation. In fact, it is reported See THE BAKER, P. 14

to be “the largest restoration in Texas history of a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places,” according to an article in Texas Monthly, June 2019.

That means that all 997 windows had to be carefully removed, restored, and replaced. The very ornate moldings and architectural details throughout the hotel had to be scanned so that new molds can be cast when repairing or replacing them.

All the light fixtures, doors, hinges, lavatories, etc., are harvested, sorted, labeled, and stored in what Mark affectionately calls his “treasure room” until they’re ready to be placed back into service.

While the original interior will be restored wherever possible, the number of rooms will not. Historically, the hotel had 450 small guest rooms. The renovated hotel will offer 165 rooms expanded to meet modern, luxury standards.

Though in a different location of the hotel, the Baker will again offer a spa and mineral water pools featuring the mineral waters that originally brought people to town. The hotel will also have convention and business spaces, ballrooms, a restaurant, coffee shops and retail stores.

Chief Quanah Parker and 250 Comanche braves rode horses in an Independance Day parade on July 4, 1896. The Fort Worth and Denver Railway station in Quanah, Texas, is at the left. Quanah Parker was a war leader of the Kwahadi band of the Comanche Nation. He was the son of Kwahadi ComancheJune chief Peta Nocona and 2022 Cynthia Ann Parker, an Anglo-American who had been kidnapped as a child and assimilated into the Nokoni tribe. Parker County is named after Cynthia Ann. Following the apprehension of several Kiowa chiefs in 1871, her son Quanah emerged as a dominant figure in the Red River War, clashing repeatedly with Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie. Quanah Parker eventually surrendered and peaceably led the Kwahadi to the reservation at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Mason changes styles to keep things fresh “My life has been a joy as I have finally found the direction to pursue,” said Judy Mason.

The Weatherford resident shared her story, which started with marriage and raising two daughters. Longing for a creative outlet, she began taking art classes at The Woman’s Club in Fort Worth.

Eventually, she became a teacher herself, but her style continues to evolve.

“I continue to explore and change with many new ideas,” said Mason. “As a senior citizen, my every desire is to spend time in my studio

or teaching home schoolers design rather than so much technique. Technique will come about through practice.”

If you’re looking for a new hobby, Mason encourages you to take the leap.

“We are always at the beginning and that is exciting.

There is always new approaches to be found,” said Mason. “Life is never dull.”

Mason is a member of the Weatherford Art Association.

She has remained long-time friends with many of the artists she has met along her journey.

John 13:12-16 During Bible times people wore sandals and walked dusty, dirty roads. These conditions necessitated a lot of footwashing. Foot washing was reserved for the lowliest of servants. Very rarely did friends ever wash each other’s feet. If they did, it was done as an act of great love. As the Jesus and the disciples were eating their last supper together before Jesus would be crucified, the disciples argued over who was the greatest among them. Jesus’ response to their discussion was, For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. Luke 22:27. Later, Jesus proceeded to wash the disciple’s feet.

This was totally unexpected from His disciples. Normally a master does not serve his disciples. No one at the table “expected” Jesus to wash their feet.

But that’s what love does. Love does what no one expects to be done for them.

Here was the King of Kings and Lord of Lords on bended knee performing the lowly but selfless and loving act of washing their feet. But this example

from Jesus was not just about the physical act of washing someone’s feet. This was about much more. This story emphasizes humility - and humility is the beginning of holiness. He was making Himself an example and teaching them that only in humility and serving one another, is true greatness is found. They were shocked and humbled, and some even tried to stop Him. But He told them, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” His actions were symbolic of spiritual cleans-

ing for us as well as a model of Christ-like humility. Apart from allowing Christ to cleanse us, we cannot have a relationship with Him. There is no spiritual relationship without cleansing.

Jesus didn’t have to get down on His knees and wash the disciples’ feet, but He did.

He did it because he loved them, and he wanted to express and show His love for them. He did it to show them how they were to serve and love others, as well as to be an example for us of how to truly
