The Parker County Women’s and Newcomer’s Club held their annual scholarship luncheon and style show in May. Style show director Mary Ripperton assisted the ladies in finding flattering outfits at Belk, which graciously sponsored the event.

PCWNC meets every second Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Registration and social time begins at 9:30 a.m. The business meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. and is followed by a buffet lunch.

PCWNC is one of the largest social clubs in the county with more than 200 active members. Dozens of club activities are scheduled each month, including card games, matinees, bowling, book club, mah jonng, Bible study, bunco, canasta and more.

WBAP’s Hal Jay on his journey from Liberal to conservative

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Fort Worth native Hal Jay can’t help but chuckle when he remembers his illustrious broadcast career began in a town called Liberal, Kansas.

“I’ve thought about that a lot, and I always laugh,” he said. “I tell people the name comes from the town being liberal with water when the cowboys came through.”

Hal said he has enjoyed every stop in his radio career, one that began by accident. When Hal was 14, he moved from Fort Worth to Kansas and worked along side his father, who was also a radio personality.

“I’d go up to the station Sunday

mornings and run the church services that used to be on every station in America,” he said. “One Sunday morning a tape broke and I was thinking what should I do? I got on the air and told my dad to come to the radio station. Those were the first words I ever said on the radio.”

From those humble beginnings, Hal has become one of the more renowned conservative radio hosts on WBAP radio 820 in Dallas-Fort Worth. His show can be heard Monday-Friday from 5 a.m.-9 a.m.

“I never planned to stay in radio. I wanted to fly, but an Air Force recruiter told me I was too tall to fly.”

So Hal did indeed stay in radio, and a legendary career was started, one that has seen him view many a sunrise as he helps listeners start their day.

Alzheimer’s patient spends precious time helping others

Jackie Spradlin, 74, has Alzheimer’s. She was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. She knows there is no cure, and it is only a matter of time before virtually everything slips away from her memory.

But Jackie does not cry. She does not question her lot in life. Instead, she smiles and makes a concerted effort to enjoy everything in her life for as long as she can, be it one day or many days.

And with that time she is putting forth a message to others with the disease that, though it is ultimately debilitating, giving up now is simply throwing away whatever beauty remains in the time that is left.

“Do you know what I’m going to do when I get home?”

Jackie asks. “I’m going to open the windows, turn off the TV, and watch for birds. I’m a big advocate of nature, and

every time I go out it reminds me of the depths of God’s love for us.”

Jackie said it is the knowledge of that love that drives her. Even as her memory slips a little more each day, she remembers that one of the reasons we were put on this earth is to help others – and she sees her time left as a chance to tell others to be less afraid and more thankful.

Jackie was familiar with Alzheimer’s even before being diagnosed. Her mother had the disease more than two decades ago and passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage.

“My mom picked up on it herself. She said ‘Some-

Recently, as I was in the middle of a workout DVD, the trainer said that we needed to get comfortable being uncomfortable. It caught my attention, not just because I was very uncomfortable at the time, but because we live in a society where we are constantly seeking comfort. When we get into our comfort zone and don’t want to budge, we can quickly become too comfortable. When we are too comfortable, we are not changing or growing. We settle for good enough and don’t push ourselves. We stay on the beaten path instead of blazing a trail. We become complacent instead of encouraging progress

and changing the world. When you get uncomfortable, you push your boundaries, and when you step out of your comfort zone, change begins to happen. Getting uncomfortable leads to growth. As painful and scary as it may seem, the results are worth it.

Sometimes in our Christian walk, we need a metamorphosis. Actually, that is what the Christian walk is all about – transformation. God takes our lives, bends us, and sometimes breaks us to bring about the change in our life that He has purposed. If we fight Him, we miss out on the blessings He has planned for us.

In a physical workout, being physically uncomfortable is where we gain increased strength, speed and agility. In relationships, being vulnerable and uncomfortable is where we create true bonds with others. In career or business, taking uncom-

fortable risks or doing work outside of our “comfort zone” is where we can advance to the next level. All of these examples are well worth the pain of change.

I am very qualified to talk about this because no one likes their comfort zone more than I do! I stand at the boundary armed, daring anything to try to force me from the safety of comfort. Fortunately, circumstances (circumstances or God?) have forced me from my comfort zone, and I have grown due to stepping out and allowing Him to make a transformation in my life. He is not

done yet. Yes, I still fight sometimes because change is scary and uncomfortable, but I know that He has a plan and a purpose in everything and my life will be better for it in the long run.

Maybe you have not reached the full potential God has for you. Are you comfortably stagnating, accepting the status quo, aspiring for nothing more in your life? Perhaps God is calling you out of your comfort zone to a new direction such as teaching, a mission trip, or feeding the homeless? Maybe your kids are grown and living their own lives and now you have time - and no excuse. What has He laid on your heart that you are shoving aside because it makes you uncomfortable to think about it? Get up, step outside of that imaginary boundary you have drawn around yourself and see what exciting things God has planned for you.

thing’s not right. I’m not recognizing people,’” Jackie recalled. “I took her straight to a neurologist.”

So when Jackie, who had overcome a stroke herself four years ago, began to recognize some of the same signs, she had herself diagnosed by both a neurologist and psychiatrist. It included a series of tests.

“I knew as we went through it that I was in trouble. Something wasn’t right,” she said. “How does anyone know something is wrong with you?

It’s your body. You just know.”

Jackie taught second grade for 27 years. She remembers telling her students not to give up when faced with a learning challenge, and now she’s telling herself the same thing.

“There really is no giving up, and I won’t give up now,” she said.

Also, for the past couple of decades she has kept what she calls “gratitude journals.” They are thoughts to remind her why she should be grateful for her life and its blessings. She relies on them more than ever now, she said.

“I’ve had so many things taken from me lately, but there is always something good to take its place.

“Time is not a friend to an Alzheimer’s patient. You look at yourself some days and say, ‘I don’t know

She has accepted that the day will come when she truly doesn’t know who she is or may fail to recognize anyone else. Among her strongest advice to others – including family and caregivers – is to also accept it right now, don’t wait.

“Until you do, you’re losing precious time,” she said.

Jackie and her husband Keith met at church after both of their spouses had passed away. Keith admits he has struggled with accepting the reality of his wife’s diagnosis, but he understands what his wife wants and believes in her mission between now and the end.

Recently, they met Alzheimer support group leader Evelyn Guerin, who lost her husband to the disease in 2005.

“In taking care of him God spoke to me. I was going to support groups myself, and now I run two groups,” Evelyn said.

The support groups are for caregivers, but Jackie made a guest appearance recently.

“It was good for the group to have her there. Most Alzheimer’s patients won’t discuss what’s going on,” Evelyn said. “Jackie’s special.”

Jackie considers exercise and rest two of her most valuable commodities. She spends at least an hour each

day on a treadmill. And Jackie is thankful for humor, finding it despite her present status. She laughed as she recalled finding several identical packages on her doorstep after she forgot she previously ordered them online.

“I don’t shop online anymore,” she said with a smile. “You can see why that might be a problem.

“But you have to keep laughing.

You have to keep smiling, and looking for ways to make others smile.”

Jackie tries to do things in sequences when it comes to everyday activities. It helps her remember better.

Janet Standifer, a specialist in dementia training, confirmed that is a method she suggests to many of her patients. For example, if they are carrying a load of laundry to be washed, say out loud what they are doing.

Janet is doing her best to help others better understand life with Alzheimer’s. She conducts a virtual dementia tour, developed by a company named Second Wind Dreams.

Diagnosed with dementia: What now?

You have just been diagnosed with dementia. At first you are in denial. You feel overwhelmed, angry, scared, and sad.

It is natural to have these feelings. Acknowledge your feelings and take time to process and understand your emotions. Your family also needs time to adjust after your diagnosis.

Learn as much as you can about dementia.

Become educated through resources, such as support groups, counselors, workshops and the internet. Ask your physician questions about your diagnosis, the available treatment options, and the benefits and risks of the options you choose.

Once you are diagnosed, you have time to get your affairs in order because dementia is a slow process and the changes will occur slowly.

Make a will, put your finances in order, and claim all of your benefits. Be sure to have Advanced Directives in place for future medical care including your wishes and appoint a Power of Attorney.

Your family may be concerned about your driving. The dementia diagnosis does not mean that your family needs to immediately start taking things away. You may be able to drive safely for some time after the diagnosis.

Check with your state licensing agency to determine if it requires you to report to the state and insurance company about the dementia diagnosis. As the dementia progresses, there will be a time that driving is no longer safe and must stop altogether. Dementia will affect your cognitive skills that negatively impacts atten-

tion, visuospatial skills, problem-solving, judgment, critical thinking skills, reaction time and rate of processing. These deficits will directly affect your ability to safely drive.

You can live alone at home without assistance if there are no safety issues, which includes your ability to manage your own medications. Take safety precautions with your physical environment. You should be able to manage your finances in the early stage of dementia and take care of your own personal needs. Once you start becoming a safety risk

Take care of yourself. Depression is very common in dementia and must be addressed by your physician. Exercise regularly and maintain the appropriate vaccinations, such as flu and pneumonia. Keep active and involve yourself as much as possible in home and community activities.

For family and caregivers, understand that you will also need support. Your loved one is unable to change, so you will need to modify the environment. Most of all, do what you can to keep a balance and maintain a positive relationship with one another.

devices that alter the senses. The tour enables the participants to experience for themselves the physical and cognitive challenges those with dementia face.

While Jackie wants her family to know what she and they are facing, she also wants them to hold onto special memories. She recently gave a leatherbound journal to each of her two sons.

It contains things they didn’t know about their mom.

“It has things like when their dad and I were dating,” she said. “Now I’ve started with my grandsons, and they have things like when one was brought home from the hospital, and the day one was adopted.

“Family has always been very important to me.

Take every picture you can, and write on every one who is in it and what was happening.”

She also stresses that if there are any fences to mend, do so as soon as possible.

“You just don’t know if there will be another day. It could all go away tomorrow,” she said.

Jackie said she is not afraid of when the day comes that there is more blankness than light in her mind. “It won’t bother me because I won’t know what’s going on,” she said with a slight chuckle.

She does, however, fear for those who will be left behind, and hopes they are as prepared as she is.

Jackie said she has faith that a phrase she shared with her grandson will be something the rest of her family and friends can hold onto for comfort long after she is gone: “You’ll always be in my heart and soul, and I’ll be in yours.”

‘Picture perfect’ example of a great father

by Deb Arwood Hoopla Correspondent The cardinal pair searched busily for a nesting place, for they knew that very soon their eggs would come. Was it chance or the Divine causing the two birds to choose our six feet tall ficus tree? That one on the back patio growing just inches off our den window – ah – a bird’s eye view. The parents worked diligently together on their nest and, right on time, three speckled eggs appeared promising three tiny, pink-skinned cardinal hatchlings.

Quickly now, grab tripod and camera – we won’t miss one single thing! One hundred thirty-eight pictures later, the answer became clear. It was God, the Orchestrator of all, whom had set this amazing

I was still at work when my cell phone rang on that day – too soon for either of us to imagine.

Remembering the Centennial celebration of 1956

The Parker County Sheriff ’s Posse Frontier Days and Rodeo are scheduled to kick off mid-June; but 63 years ago, the event was scheduled in May to close out the county’s Centennial celebration.

The planning of the celebration was headed by Grace Cartwright, who presented a cake with 100 candles at a joint meeting of the Rotary Club and Lions Club. She then convinced 76 men to pay $1 each to join the Centennial Association.

The group continued to grow after a public meeting was held at Cherry Park. Two hundred residents turned out to assist with the planning of a pageant and parade.

King of the road

On a quest for the taste of yesteryear

Decades before Cracker Barrel captured the attention of weary travelers, Texans searched the roadside for that familiar red and yellow sign promising a place to “Relax, Refresh, Refuel.”

A small diner often accompanied the gas station, but it was the store itself that most readers will vividly recall. It was packed with road trip favorites — snacks, sodas, souvenirs, nifty gadgets, and you couldn’t forget their famous pecan log rolls. At least my mother couldn’t.

On a recent drive back from Austin, she reminded me how much she loved the popular Stuckey’s treat, and it prompted a discussion of family road trips long ago.

Vacation destinations and family visits were reached in the brown Caprice Classic sedan, but there were no handheld electronic devices or incar movies to entertain us on the route. It was just the two of us kids in the back seat, where my older brother laid down the law like a tyrant

A Stuckey’s gas station and store from yesteryear. ruler. My spot was behind the driver — seating assignments were not up for debate. “Do not cross this line!” was his mantra, while pointing at a seam midway down the bench seat.

We spent time reading and seeking cars from other states. Much of our time involved Roadside Bingo. Remember? It was a square of cardboard with little red doors that would slide over a word or image of something that you were likely to see along your journey. Guess where we got those? Yep, Stuckey’s.

A lot of begging from the back seat implored the folks to stop at Stuckey’s.

When we needed gas or a bathroom “pit stop” along the way, we anxiously scanned the billboards.

Our favorite sign was plastered on the front window: “Eat Here and Get Gas!” Mom’s purchase of choice was the pecan roll. Mrs. Stuckey was famous for her cherry nougat gooeyness covered in caramel and pecans. Initially, it was made in a candy

kitchen attached to each store (there were only eight locations at the time). It became the signature specialty of the chain. Due to popularity, the demand couldn’t be met by the local kitchens, so a production factory was born.

While mom was eyeing the pecan goodies, I headed to an alcove near the bathrooms. There stood a coin-operated vending machine that sold small toys and novelty items. The cost was low and, occasionally, I was allowed to pick something. The clearest memory was of a set of two magnetic Scottie dogs—one black and one white. They were about an inch tall and an inch long. When you put them near each other, they would shoot apart. For years, I kept these tiny treasures in a small zippered pouch. I’m not sure if they came in that bag, but they sure went in and out of it many times on our long drives across Texas and up through the Smoky Mountains.

When my family moved to Parker County in 1979, there was a Stuckey’s in Weatherford. It closed by 1985 and with it went the building and its lovely stained wood ceiling that curved high SEE STUCKEY’S, P. 17

Whip up these pecan log rolls at home to get a taste of the past 1/4 cup corn syrup 1/4 cup water 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 1 egg white 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (14 ounce) package caramels 3 tablespoons water 2 cups coarsely chopped pecans Line a 9-inch loaf pan with wax paper, apply butter or cooking spray; set aside.

Combine corn syrup, water and sugar in small heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly,

to a peak. You would think living near Stuckey’s would be even better than the occasional stops in another state or town, but somehow we seldom went. I suppose it was the journey that made it special.

Business was strong for Stuckey’s from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. The owners retired in the midst of the energy crisis and sold to Pet, Inc. Slowly, the 350+ locations dwindled to less than half.

The good news is the company was recently repurchased by the Stuckey family, and their numbers are growing through franchises.

Reminiscing about these road trips made me curious. Were there any Stuckey’s locations nearby?

Where are they hiding? I soon found myself on a quest to surprise Mom with her favorite pecan log roll. Sure, there is now an option to order them on the internet, but that wasn’t going to quench my thirst for adventure.

Friends and co-workers cheered me on as they recalled their favorite Stuckey’s memories. “We always wanted sodas,” said Anne Hoscheit of Crowley. She explained that her three siblings and she enjoyed those cold drinks during hot car rides to her grandparent’s house

until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a boil. Use a pastry brush and hot water to keep sugar crystals from forming on the side of the pan.

Insert candy thermometer. Continue cooking until the mixture becomes a hard ball (255 degrees F).

Meanwhile, beat egg white and cream of tartar with heavy duty until stiff. Slowly pour syrup into egg white, beating constantly. Add extract and beat until candy forms soft peaks.

Drop spoonfuls of fondant into prepared pan. Cut into three strips lengthwise, then crosswise in center. Freeze until firm.

Line a baking sheet with wax paper, set aside. Melt caramels with water in small heavy saucepan, over low

“We loved to stop at the Stuckey’s in Gainesville,” Loretta Segler of Cleburne said. She was almost dreamy eyed as she described a “bee bubble” they had in the wall. “Even from the parking lot you could see bees swarming around the opening of a chimney-type tube atop the bright blue roof,” she said. Inside, there was a large clear plastic bubble that would allow you to see bees working in their hives and, of course, honey was sold in the store.

During my research, I emailed Stuckey’s to request photos of the store that once stood in my hometown. Jack Boucher of Stuckey’s Corporation said he was sorry to inform me they had no photos, but he understood the search for feelings of yesteryear. He reported many Stuckey’s fans have made similar inquiries. That familiar red and yellow sign was even featured in the 2018 Oscar winning movie “Green Book,” which I had just seen.

Not having much luck locating a store on the Stuckey’s website, I was going by rumor. I’d heard of a billboard in Sanger, Texas, advertising a Stuckey’s 40 miles away.

I took off. It was a mission for nostalgia and sweet memories. I had my nephew with me, trying to explain the anticipation. North of Marietta, 15 miles into Oklahoma

Arrange pecans on wax paper. Working quickly, drop 1 piece of the frozen fondant into melted caramels to coat. Roll in pecans to completely coat. Place on prepared baking sheet to set.

Cut logs into 1/2-inch slices.

Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container between layers of wax paper or freeze up to 3 months.

Much to my delight, a large display of Stuckey’s candies was just inside the door. The rack was towered by the assorted sizes of pecan log rolls. As always, the array of Stuckey’s branded souvenirs were ready for purchase: magnets, tiny license plates with first names on

them, shot glasses and coffee mugs.

Sadly, as is often the case, the experience didn’t live up to my memory. There was no coin-operated toy machine. My nephew wasn’t even excited about the Roadside Bingo cards for sale. However, I have three pecan logs in the car ready to take to Mom.

The most critical tasks you need to perform in the garden this month Every year holds new surprises for Parker County gardeners. So far, 2019 has held true to that pattern.

Cold winter.

Cool times in the spring.

Ample rains.

Who knows what summer will bring? But always there are things you’ll want to get done, and here are the most critical.

Plant: • Hot-weather annuals such as trailing lantanas, moss rose, hybrid purslane, fanflower, pentas, angelonias, fire bush, crotons, copper plants, purple fountaingrass, wax begonias, coleus and caladiums.

• New lawngrass from sod, seed or plugs. Do not allow new grass to dry out until roots are well established (usually first couple of weeks).

• Crape myrtles while in bloom to ensure color you want. Match mature size with space available.

Prune: • Strong, unwanted shoots from spring growth on shrubs, vines.

• Reshape spring-flowering shrubs and vines, but maintain natural growth forms as much as possible.

• Blackberries immediately after harvest to remove canes that just bore fruit. They will never produce fruit again.

Fertilize: • Trees, shrubs, groundcovers, annual and perennial flowers, vegetables with high-nitrogen or all-nitrogen food (according to soil test results). Note: avoid nitrogen on St. Augustine midJune through September 1 if gray leaf spot has been an issue in past years.

• Hanging baskets and patio pots with high-nitrogen, watersoluble plant food each time that you water.

• Iron supplement and soil acidifier to correct iron chlorosis (yellowed leaves with dark green veins, most prominent on newest growth first).

Timely Tips

On the lookout: • Second application of preemergent granules Dimension, Halts or Balan to turf to continue protection against crabgrass and grassburs. If you did not make first treatment in early March, there is no need to make this one.

• Early blight on tomatoes causing lower leaves to develop large yellow blotches. Use labeled fungicide. Keep foliage as dry as possible.

• Broadleafed weedkiller spray to control poison ivy, dichondra, white clover and other summer invaders of lawn. Read and follow label directions for best results.
