Business sessions included reports, candidate speeches, by-laws and budgets. Young Women in Public Affairs award recipient Saanya Subasinghe gave a presentation called “The Future in Female.” "She is a 17 year old that makes the rest of us look like we aren’t doing anything," said one club member. The convention included presentations by other scholarship winners and the installation of officers.

Cindi Neverdousky received the first-place award in Weatherford Art Association’s Artist of the Month contest for June.

Neverdousky recognized by WAA Cindi Neverdousky of Willow Park won first place in Weatherford Art Association’s Artist of the Month contest with her painting titled, “Texas BBQ.” “I was inspired by some old school still life paintings when I saw a cover of Texas Monthly,” said Neverdousky. “I’m currently working on a seafood painting with the same style.”

Neverdousky, who is married to retired Willow Park mayor Richard Neverdousky, started painting in her early 20s. “Then life got in the way,” she said. “Two boys, a career, and many other activities just took all my time.”

She retired from Fort Worth ISD in 2008 as Director of Special

Education and still works as a consultant for the Texas Education Agency. Her busy schedule leaves little time to paint, but she finds the process very relaxing.

“Painting involves the right brain. When I paint I become totally engrossed and lose myself within the painting,” she said. “There is no wall space left in my house.”

Neverdousky’s art will be at an upcoming show at The Fort Worth Public Library and at Doss Hertiage Center in January. She will also chair of the Woman’s Club of Fort Worth Art Department this year.

When she’s not painting, she and Richard enjoy traveling and are planning a trip to Paris and the Normandy coast next spring.

Who is this beauty that just celebrated her 91st birthday? n As a young girl she was a 4-H Gold Star Girl of Parker County. n Her great-great-grandfather signed the petition to form Parker County. n She founded a local business in 1958 with her late husband, and it’s still going strong. n She hosts a popular event each spring that has been featured in Texas Highways.

ave you been to a wedding shower lately? Was it anything like the one you were thrown by friends before your big day?

The presence of pastel mints may be the only similarity.

The shower of yore was a dressy event planned by the future bride’s close friends and usually led by the intended’s maid of honor. These fetes were staged in friend’s houses or a local church, and it wasn't uncommon for half of the town to attend.

Handwritten invitations were delivered. RSVPs were expected.

Some water departments in Texas would provide the addresses for all the residents so that every lady in town was invited, but no foxes were allowed in the hen house.

"The groom-to-be was very seldom invited to these things," reminded Linda Poston, whose maid of honor hosted a shower preceding her marriage to husband Craig in September of 1979.

The younger sisters and female cousins of yesteryear's brides were usually eager to be a part of the festivities, dreaming of their own nuptials and creating their own hope chests. Cooler weather and fall annuals on the way By the time August arrives, we are all looking toward fall’s cooler weather. To which we say, “Bring it on, and soon!” Parker County awaits it!

Plant: n Second round of fall vegetables, including squash, cucumbers, beans and even corn if planted first few days of August. Mid-month plant broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower from started nursery transplants. Late August plant leafy and root crops. n Fall annual flowers mid-August, including marigolds, zinnias and celosia from started nursery transplants. Buy plants in bud but not yet in bloom. n Finish planting new lawns as soon as possible so grass can establish before cool weather arrives.

You’ll see the diamond-shaped gray lesions on the leaf blades. Apply turf fungicide, but above all, don’t apply nitrogen to St. Augustine from midJune until early September. n Leafrollers are attacking foliage of sweetgums, redbuds, groundcover vinca, cannas, pyracanthas, cotoneasters and a host of other landscape plants. Once they are sequestered within the masses of leaves there is little you can do to correct the problem, but next time around you can apply a systemic insecticide such as Imidacloprid a few weeks prior to their invasion to kill them as they begin to feed. n Dallisgrass is a dark green, clump-forming weed grass that appears in any type of turf. It is perennial, so pre-emergents won’t help much. Spot treat with a glyphosate herbicide or dig it out by hand.

n Sperry’s Plant of the Month: Spider Lily They’re icons of southern gardens, and August is prime time to plant and enjoy them. Also known as “hurricane lilies” because of the fact that they so often bloom about the time the big, wet Gulf storms blow into our gardens, spider lilies are botanically Lycoris radiata.

This plant is native to Japan and was brought to America in 1854. Since then it’s been passed along from generation to generation, neighbor to neighbor. If your grandma was a southern gardener, she had these in her plantings, and odds are that you do as well.

• Spider lilies grow best in morning sun with shade in the afternoon.

• Their flower stalks pop up in late summer and early fall, followed by foliage that persists through the winter and spring. Leave the foliage in place until it turns brown in late spring.

• Flowers are usually cherry red, although pink and yellow and white forms are sold.

• Plant bulbs anytime during summer, 5 or 6 inches deep and 7 or 8 inches apart. Plant them where they can remain undisturbed for many years. They will rarely need to be dug and divided.

• They bloom best if watered well beginning in late summer, although they do require good drainage the rest of the year.

Our “Guess Who” game on P. 4 features Parker County native Mary Estelle Kemp. Mary founded Texas Butane Co. Inc. in 1958 with her late husband V. Kemp Jr. She ran the company for 40 years before handing the reins to her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Morris White.

Mary is well known for her achievements in historical preservation and hosts the Shaw-Kemp Ranch Open House every April. It’s a popular event that draws locals and residents from nearby cities and has been recognized with an award by the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce.

She’s also a member of the Parker County Historical Commission and has authored and published several books for Nebo Valley Press.

She is often referred to as the Historian of Parker County. To recognize her many contributions, the Commissioners Court proclaimed March 23, 2015 as “Mary Kemp Day.” She is very proud of this particular recognition and celebrates it every year.

In addition to her love of Parker County history, Mary enjoys quilting and raising and spending time with her family.

Parker County’s Centennial in 1956 was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that brought residents from all over the county to the courthouse square. Some current residents remember marching in the parade as youngsters. Others said they raced from one side of the square to the next in order to catch whistles shaped like ice cream cones, which were thrown from the Dairy Queen float. Their mothers purchased Vernon Kilns commemorative plates featuring the courthouse, the Buffalo Hide Wagon Train, the Masonic Institute, the Carson and Lewis Opera House, and the Confederate Monument.

The county borders were officially approved by the Texas Legislature on December 12, 1855. The location of the county seat was determined by approximately 400 settlers in an election in 1856.

The photo above shows the southwest quadrant of the square during the centennial in 1956. In the current photo (below), you can see the familiar windows of the corner building, which is now home to The Popcorn Corner.

Joyce’s favorite project is not actually a quilt. It's the joint venture that she established between the Quilter’s Guild of Parker County and Habitat for Humanity during her years serving as Comfort Quilt chair. When a Habitat house is built in Parker County, the guild presents each person who will be living in the home with a quilt.

Joyce coordinates with Habitat and reports to the guild how many and what type of quilts will be need-

ed for each home and then presents the completed quilts to the new owners at the dedication ceremony.

This is a project that is very near to her heart.

As the old saying goes, “What goes around, comes around.” Last year, Joyce had the winning ticket for the guild’s 2017 raffle quilt and was on the receiving end of a quilt presentation.

This year’s raffle quilt will be awarded on Sept. 21-22 at the guild’s juried show called “Quilts in Bloom.” Stay tuned for details!

Extension service hosts workshop on memory issues The Parker County Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service will host a two-part workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 22 and 29 that encourages participants to evaluate their own memory function, identify factors that may enhance or detract from their memory function, and find ways that may help address some of those factors.

Studies show that 80 percent of older adults complain about memory problems, but only 15 percent report them to their health professional.

Memory losses are increased by factors such as inattention, medications, anxiety or depression. Living alone, stress, illness, adapting to the loss of relationships, and the negative stereotypes of society all may affect the older person and their memory.

The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon at 604 N. Main St., Suite 200.

by Donna Tillman Pageant Coordinator About 18 years ago, a vision came to me in the middle of the night after watching an episode of Designing Women. In this episode, Bernice had entered a beauty contest at her assisted living facility.

After pondering for a few minutes, I knew that we had to try something here in Parker County. Shortly after sunup, I was making calls and sending emails to see if there was any interest. And, as they say, “the rest is history.” Our committee is now planning the 17th pageant.

We have such wonderful, beautiful, talented ladies that enter each year. They are judged on evening wear, talent presentation and interview question.

A panel of celebrity judges, escorts, pageant band, Master of Ceremonies and a bevy of dedicated volunteers make it an evening of fun, entertainment and a life time of memories. Weatherford College came on board from the very first pageant to be our host location. It has truly taken a village to make the pageant the success it has been.

From the very beginning, the pageant committee decided that the proceeds would go to our local Meals on Wheels program. To date, the pageant has donated over

My reply is always "elastic waistband slacks." It's a little known, nonscientific fact that salt air shrinks your clothing. My clothes never fit the same by the last day of the cruise!

Seriously, the most asked question is always, "What do I wear?" So, let me try to help.

Let's assume that you are taking a typical 7-night Caribbean Cruise. Remember that the weather is usually very warm and tropical. That's why the ships are cruising these waters, so let's pack for a Florida-style resort.

You probably already own all the clothes you will need.
