Local theatre seeks original one-act play about quarantine Theatre Off The Square in Weatherford may be dark at the moment, but they’re planning for the future by hosting a contest. The world is full of inspiration, and what better time to let that creativity flow?

According to a press release, TOTS has challenged you to create an original one-act play with a running time of 40-45 minutes and that represents the theme: QUARANTINE. Use the theme as an inspiration to create something inspired by the realities we face today.

Remember, it is what the theme means to you, and there is no require-

ment for your scene to take place in quarantine.

Submissions are due July 31. The finalists will be selected and announced August 15, and their finished pieces will be performed as part of a New Works Festival in 2021.

Contest details and registration will be posted on the Theatre Off The Square Facebook page.

All entrants will be considered anonymously with no consideration of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, or current participation at Theatre Off The Square.

All artists and genres are welcome.

This 1957graduate suffered a severe back injury in 1960, leaving him paralyzed for two weeks and ending his athletic career. But that didn’t keep him away from football. He’s now part-owner of the LA Express, a member of the U.S. Football League.

her military service. She also regularly attended meetings in Fort Worth for an organization called Roll Call for several years.

“It was for World War II veterans, and I don’t think we had but about 15 of us to begin with, but now we’ve added Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq,” she said. “Of course, no one’s going now because of COVID-19.”

In almost a century of living Buford has seen a lot, including the Great Depression, which started in 1929 in the United States. Her family was in the floral business.

“I vaguely remember what it was like on my family. We had just built a couple of 200-foot greenhouses. We managed to keep them, but it was tough,” she said. “People didn’t buy many flowers.”

And does she think we are in a depression - or approaching one now,

thanks to COVID-19?

“It’s too late for me to worry about that. My hair can’t be any whiter,” she said with a smile. “But this is certainly changing our lives in a lot of ways.”

Including preventing her from doing one of her favorite things, visiting the nursing homes with her singing partners. She doesn’t own a computer or cell phone - though she is a big fan of microwaves - so performing by Zoom or social media isn’t an option.

“I’m going to be back with the gospel singers, yes, but I think it’s going to be a while - at least, I hope we get to sing together again,” she said. “But now I crochet, do word search puzzles, adult coloring, and I play piano.

I only watch ‘Jeopardy’ and the news on TV.” And, of course, she sometimes sings by herself, because the Lord is always listening.

Philippians 4:4-7 Amplified Bible I think we can safely say that none of us will forget 2020. But in reading the verses above, it struck me that these verses have something for everything that has happened this year. Then again, the word of God has something for every single moment and experience of our lives because His word is all sufficient.

Rejoice in the Lord always - When it seems as though there has not been a whole lot to rejoice about this year, we are to rejoice. Always. We have the sheer delight of our Lord and Savior, and His saving grace to rejoice in, and the assurance of His peace and control in even the most difficult moments.

“We’re in an area where we don’t have to spend money to take a small church online, so our (tech) guys have been out to help,” Warren said, adding that they’ve also loaned equipment to help some churches.

“Our media team – one, we have a media team, more than one person – and second, they are young and know a lot of people. They are also eager to help in any way they can.”

Will this change the way worship services are held even as we move beyond the virus? That remains to be seen, but most believe a return to big in-person gatherings will emerge.

“I don’t think we’re going to see everybody sitting in front of a TV from now on,” Warren said. “I think gathering in person will still be the preferred format.”

last six months. Everything we put our trust in may have been shaken to the core, but our God has not. We have put our trust in things that we believed were safe and unshakable, only to watch them crumble around us. All that seemed secure was in question, and many people suffered great loss.

Through it all, one foundation has remained and that is that God is still in control. He is the One that will never be shaken and He cares about us, our hearts, and our requests. We don’t have to be anxious for anything if we leave it all in His hands.

And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, stands guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Peace is something that many us may have not felt for a while.

God’s peace – the only peace that can reassure our hearts, is ours.

Week moments “This is tougher than I thought it would be,” said my wife. “I do love you, but being in the same living space together for so long makes me a little nervous that we can make this work for much longer.”

That was on our honeymoon 40 years ago…and we are still together.

Now we really are cooped up in the same space, sheltering at home. The claim by some sociologists is that in 9 months many couples will either have a new baby or a divorce. I’m not a gambler, but I’m relatively sure neither of those will happen to us. Actually, I am 100% sure one of them won’t.

(Note: When Mary Ellen read that last sentence, she said: “That’s so sweet.” I think she missed the point of the joke.)

Here are some of the highlights for us from each day last week: Monday: I made a haircut appointment because I knew there was going to be a rush when this nightmare is over, when people can finally leave their homes.

“Buddy, it’s Dick. Do you have anything available around 2:30 on May 18?”

“Sorry, Dick. I’m booked at that time already. Could we make it a little later?”

“How about 4:30?”

“How about September 4?”

Tuesday: I thought of a funny idea for a cartoon. I can’t draw so I sent the concept to my friend Gary Varvel, political cartoonist extraordinaire. Here was the notion: Just like there is a gun buyback program in some cities, I envisioned a mask buyback program where the government encourages people to return their masks for cash, so doctors and nurses can use them. In the cartoon, we see bank robbers waiting in line to get their money.

Not funny? Hmmm… that’s also what Gary said.

Summer garden chores Summer is a pretty sure thing here in North Texas. Wise gardeners keep their hoses handy, sunscreen nearby and hats on their heads.

Plant: • Summer color, whether it’s a bed or a patio pot, choose plants that can handle the heat. Some of the best include purslane, moss rose, trailing lantanas, angelonias, fanflowers, pentas, firebush, copper plants and purple fountaingrass for the sun and wax begonias, coleus and caladiums in shade.

• New lawngrasses, but be prepared to water them often as they’re getting started. Young grass still has shallow roots that don’t yet extend very far into the soil.

Prune: • Shrubs to remove erratic new shoots. Avoid formal shearing whenever possible.

• Blackberries to remove canes that have just borne fruit. Cut to ground. They’ll never bear fruit again.

Feed: • Turfgrass, trees, shrubs and groundcovers with all-nitrogen fertilizer with as much as half of that N
