Silver Sisters salute vets throughout metroplex

by John English Hoopla Correspondent Sometimes in life, things work together beautifully.

Janice Beckcom and Sandy Flowers understand this well, as the junior college senior dance instructors combined two of their classes to form one of the most requested song and dance groups in North Texas.

The Silver Sisters of Fort Worth was formed by Beckcom, 70, and Flowers, 74, eight years ago when Beckcom, a belly dancing instructor and retired police officer, and Flowers, a dance instructor for a class called “Movin’ and Groovin,’” decided to team up.

The Silver Sisters typically book about 175 shows a year, and Beckcom said their first performance, interestingly enough, fell on November 11.

“It happened that we had a bash on Veterans Day,” Beckcom said. “The program person wanted me to put on a show, and I said, ‘Uh, you don’t belly dance for Veterans Day. It’s not appropriate.’ But she told us we were their only entertainment and asked us to come up with something.”

Necessity is the mother of invention, and the Silver Sisters of Fort Worth culminated, performing Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy at its inaugural show.

“We did the one song, and we were blown away,” Beckcom said. “People started coming toward us and taking pictures.

It was freaking us out, because when we do belly dancing, they watch us for a few minutes, but then they start doing their own thing...but when we did that song, we had eyes glued. Everybody was paying attention.”

“He said, ‘Y’all need to take that on the road, girls. Take it on the road!’” Beckcom said.

And take it on the road they did.

The Silver Sisters of Fort Worth performs at nursing homes, senior centers, churches, birthday parties, VFW Halls and essentially any place where there are veterans.

The group sings along with the Andrews sisters, as well as music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, including Chatanooga Choo Choo, Soldier Boy and of course, Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight, which is the final song in the group’s half-hour sets.

“We get all kinds of reactions,” Beckcom said. “We have laughter and tears. People will remember a loved one that died while serving. But everyone that we meet loves us. They’re glad we came and they want us

to come back.”

One especially touching moment for Beckcom came when the spouse of a retired veteran who had recently passed away came up to her after a show and told her that their performance brought back so many memories of her and her husband’s life together and thanked them for doing what they do.

Flowers, who serves as the assistant director of Silver Sisters, said the group takes performing very seriously.

“We do it because we love our country,” Flowers said. “When I was growing up in the 60s, during the Vietnam era, Bob Hope always took people over to entertain the troops. A lot of us don’t seem to do as much for veterans, and we just wanted to do something.”

Members of the group are 55 years of age and older, including one member who is 93, and last year alone, the Silver Sisters performed four different shows

on Veterans Day. Flowers, whose father served in WWII and brother was a member of the United States Navy, said that for most of the members, it is deeply personal.

“The most important thing for us is that veterans and their families know how much we care about them,” Flowers said. “All of us in the troupe are senior citizens, so we went through Vietnam and Korea.

We had husbands or brothers or boyfriends who served. It meant something, and we want them to know that we care.”

The Silver Sisters of Fort Worth practice at the Lake Worth Senior Center for an hour and half on Tuesday mornings beginning at 10 a.m.

Azle resident recalls the gender equality war at the end of WWII Henrietta Morrison has done a lot in 104 years, but she’s most proud of what she and her coworkers accomplished shortly after World War II. Henrietta was slicing bacon at Swift & Company in St. Paul, Minnesota, during the war. She and other women were encouraged to take on jobs outside the home when so many men went off to war. It is estimated that six million women entered the workforce during that time.

But when the men returned home, some of the women had grown to rely on the income those jobs provided. Many had lost their husbands in the war.

As a result, there was a job shortage. And Swift & Company, which had survived those difficult years thanks to women like Henrietta, seemed anxious for the men to return to their previous positions.

Now sitting in her cozy suite at Eagle Crest Villa Senior Community in Azle, Henrietta

recalled the days she and other women at Swift were forced to fight to keep their employment.

“When the war was over, we had seniority over those boys who had left for the war…so the company tried to get rid of us,” she said.

“In the meat packing industry, there’s a lot of jobs women couldn’t do,” she explained.

3 Fools playing on three stools near you

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Over the past two decades, 3 Fools on 3 Stools has performed throughout the metroplexand seen numerous members come and go. The one consistent has been Willow Park resident Doc Wesson.

“3 Fools on 3 Stools is one of the best experiences of my career, an extremely talented trio with great vocals, excellent musicianship, and humor,” he said.

The current line-up includes Bubba Stephens and Kerry Williams.

“Both are a pleasure to work with and they have taken the show to a whole new level. The Fools are flat out fun!” Doc said enthusiastically.

Doc plays guitar and sings, Stephens is lead guitar and also sings, while Williams plays bass and also provides vocals.

Doc has performed all over the world, but now he and his fellow “fools” perform mostly in and around Fort Worth. He found his way to Cowtown after hosting a morning radio show on KSTV in Stephenville for a while.

“When I got back into playing music, Fort Worth was a welcoming city,” he said with a smile.

If you can’t find them playing locally, Doc said it’s because they’ve taken off to South Padre Island, which they will sometimes do in the winter, or to New Mexico and Colorado sometimes in the summer.

And when they are in town, not only do they play in clubs and honky tonks, they are also available for corporate and private events. Just visit www.3fools.net or www. docwesson.com as both have their schedule listed and you can make bookings there. Doc also performs solo, and you can find his schedule on his website.

The band has also recorded four albums, “Tacky Tunes From Texas,” “Under Covers,” “Fabricating Fame,” and “Cocktails and Waitresses.” All are available online.

“Playing with Doc Wesson in the 3 Fools on 3 Stools Show brings together a very high level of music, vocals, comedy, and musicianship, unlike any show I’ve ever been a part of,” said Stephens, who joined the group recently following the retirement of “Diamond” Jim Richmond. “We each have our own accolades, our own styles, and strengths, so there are never any egos to contend with.

That way we can relax and focus on our shows. Doc also has written the shows, and most of the material is original that Doc has written specifically for having fun. It’s as fun to play as it is to listen to.”

And Doc said it has definitely been a fun ride. Ask him to tell you a story or two and his response is, “Do you have time for a few beers?”

Doc’s been in love with music ever since he was a youngster. He said it all started when he was in the sixth grade.

“I was part of a band called The Apaches. We weren’t very good, but we were real loud,” he said with a laugh.

And they were very inspirational to Doc, who has gone on to inspire many other musicians himself, including Williams.

“Three years ago, I joined 3 Fools on 3 Fools and the man with the plan, Mr. Doc Wesson. My first show with him was my first time meeting him. I knew none of his originals and had no idea what to expect,” Williams said. “It took about 30 seconds of the first song to realize I was with the right people.

“Not only is Doc the hardest working individual I know business and entertainment wise, but he also has a genuine passion for his craft and his musicians. I’ve played with several bands playing different styles and genres, but The Fools are the only orchestra that plays it all. I am proud to be a Fool.”

Stephens said the best part is “We get paid to dress up like ‘Fools’ and enjoy some comedy, yet we make some very serious music and vocal harmony.”

Doc and his buddies are likely playing somewhere tonight, making the crowd laugh and tap their feet. He’s still good friends with every “Fool” he’s performed with, and he looks forward to making more friends before it’s all over.

“The best part has been meeting and becoming friends with all the musicians and singers over the years, being pulled out of my comfort zone and exposed to every aspect of life from the worst bar on the planet to being invited into the homes of the wealthiest clients you could imagine,” he said. “Meeting Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, opening for ZZ Top, playing on the Grand Ole Opry and being in the house band at The Legendary Palomino Club in North Hollywood, California are a few great memories.”

As he leaves to prepare for the Fools’ next gig, he smiles and says, “Life ain’t no dress rehearsal, make every day count!”

Citrus, Mango and Pineapple Salsa Recipe adapted from becomingness.com 1 1/4 cup fresh pineapple, diced 1 1/4 cup fresh mango, diced 2 tomatoes 1/2 red onion, diced 1 jalapeno, finely chopped 1 tablespoon coriander 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon lemon juice sea salt, to taste fresh cracked pepper, to taste tortilla chips, for serving In large bowl, combine pineapple, mango, tomato, onion, jalapeno, coriander, lime juice, lemon juice and salt and pepper, to taste. With rubber spatula, mix all ingredients together.

Taste and season with additional salt and pepper, if desired.

Serve with tortilla chips.

This salsa is a great topper for grilled chicken. Add it to a fajita plate or serve it over cream cheese with crackers. It’s also good with shrimp or fish tacos. Whirl it in the blender with a little vinegar and oil for a lovely vinegarette for your next salad.

You can even use it to glaze a ham, or throw it into the slow cooker with your favorite meatballs. Mix it in with yogurt. One home chef even uses this salsa and whipped topping on pound cake. With so many options, we’re sure you’ll be making another batch soon.

Get motivated by attending a six-week writers’ circle If you haven’t read a story by Carmen Goldthwaite, you probably just got to Texas. The top-selling author of heroic Texas women’s stories has published columns and anthologies for magazines like Fort Worth Texas, Persimmon Hill, and American Cowboy. She’s also written several best-selling books, and now, her monthly in-person writing classes are back.

After a brief hiatus, Goldthwaite was excited to talk about the return of her in-person Writers’ Circles.

“We gather in small groups of writers that I lead in COURTESY learning and advanc- Carmen Goldthwaite leads six-week ing skills and talents, writing sessions. meeting weekly for six-week sessions,” she explained. “I look forward to sharing writing tips, information and techniques, and a few laughs when we gather.”

The Tuesday group gathers at 7 p.m. There is a “hybrid session,” from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. both in-person and on Zoom on Wednesdays. The Thursday session takes place on Zoom only at 7 p.m.

The sessions encourage and inspire writers, and everyone enjoys the fellowship.

“Until I had the good fortune to join with others in Carmen Goldthwaite’s Writers’ Circle (teaching circle), I was one of those writers who scribbled poems on the back of used envelopes, wrote essays without attempting re-writes and dreamed of someday writing a book,” said Carol Durham Henderson.

“And now, four years later, under Carmen’s tutelage, I have completed that long-dreamed-of book.”

Each six-week session costs $100. The current session started June 21, but another will be starting soon.

“As facilitator/teacher, I discuss some element of story and/ or style each week, with printed material for participants as ‘keepers.’ Then writers read their work and we all discuss both what works well and where an improvement can be made,” Goldthwaite said.

Littleton’s work shows the growth of her hometown

Virginia Ann (Rawlins) Littleton, affectionly known as V.A. Littleton, has lived her entire 98 years as a native of Weatherford. Her husband for 63 years was Mark H. Littleton, (a WW-II vet, businessman and former mayor of Weatherford), until his passing in 2008. V.A.’s grandfather, Alex Rawlins, founded Rawlins Monuments on Palo Pinto Street in 1887 and passed the reins in 1920 to his two sons, Frank and Bert, V.A.’s father. However, V.A. recalls that as a little girl, it was her grandfather that would show her how he drew designs for stone monuments. She would then do drawings herself on the back of church bulletins. Her interest in art was later enhanced with her design classes as part of her home economics education at the University of Texas. This training served her well when she contributed her share of design work to her family’s monument business.

As V.A. developed her drawing skills to include pen and india ink and watercolor, she also developed an interest in Parker County cemeteries and old historic buildings and homes. These old buildings and Weatherford scenes became the subjects of many of her works. From November 2008 to mid January 2009, a retrospective was held at the Doss Heritage and Culture

Volunteering brings joy to Tammy Lovell – and helps her community “I just think God’s had a plan for this, and I don’t think it was any one person,” said tireless volunteer Tammy Lovell on the founding of Mineral Wells Center of Life.

It all started about 12 years ago while she was volunteering for the food bank at First United Methodist Church. She was asked to attend a meeting at The Black Horse Café in Mineral Wells. The meeting included of various people from charitable organizations who had the goal of centralizing all their services in one location.

“I think He put different people there at certain times and they just kind of all came together, and I don’t think it was a coincidence we just kind of met and connected.”

It was a collection of passionate people who wanted to solve a problem through service. She liked what she heard and continued to attend the meetings. They decided that they wanted to model their charity after The Center of Hope in Weatherford, a place where food, clothing, and assistance for people in need would all be under one roof. They called it Mineral Wells Center of Life. It wasn’t easy though.

“It was tough because there was no money – there was no anything. But after that meeting, the next day, Ray Mays (First Baptist Church) comes in and hands me a stack of papers, and says, ‘Here it is, this is how you do it,’ and I

wouldn’t take the papers! And he’s like, ‘I’ll just hold these,’ but then he started filing for things and things just started happening.”

Tammy is quick to point out that a lot of people worked to bring this project to life. Sometimes, things didn’t look like they would work out.

“Originally, a bank wouldn’t loan the money because we had no credit, we had no history, we had no anything,” she said.

“We had two years to raise the money, and it was a lot of money,” she said. “We never did raise the money when it’s all said and done.”

Yet, things slowly started to fall into place. They sold some property and took on a renter, but sometimes the way things were working out didn’t really make sense in the natural.

“It was God’s plan, it was a miracle because otherwise there’s no way it would have worked. God wanted it to happen because there’s no way we could have done it,” she said.

“A lot of the people that ended up on the original board or trying to get Center of Life going were at that Black Horse meeting years ago.”

Tammy served 10 years on the board of Center of Life, worked with several committees trying to grow downtown Mineral Wells, worked with Backpack Buddies getting food to children in need, and served at the food bank. She stepped

The success of the business and the love of the people of Mineral Wells is what inspired her to give back to the community. And she’s still serving. She does work with Zonta, taking care of women in the community and delivering meals on wheels.

We all thirst Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Isaiah 55:1-2 It is hot in Texas. The plants and grass are pretty desperate for some relief from the blistering heat of the July sun. Today there are a lot of people desperately thirsty, but they are thirsty for a different kind of water.

They are desperately thirsty for the living water, from the well that never runs dry, and for meaning and purpose in life.

We are all searching, looking for relief. Stopping at one fountain after another, we never find the one that satisfies until we get to the One who gives living water that brings new life. Drinking from the wrong fountains only increases our thirst and never satisfies. And yet, we continue to drink our own water, at great cost, without taking what God provides freely.

The thirst within us causes us to search with an incessant quest for something that will satisfy; yet we search without finding satisfaction. The evidence of our searching is scattered all around us in closets and garages and resumes. What

we thought was our treasure has now become our trash.

We need something beyond our own capacity to provide for ourselves to satisfy this deep craving of our soul. God has what we need. The prerequisite for coming to receive is not do we have enough money, but do we realize that He is what we need?

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Mark 8:36-37 We all know we need something, but sometimes we

don’t know what or where to find it. We are thirsty, poor, and powerless. While we are the people with the highest world income and resource, we are so very poor. In the midst of our abundance there is the reality of our poverty of spirit and emotion. The basis of need is the dry thirst of EMPTINESS. And when it is unfulfilled, it will rare its ugly head and scream until you fill it with something. The more you fill it with what does not satisfy, the louder it screams for more. It’s like drinking salt water when you are dying of thirst. It will only make you more thirsty and unfulfilled.

God can change your life if you are thirsty, needy, frustrated, empty and recognize that need. If you are willing to receive His supply, COME TO THE WATER of His grace, repent of the sin of pride, receive His forgiveness and follow His direction for your life. The fulfillment you are seeking is straight ahead, flowing from the fountain that always satisfies and never runs dry.

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. John 7:37b-38

Old-Fashioned Raptor’s Tooth Road Trip D

id you hear that growl? Yes, it was everyone at the gas pump. It’s true, gas is high, but we’ve created a summer roadtrip that’s “monster”ously fun, yet easy on the wallet.

All stops are within 200 miles of the Hoopla readership area. Tickets at many stops are $7 per person or less, and every stop is appropriate for all ages, so take the grandchildren – or don’t.

You’ll have fun either way.

You can use our route, which we’ve appropriately named the Raptor’s Tooth Route, or create your own. You won’t believe there are so many ferociously fascinating stops this close to home!

1. Fort Worth Museum of Science and History 1600 GENDY STREET • FORT WORTH Chances are you’ve been to here. Or have you? The museum was renovated and, in late 2009, many of the exhibits moved into a new building. While several exhibits come and go throughout the year, some of these gigantic dinosaur skeletons have amazed generations, and DinoLab and DinoDig are permanent exhibits. So why not start by spending an hour or two visiting the exhibits right here in DFW? Open: Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2. Mineral Wells Fossil Park 2375 INDIAN CREEK ROAD • MINERAL WELLS This primitive dig site allows you to keep whatever fossils you find. Knee pads, small gardening tools, and small zip bags are recommended. Visitors often find ancient sea species of crinoids (sea lilies), echinoids (urchins), brachiopods, pelecypods (clams and oysters), bryozoans, corals, trilobites (arthropods), plants and even primitive sharks.

swimming, fishing and paddling are also allowed. There’s an intrepetive center or download the phone app to guide you through the park and tell you about each exhibit. Only have a little bit of time to make the entire roadtrip? Take the turn off of Highway 281 toward DinoWorld, the dinosaur museum next to the state park. They have life-size dinosaurs out front. It’s a perfect place to take a selfie and head on toward Waco. Be advised, DinoWorld has an additional entry fee of roughly $15 per person, but there’s plenty to see in the park without going inside DinoWorld.

4. Mammoth National Monument 6220 STEINBECK BEND DRIVE • WACO If you’ve never been to the Mammoth Monument, you’re in for hours of fun. Even though it’s located by the state park, there is no state park fee to visit the Mammoth Monument.

There is a “dig shelter fee,” but it’s dirt cheap (pun intended).

The collection includes paleontological finds from around the world, but their main goal is to highlight the diverse and noteworthy fossil diversity of Texas.
