Carrol Richardson wins first place in monthly art contest Carrol Richardson has always loved being outdoors. In fact, it was nature which inspired him to pick up a paintbrush 16 years ago.

“One of my goals in painting is to capture the many moods of nature and share it with the observer,” said Carrol. “I also like to add interest by incorporating people, animals or buildings into my artwork.”

Carrol said it was local artists Dan Brown and Martha Spurlock who first taught him how to paint.

Although he resides in Benbrook, Carrol drives here nearly every

week to paint with his Weatherford friends.

Carrol says you should not shy away from starting a new hobby, regardless of your age or talent. “If you want to paint beautiful paintings, it is something you can do too, but it takes a lot of work. You must put in a lot of time painting to be successful.”

Carrol is pictured with a painting titled, “Early Snow,” which was recently awarded first place in Weatherford Art Association’s Artist of the Month contest.

Martha McClung’s postcard collection takes us on a trip down memory lane

From the day she arrived in 1951, a love affair began between Martha McClung and the town of Weatherford.

Good luck finding someone who knows more about the area than Martha. Though she was 27 years into life before she set foot in this town, it’s as though the two were always meant to be together.

“I wasn’t born here, but I will proudly die here,” Martha, now 95, said. “Of course, I’m going to hang on and enjoy my beautiful Weatherford for a while longer.”

Martha no longer drives. A few years ago she moved into Martin Crest assisted living facility, where she said she “looks forward to their great breakfast every morning.” However, she still gets around town, thanks to friends and the facility’s regular outings.

And she will gladly take anyone on a trip through Weatherford history if they want to stop by and sit with her as she watches her collection of slides. They were created from her photograph and postcard collection, which her son takes care of in his home in San Antonio.

“My husband and I collected postcards for many years.

It started when I began teaching Texas history (in the mid1960s),” she said. “I focused on Weatherford, and he was more Christmas and New Year’s.”

Bill passed away in 2002, but together they built quite an extensive postcard collection. They also co-authored a book in 1977 about the history of the first 140 years of First Baptist Church, where she is still a member.

“We did a lot of research for that, and we used a lot of my postcards in it,” she said.

She also has a collection of books about Texas. They all have one thing in common.

“I won’t buy one if it doesn’t mention Weatherford,” she said.

Martha used to regularly give speeches and presentations about the history of Weatherford. Those aren’t common anymore, but that hasn’t stopped her from continually updating herself on the city and its growth.

“I’m considered one of the old-timers now,” she said with a grin. “But with all those years come a lot of memories.

“When I moved here in 1951, it was a small town. We’ve seen all the changes. We watched it grow up. It’s incredible, the growth.”

Martha’s first job in Weatherford was as the coach of the Weatherford College Lady Coyotes basketball team from 1951-56, reviving a program that had been dormant for years. Bill was a dean at the college and would help as her assistant coach.

Long before their current campus was built on the hilltop, she coached the team in the old wooden gym on South Main Street. The team was known as the Cayettes her first season.

In fact, Martha had a player in her first season at Weatherford College who went on to make history. Leta Andrews became the winningest basketball coach ever with 1,416 victories in 51 seasons, most of them at Granbury High School.

“I tried to mimic her because of the love she had for people,” Leta said. “She cared for us a lot. Here I am, a little girl from Granbury, driving over to school, and she just took me under her wing. And I don’t think she forgets anything ever. She’s always amazed me with her memory. It doesn’t surprise me that she knows so much about Weatherford history.”

Martha laughed and said, “I taught Leta everything she knows.

Martha said she sometimes bumps into her former players and students. True to her style, she often remembers them.

“A lot of them have mothers out here (at the nursing home),” she said.

Those early days with the Lady Coyotes are just one of many stories Martha has to tell about the growth of her beloved city. She quit coaching after five seasons to focus on raising her children, but later joined the Weatherford ISD, teaching Texas history at the only junior high in town.

Still, all the while, she was taking note of what was happening in Weatherford. For example, she has plenty of photos from when it was known as the Watermelon Capital of the World.

Debra Camp teams up with the Blackwood Brothers in Tennessee

Debra Camp started singing when she was 4 years old.

“I would sing to the neighbors. I’d sing Buck Owens’ ‘Tiger by the Tail,’ some Loretta Lynn,” Debra said.

Now, 55 years later, she’s still belting out spiritual tunes to anyone who will listen. And a lot of people do.

Debra, a contemporary worship artist, has released three albums, her first titled simply “Debra Camp,” followed by “Overtaken” and “Washed.”

Her biggest single to date is “Hallelujah to the King.”

Debra just returned from Nashville, where she recorded her next album at the OmniSound Studios and the legendary Hilltop Recording Studios. She collaborated with Mark Blackwood and the Blackwood Quar-

tet, one of America’s most popular gospel groups. .

“I’m going to go more toward Christian country and Christian gospel,” she said referring to the upcoming album.

Those who know Debra well aren’t surprised by her passion. She comes from a musical family. Both parents were musicians and singers as were others on both sides of her family.

“It’s who I was meant to be,” she said. “I believe God created each of us with a plan, and we need to listen.”

Her mother, Mary Shirley, still performs and sings in a band at age 77.

She is also thinking about recording an album, Debra said.

“She is so fantastic. I draw so much strength from her,” Debra said.

She also draws inspiration from her husband of 40 years, Billy. The SEE CAMP, P. 9

Another day begins and I give thanks for it. My brief time alone with God this morning must provide me strength sufficient for the day.

couple has two sons, Cody and Dustin, six grandchildren, and her “daughterin-love” Kaycie (Dustin’s wife).

Debra says it was her strong roots in Southern Baptist and Pentecostal churches that led her to join others with the grand vision of starting a local church in 2000. The church is now known as Grace Community Fellowship, and she was a worship leader there for some time.

“We started at Weatherford Title on Palo Pinto Street with about 35 people,” she said.

Today, she leads her own ministerial organization, Debra Camp Ministries, which she started in 2011, with a mission of “healing hope inspiration through worship and music.”

Her pet project under that umbrella is Women Unite Now, an annual conference with a mission of “breaking down denominational and racial walls, and to come together as one body of worship.”

For an eighth consecutive year, worship leaders from a variety of churches will gather together, sharing one cause.

This year’s event is set for Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center.

“We’ve had some wonderful nights of worship,” Debra said, noting that

And though Debra hasn’t officially been dubbed a preacher, she will admit that is what she does. And she loves it, thinking of her grandmother as inspiration.

“I guess there’s really not a difference between preaching and being a worship leader - certainly not in the way my grandmother would do it,” Debra said. “She also started her own church (in Burleson, no longer in existence). My grandfather played the lead guitar in the band.”

Debra is much more than a singer.

She plays piano and has taught the instrument to others.

“I started taking piano lessons when I was 6 and I stayed with it,” she

recalled. “I think it’s very important that children learn an instrument.”

She also writes many of her own songs. She said her favorite is “I Think About the Cross” (co-written with Ken Halford).

Though Debra has yet to win any major awards, she said that is not the purpose for her music.

“That would be awesome, sure, but I love to touch lives with my music.

That’s the main thing,” she said.

She also hasn’t toured much outside of the local area, but that may change when the new album comes out. She said she plans on a bigger promotional tour.

“This is a great season for me. I don’t take life so seriously any more, don’t sweat the small stuff,” she said.

“I’m happier than I’ve ever been, and my greatest days are ahead of me.”

Consider every guest when planning July 4th celebration The 4th of July is well on its way and friends and families are preparing for the celebration. Parties, music, parades and fireworks! We all love them, so we think...

But loud music, darkness and fireworks may not be fun for everyone, especially if you are an elder, a veteran with PTSD, and/or an individual who has dementia. So when planning your activities, take into consideration who is going to be involved – you may need to modify your plans so everyone can enjoy their time together.

If your loved one is living with dementia and/or is a veteran who has PTSD, you might be better off avoiding fireworks. Consider going away during this period of time to a quieter place. The loud noises may trigger PTSD, memories, fear and anxiety.

Other things you can do, especially if your elder is living alone, is to remind him or her about the holiday and that they will hear fireworks. Prepare them by discussing what is going to happen.

If the elder is with you at the fireworks display, suggest ear protection. Watch for signs of distress and make sure he or she doesn’t wander off into the crowd. Plan an exit strategy if it becomes too overwhelming.

For someone with dementia and/or PTSD, I recommend stay-

Be aware of your loved one’s state of being when these activities are occurring simultaneously. Crowds, loud noises, unfamiliar places, and uncertainty can create an unpleasant environment for your loved one, causing anxiety and fear. If you have concerns, a better solution may be to celebrate in a more controlled environment with a small group of people.

FINALLY a way to fix the PAIN of a BULGING DISC Are you suffering from back pain, arm or leg pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs?

MYTH: “I must have done something wrong to damage my DISC.” FACT: Physical work or simply sitting at a desk for long periods can lead to Bulging DISCs. Accidents and trauma can also be the culprits. Comfort Quilt Program making a difference all across county

by Kay Burleson Quilter’s Guild of Parker County The comfort quilt program plays an important role in the mission of the Quilter’s Guild of Parker County.

Guild members make quilts, large and small, to give away to those in the community who need them. Nursing centers, Grace House, Pythian Home, Center of Hope, Habitat for Humanity and the Weatherford Police Department assist in distributing these quilts.

Judy Fitzgerald, the current chairperson of the program, reports 2018 was a record year with 300 quilts being donated to the community.

This year will be about the same with the guild having already given away 152 quilts in 2019.

Judy has experienced some heartwarming moments during her time as the comfort quilt chairperson. She shared how much the new

mothers at Grace House enjoy picking out the baby quilt they want for their little ones, and what a great time the ladies in the nursing centers have seeing the quilts and reminiscing about their own quilting days. They often share stories with Judy about their family quilts. During a trunk show at a nursing facility, one resident welcomed presenters into her room to see quilts she had made herself.

Police officers carry small quilts and stuffed animals to give to misplaced children, and a new quilt is made for each Habitat for Humanity family member when their home is completed.

Campfire Stories ‘Six men and a mule dead in accident at Franco Switch’ Parker County, Texas June 28, 1911 A terrible accident has befallen the community of Franco Switch leaving six families of local farmers grieving for those who were lost in this tragic, senseless disaster.

Mr. Jode Martin and his 11-yearold son Clyde were eye witnesses at the scene and gave this account of the calamity.

“T’was the promise of a beautiful day indeed,” declared Jode in his voice thick with a rich Irish brogue.

Me an’ the lad here was waiting our turn to load our watermelons onto a boxcar to ship back East to the Yankees.

“As any fool would be knowin’, the rains came all year at just the right time to give us farmers a bountiful crop of huge melons. The biggest melons ever seen by mortal man, they were.

“Aye, the watermelons were so big they couldn’t be lifted by any one man by himself. So we used planks to roll them out of the wagons and then rolled the melons over to some planks going up into the boxcar.

We placed a cowhide sling over the watermelon much like you would put a pebble in a sling shot. Attached to the cowhide sling was ropes which run in one door of the boxcar and out the other door, where the ropes were tied to a mule.

“Me boy Clyde here was riding atop the mule and it was his job to get the mule to pull the melons into the boxcar.

“T’was quite simple really, we’d put the melon in the sling, yell for Clyde to make the mule pull the melon inside. Once the melon was inside, we’d

Where do we go from here?

The first half of 2019 was odd.

Cold spells cheated Parker County out of some of our spring.

Rainy weather took away many of our weekends in April and May. And now here we are wondering how the second half of the year is going to treat us.

But gardeners don’t have the luxury of being able to look into the future. We take what we’re given and we move on from there.

I hope these guidelines will help you.

Plant: • Hot-weather annual color including lantana, purple fountaingrass, firebush, copper plant, pentas, fanflowers, angelonias, Cora periwinkles (perfectly draining soils only), moss rose and hybrid purslane.

• Crape myrtles while nurseries have their best selections.

Choose for color, but also select for mature size so you’ll never have to commit “topping.”

• New lawns from sod or seed.

Water new plantings for short intervals morning and night for first two weeks to prevent new roots from drying out.

n Fanflower (Scaevola) I first met this plant when a grower friend of mine handed me one in a hanging basket and told me it was “the newest thing – just in from Australia.” It was the selection “Blue Wonder,” and I grew it and absolutely loved it.

The next year I bought more, but I found 4-inch pots. I planted some into more baskets, but I put many into pots, and a bunch went directly into the ground. And behold, they all did really well.

Sometime a year or two later, I found an improved strain called “New Blue Wonder” and then one or two others, and I’ve been growing fanflowers pretty much ev-

ery year since. Why you should be growing it, too…

• Blue flowers are hard to come by, especially in summer, when we need their cooling effects.

• It combines well with just about any other floral color.

• It grows best in morning sun, afternoon shade. Some of our bloomers can’t take that much shade.

• It’s a great low, trailing plant.
