A Love Renewed Edwina Himes follows her heart and returns to theatre COURTESY PHOTO

O

nce upon a time, life got in the way of Edwina Himes’ love for theatre. Now, it plays a major role. The 65-year-old actress joined Theatre Off The Square (TOTS) in Weatherford four years ago. Since then, she has been an instrumental part of the organization, from starring onstage to working backstage, and even serving on the board of directors. “I was interested in high school - about a million years ago - did a little in college, but then I got busy with life,” Edwina said with a laugh. “Lisa Cockerel, the theatre teacher at Peaster, gave me my first adult role, Borachio in ‘Much Ado About Nothing.’ I also did many shows with Nancy McVane ( former WC director). Then, I received my first role with TOTS.” The timing, as they say, was just right. “I had lost weight, felt more confident and

decided it’s what I wanted to do,” she said, adding that when the curtains went up on her first production, “I was terrified and elated all at once. It was a rush, fun and fulfilling.” She was hooked. In her first TOTS production, she had the lead role in the comedy “Spreading It Around.” Fueled by her excitement, she ran for the board of directors and was elected the following October. In between, she volunteered and worked backstage on some productions. Now, she’s in her second term on the board. “Edwina is an integral part of the Theatre Off The Square family,” said TOTS President Laurie Jones. “As a member of the board of directors, she is very busy helping with all aspects of running the business. Edwina is also involved with the creative part of the business by serving in various roles in our production staff.”

As part of TOTS’ holiday festivities in December, Edwina served on the planning committee for the Red and Black Gala fundraiser. It was part of the world premiere for Jones Hope Wooten’s play “A Double Wide Christmas.” The evening was guest hosted by legendary comedienne Ruth Buzzi and local TV personality Tammy Dombeck. “I have loved Ruth Buzzi ever since her ‘Laugh-In’ days. Meeting her was a great treat,” Edwina said. Edwina has a pretty big fan club herself . “I’m married to Robert Himes, the most forgiving and gentle-natured man I know, thank God, or I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have,” Edwina said with a smile. She also has six children and six grandchildren. “And, by the grace of God, I still have my dad, Edwin Scruggs,” she said. The support of her family, she says, has been vital to her success as an actress and now director. “Being on stage is always a blast and a challenge, but I really found my niche last spring when I directed ‘The Taming of The Shrew.’” That show was part of TOTS’ first Shakespeare Festival at Weatherford’s Heritage Park this past spring. The event was a success and has resulted in expansion for the second year. “This year, it will be two days of fun instead of one, and it will be called The Renaissance Fair, Shakespeare Festival and Crafters Market at Heritage Park Weatherford,” she said. “We very much appreciate her idea and direction in bringing Shakespeare to our repertoire of productions,” Jones said. “The endeavor was a success at Weatherford’s new amphitheater last spring, and Edwina will lead us again into the world of Shakespeare in 2018.” From now until Feb. 4, Edwina is directing “Anne of Avonlea” on the TOTS main stage. When she’s not performing or helping with a show, Edwina enjoys singing, making mosaic stained glass tables, shopping and playing video games. One of her favorite parts of being involved in theatre is working with younger people. “Working with the younger people at TOTS makes life much more enjoyable,” she said.

“Their willingness to do everything needed to get our productions done is inspiring. They have great ideas and love being part of the TOTS family.” Edwina encourages others to get involved in TOTS and/or other theatre groups around the area. She stresses that even if you’re not one to be on stage, there are other opportunities to get involved. “It is a great group of people,” she said. “Also, if you volunteer to help with a show, you can see the play for free. We’re always glad for new folks, new ideas and great friendships.” While she’s not ready to stop and reflect on her entire life for many more years, she does say that entering a new phase of life has provided some pleasant and new advantages. “I realize everything will work out if you give it time,” she said, stopping to smile, “Okay, being retired with no one pushing me makes me much happier, too.”

Harbingers of Spring Who needs a groundhog? These beauties promise warmer weather’s on the way Some plants put on a show in JanuCommon ary and February, a time when most other ornamental plants are dorGround mant. I call these the “Harbingers of Spring,” as they let us know spring is just around the corner. All of the plants described here are in my garden, and I’m waiting for them to emerge any day now. Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles japonica) This favorite can be found in the yards of many older homes in Weatherford. It’s the first shrub to bloom with pink blooms from head to toe. For 11 months of the year, it is pretty non-descript and best used as an understory shrub or in a naturalistic landscape. It’s also somewhat thorny, so plant it in a low-traffic area. It does put on a spectacular show. While pink is the most common color, you can also find plants with apricot, orange, red and white blooms. Winter Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima) As you can see from its botanical name, I do not grow this plant for its small, barely vis-

ible bloom. Rather, this plant has a special place in my landscape for its incredible honeysuckle fragrance. Small, creamy-white blooms appear in late January or early February. You will know when it is blooming as you can smell the fragrance from 100 feet away. It can get rather large--up to 10 feet-- so give it some room. Japanese Kerria (Kerria japonica) This wonderful yet underused shrub for shade is a showy, yellowflowered, early-blooming beauty with graceful arching branches. Its bright green and sometimes variegated foliage turns yellow in autumn, and its pistachio-green stems provide winter interest. Lady Banks Rose (Rosa banksiae) Unlike most roses, which bloom in late March and April, Lady Banks is a thornless, evergreen climbing rose that blooms very early. It has no serious insect/disease problems, is long lived and very drought tolerant. During flowering, 1-inch blooms cover the plant like a thick blanket that lasts up to 6 weeks. This is a great plant for an arbor or fence and can be seen all over Parker County. There are both yellow and white flowering varieties; the yellow variety has little scent but

the white is very fragrant. Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) Also called the Tulip Tree, this is a multi-stemmed, small tree with bright, attractive gray bark. Large, fuzzy, green flower buds are carried through the winter at tips of brittle branches. Blooms open in February, before the leaves, producing large, white flowers shaded in pink, creating a spectacular flower display. Texas Redbud (Cercis canadensis var texensis) This small tree has breathtaking blooms on bare wood. Texensis is a variety of the eastern redbud and is native to Texas and Oklahoma. It rarely gets above 25 feet and is very drought tolerant. Bridal Wreath Spiraea (Spiraea sp.) This large shrub has fine-textured, small leaves on long, graceful, arching branches. The pure white

flowers appear in dense, bouquet-like clusters all along the stems, giving the plant the appearance of a fountain when in full bloom. There are more than 80 types of spiraea from minatures that only get 3 feet tall to shrubs that can be greater than 10 feet. Choose wisely. While I do not grow these, other “harbingers” include forsythia, Mexican plum, and grape hyacinth. We do not recommend the popular Bradford pear because it has a tendency to split at its tight branch junctures and trees more than 15-20 years old often fall apart as main branches break off. As well, stay away from a flowering dogwood. While these do very well in northeast Texas, they are not well suited to our alkaline soil. Garden Questions? pcmgaquestions@gmail.com

Q&A Getting to know Thresea Tabor, Hoopla’s Gardener of the Month Thresea, when did you start gardening and why? I have a science background and have always enjoyed plants. Actually, my grandmother started me down the garden road. What advice would you give to new gardeners? My advice to a new gardener would be to take your time and plant what is adapted to where you live. What do you plan to change in your garden or gardening techniques this coming growing season?

This growing season has already started for me. I trimmed a rose bush yesterday and will move it to receive the proper amount of sun. What’s the best gardening advice you’ve received? The best advice I have received is take time to enjoy your garden. Besides gardening, what other hobbies do you pursue? I have several hobbies in addition to gardening: quilting, reading and watching grandchildren in sporting events.

Time for new year’s financial resolutions We’ve reached the end of another year – which means it’s just about time for some New Year’s resolutions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instrument or visit the gym more often? All these are worthy goals, of course, but why not also add some financial resolutions? Here are some ideas to think about: • Increase contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contribute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), for employees of public schools and some nonprofit groups, or a 457(b) plan, for employees of local governments. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while your earnings can grow tax deferred. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. • Try to “max out” on your IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2018, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and your earnings can grow tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but

earnings can grow tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59½ and you’ve have had your account at least five years. You can put virtually any investment in an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan. • Build an emergency fund. Try to build an emergency fund conaining three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund

can help you avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair. • Control your debts. It’s never easy, but do what you can to keep your debts under control. The less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future. • Don’t overreact to changes in the financial markets. We’ve had a long run of rising stock prices – but it won’t last forever. If we experience a sharp market downturn in 2018, don’t overreact by taking a “time out” from investing. Market drops are a normal feature of the investment landscape, and you may ultimately gain an advantage by buying new shares when their prices are down. • Review your goals and risk tol-

erance. At least once in 2018, take some time to review your short- and longterm financial goals and try to determine, possibly with the help of a financial professional, if your investment portfolio is still appropriate for these goals. At the same time, you’ll want to re-evaluate your risk tolerance to ensure you’re not taking too much risk – or possibly too little risk – with your investments. Do your best to stick with these resolutions throughout the coming year. At a minimum, they can help you improve your investment habits – and they may improve your financial picture far beyond 2018. Dowlings dodge arctic temps, explore SW Florida

NANCY DOWLING

Charles and Nancy Dowling recommend the Sandy Hook Fish and Rib House, where they say the crab was the best they’ve eaten. NANCY DOWLING

We are Charles and Nancy Dowling, and we are living our dream! Since we married in 1998, we’ve saved, planned and dreamed of hooking up to our RV and traveling the USA. That day has finally come, and we’re Roam sharing our experiences and advice with Hoopla readers. First Sweet Roam stop, January 2018, sunny Fort by Charles and Myers, Florida. Nancy Dowling We visited Pioneer Village RV Travel Correspondents Resort – nice park. Beautiful semi-heated pool. Lots of activities. Dances every Saturday night. Weather was the coldest they have had in 8 years, but it was still a balmy 60 to 80 degrees! Back home in Weatherford, the temps dipped down to 9 degrees, so we definitely thought we were fortunate to be in such beautiful weather. Pine Island is the largest Island in the state of Florida. It is a short drive from North Fort Myers and definitely worth the trip. Just as you cross a

draw bridge, you will enter several blocks of unique shops and restaurants. Prices are reasonable, and I bought a beautiful blouse there. It’s just fun to park and stroll the streets in front of the very colorful, beachy and eclectic shops. We ate at an adorable seafood restaurant named Sandy Hook Fish and Rib House. The décor is all nautical and done in good taste. That’s not the only thing that was in good taste -- the food was excellent! We had the baked tilapia, peel ‘n’ eat shrimp and a half pound of boiled crab legs. The shrimp was very good, and the crab was the best I’ve ever had! Next, we visited Fort Myers Beach, which is beautiful with its miles and miles of pure white sand. We strolled along, shuffling our feet in the gritty powder, until we came to a restaurant named The Salty Crab Bar and Grill. We grabbed a table out under an umbrella facing the ocean. It was very warm,

but the breeze made it a perfect day to have more shrimp, crab and beer. The shrimp was great and the crab was very good. Be prepared to pay for front row dining, which offers shade and a perfect view of the ocean. We are very frugal but thought it was worth every penny. We spotted a gift shop, where I could buy some postcards, then we stumbled upon a homemade ice cream stand -- it was absolutely the best! A final note about Fort Myers Beach: It is extremely congested. The bridge to the beach is only 3-5 miles, but it can take up to 30 minutes to get there because of the traffic. It’s a two-lane road with bumper-to-bumper traffic but moves with ease, except when there is an accident. Be prepared to be stuck a while. Better yet, park and eat and/or shop. Drivers are courteous and will let you in and out easily.

Colorful shops line the streets of Pine Island.
