A time in Texas The Goddess of Liberty, who graced the peak of the Texas Capitol for nearly a century, was installed in February of 1888. Made of iron and zinc, she weighs 2,000 pounds and stands 16 feet high. Her facial features are exaggerated so they can be seen from afar. After significant wear and tear was observed, the statue was moved to a climate-controlled corner of the Bullock Museum in 1985, where visitors can view the statue up close.

An aluminum replica was placed atop the capitol in 1986. Last year, a grant allowed conservationists to perform a comprehensive cleaning and perform minor repairs on the original Goddess of Liberty.

Green Stamps

We didn’t always have to wait for birthdays and Christmas to have our wishes fulfilled FRANKIE LEON

By Sandra Davis Hoopla Correspondent “If you wouldn’t feel quite right about spending $24.95 for an electric coffee percolator, don’t!

Get it with S&H Green Stamps!” sang the 1966 television commercial for the popular trading stamp, finishing with, “An American way of thrift since 1896.”

Which kitchen drawer housed the Green Stamps at your family’s home? For me, it was my grandmother’s top right drawer. After each trip to town, the stamps would be dropped in their special place. Then, when time had allowed for the collection to grow a bit, it was time to lick and stick those beauties in the S&H Green Stamps Quick Saver Book. Each page held 50 points worth of stamps – there were markings to denote if they were individual, 10-point stamps, or the rare 50-point stamps. The quick saver book had 24 pages – a total of 1,200 points per book. These small stamps were valuable – precision was required to ensure each stamp was properly entered into the books. They all had to be secure because they were easily lost if not attached, and the book could only be submitted when complete.

S&H Green Stamps were known for carrying name brand, high quality products: Sunbeam appliances, Timex Watches and Zippo lighters.

For 270 books, you could get a 17” color television in 1972 – but who had the ability to wait that long before cashing them in?

According to a report by ABC News, the span of Green Stamps redemption is estimated to have provided more than $10 billion dollars worth of products to stamp collectors.

The most common reasoning for the fall of the S&H Green Stamp program was reported to be the recession in the late 1970s. Many grocery and retail businesses could not afford to purchase the stamps to offer

their customers. Gas was limited to the point that it was purchased based on the license plate being an odd or even number and so scarce for one to be concerned with which service station gave Green Stamps.

The company, originally founded in Michigan by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson in 1896, has been sold several times now.

However, should you open the top right kitchen drawer and find a treasure load of Green Stamps, it’s not too late! Through the website Greenpoints.com, you can still redeem them. The stamps have lost a great deal of their value, as the book of 1,200 stamps today is worth only $1.20. The same rule applies, “No loose stamps can be redeemed.”

and shrubs. Recognize them by their large numbers, congregating habits and pear-shaped bodies. Most organic or inorganic general-purpose insecticides will control them.

n Ornamental Swiss Chard I’ve been a big fan of this beautiful plant all of my life. For most of that time, the variety ‘Rhubarb’ was all that we had, but we were grateful to have such a showy, leafy plant to use in the backs of our late-winter flower gardens. Then, about 20 years ago, the seed breeders introduced us to a spectacular blend they referred to as ‘Rainbow’ Swiss chard and our lovely plant shifted into a full range of colors.

The interesting thing is that these plants are also edible. They’re highly nutritious either cooked or in salads, but that’s only if you can bring yourself to harvest them and rob yourself of their beauty. If you do decide to harvest, choose the younger, less mature leaves and pick them one at a time. You may not be aware, but chard is very closely related to beets, so it’s even more ironic that we’d ever consider it as an ornamental plant for our landscapes.

seed, but you can also plant transplants from local nurseries. Cluster it in beds, but include it, too, as the “thriller” tall plants in your large patio pots.

You can’t do it with the existing top growth. Even 50 years later you’ll still be able to see the crooks in their trunks. Topping is that damaging to their normal habit of growth.

The quick way to restore them is to cut all of their trunks back

completely to the ground. They will send out 15 or 20 new shoots per plant, and all you’ll have to do is select the 3 to 5 stems you want to become the new trunks and let them develop.

It’s a good idea to let 8 or 10 trunks grow for the first year.

They’re quite brittle, and some are likely to break off. But by the end of the second year you’ll never know they’ve ever been topped. I’ve seen this done, and it really does work.

Register now for the March for Meals 5K Walk Benefits local Meals on Wheels program Parker County Committee on Aging, Inc., has announced that it will be participating in the 17th annual March for Meals – a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meals on Wheels and our senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain healthy and independent.

PCCOA’s celebration will include its 3rd Annual March for Meals 5K Walk and Community Event on Saturday, March 23, at the Weatherford Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The services we provide through Meals on Wheels are so important to our seniors in Parker County,” said Shelly Mowery, Executive Di-

rector of Parker County Committee on Aging, Inc. “The March for Meals event is a great way to raise funds and awareness to help our seniors most in need.”

Couple was led to bring healthier food, meal plans to area

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Faith and food. Jade and Hoot Barbee believe both are essential to life. But not just any food.

They are strong believers that what we put in our bodies should be healthy and go toward helping people live a longer life.

The restaurant's slogan is "Giving Parker County a healthy fast food eatery." The menu features a plethora of healthy options, including homemade granola, fresh vegetables and fruit, and plenty of vegan and organic selections.

“The focus was awareness. The food was a bonus,” Jade said. “Our original idea was to come over here and do breakfast and lunch and run back over to work. But then people started stopping by and calling, texting, emailing, and we realized this was going to be more than we originally thought.”

So they took a two-week vacation, sold their ATV and Marine dealership, and dove full-time

into their new restaurant. It was indeed a leap of faith, but that's what it was intended to be all along, Jade said.

“We put up a for sale sign and sold our other company in three days. We knew this was what the Lord wanted,” she said.

What makes the restaurant even more unique is that it operates as a non-profit business, a rarity in the food industry.

“The living just comes by what you do. Non-profit is something the Lord told me to do,” Jade said.

“It's not about money. Sure, we have to pay bills and live, but the reason we did this was to bring something healthy to more people.

“Now, I truly have to break down what my cost is for everything. I have to get exact numbers.”

Jade is looking into funding options, including possible agricultural and community awareness grants. In the meantime, they are doing fine with customers and folks who offer contributions.

he wants me to give you $200 to buy some new shoes.’”

Jade said another customer provided them with a new roof, one of many things that was needed when they moved into the old Alvin Ord’s Sandwich Shop on South Main St. Hoot does a lot of the cooking at the restaurant. It's a skill he discovered when his wife was unable to cook for the family several years ago.

“The day we discovered his gift, he looked in the pantry and saw nothing and said, ‘What am I suppose to do?’

He had never made anything.”

Jade said that every time Hoot got in the kitchen, it was if something magical would happen. He would always create an unforgetable dinner.

“I really thought nothing of it and didn’t truly realize his gift until the Lord began to birth the restaurant,” she said. “He came to a whole new level of greatness through food.

rest is all Jesus.”

Jade said the idea to open Wholesome To Go became a reality when she realized she and her family couldn't order out like some families who aren’t as concerned about eating fresh organic foods.

"Being business owners with five kids, we just wanted to get dinner somewhere, and we couldn't," she said. "We have found out there are others like us. It's very fulfilling. They tell us all the time 'We're so thankful you're here.'"

Jade and Hoot are also thankful for the customers. In fact, they offer several specials, such as a Hoopla Special for seniors that includes a half sandwich, smoothie or water, and a bag of chips (all gluten and grain-free).

One of their most popular items is the Full Plate Special. It features meal plans that include breakfast and lunch starting at $65 per week.

“This is not the same concept as meal prepping or prepared meals, dinners to go. If you do a little research and test out some of those places, you’ll find quite unhealthy options that are loaded

with carbs, which are about the only food that sustains freezing or being stored cold and re-heated.

“We are a fresh concept, so meals are picked up daily. We actually have a very large senior client base and love having them in.”

Jade, a nutritionist, will sit down with people to design a menu that's right for them. Customized menus start at $50.

“This is something that can be used at home as well and doesn't have to be used at all in store,” she said.

And if customers have any food ideas, Jade and Hoot are listening.

“Full Plate was created by customers, so yes, we welcome any ideas,” Jade said.

And yes, a meal at Wholesome to Go might cost a little bit more, but Hoot said that's a small price to pay in exchange for a better life.

“We're expensive compared to a $1.59 chili burger,” he said. “But people are coming in for more than just a sandwich. They're coming in asking for help, and we really feel good about what we're offering people.”

Main's lifelong love of sewing began in junior high

by Pam Luke Quilter's Guild of Parker County Like many members of The Parker County Quilter's Guild, Lynn Main's life was forever changed when she learned how to make her own clothes in a junior high home economics class.

A few years later, that training provided her an opportunity to make spending money by hemming pants and skirts for students while she studied for a career in education at Texas Christian University.

Lynn began quilting in the 1970s, though she primarily did garment sewing. She recalls the uptick of quilting in the 1970s with the bicentennial celebration.

“You had to cut everything out with scissors and use cardboard templates to trace shapes. I learned to hand quilt. Things really changed with the rotary cutter and machine quilting. Eleanor Burns and her “Quilt in a Day” books showed me how to cut and sew quickly. My first quilt was a log cabin wall hanging in shades of blue and brown. It was machine sewn but hand quilted.”

One of Lynn’s passions is making scrap quilts. Her favorite pattern

is the intricately-pieced pineapple quilt. She has made at least 15 of them. She is challenged by the scraps she collects from other quilters. This includes scraps and fabric she picks up on the Guild’s “give away” table. Careful placement of lights and darks produce some of the most beautiful quilts. Lynn is currently making children’s quilts using sports-themed fabrics donated by a guild member. She is also working her way through the large collection of fabrics she inherited from her mother-in-law who began quilting around the same time as Lynn.

As many quilters do, Lynn says she spends way too much time looking at internet websites related to quilting. She has found several that provide great sources for inspiration, including one site with over 150 free scrap quilt patterns. She also finds ideas on different quilting-related social media pages as well as from the shows she attends each year. She enjoys seeing what other quilters are making.

Most quilters find enjoyment and friendship by quilting in a bee. Lynn meets with her bee twice a month.

While Lynn primarily makes quilts with scraps, she also enjoys shopping for fabric. She doesn’t have a favorite color but enjoys making baby quilts, so she’s drawn to bright colors that kids like. She admits, “I’ll use just about every kind of fabric in a scrap quilt. Most

of the time, the pieces are so small that you just see a pop of color, not the kind of fabric you use.”

Lynn is proud of her two children, one son who is a high school social studies teacher in Germantown, Maryland and her daughter, a marketing rep, who lives in Dallas.

Her simply perfect granddaughter is the reason she came back to Texas after retiring as an elementary school principal in Washington, D.C.

keeping only the best, most active. n Research indicates that people sleep better if they have their feet washed before bedtime. n When you lose a brain cell, your brain make a new one. n Balance in normal aging begins to be affected after the age of 35. Slowly, over the years and decades, we lose the ability to stand on one foot, turn and step, jump or move due to pain, medical challenges and conditions caused by the lack of exercise. Practicing balance as we age is a great way to avoid falls.
