“My favorite Christmas memory was just a couple years ago. My parents were downsizing and were selling their house, and we had our final Christmas in the house my dad built. All my siblings, children and grandchildren were all together and that was wonderful!”

“When my sister and I were about 6 and 8 years old, Santa brought us a saddle and bridle. We were thrilled and played with them on the hearth for a bit. We never did see the horse tied in the backyard until our parents guided us to the window and said, ‘Look outside!’”

“It was held in my daughter’s barn that she had decorated. We opened presents one at a time and had a beautiful Christmas.

Just having it in the barn was kind of like being in the setting where Jesus was born. Will never forget the love and happiness that was present that day!”

Events Saturday, Dec. 16 Ugly Christmas Party

Holland Equestrian Farm hosts its second annual Ugly Christmas Party, 6 p.m., 1015 Azle Highway. Wear your ugliest Christmas outfit (there will be a contest with prizes), bring an appetizer, dessert or drinks. Christmas exchange ($20 limit).

Cowboy Santa Visits Peacock’s Round up the grandkids and head to Peacock’s Feed and Supply to see Cowboy Santa.

Photos are $15 and benefit Kowboy Krewe Foundation. Enjoy refreshments and ride the train, 122 W. Water St., 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chili Luncheon and Open House The Central Community Volunteer Fire Department at 4100 Old Agnes Road will host an open house with free chili, a live band, gun raffle and silent auction, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 21 Quilt Guild Meeting Members of the Quilt Guild of Parker County will enjoy a salad supper and make presentations of charitable donations to Meals on Wheels, CASA and Grace House Ministries, 6 p.m., North Side Baptist Church in the Youth Center, 910 N Main St.

Area churches fill shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child

“You must have a lot of grandchildren,” said the cashier as she rang up dozens of toys, school supplies and clothing items.

“I do,” said Shirley Riebe, “but these are gifts for the shoeboxes I am packing for Operation Christmas Child.”

Tears filled the cashier’s eyes, as she recalled two times when, as a child in the Philippines, she had been the recipient of a Christmas shoebox.

“They changed my life,” she told Shirley, “and now I live in the United States.”

The OCC is an off-shoot of Samaritan’s Purse, a non-denominational organization run by Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham, which delivers the boxes to children around the world who have no expectation of receiving a gift at Christmas or any other time. One hundred and twenty-five boxes were collected that first year.

The Riebes and the Westenhovers led the project for 11 years, but after Florene’s death, Glenn and the Riebes handed over the reins of a growing ministry to others.

Today, Sandra Moss coordinates the program that has grown enormously over the last 20 years. She has worked with Operation Christmas Child for about eight years. This year, the church collected a record 3,029 boxes from North Side and processed a grand total of 11,125 from the community as a whole. Founded in 1993, Operation Christmas Child delivers shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene articles, sports equipment and a book about Jesus Christ in their own language to children who live in areas that have suffered war, famine, or natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods. Sandra and the Riebes are three members of North Side Baptist Church who not only pack individual boxes each year, but help organize the local collection center out of the church facilities.

After the deadline to return boxes, they are packed into large trailer trucks that will take the Weatherford area donations to a processing and collection center in the Metroplex from where the boxes will continue their journey. Weatherford is one of 4,700 collection centers working with Operation Christmas Child.

Each year the number of shoeboxes grows. But North Side is not the only donor in this endeavor.

Other churches and organizations in the area send their shoeboxes to the collection center at North Side. This year, Couts Methodist Church, First Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, Hobby Lobby, some private schools, and The Rock gymnastic center sent boxes to North Side. There are also collection centers around the world in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Austria, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Japan and New Zealand.

The fully loaded trailer trucks left Weatherford on Nov. 20. Traditionally, they are sent on their way surrounded by the prayer of those who packed them.

they complete each year, but they estimate around 50. Sandra constantly looks for bargains, and this year she found a really good price on soccer balls.

Deflated and wrapped tightly, they were included in the shoeboxes along with a pump to re-inflate them.

Several Sunday School classes organized pot luck suppers in conjunction with the program. After the meal, they gather around tables holding items for girls or boys gifts and help pack shoeboxes together.

Shirley Riebe and her family have had many rewarding experiences while preparing the boxes.

Shirley related the story of a little girl who longed for an umbrella. Her brother, however, hoped he would receive school supplies. When the shoeboxes were handed out, each wish was fulfilled, (even though children do not submit their wants or needs to the OCC program or to those who pack the boxes.)

Similar stories are repeated each year. Many lives are touched by a filled shoebox, especially those lives that originally pack the little cartons. Shirley Riebe says, “Working for Operation Christmas Child has been the most memorable time of my life.”

Since the boxes are sent to devastated areas of the world, it is a good guess that areas in the Caribbean hit by recent hurricanes may receive some of the gifts this year.

Hoopla’s Gardener of the Month LaDonna Stockstill discusses her passion for gardening LaDonna, when did you start gardening and why?

I started gardening at a very young age (about 6) when my family purchased land to plant peach and pecan orchards.

My grandfather John K. Johnson and Tom Denmen of the Stephenville Experimental Station started developing a peach orchard on my grandfather’s land in Parker County.

They developed many of the methods used today, though they worked in the 1920s and 1930s. Scratch my family and we would bleed peach juice.

Fruit and nut trees take several years before they produce enough to make a living for a family so we truck farmed to help make ends meet. We also grew corn, and I was the tractor driver during harvest time. I was younger than 10 and often my brother or dad would have to hit me in the back of the head with corn to remind me to go or to stop.

What advice would you give to new gardeners?

Do not try to grow everything you see in someone else’s yard. Establish a long term plan and work with that plan.

First, plant the trees you want, then shrubs, perennials, etc. We have lived in our home over 50 years, and our garden changes all the time.

Gardening is like a runway show -each year there are changes.

What is the best gardening advice you’ve received?

My dad, J.K. Johnson, Jr., said I needed to work on our soil and enrich it because I have caliche soil that is difficult to work with.

Besides gardening, what other hobbies do you pursue?

Gardening is my therapy and pleasure. Besides gardening, I take pleasure in the time I can spend with my family.

n LaDonna Stockstill’s Achievements • In 2000, LaDonna became a charter member of the Parker County Master Gardeners. Members volunteer throughout the county to beautify the area and teach residents how to effectively garden in the challenging soil and weather of Parker County. She’s held several positions within the club.

• In 2001, she was awarded a certificate of appreciation for her service as a Master Gardener by County Extension Agent-AG Jon Green.

• LaDonna was selected as Master Gardener of the Year in 2004 and Co-Master Gardener of the Year in 2012.

• She was also named Master Gardener of the Decade.

• She has served as coordinator to Chandor Gardens for the City of Weatherford with the Master Gardeners.

Special birthday delivery for quilting guild president Marsha Corlley of Weatherford celebrates her 65th birthday on Jan. 6, but she got an early birthday gift in late November when her third grandchild was born.

Little Avalynn Marie Kunter, who was born Nov. 28, weighed 5 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 17 inches long. She was welcomed into the family by Marsha’s 21-month-old grandson Wyatt and 4-year-old grandson Charlie.

“The greatest thing about being a grandparent is having the time to pour love into their hearts,” said Marsha.

ife...it keeps getting better Little did I realize, when I retired from my third career, that I would embark on yet another. I thought I was retired.

My son, Tom, and his wife, Susan, opened a shop in Matagorda. They came to me about doing custom embroidery on the merchandise they would sell in their shop.

I have done embroidery since I was a young girl. I love the way it looks and how it enhances an object, so I

said yes and quickly came out of retirement to begin my fourth career.

For doing large-scale projects, I purchased an embroidery machine, and the project became a family affair.

About a year ago, at one of the meetings of the Daughters of the American

Revolution, we were trying to come up with an idea for a quilt the state society could give to the state regent.

I volunteered to embroider our quilt square.

Parker County has one of the prettiest courthouses in Texas, so I decided it should feature the courthouse.

My DAR sisters approved, so I had to figure out how I was going to do that.

I asked my son if he could digitize the courthouse so I could create the courthouse for a quilt square.

After lots of refining, I had the image I wanted. Since then, I have done several images of the courthouse for different projects.

I am so glad I started this project a year ago since the courthouse is getting a face lift and is surrounded by scaffolding now. We are preserving this part of history.

Christmas on the Square Thousands of area residents turned out for Weatherford’s annual Christmas on the Square. Warm weather and plenty of family fun brought grandparents and their grandchildren to the downtown area on Saturday, Dec. 2, including Tracy Childers (above) and her grandchildren Brylee Hudgins (center) and Erinn Smith.

The Christian Motorcyclists Association’s Snowball Toss (pictured at right) was a popular booth. Local chapter president Dan Jones (far right) and road captain Ray Latham were on hand to hand out prizes.

Bread 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 ¼ cups sugar 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 1 ½ teaspoons poppy seeds 1 ½ teaspoons butter flavored extract 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract 1 ½ teaspoons almond extract 1 ⅛ cups vegetable oil 1 ½ cups milk 3 eggs Glaze ¾ cup sugar ¼ cup orange juice ½ teaspoon butter flavored extract ½ teaspoon almond extract ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix the bread ingredients together and pour into two greased loaf pans.

Bake approximately an hour (use toothpick to check it).

In a small bowl, combine ingredients for the glaze and pour over the baked loaves after they’ve cooled.

The Watters celebrate 45 years of marriage

Sherry O. and Dennis J. Watters III of Weatherford celebrate 45 years of marriage this month.

The couple married at Westridge Baptist Church in Fort Worth on Dec. 15, 1972.

Sherry O. is a designer and owner of Something Special Boutique. Dennis J. is a self-employed insurance agent.

They have two children, Michelle L. Word of Euless and John D. Watters of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The couple will celebrate their anniversary with friends from their Bible class and also spend time with their daughter and 11-year-old granddaughter, Taylor Paige Word.
