Traveling can be exhausting for anyone, but this month’s Guess Who has had it worse than most.

He was once forced to sleep in an airport for days on end. That was after getting stuck on an island without PUBLIC DOMAIN modern-day conveniences. There’s been no shortage of drama for this guy — he even fought off pirates while sailing in the Mediterranean. Fortunately, not all of his travels have been disastrous. There were few things he enjoyed more than captaining a shrimp boat in the bayous of Alabama.

Area music legends happy, healthy but still singin’ the blues

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Ask any Cajun and they’ll tell you how delicious gator is.

And when it’s Gary “Gator” Millhollon teaming up with his great friend Ray “Ray Boy” Reed playing the blues, the tunes can get pretty tasty.

Gator, who now lives in Granbury at age 70, and 81-year-old Fort Worth resident Ray have been playing together for almost seven years. However, their love of the blues dates back to when they were single digits in age.

“I was 5 years old when I saw Roy Orbison playing in the parking lot of a furniture store in Odes-

sa, Texas (1954),” Gator recalled. “He was still just a local boy. Electric guitars and drums. I said, ‘I gotta do this.’”

Ray was 9 when he realized he wanted to be a professional musician and the blues bug bit him.

“My family all played music, and I was listening and learning,” he said. “When I was 15, I had picked cotton all week, made $15, bought a guitar and came to Fort Worth from Maypearl, Texas. I was working washing dishes and at a car wash. I was trying to play and get paid. I got a few gigs and then a few more.

“My sister was called Lady Pearl, and she was a great singer and performer. She decided to let me in her band, and I started playing all over with

the Lady Pearl Band – Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Corpus Christi, Waco. I played with Freddie King, Eddy Feltz, ZZ Hill, Tyrone Davis, Joe Simon and more I can’t remember.”

It was in the Metroplex, in fact, where Gator and Ray met and decided to join forces.

“I spent 20 years in Austin playing. Then I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I founded the Blue Rhythm Kings and we played the casino circuit,” Gator said. “After 22 years, I moved back to Texas and chose the DFW area. I went to a jam one night and met Ray there. We played together and it really clicked.”

their careers, it’s no wonder their combined sound produces magic. The list of legendary musicians with whom they’ve shared the stage would fill a hall of fame. They’ve also produced some stories that make a person stop still in their tracks and listen.

“It’s hard to pick, Chuck Berry, the legendary Muddy Waters Band with Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton and Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith were mindblowing for me. But Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter and several others were amazing as well,” Gator said. “Of course, Keb Mo just was incredible when we both played at a couple of blues festivals. Jimmie Vaughan is not only a Texan like me, he’s a fantastic and ‘true’ blues artist. He is also the most humble guy you’d ever meet.

“One of the most emotional nights was playing with Louisiana Red, who was such a fantastic Delta style player and who was the happiest person I’d ever met. Here’s a guy whose mother died at his childbirth, who’s father was lynched by the Klan when he was 11, and who lived on the streets until he got to Chicago and Muddy Waters took him in. Although he was only marginally popular in the states, the Europeans consider him one of the greatest of all time. He spent his last 20 years living in Germany, but came back occasionally to do small tours. I’ve never seen a person so at peace with the world and with himself – a very spiritual and kind person but one who had a great sense of humor.”

Ray reflected one particular special experience when he was playing bass for Freddie King.

“We played some gigs in Fort Worth and he decided to stay at my house instead of the hotel. So we’d stay up most of the night with him drinking and we were talking about everything,” Ray said.

“He was one of the greatest ever – taught me a lot.”

Gator added that he remembered a quote from Eric Clapton saying as he looked back on his career, the one guy who taught him all he needed to know was King.

And speaking of Gator, how he came about his nickname is in itself an interesting story he likes to share.

“Back in my Austin days, one of my good friends was a Cajun who grew up in the bayou and had moved to Austin. One night we were intoxicated and visiting the bayous in Louisiana, and he said he’d show me how to catch an alligator,” Gator said. “It was scary, but the alcohol helped, and we did catch a 4- or 5-footer but released it when we realized we wouldn’t know what to do with it.

When my other friends found out, one started calling me Gator and the name stuck.”

Among their many anecdotes from days on the road, Gator recalled a time when Louisiana Red played a joke on him onstage.

“He was known for playing in many styles, sometimes including strange tunings on his guitar. On this night, I was playing my Les Paul and he was playing an old green Kay guitar,” Gator said. “He turned to me and said, ‘Let’s trade guitars on this next song. I’d sure like to play that black Les Paul.’

He was sitting, so I took his guitar, set it down and

handed him my LP. He immediately started playing a song and singing the first verse.

“I walked back over and put on his old Kay guitar. He immediately turned and said, ‘Take it, Gator,’ indicating I should play a solo. Well, I could see he was in A, so I slid down to the fifth fret and started playing a solo, but what came out was horrible and I suddenly realized his Kay was tuned to something like open G minor. I looked over at him and he was slapping his knee and laughing while I struggled to finish the solo.”

Ray has been named a Fort Worth Living Legend. In his typical laid-back style, Ray downplayed the honor.

“I feel it should have been some I played with that helped me learn to play the blues instead of me, but I appreciated it a lot,” was his short response to the honor.

Their musical journey has introduced them to quite a few Hollywood stars whom they’ve entertained. Of course, along with that come more cool stories.

“Jeremy Irons was very polite and supportive of our music. He was much smaller and shorter than I would have thought, but very kind and hospitable. He was having a good time and trying not to attract attention to himself,” Gator said. “One movie, which included Christopher Walken, ended up never being released and it was to have had our song in the bar scene.

“The best I could do was to get him to say, ‘Gator has a good band but they need more cowbell.’ That was enough for me to be able to quote him.”

Gator and Ray have quite a collection of recordings, many are on YouTube under Gary Millhollon, and there are also some under his YouTube pseudonym Gatorblue.

“We keep threatening to release a CD, but today it seems that downloads are where most people get their blues, so we’re rolling with that at this time,” Gator said with a grin.

They also keep a full schedule. But then, blues musicians are known for playing well into their lives. As for how long they’ll continue, neither is saying, only that they’re still having fun.

“As long as we have our health, I think we will both perform. We really augment each other well, and sharing the load on vocals and guitar solos means it’s a bit less demanding than for bands where you’re doing it all,” Gator said.

“The legendary Charlie Mussle-

white said it best, ‘The reason that all of us in the blues are like a family is that we play for the music that we love, not the music that might make us more money.’ I can walk into a blues club in London, Dublin, Clarksdale (in) Mississippi, Phoenix, anywhere, I can sit down and say ‘let’s do a medium shuffle in G with a 1-5-4’ and everyone just takes off and plays the song. Blues people have their own language and understanding of what’s happening.”

Ray added, “I think I’ll cut it loose in a few years for more time with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but I enjoy it still. I have a lot of enjoyment with Gator and many of the other musicians I play with like Killer Bug, Larry Lampkin and others.”

Then he said with a smile, “When you perform, you gotta give the people what they want, not what you want.”

Fort Worth’s native son Bob Schieffer discusses pastimes and presidents

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent Fort Worth native Bob Schieffer remembers meeting his boyhood hero, legendary newscaster Walter Cronkite, for the first time.

“When I got hired by CBS, I felt like a Little Leaguer who’d been given his chance to play in the majors,” Bob recalled. “Walter turned out to be exactly how I thought and hoped he was, curious, funny, down to earth. He never thought he was smarter than anyone else, but he worked harder than anyone else. He was never partisan. He just wanted the story.

“There was nothing phony about Walter – and he just loved being Walter Cronkite.”

Bob paid close attention to his hero, learning all he could. And, much like the young baseball player who watched historical figures such as Mickey Mantle, Nolan Ryan or a number of others, when the opportunity presented itself, Bob became a legend himself.

A humble legend at that.

“I leave it to others to judge my work. I’ve had a great life and I loved what I did,” he said.

Bob, now 84 and retired – sort of – still has an office in CBS headquarters in Washington. He still writes, and when Hoopla caught up with Bob he was, in fact, working on a story on another legend, country music great Tanya Tucker.

“I’m a big fan of country music,” Bob said.

Not only is he a fan of country music, he performs it. Since leaving the anchor desk at CBS Evening News in 2006, he has collaborated as a songwriter with musicians in New York and Washington, D.C. He has four songs with the Washington area band, Honky Tonk Confidential, all of which appear on their CD, “Road Kill Stew and Other News (with Special Guest Bob Schieffer)”. He sang “TV Anchorman” and wrote the lyrics for the other songs.

– Bob Schieffer In all, before retiring from CBS’ “Face the Nation” in 2015, Bob spent 52 years in the news industry, 46 with CBS. His first “big break” came on the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and he drove Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother to the Dallas Police Station. From there, he sent reports back to the Star-Telegram offices, helping the paper put out four extra editions that day.

But that is not his most memorable assignment while working at the StarTelegram, Bob said. It was the time he persuaded the paper’s powers that be to send him to Vietnam in search of young men serving from the Metroplex.

“I found a young man, he was in full battle gear. I said to him, ‘I’m Bob Schieffer. Your mom asked me to find you,’” Bob said, still obviously emotional in retelling the story. “He broke down crying. I thought it made his day a

little better, and it impacted me a lot.”

Bob, one of TCU’s most notable graduates, has made a lifetime of impacting folks. As one of a few journalists to cover all four of the major Washington national assignments, the White House, the Pentagon, United States Department of State, and United States Congress, there isn’t much that hasn’t crossed his path.

His list of accolades is longer than a city block. It includes eight Emmys, the overseas Press Club Award, the Paul White Award presented by the TV News Directors Association, and the Edward R. Murrow Award given by Murrow’s alma mater, Washington State University.

He was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2002, and inducted into the National Academy of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame in 2013. He was named a living legend by the Library of Congress in 2008.

Along with his work in the news field, Bob has received high praise for his moderation of three presidential debates, George W. Bush-John Kerry in 2004, Barack Obama-John McCain in 2008, and Obama-Mitt Romney in 2012.

It’s also something he both enjoyed very much and takes great pride in.

“I thought Obama was the best debater of them all,” Bob said. “The debate between Bush and Kerry was interesting. I said, ‘We all share something.

We’re all married to strong women and have two daughters.’

“Kerry said, ‘We all married above ourselves, especially me.’ Bush said, ‘I learned to keep quiet,’” Bob added with a laugh.

Bob was personal friends with the late McCain, and like many he considers him to have been a hero on many levels. But, he said, “That didn’t mean I cut him any slack.”

“John always jumped around and was fidgety, like he was overcaffeinated,” Bob said. “While Obama was speaking, McCain was taking notes. But while McCain was speaking, I noticed Obama was drawing a straight line. It was his way of concentrating.”

And though Bob didn’t make his way to CBS until 1969, as Lyndon Johnson was leaving the presidency, Bob credits the late Texas great with being “the best politician I ever knew about.”

“He and William Shakespeare knew more about people than anyone who walked the earth,” Bob said.

But LBJ was not his favorite president. That might come as a surprise to many.

“My favorite president was Gerald Ford. He was comfortable as a president,” Bob said. “He was happy to take questions, treated you with respect, he was fun to be around.

“He liked having fun, just shooting the breeze.”

Life is a lot less hectic for Bob these days, most of which he spends painting, another of his passions from an early age. His works are mostly landscapes and scenery, though he has been working on a self-portrait lately.

“I got it from my grandmother, when I was 4 years old. We’d sit on the front porch and draw the cows. I never really stopped,” he said. “I love it, but I’m just trying to get better, and now I have a little more time to work on that.

“Every story I’ve ever done, I think, ‘If I’d just asked one more question...’ I’ve never written one with which I’m totally satisfied. I’ve written a lot I’m proud of. It’s the same way with my art.”

He also sometimes finds his way back to Fort Worth, such as when he made one final trip to Globe Life Park, a.k.a. The Ballpark in Arlington, to see the Texas Rangers before they moved to their new home across the street. His younger brother, Tom Schieffer, helped bring The Ballpark to Arlington while he was co-owner with George W. Bush before Bush became Texas governor and later president.

Bush was also there as part of the occasion, the final game at Globe Life.

“It was very emotional. The president was funny, like he always is, always having fun,” Bob said.

“He’s really enjoying life as a former president.”

And though he acknowledges being one of the all-time greats, Bob will always look back on the youngster at Fort Worth’s J.P. Elder Junior High who started because he thought it was cool to see his byline in the school paper.

“I said that’s pretty neat, I want to keep doing that. I always wanted to be a reporter when I was young, and I grew up to be one,” Bob said.

“If I had a special talent, it was being in the right place at the right time.”

But what about a vacuum cleaner bash? I’m not usually at a loss for words, but I’d be stuck for snappy conversation while guests clustered around the artichoke dip. I took a speech class in college and once spoke off-the-cuff for 15 minutes on the topic “Life Before Rubber Bands.”

Nevertheless, the prospect of chatting with 20 people who share similar cleaning devices was daunting.

“So, Dick, I understand you and your wife have a new Oreck. Enlighten the group with some of your favorite moments.”

“It’s hard to pick our favorites.

The night the bag of Fritos fell on the rug was unforgettable. We loved it last week when the cat shredded the down pillow. But Mary Ellen has a special place in her heart for Christmas Eve when the tree toppled over and pine needles were all over the living room floor.”

I think Mary Ellen and I will take a pass on hosting an Oreck party. We don’t want to sit around while our friends share their dirty little secrets.

And we still have feelings for our first vacuum cleaner. It was tough saying goodbye to Kirby after 25 years. He was the product of a bygone era. Until the day Kirby died, he pretty much remained in the closet.

It’s Hip To Be Square (Dancing) Springtown couple dances for fun and fitness

by John English Hoopla Correspondent Jimmy Dean and Carmen Jeannette Bishop had not even met when what would become a mutual passion for the social dance form of square dancing was first spawned.

Jimmy, or J.D., 58, said he would tag along when his parents went square dancing as a young boy, and Carmen, or C.J., 45, “fell in love with it,” as a freshman in high school.

Last year, in the midst of the COVID- 19 pandemic, the Springtown couple decided to begin square dancing classes when C.J. said the couple’s youngest daughter “showed an interest as a way to exercise without ‘exercising.’”

And they have been dancing ever since.

“My husband, 17-year-old daughter and I were the only students for that class,” C.J. said. “We danced every Monday night at the First Baptist Church. In mid-March, when everything got shut down because of COVID, we had already gone through all of the steps that we needed to learn in order to graduate. We were only two to three weeks away from graduation, but were not able to have an actual graduation dance. The Pioneers (Square Dance Club) chose to pay for our badges as a graduation gift since we were unable to have our dance.”

C.J. said square dancing provided an opportunity for her and her husband to get away.

“So much of our time was spent trying to make ends meet and running errands or going to doctors’ appointments,” C.J. said. “When we are dancing, we do not have time to think about all that stuff. It is like a twohour vacation from stress.”

J.D. said it has also been good for the marriage.

“It does give us time to spend together as a family and have fun,” J.D. said. “I honestly believe that couples that square dance together will stay together.”

J.D. said that a number of things appeal to him about square dancing, but one of the main reasons he and his wife enjoy it so much is that it is wholesome.

“It is good, clean, family-friendly, fun,” J.D. said. “You get to dance with a lot of people and still get to go home with the girl that brought you.”

The draw for C.J. is the social nature of square dancing along with the variety.

“The concentration it takes releases a lot of stress, and it is time I can spend with my family and new friends,” C.J. said. “No two dances are ever the same. It is like a BBQ set to music with good friends, good music, and good food.”

The Bishops met in the military in 1997 where both were medics.

C.J. worked for the Oregon Military Academy as in instructor and J.D. worked as medical support for the Academy’s summer schools.

“He was a clean cut, blonde haired, blue-eyed Texas cowboy, who despite having lived in Oregon for several years at the time, had not lost his accent,” C.J. said J.D. also felt an instantaneous attraction for his wife and said one of the biggest factors was in C.J.’s attitude.

“She was not afraid to get her hands dirty and worked as hard as all the guys there,” J.D. said. “She was a smart aleck and could give as good as she could get.”

The Bishops enjoy traveling, horseback riding, working outside together and serving their church.

The couple also has a goal of dancing in every state.

The Bishops dance on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Swingtime Center at 5100 SE Loop 820 in Fort Worth.

The Pioneers will resume classes at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, at the First Baptist Church located at 222 Church Street in Weatherford.

French Toast Casserole French toast makes for a delicious treat any time of day. And an 8”x8” pan makes just the right amount for empty nesters.

5 cups bread cubes 4 eggs 1 ½ cups milk ¼ cup white sugar, divided ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon margarine, softened 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8”x8” inch casserole dish.

Line bottom of pan with cubed bread.

Beat eggs, milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, salt and vanilla in a large bowl and pour egg mixture over bread.

Distribute evenly-sliced margarine over top; let stand for 10 minutes.

Combine rest of sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle on top.

Bake in preheated oven approximately 45 to 50 minutes, until golden.

He’s Singing Wherever He Goes Weatherford resident is a singer, songwriter and an instrument of God

by Rick Mauch Hoopla Correspondent In a world full of turmoil, it’s nice to know there are folks like Kerry Patton out there to provide some sweet harmony. Literally and metaphorically.

Kerry, a local pastor with an expertise in music and a heart bigger than the loudest note in the most rhythmic song, might even be called an angel.

And he does believe in angels. In fact, he believes he might have met one himself while sharing his generosity.

“Over 25 years ago, I was in my office at Calvary Methodist Church and the phone rang. The man on the other end introduced himself as Wesley and told me that he was at a local motel and was hungry, needing food. He had taken the bus up from Houston the day before, and was returning from his mother’s funeral and burial. She had died tragically in a fire.

“I checked my wallet. I had enough money to buy Wesley dinner. So, I drove to where he was and picked him up, taking him to a local pizza establishment, where I bought him a large pizza, thinking that he might be able to eat again tomorrow. Well, Wesley ate the entire large pizza in one sitting, thanked me, and asked to be returned to his motel room. Arriving there, he shook my hand, thanked me sincerely, and said goodbye.”

Kerry didn’t imagine ever hearing from him again – until almost exactly one year later.

“My phone rang again, and I was

very surprised to hear a voice, vaguely familiar on the other end of the line.

‘Um, hello…pastor. Hi. My name is Wesley. And um… I am staying at the (same motel as a year before) and I’ve just returned from Houston where I’ve had to bury my mother this last week.

She died when her house caught fire,” Kerry remembered.

“I remember shaking my head in disbelief. ‘Uh, Wesley…did you say?

Um…have we met before? By which I mean, didn’t we have this exact conversation 12 months ago? Remember, I took you out for pizza…and dropped you off there at the motel? Remember me? I drive a brown Voyager van?’

Wesley seemed shocked. ‘No sir. I don’t know what you are talking about. My mother just died last week.”

“So, I asked THIS Wesley what he needed, and he replied that he was hungry and could I pick him up and take him to dinner. So I did. I was not surprised to find the same man I had entertained only a year before – at the same motel he’d been at before. So, I took him to the same pizza place as I had before and bought him the same large pizza as before, and just like before, Wesley ate the entire pizza in a single sitting.

“I sat and chuckled to myself as I witnessed reliving the same event a second year in a row. After I dropped Wesley off, I naively did not imagine that I would see him again in 12 months.”

But he did. In fact, for four years in a row, Kerry had the exact conversation with Wesley as he’d had in the

In the fourth year, Kerry even interrupted him and asked him if he was just up from Houston. Wesley seemed amazed, “How did you know that? Why, yes. I just returned from burying my mother. She died in a fire last week!”

“Year Five rolled around and no call.

I waited all that month hoping that my angel friend from Houston might drop in once more, but he didn’t,” Kerry said. “I’ve wondered what ever became of Wesley. Did he pass away?

Did he find home in an institution somewhere? Or did the winds of time simply carry him to a different path?

Whatever it was, I was blessed by getting to be a part of his life for those brief moments across four years.”

Instead of seeing Wesley as someone getting an annual free meal from a sucker, Kerry chose a higher belief. But then, he’s always believed in the best, something he learned through music at a very young age.

“My older sister Melissa and I were taught to sing and harmonize at a very

early age (he was 3). Our father, now retired, was a United Methodist minister and our mother was the church pianist,” Kerry, now 56, recalled. “I was harmonizing with Melissa. She was generally the lead of our duets.”

Until one Sunday morning when Kerry was about 15. That particular morning Melissa woke up with a severe sore throat and was unable to sing at all.

“Our father was concerned because the song we were to sing was a major feature in the message he was bringing that morning. Without the song, his sermon would be missing an important element,” Kerry said. “Mother said, ‘Well, I’ll just tell your father that we don’t have a song for him this morning. It will be fine, I’m sure.’ But Melissa countered, much to my surprise, ‘Let Kerry sing it by himself ! He can sing it as well as I can.’”

Kerry had never sung a solo. He did that morning, and a new career was born.

But he missed preaching too much, and with North Side’s church growth across the years, his opportunities to preach were growing less every year. In 2019, he made the decision to resign from his staff position and return to preaching more regularly.

Then COVID-19 hit, putting a halt to pretty much everything. He currently works as a supply pastor ( fill-in) and is seeking full-time placement. He also focuses on his business, Legacy Audio and Video Recording.

Kerry has produced three recordings over the past 15 years or so. One is available for free from reverbnation. com/kerrypatton where they can be streamed or downloaded. He plays a plethora of instruments, mostly string type, including acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, keys, trombone, ukulele, tenor guitar and tenor banjo.

Along with his sister and two younger siblings who are musically talented, Kerry’s mother is very musical, an accomplished pianist and teacher of pianists with a beautiful singing voice of her own, he said.

Kerry taught his nephew Landon Williams his first guitar chords. Landon went on to become the the rhythm guitarist for the rock band Jagged Row. All four of Kerry’s children are very musical as well, talented singers and instrumentalists, playing guitar, clarinet, trombone, and flute. His wife, Laura, is a featured vocalist in church and a musician in her own right.

“We are a musical family. I honestly don’t know what we would be like as individuals were music to be removed from the equation of us,” he said.

As for his community work, which he does plenty of, Kerry is again humble. He has served on several boards, but refers to himself as “Just a regular dude who lives here and does his thing through the years.”

Meanwhile, he waits for another call from Wesley.

Life in Grace

Rejoice in the Lord Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Philippians 3:1 We live in a world of convenience.

Because of technology and industry, our lives are much easier than our ancestors had it before us. We can get in the car and turn on the heater/air conditioner, and it is only a few minutes before we are comfortable. Our washing machine washes clothes for us and our dishwashers wash the dishes for us. We can attain most everything pretty fast and easy. Sometimes we want our emotions satisfied as quickly as we get everything else taken care of. But there are seasons when we lose our joy and it doesn’t come back as fast as we want it to. At times, joy eludes us and hides behind every corner.

Joy does not come instantly, because it is truly a choice to be joyful in life. Unlike happiness, joy comes from deep down in our hearts and is not a result of circumstances or the things we have or do not have. It cannot be found in a quick and convenient Google search. We may have to fight for it and pursue it so our own emotions will not drown it out. Those times may be the times that we don’t want to fight for it. Those may be the times we just want to crawl under the covers and tell everyone to leave us alone, and this is a vulnerable place for a Christian to be.

A hope deferred makes the heart sick.

Proverbs 13:12 Dangerous gases can gather silently in coal mines and cause deadly explosions. In the early days, coal miners used to use canaries in the coal mines to know whether or not the air is safe. If the birds were singing and chirping, the miners knew their air was safe. If the gas levels rose, the birds would stop singing and eventually fall to the bottom of their cages. The miners knew that the air was unsafe and they would get out.

Joy is like the singing birds. Life can make us lose our joy, and that is a warning for us that something is very wrong. When we take our eyes off Christ, our joy fades. We try to find joy in other places, but nothing else can take the place of Christ in our lives. And just as nothing else can take its place, the circumstances of life cannot snuff out authentic, God-given joy.

So, when joy eludes you, look to Christ and nowhere else to fill that spot. In Philippians 3:1 above, Paul says to rejoice in the Lord because it is safe for us. Why would he say

that? What does that mean?

Finding our joy in the Lord keeps us tethered to what is eternal and real.

All this world offers will fade away.

Even relationships will come and go throughout our life, but the Lord is the one constant we can truly count on. If our joy is found in Him, nothing that comes our way and take that away from us. He is trustworthy and true.

Make it a point to be satisfied in Christ so that you rejoice in the Lord, and you will find true and lasting joy for this life.

A different game plan There hasn’t been any part of 2021 that has been normal by gardening standards.

Let’s take a look at the last part of summer and see if we can make some sense of how we might approach it.

Plant: • Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale from transplants into the vegetable garden in mid-August.

• Marigolds and zinnias from 4-inch pots around mid-August for fall blooms. If possible choose plants that are in bud but not yet in full bloom. They will establish better and provide uninterrupted color for several months.

• New St. Augustine, bermuda or zoysia sod or bermuda seed as early in month as possible to allow grass to become well established before weather starts to cool.

• Nursery stock as you find plants that you want, but water by hand every couple of days to ensure root balls are properly soaked.

• Wildflower seeds into lightly tilled soil where they will not have to compete with turfgrass. Full sun.

Prune: • Remove dead or damaged wood from shrubs that were impacted by February’s cold.

• Deadhead spent flower stalks and seedheads from perennial beds.

• Trim Salvia greggii by 50 percent to stimulate fall regrowth. Fertilize and water after pruning.

• Keep mowing lawn at recommended height. Allowing grass to grow taller does not improve durability to hot, dry conditions.

Fertilize: • Container plants in patio pots and hanging baskets each time that you water them to keep them vigorous. Use water-soluble,

high-nitrogen fertilizer.

• All-nitrogen fertilizer to bermuda turf if it’s been more than 7-8 weeks since you last fed it. Choose a type with a significant amount of slow-release nitrogen.

• Iron-deficient plants with iron/sulfur soil-acidifier product. Look for yellowed leaves with dark green veins most prominent on newest growth (at ends of branches). Keep iron products off masonry and painted surfaces that could be stained.

Timely Tips

Treat with a labeled insecticide.

• Gray leaf spot will cause areas of St. Augustine or zoysia turf to turn light green, then yellow. On closer inspection you’ll see BB-sized, grayish-brown spots. Nitrogen fertilizers aggravate this fungus during hot weather, so do not feed from mid-June until early September. Apply Daconil or Azoxystrobin fungicides to slow current outbreak.

• Apply pre-emergent weedkiller granules Balan, Halts or Dimension last week of August or first week of September to prevent germination of cool-season grassy weeds annual bluegrass (Poa annua), rescuegrass and ryegrass. This is your only way of dealing with these weeds. Don’t miss it! Apply Gallery granules in same time period to prevent germination of broadleafed weeds clover, dandelions, chickweed and henbit.

n All About Copper Plant When I was a kid growing up in College Station, our town was still very small (6,000 residents). Shopping trips to Houston meant that I’d get to go to the big nurseries and see what was new in parks and commercial landscapes.

Somewhere in the late 1950s the Houston Park Department started using masses of copper plants (Acalypha wilkesiana tricolor), and I thought it was the prettiest thing I’d ever seen. Hundreds of them in long beds, neatly groomed to 36 inches and brilliantly colored as fall’s weather (thankfully) cooled.

The plant became a staple item all across Texas for the next 40 years, but gradually it’s disappeared from sight.

That’s a shame, because it’s still deserving of use in our gardens. If anything, it’s more worthy than ever because there are new hybrid types in the market.

So, here’s my suggestion: If you find copper plants in a nursery near you in the next few weeks, grab it and plant it into a patio pot. Enjoy it all fall and watch its colors intensify. If you have a greenhouse, overwinter it there, but if you don’t, just plan on buying more come next summer.
