Linda Schmidt, president of the Palo Pinto County Porcelain Artists, has always been interested in art and crafts but rarely had the time until she retired from BNSF Railway.

“When I retired, it was “a God thing” and everything fell into place for me to start a fired art studio. Since I knew nothing of running a business or fired art, it has been an evolving adventure.”

The studio had regularly-scheduled classes, but those have been put on hold for the time being.

“I developed wonderful friendships at the studio, and we had fun with fused and stained glass classes together with clay, ceramics and oil painting on porcelain.”

Linda explained that it’s possible COURTESY to paint on glass and porcelain using a non-fired medium. However, Painting on porcelain by Linda Schmidt she paints and low fires multiple times to get the depth and detail when using oil mediums on porcelain (commonly referred to as china painting).

“In order to china paint, a person needs to understand how to fire a kiln and what various chemicals do when oils are mixed with the powdered paints and then fired,” she said.

She and her husband of 54 years, Bill, also raise cattle, rescue dogs and cats and wayward roosters. They have three adult children and seven grandchildren.

In addition to the local porcelain group, she’s also on the board of the State Federation of Porcelain Artists of Texas.

“I love color and working with various mediums from dirty clay to glass,” she said.

Her work is not on display to the public. She does occasionally create pieces for friends, but mostly she creates because she just loves painting, she said.

Embroideress creates unique keepsake for baseball fans

by John English Hoopla Correspondent It took Sherry Alsup six months to find the nerve to rip apart her first baseball.

That was the hard part for the 65-year old owner of Sherry’s Creations, an embroidery company that specializes in machineembroidered baseball designs.

Alsup, who moved to Fort Worth in 1979 and has been married for 42 years, said her significant other was not completely convinced she could do it early on.

“My husband doubted me all the way,” Alsup said. “I stitched it out and even got it laced, only missing one hole. Not bad for a first try. My husband was very impressed to say the least. After that, I haven’t stopped making these unique gifts for people.”

Her embroideries include everything from team logos, to clever quotations, to people’s names or family member’s names and much, much more.

Alsup said she actually started her business using bunnies, pillows and quilts for her designs, but started using baseballs four to five years ago for a personal reason.

“I had grandsons playing baseball, and I happened to see a post on Facebook showing machine embroidered baseballs,” Alsup said. “I knew I had to learn how to do it for my grandsons at least.”

Little did she know that this act of affection would grow into what Sherry’s Creations would eventually become.

“I have done a wedding baseball for some avid baseball fans,” Alsup said. “I made two for a slot YouTuber for Slot Con. I added a slot machine, his sayings, the year and his

logo. He gave one away at the event and kept one. I also have done newborn baby baseballs with all of the stats and their name on them. I recently did a Father’s Day baseball for one of my customers for his two sons.

“He used to coach both of them in the younger leagues, so I incorporated a father silhouette and the boys on each side. I did them in the color of their uniforms. I added each one’s name and number, plus the mom asked if I could lace the baseball in each one of the boys team colors...the children will hopefully, someday realize what a unique gift they received that day.”

Alsup said she tries to keep her prices reasonable, and said embroidering has been a passion for her for quite some time.

Embroidering a baseball is an involved process, and it begins withAlsup talking to the customer to get an idea of what he or she is looking for.

If she does not have the team logo, she will get it digitized by a company and then unlace the baseballs and mark them to know exactly where the top and bottom are.

Alsup then designs the baseballs using software, letter by letter, and downloads it onto a USB thumb drive and places it in her embroidery machine.

“Before my new upgrade machine, I had to do the lining up the pedals on a template,” Alsup said. “I’m a perfectionist, so if something wasn’t centered just right, that meant I redid it. Now, fortunately, I have a top-of-the-line Brother machine that has a projector and camera to help me make sure it’s right the first time.”

After that, it is time to relace the baseball, which takes 20-30 minutes per ball.

“Everyone says the baseballs look even better in person than in the pictures,” Alsup said. “Some say they were brought to tears.”

One such client was a mother who wanted to create personalized baseballs for each or her children.

“I had a customer who bought baseballs for her three sons that were playing,” Alsup said. “I knew she had recently miscarried a fourth son. I wanted to do something special for her. I knew he would never have a baseball like his brothers, so I decided to do one for her.

“I put baby feet with a heart between the feet and added wings. The team name was ‘Heaven’s Team,’ with his name and the date of his birth. We were both in tears.”

Alsup said, in recent years, she has started to branch out a bit and work with other mediums.

“I’m currently working on 12 softballs,” Alsup said. “I always have projects. I’m just waiting for a break to do what I want to work on -- other than baseballs. I have a purse for a lady to get completed. Thankfully, she is a great friend and very patient. I hope in the future I learn how to add stitch photos to my baseballs.”

Alsup said he has no plans of stopping any time soon, either.

“I really enjoy creating these baseballs and softballs,” Alsup said. “It gives me a little extra spending money to supply all of my crafts, fabric and supplies. Plus, there’s the benefit of making someone happy. That part never gets old.”

Watermelon Ice Cream Bars Watermelon Curd: 3/4 cup watermelon juice 2 tablespoons lime juice 1/2 cup honey 1 pinch salt 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), cut into small cubes Crust: 8 graham crackers, crushed 2 tablespoons honey 1 pinch salt 4 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled basil leaves, for garnish Whipped Cream: 1 cup heavy whipping cream To make watermelon curd: In medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine watermelon juice, lime juice, honey and salt.

Stir to combine then add eggs.

Place pan over medium heat and cook, adding cubed butter to pan and stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats back of wooden spoon. Immediately remove from heat and carefully pour through fine mesh sieve. Cool completely in refrigerator.

To make crust: Preheat oven to 350 F. In food processor, pulse graham crackers until rough crumbs form. Add honey, salt and melted butter; pulse until mixture resembles wet sand.

Line 8-by-8-inch pan with parchment paper then press graham cracker mixture into bottom of pan in even layer. Bake crust about 10 minutes, or until just beginning to brown. Allow crust to cool completely. Add curd to crust and chill.

Former Carswell base commander Bill Mohr, now in Azle, reflects on life, love and timing

“Let’s talk about being at the right place at the right time,” said former Carswell Air Force Base Commander Bill Mohr. He said it’s a common theme throughout his life.

Bill went to Western Kentucky University on a football scholarship. While he was there, he spent a lot of time thinking about a girl named Betty, who was back home in Louisville. It didn’t start out as anything serious. He took her out whenever he was in town — if she wasn’t dating someone else.

“Timing is everything,” he said.

Luckily, Bill was at the right place enough times that the pair started to miss one another while he was away at college and Betty was in nursing school.

So they began spending more time together and sharing their dreams.

Bill’s ultimate goal was to teach industrial arts. The pay for that position was better than most teaching positions due to a shortage in the field, plus he enjoyed some of the related classes he took in high school.

“I thought it would be fun to teach others those skills,” he said.

While he was finishing up his bachelor’s degree in eduBill Mohr cation, he decided to sign with the Air Force for a few years. It was during the Vietnam War, and he wanted to do his part.

“I had no intention of staying in the military for 30 years,” he said.

He passed the entrance exam but was 50 pounds overweight. That’s when Bill took up running, something he continued for decades. And, by the time he graduated, he’d lost the weight and officially committed to the Air Force.

Why the Air Force? Why not?

Bill and Betty married a few months after he was recruited — in October of 1957.

He needed a temporary job while he awaited his COURTESY first assignment, and as luck would have it, they needed someone to roll cigarettes down at Brown & Williamson, where his dad was a machinist. He didn’t apply for the job. Bill has never applied for a job. He’s just always in the right place at the right time or knew the right people.

It was only a week after Bill and Betty’s wedding that he received his first assignment. The couple moved to San Antonio AFB for the next six weeks.

“We went on a honeymoon to the Air Force,” he joked.

Bill says, even though he didn’t plan a career in the military, he was fortunate to fly for 30 years. His assignments included Vietnam, where he was in a super secret organization that helicoptered out every day to communicate with mercenaries, who told them where to make strategic air strikes in Cambodia and Laos.

There were a lot of close calls. But, usually, Bill was at the right place at the right time.

“It’s been an interesting life. I’m very lucky though,” he said.

After Vietnam, Bill was reassigned to Michigan, where he was the director of training. His unit was awarded Best Flying Unit In The Command, an honor that he considers his big step to success.

Despite that success, he still longed to teach, so he earned a master’s degree in education from InterAmerica Uni-

versity while he was stationed in Puerto Rico. Then, while he was still in Strategic Air Command, he taught for two years at Georgetown University in D.C. Bill and Betty had two sons, Greg and Steve, and moved 28 times during their marriage. Bill was considering retirement in Omaha, Nebraska, when a threestar general suggested the family move once more so that Bill could take a base commander position. The general said it would allow Bill to get established in a community before retirement, which might create other opportunities.

“You meet all of the city people if you’re in a base commander job because you’re the host for so many things and have such an impact on the city,” he explained.

The family moved to Carswell in 1985.

Luck struck again when the family was given the keys to a 4,517-square-foot mini-mansion as a base house. It backed up to a horse farm and a private lake. The house was built by a WWII doctor, who sold it to the military in 1920. President Franklin D. Roosevelt briefly stayed at the house. In fact, an elevator was added to accommodate him. It was quite a house, even for a base commander.

Bill retired from Carswell in October of 1987. He said he’s proud that he kept Carswell running smoothly during his time there.

Upon retirement, Betty and Bill left the spacious base house and relocated to Lakeside, a small community in West Tarrant County. They enjoyed a more relaxing life and more time for hobbies.

Their prized possession was a 30-foot Catalina that they loved to sail on Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth.

As anticipated, Bill did get to know a lot of people in the community during his time as base commander, and he met even more folks when he joined the Lakeside City Council. When the city manager quit in a huff, Bill agreed to fill in until they could find a replacement.

“They didn’t find a replacement for 14

years,” he said with a laugh.

Fortunately, Bill found the position relatively easy.

“Being a base commander is exactly like running a city,” he said. “You have the police, you have the reports, the housing, the engineering. The only difference is you had to stick to a budget.”

During his time as the Lakeside city manager, he’s most proud of making the town financially stable. When he started the city manager position, Lakeside’s total assets were $200,000. When he retired, the town had $1.5 million in the bank and thousands of dollars in capital assets.

After living in Lakeside for 33 years, the couple felt it was time to relocate to a senior community that offered independent living.

“It was a big decision. We were in good health. We had a beautiful house that overlooked the lake. But, it was time,” he said.

They sold the boat and, three years ago, they moved into Legacy Oaks of Azle. The senior community had recently opened, so they had their choice of units, and the two bedroom model they chose is modern and more spacious than you might imagine.

living community with his dog, Tigger.

“It doesn’t make a difference because the food here is too good,” he said with a smile.

He’s made close friends within the community, too, including some who convinced him to take his meals in the dining hall after Betty died last year from COVID-19.

“They were my savior,” he said.

When Betty was alive, the two rarely ate in the dining hall since they had a full-size kitchen in their apartment and their car was parked only a few feet from their back door.

“It’s just like a real house, but there’s no maintenance or anything,” he said.

He does have a small, fenced yard but it’s well manicured by the staff.

Housekeeping is also provided.

There’s even an on-site pet spa for Tigger. He says management is very responsive to any issues that may arise.

Living at an independent living facility also gives peace of mind to his family. Their oldest son, Steve, is nearby in Keller. He’s a pilot for American Airlines. Greg is a safety director for the Miami Beach school system. Bill has one grandchild, Cara, who recently graduated from nursing school.

As he sat at his dining room table, looking through scrapbooks, he said he regrets nothing in his 87 years.

“I’ve had a great life,” he said.

And, once again, Bill Mohr feels like he’s at the right place at the right time.

The sweet fruit of forgiveness Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32 God’s greatest gift was the gift of faith - enabling us to have a relationship with Him. His second greatest gift is forgiveness which enables us to have a relationship with others and for God to have relationship with us. The fruit of forgiveness is the sweetest fruit there is – the forgiveness we get from Jesus Christ and the forgiveness He expects us to pass on. Just as He has forgiven us, He expects us to do the same for others, no matter the offense. Forgiveness is just as much for our benefit (If not more!) as theirs. When we don’t forgive, it affects our relationship with God. Forgiveness means forgetting the past and moving forward.

It doesn’t change the past or erase what happened, but it can change the future. A seed of unforgiveness doesn’t stay in seed form. It grows until it is full grown bitterness and can leave a wake of destruction in its path. Unforgiveness will only cause us to hurt others and once you are bitter with one person, it is easy to become bitter at more and more people.

Sometimes those closest to us are the ones that hurt us the most and are the hardest to forgive.

It is only through the grace we received when we were saved that we can even begin to forgive. We have to be grace personified to pass it on to others. We can do this through the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ in us brings peace, joy, love, and hope to the world. Forgiving can change our spirit and make us more like Him. There is nothing as sweet as forgiveness for a wrong. The feeling and weight that lays on a soul that is harboring guilt and shame is heavy and the blessed grace of forgiveness lifts all the guilt and shame away. Forgiving others lifts

the bitterness off our hearts and reminds us that we have been forgiven and desperately need that grace and forgiveness over and over again.

Steps to Forgiveness: Ask God to reveal to you those you hold resentment toward - If you feel bitterness in your heart, chances are you know exactly who you are bitter towards. We don’t easily forget who had wronged us.

But if you are not sure why you feel this way, ask God to reveal to you those you hold resentment toward.

Bring the list to Jesus – Lay them at Jesus feet along with your hurts

Release them and pray God’s blessing for them – Really pray for them – good things. Then leave them there. It is not yours to deal with now. Release them into God’s hands.

Forgiveness is hard and sometimes there is no apology, but even without an apology you can still forgive. Do it for your heart and for your relationship with Jesus.

Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Colossians 3:13 NLT

There are items related to other stars from that era as well. Lefty died at age 47 from a stroke back in 1975. He and his brother, David Frizzell, are Corsicana natives. The museum is located in Pioneer Village, a group of restored buildings and cabins from Navarro County.
