‘Protect rights, ensure safety of journalists’ Remarks by the ZUJ president Michael Chideme

G

ood evening ladies and gentlemen of the Press. Tonight is very special because we are gathered to celebrate journalistic excellence and to cherish the work of our brothers and sisters who have stood neck high amongst their peers. To help us celebrate this day is none other than our guest of Honour, Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Cde Saviour Kasukuwere. Thank you Cde minister for accepting our invitation and agreeing to hear the different professional hurdles that we face. They include bread and butter issues, welfare and lack of decent housing for journalists. We have previously tabled our issues with other government ministers who have graced our NJAMA in the past. The reason we continue to pester you speaks volumes of the progress on the matter. We appeal to your ministry to make an intervention on the issue of decent housing for our journalists. Cde Minister, in your other capacity, you are the National Political Commissar of Zanu PF. We appeal to you and all other political parties to protect the working rights, safety and protection of journalists in all forms of engagements. We appeal to you to influence political, business and other activists to protect ‘the messengers of information’. Any statements that attack the integrity of our profession do not do us any good as a country. We need to be viewed as a country that promotes and tolerates freedom of expression. As a Union, we continue to urge our members to exercise the highest standards professional, ethical and quality journalism. We need to practice this, while recognising that bad journalism can fuel conflict. I would also like to make a special thank you

to all our sponsors who continue to have faith in the ZUJ and NJAMA brand in an economic environment which is very difficult. We salute you all. May the Good Lord replenish the coffers that you emptied to support us.

istry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, Retired Major Dr Anyway Mutambudzi, who was representing the permanent secretary in the ministry, George Charamba. “I would want to add my support to the various programmes which ZUJ has embarked on to promote the safety and security of its members,” Honourable Kasukuwere said. members, ZUJ embarked on safety training for its members. Members suggested the need for the union to produce Press jackets to protect journalists from attacks by different activists. ZUJ president, Michael Chideme said: “We know that ordinarily people in Zimbabwe respect the Press and, therefore, the safety jacket and cap will ensure that people can identify and respect journalists. We are very excited that celebrities and prominent politicians in government have added their voices to our calls for improved safety and security of journalists.”

The Radiation Protection Authority of Zimbabwe (RPAZ) Board, Management and Staff would like to congratulate all 201415 National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) winners. RPAZ is a proud sponsor of NJAMA and wishes to congratulate the organisers of this very important event and all the winners in the various categories including the inaugural Reporter of the Year on Cancer and Radiation issues Ms Phyllis Mbanje of The Standard Newspaper (pictured above). RPAZ takes cogniscence of the important role of the media in information dissemination especially on issues to do with radiation and cancer in this country. This recognition has led to RPAZ playing a key role in motivating local media practitioners to develop an interest in reporting radiation and nuclear issues. During the course of this year, RPAZ conducted a media workshop to conscientise members of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists on cancer and radiation issues. A few weeks ago, RPAZ unveiled a sponsorship package within the framework of NJAMA, which will be availed annually to a media practitioner who reports and creates awareness on cancer and radiation issues among the public. RPAZ has also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding between itself and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists to foster continuous cooperation between the two organisations. RPAZ continues to play its role in national development by protecting people and the environment against harmful effects of radiation through: -Implementation of effective regulatory processes -Licensing of radiation users -Inspection of all facilities using radiation and -Monitoring all employees exposed to radiation in their day to day work RPAZ Offices 1 McCAW Drive Avondale Harare

500 media employees lose jobs Speech by ZUJ secretary-general Foster Dongozi

T

his year’s NJAMA awards were held under a dark cloud of unprecedented job losses following the infamous July Supreme Court Ruling which gave employers the right to terminate workers’ contracts upon issuing three months notices. Cde minister, the media industry was not spared and this resulted in more than 500 media workers losing employment. We urge those who were affected by the Supreme Court Tsunami to consider being their own employers. The digitalisation process creates opportunities for the development of content which will be needed by the many television and radio stations. Former ZUJ secretary-general, Tapfuma Machakaire is leading by example as he has established himself as a leading content producer for the national broadcaster through his: Communities in Action Programme. We are aware that some media organisations have taken advantage of the Supreme Court ruling to turn organisations into family cartels. In other words, we demand that transparency and accountability be adhered to as other employers are using the Supreme Court ruling to settle scores with workers, particularly trade unionists and workers who demand transparency and accountability. In addition the awards are also being held following the collapse to two major publications, that is Southern Eye and Zimbabwe Mail. Another publication, The Zimbabwean is shutting down. While we may mourn the closure of some media outlets, which is the trend across the world, let us see what opportunities we can derive from the growth and influence of ICTs. It is not by coincidence that ICTs have a category in the awards, but a reflection of the reality of

the influence of ICTs in our lives. ZUJ has also received funding to embark on an ICTs training programme for its members around the country. On issues to do with sexual harassment and gender discrimination of our members, we have held training programmes and we are happy to say we have managed to put the issues on the menu and get people to discuss them. Our next task is to launch campaigns to ensure the implementation of gender policies and practical interventions on sexual and other forms of harassment. The assaults of journalists, particularly photographers, has equally been alarming and this has included the beating of female photographers. As an intervention to improve the safety and security of journalists, the union has decided to provide safety jackets and caps so that it becomes easy to identify them while they are on assignment.

Kasukuwere supports ZUJ calls for decent housing BY FOSTER DONGOZI

L

ZIMBABWE

OCAL Government, Public Works and National Housing minister Honourable Saviour Kasukuwere has endorsed calls by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, ZUJ, for government and local authorities to facilitate the acquisition of decent accommodation for journalists. Kasukuwere made the remarks at a colourful National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) Dinner Gala where he was the guest of honour. Over the years, ZUJ has argued that the provision of affordable and decent accommodation for its members nationwide was crucial in ensuring that journalists execute their mandate ethically and professionally. And Honourable Kasukuwere did not disappoint. “As a ministry responsible for national housing delivery, I see a lot of scope in journalists being empowered by providing them with affordable housing which ultimately gives them the dignity and decency they deserve in our society.” The awards were held under the theme: A Professionally Empowered Media Workforce. “It is my conviction that empowered people are more motivated, leading to better performance, professionalism and high productivity. I call on the ZUJ leadership to engage officials at my ministry as soon as possible in order to find a way forward.” Honourable Kasukuwere said in addition, his ministry was willing to support an award that would relate

to municipal service provision with a high likelihood that the winner would receive a fully serviced residential stand. The media was a key ally in areas of service delivery, he said. “Let me hasten to point out the importance of media coverage on service delivery particularly by local authorities in partnership with residents. As a ministry, we greatly depend on the media to provide credible information to both the government and citizenry especially in the area of municipal service delivery which is a key element towards the goal of making our cities and human settlements safe, resilient and inclusive.” The Minister said in order to make this goal a reality, the media needed to pay attention to: Urban renewal programmes especially in the old suburbs of our cities to arrest urban blight Access to clean potable water Removal of both solid and liquid waste Rehabilitation of road infrastructure Housing and social amenities infrastructure provision Public street lighting Expanded public works programs which are resident centred “It is my firm belief that the media plays a crucial role in service delivery through articulating the citizens’ aspirations, expectations and challenges as information is disseminated on the same. I am concerned that too often, the media have become too focused on polarising political issues at the expense of important issues affecting citizens.”

Congratulatory Message The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Zimbabwe joins The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) in congratulating Thandeka Moyo and Jairos Saunyama on winning the 2014/15 National Journalistic and Media Awards (NJAMA) for the Maternal Health and Gender Based Violence (GBV) Reporter of the Year, respectively. NJAMA Awards

Faces behind glitzy NJAMAS 2014-2015

Admin Assistant Loraine Chisvo

T

HE National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) which were held on October 15 at a Five Star Hotel lived up to high expectation as the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, ZUJ, rolled out a glamorous and glitzy show . The following staffers made sure we came up with the jaw-dropping spectacle. Everyone at the Secretariat played very important roles and no contribution was bigger or smaller. Eric Matingo, Consultant Programmes Officer: He worked hard with the team, ensuring that the necessary spadework was conducted ahead of the event. This included providing guidance and direction on all correspondence as well as liaising and attending meetings with sponsors and stakeholders. Well done! Tonderai Taonezvi, Finance and Admin Officer: Tonde’s stock keeps rising every year. He proved his value to ZUJ by ensuring that the financial side of the preparations were well-oiled and managed like a crack military unit. He is a committed and hardworking comrade and we acknowledge the critical role that he played in the just-ended NJAMA. Obviously, not many people would sing the praises of money people such as Tonde and his efficiency and insistence on accountability can be quite exasperating to the uninitiated! It is that quality and the financial discipline brought by Tonde that ensures we deliver efficiently run awards for members and sponsors. Well Done Tonde! Loraine Chisvo, Admin Assistant: She co-

Intern Leonorah Ncube ordinated the awards and played a key role in ensuring that we did not disappoint our partners and stakeholders. She indeed rose up to the challenge and consulted, planned, implemented and executed her duties well. Talking to sponsors requires the setting up of appointments or talking to them on the phone, appointments can be changed at the drop of a hat or rescheduled and we were able to clinch some of our very important sponsorship deals with the full participation of the team. Well done! Brian Mahaka, Driver/Messenger: Brian, who was responsible for all the transport logistics pre and post NJAMA, distinguished himself well as a hardworking and efficient person. Not once did anybody complain about his work and by the way, we are sticklers for precision and efficiency. This is one of the hallmarks of the work ethic at the ZUJ Secretariat – ruthless efficiency, excellence of execution and unequalled team work. Keep it up! Sthandwa Ncube, Consultant Programmes and Gender Mainstreaming: Having joined the ZUJ team this year, Sthandwa played a critical role in the team that put up the splendid NJAMA event. She was among the people who showcased the ZUJ Safety Jacket and Cap during the event to advocate for the Safety and Protection of journalists, particularly women journalists. Leonorah Ncube: An intern from the Midlands State University. Very enthusiastic and active participant to the success of NJAMA. We wish her all the best.

NASHE Murombedzi has won the child reporting category of the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) in the last two years. In partnership with UNICEF, ZUJ has over the years, engaged young people to participate in journalism and information dissemination. Children can do this as sources of news, disseminating, packaging and consuming information. ZUJ, gives you her brief fact file – in her own words: I am Anashe Murombedzi, a 16-year-old girl who loves people and I am sociable. I am in Form 3 at Fatima Zahra College in Hatfield, Harare. I like public speaking and debating. I am proud to be, and draw strength from the Albino Association of Zimbabwe. I go to Church and enjoy reading the Bible daily. I like to help young people who may be in difficult circumstances, or need someone to talk to.
