Dear friends,

Іноді здається, що перекладачі поділені на три паралельні світи, які майже не перетинаються: художній переклад, письмовий спеціалізований і усний. На сторінках журналу ми поєднуємо всі три світи, і виявляється, між ними немає чітких кордонів, у всіх перекладачів більше спільного, ніж відмінного.

Sometimes translators/ interpreters seem to be living in three parallel universes which almost never cross: the universes of artistic translation, specialized translation and interpreting.

On the pages of the journal we bring together all three of them, and they appear to have much more in common than one could expect.

Основною спільною рисою є те, що вони заглиблюються у мови, постійно знаходяться у пошуку правильних підходів до перекладу, розмірковують над своїм життям у професії. Звісно, поєднати перекладачів на сторінках журналу простіше, ніж у реальному житті, але ж починати з чогось треба!? У цьому номері ми пропонуємо зустріч із письменником, який не відділяє свою перекладацьку діяльність від літературної творчості і сприймає переклад як можливість позмагатися з автором. Художній переклад неможливий без сприйняття способу мислення автора, відчуття ритму розповіді та багатьох інших складових, про які можна прочитати в інтерв’ю з перекладачкою «Пастки-22» Джозефа Геллера. Крім розмов з письменниками і перекладачами, у цьому номері можна прочитати про унікальні перекладацькі проекти, які зараз реалізуються в Україні. Невичерпна тема – це подорожі перекладачів, і цій темі присвячено дві статті номеру, з яких ви дізнаєтесь про несподівані та корисні навички подорожнього перекладача, і про чудовий власний проект, у якому поєднується і письменництво, і перекладацтво, і подорожі. They all understand languages deeply, they are constantly growing professionally, speculate on their life within translation. It is surely easier to unite translators and interpreters in the journal than in real life, but it is worth doing, is it not!?

In this issue you can find an interview with an author who does not separate his translation experience from literary writing, and every takes a chance to compete with the author of a book.

Artistic translation impossible only if you understand the author’s way of thinking, feel the rhythm of a narration – you can read about it, and about other important nuances of literary translation in the interview with the translator of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22.

This issue also tells about unique multi-language translation projects now running in Ukraine.

Another endless subject for discussion is translators’ and interpreters’ journeys. Here you can get some useful tips from a travelling interpreter, and also read about a wonderful original project involving writing, translating and travelling.

TRANSLATION AS A PART OF A GREAT BOOK AN AUTHOR IS WRITING DURING HIS LIFE INTERVIEW WITH YURIY ANDRUKHOVYCH How the translations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet appeared, if Hamlet “changed” in the translated text, how the author works with the translators of his books, how The Lovers of Justice were written, and other interesting things in the interview with Yuriy Andrukhovych.

6 Ваші "Гамлет" і "Ромео і Джульєтта" — найближчі до сучасного українського читача за всі інші переклади. Як виникла ідея їх перекласти? Це почалося з "Гамлета", якого мене кілька років просив перекласти для його тодішнього Молодого театру Станіслав Мойсеєв. І в нього було принципове прохання зробити це якомога сучаснішими мовними засобами. Я не дуже вірив, що це мені під силу і довго відмовлявся. А потім — так захотіла випадковість — перебуваючи у Штатах, отримав запрошення в гості до видатного польського поета Станіслава Бараньчака. Він подарував мені кілька шекспірівських п'єс у своїх перекладах. Я став читати — і раптово зрозумів, що це дуже моє. Ну тобто я захотів і собі позмагатися з Бараньчаком, а заодно і з Шекспіром. Я працював над "Гамлетом" усю осінь 1999 року. В Молодому театрі переклад мій дуже сподобався, і в червні 2000-го я побував на прем'єрі. Проте я на той час іще не думав про те, аби цей переклад публікувати книжкою. Він жив собі на театральній сцені — то й гаразд. Багато років по тому я витягнув його з комп'ютерного архіву, перечитав — і віддав Іванові Малковичу в роботу. Для цього видання я дещо у своєму первісному перекладі позмінював, хоча нічого принципового. Зважаючи на успіх мого "Гамлета", я знову захотів позмагатися і з Шекспіром, і з Бараньчаком.

2007-го я почав переклад "Ромео і Джульєтти", проте це вже не було на замовлення конкретного театру, а радше для власного задоволення. Я працював над цим другим перекладом не так зібрано

Your translations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet are adapted for a modern reader much more than other translations. How did you get the idea to translate them in the first place?

It all started with Hamlet. Stanislav Moiseiev asked me to translate it into Ukrainian for Molodyi Teatr (Young Theatre). He specially asked me to use the latest Ukrainian linguistic tools to translate it. I did not really believe I could do it, and I did not agree to do so for a while. Then, by chance, while visiting the US, I got an invitation from the renowned Polish poet Stanisław Barańczak. He gave me a number of Shakespeare’s plays that he himself had translated.. I started reading them and I realized that it was all very close to me. I mean, I just decided then to compete with not just Barańczak, but Shakespeare as well. I spent the entire autumn of 1999 working on Hamlet. Molodyi Teatr liked the work I had done, and in June, 2000 I went to see the first night’s performance. Though, at that particular moment, I did not dream of having this translation published as an actual book. It was then staged and performed, and it was good enough.

Years later I took it out of the computer archive, revised it, and gave it to Ivan Malkovych1 to publish.

For this publication, I somewhat changed the initial translation, though the changes were not that significant.

Taking into account my success with translating Hamlet, I wanted to compete with Shakespeare again, as well as with Stanisław Barańczak. In 2007, I began translating Romeo and Juliet but it was not ordered by any theatre, so it was more for my own personal pleasure.

I was not as focused on this translation as when I had been 1

Мене ніхто не підганяв, і я, можна сказати, розтягував задоволення, тож десь аж 2011-го той переклад був завершений. Звичайно, я намагався пильнувати за тим, щоб той перекладацький стиль, який я заявив у "Гамлеті", зберігся і в другому перекладі. Можливо, це і є те, що Ви називаєте наближенням до сучасного українського читача. Щоб він якоюсь мірою забував про Шекспірову "класичність" і сприймав його тексти як цілком сучасні.

Я думаю, що переклад — і надто ж коли йдеться про драматичний твір — можна порівняти з режисурою. Тобто перекладач "Гамлета", як і режисер вистави "Гамлет", має право на власне прочитання. Звичайно, в межах цілковитої поваги до автора та його оригіналу. Наскільки, на Вашу думку, шекспірівські образи зазнали змін у Ваших перекладах? Чи відрізняється Ваш Гамлет, скажімо, від оригінального? Я думаю, що переклад — і надто ж коли йдеться про драматичний твір — можна порівняти з режисурою. Тобто перекладач "Гамлета", як і режисер вистави "Гамлет", має право на власне прочитання. Звичайно, в межах цілковитої поваги до автора та його оригіналу. Тобто в жодному разі не можна нічого перекручувати. Чи щось там за автора дописувати або скорочувати. Навіть на мікрорівні я дуже стежив за вірністю оригіналові. Наприклад, за кількістю поетичних рядків — щоб вона обов'язково дорівнювала їхній кількості в оригіналі. Щоб шекспірівський п'ятистоповий ямб завжди був п'ятистоповим ямбом. А там, де рима в оригіналі, обов'язково щоб була рима в перекладі. Тому я не згоден, що Шекспіра в мене якось переінакшено. Я просто увиразнив деякі акценти і стилістично наблизив мову до сьогоденної.

working on Hamlet: I took breaks, put it aside, and then resumed working.

Nobody pushed me, and I took my time while enjoying the process. I completed the translation in 2011. Of course, as I was translating another Shakespearean play I was doing my best to stick to the style I used in Hamlet. Perhaps it is what you call bringing the text closer to modern Ukrainian readers, so that they could forget about Shakespeare’s plays being merely outdated “classics”, and hopefully perceive his texts to be absolutely modern ones.

I think translation, especially that of a drama, can be compared to staging. I mean Hamlet’s translator, just like a theatre director staging Hamlet, has the right to have his own interpretation of any given text, certainly paying due respect to the author and the authenticity of the original text.

Do you feel Shakespeare’s imagery changed a lot in your translations? What are the differences between your Hamlet and Shakespeare’s?

I think translation, especially that of a drama, can be compared to staging. I mean Hamlet’s translator, just like a theatre director staging Hamlet, has the right to have his own interpretation of any given text, certainly while paying due respect to the author and the authenticity of the original text. You should never add anything to the author’s text, distort it in any way or make it shorter. Even at a micro-level, I followed the language of the drama with care.

For instance, I made sure that the number of the verse lines were the same as in the original text. This meant for example, making sure that Shakespeare’s iambic pentameter was never anything else but the iambic pentameter, for each rhyme in the source text, I made sure to have a rhyme in the translation. So I do not agree that Shakespeare has been somehow changed in my translations. I just made some accents more expressive and brought the language somewhat closer to modern parlance.

Чи відрізнялися відчуття, коли Ви дивилися прем'єру "Гамлета" і під час постановки, наприклад, "Московіади". Чи відчували Ви, що дивитесь постановку свого власного твору?

Did you have different feelings while watching the first night of Hamlet and then subsequently during the performance of Moskoviad? Did you feel that you were watching your own play?

Мені доволі складно це порівнювати. Поперше, тому що обидва спектаклі я бачив лише по одному разу, "Гамлета" ще 2000-го, а "Московіаду" 2006 року. При цьому "Гамлет" був абсолютною прем'єрою, тож виглядав ще, як і належиться прем'єрі, сирувато. "Московіада" натомість уже певний час гралася, тож для акторів була звичнішою. Інша відмінність: "Московіада" як п'єса не є моїм твором, це інсценізація мого роману, яку зробила інша людина. Тому обидві постановки залишали в мене дещо відсторонене враження. Таке, що ці спектаклі, хоч якось напряму й пов'язані зі мною, все-таки стовідсотково моїми творіннями не є. Я був більшою мірою глядачем, ніж автором.

It is rather difficult for me to compare them. First of all, I have seen both these plays just once. I saw Hamlet in 2000, and Moskoviad in 2006.

Moreover, it was the first night of Hamlet, so of course, it was as any other first night performance, somewhat raw.. Moskoviad, on the other hand had been on stage for some time, so the actors felt more at ease with it.. Another difference was that Moskoviad was not performed at my behest, as the scenery for staging was written by another author. So I felt rather alienated from both these performances. I generally had an impression that even though these productions were connected directly with me, these plays were not one hundred per cent my creations. I was more of a spectator than an author.

Але по суті це частина мого письменницького проекту, іншими словами — просто частина тієї Книги, яку я досі писав і писатиму протягом усього життя. Коли я збиралася на "День смерті пані День", то не очікувала почути стільки перекладів. Тоді я подумала, що для Вас, мабуть, переклад складає значну частину творчого життя. Чи дійсно це так, і які стосунки у Андруховичаписьменника і Андруховича-перекладача. Вони допомагають чи заважають один одному? Так, це принципово цікавий момент. На сьогодні я маю таку відповідь, що за великим рахунком перекладачем я себе не вважаю. Тобто якщо я беруся щось перекладати, то формально я, звісно, стаю перекладачем. Але по суті це частина мого письменницького

I did not expect to hear so many translations at Ms Day’s Death Day performance. Then I thought that translation must play a great part in your creative life. Is it really so? What are the relations between Andrukhovych the author and Andrukhovych the translator?

Do they help each other or is it the other way around?

Yes, it is a really interesting point. Today, my answer is the following: in the main, I do not consider myself to be a translator. What I mean is that if I translate anything, I am officially a translator. However, it is actually a part of my project as a writer, in other words, it is a part of the Book I have been writing so far, and will be writing my whole life.

I do not dare to consider myself a translator in the genuine sense of the word, for to be a real translator

Я не смію вважати себе перекладачем у справжньому сенсі цього слова, бо справжній перекладач — це щоденне і фактично неперервне служіння авторам, яких він перекладає. В моєму ж випадку це трапляється епізодично, від нагоди до нагоди, і якщо це служіння, то лиш одному авторові — самому собі. Я перекладаю, щоб задовільнити свої стилістичні амбіції:)) Чи співпрацюєте Ви з перекладачами своїх творів? Якщо так, то як само? Так, звичайно, співпрацюю, причому максимально. Тобто завжди прочитую все — до останнього рядка і слова. Ну й не просто прочитую, а прискіпливо. Завжди вдається знайти якісь перекладацькі неточності, промахи. Або виправити непорозуміння. От дослівно вчора півдня просидів над англійськими перекладами моїх віршів, які готують до виходу окремою збіркою у США. Перекладачі, Віталій Чернецький та Остап Кінь, обидва українці, тож контекстом володіють чудово. Але все-таки було кілька проблем, на які я звернув їхню увагу. Все, що я досі сказав, поширюється, звичайно, лише на ті мови, якими я володію. Тобто я можу авторизувати (й завжди авторизую) лише переклади російською, польською, німецькою та англійською мовами. Будь-який інший переклад я не можу авторизувати. Але якщо перекладач має до мене запитання, просить про уточнення, то наша співпраця відбувається принаймні на такому — я б його назвав консультативним — рівні. Перекладачі, які зі мною не контактують і не мають до мене жодного запитання, викликають у мене деяку підозру:)) Віталій Чернецький перекладає Ваші твори вже більше 10 років — чи можете Ви сказати, що з кожним новим перекладом він швидше і глибше відчуває Ваші твори? Це вже навіть не більше 10-ти, а всі 20 років. Протягом яких Віталій дуже виріс як перекладач. Тут важливо, що, крім мовної сенситивності та глибочезної ерудованості, він ані на хвилину не втрачає живого контакту з Україною, буває в нас по кілька разів на рік, перебуває, так би

means to serve the authors you translate. Actually I translate sporadically, and if it is serving, then I serve the only author, and it is me. I translate to satisfy my stylistic ambitions :)) Do you co-operate with the translators of your books? If yes, how exactly?

Yes, I certainly co-operate with them, as much as possible. I always read everything -right down to the very last line and word. I do not just read but I scan each text thoroughly. I am usually able to notice some translator’s inaccuracies, laxities, etc.. Or else I am able to correct some misunderstanding within any given part of a text.

For instance, I spent half the day yesterday looking over the English translation of my verses to be published as a collection of poems in the USA. The translators Vitaly Chernetskyi and Ostap Kin are both Ukrainians, so they know the context perfectly. Still there were a few issues I brought their attention to.

All the aforementioned concerns only the languages I know. It means I can, and usually do authorize just the translations into Russian, Polish, German and English.

I cannot authorize other translations. However, if a translator asks questions or wants me to specify something, then our co-operation is more of a consultative nature, I’d say.

The translators who do not contact me and do not have any questions to ask seem somewhat suspicious to me. :)) Vitaly Chernetskyi has been translating your books for over 10 years now — could you say that having translated your works, now he can really cut to the heart of the text better than anyone else?

He has actually been working for me for over 20 years now, and, within this period Vitaly has grown considerably as a translator. It is important to mention that apart from being linguistically aware and deeply sophisticated, he has never, even for a minute, lost his connection with Ukraine. He visits us several times a year, and stays, so to say, within the context, within our themes and trends. I am so happy that after successful translations of Moskoviad and Twelve Rings he is willing to work on The Lovers of Justice.

10 мовити, всередині контексту, включений у наші теми та тенденції. Я дуже радий, що після вдалих перекладів "Московіади" і "Дванадцяти обручів" він охоче візьметься за "Коханців Юстиції".

До прикладу, зі Самійлом Немиричем у мене найтриваліше в часі співіснування — цілих 29 років, адже все починалося з вірша "Самійло Немирич, посаджений за ґвалт у вежу, самому собі". А потім уже написався прозовий текст, який багато років по тому виявиться першим розділом "Коханців Юстиції". Хто з "коханців юстиції" викликає у Вас найбільшу симпатію? Тут немає простої відповіді. З кожним із них мене пов'язує якийсь доволі специфічний сантимент. До прикладу, зі Самійлом Немиричем у мене найтриваліше в часі співіснування — цілих 29 років, адже все починалося з вірша "Самійло Немирич, посаджений за ґвалт у вежу, самому собі". А потім уже написався прозовий текст, який багато років по тому виявиться першим розділом "Коханців Юстиції". Інша ситуація з Альбертом Вироземським, який 2013 року став героєм нашого з друзями мультимедійного перформенсу, який ми встигли зіграти вже на трьох десятках сцен у різних куточках нашої країни і двічі за кордоном. Ще інші — з Маріо Понґрацом або Мирославом Січинським. Або "Сансара", пошук слідів якого без перебільшення випив досить багато моєї крові:) Підсумовуючи, можу відповісти від протилежного: найменшу мою симпатію викликає "вбивця-робот" Богдан Сташинський, хоч і він між убивством як покликанням і любов'ю вибирає таки любов. Чи відразу розділи розташувалися у такому порядку, як вони є у романі, і чому? Так, відразу. Єдиним критерієм була хронологія написання. Від давніших до новіших. При цьому кожен наступний розділ не лише обов'язково більший за

Then came the prosaic text that was to become the first part of The Lovers of Justice, many years after.

Speaking about The Lovers of Justice, who of the “lovers” do you like most?

It is not easy to answer that.. I have a connection with all of them through quite a specific sentiment.

For instance, I feel like I have known Samiilo Nemyrych for at least 29 years. Everything began with the verse titled Samiilo Nemyrych, Sent to the Tower for Rape, to Himself. Then came the prosaic text that was to become the first part of The Lovers of Justice, many years after.

Another story is about Albert Vyrozemsky, who in 2013 was a character of our multimedia performance, which we presented in different parts of our country and twice abroad. Other such stories were about Mario Pongrac or Myroslav Sichynskyi, not to mention “Sansara” — it was a real challenge to understand that one. .

To sum up I’d reply from the opposite point of view: the least attractive for me is the “killer robot” Bohdan Stashynskyi, though even he chose love over murder.

Did the chapters initially go in the order we find them in the book, and why?

Yes, from the very beginning. The only criterion for that was that they come chronologically, as written.. Each chapter was followed by a larger one, which was also more thorough, detailed, and rich. It was like

Тінь письменника – Author’s Shadow обсягом від попереднього, але й, так би мовити, прописаніший, деталізованіший, багатший. Це наче розгойдування роману до певної амплітуди. Аж урешті останній напіврозділ, де ця амплітуда раптово йде на спад. Маятник немов зупиняє чиясь рука — досить. Іноді я згадую про те, що приблизно до осені 2013-го я ще не бачив цю майбутню книжку романом, а радше збіркою оповідань "про негідників і мерзотників". І щойно з тієї осені я змінив і концепцію, й задум. І почав писати подальші розділи вже не як окремі оповідання, а саме як розділи майбутньої цілості. З огляду на цю зміну я також переписував і доповнював давніші тексти. Збірка оповідань "про негідників" перетворилася на роман про заборонені форми любові.

Чи доводилося чимось жертвувати при перекладі? Напевно, так. Мабуть, не буває перекладу без якогось журтвування. Але в цілому я поводився досить зухвало, вважаючи, що й самі автори оригіналів були дуже зухвалими хлопцями, що програмово уникали будь-якого академізму. Розкажіть трохи про назву. Одного разу мені спала на думку "Юстиція". Якщо згадати про те, що наскрізним мотивом є викривлення людських уявлень про справедливість, утілене в завжди недосконалих системах судочинства, то цього слова було б достатньо. Тим більше, воно непогано лягало у стилістичний ряд деяких моїх попередніх назв (як наприклад, "Перверзія"). Трохи згодом я мусив це змінити, бо в Юрка Винничука саме вийшов був роман "Лютеція". Слово "коханці" в назві прийшлося дуже до речі, якщо мати на увазі оту щойно згадану заборонену любов. Коханці ж — це переважно нелеґали, їхня любов переважно карається людськими законами. Якщо колись я дочекаюся перевидання, то можливо на обкладинці "КЮ" буде велике латинське Q — знак Коханців Юстиції:) Хочу дещо запитати про бітників: Чи Вас приваблює в них більше форма чи зміст? Коли Ви їх перекладаєте, чим доводиться жертвувати?

swaying the novel to a certain amplitude. In the very end the amplitude gets eventually reduced in the final half-chapter. The pendulum is sort of stopped by someone’s hand which says, “that is enough”. I happen to remember that until the autumn of 2013 I saw this book a collection of short stories “about villains and scoundrels”, rather than a novel. That autumn, I changed the whole concept and idea. I wrote the following chapters not as short stories but as parts of the future whole. From this perspective, I revised and completed the older texts. The collection of short stories “about villains” turned into a novel about forbidden romance.

Did I have to sacrifice anything while translating? I must have had to do so at some point. There is hardly ever a translation without sacrifice. Still, I dealt rather bravely with the texts, thinking it appropriate since the authors themselves were rather brave guys, who avoided any academism, by default.

Tell us something about the title.

Once “Justice” came to my mind. Thinking about the fact that the cross-cutting themes of the book are perverted human ideas about justice, embodied in ever imperfect trial systems, this word would be sufficient. Moreover, it went well with my previous titles (for instance, Perversion). Later on, I had to change it, as Yurko Vinnychuk had his novel Liutecia published. The word “lovers” in the title was just what it needed, taking into account the mentioned forbidden romance. Lovers are always illegitimate, and their love is often punished by human laws. If the book ever gets re-published, it might have a big Latin Q as a title. ([kju] for Kokhantsi Justytsii –Ukrainian for “Lovers of Justice”, translator’s note).

I’d like to ask about the Beatniks: are you attracted by the form or the meaning of their texts? While translating them, which of those do you prefer to sacrifice?

I would not use the present tense here, as I finished working on the project (Anthology of American Poetry) 12 years ago, having originally begun it as long as 18 years ago.

До речі, там не лише бітники, хоч вони становлять, напевно, найважливішу частину. Чому я за це був узявся? Передусім тому, що мені здавалося дуже потрібним прищепити сучасній українській поезії трохи схильності до анархізму, неконвенційного мовлення, трохи розкутості й абсолютної творчої свободи. Одна з улюблених бітницьких практик — т. зв. розширення свідомості. То й мені йшлося про те саме: розширення української поетичної свідомості. Я розраховував на те, що книжка заволодіє увагою наших молодих поетів і розширить їм свідомість. Чи доводилося чимось жертвувати при перекладі? Напевно, так. Мабуть, не буває перекладу без якогось журтвування. Але в цілому я поводився досить зухвало, вважаючи, що й самі автори оригіналів були дуже зухвалими хлопцями, що програмово уникали будь-якого академізму. Тому, як завжди, я намагався вгадати дух і міг при цьому мимоволі жертвувати буквою. Це було в їхньому стилі:) І ще одне запитання загального характеру. Чому серед українських письменників так багато перекладачів (і в минулому, і зараз)? Я не думаю, що в цьому якась стійка закономірність. Але якщо навіть так, то це свідчить про те, що письменництво в нас усетаки стало професією. Тобто що в нас утворився доволі широкий прошарок літераторів, які власну оригінальну творчість доповнюють постійною перекладацькою роботою, бо володіють у достатній мірі мовами й наділені відповідним хистом. Тобто це ще й свідчення того, що професійний рівень літературного процесу зростає і він виходить на самодостатність та заповнюється зсередини не тільки оригінальними, але й перекланими текстами. To be precise, the book does not only contain Beatnik poems, though they make up the most important part of it. Why did I take up these translations? First of all, I thought it really necessary to encourage more modern Ukrainian poetry to express more anarchism, non-conventional speech, some freedom of expression and absolute liberty of creation. One of the more popular Beatnik practices was the so-called expansion of consciousness. So I was thinking about it too, i.e. about the expansion of Ukrainian consciousness. I expected the book to capture the attention of young poets and expand their collective consciousness. Did I have to sacrifice anything while translating? I must have had to do so at some point. There is hardly ever a translation without sacrifice. Still, I dealt rather bravely with the texts, thinking it appropriate since the authors themselves were rather brave guys, who avoided any academism, by default. So, I was usually trying to catch their vibe occasionally sacrificing some words. It was their style :) Why in your opinion are so many Ukrainian authors also translators (in the past and now)?

I don’t think there is a strong correlation here. Even if it is true, it just means that being an author has turned out to be a profession in our country. There are a number of writers that add to their creative activity with translation work because they are fluent in different languages and they often have a writing gift. So, the literary process is growing professionally, it is getting more independent and being filled not only with the authenticity of the original works, but also with the subsequent translated texts.

Дякую за запитання, для мене воно звучить як найкраща похвала. Хотілося б віджартуватися фразою з «Пастки-22», що «це була любов з першого погляду», але в дійсності одним з перших вражень від твору, які зараз можу пригадати, було збентеження, навіть острах, бо і стиль оповіді, і гумор, і герої здавались геть чужими і позбавленими смислу.

Thank you for the question, it sounds like the best appraisal I have heard on this matter. I am tempted to say that it was, to borrow a phrase from Catch 22, “love at first sight”. However, when it came to actually getting acquainted with the book, I felt uneasy, even scared, since the style, the humour and the characters seemed absolutely strange to me and they were completely devoid of any sense whatsoever.

Надто тривожний був настрій восени 2014го, коли взялась за переклад, і будь-які жарти, в контексті війни зокрема, було дуже важко сприймати, тим паче відтворювати їх українською.

In autumn 2014, when I started the translation, the situation in the country made me feel anxious, so any jokes within the war context were hard to perceive, and even harder to translate into Ukrainian.

Була навіть думка, що даремно взялася за цей проект, що не дам собі ради. Але порятувала фахова звичка будь-яку роботу, за яку берусь, виконувати на совість, я втягнулась і через кількадесят перекладених сторінок уже «шалено закохалася» в цей роман.

The thought crossed my mind that I should not have agreed to the project, and that I would not be able to cope with it. However, the professional habit of getting my work done to the best of my ability helped in this regard. Basically, I got involved, and after a few dozen pages had been translated, I then “fell madly in love” with the novel.

Тепер, озираючись на книжку, думаю, що все те, що найбільше дивувало і спантеличувало напочатку, згодом стало для мене її найбільшими привабами. Практично все в ній виявляється не тим, чим здається на перший погляд.

Now, looking back at the book, I think that everything that had astonished and confused me in the beginning eventually ended up making the whole thing much more appealing.. Nearly all the

Будь-який інший переклад я робила б максимально якісно, а це значить, з любов’ю до своєї справи, бо інакше я просто не вмію. А такий складний, блискучий і глибокий текст, до того ж актуальний через сучасну війну на сході України, став для мене як для перекладача чималим викликом, а отже, тим захопливішою — праця над ним, і тим більшою — відповідальність.

I would have translated any other book to the best of my ability, which means with the same love for what I do, because it is the only way I can work. It was such an intensely emotional text. The war in Eastern Ukraine made the whole experience all the more challenging. However this excited me even more, and, as a result, I was even more committed to the text.

Надіюсь, мені вдалося не затінити своєю персоною геніального оповідача Джозефа Геллера — і в цьому читачі зможуть самі переконатись.

I hope that I managed not to cast the shadow of my personality upon Joseph Heller’s genius as a narrator, and I also hope the readers can see that for themselves.

This grotesque and eccentric story about the American army during the Second World War is densely populated with caricatures. It is often just ridiculously funny, though behind this freakiness, there is a painful truth about the basic severity and absurdity of war as it is. The author’s artistic perfection is really breathtaking.

Як Ви працюєте над твором, щоб так досконало відчути загальний тон розповіді і атмосферу роману?

How do you work on a text to get an exact feel for the dynamics of the narration and the atmosphere of the novel itself?

З «Пасткою-22» працювала так само, як і з іншими творами. Як звикло, спочатку перечитала доступні статті про автора і про твір. Особливо не зупинялась на цьому підготовчому етапі, бо чужа думка, хоч як переконливо викладена, все одно сприймається до певної міри як абстракція, доки сама глибоко не зануришся в текст.

I was working on Catch-22 in the same way as I would on any other book. As usual, I first read any articles about the author and the book that I could get my hands on.. I did not spend too much time on this preparatory stage because somebody’s train of thought, even when persuasively formulated, is perceived as something rather abstract until you have penetrated into the text yourself.

Затим взялася читати оригінал, хоча, правду кажучи, стало мені снаги лише десь на одну п’яту тексту: надто часто, як на мій досвід читання англійської прози, доводилося зазирати до словника, а фрагментарна оповідь з безліччю героїв і епізодів у цілісну історію ніяк не вкладалася. Однак, для загального враження про стилістику мені цього вистачило.

Then I actually started reading the book. Frankly speaking, I managed to read just one fifth of it. I had to use a dictionary a bit too often, which is not my usual experience of reading English prose.

In the end, the fractured narration with lots of personages and episodes was far from perfect. .

Though, for me, it was enough to understand the stylistics.

16 Окрім того, переглянула кілька розділів перекладу Миколи Мещеряка «Пастка для дурнів», що вийшов у «Дніпрі» в 1988-році, щоб на власні очі переконатися в потребі нового перекладу, в чому мене запевняв видавець. Я мало сенсу бачу в повторних перекладах, якщо вже існує хоч один достатньо адекватний, тому відповідь на це питання була для мене принциповою.

Уява при тому — ключове вміння, яке дозволяє буквально жити цим текстом, бачити і чути те, що бачив і чув автор, перевтілюватися в його героїв. А далі — за стіл і до роботи. Як саме перекладаю і чи роблю щось надзвичайне? Мені важко цей процес описати, адже багато навичок уже давно стали звичними до автоматизму, а багато чого відбувається на підсвідомому рівні. Спочатку уважно, максимально зосереджено читаю текст, речення за реченням; якщо лексика мало відома, користуюсь словниками, на цьому етапі переважно тлумачним; уявляю собі зображуване, стараюсь відчути емоції, вслухаюся в ритм. А тоді шукаю способи передати усе відчитане українською, з одного боку якомога ближче до оригіналу, а з іншого — якомога природнішою мовою. Отак поступово, крок за кроком, що далі то глибше, занурююся в текст, починаю бачити і розуміти щораз більше підтекстів, зрештою, думати як автор. Поступово текст проступає у своїй цілості, приходить краще розуміння кожної деталі — і відповідно з’являється можливість при потребі повернутися і відшукати кращі відповідники. Уява при тому — ключове вміння, яке дозволяє буквально жити цим текстом, бачити і чути те, що бачив і чув автор, перевтілюватися в його героїв. Були ще дві обставини, які змусили ще глибше зануритися в текст, ще краще відчути його атмосферу. Це вже згадана російська агресія і моя вагітність та народження дитини. Вони загострювали напругу і переживання, але водночас змушували шукати і втримувати необхідну рівновагу, насправді дуже помічну в процесі перекладу. То був дуже складний час — і неповторний досвід.

Then I looked through Mykola Meshcheriak’s translation into Ukrainian(published in 1988). . I did this in order to be sure that a new translation was needed, as the publisher was inevitably on my back over this. . I see very little point in retranslating something if at least one adequate translation already exists, so it was very important for me to answer the question if the book actually needed to be translated again.

Imagination is the key skill here, as it allows one to live literally in the text, see and feel what the author felt and heard, all while sort of putting ourselves in the characters’ shoes.

Then I sat at the table and began to work.

How exactly do I translate? Do I do anything extraordinary? It is hard for me to describe the process, as a lot of things have become habitual and I do them automatically, and there are lots of things that happen subconsciously.

Firstly, I read the text in a very attentive and focused manner, sentence by sentence; if there are new words I look them up in the dictionaries, and at this stage they are mostly English-English dictionaries; I imagine what is described therein, and I try to feel the emotions, and sort of listen to the rhythm of the text, as though it were music.

After that, I look for ways to translate all that I have read into Ukrainian. On the one hand, it should be as close to the original as possible, and on the other hand, it should sound as natural as possible.

So gradually, step by step, the deeper I delve into the text, the more I see and understand more and more subtexts, and eventually I begin to think as the author did. The more I get into the meat and bones of any given text, the more I get familiar with the details, — and so, if necessary, I can return to any given point of same and find a better equivalent. Imagination is the key skill here, as it allows one to live literally in the text, see and feel what the author felt and heard, all while sort of putting ourselves in the characters’ shoes.

In the specific case of Catch 22, There were two more reasons, specific to that time, to penetrate deeper into the text so that I could feel the atmosphere of it even better. These reasons were the aforementioned Russian aggression which coincided with my pregnancy and the subsequent birth of my

Інколи перша спроба виявляється цілком вдалою, відповідає моїм вимогам до адекватного, якісного перекладу. Проте здебільшого доводиться ще попрацювати над текстом. Уже записані слова служать певною опорою для свідомості — тоді певна енергія звільняється для подальшого пошуку вдаліших варіантів. До стилю «Пастки-22» я мусила довго звикати. Спочатку здавалося, що в тексті забагато зайвих повторів, що твердження надто суперечливі й алогічні, кортіло щось у тексті урізноманітнити або покращити заради мовної «красивості». З часом налаштувалась на іншу хвилю, почала думати як автор, — краще зрозуміла, як саме стилістика оповіді служить змістові. Згодом я поверталася до попередніх розділів — тоді місцями неясне чи бентежливе ставало виразнішим, прозорішим. Дуже часто остаточне рішення неможливо прийняти відразу — роль і значення деталі стають зрозумілими лише в контексті цілісної картини. Щоб передати ритм оригіналу, треба слухати і ще раз слухати — відтворювати почуте, а тоді знов слухати — спочатку речення, параграф, нарешті цілий розділ. Часто заради милозвучності доводиться переписувати переклад, буває, навіть вибирати інший синонім, який буде менш вдалий змістовно, зате краще вкладеться у ціле речення. Адже добре написані тексти завжди будуть гарно лягати на голос, під час читання язик не заплутається у жмутку приголосних, посеред речення не забракне повітря — хіба таким був задум автора, а це також треба вміти почути

child. They made the tension and anxiety within me even stronger, while at the same time forcing me to search within myself for some sort of balance, which is very helpful for translating. It was a hard time and an unforgettable experience.

What do you usually do with complicated words and sentences that hinder the translation process: do you focus on changing those first or do you usually leave it until later? How do you work with the stylistics involved therein, i.e. the rhythm, the proper names and false friends ?

Once, when I was a student doing a translation course, I remembered the advice to put down the translation solutions that come to your mind immediately , and then work on the draft, and such an approach suits me well.

I subsequently read what I have written several times, compare it with the source text, and finally I revise the Ukrainian text. Sometimes the first try is successful, and it meets my requirements to carry out adequate and quality translations.

However, in most cases I have to work on the text.

The fixed words serve as a support for a translator’s consciousness, and this frees up the mind to allow one to think outside the box.

It took quite some time for me to get used to the style of Catch-22. First of all, the text seemed to be riddled with contradictory and illogical statements, redundant repetitions etc. I felt like making it less rigid..

Later on, I changed my tune, and once I started thinking as the author did, I could better understand how the style helped the meaning. I returned to the previous chapters some time later, and then what had previously seemed unclear and uncertain got to be more expressive and transparent.

It is often not easy to make a final decision at once, since the role and importance of a particular detail can be clearer only in the context of the bigger picture.

To manage the rhythm you should listen and listen to it over and over again, review what you understand and listen to it again. Firstly, one should look at a sentence, then at a paragraph, and then one should examine the whole chapter. You have to rewrite the translation for it to sound better, and sometimes I actually had to give preference to the synonym with the most appropriate sound, fitting

18 і відтворити. Я завжди читаю свої переклади вголос, хоча б подумки. До слова, впевнена, що високу якість мого перекладу «Володар Перстенів» Дж.Р.Р. Толкіна великою мірою можна пояснити якраз тим, що я постійно перечитувала його вголос. Складна лексика «Пастки-22» — це була ще одна причина, чому відкладала деякі речі на потім. Робила нотатки в оригіналі або виписувала окремо на картці, і тоді влаштовувала дискусії зі своїм чоловіком, американцем. Він часто допомагав із розмовними фразами чи роз’яснював надто складні формулювання, бувало, навіть розігрував якусь конкретну сцену, яку ніяк не могла собі уявити. Також допомагав мені з технічними термінами. Наприклад, ми разом вивчали плани і зображення літака Б-25 — правильно перекласти сцени боїв у повітрі, без чіткого уявлення про внутрішню будову літака, я б не змогла. Тому я надзвичайно вдячна йому за підтримку і консультації. Без нього українська версія «Пастки-22» дуже втратила б на якості. Чимало часу я провела у пошуках в інтернеті. Благо, що маємо доступ до практично необмежених ресурсів, був би час і бажання знайти потрібне. Наведу один доволі кумедний приклад, який може ілюструвати відмінність між роботою в до-інтернетівську еру і тепер: у сцені про літаки, що готуються до злету, мене трохи спантеличив опис «Engines rolled over disgruntedly on lollipop-shaped hardstands». Довелось трохи полазити по нету, доки не знайшла зображення військових аеродромів часів Другої світової з площадками для бомбардувальників — бетонованих чи просто втрамбованих як у романі, — які «формою нагадували льодяники на паличках». З цікавості глянула у старий переклад, а там щось несусвітнє: «Сперті на підпорки, двигуни нагадують довгасті цукерки на паличках». З подібними проблемами можна звертатися до експертів, що інколи, хоч не завжди, може зекономити час на пошуки, і в кількох випадках, шукаючи українські відповідники для реалій чи термінів, я так і робила. В будь-якому разі, критичне мислення і допитливість — обов’язкові якості доброго перекладача.

the sentence perfectly, over the one which was closer in meaning.

A well-written text always sounds good when it’s read out loud.The reader’s tongue does not get twisted by a messy set of consonants, and you do not need to exhale extra air while reading. It should be almost accidental, not seeming to have been written that way with any great intent, and this can greatly aid the translation process itself. I always read my translations, at least silently. By the way, I am sure that the high quality of my translation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring was ensured by my reading it out loud while translating it. .

The complex vocabulary contained within Catch-22 was the reason why I put off the translation of some sentences. I made notes in the original or else I wrote them down on a card, and I then discussed them with my husband, who is American. He often helped me with different conversational phrases and explained overly-complicated statements, sometimes even playing out a scene that I could not imagine.

He also helped me with the technical terms. For instance, we studied the drafts and images of a B-25 plane together for me to be able to translate the air battle scenes correctly. This would not have been possible without the knowledge of the inner structure of the airplane. So I am really grateful to him for his support and consultations. Without his help, the Ukrainian Catch-22 would be of lower quality. I spent a lot of time surfing the Internet. It is great that we have access to almost unlimited resources, as all you need is the time and desire to find what you need.

Here is one rather funny example, which can illustrate the difference of work in the pre-Internet era and nowadays: in the plane scene where they are preparing to take off I was a bit confused by the description, “Engines rolled over disgruntedly on lollipop-shaped hardstands”. I then surfed the net until I found a picture of World War Two military aerodromes. The aerodromes contained platforms for combat aircraft, whether concreted or not, which as described in the novel, “were shaped like lollipops’’.

Out of curiosity, I read the old translation and found something peculiar, “the engines on the stand reminded long lollipops”. Confronting such problems you can ask an expert, which if you are lucky can save you some time, and that is what I sometimes did in some cases while looking for

Видавець Роман Малиновський запропонував цей проект, бо йому надзвичайно сподобався мій переклад «Володар Перстенів», і зокрема вдалі варіанти власних назв та імен фантазійного світу. Вихідна ідея була також перекладати прізвища героїв «Пастки-22», які здебільшого є значимими. Але згодом я таки наважилась їх транскрибувати, лише з кількома винятками, і однією з причин мого рішення було те, що майже всі прізвища в романі є реальними, не вигаданими автором. Видавець погодився, за що йому вельми вдячна. Яке Ваше ставлення до думки, що українським перекладачам варто перекладати наших авторів іноземними мовами, щоб стимулювати розповсюдження української літератури у світі? Вам доводилось перекладати англійською мовою художні твори? Це можливо, але радше як виняток, а не правило. In any case, critical thinking and curiosity are mandatory qualities of a good translator.

I have an interesting story in relation to ‘proper names’. The publisher Roman Malynovskyi offered me this project because he liked my translation of Lord of the Rings a lot, particularly how I translated the proper names of the fantasy world.

Initially, there was an idea to translate the character names of Catch-22 in the same way, because most of them are meaningful. However, I still dared to transcribe them, while leaving some of them out, and one of the reasons was that almost all the names in the novel are real ones, that is to say they were not invented by the author. The publisher supported me, and I am really grateful to him for that.

What do you think about the idea that Ukrainian translators should translate our authors’ books into other languages to raise the global profile of Ukrainian literature?

Have you ever translated fiction into English?

It is possible, but mostly as an exception, not a rule.

It is clear that a translator should speak, read, write and understand the language of the text as well as his or her native tongue, or almost as well and such translations should always be revised by a nativespeaking professional.

On the other hand, the literary reviser is not "almighty" in this regard: they can correct mistakes or improve the style of the text though they cannot give the text what a translator fails to include in it. Therefore, the best option is to work in pairs, where Ukrainian translators consult the native speakers when they lack the required knowledge of Ukrainian or of the cultural context of any given text.

I have been translating into English a lot, though it contradicts the conventional wisdom that one should only translate into one’s mother tongue. These are not fictional texts, and my translations are usually revised by native speakers. I have also some experience with some specific genres, e.g.

I translated Y. Horbachevskyi’s fairy tale and one of Y. Andrukhovych’s essays about

Окрім перекладу письмового, я маю чималий досвід усного перекладу включно з синхронним, а також багато років викладала англійську як іноземну, тому якщо вже беруся за якусь книжку, хочу, щоб вона мені припала до душі. Навіть маю трохи дивне відчуття, що твори самі мене обирають — немовби опиняюсь в потрібному місці в потрібний час — працюю з темами, які саме в цей час мене цікавлять, хвилюють, зачіпають, знаходжу в перекладних текстах відповіді на питання, якими в даний момент переймаюся, ну і звісно — бо як же інакше — впевнена, що маю достатньо знань і умінь для того, щоб зробити переклад на високому рівні. Що краще, отримувати оплату за переклад відразу або гонорар за кожний примірник, що продається? У наших умовах, з типовими тиражами в кілька тисяч примірників, я не бачу суттєвої різниці — в будь-якому разі на художніх перекладах розбагатіти важко, хоч я за те, щоб практика виплат роялті застосовувалась і для перекладачів, якщо це підходить видавництву і/ або перекладачу. Здається, з роялті перекладач ризикує, адже якщо книжка продаватиметься гірше за очікування, він не отримає сподіваного. Більшу проблему, однак, бачу в браку довіри до видавців, принаймні, в мене склалося таке враження від спілкування з колегами. — і для цього, на жаль, є підстави.

Have all your translations been ordered by publishers or do you also choose the books to translate yourself?

As a rule, I agree to some offers. I have recommended or found translators and revisers, and I have had some orders and payments for same, but I have never had a chance to make a proposal about translating a certain book. In recent years, I have often rejected the offers — the number of publishing houses has grown, and I have either had some project running, or my child is still too young, or the book is simply not interesting to me.

Apart from translation, I have a lot of interpreting experience, including conference interpreting, and I have also taught English as a second language, so if I agree to translate a book I make sure it is about something that I really like. I have an odd feeling that books in the right place at the right time, working on the themes , involved in them, which actually interest, thrill and excite me. I find in the translated texts the answers to the questions I am concerned with, and of course, I take the job if I feel that I have enough knowledge and skills to provide a high level translation of same.

Is it better to get an immediate payment for your translations or do you prefer to get the royalties for each sold copy of a book?

In our country, the situation when most of the publishers just issue several thousands of copies, there is no big difference.

In any case, it is hard to get rich translating fiction, though I would support the royalty system if it suits both a publisher and/or a translator. The translator might seem to risk his/her livelihood by having a royalty contract, since the book may not sell as well as expected, and he/she may not get the desired remuneration as a result.

However, I can see that a bigger issue is in the lack of trust in publishers, and in particular I have such a feeling myself judging from what colleagues have told me. Unfortunately, they have a point.

signing any written contract. It is even worse with royalties, which depend on the number of copies sold. Can a translator be sure of anything these days? What can he/she do if the customer does not act in good faith?

The fact that translators have recently begun to communicate more, and that they actually understand the need for professional associations and mutual support gives me hope that translators will learn to protect their rights better.

What are the conditions that a publisher can create for translators to enjoy working on artistic texts?

Найголовніше, щоб перекладач із видавцем мали одне за мету — створити дійсно якісний продукт, і поважали одне одного як фахівців, усе інше — похідне. Для мене особливо важливі дві речі: час і редактор. Час, відповідний до складності чи простоти тексту. Адже сумнівне достоїнство перекладача — вміти швидко зробити другосортний переклад, як і мало честі для видавництва, яке вирішує покарати перекладача за прострочену роботу, коли і без відрахувань обіцяна оплата смішна, а вимоги щодо строку — явно не до виконання.

The most important thing is for a translator and a publisher to have the same objective of creating a high quality product, to respect each other as professionals, and all the rest is secondary. For me, there are two things which are of the utmost importance: time invested and the work of revisers.

The time invested in the work should correlate with the complexity of the text, for it is not likely to be of any advantage for a translator to be able to provide a fast low quality translation, and it is not good for a publisher to punish a translator for the delayed work if the payment is ridiculously low and the deadlines are crazily inadequate.

А з редакторами у мене практично завжди складалася дуже успішна співпраця: була можливість обговорити і узгодити складні, проблемні місця, що однозначно йшло на користь виданню. Сподіваюсь, так буде і надалі.

However, my cooperation with revisers has usually been successful: I have always had a chance to discuss things and agree upon the issues, which is a great benefit for a book. I hope it will always be like that for me.

У конкурсній комісії МАНу, де Остав брав участь, був головний редактор журналу «Всесвіт». Він звернув увагу на вірш Толкіна, який Остап переклав з ельфійської мови квенья, і запитав, чи є в нього ще переклади для публікації. Переклад був, і в 2012 році з’явився перший надрукований переклад Остапа, а саме уривок із повісті Говарда Лавкрафта «Герберт Вест: реаніматор». Остапу тоді було 17 років. Переклавши інші оповідання Лавкрафта, він почав через кілька років писати видавництвам і пропонувати свої переклади. «Видавництво Жупанського», яке саме на той момент шукало перекладача для повного зібрання творів Лавкрафта, відгукнулося. A story of Ostap Ukrainets and his translations is inspiring. It is worth sharing it with all who like translating books, and dreams that once publishers will print what once was translated with no such ambition. Ostap’s research work helped him find his first publisher. When he was 17, he took part in a competition of research papers among school seniors, and one of the jury was the editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian journal of foreign literature Vsesvit, who was impressed by Ostap’s translation of one of Tolkien’s verses written in Quenya, the language of elves, and asked if Ostap had any translations ready for publication. Ostap had some, and in 2012 the first translation was published, in particular an extract from Hovard Lovecraft’s story Herbert WestReanimator. Several years later when he translated other Lovecraft’s stories he offered the translations to publishers. Zhupansky Publishing House which was looking for a translator for the complete collection of H. Lovecraft’s stories accepted his offer. Ostap translated this collection together with Kateryna Dudka, and they also translated the series of books called Warriors. To work together on a project of such a great scale one needs to have high respect for the colleague’s opinion, be able to accept being criticized, share love to the translated books and the Language itself. As a result, the author complicated style, his rich language means, and a gift to create parallel worlds that magnetize, terrify and drive people to insanity – all these were accurately rendered with by means of appropriate techniques, so while reading the Фото "Репортер".

Ви маєте свій стиль і у власних творах, і в перекладах. Ви напрацьовували стиль спеціально, чи він просто з’явився завдяки досвіду читання і вивчення літератури?

You have your own style as an author and as a translator. Have you worked on it, or it is a result of your reading experience and literature studies?

Я не уявляю собі іншого способу „напрацьовування” стилю, крім ото власне в процесі читання та вивчення літератури. Все, що ми знаємо і робимо — воно так чи інакше опирається на попередні знання і практику. Голе знання словесності не те що нічого не вартує без практики — воно без неї неможливе.

Я в житті не сказав би, що міфологія (та й будь-що інше) приваблює мене чимось. Це як сказати, що я вважаю дівчину привабливою суто через те, що мені подобається така форма носа чи колір очей. Чим Вас приваблює міфологія, антична й авторська? Власне, приваблює мене передовсім міфологія як явище, а окремі пласти у ній я виділяю хіба як побічний ефект. Як на те, германська міфологія мені подобається значно більше, ніж антична. Щодо авторської міфології — то тут навіть не знаю, що відповідати — мається на увазі індивідуальне міфотворення Толкінівського штибу чи міфологія повсякдення, інтерпретація дійсності, яка формує наше ставлення до цієї дійсності? Окрім того, я в житті не сказав би, що міфологія (та й будь-що інше) приваблює мене чимось. Ostap Ukrainets has his two own novels published, which are called Malkhut and Trance. He is doing the PhD research, taking active part in social and political life, and still translation is both his hobby and his job.

I cannot imagine any other way of “working on” my style except for reading and studying literature. All we know and do is based on some previously obtained knowledge and practice. A bare knowledge of language and literature is worth nothing without practice, and actually, it is just impossible without it.

I would never say that I am attracted to mythology (or anything else) for some specific reason. It is the same as saying that I consider a girl to be attractive because I like the shape of her nose or the colour of her eyes.

What is so attractive for you in mythology, both ancient mythology itself and that created by an author?

I am interested in mythology as a general phenomenon, while my singling out some individual layers within it is, say, a side effect of my interest.

To be exact, I like German mythology more than Ancient Greek or Roman ones. I am not sure what to say about a mythology that is created by one author. Do you mean individual Tolkien-like mythology creation or an every-day mythology, like any number of ways we can interpret life itself and be influenced by it? Besides, I would never say that I am attracted to mythology (or anything else) for some specific reason. It is the same as saying that I consider a girl to be attractive because I like the shape of her nose or the colour of her eyes.

To single out some parts is to reduce the value of the whole, which is worth doing only if you need to find at least something good about it. It is not

24 тільки тоді, коли потрібно знайти бодай щось хороше. Це не мій підхід. Мені подобається цілість, створена певною конфігурацією рис, які поодинці мене можуть не зацікавити, а в іншій конфігурації — не сподобатися. Ви працюєте над перекладами з Катериною Дудкою, як саме це відбувається? Розподіл роботи прагматичний, кожне з нас займається тим, що у конкретному випадку може зробити краще, ефективніше тощо. Відповідно кооперація — то саме пошук оптимальних рішень для складних ситуацій. А складною ситуацією я вважаю будь-яку, до вирішення якої слід докладати зусилля, навіть якщо це зусилля полягає в тому, що час від часу доводиться зазирати у пишний яр. Як Ви вивчаєте мови? Чи є певний підхід і методика, якими Ви би хотіли поділитися? Для загального рівня мені зазвичай вистачає DuoLingo і мінімальної практики з новинами. Це той рівень, у якому я розчаровуюсь, потрапляючи в мовне середовище, але з якого зручно стартувати далі. В усьому іншому — методики є, бажання ділитись немає, бо в кожного є свої питання, яким хочеться приділяти увагу, різним людям легше вивчаються різні аспекти і якщо комусь більше подобається зубрити правила і вокалбуляр — хто я такий, аби казати що так не можна?

my approach. I like the wholeness created by a combination of features which might not be interesting to me on their own, and I may even dislike them in some other form.

You work on translations together with Kateryna Dudka. How exactly do you work together?

The work is divided pragmatically, and both of us work on the parts we can do better, more efficiently, etc. in each case. Accordingly, the way we work is by searching for the most efficient solutions to complicated issues.

I consider any issue to be complicated if you need to make efforts to solve it, even if the efforts include simply looking up words in a dictionary.

How do you learn foreign languages? Do you have your own methods you would like to share?

If I just need to pick up the basics quickly, DuoLingo is enough for me, plus some minimal practice with things like the local news. Of course, it is a pathetic level of knowledge once you actually immerse yourself in a natural language environment, but it is OK to start with.

As regards the second part of your question,, I have my methods but I do not feel like sharing them.

The reason for this is because everyone has their own way of doing things. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. If people like learning words and grammar rules off by heart, who am I to tell them that they should not do it?

What is the difference between translating children’s and adult’s literature?

Переважно самою літературою. Не перекладач змінює стратегію залежно від літератури, а різні літератури вимагають різних стратегій.

The difference is in the literature itself. The devil is in the detail so to speak. It is not a translator that changes his/her strategy according to the literature, but various literatures require various strategies.

Перекладачі залежні від своїх текстів, вони не підлаштовують тексти під себе, тому в корені буде питання „Чим відрізняється література для дітей від інших текстів?” І тут відповіді немає. Іноді нічим. Іноді вокабуляром і стилістикою, але загалом — цільовою аудиторією. І це вже питання радше до видавця, ніж до перекладача.

Дослідник — то далека родина, він приїздить лише на великі свята, і тоді всі дивуються, як це він іще живий, але роблять вигляд, що раді його бачити. Навіть наливають. Як у Вас всередині живуть разом перекладач, письменник, дослідник і громадський діяч, вони не конфліктують? Конфліктують. Іноді громадський діяч починає спілкуватися з перекладачем і письменником, докоряти їм, що займають забагато його часу. Такі сварки взаємні. Дослідник — то далека родина, він приїздить лише на великі свята, і тоді всі дивуються, як це він іще живий, але роблять вигляд, що раді його бачити. Навіть наливають. Перекладача звати Арсен. Письменника звати Андрій. Дослідника звати Євпатій. Громадського діяча звати Богдан, але друзі називають його Зеником. Та й таке. Ви вважаєте, що художньому перекладу можна навчитися, чи до цього треба мати хист і вчитися немає сенсу? Думаю, не сильно помилюся, сказавши, що в більшості випадків хист переважно складається саме з того, чому людина навчилася. Саме навчилася, тобто зрозуміла, як це робити.

Translators depend on their texts, as they do not adjust texts to suit themselves, so the question here is “What is the difference between the literature for children and other types of texts?” Here there is no right or wrong answer. Sometimes there is no difference, but all in all, what is different is the target audience. So this question would be more suitable for a publisher than for a translator.

The researcher is not their next of kin, he only comes around for big family reunions, and everybody is surprised that he is still alive, but anyways they pretend to be happy to see him. They even treat him to a drink.

How do you handle being a translator, an author, a researcher and a public activist?

Don’t these four “quarrel” with one another?

They do. Sometimes the public activist within me starts talking to the translator and the author within me, blaming them for taking up too much of his time. Such claims are mutual in a sense. The researcher is not their next of kin, he only comes around for big family reunions, and everybody is surprised that he is still alive, but anyways they pretend to be happy to see him. They even treat him to a drink. The translator’s name is Arsen. The author’s name is Andriy. The researcher’s name is Yevpatiy. The public activist is Bohdan but his friends call him Zenyk. That’s it.

Do you think that one can be trained how to translate artistic texts, or should one have a gift for it and maybe there is no sense in thinking this skill can be learned?

Хороший письменник повинен бути хорошим читачем, хороший перекладач — хорошим носієм мови.

I don’t think it would be a mistake to say that the gift itself, so to speak, is usually formed from what a person has mastered. I mean really mastered, that is the person in question has painstakingly taught himself/herself how to do it.

A good author should be a good reader, and a good translator should be a good native speaker.

26 Тому „історія того-то” — це дуже корисна, хоч і неминуче нудна річ. Аби добре робити щось самому, слід знати, як це робили до тебе. Решта „хисту” — це, як на мене, питання мотивації.

Для того, щоб опанувати якийсь фах, необхідно підтримувати зворотній звязок із цим фахом. Тому „історія того-то” — це дуже корисна, хоч і неминуче нудна річ. Аби добре робити щось самому, слід знати, як це робили до тебе. А різні там „написані на роду” речі — то інші люди описують, яким саме вони хочуть когось бачити. Важливо заохочувати те, що виходить добре, звісно, але не обмежувати людину лише цим. Маю знайомих, котрі в своїй професії були просто віруозами, часто навіть до закінчення університету, але покликання знаходили в тому, що під тиском оточення раніше вважали простими гобі. Я не бачу жодних застережень від того, щоб людина зацмалась у вільний час бухгалтерією або маркетинговою аналітикою, а за основний фах мала той-таки переклад. To master some profession, you need to get feedback from this profession. Therefore, to know “somebody’s history” is very useful, though inevitably boring.

To do something well, you should know how other people did it before you. The rest of the “gift” is, in my opinion, a matter of personal motivation.

When people say that someone is “destined” to this or that, they do it to prove their point about this person. It is important to encourage what a person can do well but one must not limit him or her to this one stand-alone thing that somehow defines them.

Some of the people I know used to be hopeless in their chosen profession even before they had even graduated from university, but they often found their calling in something they considered to be just a hobby. I do not see why one should not do accounting or marketing analytics in there free time, and have translation as the main job. It can start with someone saying to themselves, “this really feels like my calling”, but it is then easy to feel that a “calling” is not exactly a mere “profession”.

Dear translation community!

I am happy to introduce my project Visa-Vie with Everyone: Translators’ Revelations.

It comprises the interviews with translators. I hope these interviews to be published as a book. Right now, waiting for the book to be released, I am offering Shadows’ readers the chance to get a sneak preview of the most interesting pages of this future best-seller (why not?)

I am sure Revelations will be fascinating both for expert and novice translators. Why am I so certain about it?

Firstly, Ukraine has not seen such a publication before.

However, you can find Lev Hrytsiuk’s interviews with translators online. I am grateful to Mr Hrutsiuk, a translator of Scandinavian languages from Lviv, for his support and brilliant advice.

Secondly, the way the project came into being makes me feel very optimistic about it. It was created with just one word!. This word was “Chapeau!” On the 10th October 2012, all those present at a concert at the Cultural Information Centre, which is run under the auspices and patronage of The Embassy of Ukraine in France, enjoyed singing and listening to Waltz of Kyiv, translated into French by Dmytro Chystiak.. The man is a brilliant and well-renowned translator.

The audience thanked the translator for his work by saying “Chapeau!”, which means “I admire your art!”. Mr Chystiak deserved such praise as he translated the lyrics written by Malyshko so perfectly that it all seemed just magical.

А мені тоді подумалось, що цей переклад надзвичайно вдало ілюструє максиму: «Перекласти можна все. Перекласти не можна нічого». Поглянувши на текст, у такому ракурсі, схотіла дізнатись, чому «моя стежина» перекладено саме «mon chemin». Адже французьке «un chemin»- це «дорога, путь». Аби ж передати «стежина», існує доволі великий синонімічний ряд. Тож чому «un chemin» стало еквівалентом «стежини»? Чи цей вибір зумовлено лише потребою зберегти ритмічний малюнок поезії? Чи, можливо, лексема, яку використано, несе в собі додаткові конотації, що наявні в оригіналі? Саме оця зацікавленість і стала поштовхом до розмови із паном Дмитром Чистяком, що була початком проекту. Правда, інтерв`ю перетворилося на відверті роздуми про життя в перекладі і переклад у житті. А потім, як мовиться, пішло-поїхало. І були щирі та емоційно наснажені слова Івана Рябчія, який переклав українською знаменитий «Цирк іде» Патріка Модіано. Була неквапна, осяяна мудрістю розмова із Сергієм Борщевським. А скільки несподіваних і цікавих відкриттів! Then I thought that it illustrated the expression “Everything can be translated and nothing can be translated”.

Studying the text, I noticed that of all synonyms for the word “path” in French, the word “chemin” was chosen. I asked myself, why this exact word was used, and not other synonyms. Was it simply because it fitted well in a rhythmic sense? Or, was it because it bears some connotations, that is to say some additional and culturally specific meanings, to be found in the source text as well?

This interest pushed me to ask Dmytryi Chystiak for an interview, which was the beginning of the project. Our talk was more like exchanging thoughts about life in translation and translation in life.

Then, things sort of moved on. . The next thing was an emotional conversation with Ivan Riabchiy, who translated Patric Modiano’s After the Circus into English. I also enjoyed a lengthy and wise talk with Serhiy Borshchevskyi.

There are so many interesting and unexpected things to discover in interviews like these! Why do some translators have to turn into … botanists?

What role did the womanf, or whom Regise Wagnier’s film East — West was her family story, play in our translation? Why are “cats” both useful and dangerous for translators? Why are translators afraid of royalty?

Будь ласка, дайте відповідь на запитання, яке хотіли поставити собі самі. Питання ось яке. Існують різні способи ворожіння — на картах, на кавовій гущі, на книжці (якщо розгорнути її в довільному місці або ж попередньо задумати номер сторінки і рядка)… Чи можливе ворожіння на перекладі? Моя відповідь — так. Розповім про єдиний випадок у моєму житті, коли це зі мною відбулося. Під час Євромайдану я не переклала жодного поетичного рядка — спинилася посеред однієї весняної ваґантської пісеньки з «Carmina Burana», де змішано латину і середньоверхньонімецьку мову, на строфі:

I will start our conversation in an unusual way.

What question you would like to ask yourself?

Here is the “question” that’s been on my mind. There are various ways of fortunetelling. Cards, coffee, books (if opened in a random place or when one thinks about the numbers of pages and verses)... Is it possible to tell fortune by a translation, and my answer is — yes.

Let me tell you about the single time it happened in my life. During Euromaidan I did not translate a single line of poetry. I stopped in the middle of some ancient song from Carmina Burana where Latin is mixed with Middle High German-and the following verse really struck a chord with me:

Ubi est antiquus meus amicus?

Hink equitavit, eia, quis me amabit?

Ubi est antiquus meus amicus?

І ще в майданівську зиму загадала: якщо вдасться закінчити цей переклад — Майдан переможе, а до того ж у моєму приватному житті все буде гаразд. Але вже відбулася кривава розв’язка, Україна оплакала і поховала героїв Небесної Сотні, й перемога Майдану здавалася очевидною (принаймні Янукович утік), а я й далі не могла перекласти більше ні слова. Та й хіба до перекладання тоді було? І коли почалася війна — завершення цього перекладу стало асоціюватись у мене з перемогою України у війні.

That particular winter, I told myself that if I manage to finish my translation, the revolution will succeed and, in addition, my personal life would be fine. However, even though it all ended in tears, and Ukraine was in mourning for the Heavenly Hundred, and the victory of the revolution seemed obvious (at least we can say that the then President Yanukovych fled as a result of it), I still couldn’t bring myself to translate a single word. Let’s not forget either that there were much more important things to worry about. When the war started, the end of this particular translation was associated with Ukraine winning the war.

І от у різдвяні дні 2015 року, коли ворог атакував нас із пекельною впертістю, і війні не видно було ні кінця ні краю (позаду був Іловайськ, попереду — Дебальцеве), переклад зненацька зрушив з місця і набрав остаточної форми:

І тоді ж таки друга, приватна, частина мого ворожіння почала справджуватися. Отже, неодмінно справдиться і перша — вірю в це вірою абсолютною і непохитною! До речі, у березні 2016-го я прочитала цей переклад (і переповіла пов’язану з ним історію) нашим військовим з 24-ї окремої механізованої Залізної бригади у Кримському на Луганщині, а також мешканцям села, які прийшли на наш концерт — концерт «Арт-десанту» під художнім командуванням київського режисера Сергія Архипчука. Кримське було найближчою до лінії розмежування точкою нашого маршруту (за 800 м від крайньої хати — сепари…). І наш концерт був тут першим масовим культурним заходом за всі два роки війни.

This is when the second, private part of my sacred text started to come true. So, I was sure the first part of it would also come true! By the way, in March 2016, I read the translated text to our military men from the 24th independent Mechanized brigade in Krymske, Luhansk Oblast.

Also in attendance were the villagers who came to our concert, which was called Art-Desant (“art landing force”) and it was held under the artistic leadership of Serhii Arkhypchuk. Krymske was the closest village to the front line (the separatists were a mere 800 meters away from the village). Our concert was the first massive cultural event during the first 2 years of the war.

By mystifying the reader in the foreword, Tolkien ascribed the majority of the poems of this cycle to hobbits. He makes Errantry a kind of hobbits’ literary entertainment: it is a poem or a story, the end of which goes back to its beginning. You can recite it as long as you want, until your listeners get bored. Thus, for instance, a knight having wandered, fought and practiced witchcraft, came back home and realized he had not accomplished his mission, the one that had been the very reason for him to travel in the first place!

Tolkien said, the poem itself, by the way, was invented by Bilbo who felt very proud of himself.

Probably, the author was no less proud as he repeated the same verse in The Lay of Eärendel, the longest of the verses found in his Lord of the Rings. Here is the fragment wherein the protagonist mastered magic and some magical crafts and is trying to win the “beauty-butterfly’s” heart:

What is the origin of your pseudonym?

Заховатися за псевдонімом мене змусив наклеп, який очорнював моє справжнє прізвище. З іншого боку, вимушене обрання псевдоніма дало мені змогу акцентувати свої ірландські уподобання — тут звучить відгомін імені ірландського і валлійського морського божества Лера–Ліра, майстра перевтілень, до речі — прообразу леґендарного короля Британії, який став прототипом шекспірівського короля Ліра. Та й загалом — алюзія до ліри, одвічного символу поезії.

A vicious slander that blackened my real family name made me hide behind my pseudonym. I won’t retell the general story in detail. On the other hand, the pseudonym was an opportunity to underline my admiration of Ireland. There is the mythological reverberation of the Irish and Welsh sea god Ler, Lir. He was, by the way, the mythological predecessor of a legendary British King who in turn became the prototype of Shakespeare’s King Leer.

Moreover, it is a symbol of the immortality of poetry itself.

WILLIAM TYNDALE: "A MAN'S CHARACTER IS HIS FATE" Andrew Purfield, Ireland Living in England of the 15th century and pursuing a goal of translating the Bible into English was a dangerous undertaking, which can be proven by William Tyndale’s life.

Throughout the blood-soaked pages of history, there have been many intellectuals persecuted for their beliefs, achievements, advancements and views. William Tyndale, born in 1494, was one such man. His life coincided with the turbulent and bloody period of the Protestant Reformation and his achievements were to follow him to the grave.

ORIGINS Born in 1494, he received a BA in Arts from the Magdalen Hall branch of Oxford University in 1512, aged just 18. Three years later, he graduated again from the same institution with a Master in Arts although he was famously only allowed to study Theology during this period, and forbidden from studying Scripture itself. The sacred teachings of Christianity were not for lowly peasants in medieval England.

As nevertheless he was academically recognised as a de facto member of the Clergy, he was soon to gain a reputation as a heretic, challenging the Pope and the teachings of the Catholic Church. His life coincided with the Protestant Reformation, which was to prove his life’s work, and was ultimately, to prove a quest which would claim his life.

THE ROAD TO PERDITION Early on in life, devoted to Scripture and railing against the prevailing religious conventions of the day, Tyndale embarked on the life of a heretic. He tried and failed to have the Bible translated into English in 1523, which by the standards of the day, was a dangerous attempt at securing his own place in Christian history. Historians, linguists and religious theorists could be forgiven for thinking he had a death wish. Latin was to remain the official language of the Catholic Church, and to translate the bible 500 years ago was heresy, against Canon Law, and courting death in more ways than one.

He traveled to what is now Germany in 1524, arriving and settling for a short while in Hamburg, before eventually arriving in Wittenberg, just 7 years after Martin Luther’s 95 theses in the same city had started the Protestant Reformation.

His crowning achievement during this period was the translation of the New Testament in Wittenberg in 1525. This text was then smuggled into Britain in 1529, prompting an almost biblical burning of English-language scripture as the Catholic Church openly denounced Tyndale as a dangerous and seditious religious Heretic in public for the first time.

Prior to Henry VIII’s founding of the Church of England, he required an annulment from the Catholic Church in order to separate from his first wife and marry the young Anne Boleyn.

The Practyse of Prelates, published in 1530 under Tyndale’s name, also made him an enemy of the King of England at a time when the Divine Right of Kings meant that their authority was absolute, final, handed down from God and unquestionable. Thereby, denouncing a wedding annulment request which he viewed as some Papal conspiracy to limit the English State’s authority, he also became a target for extradition on likely charges of heresy and high treason.

TRANSLATORIUM 2018: Перекладацький Translation фестиваль Festival в Україні in Ukraine Серед усіх подій, пов’язаних з перекладом, які проходять у всьому світі, TRANSLATORIUM виділяється своїм рок-н-рольним духом. Фестиваль є фестиваль. Як і обіцяла директорка фестивалю Тетяна Родіонова, цьогорічна програма здивувала не тільки літературними, але й перформативними і неформальними проектами. Фестивальність відчувалеся у всьому— енергійні талановиті творчі організатори, локації просто неба, неординарні гості і неформальне спілкування. Серед літературних перекладів, які обговорювалися на фестивалі були Курт Воннегут «Буфонада, або більше не самотні», про який розповіли перекладачка Тетяна Некряч і головний редактор видавництва «Вавилонська бібліотека» Роман Малиновський.

TRANSLATORIUM stands out from all the translation events that are held all over the world. Its rock-n-roll atmosphere just makes it different. It IS a festival. As Tetiana Radionova promised, this year’s programme was amazing, not only because of its literary projects, but also due to its performances and non-formal projects. The festival spirit could be felt in everything— from enthusiastic and talented, creative organization team, to open air locations, extraordinary guests and informal way of communicating with people.

Translators and interpreters are traditionally very fond of music— they play musical instruments, dance, sing, and of course listen to music. So musical gigs were a natural part of talks about translation.

Українсько-німецький поетичний гурт «Landschaft» за участі Григорія Семенчука та Ульріке Альмут-Зандіг презентував свої треки із нового альбому. Організатори змогли поєднати художній переклад і науку, усний переклад і письмовий, видавців і музикантів— і виявляється, таке поєднання є цілком гармонічним, коли для всіх спільною справою і пристрастю є переклад.

The music venue attracted passers-by who dropped in just to listen to music. The musicians eventually had a chance to talk on stage— they shared their philosophies their views on the links between words and sound in music. The Ukrainian-German poetic band Landschaft, featuring Georgii Semenchuk and Ulrike AlmutSandig, also presented the tracks from their new album.

The festival team managed to combine the spectacle of artistic translation and science, interpreting and translation, publishers and musicians— and such a mixture turned out to be absolutely perfect wherein translation was a shared interest and passion for everyone involved.

“Ukraїner” is the project that reveals the unfamiliar Ukraine by collecting information about unique places and extraordinary personalities that do their job heartily and with love.

The multimedia project includes various ways of giving information: texts, photos and different types of videos among which you can find a video story, short info videos, presentation videos from regions of Ukraine and videos—360.

Команда проекту «Ukraїner» — це понад 150 волонтерів з України та з інших країн, які знаходять, фіксують, розповідають, монтують та перекладають неймовірні локації та історії, аби поділитися ними зі світом. Ukraїner’s team consists of more than 150 volunteers from Ukraine and other countries who explore, record, retell, edit and translate unbelievable locations, stories in order to share them with the whole world. The project works on Ukraine’s international image, so all the information on the website (http://ukrainer.net) is translated and subtitled into six languages: English, Polish, German, Russian, Georgian, and Czech. Two more language versions are being prepared to be launched, the Greek and the French ones.

The inner system of terminology, stylistics and technical tips serves to organize the linguistic work and make the translators’ work in the project as efficient as possible.

Translators are divided into several chats and have special created documents in order to help each other in the project. The system of choosing the materials for translation is interesting as well.

Перекладаючи різними мовами історії «Ukraїner», команда щоразу стикається із викликами походження слова та сумними мовними стереотипами, які склалися до української мови за радянських часів. Ці застарілі кліше «Ukraїner» сміливо руйнує, наголошуючи, що є суттєва різниця, коли ми маємо переклад слова, який не співзвучний (як от Німеччина/ Deutschland/Germany), що склалося історично та етимологічно має сильне підґрунтя, а зовсім інше — споконвічне російсько-українське протистояння (ЧОрнобиль/ ЧЕрнобиль; KharkIv/KharkOv).

One of the most interesting working documents is the table of names and toponyms transliterated into all languages of the project. Translating Ukraїner’s stories into different languages the team faces the challenges caused by the word origin and frustrating language stereotypes that have firmly fixed in the language during the Soviet days. Ukraїner ruins these out-of-date clichés courageously. The team stresses upon the fact that the difference between the sound of the source name and its Ukrainian equivalent caused by historical and etymological reasons is natural (e.g. Німеччина/ Deutschland/Germany), unlike the differences caused by Russian—Ukrainian opposition (ЧОрнобиль/ЧЕрнобиль; KharkIv/ KharkOv).

Кожне рішення перекладацької команди формується в онлайн-чатах: загальному для усіх перекладачів чи для кожної окремої мови. Спілкування такого типу формує чітку мовну позицію проекту, що впливає також і на збір та фіксацію певних міжнародних норм чи навіть зародження словників, які, у зв’язку із певними історичними обставинами поки не представлені щодо української мови.

The translators team can solve disputable issues discussing them in online chats, both in the general one and that of each individual language of translation. This communication method helps form a clear cut language uttitude within the project, which also enhances collection and study of the international rules and regulations, and even the creation of dictionaries that have not been made yet, due to historical reasons.

Важливим елементом також є те, що кожен переклад вичитується за принципом чотирьох очей за міжнародними стандартами, а фінальні версії перекладів історій та субтитрів затверджують редактори-носії мови.

Another essential element is that each translated text is proofread by the four-eye principle according to the international standards, and final translations of stories and subtitles are edited and approved by native speakers.

When translating articles or videos, I get the joy of telling people from outside Ukraine about my country.”

As medical tourism is gaining more and more clients every year, the demand for medical translators and interpreters is growing. And the aim of such clients is to get their lives and health back on track.

Quite often they are driven by stereotypes and hopes that medical treatment or consultation abroad are better, cheaper, just different, and there's no guarantee at all that every one of those people who decide to go for a medical treatment abroad will speak the language the doctor does in any sort of fluent way, if at all. However, doctors and other healthcare professionals have a very important task to carry out, and they need to know that

At that very moment tricky experiences of an interpreter starts, in this sphere the human factor plays the major role and only a good combination of professionalism of both doctor and interpreter/ translator, modern approaches and methods of medicine and medical equipment as well as of joint human factor with a common goal make this experience successful. I would summarize the issues I faced and the ways I coped with in interpreting and translation for healthcare and medicine within 4 years of my work there. To overcome the challenges in medical translation you need to have experience in the medical field, they say. However, the medical field includes so many different branches using different terminology that even people with a vast medical professional experience struggle with it a lot.

The medical field is large, complex, and diverse, and medical translation and interpreting involve highlyspecialized and scientific language of quite sensitive nature (because it may affect human health and life).

This can include the names of diseases, treatments, and medications as well as the use of shorthand and specific medical jargon. So you just constantly

важливу роботу — мають бути впевненими, що будь-який діагноз, ліки чи консультації достеменно правильно надходять пацієнту чи іншому лікарю, щоб галузь охорони здоров’я приносила лише користь, а не загрозу, і супроводжувала пацієнта дорогою до одужання.

Лише вдала комбінація професіоналізму і лікаря, і перекладача, сучасні підходи та методи лікування, як і медичне устаткування разом з людським чинником і спільною метою забезпечать її успішне досягнення. Тому не дивно, що усний перекладач часто вступає в емоційний контакт з клієнтом — все заради його здоров’я та життя.

Однак медицина має так багато гілок, де використовується різноманітна термінологія, що, буває, навіть дуже досвідчені медичні фахівці довго мізкують над нею.

I made a term bank just for myself to optimize this process in general. Quite often medical translators are faced with the challenge of translating a word, a phrase,

Коли вас щиро цікавлять певні запитання і ви читаєте спеціалізовану літературу та журнали у вільний час, — це, на мою думку, вже певний успіх. Це дає змогу завжди бути обізнаним щодо назв нових розробок і трендових маніпуляцій у світі медицини та нових тенденцій. Наступним викликом є використання абревіатур та акронімів у галузі медицини. Вони по-різному подаються у різноманітних словниках та науковій літературі. Тож по-справжньому "весело" стає тоді, коли отримуєш письмову консультацію від лікаря. З цією проблемою я впоралася доволі просто, — телефонувала кожному лікарю, з висновком якого працювала, і всі складні слова, акроніми та абревіатури ставали зрозумілими. Для себе я створила термінологічний словник, щоб оптимізувати процес загалом. Часто трапляється таке, що медичні перекладачі стикаються з

Sometimes translating such a word or phrase would render the translated version meaningless so the temptation for the translator may be to leave it out altogether. Latin equivalents are quite helpful in this case, or just try to explain the meaning, do not search for a direct translation, leave nothing out!

Because of the different types of language and confidentiality that needs to be established at this stage, it's vital that the interpreter always knows what the probable line of communication is going to be.

This allows to appropriately tailor any and all communications to the right person at the other side, which includes being able to know how technical the target language should be, how much detail to put in and what kind of language should be used to discuss certain problems that could be occurring with someone's healthcare. Besides this eliminates emotional tension and creates trust between interpreter and patient, interpreter and doctor and between patient and doctor via the interpreter. Treat the situation so as you would like to be treated as a patient.

And one more very important issue: do not take the problems of the patients personally, do not try to search for the same symptoms or signs in your own body — this is not your business. Understanding and professionalism, as well as no additional emotions, are expected from the medical translation. the mental health of interpreter is vital to take care, so do not overplay with it. Just be ready to take a break and take care of your own mind.

The world of medical translation can be one of the hardest to deal with in the world, but when the right considerations are made and the right choices can be taken from the off, the chances of success increase greatly for everyone involved.

Інколи, переклад такого слова чи фрази, позбавляє сенсу весь переклад, тож тут є спокуса взагалі не перекладати такий темін. Зрештою, перекладачеві завжди важливо знати хід розмови для ситуації, у якій він працюватиме. Через різноманіття мови та певний потрібний рівень впевненості на цьому етапі, перекладач обов’язково має знати, про що приблизно йтиметься. Це даватиме змогу донести правильному адресату потрібну інформацію. Це охоплює розуміння того, наскільки технічною має бути мова перекладу, скільки деталей потрібно вказати, яку лексику варто застосовувати для обговорення певних проблем, що можуть иникнути у певної людини. Окрім цього, це усуне емоційне напруження та встановить довіру між перекладачем і пацієнтом, перекладачем і лікарем, лікарем і пацієнтом через перекладача. Проявляйте таке ставлення до ситуації, яке ви б хотіли отримати як пацієнт. Ще один дуже важливий пункт: не сприймайте проблеми пацієнтів особисто, не намагайтеся шукати схожі симптоми чи прояви у себе — це вас не стосується. If you are an expert of conference interpreting, the probability of taking advantage of such an opportunity increases considerably. Мені дуже подобається виїзний формат роботи — тренінги, інтенсиви, візити «у поля» (з соціологами), відвідини виробничих потужностей. Це чудова нагода побачити місця, міста та селища, до котрих за інших умов ти навряд чи потрапив би. Хоча чого ж він тривожній — скоріше, радісний. Це ж така втіха зі збираннями — тека з матеріалами, улюблена канцелярія та навушники, окрема історія з одягом (щоб був гарний, комфортний, не потребував надто ретельного прасування та щоб комбінувався всіляко та з усім). Це одна з неочевидних навичок, які дає перекладацький спосіб життя. Витривалість, гнучкість, комбінаторика! Літні люди кажуть «переїжджа сваха», а ми кажемо «їду синхронити на проект». Мені дуже подобається виїзний формат роботи — тренінги, інтенсиви, візити «у поля» (з соціологами), відвідини виробничих потужностей. Це чудова нагода побачити місця, міста та селища, до котрих за інших умов ти навряд чи потрапив би. A travelling interpreter is an expert at packing his/her bags. When updating my CV, I will obviously add “alert bags packing C2 ” to my personal strengths section.

I enjoy working on-site. Training, intensive courses, collaborative field visits et cetera, which offer the perfect opportunity to see new places, such as villages and settlements you would have never arrived at under normal circumstances.

Though it is joy rather than alert, as it brings me so much joy to carry around what I need — namely, a folder with my materials, my favourite stationery and head-phones. However, it is not so easy to manage one’s attire. In my experience, clothes should look good, fit well, be comfortable and not need to be ironed all the time.

This is one of the least evident personal skills that constitutes the interpreter's lifestyle. Stamina, flexibility, and combinatorial abilities are key! The elderly would call us an "itinerant",while we say, “I’m in for conference interpreting”.

I enjoy working on-site. For example, I have been to Chuhuiv, Kharkiv Oblast, Skhidnytsia, Lviv Oblast in Ukraine. In my work-related travels abroad, I have been to the outskirts of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, in India, and some nameless slums near Munich in Germany.

Коли їдеш передовсім працювати, себто не навантажуєш простір своїми уявленнями про те, як має скластися подорож — складається якраз чудово.

In my experience, such short trips from which you expect nothing of often turn out to be the most strange and wonderful travels imaginable. John Lennon said life is everything that happen to you while you are making other plans. If you travel in order to work in the first place, and you don’t overburden yourself with expectations, everything usually turns out just right.

А от парасольку, незважаючи на традиційні рекомендації, можна і не возити скрізь за собою: в готелі, якщо знадобиться, дадуть скористатися їхньою, а ви зекономите місце у валізі. Звісно, відвідувати інші країни як турист і по роботі — це зовсім різні речі, й інколи дуже прикро, коли не виходить побачити на власні очі якусь місцеву принаду через щільний розклад зустрічей та перекладів.

Навчена досвідом попередніх поїздок, прошу за можливості селити перекладачів у той самий готель, де відбуватимуться робочі заходи, аби ранкові та вечірні трансфери не з’їдали час підготовки та відпочинку. В такому випадку гарна ідея — залишитись у місті ще на день, аби це виправити. Проживання практично завжди буде за свій рахунок, а от питання з квитками на літак або потяг можна вирішити по-різному. Частіше за все організатори йдуть назустріч перекладачеві та погоджуються купити квиток на день пізніше — їм, як правило, все одно, яка саме дата, аби не вийти за рамки бюджету на проживання та харчування. Так я чинила у Відні, у Стокгольмі, у Нью-Йорку, тому що було фізично боляче їхати звідти, не побачивши нічого, окрім аеропорту та готелю. Під час конференцій зазвичай включають до «позакласної» програми відвідування основних історичних та культурних пам’яток, проте чи брати в них участь, якщо занадто втомився, а попереду ще день чи два синхрону — вирішувати вам. Ніхто краще за вас не знає меж вашої витривалості, і тут не може бути одного правильного рішення — кожного разу ситуація окрема та унікальна (як, втім, завжди).

Having learnt from my travel experiences, I request to make accomodation for interpreters at the hotel where all their work-related events will be held (to avoid wasting any time).

The following has been checked: portable power banks and universal adapters for all types of sockets are more essential in my line of work than trivial items such as spare clothes, shampoo, shoes et cetera. An umbrella, in turn, despite all recommendations isn’t needed whatsoever. If you need one, you may pick it up at the hotel and you will avoid having to carry one through airports.

Of course, visiting other countries as a tourist or for business are entirely different things. It’s such a pity when you cannot go sightseeing because of a busy agenda of meetings and interpreting. In this case, it would be a good idea to stay a day longer for personal reasons.

Having learnt from my travel experiences, I prefer to send translators to the hotel closest to where all their work-related events will be held (this is done in order to avoid wasting any time).

If you decide to do so, only travel expenses will be covered. Frequently, the local facilitators help a translator to buy a ticket so that he/she can stay on a bit longer. They do not seem to care about the date. The main thing for them is to stay within the budget they have to spend on food, accommodation et cetera. This is how I acted in places like Vienna, Stockholm, New-York, because it would be painful to leave not having actually seen anybody out in the real world or anything except the inside of airports and hotels.

During the conferences, you are usually provided with outdoor programmes so that you could visit the main historical and cultural sights. However, it is always up to you whether you want to take part in these events-for example, if you are pretty tired and you have a few days of simultaneous translation ahead of you, you may not feel up to it. Nobody else knows your stamina , so the best is to decide yourself how to plan your free time in a new place. As every time the situation is different and unique, you need to keep the relevant people informed.

58 Your professional life is amazing! You travel, write, translate, make speeches at conferences. Could you give up any of the things you do?

Thank you so much! I try to evolve and challenge myself all the time, so at different times one aspect of it all might get center stage — like travel, at certain times of the year, or just sitting at home and working like crazy at others — but I enjoy the diversity and versatility more than anything, so I wouldn’t give up any of it. And what’s best about freelancing is that I get to travel, explore, have fun and work all at the same time. I’m still not fully a digital nomad, but I’m getting there.

It’s true that nowadays I pick my conferences more carefully, and put more emphasis on traveling and writing and trying to get out there, but I still love the opportunities that this diversity affords me… cause the sky is the limit.

In the literary sphere, I got to translate a most challenging novel, Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. That was truly one of the most demanding projects I’ve ever done, as the main protagonist of the book was actually the language itself, and etymology.

What is your most interesting translation project? Can you tell about it?

I’ve had quite a few, because I work a lot and I’m considered very prolific. In the literary sphere, I got to translate a most challenging novel, Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. That was truly one of the most demanding projects I’ve ever done, as the main protagonist of the book was actually the language itself, and etymology.

Another big challenge was translating a travel guide from a language that isn’t my strongest one (Italian), but pressing circumstances required me to step up to the plate. Since I translate Lonely Planet travel guides for almost twenty years now, I’m very well versed in the lingo and style, so with my knowledge of Italy, as well as a little help from my friends (and the Italian I learned for five years at the university level), I managed to do a good job.

60 Wander Words: how did it appear and evolved?

I started writing a blog when I went to Vermont in 2010, and quickly discovered that people like my writing. That blog was also what led me to write for travel magazines, but it was chaotic and amateurish, I thought. I decided to go about it in a more professional manner and hired a designer for my logo and website. The first part is all ready and I love it, the website is still very much work in progress, as I keep evolving and my goals and vision keep changing. But I’m getting there, and the result will be a blog/website in English that is all about writing, translating and photographing the world.

Most years I traveled just twice or three times a year, but for an extended period of three or more weeks, especially if I went to the USA. My longest run was in Vermont (and New England as a whole), where I spent four months in total.

However in 2016, for example, I’ve been invited to many conferences (and my brother lived in Southern France back then) so I had two or three months of constant travel — from France to Prague, then Ukraine, straight to Portugal, and also Stockholm…

It was a big year for travel.

Last year was calmer, but I did get to visit two new places that were always on my bucket list. I went to beautiful Iceland with a friend, and I couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit Cambodia, to write about a 5-star river cruise on the Mekong and visit Angkor Wat… that was an awesome experience.

This year I’m also traveling a lot, I started with a FAM trip to Antalia, then went to Athens for Elia Together, and since July I’ve been to Rome, on another info tour to Chalkidiki in Greece, and now I’m in Dnipro again. Next is Berlin, cause funnily enough, I’ve never been there.

Hmm, not really. It depends on the trip. If it’s an info tour, it’s usually very structured. If I’m in America, I like to plan the route in general terms, but I also like to just go on a road trip and wing it, explore those small towns that no one goes to. When I’m visiting a new city, on the other hand, I like to first explore the neighborhood around my hotel or Airbnb, find the closest supermarket and coffee place or local bar.

Then I usually take in the must-sees, and later I just go wandering about in search of hidden places, street art, specialty shops and the likes.

What attracts you in conferences?

My first international translation conference was the FIT Congress in Vancouver, 2001, if I remember correctly. I was still a beginner, but I had a good subject for a presentation, so I ventured far and had a wonderful time, and I’ve been going to conferences — as an attendee or a speaker — ever since.

I the last couple of years, I’ve been doing that less and less, as I have put my focus on travel writing, but I will still pick and choose one or two a year, if the program sounds exciting and fresh — which I’m afraid doesn’t happen that often anymore — and even more than that, if the hosting city is one that I

Ever since that first visit to Dnipro and UTICamp, I’ve been back a few times, both as a guest of Menorah Center in Dnipro and later on an info tour in Kiev and Lviv, as well as on private trips — to visit friends and enjoy the good vibe, great food and wonderful shopping here in Dnipro. Like every other country, including my own, Ukraine has its’ share of problems, and needs to invest more in infrastructure, travel services (the total lack of English, for example, is quite a problem), but it is also a huge and diverse country of great potential, both touristic and otherwise, and I hope that in a small way I’m helping to get the word out there.

Що вам найбільше подобається на конференціях? Першою міжнародною перекладацькою конференцією став конгрес FIT у Ванкувері 2001 року, якщо я не помиляюсь. Я тільки починала свою діяльність, але мала дуже цікаву тему для виступу, тому поїхала й чудово провела час, відтоді я постійно беру участь у конференціях. Впродовж останніх двох років я їжджу на конференції дедалі менше, оскільки більше пишу про свої подорожі. Та все ж обираю одну-дві на рік, якщо програма захоплива та свіжа, що, на жаль, трапляється щоразу рідше, та радше якщо хочу відвідати місто, у якому відбуватиметься подія. Саме так я і потрапила до UTICamp, оскільки раніше ніколи не була в Україні. Та й ідея влаштувати конференцію посеред лісу здавалася захопливою та свіжою. І справді, ця конференція виявилася однією з найкращих, які я відвідала.

Ми познайомилися на перекладацькій конференції «UTICamp» в Україні. Я знаю, що Ви знову приїжджали до нас. Що можете розповісти нашим читачам про країну? Я люблю Україну! Після першого візиту до Дніпра та конференції «UTICamp», я кілька разів поверталась, обидва рази рази на запрошення культурного центру «Менора» у Дніпрі. Пізніше їздила на інфотури до Києва та Львова, і просто, щоб провідати друзів і насолодитися прекрасною атмосферою, чудовою їжею та шопінгом у Дніпрі. Як будьяка інша країна світу, і моя також, Україна має свої проблеми. Уряд має більше інвестувати в інфраструктуру, туристичні послуги (повна відсутність англійської мови, наприклад, є важливою проблемою), проте це й величезна та різноманітна країна з високим потенціалом, і туристичним, і не тільки. Я надіюсь, що хоча б трішки, та все ж допомагаю популяризувати цю країну. Інтерв'ю брала Н. Павлюк
