As they planted, Tata and the children discussed their favorite ways to eat dalo. “ I like the leaves cooked with coconut milk,” Adria said. “ My favorite is the roots, cooked and served in slices,” said Jim. “ Any way that Nana cooks dalo is fine with me,” said Tata. “And you all know about dalo…”

“Don’t eat it raw,” said all the children together.

(Dalo can make you sick if you eat it without cooking it first, but everyone in Fiji knows that.)

They went on planting all through the field, under the trees. Suddenly Jim pointed up and started to laugh. Everyone looked around and began laughing too. Adria had decided to look for food in the treetops instead of planting it in the ground. There were lots of papaya trees on the farm, and she had found a ripe papaya to bring down. The question was whether she was going to get the ripe papaya without pulling down any of the green ones on her head.
