The Oregon Police Department consists of 19 sworn officers including a Chief, two Lieutenants, Detective Sergeant, three Patrol Sergeants, Detective, a K-9 Unit, School Resource Officer, Patrol Officers, three civilian employees, and 12 part-time crossing guards. The Oregon Police Department is one of only 36 agencies accredited out of 529 agencies in the state and one of only 4 in Dane County. The police department serves a population of approximately 11,000 and handles approximately 10,000 calls for service each year. The mission of the Oregon Police Department is to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse community to improve their quality of life. Safety Day, Safety Camp, and National Night Out are a few of our community events where you can meet our officers throughout the year.

The Oregon Area Fire/EMS District remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering quality, timely, and professional emergency services to those who live in and travel through the communities we serve. Our essential duties extend beyond traditional fire and rescue services; we are actively engaged in vehicle extrication, technical rescue, fire prevention and education, CPR/AED training, Stop the Bleed training, fire investigation, and emergency management of natural disasters. Serving the Village of Oregon, Townships of Dunn, Oregon, and Rutland, as well as the surrounding communities, OAFED now protects approximately 18,000 residents across 44 square miles from our station.
Our staffing has grown to be robust, consisting of dedicated members who respond to over 1,800 calls for service annually. This team includes full-time staff, part-time, and interns, all united in their dedication, service, and integrity toward this community. Our district, celebrating over 130 years of service, continues to work diligently to achieve the highest levels of preparedness and prevention in both Fire and EMS services.

Keller Alpine Meadows Park Walking Path
A 2-mile walking/biking path that runs adjacent to Alpine Parkway, with a parking area located on Netherwood Street.
Oregon Rotary Bike Trail
The Oregon Rotary Bike Trail begins at the corner of Netherwood St and Cusick Pkwy and runs all the way to Fish Hatchery Rd. Park at either end. Enjoy miles of scenic views along the trail. It is a favorite spot among local bikers, runners and walkers.
Badger State Trail
The Badger State Trail is a 40 mile path that runs from Madison to the Illinois border, going through Oregon along the way. The closest trailhead can be found near the intersection of Purcell Rd and Borchert Rd. The Badger State Trail connects to the following trails: Capital City, Military Ridge, and Sugar River.

North Main Street Historic Homes
To celebrate the Village of Oregon’s Sesquicentennial in 1991, the Oregon Area Historical Society conducted a Historical House Walk. From the many historic homes on North Main Street, these five houses were featured in the walk that took place on May 18, 1991.
248 North Main - The oldest house on the walking tour is a Queen Anne style house, which was built in 1897 for Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Marvin. He was the eldest son of local hardware merchant H.H. Marvin and grandson of Oregon pioneer A. B. Marvin. The Marvins lived here until 1901, then traded it to M.R. Terwilliger. He rented the house to Franklin Gould, who added a summer kitchen to the rear of the house in 1902.
357 North Main - Retired farmer John Gilbert built this house for himself and his wife, Flora in 1906. As construction on his new house was beginning, word spread that the Gilbert’s house was to be something special. By January 1907, the house was finished and the Oregon Observer noted that “It is a beautiful home and has all the modern improvements. It is the most expensive dwelling in town.”
405 North Main - Warren B. Chandler built this house for his wife and son on the corner of North Main and West Lincoln Streets in 1905. Chandler moved to Oregon in 1873 and was very active in the sale of livestock. He became one of the most prominent livestock dealers in Dane County. Chandler retired from the livestock business in 1912 and became the village assessor for the next 25 years.
561 North Main - This house on the corner of North Main and Franklin Streets was built for local real estate dealer, Andrew S. Parsons Construction was completed in March 1907. The house became a nursing home in 1948. In 1954, it was purchased by the Catholic Church and used as a convent until 1968. The Mahrs purchased it in 1970 using it both as a home and for a time, as a veterinary office.
610 North Main - Architectural fashion underwent a transition in the early 20th century from the elaborate Queen Anne style to a simpler, more natural look. The Prairie and Craftsman style houses which emerged emphasized the use of natural materials and simplicity of appearance and function. This house was built in 1912 for DeWitt Clinton Salisbury and his wife, Orelia They moved from their old home next door, which was built in 1867 on a farm that his family first settled in 1846. Salisbury worked as a farmer for most of his life. He was educated at the University in Madison and served in the Civil War. He was a lifelong diarist of life in the 19th century, writing remarkable accounts of life in 19th century Wisconsin.

South Main Street Historic Neighborhood
The land in this area was originally part of Sylvester Pratt’s 200-acre farm. He came to Oregon in 1844. When the railroad came to Oregon in 1864, Pratt sold land to the railroad. He also sold land to the east of the railroad to William Bedford. The early settlers that built homes in this area were prominent merchants and civic leaders in Oregon. These are just a few of those early residents who lived in this neighborhood.
146 South Main - Norton and Ruth T. Ames - Norton, a veteran of WWI serving in the Marine Aviation unit, was a director of the Bank of Oregon, served on the Village Board and was named Honorary Chief of the Fire Department. Ruth was chairperson of the local Red Cross chapter and served 32 years on the Oregon School Board for which they declared her “Oregon’s First Lady of Education” upon her retirement.
159 South Main - W. L. Ames was a farmer and a trustee on the Village Board, serving as Village President from 1927-1930. He was an avid historian, mainly responsible for compiling a valuable history of Oregon in 1924.
171 South Main - Charles Wackman operated a clothing store under the name of Powers & Wackman. His wife, Mary, was an acclaimed published poet. Their daughter, Charline, played on the professional stage and taught dramatics.
225 South Main - Plympton Hayes was the first owner of 225 S. Main St. He was the son of Ira Hayes, one of the first settlers in Oregon. Plympton managed the Oregon Hotel, also called the Depot or Railroad Hotel on Market and West Lincoln Streets.
241 South Main - Elias Jacobus was one of the first owners of the land at 241 South Main. He served in the Civil War with the Pioneer Corps. He was a carpenter.
The archival files of the Oregon Area Historical Society provided these short synopses of the homes of some of the earliest residents of the Village of Oregon; each of whom contributed to the development of the community through business or civic involvement.
