The Oregon Police Department consists of 19 sworn officers including a Chief, two Lieutenants, Detective Sergeant, three Patrol Sergeants, Detective, a K-9 Unit, School Resource Officer, Patrol Officers, three civilian employees, and 12 part-time crossing guards. The Oregon Police Department is one of only 36 agencies accredited out of 529 agencies in the state and one of only 4 in Dane County. The police department serves a population of approximately 11,000 and handles approximately 10,000 calls for service each year. The mission of the Oregon Police Department is to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse community to improve their quality of life. The Oregon Area Fire/EMS District remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering quality, timely, and professional emergency services to those who live in and travel through the communities we serve. Our essential duties extend beyond traditional fire and rescue services; we are actively engaged in vehicle extrication, technical rescue, fire prevention and education, CPR/AED training, Stop the Bleed training, fire investigation, and emergency management of natural disasters. Serving the Village of Oregon, Townships of Dunn, Oregon, and Rutland, as well as the surrounding communities, OAFED now protects approximately 18,000 residents across 44 square miles from our station.
Our staffing has grown to be robust, consisting of dedicated members who respond to over 1,800 calls for service annually. This team includes full-time staff, part-time, and interns, all united in their dedication, service, and integrity toward this community. Our district, celebrating over 130 years of service, continues to work diligently to achieve the highest levels of preparedness and prevention in both Fire and EMS services.

Keller Alpine Meadows Park Walking Path
A 2-mile walking/biking path that runs adjacent to Alpine Parkway, with a parking area located on Netherwood Street.
Oregon Rotary Bike Trail
The Oregon Rotary Bike Trail begins at the corner of Netherwood Rd and Cusick Pkwy and runs all the way to Fish Hatchery Rd Park at either end. Enjoy miles of scenic views along the trail. It is a favorite spot among local bikers, runners and walkers.
Badger State Trail
The Badger State Trail is a 40 mile path that runs from Madison to the Illinois border, going through Oregon along the way. The closest trailhead can be found near the intersection of Purcell Rd and Borchert Rd The Badger State Trail connects to the following trails: Capital City, Military Ridge, and Sugar River.
State Trail Pass Requirements
Purchase a required trail pass before using a state trail at any DNR service center, on the phone or at a self service station at a trailhead. Anderson Farm County Park - 914 Union Road
Dog Park - 804 Union Road
Entrance located on Union Road. Includes woodland, prairie and agricultural land, picnic areas, and a hiking trail and dog park.
Anderson Park Friends is a dynamic, accomplished conservation group focusing on forests, prairies, a dog park, a food pantry garden, and the overall development of Anderson Farm County Park. The group is well-known for its annual Candlelight Walk and Bonfire. It served over 1,000 people in 2023.
Elving Kjellstrom Memorial Park

Includes a 25-square-foot pavilion area with benches, and a memorial plaque honoring Elving Kjellstrom, the founder of Wisco Industries in Oregon. A sidewalk connects to Market Street and the Village’s bike path and Braun Rd.
Highlands of Netherwood Park

Located on Peterson Trail/South Netherwood Road, this park includes a paved path, playing field, park shelter with restrooms and accessible playground equipment.
Jaycee Community Park

Located east of N. Oak Street. Includes Pickleball courts, a paved path, wooden bridges, ball diamonds, playing fields, a park shelter, playground equipment, concession stand, restrooms, and prairie.

A 9.2-acre dog park with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. Annual or daily passes are available at the Oregon Village Hall.
Keller Alpine Meadows Park

A 108.73-acre park located between County Highway CC and Netherwood Road. Includes a paved pathway, bridge, benches, picnic tables, bike fixing station, a parking lot, informational board, wetlands and wildlife habitat areas.
Kiser Fireman’s Park

Located on the corner of N. Oak Street and Brook Street. Includes a skate park, tennis courts, playing fields, softball diamonds, picnic shelter, picnic tables, paved path and restrooms. Site of the Annual Oregon Summer Fest!
Lerner Conservation Park

A 65.38-acre grassy area located adjacent to Keller Alpine Meadows Park. Includes trails, an outdoor classroom, information kiosk, and wooden bridge. Often used by local schools for projects.

The Streets Of Oregon
HISTORY
Early streets in Oregon were merely dirt roads - muddy when it rained or snowed and dusty when it was dry. Horse and buggy was the primary mode of transportation. In 1905, the village purchased a quarry and stone crusher to keep streets in good condition. Rock was extracted from the quarry just outside the village. By 1910, automobiles came into general use. Soon after, a problem of rock particles being picked up on the rubber tires evolved. They went back to road grading and ground gravel (instead of raw gravel).
In 1923, the first concrete street was laid on Copenhagen Street (now Jefferson Street) by Elmer and Adelbert “Deb” Peterson and Chris and Jack Johnson. They laid 50 feet a day using a hand mixer. All hand labor – no machines. In 1926 concrete streets ran the entire length of North and South Main Streets.

In 1873, named streets were: N Main; S Main; Janesville St; West St; Spring St; and Market St. On the north side: First St, Second St, Third St., and Fourth St. On the south side: South First St; South Second; and South Third St.
• Numbered streets on the west side of N Main were renamed for U.S. Presidents:
• Second, Third and Fourth became Johnson, Lincoln, and Monroe.
• N First Street renamed W Grove St to match (East) Grove St directly across N Main.
• On Oregon’s south side,
• South First became Elm Street, South Second became Washington St and South Third St became State St.
• Jefferson St had several previous names: Paoli Road; West Street, and Copenhagen Street
(Note: Research has failed to determine the year the streets were renamed. However, a reference to “new street markers” in the Oregon Centennial booklet (1841-1941) might indicate that it was around 1940-1941.)
Names of early settlers, Abraham Kierstead, William Soden, and Charles Waterman have streets which bear their names.
Streets are commemorated for American Revolutionary War veteran, Nathaniel Ames, and Charles Netherwood, a Civil War Veteran. Charles Waterman purchased two hundred acres of land in 1849 and donated land for the Presbyterian Church on N Main Street and for the downtown Waterman Park, which was dedicated to Justin Waterman’s wife, Annie Ozburn Waterman.
Most every town has a Main Street that represents the central business district in the town. While Oregon’s Main Street could aptly apply here as well; there is the added co-incidence that it also may be in honor of an early settler and Justice of the Peace, Robert Palmer Main; or even his son, Edwin Dakin Main who served as Village President from 1901-1903.
Wolfe Street is named for the first president of the village, Manuel Wolfe who served terms from 18831884 and 1889-1890. Although not officially designated as such, Wolfe Street/Hwy MM south toward the Village of Brooklyn, was locally referred to as the “Hogback,” presumably for the topographical lay of the land.
Madsen Circle and Madsen Road are named for F.E. Madsen who established a rural development on West Netherwood Rd. He was the longest serving village president; 1937-1973; who also established local business establishments and was a partner in the Waterfall Restaurant and Motel.
Developers have typically had the privilege of naming the streets in their development with approval from the Village. In many instances, streets were named for people who previously owned land in that area or were well-known citizens of Oregon:
• Robinson Road; Ellen Court, Thomson Lane – Ellen Peterson Robinson, granddaughter of early settler, George Thomson.
• Cell Court: Atty. Chuck Cell
• Scott Street, Miller Drive – Scott and Selma Miller, previous owners of the farmstead where these streets are located
• North and South Perry Parkway - Perry Netherwood, well-known for delivery of milk in early years
• Nygaard Street - Norman Nygard owned property on Lincoln Street
• Gail Court, Dale Drive, Jill Court – children of Ivan and Jo Gregory – who established the Stable Supper Club in Oregon
• Thompson Drive – Harold and Pat Thompson, parents of Mary Jo Lease, developer of Merri-Hill Addition
• East Richards Road – Either Roy Richards – Village President 1913-1915 or Owen E. Richards, Bank of Oregon President
• Walter St, Peterson Trail, Nels Circle, Langland St, Denmark St, Bettebo, Lindelse - Walter Peterson farm on Hwy CC
• Blended Names:
• Veldor Street - Velma Waefler and Dorothy Gasner - Waefler and Gasner real estate developers
• Cledell Street – A blend of Cletus and Adella Brown – Cletus Brown local barber and farmer in Oregon
• Hayler Court – Hugh Hayes, attorney and Earl Wheeler, banker
