ADVANCING TALENT, OPPORTUNITY and PROSPERITY: The Madison Region’s Economic Development, Diversity and Leadership Summit
FRIDAY

2014
CONVENTION
MAY 09

CENTER
M A D I S O N WI
Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us at the Madison Region’s Economic Development, Diversity and Leadership Summit. The simple act of participating today demonstrates your commitment to advancing talent, opportunity and prosperity for all the region’s citizens. For that we are grateful. As the Madison Region Economic Partnership (MadREP) and Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) planned this event, we often encountered curiosity — and sometimes even surprise — about how this partnership came to be. It’s a question we never tire of answering. Simply put, we recognize that authentic collaboration is integral to tackling both the challenges and opportunities facing our region. We’ve all read the headlines and seen the data about the issues ahead — from economic competitiveness, to racial disparity, to the skills gap, and more. The voices on these issues are many, yet we know that they’re not always participating in the same conversation. That’s what today is about. We have endeavored to gather individuals from the public and private sectors, from our urban and rural communities, from a broad range of ages, ethnicities and viewpoints…all with the intention of convening a diversity of voices around shared issues and interests to find common ground and develop solutions. Long before the idea for this joint Summit was born, MadREP and ULGM recognized the interconnectivity of both organizations’ strategies and missions. MadREP is spearheading implementation of the region’s five-year Advance Now Strategy for economic growth, while ULGM is pursuing efforts designed to transform our communities into the Best in the Midwest for everyone. Both of these platforms target economic, workforce, and community development — three initiatives that are inherently intertwined and demand collaboration. When you embed a focus on diversity and inclusion into these efforts, they ignite with real potential for business and economic growth. So here we are. Today is equal parts celebration, deliberation, and experimentation. But in any case, we know that this Summit marks an important milestone in our collective efforts to work toward more positive outcomes for all the region’s residents. We are glad you’re here with us. Your voice in this discussion is important, so don’t be afraid to use it. And please accept our gratitude for the role you play in helping the Madison Region advance. Sincerely,
Paul Jadin, President, Madison Region Economic Partnership
Gary Wolter Board Chair, Madison Region Economic Partnership Chairman, President and CEO, Madison Gas & Electric
Noble Wray Interim President and CEO, Urban League of Greater Madison
Wade Harrison Board Chair, Urban League of Greater Madison Attorney, Godfrey and Khan, S.C.

ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS: Mirror mirror on the wall… | Hall J When we look in the economic development mirror what do we see? Are we an attractive place to locate a company? Or expand? Or start one? Just as important is what others see. How do those outside the region view us? How can local businesses help our region be seen in the best light? Janet Ady, one of the best in the business when it comes to seeing the Madison Region through the eyes of businesses looking for a home, will share her expert opinion. Featured Presenter: Janet Ady, President & CEO, Ady Voltege HUMAN CAPITAL: Seed + Venture + Political < Human Capital. A healthy, educated, well-trained, and motivated team (and region) trumps everything. So what innovative advancements are happening at our schools, on our campuses, and in our classrooms to jumpstart our investment in people? Come learn about what educators are doing now to prepare tomorrow’s workforce, and the role that MadREP and ULGM play in connecting the region’s students and schools with the jobs of today and tomorrow. Our panelists represent a range of positions on the business life cycle, from a small start-up to one that is more than 100 years old. Business leaders give first-person accounts of the paths to success, the hurdles they’ve overcome, the changes they’ve implemented, and the capital and technical assistance that’s available. Plus, learn more about MadREP’s initiatives to help innovators and entrepreneurs access space, capital, connections, and mentorship. So why does it feel like our business has changed overnight? Leaders from area businesses/organizations discuss the strategic changes they’ve made to embrace and engage workplace diversity. We’ll explore efforts that are best implemented at the individual workplace level, and those that can be scaled to a broader community level, particularly through the leadership and diversity initiatives of ULGM and MadREP.
