Program Notes Composed in 2014, We Can't Breathe was inspired by the protests against violence by U.S. police forces. In late 2014 there were multiple protests against the police killings of three African-American males, Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri), Tamir Rice (Cleveland, Ohio) and Eric Garner (Staten Island, New York). On December 3, 2014 the Staten Island grand jury decided not to indict police office Daniel Pantaleo. This decision sparked peaceful and violent protests across the country. When Eric Garner was choked to death in Staten Island, New York for selling loose cigarettes his final words were “I can't breathe.” Mr. Garner screamed these words eleven times in a row. The choke hold caused him to go into cardiac arrest and then die. The words “I can't breathe” and “we can't breathe” became the slogan of the protests against police brutality. The final eleven measures of this piece are the same words, “I can't breathe,” that Mr. Garner tried to say.

I found this event and especially the protests very moving. Unsure of what to do with my feelings towards the events, I chose to write music. This piece is my small contribution to the movement and dedicated to those who have been unfairly treated by police.

In addition to the percussion instruments, the piece includes a vocal element. As indicated in the score, the text should be yelled in the rhythm notated.

The text is taken from chants used in anti-racism protests.

Each part should have a high and a low tom drum. Various size drums can be used but it is suggested to use lower pitched toms.

The legato marking is to indicate a heavier note. This is not an accent, but it is

Corpus

is a vibrant composer who calls Chicago home. He began his formal musical training at 12, but he’s been developing a love and appreciation for music all his life.

Tim earned his bachelor of music degree in percussion performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, where he studied with composer Stacy Garrop and timpanist Ed Harrison of Chicago’s Lyric Opera. Tim earned a master of music degree in music composition at The Hartt School at the University of Hartford. During his time at The Hartt School, he studied with world-renowned composers such as David Macbride, Larry Alan Smith, Robert Carl and Stephen Gryc.

As a percussionist and timpanist, Tim has performed with ensembles throughout the United States including the Chicago Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Lakeshore Symphony, and the American Opera Group. He has also conducted groups from Roosevelt University and the American Chamber Opera.

Along with talent scholarships from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and The Hartt School, he has received other awards including the ASCAP Plus Award and a research grant in 2011 toward his work on Filipino composer Lucio D. San Pedro. In 2013, Tim was awarded an endorsement from the Vic Firth Education Team for his work as a percussion teacher.

Not only does Tim love writing and playing music, but he also enjoys sharing his passion with aspiring musicians and composers. Since 2005 Tim has been teaching music to a wide range of students (age 4 to adult). In addition to demonstrating master classes in percussion, orchestration and drum set, he has taught percussion at high schools and music curricula as Adjunct Faculty for Chicago City Colleges. He also taught at Capital Preparatory Magnet School in West Hartford, Connecticut, which is ranked as one of the best schools in America. Currently, Tim is Drumline Instructor at Loyola University Chicago.

His music has been performed on three continents and performed bya variety of ensembles including works for the Palomar Ensemble, Roosevelt University, Loyola University, Vagus Trio, Vox Novus and the Yorkville Fine Arts Festival. Highlights include “Breath, revisited” for Third Coast Percussion at the Kennedy Center and Museum of Modern art in New York City.

Tim is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the Percussive Arts Society and his works are published by Attacca Publishing.
