Program Notes The New American Timpani project was supported by 3Arts Chicago and Roosevelt University. This project funded the composing, recording and performance of three new works for timpani. The new works include a book of timpani solos, percussion quartet with timpani and timpani concerto.
The last composition in the New American Timpani Project was Concerto for Timpani. While composing the concerto I decided to stick closely to a rondo form. Throughout the piece, each member of the ensemble shares a moment with the timpani. Some of these moments are a dialog and some are more united. As the piece continues, the ensemble and soloist grow further apart musically. In the 3rd section (starting at J) the ensemble and soloist act independently of each other, in their own specific tempi. After the cadenza the ensemble and soloist are reunited. I chose to work with only five timpani to demonstrate the capabilities of the performer. From rehearsal Q, the soloist is playing independent of the ensemble. However, the timpanist should be done with their measure 170 before the ensemble reaches rehearsal S. Additionally, I removed many extended techniques in order to focus on strong fundamental skills such as precision and intonation.
