We are excited to exhibit a rich range of contemporary art – from the painterly organic to precisely expressive to reductively abstracted works. The art has been created in distinctive media including hand pressed monotype, oil, gouache, porcelain, and found wood. ALICE CARPENTER

Alice Carpenter’s inventive monotypes have a richly executed pictorial strength that transcends their small stature. Her unique handling of the monotype medium invites the viewer into realms that evoke memories and dreams. She has achieved national recognition for her work in this medium.

As Joel Oliphint stated in Columbus Alive (July, 2021) “Carpenter uses both additive and reductive methods to make the images, manipulating the ink while also employing a palette knife on the plates and a utility knife on the paper to etch the outlines of buildings, trees and country lanes. Sometimes Carpenter uses gouache to to lend a lunar glow to the landscape.”

ALAN GOUGH Alan Gough’s underlying pictorial structure has affinity with Stephen Pentak‘s abstract works despite the fact that Alan’s landscapes are very precise in their delineation of a specific locale, time and season of the year. The artist admires the meticulous draftsmanship, yet spare austere compositions of such masters as Albrecht Durer, Caspar Friedrich and Andrew Wyeth. His use of subtle hues of ochre, umber, copper, celery, and dusty blue lend an undercurrent of enduring life and peaceful lyricism to many of his paintings, especially those depicting the various stages of winter.

PAU L H A M I LTO N Paul Hamilton graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design, with particularly fine instruction by Nathaniel Larrabee, and has exhibited in prominent galleries in New York, Maine, Vermont, Martha’s Vineyard, Montana and throughout the Midwest for decades.

Paul is able to capture the light, temperature, wind and cadence of the land and flora he paints with fine draftsmanship, command of composition, and deft brushwork.

His deep sensitivity to nature in all its guises lends a unique tranquility to his art.

TAMARA JAEGER "The materials are found wood and wood I have painted myself. The assemblages are meant to suggest. I am more interested in a hint at something than in its precise representation. I use posture, gesture, pattern, and color to convey a feeling and create singular personalities. I enjoy placing people in the contest of an environment: in a restaurant, in a crowd, at a concert, playing a guitar or holding an umbrella. I try to create a beautiful space with a feeling of stillness."

The joyful aura of child’s play bubbling across the exhibition is the visible half of another contradiction. Buried deeply below the wooden surfaces is a full-tilt, flat-out investment of energy both physical and cerebral, rained and intuitive, in finding, arranging, manipulating, adding, subtracting, pondering, critiquing and reassembling an infinite variety of choices until they acquire the just-exactly-rightness the artist had in mind. Hard work hides in this play. Tamara Jaeger’s art exults in the balance.

STEPHEN PENTAK Stephen Pentak in recent years has worked more abstractly with “blocks” of multi-hued planes of color in a diptych or triptych configuration to create an aesthetic aura. These works have affinities with the paintings of Brice Marden and Gerhard Richter that transcend overt description to evoke a more universal vision.

Many paintings are symbolic of the light and atmosphere of diverse locales - from the cool seas off Maine to the warm, russet terrain of New Mexico. You can create your own interpretation of each illusive work.

He very recently completed a special suite of more painterly abstracted works that have a lyrical tiinge and amazing luminosity.

WILLARD READER Will Reader has been recognized for decades in southern Ohio for his exquisitely rendered and quietly evocative portrayals of the regional landscape and Portsmouth urbanscape. His works are realistically painted yet reductively composed. Will’s work has been recognized by the Southern Ohio Museum, which has had four exhibitions of his work, including one in 2004 in conjunction with Alan Gough. His work has also been included in two significant exhibitions in 2014 and 2015 at the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery, entitled The Urban Landscape: A Tale of Grandeur and

Abandonment and A Century of Ohio Watercolor, which traveled to the Southern Ohio Museum, as well.

His art was recently featured in the celebration of the Southern Ohio Museum’s permanent collection and new exhibition galleries. ​

ELSIE SANCHEZ Elsie’s recent drawings have slightly more lyrical animation than her work in past years. There is still a strong pictorial structure and surface density in her drawings that have been a hallmark of her art for years. One can visually move in and out of the pictorial space that is created by her layers of brushwork and subtle nuances of color and tone. The balance that Elsie maintains between a visceral organic human presence and a “woven” order is extraordinary. Her paintings and drawings are as much about ever-changing life as they are about the nuances of her media.

CAROL SNYDER Carol’s lyrical, meticulous art in the exacting medium of porcelain is nationally recognized. Her work has been included in national juried ceramic exhibitions and she continues to show in the demanding juried expositions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Contemporary Craft Show and the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, D.C. Her work is included in permanent museum collections nationally and in private collections internationally.

Carol examines and explores her chosen medium to full-effect, highlighting the simple forms, warm translucency and graceful lines that porcelain affords. . . Her most recent work sees her continue to explore the expressive potential of porcelain.

This includes the addition of more colors through porcelain slip, and a variety of textural approaches. All this serves to further expand the narrative possibilities of her work.

CONNIE TERRY Connie Terry received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Ohio State University. She has dedicated the past several years since she retired from teaching art for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department for thirty one years to an in-depth study of the history of the monotype and numerous monotype techniques.

She has created a fine significant body of oil paint and water-based printing ink monotypes. Often her subjects are landscapes or have an element of the landscape or water in them, sometimes with figures or forms. The locales of her work include Ohio, Colorado and Maine.

Her expressive painterly landscapes such as View off Old Fall River Road,R.M.N.P. are often vibrantly hued with a rich application of her media and a fine utilization of the bare paper to illuminate her forms in radiant reflected light. The wide range of her media and the deft handling of it instill a dynamic quality to her art.

DAVID TERRY Dave Terry’s deft ink monotypes have a fluidity of expression and calligraphic energy that is often associated with this medium. The essence of a monotype, traditionally, is its spontaneous rende­ring of forms and atmospheric qualities as evident in the works of such American masters as Frank Duveneck, William Merritt Chase, J. Francis Murphy, and Maurice Prendergast.

Dave’s ability to capture the atmospheric qualities of such phenomena as wind, snow, sleet and sunshine is exceptional. He marks the surface of the glass in creative ways where he is “painting” with ink to capture the fluctuating effects of light play­ ing on wild grass or reflecting off a frigid, icy pond. His animated “mark making” adds an abstract quality to his work that transcends description. He also creates evocative, inventive monotypes that are hand printed from his expressive reverse oil paintings on glass.

MARY JANE WARD There is a delicate lyricism and tactile physicality that permeates the still life drawings of Mary Jane Ward which are complemented by her extraordinary draftsmanship. These works have affinities with the refined yet expressive Hudson River School drawings of Asher B. Durand and John Frederick Kensett. The delicate, Ruskinian floral watercolors of Fidelia Bridges are kindred with Mary Jane’s drawings as well.

As Bob Bahr stated in Plein Air Magazine (Febru­ary-March 2022, pg.53) “Equipped with some of the best education possible in today’s art world, Ward seeks to learn more about the natural world and how to depict it in a truthful and personal way.

This aspect of her personality is best seen in her drawings and paintings of intimate subjects. Skill and sensitivity are needed so the subject is not only presented honestly, but also says something about the artist’s perception and artistic vision.”
